Re: [hlds_linux] Coming soon: changes to TF HTML MOTD support

2013-11-07 Thread Tom Grant
Random idea: Could we get a way to send just one image (no HTML, no
scripts) in place of the text motd? This could let server ops still show a
decent looking motd without any sort of foolery. Could they still put an ad
there? Sure. But it won't be a flash player, it would have to be (mostly)
static.

Thoughts?

For the 9001'th time red x's mean you are missing files for your maps

doing a clean install / disabling your ui mods.

Re: [hlds_linux] Suddenly very low server population

2012-04-25 Thread Tom Grant
Cameron,
I know your pain. When the quickplay system was first introduced my server
was full 24/7 for a solid month. Gametracker ranked my server in the top
150, felt good man. But, just like you, one day, all traffic
dropped. Nothing changed on my end, so I was at a loss as to why, just as
you are now.

I have not had the time to rebuild a community lately, but I would agree
with others on here: Do what you must to get regulars to help populate it.
Steam groups, events, gifts (if you're that nice), those sorts of things.
Even if you can't get enough to fill it, as long as you have (I believe)
six players, you have a much better chance of getting quickplay traffic.

The main point I wanted to make is that a server loosing out to Valve
servers is not new. This sort of thing has been happening since it was
introduced.

Re: [hlds_linux] Suddenly very low server population

2012-04-25 Thread Tom Grant
I do see Valve's reasoning for this. They want new players to play the game
the way they designed it. Not with weird plugins, maps, or configs. I think
they planned on having new players eventually grow out of the playpens that
are the Valve servers, but as Cameron says, they aren't. Or at least it
does not look like they are. I would love to see some data on this, if it
could even be gathered.

Also let's face it, the only real way to find other community servers are
either via your friends list (where do my friends play), and the server
browser and that thing is, was, and always will be a mess. So with these
two limited (and intimidating options (again, server browser)), they
will continue to hit the play now button.

I don't really think that Valve is killing the TF2 community by doing this,
but they are not really helping the few of us that could really use some
help getting servers off the ground.

As an aside, I'd love to see an additional bonus for those of us with
smaller account ids (like those of us with sub 1000) :D

I'm not sure SMAC fits into that, assuming it actually achieves anything.

 Hi,

Does anyone know the cause for a server to drop off the quickplay system?

Our servers seem to drop off quite regularly and require a full reboot to
get them back on (a mapchange has no effect).

Also, the crashes are still around (occasionally). Now I don;t really mind
having bugs in software and I understand it takes time to track them down
and fix them, however, a bit more communication regarding this subject from
VALVe side is highly appreciated. We're working around the clock on finding
possible causes for the crashes to find workarounds till things are fixed,
provide as much feedback as possible, minidumps etc. It's not to much to ask
for a mail on the list every few days to give a (small) update on the
 matter, is it?

Subject: [hlds_linux] Dropping off quickplay crashes

   Hi,

Does anyone know the cause for a server to drop off the quickplay
   system?

Our servers seem to drop off quite regularly and require a full
 reboot to
get them back on (a mapchange has no effect).

Also, the crashes are still around (occasionally). Now I don;t really
   mind
having bugs in software and I understand it takes time to track them
 down
and fix them, however, a bit more communication regarding this
 subject
   from
VALVe side is highly appreciated. We're working around the clock on
   finding
possible causes for the crashes to find workarounds till things are
   fixed,
provide as much feedback as possible, minidumps etc. It's not to much
 to
   ask
for a mail on the list every few days to give a (small) update on the
   matter, is it?

Re: [hlds_linux] Valve TF2 servers no longer have quickplay advantage

2011-07-28 Thread Tom Grant
What would cause a server to suddenly stop receiving quick play traffic?
Since the Free to Play update my server was enjoying constant traffic until
about a week or two ago. When this started my server was in good standing
and had a slightly upward trend. No variables were changed either.

Players that join through quickplay and stay long should give points.
Players that have put servers in favourites should give that server points.
Players that get banned and blacklist server whould not give - points to

Boots should give - points to server.

   Hello all.

An update earlier this week contained an adjustment to the scoring
 bonus
we give to Valve servers for quickplay servers. There is still a bonus
 when
inexperienced players are searching. However, the bonus decreases as
 they
gain play hours, and it drops to zero at around 20 hours of play time.
(Don't take the specific numbers too literally, all the details are
 subject
  to tweaking, of course.)

Our goals with these changes are:
   * Ensure that new players have the vanilla TF2 experience.
   * Integrate experienced players into the regular community, help them
discover the diversity, and let them find the experience they want.

Your servers are competing with Valve servers on an equal footing for
quickplay customers. In fact, my guess --- although I don't really have
 any
data to back this up --- is that directing the noobs towards the Valve
servers actually gives them a disadvantage.

I would be willing to bet that most everyone knows steam from the modern

remember half-life because I am older. While half life and it's relatives

Re: [hlds_linux] L4D2 updates

2010-07-30 Thread tom nikitopoulos
Before the major update like maybe 2 months ago I was high on the horse. I
am small time (I run 10 boxes off of 5 ip's) I had a couple of decent
ranked stock l4d2 servers. I was thinking oh yeah baby- I was like a
little kid checking game-monitor.com every two days. Then after the update
monsoon (and maybe college kids leaving for summer) my decent ranked servers
went to crap.I thought I had done something wrong, but I wasnt sure. After
this I went on game-monitor.com and checked top ranked l4d2 servers and they
were all Valve servers. I was like wth? I realize that sv_region may have
needed some fixin but I dunno.

Steven,
but work with us here to help provide a quality service to your customers
please!

Who are the customers here? I don't charge for my servers. I not really
prepared to do so.
Does anybody here pay Valve for the right to run gameservers for Valve? Or
the downloads of files and updates?

My point is this- there is no leverage for Valve or Activision to do
anything but the way they wanna do it

I can't find anywhere that has any information on Valves course of action
in regards to this error. I know that it is because my outdated CPU does not
support the SSE2 instruction set as this has occured in the past. The last
time it happened, it took about 2 weeks for Valve to release a new update to
fix it. I don't want to keep trying if they will never fix it, but am
willing to wait if they will fix it.

 Thank You.

I don't think Valve publishes roadmaps for their (server) software.
Would love to be told otherwise.

Re: [hlds_linux] Steam support library problem

but did u put a server config in the install?

On Fri, Jun 25, 2010 at 10:06 PM, David Parker dpar...@utica.edu wrote:

Thanks, but that doesn't seem to be the problem. This is just plain
crazy. I rebooted the box (to make sure there are no weird ghost processes
running, although there did not seem to be before). Then I created a whole
new directory and did a full, clean install of CS:S into the new directory
from Steam. Now, the CS:S server appears to start up just fine, but it
crashes if someone connects to it. If I start up the server and then change
the map using map de_dust2 (or any other map name) in the console, the new
map loads, but then the server hangs for about 5 minutes after this message
 is printed:

[S_API FAIL] SteamAPI_Init() failed; unable to update local
steamclient.dll. Continuing with current version anyway.

During this time, I cannot type anything on the console, and the server
stops responding to A2S_INFO and other queries. After about five minutes,
it spits this message out to the console and then seems to be fine, except
that no one can join it:

 *
 * Unable to load Steam support library.*
 * This server will operate in LAN mode only.*
 *

Again, this is a clean CS:S install, but this is the third install of CS:S
on this box which has had this problem. I never had any problems with CS:S
on this box up until the last update. The box is also running servers for
TF2, CS 1.6, and CS:CZ and those seem to be running just fine.

The OS is Debian Lenny 64-bit, up-to-date.

 I'm at a total loss.

[hlds_linux] ip in command line

2010-06-14 Thread tom nikitopoulos
Hi all,

I am still having problems logging in remotely thru game on css. Trying to
do different combinations to see if any thing works.
I have never used a ip in command line but when i do I get a bind error.

I associate port 27030 with my css server so if i do -ip or +ip I get
cannot assign UDP port server restart in 10 secs.

I notice when i do status in game my server is listed as a loopback
address

udp/ip 127.0.1.1 (guess):27030

Any ideas?

Do any of you have a concrete list of master server ips ?

I am posting it since these are out there for some time now, but have not

[hlds_linux] diff directories?

2010-03-27 Thread tom nikitopoulos
i had a question.
Do most of you build systems with different server files in different
directories?
There is alot of theories on the web. I have a file named hlds and within
this file i have used the tag -dir . to download the files for l4d and l4d2
and so on.
I could of swore that one page i looked at said to download the server files
in different dirs.

Also, is there a chance that u can make a hard copy of the files and use
them to rebuild the servers in case of a hd crash or a os upgrade?
While the hlds download is very good-it can be time consuming.

 Hey everyone!

I have a small private Left 4 Dead server running for quite some time
now, but I never really managed to get it recognized as a group server
 by the matchmaking system.
Everything works fine if I connect through the console/server-browser,
but I'd really like it to be available through the 'Play on Group
 Server'-menu as well.

Unfortunately, the official documentation (afaik) does not cover this
topic. I checked both the Steam-Forums and Google as well, but apart
from the usual 'Group Servers are broken'-rants, I could not find any
 useful information.
Right now I'm having a hard time diagnosing the problem, since neither
the server nor the client are very forthcoming in terms of debug
 messages regarding this issue.

Any nudge in the right direction would be highly appreciated. I attached
my config and a copy of the startup log further down.

 Thanks for your help

i am getting some errors while running no mercy2 but i dont think it is

[hlds_linux] TF2 Rcon fail after last update

2010-01-30 Thread Tom Grant
Hey guys, since the last update I haven't been able to get RCON working.
I've restarted the servers a few times, my ports are forwarded and all that.
In game I get this: Lost RCON connection, please retry command (UNKNOWN
ERROR)
HLSW just fails.

When try to RCON in game, the server gets the command and will execute them,
but I still get the error in my console. Like a status command won't give
the results, however I am able to say turn friendly fire on via RCON.

Re: [hlds_linux] sv_pure...cheat?

2010-01-21 Thread Tom Leighton
Well no, it doesn't disable VAC at all, aimbots, speedhacks, etc, can
still not be used since VAC will still catch these. Material wallhacks
(the last time that I tested one out anyway) are pretty naff, and people
show themselves up by shooting through walls when they think someone is
in front of them (since there is effectively no distance telltale).

Donnie Newlove wrote:
EXE ones type of hacks has a chance to be caught by VAC, material
hacks does not. Using sv_pure 0 effectively disables VAC since that
means wallhacks can be used at absolutely no risk of ever getting VAC

For the sv_pure talk, i just have to say this. We ran sv_pure 1 for a

the exe ones that will draw wireframe even if pure is on. Sv_pure is
pretty much useless in my opinion.

 How is that possible?

players on your server, run this.

Re: [hlds_linux] Post by non-member to a members-only list

2009-12-30 Thread Tom Leighton
What I mean is, is your email address EXACTLY oliversalzb...@web.de?

I'm using the same address the list sends to.

What email does the list send stuff to?

When I signed up for these lists, i used @gmail.com instead of
@googlemail.com. Of course it complained when I sent an email and it was
 different to my subscribed address.

 That's exactly my point.
Just this one mail I am trying to send (tried twice) results
 in the above mentioned error.

I keep getting a mail saying:
Your message to hlds awaits moderator approval

   Post by non-member to a members-only list

I don't get it. How am I not a member of the list anymore?
Especially since I had sent other mails that were posted just fine.
