Re: [hlds_linux] Update several hours ago

It was just SteamVR stuff that may make 0 byte updates appear for the
HL2 series of games and the Source 2013 SDK if either of those are also
installed (but SteamVR itself isn't). There was nothing of note for
server owners, however.

Yes there is if he has tf_server_identity_account_id set correctly. Item
server has been down for the past weekend time to time and loadouts
unavailable. I haven't paid attention if my servers are logged in or not
but that message appears even if the account id is set and the server is
unable to log in.

You're right, that's a bug. Maybe they'll add the language menu in
Steam, but the language works in HL2:DM even without that.

You could also just use "find @" inside of steamcmd to get all cvars
containing an @-sign (not all of them do, though).

Or you might want to use (Warning: shameless self-plug ahead) this handy
little wrapper script which provides tab-completion to browse through the
available commands: https://github.com/dirkd/steamsh

2013-05-13 Thread Winnie the Pooh
-steamcmd_script /home/srcds/pipe/steamcmd.sh is the problem. You should
create a new text file with the commands your would put in a +runscript
file:

@ShutdownOnFailedCommand 1
@NoPromptForPassword 1
login anonymous
force_install_dir /home/srcds/pipe/tf2
app_update 232250
quit

If you put the above in /home/srcds/pipe/runscript_tf2.txt you would launch
with -steamcmd_script /home/srcds/pipe/runscript_tf2.txt

Re: [hlds_linux] Update on RO2 Linux Servers

2011-08-30 Thread doc
I'm not going to be super hard on them, it's only a beta right now -
I'm sure down the line they will have some Linux servers. My
dissapointment is more along the lines that we won't be ironing out
any weird Linux-only bugs during the beta.

perfect example :)

And I think Brink is also another very nice example of multiplayer game
that didn't want to release Linux server binaries... :)

Long live TF2 and every other game supporting linux ;)

2011-08-29 Thread Jay Singh

Your link counts web hosts. I'm talking about game server hosts which is mainly
who John Gibson is looking for to host beta servers.

Re: [hlds_linux] Update on RO2 Linux Servers

2011-08-29 Thread bottige...@gmail.com
That is false by every study known. Here is an example
http://w3techs.com/technologies/overview/operating_system/all

The main motivation for game programmers not to make Linux servers is
because they don't feel like programming on Linux when they are much
more comfortable on Windows since that's where the client is made.

I am not planning to run any RO2 servers, but I will say this. Forcing
your hosts to pay for the Windows license will only mean less money
for the rest of the server.

Most of gsp have their custom webpanel to manage them or use commercial
ones(gamecp, etc) so no need of vnc, but most use linux because of security.

Very much so most servers are hosted on linux for many reasons.

Not having the option for that will not be the best idea.

Re: [hlds_linux] Update on RO2 Linux Servers

2011-08-29 Thread Andre Pozos

Hi:

First of all ,thanks for you work and gaming community support!

My 2 cents:

Knowing thay 80% game servers are hosted in linux i dont think thats the
right step to spread ro2 servers around the world.

Best regards

First let me get this out of the way - for all of you that e-mailed me about
hosting servers for the beta/RO2 and never got a response, I apologize. I
thought I would get a couple dozen requests but in reality I got hundreds of
e-mails and got overwhelmed. So if you didn't get a response from me I'm
sorry but we underestimated the interest from server hosts (but I am happy
you guys are interested).

I'm sorry to say but we've made the decision to hold off on having Linux
servers for RO2, at least for the initial launch. We will be looking at the
possibility of putting out a Linux server version post launch depending on
what the level of demand there is for them. We appreciate the great support
the Linux server admins have given Tripwire Interactive and our games over
the years so thank you again.

Regards,

John Gibson
President
Tripwire Interactive

Then, save this shell script, edit appropriately (minalertinterval,
path to srcupdatecheck, path to steam.inf and action when an update is
available), and call with parameter L4D, L4D2 or TF2 (I run it in
crontab)

I run a small SMS alerter when theres an update, but you could run
sendmail, send an SNMP trap or whatever suits your fancy :)

Re: [hlds_linux] Update notifiction

2011-06-29 Thread Andrew Armstrong
You can subscribe to hlds_announce list (Google) if you don't want the
regular list traffic too.

You want to look at using a game panel like TCAdmin/GameCreate/etc that can
distribute the update to multiple servers at once after downloading it the
first time.

Something like that would be nice. I'm considering doing it like
"Mr.Firefox". Start a server and check the output for the standard
update message.

What i did was create a filter in my mail with this address (

What will happen is when jason post on this mailing, i then get an e-mail

A required update for Left 4 Dead has been released.  Please run
hldsupdatetool to receive the update.  The specific changes include:

 - A new campaign, "Crash Course", is now available for play in Campaign,
 Versus and Survival modes
 - In Versus mode, all weapons, pills, health packs, molotovs, pipe bombs
and other items will now be identical for the second round of a chapter
 - Matchmaking has had several improvements to make finding and joining
 games even faster
 - Ten all new "Crash Course" achievements have been added

2009-09-29 Thread David A. Parker
I get this on Debian Lenny (amd64):

Auto detecting CPU
Using SSE2 Optimised binary.
Enabling debug mode
Server will auto-restart if there is a crash.
Could not locate steam binary:./steam, ignoring.
Running a benchmark to measure system clock frequency...
Finished RDTSC test. To prevent the startup delay from this benchmark,
set the environment variable RDTSC_FREQUENCY to 2327.00 on this
system. This value is dependent upon the CPU clock speed and
architecture and should be determined separately for each server. The
use of this mechanism for timing can be disabled by setting
RDTSC_FREQUENCY to 'disabled'.

0.04% ./l4d\left4dead\addons\readme.txt
0.23% ./l4d\left4dead\bin\matchmaking.dll
0.37% ./l4d\left4dead\bin\matchmaking_ds.dll

16.49% ./l4d\left4dead\maps\soundcache\tutorial_standards.manifest
29.05% ./l4d\left4dead\maps\l4d_garage01_alleys.bsp

Of course, this update has been running for over 40 minutes now and
that's as far as I've gotten.

I had the same issues. Keep running the updater several times until it
stops giving you more content. The problem seems to be that it's not
grabbing everything at once like it's supposed to. I presume that's due
to Valve server-side issues.

Re: [hlds_linux] Update not working on Linux servers Was: Left 4 Dead Update Available

2009-09-29 Thread James Gurney
I'm getting core dumped here. Emailed the debug log as it requested,
but it doesn't look exactly useful:

CRASH: Tue Sep 29 11:56:59 PDT 2009

+map l4d_hospital01_apartment

No symbol table info available.
End of Source crash report

Valve folks.. I can provide ssh access to debug this further if required.

Re: [hlds_linux] Update not working on Linux servers Was: Left 4 Dead Update Available

2009-09-29 Thread ics
Well, my servers seem to dowload only some exe and dll files, no so's.
Did someone forgot to include linux compatible binaries? Then again, i'm
still on 11% ready but might have something to do with your servers not
going online.. :)

Re: [hlds_linux] Update coming for SteamID change [OFFTOPIC]

2009-02-18 Thread Ben
But since the membership of this list doesn't require you to be someone
who runs servers, information that is posted on this list by Valve makes
it way into gaming news sites and other various places, so information
posted here isn't exclusive to this list.

The gaming populace is not so smart, and like to go off on tangents
about things.

I understand the point you are trying to make but I just don't buy into
that. I believe that most admins on this list are smart enough to know
that fixes don't magically appear. Even more so since this is the
hlds_LINUX list! Do people who use bugzilla or any other means to
report bugs on other projects expect a fix in the next hour? I doubt
it. We're smart, if they explain to us, we'll understand.

Regardless, Valve's lack of bidirectional communication with the admin
community is more likely a result of a lack of resources or time than
a conscious effort to ignore and annoys us in the hope of not crushing
our dreams regarding the next patch.

Re: [hlds_linux] Update coming for SteamID change

2009-02-17 Thread Ben
The reason why Valve don't reply with information all the time is all
about managing expectations. Its often much better to say nothing at
all until the problem is resolved, so then you're not having to deal
with the expectations that saying something brings with it. If Valve
were to say "yes, we're currently working on it", most people would
assume the fix would be out in days, whereas there could be
complications that arise that may mean a fix takes weeks (or longer) due
to issues that are only known to Valve, whereas the public assumption
would be that it was a simple fix.

Its pretty much a situation of damned if you do, and damned if you don't.

When it comes down to it, this problem with the server segfaulting on
start-up isn't a total show stopper as the server does eventually start,
its more of an annoyance for server admins if anything right now.

Re: [hlds_linux] Update coming for SteamID change

2009-02-17 Thread AusNet Servers Server Administrators
I have to agree with this... especially the bandwidth and hardware points...
if no-one hosts Steam servers, Valve would be in the crapper..

I'm fortunate enough to have all my bans located on a notepad document so it
was fairly simple to swap all bans over... and well, I have a total of 4
admins (of which 2 are in MySQL with ID's)

I feel sorry for those US hosting companies which have 1000 admins, and
1+ bans... it would be quite painful.

disproportionate number of complaints there.

I'm not saying all of the posts are good; just that there are a lot of

Chris Green emailed me about it and I gave him SSH info to a server, but
have never heard back from him since the initial email.

So I don't think its a lack of reproducibility of the error. Its just
they are in Washington, the land of Microsoft, so Linux takes a back
seat. ;-)

This update was just released.

Updates to the Orange Box Engine have been released. The updates will be
applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The specific
changes include:

Orange Box Engine

* Updated the engine to report SteamIDs using the Steam_0 format instead
of Steam_1
* Fixed problems in Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Portal, and Source mods
running the current Orange Box engine
* Reverted the change that capped rate at 3

Thanks Valve!

Or, I'm worried that the optional update will be "required" in the sense
that if you don't update people can't connect because of differing steam
ticket (same thing that happens if you try to connect to an unupdated server

Jason, the main problem with what you at Valve call "optional update" is
that if the update is not done, servers are not listed anymore in the client
server list. This problem only affect the Orangebox Engine.

Re: [hlds_linux] update

2008-06-28 Thread Kevin Ottalini
That "event" in the graph might be a glitch - it's showing 0 players on for
almost 2 hours.

I know I had several client logged on and in games all through that time and
lots of players were on my servers then too.

I don't doubt there was some problem but that graph can't be correct,
perhaps the machine doing the logging needed a reboot too.

It's unfortunate that the error message and disconnect for the individual
ticket problem is the same as when the system-wide problem happens, it
always seems to take a while to make sure it's not just the client.

Re: [hlds_linux] update

2008-06-27 Thread Guy Watkins
I deleted ClientRegistry.blob. That did not work.
However, steam seemed to update. At least it went through the motions.
But it did not help.

I did restart steam twice before that and it did not update.

:(

I guess I will play Supreme Commander.

Re: [hlds_linux] update

I did this:
Steam > settings (account) > login as a different user

I lasted 2-3 minutes.

Is the above the same as restarting steam?
In the past I only needed to restart steam. Still a pain in the @$$.

My firewall/router config has not changed. My server is behind the same
firewall as my PC. Had this server for about 3.5 years now. So I don't
think it is the firewall/router or the server.

Thanks.

Re: [hlds_linux] update

2008-06-27 Thread Kevin Ottalini
There are several situations where "no steam logon" can happen (that I know
of).

If it happens to one player only, this usually means he needs to log out of
steam and log back in to renew his ticket.

Steam > settings (account) > login as a different user
then log back into your account to renew your ticket.

This will happen every few weeks, sometimes earlier when there is a update.

If it happens to a number of players on several servers this means the
clients are having problems talking to Steam and may indicate one of the
Steam servers need to be kicked (gently).

This can also happen if Valve is working on Steam or updating things.

If it happens to all clients connecting to only one server then there is a
chance that the server has the steam master ports blocked off (IPtable or
firewall).

Re: [hlds_linux] update

2008-06-27 Thread Faustas Buškevičius
Well Jason said in the last update notification something was fixed
with the Russian fonts. In software development usually what happens
is that you release a version of something, and then update that
release, occasionally just a few minutes(hours? days ? this is VALVe)
later. Since the font file was the only one updated this time, I
would classify this as "one of those cases". What I mean is if they
only fixed the way one of the many Cyrillic characters was being
drawn, is there really a point to publish "release notes" ?
Pardon my language, I'm drunk.
