[Ha-Safran] Miriam Roshwald, GHETTO, SHTETL, OR POLIS?

2003-10-23 Thread Aviva Astrinsky
GHETTO, SHTETL, OR POLIS?
The Jewish Community in the Writings of Karl
Emil
Franzos, Sholom Aleichem and Shmuel Yosef Agnon
 by
Miriam Roshwald

Karl Emil Franzos (1848-1904) wrote novels and stories in German,
advocating the assimilation to European culture as a way for Jewish
emancipation from the self-imposed ghetto--an approach charactertistic of
the Jewish Enlightenment. Sholom Aleichem (1859-1916), the well-known
Yiddish writer
, presented the Jewish shtetl in a deeply affectionate manner,
commiserating with its plight through tears and laughter. S.Y. Agnon
(1888-1970), the polished Hebrew writer and Nobel laureate, painted an
idealized picture of the orthodox Jewish community in days by-gone, a
veritable polis--not in the political sense, but in its religious-cultural
sovereignty. In some of his books he describes and deplores the decline of
the community due to external forces and internal degeneration.

While this book can be classified as a study in Comparative Literature,
perhaps its main place is in the domain of the Social and Cultural History
of the Jews. This fairly recent history, though victim of material
destruction, still casts its lights and shadows on contemporary Jewry. The
divergent perspectives of the three writers are as much a part
of the story of the past, as is the subject-matter they deal with.

Miriam Roshwald presents the complex picture with personal involvement,
which makes the book a lively and readable presentation.

The publishers of the above book, The Borgo Press, went out of
business after twenty-four years of activity. All the reights
reverted to me and I have bought all the residual copies of my
  late wife's book.

[Ha-Safran] Controversial Books

2003-10-23 Thread Linda Silver
There is a review of Christine Laird's A LITTLE PIECE OF GROUND in the
Sept/Oct. issue of the AJL Newsletter. It agrees with Hanna Geshelin's
opinion, expressed in an earlier HaSafran posting.

There is a review of THE ENEMY HAS A FACE by Gloria Miklowitz in the Fall
issue of Jewish Book World. It essentially agrees with Hanna Geshelin.

Reviews of WE JUST WANT TO LIVE HERE will appear in the Nov/Dec issue of
the Newsletter and the Winter issue of Jewish Book World. Both reviews
disagree with Hanna Geshelin.

THE ENEMY HAS A FACE and WE JUST WANT TO LIVE HERE are both recommended in
the New Jewish Valuesfinder.

Catalog of Jewish Manuscripts is Published 40 Years after Death of Author

In the 1930s and early 1940s, a dedicated Russian-Jewish bibliographer, I.
I. Gintsburg, labored relentlessly on his magnum opus, a catalog of the
Jewish manuscripts he found in the Institute of Oriental Studies in
Leningrad. As he neared completion of the work, the guns of war exploded
to the West. Russia was invaded. Leningrad was surrounded and remained
under siege for nearly 900 days, with little food available. More than a
million souls died of starvation and the effects of malnutrition. Among
them was I. I. Gintsburg.

Gintsburg's death, which occurred during the most trying days of the siege,
prevented him from publishing his most important work. Although he did
everything in his power to polish the work and leave it in a state suitable
for publication, and although it was prepared for publication by other
scholars several times over the ensuing decades, until now it had never
been published. The Catalog, published in October 2003, is available from
Ross Publishing Inc., 330 West 58th Street, New York, NY 10019 at
$100. For more information: www.rosspub.com

Iona Iosifovich (Osipovich) Gintsburg was born in Russia in 1871 into the
family of a civil servant. From his childhood years Gintsburg studied
ancient Hebrew and the Torah and Talmud. In 1934 he was matriculated into
the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences, which
had been formed not too long before from the Asiatic Museum of the Academy
of Sciences. >From that day until the end of his life Gintsburg worked in
the Manuscript Division of the Institute, devoting himself to a
scientifically systematized catalog of the Jewish Collection. The title of
each manuscript is listed in Hebrew, while the descriptions are in Russian.

Despite his advanced age, Gintsburg was still intensely engaged in his
research throughout the 1930s, almost as if he were making up for lost
time. By early 1941 Gintsburg's Catalog was nearly finished. However, his
health was in decline, and by the onset of winter he was no longer able to
leave the house. In April of 1942, at age 70, Iona Gintsburg died and was
laid to rest in St. Petersburg's Jewish cemetery.

Of all Gintsburg's works that have survived him, the most enduring is his
Catalog of Jewish Manuscripts, a work that tangibly illustrates his
dedication and his love for the literature of his people. He spent five
years (19361941) creating a systematic description of the entire collection
as it existed at that time, which was only possible due to his matchless
abilities and exhaustive knowledge of Jewish literature, the study of which
consumed his entire life despite the many barriers and difficulties he
encountered along the way.

Jewish Collection in the Institute of Oriental Studies Manuscript Division

By 1863 the Jewish Division of the Asiatic Museum held a considerable
number of Jewish printed books and fifteen Jewish coins. The foundation of
the Jewish Manuscript Collection comprised a collection of 300 works
presented as a gift to the Academy of Sciences by L.P. Friedland. This
collection subsequently grew gradually as a result of individual
acquisitions and contributions, large and small, from various private
donors and institutions. By the time Gintsburg was nearly finished with his
Catalog, the following major additions to the collection had occurred:

1. JudeoPersian manuscripts from Teheran, 1898, 16 items;

2. Manuscript collection from the library of Professor D.A. Khvol'son,
1909, 40 items;

3. JudeoPersian collection from Bukhara, 1915, 28 items;

4. Manuscripts from Karasubazar in the Hebrew and KaraimTatar languages,
1930, 53 pieces (manuscripts, fragments and one scroll);

5. The most recent and largest collection of manuscripts (approximately
1,000 titles) in Hebrew, Arabic, and KaraimTatar from the Karaim National
Library in Eupatoria in 1931.

The majority of manuscripts are furnished with Masoretic notations in the
margins, vocalization, punctuation and accentuation, which is of great
interest for studying the history of their appearance and development. One
codex of the later prophets (D 62) written on crude parchment bears the
date 707 AD and has the aforementioned features. There are two complete
Hebrew Bible codices of the 12th Century on par

[Ha-Safran] Why don't the Palestinians Care About Us?

2003-10-23 Thread Eli Wise
The conversation on this line has been quite interesting in recent days.
There seems to be anxiety over materials that relate to the conflict between
the Israelis and the Palestinians. I think that people are confusing their
professional outlook with their personal outlook. I echo Dr Sheynin that
this line is not a place for politics. However, I think there is a serious
professional issue. We can have in our libraries a balance of intellectual
output. This does not mean that we personally have to reflect that balance.
As professionals we often deal with materials we disagree with yet we
perform our professional tasks to the best of our ability. It is unfortunate
that anyone would go beyond that point and have their professional side be
affected by their political side. If that is the true then ALA was correct
in condemning Israel for destroying Palestinian Libraries and culture with
no mention of the attempted destruction of Israeli society by homicide
bombers. The bomber shows no deference to educational institutions, places
of worship, or any other gathering place of civilians. To favor or
sympathize their position without mentioning the other equally terrible
piece is unfair and obscene. Have we forgotten about our brothers and
sisters who have been wantonly murdered over the last three years. When will
we learn that the Palestinians are bent on our destruction either our
institutions or ourselves. Balance is proper for a collection and is
improper when it comes to our people and their survival.

I was once listening to a talk show on my way into work. The host took a
phone call where the caller said that librarians build their collections
based on their own problems. As to our discussion the caller would seem to
be right. It seems from responses that librarians take their politics into
the library. I called the program and informed the host that librarians
concern themselves with information needs of the users of the library not
their own. I believe that this conversation has no place on this line. This
is a forum for professional issues. If we are deciding whether to buy such a
film then that is valid. If our politics motivate us to buy the film it is
professional irresponsible.

I don't mean to blame anyone. All are entitled to their opinion but let us
refrain from pushing an agenda. Our organization did not answer ALA's
obscene resolution as strongly as it could have. What will we say if a
homicide bomber will inflict pain on any of our institutions. Will we still
be this political. This is AJL let it not become ALA

[Ha-Safran] Circle of violence

2003-10-23 Thread Andrea Rapp
"History shows us that violence creates its own
circle."
===
History shows that there are conquerors and victims, warmongers and
peaceful societies. Cultures are different. Some (very few, like ours)
value choice and individual freedom. Others (traditional societies)
don't value choice at all, but knowing one's role, accepting received
tradition without question, aiming to live as ancestors did in an
imagined, idealized past.
It is a New Testament, but not a Jewish teaching teaching, that says
"do not resist the evildoer."
Had no one resisted the Nazis, for fear of perpetuating the "circle,"
none of us would be here.
Neither would any of our Jewish books!

[Ha-Safran] more on evenhandedness

2003-10-23 Thread Andrea Rapp
Shutting ourselves into a box of "everyone who does not agree
completely with how I feel is an enemy"
==
An "enemy" is what I call people who have created the most enormous body
of literature of demonization of Jews since Germany in the 1930's. It
is completely comparable. American Jewish Committee has an excellent
pamphlet by esteemed historian Robert Wistrich entitled "Muslim
Antisemitism." All should read it.
The leading Muslim intellectual of the late 20th century, Sayyid Qutb,
wrote a piece called "Our struggle with the Jews." There is an English
translation by Ronald Nettler. This piece reads like Ford's The
International Jew, or worse. Jews are described as the "eternal enemy"
of Allah and of Muslims, the cause of every disaster from the poisoning
of the Prophet to the fall of the Ottomon Empire and beyond. This work
and others like it have huge audiences in Arabic.
Americans and American Jews are (again, as in the 1930's) refusing to
face reality.
Pretending that "they are just like us Americans"
-- does not serve us well.

[Ha-Safran] Conversos

2003-10-23 Thread Eve Panzer
Thanks so much to all who responded to my inquiry about allowing students
to do self-checkout on an automated system. For right now, I have worked it
out so I have adult volunteers helping. At some point I may select some
trustworthy Middle School students to be my library aides and check out books.

I have another question. A woman in our Jewish community is thinking about
writing a book about the Conversos for an age group somewhere between K -
8. She is thinking perhaps a picture book. She will probably focus on
what happened to the Jews who left Spain and may concentrate on the
Conversos who settled in Mexico. She had several questions:

1. Are there any books for K - 8th in this subject area?

2. Would there be an interest/market for a book on this subject for this
age group?

3. Where can she get background information about the Jews/Conversos during
the Inquisition, Conversos who left Spain and what happened to them?

Thanks in advance for your input!

[Ha-Safran] a balanced view

2003-10-23 Thread brendan bell
I haven't seen Relentless so I can't make any comments about it. I do
think that a library should present a balanced view. Is Israel correct in
everything it does? No, of course not. It is a country where failable
human beings make mistakes. Is the use of terroism an acceptable way of
life? No, of course not. Yet how can you face an enemy you do not
understand.
History shows us that violence creates it's own circle. The news tells
us that innocent people on both sides suffer from that violence. I believe
that only knowledge can break that circle.
I think that a balanced view should also be about the differences
that the Jewish people have among themselves. I think that only by
understanding each other can we repair the world. A library is a place of
learning, of understanding, of becoming a better version of yourself. I
think a balanced view promotes this. Thanks for listening to my two cents.

Thanks for your statement. Even in these unspeakably terrible times, we
must be honest, true to ourselves, and to our intellects. For instance,
there can be no question regarding the standing of the authors you

[Ha-Safran] Biased research and library materials

2003-10-23 Thread Nancy Sack

From: "Hanna Geshelin" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: [Ha-Safran] Biased research and library materials

Some years ago when I was historian for a professional society, I became
acquainted with the chief archivist at one of New England's foremost
universities; my society's materials were part of that collection. She and
I had many conversations about acquisitions policies and problems.
Archivists, like any other librarian or civilian who collects materials,
have acquisition policies and select what they will and will not keep.
These policies have everything to do with the kind of research that comes
out of that archive.

Hebrew University was begun by Jewish intellectuals (Buber, Freud and
others) whose philosophical view was that the Jews should establish an
intellectual enclave in the middle of the Arabs, and would spread
intellectualism and liberalism without establishing a state of their own.
So HUs early archivists' policies probably were very anti-statehood,
therefore anti-conservative groups, Zionist revisionists, the Irgun-types,
as well as the religious. Freud was anti-religious and Buber was big in the
Enlightenment. They were also pretty much anti-Sefardi because the Sefardim
weren't intellectuals. So any research that comes out of Hebrew
University's archives is certainly going to be limited in scope.

Also, don't you think it's naïve to believe that researchers don't have an
axe to grind, and won't select data depending on whether it fits their
world-view? I have read things written by Israeli "scholars" that directly
contradict things that I clearly remember from the era of the 6-Day-War,
living in Israel in 1968 and 1969, and subscribing to _Near East Reports_
and other publications for many years after that. My memory is wrong and
their "scholarly research" is right? I don't think so; not so often and
only in these particular ways!

In 1988, when I was working as a Jewish storyteller, I read about 40 books
about the establishment of Israel. Many of them were published in the 50's
and 60's. They covered a wide variety of viewpoints across the political
spectrum. While each one discussed events not covered in the
others---personal experiences of the authors---they also covered the same
events from different perspectives. These books were written early enough
after statehood and by people who disagreed strongly enough with each other
that collusion can be discounted. And they disagree with many, many of the
points made by revisionist "scholars" like Segev and Benvenisti.

I had a much younger friend who got a Ph.D. in Linguistics at MIT under
Noam Chomsky. Her politics did a 180-degree reversal as she became aware
that unless she espoused and actively supported left-wing, pro-Palestinian
politics her professional career would go nowhere. Segev and Benvenisti
have earned thousands of dollars and countless accolades due to their
political positions and "research," while right-wingers have been at best
ignored and at worst jailed (in Israel) for their views. People who tout
Segev, Benvenisti and their ilk as truth-tellers have to take a long look
at the possibility that they sold out like my friend.

Subject: [Ha-Safran] Another children's book about the Middle East situation

In the recent past weve discussed _We Just Want to Live Here_ and _A Little
Piece of Ground_, both of which are very one-sided. I just finished reading
_The Enemy Has a Face_ by Gloria D. Miklowitz, published by Eerdmans, a
YA. Its listed on the AJL recommended reading list and I just want to
mention it again here in case people havent noticed it there. Its
excellent---a readable, engrossing novel for young YAs that portrays a
balanced picture of the Israel-Arab situation.

[Ha-Safran] New Historians

2003-10-23 Thread Shmuel Ben-Gad
Shalom lachem.

Regarding the "new historian" mentioned by Mr. Katz, I think it worthwhile
topoint out that the scholar Efraim Karsh has challenged the worth of
at least some of their work (e.g. in his book "Fabricating Israeli history
: the 'new historians.'"

  Shmuel Ben-Gad,
  Gelman Library,
  George Washington University.

Mme de Gramont...was called before the Revolutionary Tribunal to stand
trial for her life. "Had she ever aided the aristocrats who had escaped
abroad?" the court asked her. Mme. de Gramont knew that if she answered
yes she would be guillotined at once. For some seconds she looked at her
judges in silence, then, "I was going to answer no," she said, "but life
is not worth the lie."--as related by Whittaker Chambers in Life magazine,
September 15, 1947.

This week I visited the Mini Israel exhibition near Latrun.
The park contains models of famous sites in Israel.

For those of you in Israel and overseas who have not
visited the park, I took 200 pictures of the park and
have placed them on the Internet.
The address of the online picture gallery is:

Re: [Ha-Safran] Relentless

2003-10-23 Thread olivia hibel
This is to bring to the attention of Hasafran members an important
new work dealing with anti-Zionism. Written by a superb Jewish woman,
Phyllis Chesler, it is:
THE NEW ANTI-SEMITISM: The Current Crisis and What We Must Do About It,
  published by Jossey-Bass. $24.95.

Phyllis Chesler's first book "Women and Madness" 1972, was a
landmark work and paved the way to a new and just way to treat women by the
psych. profession.
Let us hope this book does the same for the treatment of Israel!
