[h-cost] overdying and yellowing silk
In prepping for another project I was rummaging through the stash and came across a length of chocolate brown cotton velveteen. It's a lovely color, but not one that I would not wear. Every time I have put brown on I take one look at myself and change to something else, so I don't want to make something special and never wear it. I tried bleaching it, hoping to take the color down to a rust that I would wear, but it didn't change. I've tried over dying with red and gotten a slight hint of red to the color but not a significant amount. I've thought of trying a blue to see if it would go burgundy or such. Any suggestions? Another find is a white silk skirt, one of those thin floating things that is about to be re-purposed to a veil and partlet. the silk has yellowed significantly, and I prefer this yellowing as white against the face isn't a good thing for me either. I am concerned that this coloring may not be permanent. While I don't anticipate washing the partlet often considering the metal thread embroidery I'm about to apply, I'm concerned that the veil will need to be washed because someone spilled something on it (Don't asked about the gown that beer was spilt on and a through laundering made the skirt shrink - not the bodice, just the skirt grrh!) and now the coloring is different between this set... thanks alex -- So much to do and so little attention span to get it done with… ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

I've tried over dying with red and gotten a slight hint of red to the color but not a significant amount. I've thought of trying a blue to see if it would go burgundy or such. Any suggestions? Dye remover usually donesn't work very well on industrial dyes. Red or blue would probably end up showing through, but you'll get a muddy colour. If I were you, I'd try overdyeing on a swatch - that way, you can really saturate it with dye and see how the colours work. Also, keep in mind that the pile represents a great amount of fiber to be dyed; it's going to take at least twice the amount of dye than you'd normally use for regular fabric the same size. that is about to be re-purposed to a veil and partlet. the silk has yellowed significantly, and I prefer this yellowing as white against Usually silk yellowing is pretty permanent. If you're going to cut it, then you can get a swatch and try washing it. ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume

If I had one, It would have the 1540-ish green Florentine gown that I'm able to remake this weekend. I'd put the gown together several years ago, but the sleeves are wrong- they need slashing, I'm going to take off the shoulders and maybe re-pleat the skirt. Other than lacking several details that this gown needs to BE 1540-sih Florentine, it was a good fit, nice fabric, comfortable to wear, but has so far only made it out of the house once or twice. That's why I need a new partlet and veil too. That's my holiday weekend project! alex who even found the perfect pair of shoes to go with the gown as well as the right beads to make the gridle as well... I had to giggle at this one!! Verity is wearing my ca. 1510 Venetian gown, with an overly-large camicia borrowed from someone else. It's not a pretty sight. Verity has been re-calibrated to fit my current [overweight] size and the gown no longer meets at the waist. Pout. But, that's why she's named Verity--she doesn't lie to me. So the next step is to give that gown away and make a new one from some maroon velveteen in the stash... oh, and a new camicia, too, since I lost mine at Lilies War [long story] and the one I've borrowed is uncomfortably big. My cutting table, on the other hand, is wearing yards and yards of lightweight linen to be made into a couple of Elizabethan smocks using Margo's Historic Patterns. Re: [h-cost] What's your dressmaker's dummy wearing today?
Thanks for the suggestion. 3 issues. 1, I don't have an Ikea nearby, and am not fond of what they have online. 2, I have the fabric already to match my home decor, and the other curtains that are already up. 3. The kitchen drapes need to be padded to keep out the cold (all windows right behind my usual seat). So, I just need to do them. Re: [h-cost] 30s flight attendant uniforms
I just found NASM. *** Yes! Here's a color photo of a replica of the uniforms I showed you in the pics from United Air Lines. http://www.nasm.si.edu/exhibitions/gal102/americabyair/abaImage.cfm?webID=210.p10 MMa lovely green...NOT! Anyway, it's very deco. I hate that manikin too. A big round metal head? The uniform looks rumpled and ill fitted. They look much better on the girls! http://www.nasm.si.edu/exhibitions/gal102/americabyair/abaImage.cfm?webID=210.p6 Here are the 1st two I posted earlier, again: http://www.united.com/page/article/0,,3217,00.html http://www.united.com/page/article/0,,3218,00.html ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
Re: [h-cost] 30s flight attendant uniforms ....a site for you
I'm not sure who posted first, but I just noticed the thread. The Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum has had an exhibit for about two years now that covers (in part) the beginnings of the commercial air industry in the US (America by Air). I'm not sure how close up the photos get, and I don't have the time right now to get dragged into it (I'm *really* bad about getting sucked into websurfing when I start with si.edu pages), but here's one of the pages with air attendant uniforms pictured - and links to other sections of the exhibit (as well as to the rest of the museum). http://www.nasm.si.edu/exhibitions/gal102/americabyair/innovation/innovation13.cfm -Liz ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
[h-cost] Happy Birthday to me!
My Darling has said he'd buy me a dress form for my birthday. Any recommendations on which brand to buy? Which to avoid? Thanks! Re: [h-cost] What is my dummy wearing today?
My dummy is wearing a Victorian corset, 1890's shirtwaist, 1893 petticoat. 1/2 finished bell skirt. Sorry no photos yet. Mine's wearing my Ren. Faire dress and hat, so I can keep decorating the hat and so maybe the wrinkles will hang out of the dress (I hate ironing). Mine has a head I made from a Styrofoam wig head, so I could see the hat and outfit together. -- Carolyn Kayta Barrows -- “The future is already here, it is just unevenly distributed.” -William Gibson -- ___ h-costume mailing list h-costume@mail.indra.com http://mail.indra.com/mailman/listinfo/h-costume
Re: [h-cost] Happy Birthday to me!
I believe we've discussed the merits of various dress forms on this list before, if you want to check the archives, or google the terms h-cost AND 'dress form'. My advice on what to avoid is the plastic dial up types, as they will never get near your own body shape, even if the bust, waist, and hips are right. Your torso may be longer or shorter, or need less padding or more padding in certain areas. I hated mine. I now use a Uniquely You dress form that I have taken a knife to certain parts, and padded other parts. This is why some prefer the type that comes with padding, or use a form that is too small and pad up as needed, or make your own My Twin dress form in foam. It just depends on what works for your budget and time. And Happy Birthday! Whatever you decide, enjoy it. Mine has really helped me fit garments so much better now. Re: [h-cost] What's your dressmaker's dummy wearing today?
At my sewing machine is an about half-finished men's corset for hubby. Should make fitting most of the costumes a little easier, to have the tummy (I guess I'm too good a cook?) held in a bit. Nothing fancy, just plain tan cotton canvas.
