We have released an update to the beta. This update fixes the
STEAM_ID_PENDING bug seen in the last update in HL1 based game servers.
Run the hldsupdatetool with the -beta swapbeta parameter to get it.

This will go public tomorrow if testing from beta users is successful.

attempts to fix the CPU usage spikes some people have seen
 (feedback on this please).
Run the hldsupdatetool with the -beta swapbeta parameter to get
 it.

RE: [hlds_linux] Source and HL1 dedicated server Beta available

2006-03-01 Thread Alfred Reynolds
We have released an update to the beta. This release fixes the Got
Steam2 authentication response for unknown user error that caused users
to be unable to connect.

Run the hldsupdatetool with the -beta swapbeta parameter to get it.

This release fixes the last of the bugs that I know of in this beta,
this will be made public later this week or early next week if no
problems show up (so please test it!).

Yup, we have all the information we need about this beta bug. Other work items
have pulled me away from the beta, I don't know when I will be able to next
update it. On a happy note, once this bug if fixes all the major issued for the
beta have been resolved and it would be time to make it public for everyone.

Re: SV: [hlds_linux] Source and HL1 dedicated server Beta available

2006-02-15 Thread Saint K.

Not to sound rude, but could you hurry a bit on the steam validation bug?
Cause servers are now staying totally empty cause of that bug, and we need
to give them hard resets in order for people to be able to play again.
Normally we have around 10.000 connections a day to our servers, with this
bug it has dropped to 6000.

Yup, we have all the information we need about this beta bug. Other work
items have pulled me away from the beta, I don't know when I will be able to
next update it. On a happy note, once this bug if fixes all the major issued
for the beta have been resolved and it would be time to make it public for
everyone.

We have released an update for the beta. This release fixes the
secure/insecure problems people have been having on AMD CPU's and
attempts to fix the CPU usage spikes some people have seen (feedback
on this please). Run the hldsupdatetool with the -beta swapbeta
parameter to get it.

feedback, it really helps track down these problems.

A couple of users in an initial test reported a server hang and
associated assert (pipes.cpp line 298), if you see this please
send me your OS configuration and hardware.

server2, currently 600 players passed by today. Server is using 106MB of memory.

INTEL server (using hlds_i686):

Well, i see a big difference. In my opinion there is something with the i686

Lets reply on my own info again...

Have been running 3 servers with the swapbeta version for about half a
day now. The two AMD servers are each using a steady 80-90MB of memory
and together about 30% of the serverload. Which is nice. Both run
metamod 1.19beta. One of the servers had about 250 connects now.

The third server, running on an Intel machine, also had about 250 players.
And is also running metamod 1.19b. Almost similar setup. (only one
different map). But this server is using way more memory. Currently
running with 132MB of memory and slowly increasing. (which is the
highest amount of all servers running on that machine. I don't see any
spectacular CPU usages, so thats fine. But i find the steady growing
use of memory alarming. The other servers (running non-swapbeta) are
using around 95-105MB of memory. Which is higher compared to the AMD
servers, but they have extra plugins. So that's explainable.

Alfred, can you take a look at the Intel binaries? It looks like some
sort of memory leak. I'm using the i686 binary on that server. Maybe
someone else can give reports about the i486 binaries.

Have been running the servers for about half a day now. The AMD
servers run fine. No problems, and low CPU (35% at with 16 players)
and Memory usage (around 100mb). However the hlds on the Intel server
is using a lot more memory. With the same amount of users (and
default maps) it is using around 160mb of memory. I'm still trying to
find out why it is using more memory.
The problem may also lie in metamod. The AMD servers are currently
using a beta version of 1.19 (non-P), and the Intel server is running
 a release of
1.18 (P-version). Tomorrow I will try running the Intel version with
 1.19 too. To be continued.

Have been running the servers for about half a day now. The AMD servers
run
fine. No problems, and low CPU (35% at with 16 players) and Memory usage
(around 100mb). However the hlds on the Intel server is using a lot more
memory. With the same amount of users (and default maps) it is using
around
160mb of memory. I'm still trying to find out why it is using more memory.
The problem may also lie in metamod. The AMD servers are currently using a
beta version of 1.19 (non-P), and the Intel server is running a release of
1.18 (P-version). Tomorrow I will try running the Intel version with 1.19

We have released an update for the beta. This release fixes the
secure/insecure problems people have been having on AMD CPU's and
attempts to fix the CPU usage spikes some people have seen (feedback on
this please).
Run the hldsupdatetool with the -beta swapbeta parameter to get it.

This beta fixes the steam id swapping problem amongst other small
fixes. You can apply the beta by running the hldsupdatetool and
adding -beta swapbeta to the command line.

A couple of users in an initial test reported a server hang and
associated assert (pipes.cpp line 298), if you see this please send

Re: [hlds_linux] Source and HL1 dedicated server Beta available

2006-02-11 Thread Vincent H.

I found the problem.

I use script to launch server easily. And next another script which use
renice command to define a new priority on hlds processus. ( -20 )
And so I can see the same issue CPU usage spikes.

Very strange. Before this update there are no problems with renice
command. I've tried different values and it's the same way.
Finally i've desactived this script and now the server seems to work great.

-_- Sorry for waste your time.

Hi,

We run a Couter-strike 1.6 decicated linux Server, some Details:

Using renice -20 on nearly any long-running process is simply asking
for it, it basically keeps anything else on the system from running
while that process is active and tying up resources.

Last info update of today:

AMD servers (using hlds_amd):
server1, currently 500 players passed by today. Server is using 90MB of

server2, currently 600 players passed by today. Server is using 106MB of
memory.

INTEL server (using hlds_i686):
server3, currently 750 players passed by today. Server is using 164MB of

Well, i see a big difference. In my opinion there is something with the i686

Lets reply on my own info again...

Have been running 3 servers with the swapbeta version for about half a day
now. The two AMD servers are each using a steady 80-90MB of memory and
together about 30% of the serverload. Which is nice. Both run metamod
1.19beta. One of the servers had about 250 connects now.

The third server, running on an Intel machine, also had about 250 players.
And is also running metamod 1.19b. Almost similar setup. (only one
different
map). But this server is using way more memory. Currently running with
132MB
of memory and slowly increasing. (which is the highest amount of all
servers
running on that machine. I don't see any spectacular CPU usages, so thats
fine. But i find the steady growing use of memory alarming. The other
servers (running non-swapbeta) are using around 95-105MB of memory. Which
is
higher compared to the AMD servers, but they have extra plugins. So that's
explainable.

Alfred, can you take a look at the Intel binaries? It looks like some sort
of memory leak. I'm using the i686 binary on that server. Maybe someone
else
can give reports about the i486 binaries.

A couple of users in an initial test reported a server hang and
associated assert (pipes.cpp line 298), if you see this please send

Have been running the servers for about half a day now. The AMD servers run
fine. No problems, and low CPU (35% at with 16 players) and Memory usage
(around 100mb). However the hlds on the Intel server is using a lot more
memory. With the same amount of users (and default maps) it is using around
160mb of memory. I'm still trying to find out why it is using more memory.
The problem may also lie in metamod. The AMD servers are currently using a beta
version of 1.19 (non-P), and the Intel server is running a release of
1.18 (P-version). Tomorrow I will try running the Intel version with 1.19 too.
To be continued.

Hi,

We run a Couter-strike 1.6 decicated linux Server, some Details:

[*] Amd Sempron 2500+ ;
[*] 512 ram ;
[*] OS: Debian Sarge ;
[*] Kernel : Linux 2.6.8-2-386
[*] Glibc : Release stable, Version 2.3.5
[*] 16 Slots ;

Also:
[*] Metamod 1.18p26 + Amx2005 ;
[*] VAC + SteamBan activated.

I've applied v.33 update, and with stats command ( without players in
the server), we have :

CPU InOut Uptime Users FPSPlayers
99.90 0.00 0.00 0 0 166.67 0

Also : 06:38:27 up 7:34, 1 user, load average: 2,64, 1,15, 0,43

It seems to have no errors. Once server started there are a CPU usage

So i've rollback to v.29.: /

Thank in advance. :)

Alfred,

I'm still getting the following error during the startup process:

net.cpp (896) : Assertion Failed: 0 == iRet
net.cpp (899) : Assertion Failed: 0 == iRet

I don't know if it can cause problems. It looks like the server is running
fine. This error is already an old one. It has been in a few releases now,
but so far hasn't caused problems. I'm running FreeBSD 4.11-STABLE. Anyone

Thx Alfred! Hope it works, at least it starts ;)

BTW: STEAM ID PENDING bug is still present with latest swapbeta!
I got one user that had STEAM ID PENDING:
   bleiti326STEAM_ID_PENDING

Yeah well the thing is. Without the swapbeta that pending would have
mixed up the next map's player IDs.. I know which bug I'd rather have
  ;)

In many cases, players who do not get a validated STEAMID are playing with a
hacked client. (no cd key = no steamid)

BTW: Normally he had a Steam ID! Only one it stayed at STEAM ID PENDING...

I only wanted to mention it. I know that it's better than a mixed one :)

Make sure that the command hostname -i returns the PUBLIC IP address
of your server and not the loopback address. If it returns the loopback
then your server will not be allowed to go secure.

Completely unrelated, I want to mention that it's very cool and
surprising to see a paid employee answering mail on a help list at

I agree. It's also a pretty damn quick response to the performance
issue (which I think is the only one preventing a full server farm
rollout of the beta).

With regards to the AMD problem though. The hostname thing may be the
problem. But why would the i486 binary work for these people (well I
say people, only 1 person replied that the i486 worked fine) with VAC
and the AMD not?

seen any problems so far today (and both processes on the tets server
have been busy for quite some hours now)

FPS is between 95-115 which is what I'd expect ;)

engine_i686 works great on my Pentum Presscot server. VAC loads, CPU usage
is normal (maybe few % bigger than in v3213 built) but runs stable.

I've never seen this happen. I have seen the 'bug' cause of the
problem many a time and could even explain exactly how/why it happens
(although you'd need damn good timing to reproduce it to order). In
fact it was the same trigger for this as was the skewed steam ID
problem we just had.

If you'd like to be bored to tears I could explain it from start to finish. :P

[hlds_linux] Source and HL1 dedicated server Beta available

2006-02-02 Thread Alfred Reynolds
We have released an update to the beta, run the hldsupdatetool again
with the -beta swapbeta parameter to get it.

The update fixes the pipes assert, a crash on startup for dual-proc
machines and some in game stalls. Thanks to everyone that gave us
feedback, it really helps track down these problems.

Re: [hlds_linux] Source and HL1 dedicated server Beta available

2006-02-02 Thread WhiskyHornan
Just out of curiosity, are you running an Amd or Intel cpu on your server?

My Intel starts up fine with VAC, but my Amd just totally refuse to start up
with VAC and it doesn't enter secure-mode for all the time it's up.

The only difference is the cpu, same os on both and same connection to the
Internet. Tried with both -sport stated and not, used a lot of different
ports to.

Silly question. You are specifying a -sport? Something like +1 from
 the +port argument should work.

The piece of log above comes from an intel server. As you can see, that

Maybe a bug in the amd binaries?

We have a beta release available for both the Source and HL1 engine.
This beta fixes the steam id swapping problem amongst other small fixes.
You can apply the beta by running the hldsupdatetool and adding -beta
swapbeta to the command line.

A couple of users in an initial test reported a server hang and
associated assert (pipes.cpp line 298), if you see this please send me
your OS configuration and hardware.

Re: [hlds_linux] Source and HL1 dedicated server Beta available

2006-02-01 Thread W0kk3L

Alfred,

I'm currently running the beta version and the current version next to
eachother on one server. Too bad i'm still not seeing any difference in
performance. The performance has decreased dramaticly since november. CPU
load is way higher, and the server is running out of memory very often
(which wasn't happening before). I used to run 3 hlds instances on this
machine, without problems, but since november it's only possible to run 2
and barely lagfree.

I was hoping that the next release would fix those performance drops, but
too bad it isn't. There are already many topics about these problems in this
mailinglist. Is there any news when this is going to be fixed?

Re: [hlds_linux] Source and HL1 dedicated server Beta available

2006-02-01 Thread Kyle Lutze

alfred:
is it possible to add a debug mode or verbose so people can get logs
with more information when it does crash?

I would be running my server and helping test but I'm currently trying
to redo it.

It loads ok on a 1.6 server I tried out - flat out at the moment but
I'll make a point of testing a Source server tomorrow.

A couple of users in an initial test reported a server hang and
associated assert (pipes.cpp line 298), if you see this please send me
your OS configuration and hardware.

If it's same as what we got. If you run the hlds in a console when it
happens you'll find hlds locks for 1 minute (exactly) and you'll get
the Assertion error Alfred mentions. When it comes back after the 1
minute everyone will have timed out.

It seems to be to do with linux setup rather than hardware though.

On the whole batch of servers this happens (various hardware
configurations, all same distribution). So far I've been running it on
my own dedicated server similar hardware, different linux
distribution. And it's working fine.
