More map props on Office for the server to calculate perhaps?

Hey Guys

Appreciating all the advice, I just thought it was odd that there is
only about 5-10 choke on dust2 but up to 50+ on office with the same
server settings on the same machine.

I'm downloading Core 5 DVD right now and load a box with it to check it
out. Are you using the Fedora Directory Server to serve files? I
learned on Apache. How's the integration in windows environments?

to be in the Linux game to keep up with all the disto's that come out

Theres a good reason people diss winblows. It sucks badly.

You can ask any linux server provider why they use linux distros.
Because linux works at a higher level of performance while the CPU stays
at a lower level of usage, not bottleknecked like windows does.

But of course, if you take a win2003 server with a higher CPU and more
ram it can run just as well as a linux box can on a lower quality CPU
and lower ram.

I have never seen a windows box out perform any fedora box with the same
specs unless you tweak the quantums in the windows server.

I had to restart Winbloze. Linux is looking better and better every day.
Turn on my primary workstation, and I says something about
c:\windows\system32\config is missing or corrupt and windows won't
start, thank you for using Microsoft products. I had to boot to linux (
I have 3 OSs on the box) and restore my winbloze installation,
fortunately I had a backup).

I find this somewhat disturbing. No messages in the event log. Restarted
srcds, restarted hlsw. Won't connect. Restart winbloze and now it works.

2006-08-20 Thread kyle

[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]
I almost forgot to give all you windows admins this.
If you must run on windows, this will help.

General tips for Windows HLDS performance
---

Don't over-mod your server, AMX and adminmod are useful tools, but loading
AMX, AM, Statsme, several of Hullu's mods, WC3 mod (both kinds!), etc, etc..
Will only add more CPU stress to your server... If your CPU becomes
overworked, client pings will go up as the server loses the ability to keep
calculating packet information and sending them out at a fast pace.
Don't run multiple instances of HLDS unless you're running a multi-processor
machine... It would be... Unwise for you to think you can do this
Use a clean-install of Windows, to keep 3rd party background
processes/services to a minimum
If you do not have a hardware firewall, use a software firewall that runs as
a background service, and can be tweaked to fit HLDS' needs without bogging
down the rest of the system with unnecessary security
Keep Windows updated! Unfortunately Windows has security issues, and
although the auto-update feature sounds like a good idea for an HLDS server,
it's really rather bothersome because you cannot choose which updates to
install or ignore, and your server may decide to suddenly reboot to install
critical updates. I suggest you disable/stop the auto-update service, and
specify a time of the week that you will use to turn off the server and do
updates/maintenance
Disable unused/unnecessary services (there are so many articles on this, a
good one is http://www.blackviper.com/WIN2K/ser.../servicecfg.htm)
Although WinHL-Booster DOES work to some degree, it usually loses its
effectiveness at 5-6 players, and in his new version, even makes use of PDH
to gather performance data, which again - is more pointless DLL loading
which should be avoided. Though increasing the global mmtimer resolution
does help somewhat, it's sort've trivial - it's up to you.
If you're not using your server for IIS/FTP, disabled those services for
security and for extra resources. If you must use IIS/FTP, enable CPU
throttling, and enforce a limit of 1% usage, this is still plenty for a
simple webpage or FTP access, don't let IIS/FTP take focus away from HLDS.
Specifying "-heapsize " at the command line seems to have lost all
affect as I can specify "-heapsize 9" without crashing...
Limiting packet rate is usually a good idea! The more packets your server
receives every second, the more work it has to do, and this increases
exponentially! A client updaterate of 20 packets-per-second, is more than
enough for smooth gameplay, and anything over 50 is just pointless CPU use
and will only increase client choke and packet-loss (unless you're on a LAN
) If you have a weaker CPU but would like to host more players, try
decreasing the sv_maxupdaterate value from 100 (screw CAL, 100pps is
pointless) to something lower to prevent players from overloading your CPU
with packet information.
Use various tweak guides to get better network performance. I am not one of
those guides, there are plenty... Make the most out of your connection! I
suggest looking around @ http://www.winguides.com/

Re: [hlds] hlds choke

2006-08-20 Thread Aaron

Hey Guys

Appreciating all the advice, I just thought it was odd that there is only
about 5-10 choke on dust2 but up to 50+ on office with the same server
settings on the same machine.

Dropping packets is a Server CPU issue

In any case, unless I've missed something, the OP said they were running 2
x
40 player 66 tickrate SRCDS

If that is the case, sv_maxrate 1 & sv_maxupdaterate 50 is woefully
inadequate.

But I am assuming that people on this list have paid attention to how much
bandwidth a client is capable if using on a 40 player 66 tickrate server.

In the end they are your servers, do whatever the hell you want.

I'm guessing you've checked this, but how is the server performing in

I have found from personal experience that on the start of every round,
if your machine cannot cope well (or is hitting it's ceiling on
performance), you sometimes get choppy gameplay and choke/loss. Are you
able to contact your host to get some type of real-time reporting on the
server at all to see if this is maybe a contributing factor?

I've noticed this on some of the GA servers too, Whisper. On occaision
when a 24 or 32 player server is full, it will drop IN packets a fair
bit until people start to die off. Not sure if this is bandwidth or
performance related though, as it gets better when there are less people
in the server.

Thanks Kyle

I will try out those settings, keep in mind I do this for a hobby and
just got into computers in general so I may not get the grasp on this
stuff as quickly as yourself and find it hard squeezing in time to read
but I have read whispers wiki a couple of times.

By the way I do not host the server myself, it is housed at a datacenter
in texas.

Agreed, when I was running windows based servers I used serverDoc to
restart my servers every morning at 5am. But now I only use fedora core 4
or 5. And I just manualy restart them once every few days.

You're not just a random lucky windows admin, it's really quite a capable
server and client OS. So are *nix variants, just need to know when to use
which.

To the topic at hand, that's a corrupt registry hive and easily fixed via
the recovery console (backup hive files are located in C:\WINDOWS\repair).
Only time I've seen that happen is bad physical drives or corrupt file
systems (neither a fault of Windows).

RE: [hlds] HLSW stopped picking up my server

2006-08-20 Thread Adam Sando
I'm not sure why people bag Windows so much.

My box has been running for almost 12 months without any issues at all.
I have managed to un-install and re-install PHP, MySQL, IIS, and a stack
of misc crap on it, and it has yet to die on me.

The only reboots I've done have been part of routine maintenance
(patch/hot-fix installation), or new software installations.

Maybe im just the lucky 1 Windows Admin out there :)

Adam

Turn on my primary workstation, and I says something about
c:\windows\system32\config is missing or corrupt and windows won't
start, thank you for using Microsoft products. I had to boot to linux (

I find this somewhat disturbing. No messages in the event log. Restarted
srcds, restarted hlsw. Won't connect. Restart winbloze and now it works.

RE: [hlds] hlds choke

2006-08-20 Thread Adam Sando
I'm guessing you've checked this, but how is the server performing in
terms of memory, CPU and disk performance?

Adam

Thanks Kyle

I will try out those settings, keep in mind I do this for a hobby and
just got into computers in general so I may not get the grasp on this
stuff as quickly as yourself and find it hard squeezing in time to read
but I have read whispers wiki a couple of times.

By the way I do not host the server myself, it is housed at a datacenter
in texas.

Not this exact issue, but I did finally figure out a problem I was
having during map changes - where everyone else was connected to my
server but me!

The problem turned out to be an older hardware firewall, which only had
half-duplex on the "wan" port! I had a dual firewall setup to create a
wireless dmz and the inner firewall was the older pos.

Anyway, not to sure this helps you really, but you may have a similar
problem with some older network equipment?

Good luck.

I'm currently running a srcds HL1 dedicated server, works fine, people
pile in all the time (not that I have much competition, LOL). Problem -
out of the blue, hlsw no longer sees the server. Connection fails. It
worked this morning, it stopped sometime during the day. Restarted
server, restarted hlsw. No config changes. Nothing in event log. Anyone
ever see this before?

RE: [hlds] Maps not downloading

2006-08-20 Thread Adam Sando
Not too sure if this will help, but I have a web server running on my srcds
game server, and utilise sv_downloadurl to push files to the client.

I use CSRSC (Counter Strike Redirect Server Checker) to scan my SRCDS CS:S
folder, and it creates bz2 copies of everything that isn't in the default GCF's
(I think?!).

I believe you can get it from here:
www.brainless.us

All I have setup is IIS, with a virtual directory pointing to the output from
CSRSC. Works a treat. Not sure if I even setup all the MIME mappings actually,
however I am running IIS 5.1 (the default in WinXP) so who knows.

I haven't had any complaints about lag from resource downloads... yet ;)

Adam

Hi Frazer,

As usual I'm amazed at the level of help.
Followed the instructions and voila, I'm up and running :)

There are a few things that could have been the cause of my problems:

1. My MIME types weren't described as application (don't know if it matters)

2. I hadn't allowed scripts on the virtual directory (it's off by default)

3. I changed my sv_downloadurl to http://myIP/MyVirtualDirectory/hl2mp
It might be that the hl2mp directory within the virtual directory did the
trick.
I just put the maps folder in my virtual directory.

This can thus be thought of as possible problems for allowing downloads with
IIS :)

See Frazers guide below for the solution.

I mean sv_maxrate 2 seems reasonable for a 66 tickrate server, SRCDS
default = 0 anyhow.

sv_maxupdaterate of at least 66 would also not be unreasonable for a 66
tickrate server, hell, even Valve's SRCDS default is 60!

Or did I miss something?

2006-08-20 Thread Aaron

Thanks Kyle

I will try out those settings, keep in mind I do this for a hobby and just
got into computers in general so I may not get the grasp on this stuff as
quickly as yourself and find it hard squeezing in time to read but I have
read whispers wiki a couple of times.

By the way I do not host the server myself, it is housed at a datacenter in
texas.

Its just so damn simple to run a well performing server, I have no idea

Well I don't run any srcds but if your talking about just hlds, what cvars
do you have for rates in your server.cfg.

I use these for my 26 slot day of defeat server and I never get any choke.
They will work fine for any HL1 mod. How much choke are you getting.
Are you getting enough choke to cause loss or what.
Loss is what you don't want and choke higher then say 9.
Of course you always get some choke when you have died and are respawning.
BTW, have you power cycled your modem and router.
You have to do that at least once ever other day.

Sv_allowdownload 1
Sv_allowupload 1
Sv_maxrate 1
Sv_minrate 4000
Sv_maxupdaterate 50
Sv_minupdaterate 20

Decalfrequency 120
