[ha-Safran]: 6th grade short story help

2008-07-23 Thread Enid Sperber
Dear Colleagues,
Our Day School will be hosting our Israeli partnership school,
Tzahala this fall. I am pushing to have a reading component. Since
it seems unlikely that we call all read the same book (our kids in
English, theirs in Hebrew) I am thinking we might try a short story.
Tzahala would choose an Israeli one appropriate for their kids and we
would choose a Jewish American story for us. Each school would be
responsible for the translation so everyone would understand what
they are reading and when they get here we can have a group
discussion. My question to you is are there any short stories
written for 6th graders that have a Jewish American theme? Eastern
European folktales or biblical themes would not work. I have looked
at the anthology Growing Up Jewish. The stories are good but might
be a little too teen. I might be able to get past that but I am
not sure the language would be accessible to the Israeli kids.
Apparently they are very proficient in English but I am concerned
about the idiomatic speech.
When I was formulating this idea originally I wanted us all to read
Dog of Knots which would have been perfect except I do not believe it
has been translated into Hebrew.
Please write me any thoughts on this subject. I don't want to
abandon my idea but it seems to be a tall order.
With respect for your opinions.
Enid

Re: [Hasafran] Sammy Spider

2008-04-28 Thread Enid Sperber
When the same thing happens to my Sammy Spider books (I have multiple
copies because of my large population) I take the book to a printer
like Kinkos and have the loose pages spiral bound. I have to reprint
a spine label to put on the front but it does give the book more
longevity. You might even find a printer who is a member of your
Temple who will do it as a donation to your library like I do. As
much as we all would like to have them, I think it might be too
costly for Kar-Ben to do a hardcover reprint. I want them to
continue to bring us their good titles and if it means preserving my
soft covers in this way I will do it.
I will be interested to hear the responses.

[ha-Safran]: Looking for a book about a shofar

2007-09-16 Thread Enid Sperber
Dear Friends,
The Judaic coordinator at my school is looking for a book. I am
stumped. Below is her request. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

The book that I am looking for is an old black and white book about
two shofarot and their conversations about wanting to be used on the
high holidays. One is Shofty and one is Blowfy. The Rabbi asks them
what they will be thinking about if he blows them on the holiday, and
since they both have such beautiful thoughts, he decides to use one
on Rosh Hashanah and one on Yom Kippur. He also decides to let them
live in the ark next to the Torah instead of being kept in the
drawer during the year…

Please send me your ideas if you have any to
mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED][EMAIL PROTECTED]

[ha-Safran]: Children's book titled Sorry

2007-09-16 Thread Enid Sperber
Dear Friends,
My apologies for steering you wrong. When I got back to my library I
found the book I have titled Sorry was not the one that Marga Hirsch
mentioned. My book is by Sue Riley. It is a small book in a series
about feelings that was published in 1970. Each page has an example
of a what a little child might feel sorry about. The book that Marga
talked about by Jean Van Leeuwen is also called Sorry but it is quite
different. Below is the summary I found on http://Abebooks.comAbebooks.com

Ebenezer and Obadiah are brothers on a New England farm, sharing the
work to plow the fields and milk the cows. But in this tale for
readers up to 8, an argument starts one day. Obadiah criticizes his
brother's oatmeal, and Ebenezer upends the bowl on his head. Neither
will say he's sorry, and the brothers end up splitting the house and
living on separate hilltops. Each marries and prospers, but they
never speak again. It isn't until two cousins meet—Ebenezer and
Obadiah's great-grandsons—that someone finally says sorry, and the
split is mended. Illustrator Brad Sneed depicts the hardheaded
brothers in detailed watercolors with exaggerated attitudes.

Hope this clears up my misunderstanding.
Wishing you all a sweet New Year.

[ha-Safran]: New cd Let My People Go

2005-02-25 Thread Enid Sperber
This is a cd that belongs in every collection. It is a Jewish African
American celebration of freedom. It explores the shared struggle that was
our mutual connection point. The gamut is run from good old fashioned civil
rights songs to Irving Berlin's Give Me Your Tired. The high point for me
is a reminiscence by Rabbi Arthur Waskow of the life changing experience he
had with Fanny Lou Hamer at Democratic National Convention of 1964. The
production values are outstanding. This cd works as music and as history. I
highly recommend it.

I need dates for three Israeli composers:

Moshe Nathanson - who wrote Hava Nagila -
Yaakov Rotblit - who wrote Shir LaShalom - still alive
E. Zweig - who wrote the Yedid Nefesh tune. Any bio info on him/her would

[ha-Safran]: Sybil Rosen's Speed of Light

2004-12-27 Thread Enid Sperber
I just checked the stock at Ingram where I purchase many of my books. It
appears that they have 25 copies of the paperback available in their Oregon
warehouse. The Perma Bound and Sagebrush bound copies are out of stock and
on back order. It is an Accelerated Reader - Reading Counts book selection
so hopefully they will reprint it. I am not sure how that works. It is a
great book and needs to be out there and available to be read.
As to a reading guide, someone on the Sydney Taylor Committee or a former
member might be able to put you in touch with the author. She came to
convention to accept her award. She might be able to assist you with
questions and discussion guidelines. In lieu of that you might make sure
that there are adults in the group who lived through the Civil Rights era
and are able to give an eye witness picture of the times, so to
speak. It might help the kids understand how courageous the Dad in the
story is to befriend the Black people in the town and to defend the man who
is up for the job of Chief of Police(?) I haven't read it in a while so I
may not be recalling the details accurately.
Good luck and if you do come up with any sort of guides for reading the
book, please post it on Hasafran. I am sure others, beside me. would be
interested.

[ha-Safran]: Free books children or otherwise

2004-08-19 Thread Enid Sperber
I have to put my two cents into this conversation. Last week I received
yet another two bags of books; actually this time they were old siddurim.
By old siddurim I don't mean antique and interesting. I mean old Union
Prayerbooks from the 50s. When I inquired as to the nice person that gave
them to me I was told that they were dropped off with the guard
downstairs. Now I have visions of a whispered conversation. Pssst take
these to the door of Temple Israel, drop them and RUN! Other peoples
books religious or otherwise are the bane of my existence. Yikes!

[ha-Safran]: Video on Rescued Czech Torahs

2004-03-18 Thread Enid Sperber
I received the following request through my Cantor. I would be interested
in obtaining a copy of this video myself, if one is to be had anywhere. Our
congregation happens to own one of those Czech Torahs.
Anybody have any ideas?

were wondering if any of your congregational libraries might have a copy of

[ha-Safran]: Help with Israeli History questions

2004-03-10 Thread Enid Sperber
Dear Friends,

A patron has come to me with the following questions. i have no idea where
to find the answers. Help, please

-Approximately how many Arabs were uprooted during the '48 war?

-Approximately how many Jews were uprooted during the same period
('40s-50s) from the surrounding Arab countries?

-Under what circumstances were these Jews uprooted? (Actually kicked out,
or did they leave due to discrimination, etc?)

-What percentage of Israeli's are from those countries? (And what's the
best way to describe them: Oriental Jews, Sephardic Jews, what?)

Thank you for your help in advance.
