[ha-Safran]: L4U library automation

2011-08-11 Thread S Burnstein
Hi,
I'm a new librarian, and I'm looking into different cataloging
systems and software for my library that are Hebrew compatible. After
looking into various systems, I was told about L4U. When I did their
online demo, I was really impressed. If anyone uses this system or
has used it in the past, please contact me.

Also, if anyone wants to give a plug for whatever system they are
currently using, I would love to hear the pros and cons about it.

Thanks,

[ha-Safran]: Jewish Women's Choral Project

2011-08-11 Thread Yael Resnick
I am about to launch the Jewish Women's Choir Project, to bring the
voices of women together to create a CD of original choral
compositions. Along with the recording, I will be creating a website
to showcase Jewish women's choirs and composers from around the
world. I am hoping to locate as many choirs as possible who would
like to participate in this project, and I need your help!

The first phase of the project involves simply identifying the choirs
and local composers that are out there. So, if you are involved with
a choir (as a singer and/or as a composer), or if there is a choir or
composer in your area that you know of, please respond with any
information that would help me make contact. (Ideal would be the name
and e-mail address of the choir director and/or manager.)

Thank you very much!

[ha-Safran]: Tisha B'Av Thoughts

2011-08-11 Thread Basya Karp
Even though we are now in the waning hours of Tisha B'Av, I'd like to
share a few thoughts that I've learned from various places.

The sadness of the day is tempered by the fact that the Almighty
cares for us. Our actions carry consequences simply because what we
do matters to Him. Far from being a depressing date on the
calendar--one that we should simply get through so we can listen to
music, buy clothes, and get back to enjoying summer again--Tisha B'Av
is a time of hope and renewal. No matter how low things seem to be,
with a little effort and a healthy dose of optimism and faith we can
make a better future. And we can undo at least one of the reasons
for the destruction of the second Beit Hamikdosh--a little kindness
and caring for each other will go a long way.

On a personal note: My double cataract surgeries were very
successful, Baruch Hashem, and the healing is almost complete. I am
now returning to the happy business of reading, reviewing, and
recommending books. Thank you for all the mazel tovs following our
daughter Sarah's engagement. The wedding was beautiful.

[ha-Safran]: OPALS Library Catalog

2011-08-11 Thread debby...@aol.com
Dear Safranim,

We are in the process of setting up our library catalog on-line using
OPALS Library Software.

We have a question for those who are also using OPALS.

We would like to make searches easier for our patrons by having the
search turn up relevant items regardless of whether the patron uses
the Separdic or Ashkenazi spelling of the search term. For example
we would like a search for "shabbas" to find items in the catalog
that have the subject "shabbat," "sabbath," or "shabbos," even if the
subject "shabbas" does not appear in the marc record.

We would also like searches to account for nicknames. So that a
search for "Maimonides" would turn up items that have "Moses ben
Maimon," or "RAMBAM" in a subject field.

The same issue can occur on an author search where the patron
searches "Moses ben Maimon" and we want the search to turn up works
where the marc record has "Maimonides" in the author field.

Unfortunately OPALS does not currently have authority files where
these alternate names and spellings could be specified.

We are thinking we will need to add subject fields to each marc
record where there are these type of variations.

Is anyone concerned about this issues. Please let us know your
thinking and how you are handling it.

Thank you so much.

[ha-Safran]: Singing Kol Nidre...early

2011-08-11 Thread Naomi Steinberger
Dear Colleagues,

I have been asked by the producer to forward this message and announcement.

Allen Oren is the producer of "18 Voices Sing Kol Nidre". In
anticipation of the High Holidays, I'm would like to bring this to
the attention to those who might want the film for their collections
or their programs.
The film drew praise from members last year, and has since
received a three-star "Recommended" rating from Video Librarian and a
very positive review from School Library Journal.
This fall the piece is being re-broadcast on public television
around the country, will receive a theatrical screening in Toronto,
and will be part of a multimedia concert at the Museum of Jewish
Heritage in Manhattan.

IN TIME FOR THE HIGH HOLIDAYS

Want to energize a High Holidays program or your High Holidays collection?

Try "singing" Kol Nidre early.

Explore the prayer's rich story with the PBS documentary, "18 Voices
Sing Kol Nidre."

The 40-minute film, which aired nationally last fall, is available
for library purchase or screening on DVD, with bonus videos of two
cantorial chantings of the Kol Nidre and Bruch's Kol Nidrei for Cello.

The film can be ordered here on the DVD page of our website,
www.18voices.com. The price for private use is $24.95, for public
performance use $74.95.

Wrote Dorothy Rabinowitz, TV critic for The Wall Street Journal and
Pulitzer Prize winner:

"A marvellous film. It is magnificent, eloquent, and instructive. I
was so struck by its effect I watched it four times over the weekend."

"18 Voices Sing Kol Nidre" asks how a prayer that doesn't mention God
became so sacred.

How did its words bring centuries of persecution, then its melody
bring redemption?

How did one chant become so important to one people and to the world?

The answers arrive when 18 voices sing Kol Nidre, when 18
storytellers share their tales about the prayer, some experts in the
chant, some just changed by chanting it.

If you'd like to see the first 15 minutes of the piece, please click here.
http://mediasuite.multicastmedia.com/player.php?p=c7hfs3x7

If you have any questions, just e-mail us at i...@18voices.com.

We're happy to use a modern medium to discuss an ancient prayer.

 Allen Oren, producer

EVERY PROTECTION: Exploring Pregnancy and Childbirth in the Jewish

September 27 - October 11, 2011

OPENING RECEPTION: Tuesday, September 27, 4-7 pm

Until 1917, most Jews of the Russian Empire were restricted to a
region called the Pale of Settlement, whey they created their own
distinctive folk culture. In 1914 the writer, socialist
revolutionary, and ethnographer, Sh. An-sky, produced a massive
Yiddish ethnographic questionnaire to document this culture,
including many questions concerning Jewish customs and beliefs
connected to pregnancy and childbirth. In The Jewish Dark Continent:
Life and Death in the Russian Pale of Settlement (Harvard University
Press), UCSC Professor Nathaniel Deutsch has translated An-sky's
questionnaire into English for the first time, placing it within a
rich historical context. Collaborating with Deutsch and inspired by
her deep interest in Jewish women's folk traditions, Debra Olin has
created illuminating artworks that represent and explore the
dangerous, magical, and above all, powerful experience of pregnancy
and childbirth in the Pale of Settlement.

[ha-Safran]: California Jewish Writers

2011-08-11 Thread Jackie BenEfraim
Shalom Safranim ve-Safranyiot,

Our Platt and Borstein art galleries are preparing to participate in
the Getty Musuem's project Pacific Standard Time.
http://www.getty.edu/research/scholarly_activities/projects/pacific_standard_time/index.html

Here at Ostrow Library we would like to join in with a display of
books on the theme of creativity in Los Angeles post World War II
until 1980. However, not being a native Californian, I can't come up
with Jewish writers living in Southern California in that time frame,
so I would welcome any suggestions, especially authors who broke with
tradition. Please respond to my request directly.

Thank you and enjoy the end of your summer.

the interview at

book weaves together the lives of three Americans in Israel, and the
ways they impact each other. It was named a "Significant Jewish Book" by URJ.

Enjoy!
