[IceHorses] Re:Side saddle
Finding a sidesaddle that fits a widebacked Icelandic was extremely challenging. You definitely don't want to get one off of ebay. Most sidesaddles you find online are older sidesaddles built for horses from long ago when they were much narrower than today's horses. Or...you may find a saddle that is not balanced or even downright dangerous. Fit is even more crucial for a sidesaddle than an astride saddle. I know, I know - fit is important for any saddle, but with an aside saddle, slippage can be a real problem. It took less than five minutes for my gelding to get used to a sidesaddle. Not having any leg on the offside was the only issue - he wasn't sure that I meant go forward when I was just using my left leg. After we worked that out - it was great. What was really interesting was how easy we could do our leg yields and side passing. I think that was because my posture and seat bones were all in a good position. Your hips need to be pointing straightforward when you ride. Do a google search for Marti and Hundred Oaks. This is where I bought my sidesaddle. Marti is extremely helpful. I bought an Elan which is an english style saddle that Marti has made to her specification in Pakistan. I had to buy and XX wide. Marti said that it was the widest sidesaddle she had ever seen in her life. Learning to ride in a sidesaddle is not that difficult - you do feel pretty secure with the two horns and it does wonders for your posture. I am much more fearful of trying to figure out how to sew one of those sidesaddle aprons that the aside ladies wear. They use aprons instead of skirts. I bought a pattern for the apron and I am terrified of even pulling it out of the package. I haven't sewed anything since 7th grade Home Ec. Cindy

Hi All: Dana Johnsen has said many , many times to all of us dealers that it is not a good idea to ride free swing for any length of time because of the decreased ability to spread the weight of the stirrups the rider. Hard use OR endurance leathers is the way the saddle was best designed according to Dana in order to maximize comfort for the horse. For those who choose to ride free swing in the Sensation, Dana has told me more times than I would like to count that you do so at your horse's risk. As more people are using the Sensations for longer periods of time or jumping, Dana has had reports of issues developing under the butterfly using free swing for longer ride times/frequent riding on the same horse. As Karen Thomas mentioned, a lot is dependant on the rider biomechanics. I'm sure it is possible for those of you riding shorter/infrequent times on different horses, with good rider balance to be ok, but those are a lot of variables. Why tempt fate when Dana has done extensive testing on the way it was designed to be used. I'm sure Melissa or Dana would be happy to explain to those want further info on this. Call her direct in Canada on this subject. Kaaren

But I dont seem to be able to ever feel part of the horse like I do with other treed saddles. I have never brought this up because i felt it would draw criticism of the sensation or other treeless saddles and its not the saddle, its ME. I cant ever feel secure in a dressage saddle either because the stirrups are too free moving. I suspect it has something to do with the way I use my feet in the stirrups when going? but in my orthoflex I just hold on with my legs and feel actually a part of the horse. Teev is very very in tune with ME and whenever I get wobbly he immediately drops back down into a walk. I guess you could say he is taking care of me but more likely us since my sudden lurching could make him go off balance. The other day when trotting fast and about to canter and going up a slight long incline hill I stood in the stirrups and grabbed mane like my CTR friend says to do, swayed a little to the side and he immediately dropped into a walk, sensing I was losing balance. In my orthoflex on Jaspar he can canter up a hill and go around a hairpin and i am part of him, stonewall too. and in my bona allen saddle too. but in the sensation there is enough give and plushness to it that i havent yet gotten the hang of balancing at speed or with sudden turns. altho the fixed stirrups are a huge improvement. Tivar is not spooky so its ok, but Fox needs a wide tree and I would like to ride him in the sensation but i am nervous when i do because he is basically green and when I had my bad fall off stonewall it was in the trail sensation. In a message dated 12/4/2007 7:22:19 AM Pacific Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] (mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]) Yes, I have to agree, people that made it through the fires here now are going to have to survive the mud slides. I was talking to a lady that works over at the Senior Center, I did volunteer with, yesterday. I asked how the seniors made it through the fires and she said many lost their homes. One of the ladies that did not burn had her house disappear the other night under a mud slide, gone. I personally live on a granite hill and it has not moved ever. The people that are in cut our areas that their pads have been built up are in real trouble. The more water we get the worse it will be for those that live in the bare areas that lost trees and scrub. It looks like a moon scape here, bare black hills everywhere with sticks that used to be trees. I think global warming is evolutionary and we are not at the end times its just ongoing. My opinion, that will start a thread. Sylvia **Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products. (http://money.aol.com/special/hot-products-2007?NCID=aoltop000301)

Find your Lasso Tool and use it along the edges of the head. There's a start and a finish and those ends need to be connected to stop the tool and end up with your desired image. Copy this to your clipboard. Go to the main photo, and paste the head on this picture. You should be able to move the head into position. it is time for us to do something GOOD you guys!! I am thinking of all the money spent on things this time of year, christmas candy, cakes and pies and donuts and for excesses we are all so fortunate to have... but a woman lives down the street from me who has three children under age ten and lives in one of those old egg shaped camper trailers with a generator and a childs playhouse attached to the front to add an extra room. I also know someone whose husband just left her, she has four kids and a horse and we have been giving her hay when we can but i know she is in a struggle to make ends meet and it would be nice to do something for her children. I know many of you, all of you, must be aware of similar situations!! I also know Judy tried in the past to set up an iceryder pajama fund where we send money or pajamas to be delivered to needy children, children who may not even have pajamas. I know the ones down the street from me dont, at least not good ones, because one morning I passed by and saw the children outside in their underwear and it was really early. Could we set up a way Judy, to send donations to iceryder or send actual pajamas for the Oprah pajama fund? I am taking gift baskets and pajamas to the needy people i just mentioned and i was thinking of having Tivar deliver them and take pics so when we give the money and pajamas we have collected to the oprah fund we can all send with it pics of our icelandics delivering pajamas to kids... can we set something like this up Judy? It is really stupid for me to spend money on donuts and candy this time of year when so much good could be done. janice -- yipie tie yie yo

In my orthoflex on Jaspar he can canter up a hill and go around a hairpin and i am part of him, stonewall too. i am nervous when i do because he is basically green and when I had my bad fall off stonewall it was in the trail sensation. (he whirled) Janice, I share the same problem, when I got hurt it was my draft and he would counter canter and over extend his back end in canter, both problems as well as drop his head to propell his front end into trot as drafts when being trained in saddle are not very strong in the rear for collection, not that they don't get that way but they are very wobbly when getting started and I was not the best at balance with his gaits and got hurt pretty bad. I do not ride him in a treeless as I don't ride him as much as the 3 iceys who even at trot are very easy to be more of a passenger than a rider, even my green icey is easier than my draft. I have to ride a trot at least 5-10 minutes to get into rhythm with his so I can post, and finally, he has a little wither so I can keep the saddle centered if it is treed I find myself tipping sideways even a little, and I make him lead on trail rides to get him less spooky instead of mindlessly following, seems to decrease his adrenaline reaction to anything we run across on trails if it is just his response rather than all the horses around his field of vision. I don't take him away on large groupings to ride as I can't always keep his attention and he does bolt when afraid, not pleasant. I will eventually take him to these kinds of rides but he is now 7 and this is the first year I can tell he is maturing and learning, so I can get him to hear me when I am on him. Then icelandics are so smooth that I don't have to work as hard when I ride and I like the way I feel them under the treeless, I use the Torsion. My iceys are witherless, I call them sausages with legs, and if they make sudden change in direction I have to grab mane, to recenter or potentially go off, which I have plenty of times when wildlife pops up and we are going too fast for my legs to hold on. I also put too much pressure in my stirrups when I ride and need to do more of what Karen mentioned about riding the faster gaits without stirrups in my ring until I find a better seat, I have been just so relaxed at riding with friends that I don't spend time improving myself, I become a passenger on my horses way more than I should and don't do them justice carrying my big rear around without working on this. None of my friends ride treeless and it is because they say it isn't secure enough for them, won't even try it when I have made the offer. I think they have felt the same insecurity that I have on my draft and they don't want to lose that control or the appearance of it. Jeannette

I have never brought this up because i felt it would draw criticism of the sensation or other treeless saddles and its not the saddle, its ME. a couple suggestions, not to do with saddles but exercises i've found that help with this sort of feeling: . try using a neck strap, esp. at the trot where your horse's head is stable, to stabilize your hands. sometimes that's all it takes, is a steady point of reference you can touch or hang on to :) . (this is harder but a *fantastic* exercise) go up in half seat, and starting at slow trot, let your bum move from side to side as if you had a tail to wag with each stride your horse takes. this will put you in a purposeful, controlled wobble just in time with the sway in your horse's stride. then try a faster trot and see if it helps -- sometimes i put myself into half seat for just a few strides to get it at fast trot, and can then return to posting -- i can't sit stjarni's fast trot at all :) . half-seat at canter -- again, let your seat bob (more than wobble, it's the nature of the canter to be more back-and-forth, rocking-horse style) while you rest your hands on the withers or hold a neck strap. try just a few strides at first. i found this really helps! the half-seat exercises especially will tend to set your lower leg properly and securely in the stirrups. it's not standing up in the stirrups -- as your front comes forward, your behind goes backwards, so your upper body's center of gravity remains directly above your heels. (there's a terrific illustration of this in centered riding, and this is i think why what i call half seat is also called two point, though i've heard other derivations for that term too.) i and my students have all tried all of these in the sensation (back when we were using the first one) and they really helped. good luck to you with yours! hope this helps, --vicka

[IceHorses] tobiano test
not sure what this means... since there has been a tobiano test for years I think this must mean there is now a test for homozygous tobiano? Janice Tobiano Gene Discoveries Mean Better Tests by: Erin Ryder, TheHorse.com News Editor December 01 2007, Article # 10914 Looking to breed for spots and have certainty about it? Breeders trying to produce horses with tobiano coloring have a new tool, available through genetic research, to help them select their breeding stock. Tobiano is a common spotting pattern in horses, but up until this point the available tests to determine whether a horse could pass this pattern on to offspring weren't always accurate. Samantha Brooks, PhD, postdoctoral fellow at the University of Kentucky's Gluck Equine Research Center, recently completed a project that will result in an accurate test for this pattern. Brooks looked at the chromosomes of tobiano horses and discovered a large rearrangement of the genes thought to be involved in the production of pigment. We've designed a DNA-based test that will enable us to look for this chromosome inversion and, therefore, predict which horses are going to have two copies of tobiano--known as homozygous--and are going to be true breeding, so breeders can select for animals that are going to give them the best production of spotted horses, she said. This inversion so far, from our own testing as well as that of collaborators, is 100% associated with the tobiano gene, so that means that it's going to be an excellent test. -- yipie tie yie yo

I'd be happy to give you my opinion if you e-mail me the pix I request on my site under Demo Info. para 1. Dana has told all us dealers to stress safety first that green horses/ riders who need some help in the balance dept. are best served trying the Sensation with an English Hunt Style breast plate in a smaller enclosed area until everyone feels safe. Even better yet to have a ground walker to lead you around in walk/ trot/gait if possible or at least have someone on the property nearby when you try it for stability. So many things can happen so quicky with a green horse, it's better to be safe than sorry. Treeless saddles can be more laterally unstable depending on horse/rider combo..go slowly with some help from friends , we want you safe in one piece. Us older broads (I'm 57yo this next year) dont's take the falls as easily anymore not to mentioned lost income. Kaaren

They are beautiful both inside and out. They migrated down into East Africa a few hundred years ago from the north. They seem so tall but just are skinny, we had all different heights. I feel that the Loita area in Kenya is my second home and wonder perhaps if I lived there in another life. The lions we saw up close were in game parks though there were no fences between us hiking outside the park and them. When we went through brushy areas we walked together and the Maasai were always aware. God forbid we should see a loin when I was on the donkey. [IceHorses] Any ideas on lameness????
I think this list may be the best source of information on what may have happened to my colt. Last week my daughter and I had to go to town, and it was almost dark when we got home. Needless to say, we were tired and just wanted to get the horses fed and get into the house. I have a three year old colt, Wart, on a 15 acre pasture with two mares. When I went to feed, the mares came running down the hill. Then I saw Wart running down the hill. He was running on three legs, dragging his hind leg behind him. When he got to the feeder, I had thrown in some hay and he started to eat. But he could not support any weight on that leg. I was sure he had a fracture because it dangled at the pastern. However, he did not seem to be any any pain and tried several times to put weight on it, only to have it buckle at the pastern. I called for my daughter to call the vet and hitch up the trailer. Where I live you cannot get a vet for any reason at night, you have to trailer in, about 60 miles down a mountainous road. Anyway, I wrapped his pastern into the right position so it would not flop. He just continued eating while I manipulated his pastern to get the wrap on - no sign of pain. And bless Wart's heart, he loaded on three feet, almost falling down getting into the trailer. We got to the vet about two hours later. I opened the trailer to unload, and Wart stepped out like nothing had happened - full weight on his foot, no sign of lameness. We took him inside and the vet examined him and could find nothing. We left him overnight, and in the morning, the vet called and said they could find noting wrong. They ex-rayed his pastern, hock, stifle, etc. So, $600 later, could not get him so show any sign of lameness. Either I have a magical trailer, or both my daughter and I are delusional!! Honest, we were both in tears all the way to the vet we were so sure this was a serious injury. I am still worried about Wart - kept him confined for a few days, and finally put him back on pasture. No sign of any lameness. Wart is a beautiful sweet young stallion - if anyone has any idea what may have happened, I would really appreciate hearing from you. Thanks for any ideas or suggestions - Janet Caliente, California

Janice: Emus! Now I know you're crazy! Do you know they eat minimally 1 1/2 to 2 lbs of special pellets a day? They also have to be fed those special ratite pellets, otherwise you'll get growth problems in the legs. While you're raising them you have to be very careful that they don't eat a lot of rocks and other indigestible items. They are much nicer than ostriches but can still pack a punch when they kick and they do peck at shiny objects! That said, they are cute and look like little striped tumbleweeds when they hatch. Cherie

[IceHorses] Re: white hairs on back
For you non Sensation riders, freeswing is the way traditional english leathers are attached with the ability to have a lot of swing both front back. Hard use is a Sensation innovative design that has a buckle at the base of the flap that the specially made standard Sensation stirrup leathers buckle into for maximum weight distribution engagement of the internal multi point rigging system. Your leg swing is still about 5-6 each way, but hard use your leg centered under you which can be a good thing once you get used to it if the flap is the correct length for you. Thanks Vicka for your excellent description of your experience with the different choices. Kaaren

Lots of ditch walking (up and down) helps too. Solon had this as a yearling and we did a lot of walking to help him strengthen his leg. They eventually grow out of it. [IceHorses] Holiday Greetings
Happy Holidays to Everyone, I have attached a copy of my holiday greeting card in the Photo section under 07 Holiday Greetings. I am really enjoying being a member of the group and learning a lot about Icelandics, plus other interesting topics. The card is based on a water color that I did of the geldings at Icefarm when I was taking the Centered Riding Clinic. The clinic is very worthwhile. Plus it was so much fun to go visit the horses. Whenever you came anywhere near the bachelor herd, they would stop grazing no matter where they where, and drift to your location. Within minutes you had about 15 horses just standing by the fence line waiting for some attention, any attention. I think this behavior says something about the breed. Enjoy, Pamela

RE: [IceHorses] Re: white hairs on back
As more people are using the Sensations for longer periods of time or jumping, Dana has had reports of issues developing under the butterfly using free swing for longer ride times/frequent riding on the same horse. ... I did the hunter lesson thing for 3-4 years, maybe longer - we had a jump course set up at home that we used regularly. My point is that a good rider shouldn't use their stirrups more when they jump than when they do anything else - or at least that's how I've been taught. I don't really care if people use the free-swing option or the hard-use option with their Sensations - that's their choice. But, when a 100-ish-pound rider starts complaining about that flimsy butterfly plate after only a couple of months, I have to ask questions. The questions I ask are: what saddles were used on the horse in his prior life, and how much pressure is the rider putting into their stirrups? As Karen Thomas mentioned, a lot is dependant on the rider biomechanics. I'm sure it is possible for those of you riding shorter/infrequent times on different horses, with good rider balance to be ok, but those are a lot of variables. Why tempt fate when Dana has done extensive testing on the way it was designed to be used. Kaaren, I don't know who you are talking about riding infrequently, but Cary weighs 240 pounds. Yep, two hundred and forty - over twice what some riders weigh. He's been riding in a Sensation for almost two years and he typically rides 2-3 hours, sometimes less, sometimes more. That's a lot of weight, and he's been doing it in that saddle for over a year and a half. We are PICKY about watching out for Skjoni's back. I am not recommending that people Cary's size ride with free-swinging stirrups...heck, I'm not even recommending that people his size ride in a treeless saddle, but he does, and they have had no problems. (MUCH credit to Cary for finally taking an interest in how he rides.) My point is simply that the stirrup rigging isn't so much of a factor if the rider doesn't jam all their weight in their stirrups. That's not a good habit to have in any saddle, treed or not. My big fear is that people will throw the baby out with the bath water and overlook a perfectly good saddle option because of some claims that I'm not sure are valid. I'm sure the Sensations won't be THE answer for ALL riders on ALL horses...but if it works for big old Cary, then I think that's a pretty serious endorsement - for the saddle, AND for taking a few riding lessons. It is really odd, mabye they should hire better announcers that can keep it focused on sports...the announcers could have used that time to talk about what Icelandic people have done for centuries, riding Icelandic horses, which is a sport. Based on the different blurbs for the different countries...and based on how much Iceland plays up the drinking and partying in their own ads, I suspect that Olympic blurb was approved by the Icelandic tourism industry. Most of the other countries DID have sports-related comments in their blurbs, and you'd think that a country with ice in its name would take the Winter Olympic sports at least a little seriously. Re: [IceHorses] Any ideas on lameness????
Dr, Wanda probably has the diagnosis. When we went to look at Icelandics, I loved Yrsa from first sight, but her left hind leg would lock up, then give way so violently that it bruised my thumb. I talked with the seller and we decided to have a pre-purchase done on her, I'd pay if she passed and buy her, the owner would pay if she were unsound. Well, she was just fine for the vet. He said it was patellar dislocation - there's lots on the internet. He said that he had a colt come to the clinic whose leg had been locked forl ong enough to get him in the trailer and transport him to the clinic and was now at the track. He said increased exercise, especially up and down hills would help and that she would outgrow it. Still makes me nervous. Nancy

Re: [IceHorses] Re: white hairs on back
I also did the hunter thing with many lessons, probably more like 10 or 20 years. As Karen says, at least in that discipline, and with the instructor I rode for, very little weight should be applied to the sturrups. Even now, if I feel that I am letting weight fall into my stirrups, I correct my balance. Hunter is an edgy, reactive little guy (I love him. I really do love this horse) and it took me a while to figure out that he was made anxious when my leg rested on his side. So now, not only do I not weight my stirrup, I have to let may leg fall in a really relaxed fashion so that I'm not using it to balance on his body.. The whole thing has really helped me to regain my balance in motion. I can't remember what I was doing, maybe just dropping my stirrups for a rest, and some event happened out on trail not long ago. He sort of surged forward and then took a few trot steps. I was still right in the middle when we finished. Still stirrup-less. RE: [IceHorses] help with Icies wanted/false heat
I just found out that none of my five mares, who stood for Melnir as if in heat, is pregnant. Karen called it false heat. I have never had any experience with that. With all the breeding I have done, this concept is entirely new to me. A standing heat (which is what the mares seemed to show) to me meant close to ovulation. I'm really sorry that Anneliese won't be having any little Melnirs. I was looking forward to some little (tow-headed?) babies cavorting in the paradise of Unicorn Valley... To complete the details of the story, Melnir was only there for five days, and most any vet will tell you that breeding five mares in five days is not ideal. It doesn't give much time for the sperm count to build back up between breedings. (Not that I have to worry about protecting his reputation or anything - he's a great gelding, so his reputation isn't exactly on the line here! :) ) Most vets will advise not to breed a stallion more than once a day, maybe twice. But, when they pasture breed, they breed much more often than that. I'm sure some get pregnant right off the bat anyway, but by restricting the contact, you should be able increase the odds of immediate conception. I know that 2-3 of my mares seemed to cycle immediately when I put them in with him the first year, but at least two were back standing for him a week or two later. Ultrasounds showed that the two got pregnant on the later heat. Since normal heat cycles are 21 days apart. I know the dates that Christine told me that Bjola, Brunka and Saga stood for their stallions before they came to live with us, but the ultrasounds I had done immediately upon their arrival showed they didn't conceive then, but instead all conceived right before they left Canada for NC. Anyway, I sure didn't breed that many mares, so I don't have as much experience as some others - but I have ultrasounded all my mares within 15-21 days of breeding, so I have a pretty good idea of when my pregnant mares did conceive and when they didn't. But, when a 100-ish-pound rider starts complaining about that flimsy butterfly plate after only a couple of months, I have to ask questions. The questions I ask are: what saddles were used on the horse in his prior life, and how much pressure is the rider putting into their stirrups? i've always ridden stjarni in a hrimnir x-wide treed saddle, aside from the sensations. i ride him bareback as well, and without stirrups with a saddle. i can't possibly be putting more than fifty-five pounds or so of pressure per stirrup, even if i were standing on my toes, which of course i'm not. i imagine i could jump up and down to exert more force, but in fact i have not done that either. as i mentioned earlier, his previous owner was a little girl, and presumably even lighter than i am. i do not know what saddle she used, but it was at least two years between her riding and stjarni's white hairs showing up. i think it would be quite the coincidence for the white hairs to match the butterfly-plate shape so well if there were a years-old injury involved instead. He's been riding in a Sensation for almost two years and he typically rides 2-3 hours, sometimes less, sometimes more. That's a lot of weight, and he's been doing it in that saddle for over a year and a half. how often does he ride? in the summer, stjarni will get ridden for that long more days than not. (my students have thinned out since the snows hit, to which i can only say both sillies, get icelandic riding suits and yay, more free time for me! :) stjarni also, i should mention, shows white hairs rapidly after injury (he sustains bites and kicks quite often, since he deposed the former alpha in his paddock and the former alpha doesn't like it) unless they are treated fairly aggressively. he has a patch on one flank that i can't imagine how he got, but it's quite distinct and has been there for over a year. (i haven't tried treating that; it doesn't seem to bother him.) skjoni may have less graphic skin than stjarni does. My point is simply that the stirrup rigging isn't so much of a factor if the rider doesn't jam all their weight in their stirrups. That's not a good habit to have in any saddle, treed or not. are you suggesting i do that? i doubt we'd be winning two-phases (in the sensation, yet) if i were, nor has anyone said as much any time i've posted pictures of myself or my students to the list or other equestrian communities. --vicka ps. as we say in the statistical-analysis world, anecdote is not the singular form of 'data'. i do presume that the sensation's designers have, in the course of their ongoing engineering and revisioning of their saddle design, collected and examined enough information to be dignified with the term 'data', though.
