seven HUNDRED valve servers? I'm sorry, but I'm with those kinds of numbers I'm going to re-raise my earlier point about valve actively "skimming" the bulk of the quickplay traffic for themselves and leaving barely anything for communities. More and more servers popping up with the event maps and less players (over time) interested in playing them. Seems normal to me. Agreed. but if the vast majority of players connect through quickplay and it cuts deeply in to server Ad revenue, which seems likely, then admins will be looking elsewhere and those are the logical places to go. - Original Message - From: "DontWannaName!" Re: [hlds_linux] Coming soon: changes to TF HTML MOTD support
It's probably due to those servers that were loading ads nonstop in an invisible window. This worked on both quickplay connects and normal ones and it can cause performance issues for the clients. It also made the use of fakeplayers profitable. I personally would of preferred it to show the MOTD once and then make it so you can't open it again at all for quickplay players. But oh well. Re: [hlds_linux] Is sv_tags "event247" broken after the update?
I could try to talk with a friend of mine to see if his server could be borrowed for testing this, however he's not online at the moment. And if I mess with that much on the server I map-dev for, the sysadmin would probably kill me. I'll see if I can't test later, though. -G.A.W. (Gaz Wilmbroke, pleased to meet you as well. (Hi, I'm Powerlord, nice to meet you.) The second server is never going to be part of QuickPlay simply because my community doesn't like crits, weapon spread, or damage spread. I could experiment with the first server and try changing those 3 cvars to see if any of them remove me from the pool, but unfortunately since it doesn't have any players at the moment... I should probably switch it back to my PropHunt Redux test server. On 11/6/2013 7:21 PM, Gaz Wilmbroke wrote: I can't say if they've changed it, as that thread was made in 2011. Having said that, my main server, which has a registered account but is set to not join quickplay, wasn't seeing any drops this year. My event server has a separate account and is registered for quickplay, and Halloween drops occur on it as expected. So, either this year is being more restrictive about accounts or something else is wrong on my main server's account. I wasn't so sure about this, and honestly doesn't affect me because I run trade servers and jailbreak, but it seems fine. If you join the server, you don't have to download any HTML junk and don't have to watch any ads...but if you like the server, save to favorites and reconnect you see whatever the HTML page is, depending on whether or not the client has HTML enabled. Guys, this is a victory for matchmaking clients who just want to play and not get spammed by the servers they join. I like it. Re: [hlds_linux] Coming soon: changes to TF HTML MOTD support
My only concern with this change is that with a HTML motd, you can keep a MOTD central. That's a bit harder to do with a text MOTD, unless motdfile_text can be defined as a URL to a textfile. Re: [hlds_linux] Is sv_tags "event247" broken after the update?
I should point out that I'm the one that made that thread in the first place. Re: [hlds_linux] Coming soon: changes to TF HTML MOTD support
Oddly enough, a handful of communities have been shut down because of the recent changes. This one will affect a few more. Can't say I'm saddened by this since those communities were cancer to TF2. Re: [hlds_linux] Coming soon: changes to TF HTML MOTD support
Can you tell us the reason for this change? Is there no other solution rather than removing functionality from the game? The complaint before was forced ads. Servers cannot resend the MOTD to quickplay players anymore so I don't understand why additional restrictions need to be introduced. HTML motds are superior to text motds even only shown at connection. They look better and they allow you to update the page without rebooting the server. Especially when it comes to TF2 players, no one is going to pay attention to an unformatted wall of text that could contain important rules or links to your website. With these new restrictions both the webpage and the text file needs to be maintained. Re: [hlds_linux] Is sv_tags "event247" broken after the update?
As was already stated in that thread, being registered doesn't necessarily opt you in to quickplay. Re: [hlds_linux] Is sv_tags "event247" broken after the update?
Using my experimental horrible, horrible app. There are 2243 (responsive) servers at the moment running HellTower. From those 2243 servers, 1414 of them are community servers. From the remaining 829, 705 of those are Valve servers exclusively running Hell Tower. The remaining 124 Valve servers that are running the mixture of the four, which just so happen to be on HellTower at the moment. Hopefully this helps, Kyle. It requires at minimum 10 players for gifts to start dropping, however last I checked if your server wasn't registered with quickplay matchmaking for at least (I believe 10) hours they won't drop. -G.A.W. -- Message: 2 Date: Wed, 06 Nov 2013 08:15:53 +0200 From: ics To: Half-Life dedicated Linux server mailing list Subject: Re: [hlds_linux] Is sv_tags "event247" broken after the update?
