Pulo nafi rancang 131 penduduk Islam lari ke Malaysia Sep 12, 05 12:36pm Pertubuhan Pembebasan Pattani Bersatu (Pulo) menafikan dakwaan kerajaan Thailand bahawa pertubuhan itu merancang tindakan 131 rakyat Islam Thailand melarikan diri ke Malaysia dua minggu lalu. Akhbar Nation hari ini melaporkan ia menerima kenyataan dari ibu pejabat pertubuhan Islam yang diisytiharkan sebagai penjenayah di Eropah itu, menafikan bertanggungjawab terhadap insiden terbabit. Pulo turut menafikan tindakan itu dilakukan untuk mencemari imej Thailand di persada antarabangsa tetapi berkata penduduk kampung terbabit melarikan diri kerana takut kepada pihak berkuasa dan perintah keselamatan yang diluluskan baru-baru ini. Menurut laporan Bernama, pertubuhan itu menafikan sebarang hubungan dengan Pertubuhan Hak Asasi Melayu Pattani yang didakwa kerajaan sebagai
barisan politik mereka. Kementerian Luar mendakwa Pulo mengatur kemasukan pelarian itu ke Kelantan dan membawa Pesuruhjaya Tinggi Pertubuhan Bangsa-Bangsa Bersatu Bagi Pelarian (UNHCR) menemubual penduduk kampung meskipun dibantah oleh Bangkok. Lebih 1,000 terkorban Pulo muncul dalam tahun 1970an semasa perjuangan bersenjata oleh etnik Melayu di wilayah Yala, Pattani dan Narathiwat bagi menuntut kemerdekaan daripada Thailand. Keamanan dipulihkan pada dekad yang lalu tetapi keganasan tercetus semula tahun lalu. Angka rasmi menunjukkan lebih 1,000 orang terkorban sejak puak pemisah melancarkan siri pengeboman dan tembakan. Parlimen Thailand dimaklumkan minggu lalu bahawa sekurang-kurangnya 1,037 orang terbunuh manakala 1,551 orang cedera sejak 20 bulan lalu di wilayah selatan yang bergolak. Dari 1 Januari hingga Khamis lalu, sekurang-kurangnya 369 orang terbunuh dan 826 cedera dalam lebih 1,300
kejadian keganasan. Mangsa termasuk tentera, polis, puak yang disyaki pemberontak dan penduduk kampung yang tidak berdosa daripada kalangan masyarakat serta kakitangan kerajaan seperti guru yang beragama Islam dan Buddha.

Tempoh mohon permit perhimpunan disingkatkan kepada 5 hari Sep 11, 05 11:00pm Tempoh memohon permit untuk mengadakan acara perhimpunan atau ceramah, dipendekkan kepada lima hari dari tarikh majlis berkenaan berbanding 14 hari sebelum ini. Arahan itu dikeluarkan oleh Ketua Polis Negara Tan Sri Mohd Bakri Omar kepada semua Ketua Polis Daerah (KPD) di seluruh negara awal bulan ini, kata Pengarah Jabatan Keselamatan Dalam Negeri dan Ketenteraman Awam Datuk Othman Talib. Katanya arahan itu ekoran pertemuan Mohd Bakri dengan pucuk pemimpin parti PAS pada 1 Sept lepas, di mana antara isu yang dibincangkan adalah berhubung permohonan permit bagi perhimpunan dan ceramah. "Permohonan permit boleh dikemukakan kepada Ketua Polis Daerah untuk ditimbangkan," katanya kepada pemberita selepas mendengar taklimat kejadian rusuhan di
Batu Enam di sini dan Kemaman baru-baru ini di Ibu Pejabat Polis Kontinjen di Kuala Terengganu hari ini. Menurut laporan Bernama, Othman berkata kelulusan permit oleh KPD bergantung kepada soal keselamatan serta kententeraman awam di kawasan berkenaan, dan rayuan boleh dikemukakan kepada Ketua Polis Negeri jika permohonan itu ditolak. Diminta mengulas insiden rusuhan itu membabitkan penyokong sebuah parti pembangkang, beliau mempertahankan tindakan polis menggunakan gas pemedih mata serta pancutan air bagi menyuraikan perhimpunan haram itu. Nasihat pada orang ramai "Wujud kewajaran kerana berdasarkan bukti, perhimpunan itu bukan sahaja haram tetapi juga telah bertukar menjadi rusuhan, dan ini terbukti dengan alat-alat yang dibawa untuk menghadiri ceramah tersebut iaitu batu dan cili boh," katanya. Othman menasihatkan orang ramai supaya tidak menghadiri sebarang majlis ceramah atau perhimpunan yang
tidak mendapat kelulusan polis untuk mengelakkan daripada dikenakan tindakan. Sementara itu, Ketua Polis Terengganu Datuk Hussin Ismail menafikan dakwaan parti PAS sebelum ini yang menyatakan beliau enggan berjumpa dengan pucuk pimpinan PAS negeri bagi membincangkan isu permit. "Bukan tidak mahu berjumpa, tetapi masalahnya tentang tarikh yang sesuai untuk perjumpaan itu. Kita kalau boleh hendak membawa semua KPD untuk berjumpa dengan PAS bagi membincangkan isu ini," katanya. Menurutnya, beliau sendiri telah berjumpa dengan Pesuruhjaya PAS, Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang Jumaat lalu. Beliau seterusnya memberitahu, pada tahun lalu, hanya 27 daripada 605 ceramah yang diadakan di Terenganu mendapat permit, manakala dalam tempoh antara Januari dan Ogos tahun ini, daripada 273 ceramah dan perhimpunan yang diadakan, hanya 150 mempunyai permit.

PAS hopes that such shows will improve its appeal
among the younger generation and help overcome the widespread perception that it is a hardline Islamic party. However, a number of party leaders are not terribly excited. They feel the concert violates PAS policies on entertainment. The dissatisfaction is also apparent in a poll conducted by Harakahdaily, the online version of the party organ, which found that 71.58 percent or more than 300 readers expressed disagreement. Even the much respected spiritual leader of the party and Kelantan Menteri Besar Nik Aziz Nik Mat, who has openly expressed admiration for Mawi, was not spared the brickbats. Mesyuarat rahsia kementerian mengenai pilihanraya kampus? Beh Lih Yi - Sep 12, 05 2:31pm Satu siri menyuarat rahsia diadakan oleh Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi dan dihadiri pegawai kementerian, wakil Umno dan pelajar pro-kerajaan, yang dipercayai untuk merangka strategi bagi membantu memastikan kejayaan calon-calon mereka dalam pilihanraya kampus akan datang. Satu dokumen yang diperolehi malaysiakini, menunjukkan pihak kementerian menjemput timbalan naib canselor hal-ehawal pelajar di kesemua 17 universiti awam dan swasta untuk menghadiri salah satu mesyuarat tersebut, bertempat di ibu pejabat Umno pada 27 Julai. Surat yang ditandatangani oleh
ketua bahagian kebajikan kementerian berkenaan, Prof Madya Dr Muhammad Hussin, menyatakan bahawa mesyuarat tersebut yang dipanggil mesyuarat penyelarasan aktiviti pelajar universiti juga dihadiri pemimpin majlis pelajar universiti terbabit. Dokumen yang dikembarkan bersama surat itu, mengandungi senarai aktiviti dan taklimat yang dirancang oleh pihak kementerian mulai bulan Ogos sehingga September ini, untuk pihak berkuasa kampus serta calon-calon pro-kerajaan (atau aspirasi kerajaan) bagi menghadapi pemilihan kampus kali ini, yang dijangka bulan depan. Tajuk-tajuk taklimat tersebut menyentuh strategi untuk mempengaruhi calon-calon lawan supaya menarik dari daripada bertanding, taktik cara berkesan membuat bantahan, menyediakan rancangan sokongan, mengenalpasti strategi untuk memancing undi dan petua berkempen. Adalah difahamkan bahawa wakil Pemuda dan Puteri Umno turut menghadiri mesyuarat-mesyuarat mingguan tersebut sejak Julai lalu. Senarai
penerima surat tersebut, termasuklah Menteri Pengajian Tinggi, Datuk Dr Shafie Salleh dan Setiausaha Parlimennya, Dr Adham Baba. Pemimpin terpilih Apa yang berlaku ini dianggap selaras dengan percubaan-percubaan yang dibuat pada tahun-tahun sebelumnya dalam usaha untuk memastikan semua kampus dikuasai kumpulan aspirasi kerajaan. Pada masa ini tiga kampus dikuasai kumpulan anti-kerajaan (atau mahasiswa idealis). Bagi Universiti Islam Antarangbangsa Malaysia (UIA) dan Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), pihak kementerian telah menjemput wakil dari kelab aspirasi kerajaan, dan bukannya pemimpin majlis pelajar yang tidak sehaluan dengan kerajaan. (Di UIA, kebanyakan pelajar dilihat sebagai bersimpati kepada parti pembangkang, PAS). Ketika dihubungi, Muhammad mengesahkan yang mesyuarat tersebut memang diadakan. Ianya seperti mesyuarat kabinet. Kita membincangkan aktiviti pelajar, bagaimana mengendalikan pilihanraya kampus, tetapi kita tidak bincangkan bagaimana hendak berkempen untuk (calon) aspirasi kerajaan, katanya. Beliau menafikan yang mesyuarat tersebut diadakan kerana pilihanraya kampus akan diadakan bulan depan, kerana menurutnya, ia sudah lama diamalkan. Bagaimanapun, ini bercanggah dengan kandungan surat tersebut, yang menyatakan bahawa mesyuarat pada 27 Julai itu adalah yang kedua diadakan. Ditanya mengapa mesyuarat tersebut diadakan di ibu pejabat Umno di Pusat Dagangan Dunia Putra (PWTC), beliau menjawab: Mengapa tidak? Kita mampu (mengadakannya) di Hotel Pan Pasifk, jadi kami menyewa (bilik) di pejabat Umno kerana lebih murah. Tetapi kami juga pernah mengadakan mesyuarat di tempat-tempat seperti Hotel Vistana dan Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Muhammad
mendakwa, pemimpin pelajar yang pro-kerajaan dijemput menghadiri mesyuarat tersebut kerana pihak kementerian meminta kerjasama mereka untuk melancarkan aktiviti berkaitan Rukun Negara. Pemimpin majlis pelajar UIA dan UPSI bukan dari kumpulan aspirasi, sebab itulah kami tidak menjemput mereka. (Sebaliknya) kami menjemput pemimpin kelab pelajar aspirasi, kata beliau ketika ditanya mengenainya. Komen bercanggah Mengenai kehadiran wakil Pemuda dan Puteri Umno dalam mesyuarat tersebut, Muhammad berkata: Kita tidak menjemput mereka. Tetapi mereka hadir, takkanlah kami hendak meminta mereka keluar, kan?. Bagaimanapun, ia bercanggah dengan komen ketua biro pendidikan Puteri Umno, Nolee Ashilin Mohamed Radzi, yang mengesahkan menghadiri mesyuarat tersebut atas jemputan pihak kementerian. Nolee yang pada mulanya telah menafikan hadir di mesyuarat tersebut mengesahkan kehadirannya hanya selepas ditanya berulangkali tetapi menegaskan yang ia tiada kena mengena dengan pilihanraya kampus. Saya dijemput selaku biro pendidikan Puteri Umno. Kami bekerjasama dengan pihak kementerian untuk menyediakan latihan pembinaan kerjaya untuk sisawazah wanita, termasuk kemahiran temuduga...kami menurunkan pengalaman profesional kami, katanya. Beliau juga menolak dakwaan bahawa Puteri Umno terbabit dalam melatih calon-calon pro-kerajaan, sambil menegaskan yang pergerakan tersebut tidak pernah campurtangan dalam pilihanraya kampus. HISHAMUDDIN RAIS adalah seorang manusia baru dengan roh yang bebas. Beliau merupakan pendukung dan pengembang asal mazhab NGI (non-governmental individual). Dipengaruhi oleh fahaman Marxis jenis Groucho, Isham adalah lulusan daripada sekolah pemulihan pemikiran politik seperti Melbourne Tellamarine Center, Bombay Arthur Road, Ayer Molek dan Dang Wangi. Kolumnya di malaysiakini - DOTMAI - terberhenti sejak April 2001 selepas penahanannya di bawah Akta Keselamatan Dalam Negeri. Isham dibebaskan Jun lalu selepas dua tahun di Kem Tahanan Kemunting. Kini Isham muncul semula dengan kolum DOTMAI KEMBALI di mana beliau akan menulis mengenai isu-isu politik semasa, filem, seksualiti hingga kepada isu estetika kebosanan hidup.

Apabila saya melihatkan gelagat Hishammuddin Hussein, ketua pemuda Pekembar, saya tersenyum lebar. Pekembar ini sebenarnya ialah nama Melayu untuk United Malay National Organisation. Satu ketika dahulu, inilah nama parti ini. Tup tup nama ini hilang dari tetuang udara (1) hingga ke hari ini. Saya hanya ingin bertanya, ketika si Mamat ini menghunus keris puakanya itu apakah si Mamat ini tidak terfikir kenapa nama parti yang dipimpinnya ini dalam bahasa Mat Salleh bahasa penjajah. Mengikut adat resam, ini telah melanggar ajaran Ketuanan Melayu. Kemudian bila saya terbaca polemik pemuda Pekembar ini dengan Ronnie Liu Tin Khiew dari Parti Tindakan Demokratik tentang hal merdeka, sekali lagi saya tersenyum. Jangan hairan, PTD ini bukan nama parti baru. Ini nama Democratic Action Party yang telah saya sunatkan agar parti ini dapat diuji ke-Malaysianannya. Juga, biarlah parti ini membuktikan bahawa ianya bukan pro-Mat Salleh atau pro-Lee Kuan
Yew. Kalau nama pun ada bunyi-bunyi Mat Salleh, macam mana hendak menegakkan Malaysian Malaysia. Bagi parti-parti lain seperti MIC atau MCA, itu kita biarkan mereka dengan nama Mat Salleh mereka kerana mengikut surah yang saya dengar, wakil dari parti-parti ini telah pergi berbincang berbuih-buih mulut melawan British di London pada tahun 1956 untuk menuntut...oopps memohon merdeka. Bila masuk cerita merdeka ini, saya lagi tersenyum dan lagi ketawa. Sebenarnya, kes merdeka tanahair kita ini, telah menjadi sewel lagi menyewelkan. Ada beberapa perkara yang telah menyewelkan kes kemerdekaan Persekutuan Tanah Melayu ini. Jangan salah anggap, saya menulis ini bukan kerana saya tidak patriotik. Memang betul saya tidak pernah dan tidak akan mengibarkan bendera Malaysia. Ini bukan kerana saya tidak cintakan Malaysia, tetapi saya tidak dapat menghayati simbol-simbol yang dipaksakan ke susuk saya. Ketika di

Yang lawaknya, ketika kami berdua tegak berdiri menyanyikan lagu Negaraku ini, si Cik Gu (2) yang menjaga saya itu, tidak pula tegak berdiri. Rasa saya, tidak ada sesiapa pun yang berakal waras, akan tegak berdiri, kecuali mereka yang telah menandatangani surat akujanji di Universiti Sintok. Inipun kerana cari makan dan tidak dapat menjadi pensyarah di tempat lain. Arkian, saya wajib bersurah tentang kesewelan yang telah berlaku terhadap perayaan hari kemerdekaan ini. Ini bukan kerana saya ingin membela Parti Tindakan Demokratik (walaupun saya tahu Ronnie itu budak baik), tetapi saya ingin menunjukkan beberapa
fakta-fakta ilmiah untuk kita sama-sama tersenyum simpuldi minggu pasca pesta merdeka. Mari kita lihat kes merdeka ini satu persatu secara jujur. Jujur yang saya minta ini adalah kejujuran yang lebih jujur daripada kejujuran ahli-ahli parti Pakembar setelah mereka menerima duit saku dari waris saya, Isa Samad. Pertama lagu Negaraku itu bukan lagu buatan anak jati Persekutuan Tanah Melayu. Lagu ini diciplak dari Tanah Seberang. Nama asal lagu ini ialah Terang Bulan. Di zaman Konfrontasi (3) dulu, lagu ini sering dimainkan di Radio Republik Indonesia sebagai meperlekehkan Tunku Abdul Rahman kerana Tunku dianggap sebagai talibarut Mat Salleh. Ini fakta yang bukan saya buat-buat. Jika tidak percaya, sila tanya Megawati. Ayahanda Mega ini seorang Jawa bernama Sukarno yang amat Romeo. I would like to thank Suhakam for this honour to address you on a subject that you have more knowledge and experience than I do. You are concerned with human rights or hak asasi manusia. And it is only right that as a civilised society and nation we should all be concerned with human rights in our country and in fact in the world. But human rights should be upheld because they can contribute to a better quality of life. To kill 100,000 people because you suspect that the human rights of a few have been denied seem to be a contradiction. Yet the fanaticism of the champions of human rights have led to more people being deprived of their rights and many their lives than the number saved. It seems to me that we have lost our sense of proportion.
With civilisational advances it is only right that the human community try to distinguish itself more and more from those of the other creatures created by God which are unable to think, to reason and to overcome the influence of base desires and feelings. Submission to the strong and the powerful was right in the animal world and in primitive human societies. But the more advance the society the greater should be the capacity to think, to recognise and evaluate between right and wrong and to choose between these based on higher reasoning power and not just base feelings and desires. The world today is, in the sense of the ability to make right choices, still very primitive. For example those who claim to be the most civilised still believe that the misfortune which befall them as a result of the actions by their enemies are wrong but the misfortune that they inflict on their enemies are right. This is seen from the concern and anger over the death of 1,700 US
soldiers in Iraq but the death of a hundred times more of Iraqis as a result of the military invasion and occupation of Iraq and the civil war precipitated by the imposition of democratic elections are not even mentioned. There is no tally of Iraqi deaths but every single death of a US soldier is reported to the world. These are soldiers who must expect to be killed. But the Iraqis who die because of US action or the civil war in Iraq that the US has precipitated are innocent civilians who under the dictatorship of Saddam Hussein would be alive. You and I read reports of the death of Iraqis with equanimity as if it is right and just. You and I do not react with anger and horror over this injustice, this abuse of the rights of the Iraqis to live, to be free from terror including state initiated terror. Act of terror

Isn't it any act that terrifies people? Are not the people terrified at the idea of being bombed and killed? Those who are to be killed by exploding bombs know they would have their bodies torn from their heads and limbs. Some will die
instantly no doubt. But many would not. They would feel their limbs being torn from their bodies, their guts spilled on the ground through their torned abdomen. They would wait in terrible pain for help that may not come. And they would again experience the terror, expecting the next bomb or rocket. And those who survive would know the terror of what would, what could happen to them personally when the bombers come again, tomorrow, the day after, the week or month after. They would know that they could be next to have their heads torn off from their bodies, their limbs too. They would know that they would die violently or they would survive in horrible pain, minus arms, minus legs, maimed forever. And yet the bombings would go on. In Iraq for 10 years between the Gulf War and the Iraq invasion, the people lived in terrible fear. They were terrorised. Have they any rights? Did the people of the world care? The British and American bomber pilots came, unopposed, safe
and cosy in their state-of-the-art aircrafts, pressing buttons to drop bombs, to kill and maim real people who were their targets, just targets. Para peserta Persidangan Hak Asasi Manusia kecewa dengan Tun MahathirFriday, September 09 @ 17:03:40 MYTKUALA LUMPUR, 9 Sept - Peserta-peserta yang mengikuti Persidangan Hak Asasi Manusia anjuran Suruhanjaya Hak Asasi Manusia (Suhakam) pada hari ini kecewa dengan sikap Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed yang tetap mempertahankan dasarnya selama 22 tahun memerintah walaupun beliau banyak melakukan pelanggaran Hak Asasi Manusia.Salah seorang wakil Badan Bukan Kerajaan (NGO), Pusat Inisiatif Keamanan (Cenpeace) Anuar Tahir berkata, beliau banyak melanggar hak asasi manusia terutamanya dalam kes penahanan Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim yang ditahan tanpa bicara.

Katanya, dalam ucapannya hari ini Dr Mahathir secara tidak langsung mempertahankan dasarnya iaitu menahan orang tanpa bicara untuk menjaga kepentingan Malaysia.
Anuar ketika ditemui sebaik selepas ucapan Dr Mahathir berkata, beliau tidak akan melupakan Dr Mahathir mempunyai rekod yang tidak baik tentang hak asasi manusia.
"Soal tahan orang tanpa bicara Dr Mahathir nampaknya masih mempertahankan," katanya.
Mengulas ucapan Dr Mahathir, Anuar menganggap Dr Mahathir masih tidak lepas daripada igauan atas apa yang dilakukanya terhadap Anwar Ibrahim.
"Lagipun dalam ucapannya dia hanya menyentuh hak asasi di negara sepintas lalu sahaja tetapi lebih menjelaskan keadaan di luar negara," katanya.
Bagaimanapun beliau berasa hairan kenapa Dr Mahathir yang dijemput untuk memberi ucapan dalam persidangan Hak Asasi Manusia.
Sementara itu, ketika Dr Mahathir berucap, kelihatan sekurang-kurangnya tiga diplomat asing keluar meninggalkan persidangan Suhakam kerana dikatakan tidak menyenangi dengan ucapan bekas Perdana Menteri yang mendakwa Amerika dan Britain bersikap 'double standard' dalam hak asasi manusia.
Mahathir dalam ucapannya ada menyebut Amerika bersikap bermuka-muka berhubung hak asasi manusia terhadap perang Iraq iaitu menentang keganasan dan seksaan ke atas tahanan.
Tiga diplomat berkenaan difahamkan Pesuruhjaya British, Bruce Elliot Cleghorn; Duta Hungary, Tamas Toth dan seorang lagi wakil pegawai dari Kedutaan Amerika.
Bagaimanapun sejak awal lagi sudah timbul kontroversi daripada pelbagai pihak apabila Suhakam membuat keputusan untuk mengundang Dr Mahathir dalam persidangan kali ini.
Sebaik sahaja keputusan itu dibuat, sebanyak 30 NGO telah memulaukan persidangan itu apabila Suhakam enggan menarik balik jemputan Dr Mahathir.

Mereka memboikot persidangan itu kerana mendakwa Mahathir banyak melakukan pelanggaran hak asasi selama 22 tahun pemerintahannya.
Suhakam dalam sidang medianya sehari sebelum persidangan memberi alasan menjemput Dr Mahathir kerana pada waktu itu Suhakam ditubuhkan atas desakan beliau ketika beliau sebagai Perdana Menteri.

Menurutnya, cadangan pemansuhan seksyen itu akan dibawa ke persidangan Parlimen Mac depan dan jika diluluskan, polis tidak lagi akan dibenarkan menggunakan pengakuan bertulis untuk mendakwa tertuduh sebaliknya perlu `turun padang' menjalankan siasatan. Menurutnya, Peguam Negara kini telah mengarahkan polis supaya tidak lagi menggunakan seksyen itu sebaliknya diminta menjalankan siasatan terlebih dahulu sebelum merekodkan pengakuan tertuduh. Penduduk Kg Saujana bina balik rumah yang dirobohMuda Mohd Noor - Sep 8, 05 6:06pm Penduduk setinggan Kampung Saujana mengambil tindakan membina semula rumah mereka sehari selepas dirobohkan oleh Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam (MBSA) semalam. As the annual campus elections draws near, the so-called Âanti-establishmentÂ students are bracing themselves for another onslaught from the well-funded and connected Âpro-establishmentÂ faction. While the Higher Education Ministry has yet to announce a date, the polls are expected to be held simultaneously in 17 varsities nationwide by the end of the month or early next month. Currently, students are on a one-week school break and the majority of them will resume classes next Monday. Those vying for a spot on the students representative council - which comprises the winners in the election - have already started their preparations on the ground. It is also learnt that the Âpro-establishmentÂ (also known as government aspiration) faction and the Âanti-establishmentÂ (also known as student idealists) faction are in the midst of finalising
their candidates. Campus elections here are divided along the lines of partisan politics, with the Âpro-establishmentÂ team said to be sponsored by the university authorities and backed by the government while the rival faction is seen as leaning towards the opposition. Campus polls are also keenly observed by politicians as it allows them to gauge the support of students for the various political parties. Reformasi eraIn 1998, following the sacking of ex-deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim and the birth of the reformasi movement, the Âanti-establishmentÂ faction managed to sweep into power in several universities.
However, the Âpro-establishmentÂ faction regained control over the past two years amid allegations of irregularities, money politics and intimidation tactics. At present, three major universities are said to be controlled by the Âanti-establishmentÂ faction.
One student leader said the pressure imposed on the anti-establishment factionÂs candidates and supporters and the alleged unfair election rules were the most effective tools used by the campus authorities to ensure victory for the rival faction. ÂWe have substantial basis and proof to support our claim. Unfair election rules in the past have included electronic voting, the recording of the ballot paper series number, raising the amount of deposit and academic qualification to be a candidate,Â he said on condition of anonymity. (Under the restrictive Universities and University Colleges Act, students are prohibited from speaking to the media unless they obtain written permission from the vice-chancellor.) In Universiti Malaya last year, the Âanti-establishmentÂ candidates boycotted the polls after university officials allegedly refused to endorse their nomination forms without giving any reason. Previously, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) students had strongly-opposed the implementation of the electronic voting system as it allegedly lacked transparency. Introduced in 2003, the new system paved the way for Âpro-establishmentÂ candidates to take control of the university for the first time that year. ÂExtreme terroristsÂLast year, two UPM student representatives claimed that they were assaulted by varsity officials in the run-up to the polls. The duo were harassed and their parents had also received threatening calls when they contested in the campus polls as Âanti-establishmentÂ candidates. The Chinese candidates in
the faction also came under fire and leaflets accusing them of Âextreme terroristsÂ were widely distributed. The Âanti-establishmentÂ faction have also complained of their hostel rooms being raided by varsity officials whenever the election draws near. Students have also been threatened with expulsion from the residential college if they voted for the Âanti-establishmentÂ faction. The Âanti-establishmentÂ faction has also cried foul with the move to adjust the number of contested seats as this affected their chances of victory. There have also been allegations of monetary support coming in from Umno and candidates being promised cash and mobile phones.

I cannot have a sodomiser in my cabinet. Imagine a gay PM ... nobody will be safe! he told reporters after his speech at the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) conference in Kuala Lumpur. Mahathir said since the society here was against sodomy, he had acted accordingly. He also denied that Anwars sacking on Sept 2, 1998 came about because the two of them had a fallout. He claimed that these allegations
were trumped up by the media - especially gay journalists - who were championing the former deputy premiers cause."Among some media people even, they are gay. They don't like my taking action against a person for the kind of things that they indulge in. So I became a bad guy because of that," he said. Mahathir also denied he used the Internal Security Act (ISA) against Anwar and dismissed this as another fictitious claim purported by the gay media people. He added that he allowed the judiciary to arbitrate on his former right-hand-mans breach of law. Anwar, who was initially found guilty of sodomy, had his conviction overturned by the Federal Court last year following an appeal. He had previously served a prison sentence for a corruption conviction. The former deputy premier has always claimed to be a victim of political conspiracy
and that the charges were trumped-up. Damned if I did, damned if I dont In his speech earlier, Mahathir cited Anwars case and said that he was always in a lose-lose situation when having to choose whether or not to use the ISA. Not detaining a person without trial would not help either. And so when a former DPM (deputy prime minister) was charged in court, defended by nine lawyers and found guilty through due process, all that was said was there was a conspiracy. So youre damned if you use the ISA and you are dammed if you dont use the ISA, he told the audience. However, despite Mahathir's denials, Anwar was indeed held under the ISA for nine days following his sacking before being produced in court. At the press conference, Mahathir was also quizzed on why he had not taken action against then-Inspector General of Police (IGP) Rahim Noor for assaulting Anwar. Because I didnt know then that he (Rahim) did it. I only knew later. He was a senior officer and there was no evidence against him (then), he replied. When Anwar was brought to court on Sept 29, 1998, he appeared with a black eye and a bruised right hand. He claimed that Rahim had repeatedly punched him. Anwar subsequently initiated legal proceedings against the former IGP and on Aug 3 this year, received a public apology from Rahim for the assault. The out-of-court settlement resulted in Anwar withdrawing the assault
suit.In addition, the High Court last month ordered author Khalid Jafri to pay Anwar RM4.5 million for making a series of allegations, which included accusations of sodomy, made in his book '50 Dalil mengapa Anwar tak boleh jadi PM' (50 Reasons Why Anwar Cannot be PM). The book, published in early 1998, had sparked the downfall of Anwar.Meanwhile, Mahathir was also bombarded with numerous questions related to his stand on human rights as his presence at the Suhakam function was criticised by many - especially human rights activists and civil groups. Earlier during his speech, a number of foreign envoys, including British High Commissioner Bruce Elliot Cleghorn, walked out after they were irked by Mahathirs accusations that the Americans and British were hypocritical in
their call for human rights.

Yang Dipertua Majlis Agama Islam Pattani Abdul Rahman Daud berkata, langkah itu dilihat sebagai satu-satunya jalan yang boleh menyelesaikan masalah yang sudah berlarutan sejak 20 bulan lalu. "Kita harap masalah ini diserahkan kepada sebuah jawatankuasa untuk bertemu Thaksin dan membincang agar masalah yang berlarutan sekarang, dapat diselesaikan," katanya kepada pemberita selepas mengimamkan solat sunat hajat di Kampung Kenuak, Daerah Ragae di Narathiwat (selatan Thai), semalam. Kira-kira 2,000 penduduk kampung dan pemimpin
masyarakat, hadir di majlis itu yang diakhir dengan doa selamat, memohon kepada Allah SWT agar bencana yang menimpa rakyat yang beragama Islam di wilayah yang bergolak itu, akan berakhir. Abdul Rahman berkata, banyak jalan penyelesaian boleh dilakukan sekiranya semua pihak turut memberi kerjasama, termasuk kerajaan tidak menakutkan rakyat melalui tindakan ketenteraan. Sejak Januari lalu, lebih daripada 800 orang telah mati kerana keganasan di tiga wilayah selatan Thailand - Narathiwat, Yala dan Pattani di mana lebih 80 peratus daripada penduduknya beragama Islam. Juga terdapat laporan bahawa ramai penduduk Islam sedang menunggu di pekan-pekan di
sempadan untuk memasuki Malaysia dan mendapatkan perlindungan ekoran keganasan yang berlaku hampir setiap hari di wilayah itu.
Thailand lantik pegawai Islam jadi panglima angkatan tentera Sep 9, 05 10:45am Kerajaan Thailand mengumumkan pelantikan penolong pemerintah tentera Jen Sonthi Boonyaratkalin sebagai Panglima Tentera Diraja Thai, rakyat Islam pertama negara ini yang memegang jawatan itu. Dalam satu kenyataan semalam, kerajaan Thailand menyatakan, pelantikan Sonthi dan rombakan yang melibatkan beberapa pegawai tentera negara ini telah mendapat perkenan Raja Bhumibol Adulyadej. Sonthi yang menggantikan Jen Pravit Wongsuwan, akan memulakan tugasnya pada 1 Oktober ini. Sekurang-kurang tiga orang diplomat asing keluar meninggalkan persidangan tahunan Suhakam hari ini apabila bekas Perdana Menteri, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad berucap mengkritik Amerika Syarikat yang didakwanya bersikap dwi-standard dalam hal asasi manusia. Difahamkan, seorang daripada mereka ialah Pesuruhjaya Tinggi British, Bruce Elliot Cleghorn dan seorang lagi adalah pegawai daripada Kedutaan Amerika. Kritikan Dr Mahathir itu tidak disenangi mereka apabila beliau menuduh Amerika bersikap hipokrit mengenai hak asasi manusia berhubung perang Iraq, perang menentang keganasan dan seksaan ke atas para tahanan. Ketika ditanya mengenainya dalam sidang akhbar
kemudiannya, Dr Mahathir berkata: Mereka berhak untuk keluar.

"Saya dijemput oleh Suhakam untuk menghadiri majlis perasmian Persidangan Hari Hak Asasi Manusia, katanya. "Saya menerimanya sebagai tanda hormat kepada Suhakam dan Tun Mahathir selaku bekas Perdana Menteri Malaysia, katanya. At least three foreign envoys staged a walkout when former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad criticised the United States and the United Kingdom for their alleged double standards in defending human rights during his speech at the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) annual conference today. British High Commissioner Bruce Elliot Cleghorn (photo) and Hungarian ambassador Tamas Toth were among them. Mahathir had irked the delegates when he accused the US and UK of being hypocritical in its call for human rights in relation to the war on Iraq, the war on terrorism and the torture of its prisoners. Quizzed on the incident at a press
conference later, the former premier said: They have the right to walk out.
"They have the right to criticise me like I have the right to criticise them," he added.
Abuse and misrepresentationCleghorn later issued a one-paragraph statement which was emailed to malaysiakini. "I was invited by Suhakam to attend the opening of their Human Rights Day conference," said the British envoy.
"I accepted out of respect for Suhakam and for Tun Mahathir as a previous prime minister of Malaysia. Unfortunately I found myself listening to abuse and misrepresentation about my country. I therefore left."
Suhakams decision to invite Mahathir to address the conference had proven to be controversial from the outset. Several non-governmental organisations had boycotted the conference after Suhakam refused to strike the former premier of its list of speakers. The organisations had accused Mahathir of violating numerous human rights during his 22-year tenure in office.

Pilihanraya kampus: Pertembungan dua kumpulan pelajar bermula...Beh Lih Yi - Sep 9, 05 6:25pm Terjemahan Ketika pilihanraya kampus semakin hampir, kumpulan pelajar yang didakwa anti-kerajaan akan sekali lagi berdepan dengan cabaran calon kumpulan pro-kerajaan yang didakwa mendapat sokongan dari pihak universiti. Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi belum lagi mengumumkan tarikh pilihanraya teresbut, tetapi ramai yang menjangka ia akan diadakan serentak di 17 universiti di seluruh negara pada hujung bulan ini atau awal bulan depan. Pada masa ini, para pelajar sedang bercuti seminggu dan majoriti daripada mereka akan menyambung semula pengajian Isnin ini. Calon-calon yang bakal bertanding sebagai anggota Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar telahpun membuat persiapan untuk berkempen.
Adalah juga difahamkan, kumpulan pro-kerajaan yang dikenali sebagai kumpulan aspirasi kerajaan dan kumpulan anti-kerajaan yang dikenali sebagai kumpulan mahasiswa idealis, kini dalam peringkat akhir memilih calon masing-masing. Kumpulan aspirasi kerajaan dikatakan ditaja oleh pihak berkuasa universiti dan disokong oleh kerajaan, manakala kumpulan mahasiswa idealis dilihat cenderung kepada pembangkang. Pilihanraya kampus sentiasa mendapat perhatian ahli-ahli politik kerana ia mencerminkan sokongan pelajar kepada pelbagai parti politik di negara ini. Era reformasiPada tahun 1998, berikutan pemecatan bekas Timbalan Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim dan kelahiran gerakan reformasi, kumpulan mahasiswa idealis berjaya menguasai beberapa buah universiti. Bagaimanapun, kumpulan aspirasi kerajaan berjaya menguasai semula sejak dua tahun lalu di tengah-tengah dakwaan wujudnya salahlaku, politik
wang dan taktik ugutan sewaktu pilihanraya kampus. Pada masa ini, tiga universiti utama dikatakan dikuasai oleh kumpulan mahasiswa idealis. Seorang pemimpin pelajar berkata, tekanan dikenakan ke atas calon kumpulan mahasiswa idealis dan penyokongnya serta peraturan pemilihan yang tidak adil digunakan sepenuh oleh pihak berkuasa kampus untuk memastikan kemenangan kumpulan aspirasi kerajaan. Kita mempunyai asas dan bukti untuk menyokong dakwaan kami itu. Peraturan pemilihan yang tidak adil pada masa lalu, termasuklah pengundian secara elektronik, nombor siri kertas undi dicatat, serta menaikkan jumlah wang deposit dan kelayakan akademik calon, katanya yang tidak mahu namanya disebut. (Di bawah Akta Universiti dan Kolej Universiti, pelajar dilarang bercakap kepada pihak media kecuali mendapat kebenaran bertulis daripada naib canselor). Di Universiti Malaya, calon-calon kumpulan mahasiswa idealis telah memulau pilihanraya kampus selepas pegawai
universiti didakwa enggan mengesahkan borang pencalonan mereka tanpa memberi sebarang sebab. Sebelum ini, pelajar Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) membantah keras pelaksanaan sistem pengundian elektronik yang didakwa kurang ketelusan. Sistem pengundian itu yang diperkenalkan pada tahun 2003, telah membolehkan calon-calon aspirasi kerajaan menang besar dan untuk pertamakalinya tahun itu, menguasai Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar. Ibu bapa calon diugutTahun lalu, dua perwakilan pelajar UPM mendakwa mereka diugut dan ibu bapa mereka juga menerima ugutan melalui telefon apabila mereka bertanding dalam pilihanraya kampus mewakili kumpulan mahasiswa idealis. Manakala calon-calon terdiri daripada pelajar Cina turut menjadi sasaran apabila risalah yang menuduh mereka sebagai pengganas disebarkan secara meluas. Kumpulan mahasiswa idealis turut mengadu yang bilik asrama mereka digelidah oleh para pegawai
universiti setiapkali pilihanraya kampus hampir tiba. Para pelajar juga diugut tidak akan dibenarkan tinggal di kolej kediaman universiti jika mereka mengundi menyokong kumpulan mahasiswa idealis. Terdapatnya dakwaan wujudnya sumbangan kewangan dari Umno dan calon-calon dijanjikan ganjaran dalam bentuk wang dan telefon bimbit.

Saya terpanggil untuk menulis apabila membaca tulisan Heidi Mehdi bertajuk UKM semakin primiti. Pengalaman saya di Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIA) juga menarik. Biasanya jika seseorang pensyarah memilih untuk meletak jawatan, mereka akan 'didendami' dan tidak akan diberi laluan untuk mengajar secara sambilan di UIA. Walhal, khidmat dan kepakaran pensyarah tersebut amat diperlukan bagi melahirkan ilmuwan terbilang. Contohnya, saya pernah diberitahu bahawa Prof Madya Dr Daud Bakar, bekas Timbalan Rektor UIA yang meletakkan jawatan, tidak diberi laluan untuk mengajar di UIA secara sambilan. Kepakaran Prof Madya Dr Daud Bakar dalam perbankan Islam dan Takaful amat dikagumi bukan sahaja oleh pengamal perbankan di Malaysia, malah oleh masyarakat antarabangsa. Jadi, tidak mustahil beliau dilantik
sebagai konsultan syariah di Arab Saudi, Dubai dan lain-lain negara. Beliau juga turut diundang untuk menjadi pensyarah pelawat di universiti di Switzerland dan Singapura. Alangkah ruginya dasar UIA yang sedemikian. Sepatutnya, UI

The majority of the public universities have agreed to allow the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) to monitor the campus elections this year, following previous allegations of scare tactics, irregularities and money politics during the annual exercise.Commissioner Prof Hamdan Adnan told malaysiakini that a meeting between the commission and representatives of the student affairs department of the universities had been held two weeks ago at Suhakams headquarters in Kuala Lumpur. Of the 17 universities invited to the meeting, 10 sent representatives - including Universiti Malaya, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Universiti Sains Malaysia. Suhakam, he said, requested the universities to conduct the elections in a free and fair manner, when it is held either
later this month or early next month. Hamdan said the university representatives had said they would try their best. We also asked whether Suhakam could monitor the campus elections, to which they had no objections. We will work closely with the campus authorities this time, Hamdan said when contacted yesterday. The previous obstruction we faced was (a result of) the vice-chancellors (getting the) impression that we only listen to students and (that we were out to) make trouble for them, he said.But we have since explained to them we want to hear from them too and to investigate (the claims) thoroughly. No request yet Asked whether Suhakam is prepared to conduct the monitoring, Hamdan said: We will look into
it. We will co-operate with the universities. The students have not submitted their official request (for monitoring) to Suhakam. Last year, Suhakam had sought the approval of the higher education ministry and university authorities to monitor the campus elections after receiving a number of memoranda from students groups. However, the commission was given the runaround. The ministrys parliamentary secretary Dr Adham Baba was reported as questioning Suhakams capacity to monitor the elections and argued that there is no provision under the Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA) to allow an external body to monitor the campus polls. At present, there is no independent body to oversee the campus elections as the polls are conducted by an election commission in each campus, headed by the deputy vice-chancellor of student affairs. A students coalition, the Malaysian Students Solidarity, issued a statement last week urging Suhakam, human rights bodies Human Rights Society of Malaysia (Hakam) and Suaram to monitor the campus polls. Support for Suhakam Hakam and Suaram, when contacted for comments, threw their support behind Suhakam as the official monitor of the campus elections. Hakam deputy chief Malik Imtiaz Sarwar said the commission is the best body for this since it is a statutory body established to oversee violations of human rights and to recommend steps to rectify problems. Malik said Hakam is interested in seeing free and impartial campus polls and that it is willing to assist all actors in the scenario, including Suhakam, to monitor the elections. He also rebutted the ministrys argument that Suhakam is not empowered to monitor the polls, saying in the interests of transparency and accountability, no
objection should be raised to Suhakam monitoring the polls. Suaram co-ordinator Chang Lih Kang said he would write to local universities to seek permission for monitoring, noting that campus authorities should not turn down the application if they had nothing to hide. There have been many allegations of irregularities, which have resulted in the students losing faith in the authorities. So, why not let an external body monitor the polls? he asked. Chang, a former student leader, also strongly objected to the implementation of the electronic voting system in certain universities. He said this was against the principles of natural justice because there is no mechanism for check and balance in such a system.

Thailand has blamed the flight of 131 Thai Muslims to neighbouring Malaysia on an Islamic separatist group, saying it wanted to internationalize the conflict along the border.The government rarely singles out any group in the 20-month conflict, usually referring only to unnamed militants in the Muslim-majority southern provinces. But in a statement released late Wednesday, foreign ministry spokesman Sihasak Phuangketkeow said the Patani United Liberation Organisation (Pulo), sparked the incident and alerted the UN refugee agency in a bid to internationalize the unrest. Sihasak accused Pulo of stirring rumours to frighten the villagers into fleeing to Malaysia. At the same time, he said Pulo had created a new human rights section called the Patani Malay Human Rights Organisation (PMHRO) to take up the cause of the villagers and tarnish Thailand's image through its website. "As soon as the incident occurred, this PMHRO contacted the (UN High
Commissioner for Refugees) office in Switzerland ... and said that those Thai villagers had fled for fear the Thai government would kill them after imposing the emergency decree," Sihasak.
UNHCR interviewThe emergency decree came into force in the three southernmost provinces in July and allows authorities to detain suspects for up to 30 days without charge. It also gives authorities immunity from prosecution. The villagers who fled had taken part in the Tak Bai protest last October, one of the bloodiest days in the conflict, when 87 demonstrators died as authorities broke up a demonstration, Sihasak added. Most died of suffocation when they were detained, bound and then piled onto military trucks. The UNHCR on Tuesday started interviewing the 131 Thai Muslims sheltering in Malaysia after they fled last week, despite opposition from Bangkok. Malaysia has given temporary shelter to the Thais pending investigation of their status and reasons for leaving, but has voiced concern over the
prospect of more Thais fleeing across the border. Nearly 900 people have been killed in the past 20 months in Thailand's southernmost provinces, in attacks which analysts and authorities blame on Islamic separatists, organised criminals and drug dealers.

From what started off as an immigration technicality that could have been handled by agencies at the local level, the 131 Thai Muslims taking shelter in northern Malaysia have effectively become an international issue putting Thailand and Malaysia, once again, at loggerheads.
The United Nations refugee agency began interviewing the 131 Thai Muslims this week and yesterday former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohammed weighed in, suggesting they should be given asylum.
In spite of Thailands objection to internationalising the incident, Kuala Lumpur decided earlier this week to broaden the issue by bringing the UN High Commissioner on Refugees (UNHCR) into the picture.
Bangkok was dumbstruck, left with nothing much to say other saying that these 131 people, who no longer trust government security forces to treat them fairly, were not refugees.
From the onset, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was quick to brand the 131 as troublemakers. He said some in the group were suspected insurgents involved in the ongoing violence in the region. Moreover, he suggested that locals were to blame for the unrest, which he said could be stopped if they would cooperate with authorities by pointing out the insurgents.
Thaksin and his crew are likely prejudging Muslims in the restive South as usually harbouring insurgents and cooperating with militants to make trouble for the government. None of the concerned agencies have ever scrutinised the incident in Narathiwats Ban Rahan to get a clear picture about what really happened those statements were made.
According to the villagers account, after the murder of an imam in the village on August 29 local residents lost faith in the states justice system and barred security officials from entering their village. They believed government officials were involved in the murder because the iman, Satohpa Yusoh, had told witnesses before he was shot dead that he was being followed by officials who thought he was one of the key insurgents in the strife-torn region.
He gave instructions not to allow any local government official to perform an autopsy on his dead body as they could distort the evidence.
As 100 villagers, including women and children, blocked the road to obstruct security officials from inspecting the murder scene, the government threatened to use the new emergency decree to punish them. Shortly thereafter, the Muslims fled across the border.

majlis ilmu dan mendampingi ulama, kita semakin hampir dengan Allah s.w.t. BIODATA RINGKAS SYEIKH NURUDDIN : Al-Fadhil Syeikh Nuruddin Bin Hj. Marbu Bin Abdullah Thaiyyib bertasal dari Banjar Masin. Dilahirkan di sebuah desa bernama Harus Amuntai pada 1 September 1960 M. Beliau dan keluarganya kemudiannya menetap di tanah suci Makkah pada tahun 1974. Madrasah Shaulathiah adalah tempat beliau menimba ilmu pengetahuan di sana. Pada tahun 1982 beliau menamatkan pengajian di madrasah Shaulathiah dengan keputusan cemerlang (mumtaz). Sepanjang di Makkah beliau banyak mendapatkan ilmu dari tokoh-tokoh ulama seperti Syeikh Allamah Hasan Masshath yang digelar Syeikul-Ulama rahimahullah, Syeikh al-Allamah Mohd Yasin Al-Fadani yang bergelar Syeikul Hadith wa Musnidud Dunya, Syeikh Ismail Usman Zain yang digelar Al-Faqih Ad-Darrakah dan ramai lagi tokoh-tokoh ulama di Makkah. Pada tahun 1983
beliau melanjutkan pelajaran ke Univ. Al-Azhar As-Syarif Mesir dalam jurusan Syariah Islamiah hingga mendapat ijazah sarjana muda. Kemudian beliau meneruskan lagi pengajian di Maahad 'Ali Liddirasat al-Islamiah di Zamalik hingga mendapat diploma am "Dirasat Ulya" pada tahun 1990. Setelah menamatkan pengajian di univ. al-Azhar, beliau menumpukan perhatiannya dengan mencurahkan ilmunya kepada ratusan pelajar yang datang dari Asia termasuk dari Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapura dan Thailand yang menuntut di Univ. al-Azhar Mesir sehingga beliau digelar sebagai al-Azharus Tsani ( Univ. Student involvement in politics always excites me Â it is an important aspect of Âlived democracyÂ. It reminds me of my college days as one who was and still is, fascinated by the translation of theory into practice. I had good professors, namely ex-Southeast Asian Peace Corp teachers who are children of the 1960s and who taught us the importance of activism. As a former student leader, the theories of radical critique of society we read in class were used as a foundation of our protests. In those days, it was against the system of apartheid. Closer to Malaysian politics, I was a strong advocate of the philosophy of multiculturalism and cultural action for freedom. Till now though, I remain politically neutral, committed only to the advancement of transcultural philosophy. Activism in America is coming back in the form of a systematic, sustained, and concerted programme of anti-war radicalism with the children of the baby boomers from the ÂBlue statesÂ populating the movement.In the history of campus student activism, many student leaders became theoreticians and mentors to younger generations. Among them are Abbie Hoffmann, Stanley Aronowitz, Michael Harrington, Herbert Marcuse, Irving Howe, and many others.Electronic voting system suspect Any totalitarian state will be fearful of student activism. Structures of domination are imposed, distractions designed, student movements monitored, and issues versus non-issues created. Television, the good olÂ tool of mass deception, is deployed to the fullest extent.The use of the electronic voting system (which is used in some campuses) is suspect in a country like Malaysia. Who monitors the validity, reliability, or the functioning of these electronic voting systems? In addition to the above high-tech form of ÂcontrolÂ, the use of primitive technologies of command and control such as voter intimidation, scare tactics, race-based enforcement of double standards in accessibility to campaigns, psychological warfare on the mind of the already docile Malaysian university students, and the use of the Universities and University Colleges Act to its fullest extent Â also exemplify the functioning of the totalitarian state. One of the OIC's duties is to determine the guaranteed status and safety of Muslim minorities in non-Muslim countries," Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar told a news conference. Malaysia is current chair of the 57-member Organisation of the Islamic Conference. "Whatever happens in southern Thailand has a direct effect on us," Syed Hamid added. "Surely we are not going to stay silent. As a friend and as a fellow Asean(Association of Southeast Asian Nations) country, of course we will express our opinion without interfering in Thailand's internal affairs." Thai Prime
Minister Thaksin Shinawatra Monday said the two countries were working closely to prevent the status of the Thai Muslims from boiling over into a "political issue." Syed Hamid said Malaysia would not interfere in Thailand's internal affairs but also called on it to be "sensitive to their neighbours and their neighbours' fears." When asked if there was any evidence that Thai insurgents were seeking support from the Malaysian side of the border to "internationalise" their struggle, Syed Hamid said: "There is no such evidence." "In the first place we do not support insurgents from the Thai side. We have not given money, nor have we given protection to the Thai insurgents," he said pointing out that Malaysian authorities had strengthened border security.
Temporary shelter
The undocumented Thai Muslims fled into Malaysia's northeastern state of Kelantan last week, saying they had left their villages in Thailand's Narathiwat province after the army arrived. Mainly Muslim Malaysia has given temporary shelter to the Thais pending investigation of their status and reasons for leaving, but has voiced concern over the prospect of more Thais fleeing across the border. Nearly 900 people have been killed in the past 20 months in Thailand's southernmost provinces, which are home to most Muslims living in the mainly Buddhist nation. The violence has been blamed on a mixture of Islamic separatists, organised criminals and drug dealers.

Malaysian Muslim leaders are urging Thailand to drop its hardline stance on the southern provinces where an insurgency is raging, and say they will harbour any refugees from the crisis.Political and religious leaders said that instead of reacting with force, Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra should build trust with the kingdom's Muslim minority which has been shattered by months of violence. "As a neighbour we hope there could be an amicable solution to resolve the crisis, with Kuala Lumpur playing a role. We do not want the crisis to explode," said Husam Musa, vice-president of Islamic opposition party, PAS. Husam, who is also a state assemblyman in Kelantan where dozens of Thai Muslims fled last week saying they feared for their lives, said the government's strategy to fight the insurgency needed to be reviewed. "We hope the Thai government will
not take a hard-line approach," he told AFP, warning that there could be an exodus of frightened Muslims from southern Thailand unless Thailand changes its tactics. Nik Aziz Nik Mat, spiritual leader of PAS and Kelantan's chief minister, has already been rapped by Thailand for criticising its policies on the south, which include an emergency decree that gives authorities sweeping powers. Thailand has also been infuriated by the flight last week of 131 Thai Muslims across the border, but Nik Aziz is rallying Malaysians to welcome any more that may arrive. "I appeal to Kelantan residents, if our Muslim brothers and sisters come, please give them food and drink," he told AFP. "They are our neighbours and they are Muslims and we have a common culture and origin with them." The people of the northern states of Malaysia and the southern
provinces of Thailand indeed share a religion, culture and language. With its mosques and headscarves, the Thai south looks more like Malaysia than the rest of Thailand. Muslim Thais tend to speak a Malay dialect rather than the Thai language, and complain they feel like second-class citizens in their own country - a sentiment that has helped fuel a decades-old separatist movement.
Lift the emergency decree Analysts and authorities say the attackers are a mix of Islamic separatists, organised criminals and drug dealers. The trouble in the south flared early last year, and since then nearly 900 people including villagers, security forces, Buddhist monks and Muslim religious teachers have been shot, blown up and hacked to death in attacks that have triggered an ever-increasing level of response from the government. Malaysian preacher Abdul Halim Ramli called on Thaksin to break the cycle of violence by withdrawing the suffocating military presence in the region and lift the emergency decree enacted last month. "This is one of the factors that is fuelling Muslim anger. As long as there are injustices and killings of Muslim clerics, I do not think peace is in sight," he said. He also called on Muslims to resolve the crisis at the negotiating table and not by resorting to
force. "The Thai government is backed by a big and strong military. Accept your fate," he said. Nik Mahmood, the chief of Pecah village in Tanah Merah district where the displaced Thais are being detained, also said Thaksin should send the troops back to their barracks. "The government must first calm the tense situation to create a conducive environment for talks," he said. The arrival of the 131 Thai Muslims, who are being given temporary shelter while their status and reasons for leaving are probed, has become a major irritant to relations between the neighbours. Malaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar's comment that Thailand must win the support of Muslims in the south to prevent any more spillovers was met with a frosty response in Bangkok. On Monday he said Malaysia would not interfere in Thailand's internal affairs, but also
called on it to be "sensitive to their neighbours and their neighbours' fears".

The changing global weather pattern has resulted in typhoons moving further south which has increased the possibility of Malaysia being in the path of one. 
However, there are no measures in place to cope with the after effects of a typhoon in Malaysia.A water-related disaster expert attached to the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific Dr Ti Lee Hui noted that climatic changes in recent years have been erratic, with more typhoon activity recorded in southern Asia."Typhoons used to be confined around Japan, but in recent times more high-velocity typhoons have moved towards Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Philippines, and there is a high probability that Malaysia may be hit in the future," he said at the International Workshop on Risk Management: Socio-Economic Impact Assess-ment of Typhoon-Related Disasters and Management Towards Millennium Development Goals.Natural Resources and Environment Ministry Parliamentary Secretary Datuk Sazmi Miah, who opened the workshop, admitted that Malaysia was not prepared to deal with typhoons."We are not ready in terms of
 building design as current building bylaws did not take into consideration the effects of withstanding natural disasters like earthquakes and typhoons," he said The Asian region had seen an average of 10 to 20 typhoons a year.Meanwhile, Drainage and Irrigation Department director-general Datuk Keizrul Abdullah said Malaysia will establish a Debris and Mudflow Warning system next year which will use satellite technology to monitor rainfall patterns and identify the topography and geology of mudslide-prone areas. "With the system, we hoped to minimise the loss of lives and damages," he said

Berucap di perhimpunan bulanan kakitangan Jabatan Perdana Menteri di
Putrajaya hari ini, Abdullah berkata, langkah-langkah itu akan dibincang dan diputuskan pada mesyuarat kabinet Rabu ini. "Mudah-mudahan, dengan apa (keputusan) yang akan diambil Rabu ini, kita akan dapat membuat sesuatu untuk melegakan rakyat sedikit disebabkan kesusahan yang dihadapi dengan kenaikan harga minyak yang sedang kita hadapi sekarang ini," katanya. Pengorbanan bersama Menurut laporan Bernama, Abdullah bagaimanapun berkata, dalam menghadapi situasi itu, rakyat mesti bersama-sama dengan kerajaan dan bersedia membuat pengorbanan bagi memastikan pendekatan yang diambil nanti berjaya. "Pengorbanan bukan hanya di pihak yang satu sahaja iaitu kerajaan, tetapi juga rakyat. Masa senang kita boleh buat cara senang, masa susah, kita mesti berfikir bagaimana nak atasi kesusahan. "Itulah yang mesti diutamakan," kata Abdullah yang juga Menteri Kewangan. Minggu lalu, beliau berkata kerajaan
sedang menimbang untuk mengurangkan cukai jalan kenderaan dan tidak menaikkan kadar tol lebuhraya dalam usaha mengurangkan kesan kenaikan harga minyak kepada rakyat. Harga minyak mentah kini melebihi US$60 setong dan adakalanya mencecah US$70 setong.

SYDNEY, September 5, 2005 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) - A political group applied Monday, September 5, to register in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) as Australia's first Muslim party.
"We don't anticipate a left or right wing approach - we will take a center, moderate view," Kurt Kennedy, the founder of the Best Party of Allah, told the news agency Australian Associated Press (AAP).
Kennedy, a Vietnam-born Muslim revert and candidate in the ACT assembly elections in 2004, said the party aims to provide a national voice for Muslims in Australia.
The party currently claims more than 100 members.
Kennedy hopes the party would recruit up to 500 members so it can register nationally.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) recently said that the number of Australians embracing Islam has dramatically increased since the 9/11 attacks.
There are some 300,000 Muslims in Australia, making up 1.5 percent of the countrys 20 million people.
Anti-Extremism
Kennedy said the party will stick to the rules of Shari`ah and stand up firmly to extremism and people inciting violence and hatred.
"We totally reject people who would kill people indiscriminately, you know, as violence for its own sake and that's the story, that's the end of it," he told national broadcaster ABC.
Kennedy does not believe extremists would try to infiltrate the fledging party.
"People with extremist views don't necessarily want to participate in dialogue through peaceful means in the democratic political system," he told the AAP.
"But there's a constitution and a process where people fill in an application form and the secretary can decide whether to enlist them or reject them like any other political party."
Prime Minister John Howard met Australian Muslim leaders in August to discuss ways to prevent the spread of extremism in the wake of the London attacks.
Muslim leaders pledged during the meeting to defend the country against terrorism, disowned Osama bin Laden and accepted differences with the government over the Iraq invasion.
But many Australian Muslims have decried recent anti-terror measures, which include detaining people on terror-related suspicion for up to seven days and questioning them for up to 48 hours without charges.

Red Army's 'ghosts' of Afghanistan

Nasratullah has built a new life in Afghanistan [Photos: Veronique de Vigeurie]To the men of the Red Army who fought in Afghanistan, their elusive mujahideen enemy were always called simply the "Dukhi" - the ghosts.
But when their last tank rolled back across the Oxus river in February 1989, the then Soviets left behind some Cold War ghosts of their own.
In the hills of northern Afghanistan, there are still men with pale skin who talk Russian when they are together.
Until 1981, Nasratullah was a soldier in the Red Army called Nikolai.
Together with two others, now known as Rahmatullah and Aminullah, he survives from a total of five Soviet soldiers known to have been captured and converted to Islam.
They went on to fight against their old comrades with the mujahideen.

'Terrible fight'

The ill-fated Soviet adventure in Afghanistan is often compared to America's disastrous foray into Vietnam.

Russia says 13,000 Soviet soldiers were lost between 1979 and 1989.
An estimated 1.3m Afghans, mainly civilians, also died.
Today, 45-year-old Nasratullah is a softly spoken, melancholic, chain smoker who earns $80 a month as a policeman.
But until his conversion to Islam, he was a junior officer from an elite Soviet parachute regiment.
He agreed to be interviewed only with the encouragement of his former mujahideen comrades. He remains close to the men who first captured him.

I didn't choose to convert. The religion chose me

"We captured Nasratullah during an ambush in Kaligai village in 1981," recalls his white bearded former commander, Sufi Payda Mohammed, eyes rimmed with kohl.
His mujahideen band operated in the steep-sided valleys of Baghlan province, along the key re-supply route from the Uzbek border to Kabul.
The mujahideen commander remembers "a very terrible fight" during which they killed around 20 Soviet soldiers.
Nikolai was the sole survivor, captured after he exhausted his ammunition and hid in a drainage ditch under the road.
The area around what was known as Soviet Base 80 is still littered with the rusting tanks and destroyed supply vehicles.
Local people say Russian embassy officials returned to the area last year offering cash rewards for the location of the graves of missing Soviet soldiers. They left with six exhumed bodies.
Deserter

Nasratullah himself tells a different, more ideologically-driven version of how he came to fall into mujahideen hands.
He says he witnessed a massacre of more than 70 civilians at Kaligai.

"We swore in the Russian army on the sword and the Bible to help society. It was against the law what was done," he says.
In horror and disgust, he says he simply turned and walked away from his unit.
Prisoners were often killed by both sides, but Nikolai was found by villagers who cared for him and then passed him to the mujahideen.
It was a year, he says, before he decided to convert. During that time he helped to mend mechanical equipment.
"I didn't choose to convert," he says today. "The religion chose me."
His former captors deny that any of the men were forced to become Muslims, or did so through fear.
Amnesty

They were renamed by the clerics who converted them. Nasratullah then spent eight years in the frontline with the mujahideen.

Remnants of the Soviet campaign litter the Afghan landscape
According to his comrades, the Soviet converts were decent fighters and particularly useful for listening to Soviet radio traffic.
"If you are in the frontline then you must fight and you must kill," is all he will say about fighting against his countrymen.

Nasratullah says he was born in 1960, in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. He will not give his last name.
His father was also a soldier in the Red Army and Nikolai attended a military academy, which he will not identify.
He volunteered for service in Afghanistan and served there for three months before his capture.
In July 1988, Moscow offered an amnesty to all Soviet prisoners of war in Afghanistan, whatever they had done during their captivity.
None of the Soviet converts took the offer, though all have visited their former homeland since the war.
"They said that they felt like white pigeons among black crows in Russia," says Sufi Muhammed.
"They told us 'we were devout and wanted to pray, but our families had no belief and didn't understand us'."
Disillusionment
When he visited Ukraine in 1996, Nasratullah met some of his old Red Army comrades.

He says he was relieved when they did not blame him for his conversion, or for joining the mujahideen.

The police have sought PAS president Abdul Hadi Awangs assistance in connection with investigations into two political rallies in Kuala Terengganu on Aug 26 - these turned chaotic after police used water cannon and tear gas to disperse participants.
Abdul Hadi - also PAS Terengganu adviser - received the police summons along with five other state leaders including deputy commissioners Wan Abdul Muttalib Embong and Harun Taib. Wan Abdul Muttalib told malaysiakini that they have been told to report to the Terengganu police headquarters tomorrow morning to have their statements recorded under Section 111 of the Criminal Procedure Code. I have not looked at the summons myself, but I believe it is connected to Batu Enam (in Kuala Terengganu) incident where police had used water cannon and tear gas to disperse those attending a ceramah (political talk) held in a mosque there, he said when contacted. Abdul Hadi had addressed one of the two rallies, which together drew an attendance of about 2,000. Newspapers reported that protestors responded by hurling chilli paste, rocks
and water bottles at the police. Several police cars and two flagpoles were allegedly damaged during the fracas. The protestors are also alleged to have attacked an Umno branch office and a police base, throwing bricks through the windows. Twelve people have been arrested. Right to hold rallies The incident was discussed during a meeting on Sept 1 between a delegation of PAS leaders headed by Abdul Hadi and top police officials headed by the Inspector-General of Police Bakri Musa and his deputy Musa Hassan. Abdul Hadi was accompanied by party secretary general Kamaruddin Jaafar, vice-president Mohamad Sabu, Youth chief Salahuddin Ayub, treasurer Dr Hatta Ramli and legal adviser Hanipah Maidin and Terengganu commissioner Mustafa Ali Kamaruddin said PAS had, among other matters, raised the partys difficulties in exercising their right to hold political talks and rallies. The police claimed
that they are acting according to the law, but we feel that there have been discrepancies in the administration of the law. We highlighted a series of incidents when we had encountered great difficulty in holding ceramah in Terengganu, he said when contacted. The IGP assured us that he will look into our complaints. He said the police would act professionally and abide by the law and that they want to play a role in advancing democracy in Malaysia. He also said a detailed account has been submitted on abuse by the Terengganu police against PAS leaders and supporters who attended various political gatherings between June and August. Political motive? Mustafa, meanwhile, said he hoped the report would shed light on the ambiguous actions taken by the police under a false pretence of upholding
security as allegedly happened in Terengganu. I believe the detailed account and chronology will indirectly support our allegations of the close relationship between the state police and Umno Terengganu. We suspect that there is a political motive behind the harsh police conduct. I believe the state government wants to frustrate our attempts to provide the truth about its administration. He added that state police chief Hussin Ismails failure to meet with PAS state leaders had compounded the suspicion. Even the IGP has acceded to the partys request for a cordial meeting. If the No 1 can spare some time for us, why not the state police chief? KUALA TERENGGANU, 5 Sept (Hrkh) Presiden PAS, Dato Seri Tuan Guru Abdul Hadi Awang bersama enam yang lain telah menerima surat daripada pihak polis supaya menghadirkan diri di ibu pejabat kontinjen polis di sini, jam 10 pagi esok bagi membantu siasatan.Harakahdaily difahamkan mereka dipanggil untuk membantu siasatan berhubung Ceramah Israk Mikraj yang diadakan di Masjid At-Taqwa, Batu Enam pada 26 Ogos lalu.
Turut dipanggil ialah mereka yang disenaraikan berucap pada majlis itu yang terdiri daripada Ketua Dewan Ulama PAS Pusat, Dato Harun Taib, AJK PAS Pusat, Dato Wan Abdul Muttalib Embong dan Bendahari PAS negeri, Haji Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut.
Selain mereka ialah tiga pemimpin PAS Kawasan Kuala Nerus iaitu timbalan yang dipertua, Ustaz Ismail Che Dagang selaku pengerusi pada majlis itu, Ustaz Zakaria Dagang (setiausaha) dan Dr Alias Razak (ketua penerangan).

Surat yang dihantar kepada mereka mengenai perintah di bawah Seksyen 111 Kanun Acara Jenayah Berkait Batu Rakit 1581/05 bagi membantu siasatan berkenaan kesalahan di bawah Seksyen 27(5) Akta Polis 1967 (Akta Polis) itu ditandatangani oleh pegawai polis yang berlainan.

Antara lain, kandungan surat itu menyebut: Tuan adalah diperintahkan supaya menghadirkan diri di Ibu pejabat Kontinjen Terengganu pada 31 Ogos jam 10 pagi bagi membantu siasatan yang dijalankan. Adalah diingatkan bahawa waran tangkap akan dipohon melalui mahkamah sekiranya tuan enggan atau gagal hadir mematuhi perintah yang dikeluarkan.
Bagaimanapun, persetujuan telah dicapai supaya pertemuan tersebut diadakan esok (6 September), bukan sebagaimana yang terkandung dalam surat berkenaan iaitu 31 Ogos lalu.
Pada 26 Ogos lalu, beratus-ratus polis dan anggota FRU telah menembak gas pemedih mata dan air berasid melalui "water canon" (meriam air) ke arah orang ramai yang mendengar satu ceramah PAS di Pekan Batu Enam.
PAS kemudiannya telah mengubah majlis itu ke dalam Masjid At Taqwa Batu Enam.
Tetapi, pihak polis turut menyerang masjid itu dengan gas pemedih mata.
Antara yang berada dalam masjid ketika itu adalah Presiden PAS, Dato' Seri Abdul Hadi Awang dan lain-lain pimpinan PAS yang lain.
Ceramah itu diadakan sempena sambutan Israk dan Mikraj serta penjelasan isu Sidang Dewan Undangan Negeri Terengganu yang baru selesai.
Kesemua Adun PAS dijangka berucap pada majlis ceramah itu. Majlis terpaksa dihentikan apabila polis mula menyerang dengan gas pemedih mata.
Sebelum ini, hampir kesemua majlis ceramah PAS di Terengganu diganggu oleh polis.
Orang ramai mulanya lari bertempiaran lari apabila polis menyerang gas pemedih mata.
Namun mereka datang semula dan melempar balik gas pemedih mata yang sedang berasap itu kepada polis.
Ada juga pihak membaling batu, kayu dan botol kepada polis. Tetapi tidak diketahui siapakah mereka.
Ekoran itu, 12 ditangkap dan dikenakan tahanan reman.
Bertemu KPN

Pada 1 September lepas, para pemimpin PAS yang diketuai oleh Presiden PAS sendiri telah menemui Ketua Polis Negara untuk membincangkan hal itu.
Pertemuan itu bertujuan untuk mencari jalan penyelesaian agar PAS boleh meneruskan aktivitinya di Terengganu tanpa gangguan polis.
Turut serta dalam majlis itu adalah Pesuruhjaya PAS Terengganu dan para pemimpin PAS yang lain.
Turut dibawa adalah Haji Yusof Ludin, Setiausaha Badan Perhubungan PAS Selangor yang merupakan bekas pegawai kanan polis di Bukit Aman.
Bekas Setiausaha Majlis Keselamatan Negara, Dato' Amir Yaakub juga dibawa dalam pertemuan itu. Beliau kini adalah aktivis PAS di Melaka.
Dalam pertemuan itu, KPN, Dato' Bakri Omar berjanji akan menyiasat perkara itu.
Sebelum ini, PAS Terengganu juga berusaha untuk bertemu Ketua Polis Terengganu tetapi tidak mendapat persetujuan bahkan surat permohonan juga tidak berjawab. KAM/ayu/zs

The flight of dozens of Thai Muslims across the Malaysian border has sparked fears here that northern Malaysia may face a major refugee problem as the violence in southern Thailand worsens.Local leaders and villagers in northeastern Kelantan state, where some 131 Thais are being held by authorities after seeking safe haven last week, say they believe many more have sought refuge in predominantly Muslim Malaysia. "I believe many more traumatized people have entered Malaysia. You must be aware that Muslims in southern Thailand have blood ties with the people in Malaysia," Mohamad Zaki Ibrahim, a state assemblyman in Tumpat district, said. "Many of those living in southern Thailand have relatives in Tumpat. I think many may be already staying with their relatives to escape the violence," he told AFP. Rantau Panjang is a small, bustling town just across the border from Sungai Golok where a series of explosions last week, targeting a karaoke bar and two hotels, has rocked business confidence and kept tourists away. Businessmen, traders and taxi drivers complain they are experiencing a sharp drop in economic activity due to the bombings which injured 15 people including a Malaysian tourist. The upsurge in the violence in the Muslim-majority provinces in southern Thailand, where at least 900 people have been killed over the past 20 months, is also believed to have triggered the flight of the 131 Muslim Thais.
Complaints of discrimination
The arrival of the group, which includes women and children, is reviving memories here of Malaysia's last refugee crisis - the wave of Vietnamese asylum-seekers that began in the mid-1970s. "If there is no peace in the southern region, more Muslim Thais are going to come to Malaysia just like the flood of boatpeople from Vietnam," said Mohamad Zaki. The 131 Thai Muslims have reportedly said they feared for their lives, particularly since Thailand introduced an emergency decree in July that gives authorities sweeping powers. They also suspected that the shooting death of a local cleric had been carried out at the hands of the security authorities. The decree, which has been sharply criticised by rights groups, is designed to stem the wave of violence that authorities and analysts say is a volatile mix of Islamic separatism, organised crime and narco-trafficking.
Thailand is a predominantly Buddhist nation but the five southernmost provinces bordering Malaysia, where an insurgency has rumbled on for decades, are home to the bulk of its minority Muslim community. Muslim residents in the south have long complained of discrimination by government policies enacted in Bangkok, and being made to feel they were not equal with other Thai citizens. Malaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar last week urged Thailand to restore confidence and safety in the south, in unusually frank comments between neighbours who normally refrain from commenting on each other's affairs. "We are concerned because we do not want to see the flight of refugees into our country. It is very difficult for us to handle," he said last week. "I think the responsibility is for the Thai side to ensure that they can overcome the fear, whether real or perceived fear, in the local community in Thailand so that they will not come here."
'We will help them'
Syed Mahazar, 38, a local youth leader from Gual Tok Deh, a small village near Sungai Golok, said the community expected more Thais to enter Malaysia if the violence persisted. "I think if more bombs go off, more Thai Muslims will come," he said, adding that if that happened, the villagers were fully prepared to house and feed the refugees with whom they share religion, culture and language. "We are Muslims so we must help them," he said. Pointing to the narrow Sungai Golok river that provides only a flimsy barrier between the two countries, Syed Mahazar said refugees could easily enter Malaysia undetected and then be absorbed into the community. "You just need to jump on one of the small fishing boats and row across the river," he said. The damage to the economy on both sides of the border is painfully obvious. Wan Ding, a 23-year-old driver,
said Malaysian tourists were shying away from Sungai Golok where he lives with his family. "I believe my business will be quiet for at least two weeks," he said as he joined a long queue of motorists waiting to fill their petrol tanks with cheap Malaysian fuel before crossing into Thailand. Zainur Abdullah, a 42-year-old Muslim Thai, who runs a fruit stall at the Rantau Panjang immigration office, is one of many ordinary people trying to get on with their lives amid the fear and bloodshed. "I live in Malaysia but every morning I enter Sungai Golok to buy some vegetables and fruits for my business. My body shivers but what choice do I have," she said.

Artikel yang diterbitkan Jumaat lalu, yang ditulis Setiausaha Antarabangsa DAP, Ronnie Liu itu antara lain mendakwa, sejarah kemerdekaan negara yang dijadikan rujukan di sekolah-sekolah sebagai tidak tepat. Ketua Pemuda Umno Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein berkata Pemuda mahu kepimpinan DAP menjelaskan pendirian mereka
secara rasmi berhubung artikel itu dan mengeluarkan ia daripada lamanweb tersebut, serta mengambil tindakan terhadap penulisnya. "Pemuda menganggap perkara itu serius dan ia adalah satu artikel yang jahat. Menafikan sejarah adalah satu perkara yang tidak boleh dibenarkan sama sekali," katanya kepada pemberita selepas mempengerusikan mesyuarat Exco Pemuda Umno di Ibu pejabat Umno di Kuala Lumpur hari ini. Sambil menyelar pembangkang sebagai hipokrit, Hishammuddin berkata apa yang ditulis itu bukan satu perkara yang kecil, dan ia juga sangat jelas membuktikan bahawa mereka cuba memperlekehkan pemimpin negara serta menidakkan pengorbanan pemimpin terdahulu terhadap kemerdekaan negara. "Saya rasa adalah tidak kena bagi kita untuk memberi pengiktirafan kepada PKM. Ia salah sama sekali. Cuba fikirkan tentang mangsa PKM dan ribuan orang yang dibunuh mereka," katanya. Menurut laporan Bernama, Wee berkata, negara memperolehi kemerdekaan menerusi usaha pakatan tiga parti utama iaitu Umno, MCA dan MIC yang membentuk pentadbiran bersama. "Saya ingin ingatkan Ronnie bahawa kerakyatan beliau serta hak beliau untuk menyertai politik di negara ini adalah disebabkan oleh usaha yang dijalankan oleh pengasas kita, yang
juga merupakan pemimpin politik Umno, MCA dan MIC ketika itu," katanya.

Many mosques and Islamic centers in the Netherlands have been attacked.
THE HAGUE , September 5, 2005 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) Three Dutch mosques launched a "code of conduct" Monday, September 5, to help fight what they termed as "radicalism", promote democratic values and encourage imams to speak Dutch in return for tougher action on discrimination against Muslims, on the part of government.
Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende witnessed the signing of the code, which came in response to a "social contract" signed between the Dutch authorities and mosques after violence erupted, mostly against the country's Muslim minority, following the murder of controversial film-maker Theo Van Gogh at the hands of a Muslim young man in November 2004, reported Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The code seeks to specify how mosques detect "radical elements" in their congregations, counter extreme interpretations of Islamic texts and even report suspected extremists to police.
Under the code, imams will receive Dutch-language classes and training in how to recognize "radical behavior" and are required to be particularly vigilant about how they teach "certain verses" of the noble Qur'an.
In return, the local council will create an office to raise the status of Muslims and counter discrimination against them.
Mosques that sign up will consult with the family of any potential extremist and offer support and advice, but if such a discussion does not lead to a change in behavior, the mosque pledges to report the person to the Dutch authorities, according to Reuters.
Reservations
The Aya Sofya mosque, controlled by the Turkish immigrant community, is one of three Amsterdam mosques involved in drawing up the code in partnership with local authorities in Baarsjes, a district with a large immigrant population.
The other two mosques belonged mainly to Moroccans and Pakistanis, but only the Turkish mosque signed the agreement Monday.
"The Pakistani and Moroccan mosques said they were above all places of worship which cannot play such a leading social role nor are equipped for it," city hall director Henk van Waveren told AFP.
"We don't agree with them, but the debate continues within the community," he added.
But an official from the Aya Sofya mosque said the clause requiring followers to report suspicious behavior to police was difficult for them to accept.
"To accept warning the authorities about influential radical behavior was the subject of difficult discussions," Fatih Dag told AFP. "But this is what everybody must do when there's a threat."

The Dutch Prime Minister said he hoped other mosques would also adopt the code.
"We need others to say 'no' to unacceptable behavior. This protocol is modern way to attack the problems and I hope this example will be followed," Balkenende said, according to AFP.
"We live together in the Netherlands and this country belongs to all -- Muslims, Christians, humanists, atheists -- but that is possibly only with respect for democratic laws. The Netherlands is tolerant, but tolerance cannot stand alone," he said.
Dag told Reuters that Muslims who promoted democracy ran the risk of becoming the targets of radicals like Mohammed Bouyeri, the man jailed for life in July for killing Van Gogh.
"We are also threatened by terrorism just like every other Dutch citizen," he said.
"Fighting radicalization must be a project of the whole society in which everybody has their responsibility."
While Dutch authorities have expelled three imams from the southeastern city of Eindhoven, several imams have called on Muslims not to protect any possible members of the "radical" Islamic network known as the Hofstad group, suspected of planning attacks in the country, according to AFP.
Bouyeri, who was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole in June 2005, was allegedly a member of the group.
An imam in the southern city of Tilburg denounced Hofstad members as "apostates" who did not follow true Islam, according to the Dutch newspaper Het Parool.
Another imam in The Hague issued a fatwa authorizing Muslims to testify against alleged extremists.
Dozens of mosques and Muslim schools were attacked in the weeks after the Van Gogh murder in a country that is home to almost 1 million Muslims or about 6 percent of the population.

Anggota Parlimen Rantau Panjang, Haji Abdul Fatah Haron berkata, penggunaan kaedah rawatan itu mungkin tidak berupaya membantu kerajaan bagi menyelesaikan masalah dadah.
Biar pun kerajaan mendakwa boleh menjimatkan kos, namun dari aspek lain ia boleh menularkan lagi gejala penagihan dadah, katanya ketika merasmikan Forum Menangani Gejala Dadah dan Aids anjuran Urusetia Penerangan Kerajaan Negeri Kelantan, di sini, baru-baru ini.
Pogram perintis bagi pembekalan jarum dan kondom percuma kepada penagih dadah dijangka bermula awal Januari depan. Forum berkenaan menampilkan ahli panel Penolong Pengarah Agensi Anti Dadah Kebangsaan, Ibrahim Abdul Ghani, Ketua Pengelola Halaqat Kelantan, Ustaz Muhamad Mustafa dan dipengerusikan Setiausaha Agung I-Grad, Zamakhari Muhamad.
Ibrahim berkata, masalah sosial dan jenayah yang semakin parah hari ini kebanyakannya berpunca daripada penagihan dadah.
Tambah beliau, mengikut statistik ADK jumlah penagih di seluruh negara sejak tahun 1988 hingga pertengahan 2005 seramai 282,472 orang atau 1.1 peratus daripada keseluruhan rakyat Malaysia.
Walau bagaimana pun angka sebenar yang tiada dalam rekod adalah jauh lebih besar sebenarnya, ujarnya. Kata beliau biar pun pelbagai kempen kesedaran dilakukan, ia masih gagal untuk mengurangkan secara drastik jumlah penagih dadah di seluruh negara.
Tambah beliau, punca utama berlakunya penagihan dadah ialah kurangnya pendidikan agama dalam diri remaja, di mana ia dibuktikan melalui kaji selidik yang dibuat ke atas penagih di Pusat Serenti.
Malah katanya, ada di antara mereka yang tidak tahu mengucap syahadah, tidak pandai sembahyang, tidak boleh membaca al-Fatihah dan asas ibadat yang lain.
Muhamad berkata, masalah dadah dan Aids tidak akan dapat diselesaikan selagi manusia tidak mempedulikan ajaran agama atau tidak menjadikan Islam sebagai panduan menguruskan kehidupan.
Katanya, selagi syariat Allah tidak mahu dirujuk dan dilaksanakan dalam menguruskan manusia, selagi itulah masalah penagihan dadah tidak dapat diatasi.
Turut hadir Pengarah Urusetia Penerangan Kerajaan Negeri Kelantan, Abdul Rahman Yunus. Forum berkenaan juga diserikan dengan persembahan sajak bertajuk Suntikan Maut oleh Smasiah Chuyu Otoma dan persembahan pentomin bertajuk Tak Dok Penyakit Cari penyakit oleh kakitangan urusetia.

The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) has incurred the wrath of some thirty major non-governmental groups in the country over an invitation it has forwarded to former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad to address a human rights conference scheduled for this Friday in Kuala Lumpur.Human rights NGO Suaram, in an open protest letter endorsed by 29 other outfits, said the conference could not gain any credibility if it featured a leader who perpetrated extensive human rights violations during his 22-year political reign. Given that Malaysia has now been independent for 48 years, the government of the day must bear full responsibility for every human rights violation perpetrated by the state. The Mahathir-led government inflicted some very serious harm to human rights in Malaysia. We have not recovered
from its effects, the protest letter - a copy of which was hand-delivered to Suhakam this morning - read. A Suhakam spokesperson confirmed the letters receipt and informed malaysiakini that it had been passed to Dr Chiam Heng Keng, who is one of its commissioners. The commission had no further comment on the issue. The letter, endorsed by NGOs such as Aliran, Fomca, Sisters in Islam and Tenaganita, also listed Mahathirs alleged abuses and violations. This list, which is by no means exhaustive, is a good reminder of what the Mahathir-led administration has not been made accountable for, said the NGOs in the document. Brand of ethnocide Among the allegations levied against Mahathir was the use of the Internal Security Act (ISA) to silence dissidents - particularly during the infamous Operation Lalang in 1987 - by arbitrarily arresting and detaining them without trial. More
than a hundred innocent peace-loving Malaysians were arrested and detained without trail and (their) allegations of torture have never been investigated, stated the letter. Mahathir, who is now adviser to national corporations Proton and Petronas, was said to have also orchestrated a Machiavellian assault on the judiciary to suppress an uprising against him in Umno of which he was president. The attorney-general and accessory to the assault on the judiciary, during that time, happens to be the present Suhakam chairperson Abu Talib Othman. He was personally appointed by Mahathir into both positions, said the groups. The Bakun Hydro-Dam project in Sarawak - which displaced 10,000 indigenous people - was used as another example of the ex-premiers abuse of human rights. The organisations called on Mahathir to bear
responsibility for what they described was a brand of ethnocide created by the Bakun Dam project with its displacement effect. The sacking and subsequent jailing of Mahathirs former deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim was also placed on the list. The lack of an apology by the ex-premier to his now-released ex-right hand man was also highlighted by the groups. Three to boycott meet Suaram, Hakam and Aliran also said they have informed Suhakam that they would not be attending Fridays Human Rights and Globalisation conference. (We) will not be attending the conference this year as we are of the opinion that the invitation to Mahathir was extended without regard to (his) long and tainted record of suppressing human rights and fundamental liberties in Malaysia, said S Arutchelvan when contacted.
The programme coordinator for Suaram, speaking on behalf of the three NGOs, said he had sent the withdrawal letters to Suhakam chairperson Abu Talib Othman. The annual conference is also being held to mark Suhakams sixth anniversary, having been established on the same date in 1999. Mahathir will be delivering a special address on globalisation. Two professors from Thailand and the UK, a former United Nations permanent representative from Malaysia and a director-general of a regional counter-terrorism group, are also lined up to speak at the event.
This is the second time local NGOs are boycotting Suhakam. In April 2002, a total of 32 NGOs suspended all engagements with the commission for 100 days beginning April 24 following the new appointments of commissioners, including the naming of Abu Talib Othman as the new chairperson. The boycott was also initiated to protest the governments poor response to Suhakams numerous recommendations in its maiden report and its freedom of assembly report, thus creating the impression that Suhakam is nothing but a mere public relations tool.

Malaysia today said it was concerned about the recent flight of Thai Muslims over the border, and that Thailand should ensure the safety of its citizens in the troubled south to prevent more from coming.
"We are concerned because we do not want to see the flight of refugees into our country. It is very difficult for us to handle," Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar told reporters.
"I think the responsibility is for the Thai side to ensure that they can overcome the fear, whether real or perceived fear, in the local community in Thailand so that they will not come here," he said.
Some 131 Thai Muslims crossed over into Malaysia's northeastern Kelantan state on Tuesday and took refuge in several mosques, saying that they feared for their safety in their country, where a Muslim insurgency is raging.
In unusually frank statements between neighbours who normally do not comment on each other's internal affairs, Syed Hamid said there was "no denying that the situation in Thailand is still not safe, it is still not stable".
"If their safety and security is assured then I think the question of them coming to Malaysia will not arise," he said.
Syed Hamid said he had spoken to his Thai counterpart Kantathi Suphamongkhon about reports of extrajudicial killings by Thailand's army in the south, which is now operating under an emergency decree.
"I have spoken twice to the Thai foreign minister and I think he has told me there is no truth. I'll be trying to get reports on our own to see what exactly is happening," he said.
Innocent civilians
The minister said that Malaysia was allowing the group of 131 Thais to stay in the country pending investigations over their status and their reasons for crossing over the border.
"The initial report that we have seems to suggest that they fear for their lives and that they have decided to come to this side, even though my colleague in Thailand has denied that they will be harmed," he said.
"The Thai side has asked us whether we can send them back, so we will look into it. We just cannot chase people away, we have to look into it," he said.
Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said Friday that some of the 131 displaced people were Islamic militants who were trying to "internationalise" the unrest by crossing into Malaysia.
However, Kantathi apparently contradicted the prime minister by saying that the Thai Muslims were innocent civilians acting on rumours spread in the region, where almost 900 people have been killed in the past 20 months.

Malaysian police have said that the displaced people, including women and children, insisted they were escaping the violence in the troubled region where almost 900 people have been killed in the past 20 months.
But Thaksin said that at least some of them were linked to the insurgency raging in the southern provinces bordering mainly-Muslim Malaysia.
"Some of them are militants in disguise. They are trying every possible way to internationalise the unrest issue but we and the Malaysian government are cooperating closely and there is no problem," he said.
However, Thai Foreign Minister Khantathi Suphamongkhon apparently contradicted the prime minister by saying that the displaced people were innocent civilians.
"As far as I know those who fled into Malaysia are innocent. They heard rumours which are not in line with the facts, and may have been spread by a certain group of people," he said, without elaborating.
Kantathi said that the 131 Thais, who did not have any travel documents and are being dealt with by Malaysian immigration authorities, would be brought back to Thailand.
Malaysia's Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar said Thursday that the country was prepared to provide temporary shelter to the Thai illegals if the situation continued to be unstable, but would not recognise them as asylum-seekers.
Thaksin said that the government would act to halt any repeat of the wave of bombings that rocked the region in the past few days, with about 20 blasts that killed one policeman and 21 others injured.
"This is their retaliation in response to arrest warrants being issued for their key members -- we have to work harder," he told reporters.
Thaksin urged mobile phone operators to introduce new technology to prevent bombs being detonated by mobile phones, saying he wanted it to be in place within two months.
"The situation is worsening, so we have to work on this technical issue," he said, complaining that some operators were "reluctant" to invest in the system that would operate in the three worst-hit provinces.

Considered a close friend by many top GAM (Free Aceh Movement) leaders, Ramasamy was often consulted for his views in the years leading to the peace negotiations. The academic was at the first rounds of the talks in January as an observer. And according to him, this resulted in his controversial sacking by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia last
month. Apparently Indonesia protested to Wisma Putra (Malaysias Foreign Ministry) about that. Otherwise I dont see why Malaysia should be concerned about it. Im not the official advisor of GAM, he told malaysiakini in a recent interview. Of course, GAM came to see me and a lot of other people also came for advice. That did not mean I was their official advisor. Elsewhere, Ramasamys contribution to bringing peace to Aceh would have been recognised. Some people came to me and said, Prof, in some countries you could have been given an award, he said. I contributed in some meaningful ways (to the peace process). They have a peace agreement now. Malaysia should be happy. At least, we can send home 40,000 Acehnese who are here. Instead, his academic contract was abruptly terminated early last month. Since Ramasamy retired at the age of 56 in March, he was given an unusual month-to-month contract to continue
lecturing at the university until 2007. Ramasamy spent his final day at UKM last Thursday. The shock termination had left many of his students in the lurch, including 12 PhD students who were under his supervision. Labour rights champion The political science professor, who had been with the university for a quarter of a century, started out as a campaigner for labour rights. He dedicated his time, when not teaching, to championing the rights of workers in plantations and the Felda scheme. It was later that he developed an interest in the national liberation struggles around the world, especially the Tamil Tigers who are fighting for independence in northeast Sri Lanka. In the course of his research, he had visited Tigers occupied territories in the northeast and even met with their legendary and shadowy leader, Velupillai Prabakaran. Until last week, a photo of Ramasamy and Prabakaran sat on his desk in the professors office at UKMs Centre for History, Political Science and Strategic Studies. Prabakaran was so impressed with Ramasamy that he was the only non-Sri Lankan appointed to sit in the rebels Constitutional Affairs Committee to help draft a proposal for an interim administration in Sri Lanka's northeast in 2003. Not surprisingly, Ramasamy is considered a world-renowned expert on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). His interest in another national liberation movement, this time closer to home - the independence struggle of the Acehnese - came much later. There were number of Acehnese students at the university who worked with me, and I talked to them, listened to them. I was very sympathetic with their cause. He subsequently helped to organise seminars for
the students who had fled Aceh when martial law was imposed by Jakarta in 2002. We discussed about Aceh, Indonesia, Papua and I would give them information on how they (LTTE) were trying to resolve their problem. It was a fantastic exchange of opinions in a very sterile atmosphere in the university. Self-governance in Aceh He was later introduced to top GAM leaders, some of whom are living in Malaysia, while others were in Sweden, including the rebels' self-styled prime minister and chief negotiator Malik Mahmud (photo, left). When the peace negotiations - brokered by Finland-based mediator Crisis Management Initiative - were mooted, GAM leaders sought Ramasamys opinions, especially given his experience with the peace process in Sri Lanka. They (Acehnese) reject the special autonomy
offer but they will go for the self-government of Wilayah Aceh. Independence is something integral and essential to them. They have talked about independence for 30 years. It doesnt matter, said Ramasamy. You can go for a deal with some dignity intact, some international support, and at the same time they are able to control their natural resources, allow for Indonesia to withdraw and also for European Union participation. Eventually GAM signed a historic peace deal with Jakarta by dropping its long-held demands for independence, putting an end to a brutal war which claimed 16,000 lives.Indonesia in turn promised an amnesty for all political prisoners, to allow the creation of local political parties in the province and to withdraw its security forces by the end of the year. Yet others achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them - William Shakespeare In a matter of a month, Malaysias most celebrated cause celebre has gone from being a virtual political outcast to folk hero. Released from jail a year ago, the speed at which former deputy premier Anwar Ibrahims rehabilitation is taking place is almost breathtaking. Since then, he has received an apology from ex-police chief Rahim Noor for the injuries he suffered while in custody - symbolised internationally by the infamous black eye. And only last week, he turned the tables on the author of the infamous book chronicling his character defects, which not only earned him his vindication but also made him richer by a few million ringgit. Anwar, therefore has returned or is at least returning! And who
can blame him whenever he smiles thinking about this? With destiny now on his side, is it any wonder if he chooses to declare his aspirations to be prime minister one day? Is it also any wonder that this whole episode is placing him straight in the mould of Shakespeares dictum - that the events beginning from September 1998 onwards is somewhat taking him to the path of greatness - by default? Maybe yes, may be not But what does not need reassuring is that these are, indeed, interesting times in Malaysias history. And rather, ironically, if anybody had missed a parallel, Anwars comeback bears an uncanny resemblance to what his own nemesis, Dr Mahathir Mohamad himself went through decades ago. Castigated and banished into the political wilderness for his strident views
stemming partly from his book titled, The Malay Dilemma, the former premier uncovered the very same path to stardom that his once deputy is now discovering. So it is indeed interesting, to know that ones food cannot after all be another mans poison. Food, is food all the same. Now that both Anwar and Mahathir have eaten from the same political plates metaphorically said, nothing beats saying that the man Mahathir wanted rid off, has risen from his political grave. And how that has been gaining currency is evidenced by the innumerable times he has been courted by local and the foreign media for commentaries. So he is Malaysias comeback kid to what former US president, Bill Clinton was to his people. Moral dimension And like the greatness he is seeking through his relentless campaign of redress, what is unmistakable is the moral dimension of his return. By reversing history
and rewriting the way it accurately reflects reality, Anwar is the person to watch from now onwards. Be on the lookout for the strategies he is deploying to win back what he must have privately mused as being robbed off the premiership. And by giving every one of his actions a moral stamp, he is also doing what Clinton did 13 years ago, over the moral quandary triggered by the Vietnam War. Instead of serving in it, the former president avoided conscription citing the wars illegitimacy which history later vindicated. And what happened next, as they used to say, was history. History by the election of a one-time draft dodger to his nations highest office. So it is probably the same with Anwar. From the high pedestal of deputy premiership to the dungeons of Bukit Aman, Anwar is more than a cause celebre. He is a political force, clearly for the
present and the future. The court rulings and apologies have corroborated that he is a proven victim of injustice. Apart from the moral victories he is securing apace, the battles he is waging can be akin to what Malaysias famous general of the anti communist insurgency, General Gerald Templar, did, winning the hearts and minds of his people. That he is steadily on his way back to stardom bears scrutiny to yet another of Shakespeares verses, "They say best men are moulded out of faults and for most, become much more the better for being a little bad." That should aptly describe Anwar as he now is or appropriately his mood. More wronged than being wrong, the present climate of slow and steady vindication cannot make him any better for the faults and escapades he once stood wrongly accused of.

The author of a book which helped trigger the 1998 sacking of former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim died Monday of diabetes, the official Bernama news agency said.
Bernama said Khalid Jafri, 65, would be buried Tuesday in the town of Port Dickson. He leaves a wife and four children.
Khalid, the author of "50 Reasons Why Anwar Cannot Be PM", had been sentenced in July to one year in jail for accusing Anwar of sodomy, corruption and an extra-marital affair that resulted in an illegitimate daughter.
Khalid was free on bail pending an appeal. However, early this month he was admitted to hospital for treatment for diabetes.

More companies are helping employees cut out-of-pocket fuel expenses through telecommuting programs.
A campaign in Atlanta pays commuters $3 a day for three months if they switch to "clean commutes," such as bicycles and van pools.
The car-sharing companies that are springing up offer a significant number of gas-sipping hybrids.
The owner of some Milwaukee gasoline stations is giving a discount to cabdrivers who buy his brand of gas.
Yes, Americans, even with their long love affair with the SUV, are also starting to look for ways to cut down on gasoline expenses that are hitting as high as $500 a month.
"We are on the cusp of change," says Mark Routt, a senior consultant at Energy Security Analysis Inc. in Wakefield, Mass. "Looking back over the last year, Americans have had a taste of higher oil prices that have only gone up, and now they are starting to dial in lifestyle changes."
Indeed, the catalyst to this newfound interest in conservation is the soaring price of oil, which was close to a record $67 a barrel on the futures exchange Monday.
With two more weeks in the summer driving season, regular unleaded is now $2.55 a gallon nationally, according to GasPriceWatch.com.
Americans say the prices are strapping them financially. On Friday, an Associated Press-AOL poll of 1,000 adults found that 64 percent say gas prices will cause them money problems in the next six months.
According to an analysis by Mark Wolfe, director of the National Energy Assistance Directors' Association, gas prices will cost a family with two cars $533 more this year than last - $917 more than two years ago.
"For people who are low income, this is like your entire salary increase goes to energy and for those on fixed income, it's even worse," says Mr. Wolfe.
At least according to anecdotal evidence, the price spike has Americans investigating ways to cut down on their bills.
In Milwaukee, Andy Khullar, who owns 18 gasoline/convenience stores, is giving a discount to a large taxi fleet when the drivers buy his brand of gas. "Everyone is watching their pennies," Mr. Khullar says.
Some motorists are opting for car- sharing companies, which offer members a fleet of cars that can be reserved on an hourly or daily basis. One such company is Seattle-based Flexcar. Its flat fee includes, among other things, gas, which isn't as big of a cost to the company as some might think: Sixty percent of the Flexcar fleet are hybrids.
"Business is good for us," says Lance Ayrault, Flexcar CEO. "I don't know if we can directly attribute it to spiking gas [prices]. Certainly as gas approaches record highs, we get a lot of inquiries."
Another approach is evident in San Ramon, Calif., where the Bishop Ranch Business Park is throwing every inducement managers can think of at commuters so they won't drive to work solo. Almost 30,000 commuters clock into one of the 350 companies in the business park. But with the incentives funded by the park's developer and Chevron Corp., 30 percent of employees don't drive to work by themselves.
Van-poolers, for instance, get half of their van-pool fees rebated after committing to the service for three months, according to Marci McGuire, transportation manager for the Bishop Ranch transportation center.
On top of that, free buses shuttle workers 55 times a day from Bay Area Rapid Transit stops to Bishop Ranch and back. And if an emergency calls an employee away, he or she can take advantage of six free taxi rides. "Only about 2 to 3 percent of people use that service per year. But it's the biggest objection people have to giving up their car," says Ms. McGuire. "They say, 'I have children in school. I have to drive!' "
Those who take the plunge into car- and van-pools often find it worthwhile. That's the case of Kellie Prince Anglin, who works for Fiserv, an Atlanta financial services firm. She estimates that she used to pay $500 a month for gas for her Dodge Durango.
But in three months of van-pooling, Ms. Anglin estimates that her monthly gas expenses plummeted to $170. She also enjoys the increased free time in the morning. "I have a laptop with a wireless card, and I find myself working some on the way in. We even play Trivial Pursuit in the van one or two times a week," she says.
Both Fiserv and the local Clean Air Campaign pay 20 percent of the van-pool fee.
For yet others, the campaign contributes the sum of $3 a day for a "clean commute."
Still other companies are trying to help employees cut gasoline expenses by participating in telecommuting programs. In the Atlanta area, such companies as Georgia Power, General Electric Energy, and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta are allowing employees to work at home.

Assalamu'alaykum sahabat semua..
 
Apa pendapat 'alim ulamak & umat Islam di Malaysia khususnya.. jika diadakan solat hajat untuk menyelesaikan masalah jerebu ini. Jika perlu ikhtiar, solat hajat hujan.
 
Kalau mengikut laporan akhbar, pihak Indonesia sendiri melihat perkembangan kebakaran di Indonesia akan berterusan beberapa minggu. Bayangkan baru seminggu kita sudah mencapai API 500 (Port Klang).. dan kawasan lain juga nampaknya sudah melepasi tahap bahaya API 300.
 
Apakah tindakan kerajaan dalam menyelesaikan masalah ini juga dalam menangani lumpuhnya ekonomi negara? Di harap pihak kerajaan dan yang berwajib dapat memberi panduan kepada  rakyat mengenai tindakan yang harus dilakukan dalam masa terdekat ini jika keadaan yang tidak mengizinkan untuk kita berada diluar, selain duduk di dalam rumah.

Air quality in Kuala Selangor and Port Klang "very unhealthy"

PETALING JAYA: As of 11am, hazardous air quality levels have been recorded at 51 Department of Environment (DOE) monitoring stations.  
The API reading at Kuala Selangor was "very unhealthy" at 531 while Port Klang recorded an equally highly hazardous level of 529.  
Meanwhile, visibility in Sepang and Petaling Jaya were between 500m and 1km, whereas in Subang, Temerloh and Malacca, it was between 1.3km and 1.7km.  
Other areas like Kuala Krai, Setiawan, Kuching and Bintulu recorded visibility readings of between 3 and 5km.

As the haze envelopes the Klang Valley, concerns over its economic impact have led to cautious investors trimming their positions in the stock market.  
As a result, the Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) yesterday fell nine points to the day's low before partially recovering in the final half hour of trading to close at 939, down five points.  
The first to bear the economic impact of the haze was Northport (M) Bhd, which said yesterday that port operations had been suspended due to hazardous environmental conditions and poor visibility, and would resume once the situation improved.  




 Northport, with operations in Port Klang, the worst affected area, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of NCB Holdings Bhd. NCB shares eased five sen to RM2.50.  
The suspension of operations at the port could temporarily affect imports or exports of manufacturers and food wholesalers. It could also cause inconvenience to logistics companies that move these goods or produce.  
At the same time, Subang airport just outside Kuala Lumpur announced it was closed till conditions improved. Meanwhile, the authorities are closely monitoring visibility at the KL International Airport.  
Not surprisingly, these conditions cast a pall over Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd

MalaysiakiniSecara perbandingan, harga minyak di Malaysia lebih murah daripada kebanyakan negara Asean. Malah, ia adalah antara terendah di dunia. Satu daripada kesan negatif (subsidi) ialah berlakunya herotan pasaran yang boleh menjejaskan ekonomi negara. Ini bermakna harga komoditi itu tidak menggambarkan kos sebenar. Ini kerana harga pasaran adalah di bawah harga sebenar. Akibatnya, akan berlaku penggunaan yang berlebihan dan pembaziran. Di samping itu, akan timbul kegiatan yang tidak sihat seperti penyelewengan, penipuan dan penyeludupan. Pada hari ini, subsidi juga menguntungkan orang kaya yang memiliki banyak kereta berbanding orang miskin yang mempunyai motosikal. Ini tidak adil. Lebih baik jika wang yang digunakan untuk subsidi ini dipakai untuk tujuan lain yang lebih menguntungkan rakyat jelata. (Dipetik dari Berita Harian Isnin 1 Ogos
2005). Kabinet hari ini mengarahkan semua kementerian mengemukakan cadangan dan pandangan mengenai langkah jangka panjang penjimatan tenaga bagi mengurangkan pergantungan terhadap elektrik dan minyak.

Dan akan sampai ketikanya nanti apabila harga ini juga akan terus melambung tinggi.Untuk pertama kalinya, media arus perdana dalam negara kita telah cuba memberitahu tentang ketidak seimbangan pengeluaran dan permintaan bahan bakar minyak mentah. Ini terpaksa dilakukan kerana kerajaan ingin mengolah persetujuan orang ramai yang pasti akan menghadapai bahang kenaikkan harga bahan bakar petrol. Data-data yang dipaparkan
oleh media walaupun tidak lengkap tetapi adalah tepat. Saya tidak akan mempertikaikan tentang statistik dan data. Seperti biasa orang ramai akan diberi candu tentang bagaimana harga minyak di negara kita adalah yang termurah berbanding di Jerman, Sweden atau Britain. Fakta ini memang betul dan tepat. Tetapi tidak pula dinyatakan bahawa gaji minima memburuh di negara-negara ini melintasi RM200 sehari. Ini juga tidak akan saya pertikaikan. Saya merasa marah kerana masih ada lagi satu fakta yang terus ingin disorok dari pengetahuan orang ramai. Fakta yang ingin diselindungi ialah tentang kekeringan bahan bakar minyak petroleum. Fakta minyak semakin kering ini sebenarnya adalah punca utama yang memaksa kenaikan harga. Pergolakan politik, perang, cuaca dan spekulasi pasaran hanya rempah-ratus dalam hal jual-beli minyak. Rempah ratus ini hanya membantu fakta utama di mana
negara pengeluar bahan mentah ini tidak lagi memiliki telaga minyak yang melimpah ruah. Memadamkan lampu atau mengurangkan suhu alat hawa dingin ini bukan jawapan untuk berjimat-cermat. Malah, tutup pasang tutup pasang akan membawa kemudaratan kepada alat-alat ini. Sebenarnya, berapa sen sangat yang dapat dijimatkan dengan nasihat tutup-pasang-tutup-pasang ini. Pembakaran minyak yang paling membazir bukan kerana lampu di rumah, di pejabat atau alat hawa dingin. Pembaziran petrol yang terbesar ialah penggunaan kereta persendirian. Kereta persendirian ialah alat pengangkutan yang paling tidak ekonomik. Satu keluarga sebuah kereta adalah dasar salah yang telah dikembangkan oleh budaya konsumer kapitalis. Di era awalan penemuan minyak dan kemunculan teknoloji enjin, mungkin kereta adalah satu-satunya alat pengangkutan. Ketika itu, minyak senang ditemui dan kereta belum banyak. Hari ini, budaya kereta persendiran telah menjadi musuh utama umat manusia. Ianya

They came from across the country to air their grouses and problems. But the 1,000 odd Orang Asli left disappointed when Rural and Regional Development Minister Abdul Aziz Shamsuddin failed to show-up.
Abdul Aziz had been slated to officiate the 15th annual general assembly of the Peninsular Malaysia Orang Asli Association (POASM) in Putrajaya yesterday. We are very disappointed. Government officials have always been talking and talking, but are never brave enough to be up front with the Orang Asli community, said past POASM deputy-president Arif Embing when met. Meanwhile, vice-president Melati Jamil expressed her disappointment in having let down the members who had traveled far to have an audience with the minister. We didn't pay for their transportation costs. When they were told that the minister would officiate this AGM, they came by paying their own bus fares and other transportation costs, she said. Malaysiakini learnt there was a death in the minister's family but he was expected to return to Kuala Lumpur
the same morning. Change mindsetEarlier, in a speech read out by his political secretary, Abul Aziz said the government was committed to protect the interests of the Orang Asli. For us, this is a responsibility that has to be carried out... we are highly committed to realise the aspirations of the government in ensuring the community share in the plans for development, he said. The onus in realising such plans, he added, laid with the Orang Asli community as the government had provided sufficient facilities and amenities to facilitate their development. As such, POASM is responsible to help the government in increasing the awareness and changing the mindset among the Orang Asli to accept development. This is among the areas that we need to focus on while, at the same time, seeking physical development such as housing, roads, water and electricity, he said. On the alarming rate of
Orang Asli children dropping out of school before reaching secondary level, the minister said there were 25,354 pupils registered at the primary level but only 7,559 were registered in secondary schools. Does it have to do with inadequate facilities or a mindset that still does not stress on the importance of education? he asked. Abdul Aziz also argued that the success of about 500 Orang Asli who had reached or completed tertiary education, with some acquiring PhDs, meant that others were just as capable. Addressing the question as to why there was only one Orang Asli holding a management position in the Department of Orang Asli Affairs, he said this was not because the government was intentionally not according high positions to them. Admittedly, there area many Orang Asli who have succeeded in graduating from institutions of higher learning. (But) those who had completed their studies ventured into other fields such as lecturing or engineering
(instead of applying to the department), he said. The crux of it is, they must be interested in building and developing their communities themselves, he added. On the economic front, Abdul Aziz lamented the fact that 76 percent of the 29,873 Orang Asli households are categorised as poor, but promised that the ministry was in the midst of floating a proposal to the state governments involving the distribution of land to them. At the same time, he added that the Orang Asli should be encouraged to seek additional sources of livelihoods to supplement their meager income and to break out of the cycle of poverty. However, the speech failed to make up for his absence and the messages fell on cynical ears. Raised many timesPOASM past president 'Bah' Anthony Williams-Hunt said Abdul Aziz's absence was in
line generally with the government's general indifference to the plight of the Orang Asli community. Frankly speaking, I'm not disappointed. It was in a way expected, he added. Questioning the minister for blaming the Orang Asli for their socio-economic conditions, Tony noted that many proposals for the betterment of the community had long been presented to the authorities nothing has happened. It simply defies logic that we would be opposed to development as he implies. What 'mindset' are they trying to change? The land issue, for example, has been highlightded for many years and we have proposed many solutions (but these have been ignored), he said. On Orang Asli children dropping out from school, Tony said a comprehensive study should be done on the factors contributing to the large drop-out rate instead of lumping it simplistically and conveniently on parents. Api marak dengan dasyat sekali seolah-olah seluruh Masjidil Aqsa akan musnah ketika itu. Malah, pihak bomba juga tidak hadir menghulur bantuan. Tetapi Allah telah menyelamatkan Masjid Al-Aqsa dan melindunginya. Akhirnya api dapat dipadamkan.

Setelah itu orang-orang Yahudi membuat pengadilan pura-pura terhadap Dennis Michael. Michael mendakwa bahawa dia diutus Allah untuk melakukan pembakaran itu sesuai dengan berita dari Kitab Zakaria. Kemudian, Yahudi membebaskannya dengan mengatakan Michael gila. Maka, atas sebab itu, Michael tidak dapat dipertanggungjawabkan atas kejadian tersebut. Negeri-negeri Muslim seluruh dunia bangkit mempertahankan tempat suci mereka dan mengecam perbuatan keji terhadap Al-Aqsa. Maka sejak itu 21 Ogos setiap tahun menjadi Hari Al-Quds sedunia.

Episod duka Palestin ini, ditambah dengan penindasan dan kezaliman yang tidak henti hingga ke saat ini hakikatnya menuntut sokongan dan bantuan kita, seluruh lapisan Ummahpemilik tanah Palestin yang sah. Malah, 21 Ogos hadir setiap tahun mengingatkan kita bahawa sekiranya kita tidak mempertahankan tanah suci Palestin dan Masjidil Aqsa, kelak, kita bukan sahaja tidak dapat mempertahankannya daripada sekadar dibakar, malah dirampas terus keseluruhannya secara haram oleh Zionis Yahudi.

Justeru, bersempena Sambutan Memperingati Hari Al-Quds Sedunia tahun ini, adalah amat wajar untuk kita sama-sama mengajak masyarakat sekeliling memperingatinya, apatah lagi merencana langkah strategik, efektif dan praktikal yang boleh dilakukan dengan mengoptimakan kemahiran dan sumber yang ada demi menyumbang ke arah pembebasan Palestin. Semoga usaha kerdil kita demi mewujudkan keadilan dan keamanan di bumi Palestin diberkatiNya. Islami Ya Quds!

Muslims Mourn Late Sheikh Deedat

Deedat was a self-educated caller to Islam.

DURBAN, South Africa, August 8, 2005 (IslamOnline.net) - Hundreds of people are expected to attend the funeral of South African caller to Islam Sheikh Ahmed Deedat, who passed away in the early hours Monday, August 8.
Sheikh Deedat, 87, passed away at his home in Trevennen Road, Verulam in the province of KwaZulu Natal at 7 a.m.
His son Yusuf told IOL that the cause of his death was heart failure.
The family was not in a state of shock, said Yusuf. As Muslims we believe that every soul shall taste death.
He added that the last moments of his fathers life were peaceful, and coincided with the commencement of a recitation of "Surah Yaseen" on an Islamic radio station.
Channel Islam had just introduced and begun to play Surah Yaseen when the throes of death began, he explained. My father just looked at us and then passed away.
Funeral
Sheikh Deedat will be buried in the Verulam cemetery after Salaatul-Maghrib (Maghreb prayers) Monday.
Hundreds of people from around the country are expected to participate in his funeral prayer, and his family says that people from across the world, such as India, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have been calling to convey their condolences.
His death comes as a shock to us, Maulana Ahmed Kathrada, of the Jamiatul Ulama (Scholars' Group), a local theological body, told IOL.
He added that Sheikh Deedat had served not only South Africans, but the Muslim Ummah at large, for many years.
We pray that Allah Grants him a lofty position in Jannah (Paradise), and that He Grants his family patience, especially his wife who has endured so much during the last few years.
Dedicated Wife

He was bed-ridden for almost a decade.
Mrs Hawa Deedat, who had spent the last nine years nursing her husband and administering his daily injections, was present at her husbands side at the time of his death, and she is well, said Yusuf.
She is the wife of a soldier, and can therefore only be a soldier herself."
Several other religious leaders and political figures expressed their sadness at the news of Sheikh Deedats death.
Mr. Ashwin Trikamjee, president of the South African Hindu Maha Sabha, said that Sheikh Deedat would be missed by Muslims worldwide and the greater South African Muslim community.
I think that the Islamic community has lost a great man, who was totally committed to the cause of Islam, he said.
Mr. Trikamjee said that Sheikh Deedat had made a huge impact on constructive religious debate.
Mr Riaz Jamal, a director of the Al-Ansaar Foundation in Durban, South Africa, who had done a thesis on Sheikh Deedat as part of his Masters in Islamic Studies, said that there was a need for the Muslim and Christian worlds to continue to bring audiences together for religious debate and dialogue.
Sheikh Ahmed Deedat was a global caller to Islam, he said.
"I dont think any other Muslim wrote to the Pope, inviting him to Islam, but Sheikh Deedat did. Its our responsibility to continue in propagating his message.
Sheikh Deedats health had been steadily deteriorating in the last few months after he had suffered various complications related to the lock in syndrome stroke which had left him paralysed and bed-ridden for almost a decade.
His death marks the end of an era of Dawah in which his name became synonymous with breaking down inter-faith barriers.
His Life
Born on July 1, 1918, Sheikh Deedat arrived in South Africa, from India, as a nine-year-old in August 1927.
Although he hadnt previously been exposed to the English language, he learnt it in six months, excelled at school and finished top of his class.
However, due to financial considerations, his father removed him from school during his early years of secondary schooling. He was sent to work in a store in a rural area, where his mission of Dawah began.
Students from a Christian missionary school would visit the store preaching their beliefs to him, and knowing little more than the shahadah (testifying that no god but Allah and Muhammad is His prophet), he found it difficult to defend his beliefs.
He then stumbled upon a book which carried a religious dialogue between a Muslim imam and a Christian priest, and this proved to be the first of many books which he would read on the subject.
He began researching both religions and recording his findings in a notebook, after which he started delivering lectures in South Africa.
First Lecture

Deedat became famous for a debate with US Reverend Jimmy Swaggart, on the topic Is the Bible the Word of God.
His first lecture was entitled Muhammad (peace be upon him): Messenger of Peace, at it was delivered in 1940, to 15 people at a cinema in his province.

Syarikat minyak negara, Petronas akan hilang tanggungjawab sosial dan objektif strategiknya kepada negara sekiranya disenaraikan di Bursa Malaysia, kata Ketua Pasukan Perunding Khas Globalisasi Majlis Tindakan Ekonomi Negara (MTEN) Prof Dr Mahani Zainal Abidin. Katanya, Petronas kini memainkan peranan yang besar dari segi pemberian subsidi untuk menjamin harga minyak dan gas dalam negara rendah. "Sekiranya Petronas disenaraikan, maka ianya akan menjadi seperti syarikat minyak lain seperti Shell dan Exon-Mobil dan akan hilang tanggungjawab sosial dan objektif strategiknya kepada negara," katanya dalam Program Isu Semasa yang disiarkan secara langsung oleh TV1 malam tadi. Beliau menegaskan demikian sebagai menjawab soalan seorang pemanggil yang bertanyakan mengapa Petronas
tidak disenaraikan sedangkan langkah itu akan memberi keuntungan berpuluhan bilion ringgit yang boleh digunakan semula untuk meneruskan subsidi minyak. Program sejam itu yang dihoskan Sayed Munawar Sayed Mustar turut disertai penasihat Persekutuan Persatuan Pengguna MalaysiA (Fomca) Prof Datuk Hamdan Adnan. Menurut Bernama, Mahani berkata, jika Petronas disenaraikan di Bursa Malaysia, tindakan itu tidak akan menguntungkan negara dan rakyat. "Simpanan minyak dan gas negara dijangka berakhir dalam masa 19 tahun lagi. Apabila ini sudah berakhir, dari mana Petronas boleh terus mendapatkan minyak untuk menjamin harga terus rendah," katanya. Beliau juga tidak menolak bahawa harga minyak akan terus naik memandangkan negara dijangka berubah dari sebuah negara pengeksport minyak sekarang kepada negara pengimport minyak pada 2009. Sekiranya harga minyak tidak dinaikkan, katanya, sebahagian besar keuntungan Petronas akan tersalur kepada syarikat minyak asing itu. Jumlah subsidi yang akan ditanggung kerajaan tahun ini berikutan kenaikan harga minyak minggu lepas dijangka berada pada tahap RM14.5 bilion, tambahnya. Hamdan pula berkata pengguna secara amnya sedar bahawa subsidi minyak tidak boleh diteruskan tetapi apa yang lebih membimbangkan adalah kenaikan harga barang yang akan berlaku setiap kali harga minyak dinaikkan. "Kita perlu ada ketelusan dari banyak segi, terutamanya rakyat perlu tahu ke manakah perginya hasil keuntungan Petronas dan ianya perlu dijelaskan," katanya. Beliau juga bimbang kesan kenaikan harga minyak terhadap keluarga yang berpendapatan rendah tetapi menpunyai anak serta tanggungan yang ramai. "Bagi mereka yang mempunyai anak
yang ramai di sekolah, sudah tentu akan menghadapi kenaikan lain seperti tambang bas dan belanja untuk anak-anak mereka. Kerajaan perlu mencari cara untuk memastikan tidak ada sesiapa pun yang tercicir kerana kemiskinan," katanya. Beliau turut mengesa masyarakat pengguna supaya lebih berjimat dalam penggunaan minyak serta peka terhadap kenaikan harga barangan dengan membeli di tempat yang menawarkan harga yang rendah.

Anwar Ibrahim is storming back onto Malaysia's political landscape with ambitions to transform the nation's race-based party system, as the centrepiece of a campaign to become prime minister.The former deputy premier last week took another step towards putting the ugly saga of his sacking and imprisonment behind him, winning damages and an apology from the then-police chief who famously beat him after his 1998 arrest.
Anwar, 57, is legally barred from holding political office until 2008 after being convicted of corruption - a charge he says was manufactured to prevent him threatening the dominance of his former mentor Dr Mahathir Mohamad. But he told AFP in an interview that even if the government times the next general elections to ensure he is excluded, a win by the opposition Keadilan, led by his wife Wan Azizah, could see him claim the top job. "If the public, the Malaysian electorate, endorses you, what does it matter whether I contest or not," he said. His advisers say that if Keadilan established a majority with the support of its allies, it could appoint an interim prime minister until Anwar's ban expired and he contested a by-election. "It is a decision of the party in power. So if they want my role, then the party has to decide and the people have
to back the party," Anwar said. His inability to stand for office would only make "a difference for a few months", in the event of a Keadilan poll victory, he said. "Just a few months. If the party wins, then the party will decide." Breaking the racial equation
Despite the brave words, Keadilan suffered a crushing defeat in the 2004 elections and faces a daunting task in unseating the Umno party which has ruled Malaysia since independence in 1957. However, Anwar is their best hope for success and after his release from jail last September, thanks to the overturning of a sodomy conviction which was part of the charges against him, he is now emerging from the political wilderness. Since winning his freedom, Anwar travelled extensively to re-establish his networks both domestically and abroad. But his frequent trips back to Malaysia, which have seen him address nationwide political rallies with calls for democratic reform, are increasing in momentum and creating waves here, despite media blackouts. Anwar has emphasisised Keadilan's multi-racial nature - a rare phenomenon in a political environment where most
parties are race-based. The ruling Barisan Nasional coalition is headed by the Malay-based Umno, with other component parties representing the minority Chinese and Indian communities. Anwar has argued for dismantling the system, which has led to tension over the privileges granted to bumiputeras. He said that only a multi-racial party can give fair representation to all Malaysians, and ensure economic prosperity across the board. "Notwithstanding what happens during the elections or after, I think that is the single most important contribution in contemporary times, to break the racial equation and the racial divide which has been exploited by these party leaders," he said.
Building the alternative government
Anwar, who has ruled out rejoining Umno, said it was only after completing a recent tour of the nation that he decided to throw in his lot with Keadilan and begin the herculean task of building an alternative government. The tour saw him reach out to minority Chinese and Indian communities, while also talking to the Malay heartland. It is "only now that I decided it's time for me to state (this)," he said. "I know it's going to be difficult, it's going to be really tough for me, but if we are able to overcome it, then the entire political landscape will change." His most recent visit to Malaysia last week saw him deliver speeches with the most bite yet. At the heart of his attacks is the National Economic Policy, implemented in 1970 to address the economic gap between the majority Malay population and the successful Chinese community which
dominates business.
The issue is a hot topic in Malaysia, where even Umno has said that the implementation of the affirmative action policy has not worked and has made Malays too reliant on handouts.
Anwar argues that the policy has led to discrimination against minority groups and funnelled money to the ruling elite, while leaving the Malay grassroots impoverished. "I sense people are a bit more willing to come and listen, partly because I provoke them with this issue of Malay rights," he said. While Malays want an assurance their interests are being protected, they are now prepared to discuss reforms, he said. "And I think it's a major radical shift in the thinking of our people."
