Re: [hlds_linux] Coming soon: changes to TF HTML MOTD support
Random idea: Could we get a way to send just one image (no HTML, no scripts) in place of the text motd? This could let server ops still show a decent looking motd without any sort of foolery. Could they still put an ad there? Sure. But it won't be a flash player, it would have to be (mostly) static. Thoughts? Re: [hlds_linux] Suddenly very low server population
Cameron, I know your pain. When the quickplay system was first introduced my server was full 24/7 for a solid month. Gametracker ranked my server in the top 150, felt good man. But, just like you, one day, all traffic dropped. Nothing changed on my end, so I was at a loss as to why, just as you are now. I have not had the time to rebuild a community lately, but I would agree with others on here: Do what you must to get regulars to help populate it. Steam groups, events, gifts (if you're that nice), those sorts of things. Even if you can't get enough to fill it, as long as you have (I believe) six players, you have a much better chance of getting quickplay traffic. The main point I wanted to make is that a server loosing out to Valve servers is not new. This sort of thing has been happening since it was introduced. Re: [hlds_linux] Suddenly very low server population
I do see Valve's reasoning for this. They want new players to play the game the way they designed it. Not with weird plugins, maps, or configs. I think they planned on having new players eventually grow out of the playpens that are the Valve servers, but as Cameron says, they aren't. Or at least it does not look like they are. I would love to see some data on this, if it could even be gathered. Also let's face it, the only real way to find other community servers are either via your friends list (where do my friends play), and the server browser and that thing is, was, and always will be a mess. So with these two limited (and intimidating options (again, server browser)), they will continue to hit the play now button. I don't really think that Valve is killing the TF2 community by doing this, but they are not really helping the few of us that could really use some help getting servers off the ground. As an aside, I'd love to see an additional bonus for those of us with smaller account ids (like those of us with sub 1000) :D On Wed, Apr 25, 2012 at 4:38 PM, Cameron Munroe cmun...@cameronmunroe.comwrote: I agree with you on the fact that people are complaining about my server not being full and that they don't like the server anyways, but what Valve has done is still like handing all young children a smoke and lighting it for them, once they are addicted to it they never leave or leave that that brand, therfore Valve is teaching noobs to play on their servers and not community servers. anyways. Re: [hlds_linux] Some server issues
Mine was hanging for a few seconds on round ends. I figure that has to do with the 700+ users who have connected since last restart. Obviously a restart fixed that. I would be willing to bet that most everyone knows steam from the modern warfare game, cstrike source or left for dead. We (or maybe mostly me) remember half-life because I am older. Sorry- I do not mean to spam this board and I usually keep quiet on most conversations. If you have concrete evidence of an exploit please provide us with any information you have. We would certainly take such an exploit seriously. However, we currently aren't aware of any such exploit and have no evidence that one would be possible. Re: [hlds_linux] Steam support library problem
but did u put a server config in the install? On Fri, Jun 25, 2010 at 10:06 PM, David Parker dpar...@utica.edu wrote: Thanks, but that doesn't seem to be the problem. This is just plain crazy. I rebooted the box (to make sure there are no weird ghost processes running, although there did not seem to be before). Then I created a whole new directory and did a full, clean install of CS:S into the new directory from Steam. Now, the CS:S server appears to start up just fine, but it crashes if someone connects to it. If I start up the server and then change the map using map de_dust2 (or any other map name) in the console, the new map loads, but then the server hangs for about 5 minutes after this message is printed: [S_API FAIL] SteamAPI_Init() failed; unable to update local steamclient.dll. Continuing with current version anyway. During this time, I cannot type anything on the console, and the server stops responding to A2S_INFO and other queries. After about five minutes, it spits this message out to the console and then seems to be fine, except that no one can join it: * * Unable to load Steam support library.* * This server will operate in LAN mode only.* * Again, this is a clean CS:S install, but this is the third install of CS:S on this box which has had this problem. I never had any problems with CS:S on this box up until the last update. The box is also running servers for TF2, CS 1.6, and CS:CZ and those seem to be running just fine. [hlds_linux] TF2 Rcon fail after last update
Hey guys, since the last update I haven't been able to get RCON working. I've restarted the servers a few times, my ports are forwarded and all that. In game I get this: Lost RCON connection, please retry command (UNKNOWN ERROR) HLSW just fails. When try to RCON in game, the server gets the command and will execute them, but I still get the error in my console. Like a status command won't give the results, however I am able to say turn friendly fire on via RCON. ___ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux

Re: [hlds_linux] sv_pure...cheat?
Well no, it doesn't disable VAC at all, aimbots, speedhacks, etc, can still not be used since VAC will still catch these. Material wallhacks (the last time that I tested one out anyway) are pretty naff, and people show themselves up by shooting through walls when they think someone is in front of them (since there is effectively no distance telltale). Donnie Newlove wrote: EXE ones type of hacks has a chance to be caught by VAC, material hacks does not. Using sv_pure 0 effectively disables VAC since that means wallhacks can be used at absolutely no risk of ever getting VAC banned. i dont remember if putting -secure in the command line helped or not. last week i ran 15 servers off of 4 diff boxes. pings spiked on all across 5 static ip's so i was wondering if the connection to the master might have been the culprit but ur probably right-something is wrong on my end im getting players on my servers but i dont worry about it. alot of times status brings up (off top of head) insecure-(secure mode enabled) lost connection to steam that was really my main question On Mon, Jan 18, 2010 at 8:35 PM, Tony Paloma drunkenf...@hotmail.comwrote: Except heartbeat has nothing to do with connection to steam servers.
