Take the rack back off check to see if the problem still exists. If so check the condition of your tires...front and back. Cupped and/or wornout tires tend to produce tank slapping at deceleration. Now if your problem occurs at acceleration as well I would blame the rack or bad installation. Go get you some Krausers or a Bushtec trailer and forget about this rack. Re: ECU Failure (was Atlanta)
Steve, you are welcome to come up to my place but my weekends are next to impossible 'till August 27, since I will be out of town for the most part of August. I still think you ought to call me some evening this week, we may be able to isolate the problem over the phone. Your condition very much sounds like you may be activating via faulty electronics and/or other intermittent failure your GTS's rev limiter. So, make sure it's not a wiring harness/connector that's causing the break down and further look into the rev limiter's operation in the manual (and corresponding ECU failure codes). Secondly, measure at the TPS the voltages at different RPMs (digital voltmeter and a needle at the top of the connector does the job), it's a very straight forward thing to record voltage values @ different RPMs for comparison. BTW have you set the ECU pots to the 1:00 o' clock position? This would be a good starting point for your measurements if we were to compare readings. Thirdly, remove the IPS sensor from the air box make sure it works properly. If this thing is an airflow sensor and I've never done this so I am just guessing, you can create a stationary test set by using a fan, hair dryer or what ever else to try and simulate as close to real life conditions as possible. I assume you can at least measure the IPS's changing resistance and voltage output, (it's nothing more than a transducer, may even be replaceable with a variable resistor for testing purposes after you've established max/min values). BTW you could also connect your volt meter leads semi-permanently to the IPS and ride the GTS like that 'till you isolate the failure condition. Also, check both sensor connectors/wires for burned marks or broken wire strands within their insulation, your failure may be related to heat causing an imperfect component to fail. I would not recommend you replacing the ECU or the sensors yet since the failure may not be passive thus inducing the same failure to the new parts due to high voltage, reverse polarity, etc. You may even want to go looking into the ECU since it can very well be a partially seated component on the PC board (the intermittence of your condition points to such failure). Has anyone out there opened the ECU box for more precise guidance for doing this? One last thing and I know this sounds simplistic but for the record check your battery for soundability and for tight connections, including your voltage regulator to make sure it's not overjuicing the system. Not much else I can think off right now. Re: GTS vs K1200RS
I rode them both, the K1200RS I would say is lighter, much smoother delivery has a top speed edge due to its higher HP output but torque is a toss up. I'd take the GTS when it comes to handling and comfortand prise. IN MOTO (an Italian magazine) had figures of 11.4 (400 meters) and 152 mph for the K12 and 11.8 and 141 for the GTS. In the real world though the difference is probably hardly noticeable. Does anyone know if the K1200 is faster than a GTS ?? I know they claim a top end of 152 on the K bike, but the quarter mile times were the same as a GTS , in the 11.70'S . K-1200'S have a six speed , so top end is not a fair comparison. I have pushed my GTS to about 140 down Big Bend Texas way with the bags back at the campground. I think it would have gone a bit faster, but I did not want to push my luck on a then new bike. Anyone have any top end figures?? Several K bike types had inquiring minds and wanted to know. Re: Helmets are for Intelligent Riders
The government does good things and bad things. Requiring that everyone have special insurance for any activity that they do, makes no sense. It makes a lot of sense if you are an insurance company and you have the lobbying power to get politicians to see things your way! They very much know that riders are no greater a risk so they will be glad to have us legislatively be forced to pay insurance premiums. It all makes a great deal of economic sensefor them. Also, found out today that Blue Cross Blue Shield is THE ONLY insurance company in my area that "IS ALLOWED BY LAW" to cover our company's and other companies I suspect medical needs. Re: copyright/here George goes again
Timothy, having done copyright work in the past, and as explained to me by a lawyer, the copying of copyrighted material is not illegal as long as it is not done for profit. For example if I make my own riding video and as background music I use a song from a CD I have purchased I am cool as long as this video is used for non-profit, and can show it or give it to friends with no legal ramifications. I believe intent to profit is the key here. George Lookass :-) - Original Message - From: Argo, Timothy D. [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Multiple recipients of list [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, June 09, 2000 11:25 AM Subject: RE: copyright/here George goes again Sorry, I have to chime in. Seems to be some confusion between Patents and copyright. Patents are in existence to encourage public disclosure of new technology. The Government will give you a period of exclusivity (20 years) in exchange for public disclosure of how exactly the technology works. If Coke was patented instead of a trade secret the patent would have expired long ago and anyone could make a drink with the exact recipe. Copyrights on the other hand last a very long time (life of the author + 50 years, or if for works made for hire, 50 years from first publication or 100 years from creation, whichever is shorter) It is given to the author of any original work or expression. Further you can register your copyright which give you the ability to recover monetary damages. A copyright exists immediately upon production of any original work. Without registering it you can not recover monetary damages but you can have a court order anyone infringing your copyright to stop. Now the concept of fair use come in, if I buy a copyrighted product but want to make a copy for myself to safeguard the original, that is within my rights. If I wish to give a select few pages to another person, That is also within my rights so long as the portion I am distributing is a small subset of the original work. The concept is to protect the work from someone else copying or commercially using it. _ NetZero - Defenders of the Free World Click here for FREE Internet Access and Email http://www.netzero.net/download/index.html

Re: Easiest Way To Change Air Filters
Mike, The only way that I know off to safely replace air filters is to take both side of the engine plastic off, including top and bottom. It sounds like a big task but after you've done it once you'll be able to do it blind folded in 5 minutes. Just be careful to remove all the screws so as not to crack or break the plastic. There's a gas vent hose on "gray glove compartment" you have to disconnect in order to remove it, it will become obvious once you do it. After you've removed the plastic body parts you will see the top of the airbox (black square looking thing). It is held down with 10-12 Philips head screws. Remove those, pull the top off and you will see the two filters which you will change out. I've replaced mine with individual KNs, they work great and there's no need for that huge air box occupying all that space. While there, change your spark plugs, they should be replaced once a year for good measure, even though mine looked brand spanking new after a year's use. The whole task should not take more then one hour. Hope this helps you George the wrench - Original Message - From: Mike [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Multiple recipients of list [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, May 27, 2000 7:38 PM Subject: Easiest Way To Change Air Filters GTS Brothers: What's the easiest way to get to and replace the air filters? Falling in love.....
.all over again, and no this is no fluff about my personal life so, here's the story. Last weekend I had the pleasure of taking a 2 day ride down to LA (Lower Alabama :-)) for a beemer gathering. My neighbor just bought a BMW 1200 RS, their flagship when it comes to sport riding/speed. I must say that after playing with it a while I was very impressed with its smoothens of ride. Numb nuts me finally felt like a smooth operator, the best part of the experience. Also, the gear box was precise and the power delivery very smooth and deliberate, but there still seemed to be a slight surge due to the EFI, I guess that's the nature of this hea beast. The 130 ponies didn't hurt me none either so, 135 came and went a few times bringing all sorts of emotions to my lonely heart. All in all it was a great experience for about an hour, the RS was a great bike but I was glad to get my GTS back. Ah here you is my trusty baby. I think I'll keep ya a while longer since you fit so well and I can still do things with you I can do with no other. Now how can I tickle your gear box, give you a few extra ponies, eliminate your vibes for my anatomy's sake and stop that back talking surge of yours. I know I can make you the best that's ever been if only I try hard enough. Yea I know it's my fault! Re: Yamaha my Bike
Maxine, I've been doing some testing of my own on this surging problem and I also have experienced the higher RPM surging with a 94 ECU in place of my original 93 so, changing an ECU is not a cure all, as a matter of fact I think my original ECU was better behaved. How much surging are you getting with your bike (if you can at all quantify it) and have you tried adjusting for minimizing this abnormality? Maybe your 10% reduction is due to Yamaha's adjustment. Re: About the MCN letter ABS
Yamaha lawyer: "Uh, no. We'll repair the ABS units voluntarily." NHTSA lawyer: "Thank you, have a nice day." Would you like a cappuccino while we are working on your brakes Yamaha asks. If this is not simplistic I don't know what is. No conditions, no compromises, no give and take right? Even if they do repair once what happens the next time? What will the next person we sell our GTS to do? Or are we all going to agree to retire our GTSs for trying to save lives. Yea that's it. If someone wants a lawyer, just lock up a brake and crash. Then you'll easily find one who wants to sue Yamaha Big Time. By pursuing this the way we're doing it, we may save Yamaha millions and maybe someone's life. I don't think asking them to fix my brakes is such a selfish idea here. -Jay Yea right, I am sure we are doing this to save Yamaha $ and other's lives!! I am sure we would be mobilizing if the part cost $20 instead of $2,000. I was once stopped by a cop and given a ticket for not wearing my seat beltI have an inherent antipathy to such measures but that's another story. Re: bulb comparison/FYI
I have been using OEM but a step up from stock (85/120W) on both my bikes. Much more light output in front of the handle bars and bulb only costs $13. Now will the higher wattage damage the sockets? Only time will tell but my mind tells me NOT, especially if high beam low beam is alternated frequently during long trips. George says let there be light PS. Merry Christmass to all my fellow listers, including the ones I don't like, it's up to you to figure out who you are :-) Alan Tooraen wrote: Dave, this is my response to the test. From day one I have told people that I only sell Piaa bulbs because a lot of people ask for them . I have never sold the 85 watt variant that was tested in this test, but I can say that bikes equipped with the Piaa bulbs can be seen much better in the daylight because of the temperature of the light ( Piaa=3800 degrees kelvin vs 3200 degrees kelvin for standard bulbs). Since Stanley bulbs were not tested , and several of them do not have any coating or tint at all , I still firmly stand behind my assertion that they are superior to stock bulbs in every way except life expectancy. I think after reading this report I will stop selling Piaa bulbs . I currently use Stanley's in all my bikes and vehicles. Re: ABS issue - George says...
..I am sorry for not participating in this ABS issue but believe me I have been very-very-very busy, hell I haven't even been ridding and that's a life requirement!! Before I go on I must say that due to good friends and fortune, Yamaha has been very good to both my RS and GTS. But since I am a member of this list you can add me to the ABS failures, lets say by proxy, since my hydraulic unit was also replaced but under warranty and prior to my purchasing the bike. Don't know if my thoughts will be useful but if I was the Cahoona of this list I would approach the ABS problem in the following manner. 1) I would make us an official club with bi-laws, elected officers and the like. Why? This will give us credence as a united and formidable group. It will also give Yamaha a focussed reference point to respond to. 2) I would write another letter (Yami did leave the door open in their response to us and BTW Hawk-man I believe you are reading what you expected and not what Yamaha really said since their answer was diplomatic as it should have been), short, concise and to the point. I.e. "what we request is not unreasonable so please help us out or else we have been authorized by our club members to go public and legally proceed if that becomes necessary. We sincerely hope it does not". The finer details of what constitutes failure, risk, normal tear and wear are for the shysters to figure out and no pun intended here for the latest version of the letter, it was well written but was also wordy. And when I say go public I mean cycle mags, mobilization of media outlets i.e radio, TV coverage in front of Yamaha dealers and picketing, not only NHTSA MCN . I know that's a bit much but if we are not so much committed to the cause why should Yami step up to the plate? Also, report our problem to the BBB of each and every city we live in, create so much bad press that it would be counter productive for them not to settle, and that's the bottom line. 3) I would collect signatures and a monitory commitment from all that are willing to participate in legal proceedings if that becomes necessary. It's either step to the plate or go away folks! 4) I would not reveal my cards to Yamaha via rambling ons on this list since it can easily be monitored by Big Brother (I know for a fact our Royal Star list is thoroughly sanitized by Yami doods) which means Yamaha already knows our quandary, confusion and future moves. That's why we must elect a prez and a VP to represent our club and leave it up to them to do the job. Any input that may be required by members can be had via private e-mails, if there is such thing, or phone calls. 5) I know it's a good chunk of money to have to spend on a new HU but after all the laws of physics are the laws of physics, even for almighty Yamaha. Therefore lets be reasonable, don't expect Yamaha to keep paying for ever 100% of all out of warranty failures. There's consumer protection laws out there that make provisions for arbitration (input needed here from our friendly GTS attorney members), but we first have to determine what's fair for both parties. It's 6:30 am, the java has run out and so have my opinions. It's back to laying hard wood floors for me and a back breaking job it is. Let me see can I ask God to replace my 44 year old lower back free of charge? Will he even bother sending me a rejection letter? Who can I get to arbitrate my cause, my namesake maybe? Warning on AMSOIL filters
As you all know I am a happy user of Amsoil products and a rep. I've used their filters on both my Volvo and Audi but never on my motorcycles. All I can say about their auto filters is that they do not have the exact size replacements which makes them harder to put on and off plus on my Volvo, the filter deteriorated prematurely since it did not hold pressure overnight. How do I know? The oil light would stay on more time than normal plus when I removed it on the last oil change there was no liquid in it. Could it be a aberration? Possibly but I've never had this aberration happen with OEM products. Can Amsoil be cutting corners to increase profit? I sincerely hope not because I would hate to have to second guess their oil quality. George Prometheus has provided all he knows on this subject "Henry S. Winokur" wrote: As for the oil filter, you can use the SDF-13, SDF-20 and SDF-36. The SDF-13 is an exact replacement. If anyone has experience enlighten us. Since one the ABS fails there is no way to cycle the fluid - the longer it sits after failure the worse it'll be to fix cause corrosion will continue. I once drug a SOHC 750 four honda out of gross disuse resurrected it. The engine was fine but there was corrosion in the front caliper. The pistons (steel) could be cleaned brought back but the aluminum calipers were pitted. I honed then got it all to work but the pistons were sloppier than I liked. (I was still young enough to be immortal). For anyone who's done one - was there any pitting in the HCU? Which brings up one more point. Anyone who's HCU has failed probably ought to take a look at the caliper bores also. From personal experience, when brakes fail, they fail ON - think brake pad smoke - but if you can clean off the pistons prevent further damage it's time well spent. Re: Supertrapp Exhaust
Thomas, don't know about the Supertrapp exhaust specifically but the oxygen sensor re-installation has been done before and is a simple procedure. Drill and tap or weld onto the new hardware making sure you remount the oxygen sensor in the same proximity as the original location. As for performance, the jury's out on this one. With that I mean there's more to performance than sheer speed i.e. the larger headers seem to make the bike less jerky but you get a flat spot at about 4K rpm. Stan has a point though about the VH, it looks cool but not much of a performer. Thought about getting a R1100RT, but test drive turned out to be just as boring as the Kaw. Thought about getting a R1100RS, and it was a lot of fun, but it's $10,000. What I really like is what I already have...a '93 GTS. Just need to add the hard bags and I'll be set.
