Re: [Hardhats-members] GT.M upgrade -- howto?

2006-05-08 Thread Michael Zacharias

I may be wrong here, but I think that all that is required to upgrade GT.M is
to perform the database upgrade. (mupip upgrade if I remember correctly). This
shouldn't harm the existing data (i.e your .dat files). Existing routines
should be fine as well, possibly only requireing a re-compile.

Bhaskar will be better able to answer this, but I believe the upgrade details
can be found in the documentation on sourceforge.

Subject: [Hardhats-members] GT.M upgrade -- howto?

Since I am working on a new server, perhaps now would be a good time
to upgrade my version of GT.M.

Can I just download the files from sourceforge and run the install
script? I shouldn't overwrite any VistA data, right? I have all the
data (mumps.dat) in a separate directory. But what about all the
files that get copied, renamed etc. via the christening process? Do
those live in the VistA directory? I think so.

Any pitfalls to avoid?

My understanding is that Rick has jsut completed the patching etc. to
prepare the base system which will then be stripped down to form Stone
Cutter and be used in the Fileman project.

Re: [Hardhats-members] AIDA GTM

2006-04-06 Thread Michael Zacharias
I took a stab at Aida a few years back, but gave up. Without a proper
tutorial/documentation, the learning curve is too steep and my time/efforts
were better spent elsewhere.

I found the ESIObjects stuff for GT.M to be better and much easier to learn.

Yes, Aida is what you think it is, but with just a JDBC driver, and no ODBC

figure out how to map the Fileman files to SQL tables. Lots of potential,
but not something for the faint-hearted.

 A simpler route to SQL/ODBC access is KB_SQL (http:www.knowledgebasedsys.com)
but you will need to buy a license, and you will need an ODBC/JDBC bridge.

 Hi all,

In the URL : http://www.sanchez.com/news_2001/nr_010618.asp;, I found the
following data The collection of open source GT.M applications includes
Aida, a relational (SQL) engine for a GT.M database with an ODBC/JDBC driver
and a Java GUI using the Swing classes.

What I could infer from the above is, Aida is a relational SQL Engine ... ie
sort of interface to GTM dataface and ODBC/JDBC drivers are available to
 access this Aida.

Will the data entered into Aida will be automatically updated into GTM
database ? Can we write our custom Java frontend to access the globals of GTM
? If yes can any one help me in finding tutorial / guidance sort of thing.

the /home/voe/OpenVistA/g directory and see if there is a .gld file and a .dat
file. If not, you will need to create them before you can load the zwr files.

I just looked at Nancy's script, and it will create the .gld and .dat files for
you. It also sets up all environment variables and correctly defines the
segment and region parameters in the .gld file. I would take a look at it, and
modify the file paths so that it will import your zwr files. That would be the

It seems that Borland uses a different calling pattern for its

Re: [Hardhats-members] Learn More ListManager

2006-03-23 Thread Michael Zacharias
List Manager (LM) has proven to be a pretty useful tool. I used it to
(somewhat) quickly build a result reporting tool where the user can search by
DOB or name to come up with a list of test results from our new lab system (the
new LIS doesn't have a search by DOB function. As most of our HIV data is
non-nominal, the clinic needs to be able to search by DOB to determine new
cases). Once they get a list of results, they can drill down to look at the
patient demographics, test name/result, ordering physician information, etc.

The LM Developer Guide on the VDL seems to be a draft document, last updated in
1998. It does a good job of showing the basics, but doesn't show some of the
more advanced stuff I was really interested in (protocols that deal with the
VistA evetn model, for example). I built our LM application by using the LM
developer guide, but also by studying how CPRS (non-gui) uses LM. As I learn
more, my hope is to be able to build an application for STD clinics. Our
clinic here has certian screen flow requirements, based on the sex of the
patient, type of tests, etc. My aim is to satisfy these requirements with LM.

The biggest limitation, for me right now, is the lack of documentation
available. THis leaves me with having to learn by trial and error. I've been
documenting everything I do with intentions of putting it all on the wiki. So
stay tuned.

I guess the biggest feature is that with the combination of LM, and the Fileman
DBS API (Screenman too), you can quickly build a nicely featured CHUI
application. I'll find out just how well featured it is as I am demoing my
software this afternoon!

thanks...

[Hardhats-members] Non-Nominal Data

2006-03-22 Thread Michael Zacharias
The majority of patients seen at our STD Clinic prefer not to give there true
name. Often times, they are recorded with only their initials and/or an alias.
I've been trying to figure out how to do this in VistA. I thought that if I
admit each patient as Doe,John (Doe,Jane) I would then be able to enter the
patients initials/alias. However, I am not able to admit more than one
Doe,John. My question is, how does VistA handle multiple patients with the
same name, and more importantly, how can it handle Non-Nominal data?

RE: [Hardhats-members] Non-Nominal Data

2006-03-22 Thread Michael Zacharias

--- Holloway, Thomas (EDS) [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Michael,

You *can* register someone with just their initials, like this:

 Select PATIENT NAME: H,TJ
ARE YOU ADDING 'H,TJ' AS A NEW PATIENT (THE 150764TH)? No// Y (Yes)

However, on my system this took 3 1/2 minutes to search through all of
the cross references looking for a match before it finally decided that
I might be adding a new patient. It would be faster in a smaller
database but it is an annoying delay. It seems to me though that you
have several more important considerations in selecting a NAME
 identifier.
 - Is the patient going to make return visits in association with the
 same episode?
 - Is the patient going to return in the future for a separate episode,
and if so, do you need to associate the patient with his/her previous
 visit?

[MZ]
In most cases, yes patients will be returning for this and other episodes.
CLinic nurses are also tasked with follow-up. Presently, we are able to
associate the majority of patients with previous visits through dialog at time
of admission. I think that this is mostly done by matching the initias/alias
DOB and sometimes address.

 - If you give everyone the same name (i.e. DOE,JOHN or DOE,JANE) you are
going to have a hard time selecting the appropriate record even with
 Identifiers.

[MZ]
One strategy that was proposed was to use STD as the last name. The name
string would then be STD,initials (ex STD,MPZ); or repeating the initlas twice
(ex MPZ,MPZ). What are thoughts on these strategies?

As Cameron pointed out, if you do want to register duplicate names,
you put quote marks around the name:

 Select PATIENT NAME: HOLLOWAY,THOMAS J

VistA will then use the Identifiers (SSN, DOB, SEX) to distinguish
 between individuals.

[MPZ]
In our present system, individual patients are asociated with a case number.
For this to also be used as as an identifier, would it be feasible to introduce
a case number as a new data item to the patient file definition?

[Hardhats-members] List Manager Help needed

2006-03-20 Thread Michael Zacharias
Hi

I have a list manager routine/template called ZTRREX that allows
searching/reporting of a file. I need to execute the routine from an external
mumps app. via EN^ZTRREX. All works well, except when I quit from the LM
routine. My external M routine prints a menu to the screen; however, the text
appears to be wrapping based on columns definitions that are set-up in LM. Is
there a way to 'reset' these definitions (i.e. I am looking for a Kernel
function call??) as I have tried different settings for $I, but none seem to
work.

I should say that I am using MSM-Unix.

thanks...

I'll try that tomorrow. What I noticed, before I left work today, is that I
can actually halt out of mumps, log back in and the problem will still be
there. This indicates to me that the screen attributes must be persistent.
Also, the problem isn't just LM. It occurs when I D ^XUP, halt out of Kernel
and return to my external M routine. This begs the question, does Kernel,
persist the screen attributes for a particular device?

RE: [Hardhats-members] HOME Device again...

2006-03-07 Thread Michael Zacharias
This will only work for a particular session. MSM captures the unix level
device (/dev/pts) and assigns it an M device number. If I set $I for CONSOLE
of the DEVICE file to this number, it will work for that session only (unless
the next time I log in and I happen to capture that particular MSM device). In
our STD Clinic, I have, at any given time, 100+ users logged into the system.
$I can't be set to each users MSM $I.

Nancy sent me some stuff that seems to indicate that I might need to set up
some kind of virtual device. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks...

RE: [Hardhats-members] Howto Export File Def's in Fileman

2006-02-24 Thread Michael Zacharias
Yeah...I only have Fileman installed, so am looking for a non-kernel solution.
Where can I find more information on the DINIT utilities?

thanks...

hmmm, In GT.M when I select option 4 from the main menu (MODIFY FILE
ATTRIBUTES) I am immediately prompted if I want to use screen mode. I do not
get this prompt in my MSM instance.

I am also having a setup problem where the DINIT fails at the step before
re-indexing the DIALOG file. I'm debugging now and will post questions when I
have dug a little deeper.

Questions/comments are appreciated...

Re: [Hardhats-members] FM22 on MSM Server

2006-02-23 Thread Michael Zacharias
ok...Finally figured out the problem. MSM uses a slightly different syntax for
the intrinsic function $Q. The problem I was experienceing with DINIT was that
it would fail due to the linetag Q^DIQGU. It would not return the correct valu
because of the way $Q was being used:

S %Z(%Z)=,%Z=$Q(%Z())  ...

MSM uses the following:

S %Z(%Z)=,%Z=$Q(%Z)

this produces the correct result, and DINIT finishes successfully.

I have one more little thing to figure out in order for FM to see the %ZOSF
global in my MGR UCI, then it is on to loading George's MSC Fileman routines.

Stay tuned...

--- James Gray [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I do not understand the value or point of this. Both examples seem more
complicated than either of the two one line statements that Kevin has below.

I guess it comes down to personal preference. I have to agree with what Greg
said about the level of abstraction. To me, I find it easier to say:

S NAM=Pat.name

This way, I don't have to know in what global/piece the data is stored, what
the IEN is, etc. When I code, I like to build the programming language up to
the application. To me, the level of abstraction of my example is one step
higher than using the Fileman API.

I do not understand how this is connected to Greg concept of making Fileman
 language independent.

I took Greg's comments of making Fileman language independant to mean not
dependant on knowing the ins-and-outs of how Fileman works. The API does a
nice job of this, but I think it could be better. I don't think this higher
abstraction can be achieved through ANSI M programming constructs. You could
do quite well using a functional programming style, but I think to achieve a
seperation from programming with the knowledge of how Fileman works, to just
programming, some kind of a compiler/macro facility is needed.

In my examples, I used a '' notation to indicate a macro. In my mind, this
would translate into a macro expansion that would contain the code to return
the patient's name. As an application level programmer, I didn't have to know
that the patient's name was in file number 200 of the ^DD global at piece
number 1, etc...That was all handled by the macro.

This is something I've thought about for a long time too. I've always
  thought
that Fileman could benefit from it's own scripting language (FSL?)
  Profile's
DataQwik has done this, and it is quite elegant. Using Kevin's example
  below,
obtaining a patient's name can be reduced to something like:

  N Pat,Name
  S Pat=CreateObject(Patient,1234)
  S Name=Pat.Name

  Or even sql:
  N sql,NAM
  k rs,err
  S sql=NAME FROM PATIENT WHERE ID=1234
  F D SqlSelect(sql,.rs,.err) Q:$D(err) D
  . S NAM=$P(rs,$C(9),1)
  . Q

(note I am sure I've screwed up the syntax as it has been a few months
  since
  I've had to do this!!).

   But
  set name=$piece($get(^DPT(1234,0)),^,1)

  do GETS^DIQ(200,1234_,,.01,,TMGOUT,TMGERR)
(more code here to parse TMGOUT)
(Just to do this example, I had to pull out the manueal to get the

  But how about a compromise?
Set up a special category of platform-independant-code. Programmers

Maybe not, but one thing is sure: It never will happen if everyone just

Defeatism is not the way to make VistA succeed.

could be leveraged to achieve object oriented code.

Here is some working code have written around a simple OO framework:

The sample program doesn't really show much of the OO abilities. I was

But each object has its own variable set and share common methods.

Let me know what you all think.

 http://www.autohotkey.com/download/

It is an opensource scripting system that can do anything from sending
key commands, to clicking the mouse at key locations, to flipping
 windows etc.

It was just what I needed. Maybe someone else will find it helpful too.

Re: [Hardhats-members] Language extensions in GT.M - a possibility? a necessity? a bad idea?

2005-10-06 Thread Michael Zacharias
i would like to add to this. some time ago, i took part in a FNF sponsered
survey on what features, progress , direction gt.m users would like to see in
gt.m. i was wondering if bhasker would be able to share the results of this
survey.

also further greg's thoughts, is it necessary to extend gt.m or use gt.m as an
implementation language to create the kind of extensions found in a product
like cache. what specifically comes to my mind is something like esiobjects...

michael

--- Greg Woodhouse [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I know this is a very general question, but given the level of interest
in language extensions, I wonder if extending GT.M beyond the existing
ANSI standard is a possibility. Of course, updating the standard is the
most desirable course, but is that an option?

Implementations such as Cache' offer extensions to the language that
are now verboten in VistA, and given the community's interest in
running VistA on GT.M, I would not want to see changes that were
 incompatible with GT.M.

[Hardhats-members] supertypes and sub-types

2005-10-06 Thread Michael Zacharias
i have been working through the fileman and kernel literature trying to glean
as much as i can, but have been unable to determine if i can define supertype

supertype, i would like to define a tb subtype or food poisoning subtype. the
subtypes would inherit the supertypes data items...

accurate for the most recent (August) version of Cache.dat d/l.

I had a Cache.dat download back in end of 2003, I followed the
installation guide and everything seems fine until I started the
CPRS client 'CPRSChart.exe'. The problem is different versions
of CPRS client and server. So I went to VA ftp site to download
the most recent Cache.dat file dated Aug/2005. The newer version
of Cache file ask for different things. For example, Access code
right from the beginning, I can get around by 'SET DUZ=1 D Q^TI'
to get start. Then at some point it mentioned device file not setup
 and I get stuck.

Just wondering if there is a more update installation guide around.

You can connect up only with CPRS and Cache on the same machine, and this
  is
for taking a look-see at the system. If you were to use this in a
  production

i get the same error message when D ^XUP. From the verbage of the message, I
am assuming that I am missing a configuration setting in the DEVICE file, but
do not know what it is. I am using the latest FIOA release, Cache 5 and WinXP.

Re: [Hardhats-members] Linux GT.M Error message

2005-04-04 Thread Michael Zacharias
If it is an assert failure as indicated in $ZSTATUS, the problem could be with
the database. The offending line of code is at ERR2+10^%ZTMS which is trying
to get a lock on ^%ZTSCH(ER)

gtm ZP ERR2+10^%ZTMS

 L +^%ZTSCH(ER) H 1 S ZTERROH=$H

I would try stopping all of your mumps process to get stand alone access to the
database, then perform a mupip rundown followed by a mupip integ. This will
report any DB errors. If there si something, then this gives you a place to
start. If not, at least you can rule out the DB...

This looks like GT.M may be doing a periodic ZSHOW dump (refer to

What is causing GT.M to do a ZSHOW? It could be a mupip interrupt (USR1

line of code somewhere that is executing it in a loop. It could be a

No, the errors were written to the vista user's home dir.

Re: [Hardhats-members] Endless printer loop caused by $Y bug (??!?)

2005-01-15 Thread Michael Zacharias
From what I've noticed, when gtm is first started up, the length and width of
your terminal window is calculated. These values are used as defaults if the
LENGTH parameter is not specified in the USE command. You can test this by
starting a gtm session in a terminal window, and enter the following at the gtm
prompt:

gtm U $P F D W $Y,!

you can exit the loop by hitting control-c combination.

If you halt out of gtm, resize your terminal window to be larger or smaller,
then start-up gtm again and run the same line as above, you will see a
different max value for $Y.

By using a value in the LENGTH parameter, you can manipulate this default
value for $Y. So, somewhere in your code you would want to have:

U FILENAME:(LENGTH=79) ; - I believe that the line numbers start at 0,
; i.e. $X=0, $Y=0 is at the top of the screen.

just my 2-bits...

Hope this helps...

LENGTH (virtual page length) is a USE parameter only. Some sequential file

deviceparameters work with OPEN, some with USE, and some with either OPEN

or USE, etc. Chapter 9 of the GT.M Programmer Manual has a table showing
allowed M commands for each parameter. Since LENGTH is a USE parameter
only, it would go in the USE PARAMETERS field of the DEVICE file entry.
 For
example, if there are no other USE parameters you could put (LENGTH=80) as
the value for this field. I don't have a recent GT.M version of the device

utility and haven't studied where the USE parameters are applied, but a
simple experiment should tell whether or not this works.

If you check the Intersystems website; I think, somewhere on there is a list of

It is an introduction to Cache technology and gets your feet wet with
developing applications, CSP pages, Cache SQL, etc.

Oh yeah, and it's free to boot...

RE: [Hardhats-members] GTM Question: Running code in the background

2004-12-21 Thread Michael Zacharias
You can use the mupip stop command to kill an M process. It takes as a
parameter the process ID to stop. This can be obtained with the Unix ps
command. I usually type:

ps -ef | grep mumps

at the unix prompt to list the running mumps processes. From this list I can
pick out the ID I want to stop and use it in the mupip stop command.

Re: [Hardhats-members] Difficulty running down database

2004-12-16 Thread Michael Zacharias
Kevin

In your script you have:
...
export gtm_vista=$HOME/OpenVista_UserData
export gtmgbldir=$gtm_vista/g/mumps.gld
...

This says that the .gld file is in a different directory than what you
described below. Just change the gtmgbldir line to be:

export gtmgbldir=/usr/local/OpenVista/g/mumps.gld

or wherever the .gld file resides...

Michael

--- Kevin Toppenberg [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
I used the standard script to set up (I believe).

 /usr/local/gtm -- gtm directory
 /usr/local/OpenVistA -- VistA routines etc.
 and
 /home/kdt0p/OpenVista_UserData -- user specific
 routines etc.

With this setup, the mumps.dat file gets saved in:
 /home/kdt0p/OpenVista_UserData/g/mumps.dat
 while mumps.gld ends up in:
 /usr/local/OpenVistA/g/mumps.gld

(It seems strange to me to have the .gld and the .dat
in different directory trees, but I'm not sure if it
should be changed or not--or what settings need to be
changed if I move the file)

 And when I type in:
 rundown -reg *
 it tells me:

 sh rundown

 %GTM-E-ZGBLDIRACC, Cannot access global directory
 /home/kdt0p/OpenVista_UserData/g/mumps.gld. Retaining
 .
%SYSTEM-E-ENO2, No such file or directory

And the kdtzerop is correct as spelled.

Still not able to rundown. Any thoughts?

RE: [Hardhats-members] GTM XDialog interaction

2004-09-23 Thread Michael Zacharias
Kevin

Nope...my project isn't as complicated as that gtm-perl one. It looks to me
like the gtm-perl project is actually compiling GTM and Perl together with some
glue code to come up with a gtm/perl hybrid!!! Yikes!!

I am simply using the Inline.pm module to link the GTM shared library with my
Perl programs. The shared library exposes 4 C functions (gtm_init, gtm_ci,
gtm_zstatus, and gtm_exit). Through these function you can call into a GTM
LINETAG^ROUTINE. This essentially lets me exchange data between GTM and Perl,
and use the two in a client server environment.

I'm looking forward to your xdialogue module. Let us know when it is
available...

thanks...
