RE: [hlds] Latest Win Version, HLDS - Lag Issue

2004-06-25 Thread Mike Munoz
Actually "Moot Point" is the correct terminology..

Excerpt from my Random House College dictionary:

Moot, adj. 1. subject to argument or discussion; debatable; doubtful: a moot
point. 2. of little or no practical value or meaning; purely academic.
There's more, but I think you get the point!

A link to an online dictionary also..

RE: [hlds] Latest Win Version, HLDS - Lag Issue

2004-06-24 Thread David Fencik
How much can we trust a software company like Valve? Imagine this...

Someone could easily slip in some code that would fetch instructions and
compute them, reporting the results back to Valve (like
distributed.net). Imagine if that were the cause of the lag? Think of
the CPU resources one would have!

Dave

Alfred,

Here is an idea .

Add a checkbox or command line switch to Steam in which people can volunteer
as a Beta tester.

Then roll out the change to these people's servers and clients only.

After a week or so do it for everyone else.

Just a though...

what don't all you gsp's go away and let this list go to what it was,

I don't care if you are loosing money,
i don't care which gsp has the largest "assets"

and i sure most people don't care to listen to Roc and Shane bickering
between each other
im fairly sure if you took it off the list (yes send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
or [EMAIL PROTECTED])
no one would miss it.

I would much rather see,
I need help with amx, or what are the best server settings then
crying about how valve are killing your business.

if u want to do that make your own list

i don't care which gsp has the largest "assets"

and i sure most people don't care to listen to Roc and Shane bickering
between each other
im fairly sure if you took it off the list (yes send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
or [EMAIL PROTECTED])
no one would miss it.

I would much rather see,
I need help with amx, or what are the best server settings then
crying about how valve are killing your business.

if u want to do that make your own list

Kingsley

Re: [hlds] Latest Win Version, HLDS - Lag Issue

2004-06-23 Thread Shane Robinett
Roc, I agree with point 1 for CS/CZ..

However, Valve has never (as far as I can recall in our 3 years) ever made
an agreement or deal with us resellers. Far more people run the game on
their private networks @ work or @ home.

2004-06-23 Thread James Bowling
Now that is the most ridiculous idea I have ever heard...You need to
remember that a lot of us on this list are not just end users who happen to
rent a server. Most of us are business owners who run GSPs and shutting
down would be stupid and cost us more money than it is worth.

to valve just a thought.

Dude what's your problem? Am I not entitled to reply to the comments or is
this suddenly not a forum?

If you don't like what I'm saying that's all good and well but do not tell
me not to respond to a post Ok. Last time I checked we still had freedom!

Filter me if you don't like it!

2004-06-23 Thread Roc
Ok, I do understand the developers view.

Now, I am not a subscriber but lets try the subscribers view!

A subscribing customer who bought Condition Zero (for instance) through
STEAM to play online does not care one bit about the developing end of it or
if the game is 5 years old!
They just want what they are subscribing for to work. :)

Or the guy who sells servers view.
He stands to lose customers when Admin thinks his service stinks because he
gets 14 or more complaints about lag.

RE: [hlds] Latest Win Version, HLDS - Lag Issue

2004-06-23 Thread Darren J. Mason
Like someone said earlier - "spoken like a true non-developer"

I am not taking your post the wrong way. Like many here I develop software
for a living. Very rare is the occasion that a product is made 100%
perfectly with no need for any future patches or upgrades. Even the best and
brightest minds can work hard on an upgrade or patch and still don't have
100% oversight/foresight to know and understand what "might" happen (in this
case lag was introduced) or the affects of the new patch/upgrade on the
existing system.

This doesn't mean the lag bug doesn't bother the heck out of me or do I
think it's acceptable. But, did you fail to see that Alfred took the time to
post that they were already testing a fix for this!?! Gee this means that
from day one (ok maybe day two) Valve was listening to us here and
investigating the issue, discovered a true issue, and started created a fix
for it.

This is not ass kissing as you suppose - I do not currently, nor have I ever
received any benefit from posting pro-Valve, or anti-valve comments here or
anywhere else. Pardon me, the single and most important benefit is that I
have a place to post and Valve does have people who take the time to answer.

P.S. Alfred - this post should put me over the top in qualifying for the
pre-release HL2 copy many others have already received. I hope you and the
guys could find it in your heart to email it to me right away! ;)

2004-06-23 Thread Darren J. Mason
wow, you sure got a bug up your bum!

Seriously, think about all that has transpired since the implementation of
Steam and the number of times something like this has happened. While we all
have had our moments of being pissy and wishing things would get done
faster, smoother, and more reliably, all in all the ball has been rolling in
the right direction without too much trouble. Besides, you can download the
old mp.dll like everyone else - or don't you know how to download.

Geez boy, you are dealing with a 5 year old game anyway - give it a rest.

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.

Windows systems, Intel - Win 2003 environments, dual processor

I have 14 open calls from public server clients reporting lag issues. 10-30
second freezes for client connections. Restarting the server seems to
resolve it, for a short term. Problem appears to have started in the last

2004-06-18 Thread James Bowling
And also, keep in mind that "if" you were correct, which you aren't, the
network engineers who allowed the BGP sessions to become overloaded would
have been fired in the first place. So, I highly doubt that your instance
here is the true problem. Also, many of us have already established that
the problem is not latency but a problem with CPU usage spiking and causing
the latency. So please try to read the rest of the posts before coming out
and saying some lame barney-type excuse for kissing VALVe's ass. Thanks!

Keep in mind that storms, and the DAMAGE they have caused to backbones are
why you are possibly why you are seeing increased latency. Remember all
those tornadoes and the severe weather? Well, I am sure quite a few nodes
are having to re-route now. And these re-routing nodes are probably
OVERLOADED.

Instead of blaming VALVe, why don't you do a tracert first. And see if their
is any BAD nodes on the route. 8) -StealthMode

Thats bullshit. amxmod have to hook these functions, to call it. When
the
parameters were changed, then it cant be hooked. If it cant
be hooked, then it cant be used by amxmod. There is no endless loop,
because the lag spikes are not endless.
Also "clean" servers have the same problem, so dont spread your

RE: [hlds] Latest Win Version, HLDS - Lag Issue

2004-06-17 Thread Pawel Dabrowski
Confirmed the old dll does fix the problem with server cpu spike but there
are things missing like the round time.
At this point we are looking at dropping all our 1.6 servers and going back
to 1.5 or maybe just dropping counter-strike in total with all the problems
experienced. Here in South Africa we are reliant on Cheating Death to do our
anti-cheats since VAC causes problems with the limited bandwidth out of our
country and users struggling to get the VAC module downloaded. Now with
Cheating Death breaking yet again plus the server cpu spikes plus AMX
needing to be upgraded it makes no sence in hosting a game thats more of a
problem to maintain than anything else.

Disappointed Counter-Strike Server Admin.

"Most" of the issues with lag are a direct result of three native functions
changing/being removed. If you run amx mod or amxmodx on your servers
disable it. These 3 native functions being gone are causing parts of these
modifications to loop endlessly.

  It has happened!

Since the recent Steam update earlier this week, a few natives in the
cstrike module don't work anymore. Any plugins using these natives will not
work as expected.
  They are: cs_get_user_deaths, cs_set_user_bpammo and
cs_get_user_bpammo.

This is a problem that we have expected to arise at some point with
some Steam updates, but that never happened until now.

The fix for this is very easy but still has to be done. We will bring
you a new set of cstrike builds for Windows and Linux shortly - watch this
space. This problem obviously shouldn't affect WON servers.

And according to this info, ANY plugin that calls upon these functions is
going to lag up the server. No matter if its amx mod, adminmod, or amxmodx.

RE: [hlds] Latest Win Version, HLDS - Lag Issue

2004-06-17 Thread Greg
In response to everyone's issues, please be aware that AMXx no longer
functions appropriately within the latest update on the CS side of the
fence.

Certain entities and their calls/functions have moved/changed.

For more information, see the latest post on the main space of www [dot]
amxmodx [dot] org

To keep it simple, since these entities and calls are being used
tremendously inside of CS, etc. (or variations thereof in other mods, since
internally to AMXx, they are all sharing the same tags, etc.) you will
definitely incur "lag" as when these functions are called up into play, they
are looping and causing spikes, etc.

For now, it is recommended that if you use AMXx in conjunction with a CS
server, simply disable AMXx or the CS modules themselves (admin modules
should be fine).

AMXx is working hard to release a new revision to function within the
constraints of the ever-changing HLDS/Steam/{mod} API and function/entity
set.

Thanks!

- Greg

server spikes that are forcing client disconnects or delays.

list, sometimes they don't have time to post but they do

Keep in mind that storms, and the DAMAGE they have caused to backbones are
why you are possibly why you are seeing increased latency. Remember all
those tornadoes and the severe weather? Well, I am sure quite a few nodes
are having to re-route now. And these re-routing nodes are probably
OVERLOADED.

Instead of blaming VALVe, why don't you do a tracert first. And see if their
is any BAD nodes on the route. 8)

I have 14 open calls from public server clients reporting lag issues.
10-30 second freezes for client connections. Restarting the server
seems to resolve it, for a short term. Problem appears to have started
in the last day or two.

For more information, see the latest post on the main space of
www.amxmodx.org

To keep it simple, since these entities and calls are being used
tremendously inside of CS, etc. (or variations thereof in other mods, since
internally to AMXx, they are all sharing the same tags, etc.) you will
definitely incur "lag" as when these functions are called up into play, they
are looping and causing spikes, etc.

For now, it is recommended that if you use AMXx in conjunction with a CS
server, simply disable AMXx or the CS modules themselves (admin modules
should be fine).

AMXx is working hard to release a new revision to function within the
constraints of the ever-changing HLDS/Steam/{mod} API and function/entity
set.

Thanks!

- Greg

Re: [hlds] Latest Win Version, HLDS - Lag Issue

2004-06-16 Thread Ryan Lewis
I'm just wondering whether you guys are using metamod/AMX mod. I haven't
noticed any issue on our server, but we don't use any mods on it (its a bog
standard match server).

Its a windows machine running on AMD hardware.
