[IceHorses] Camping - OT
The absolute best camping we ever did was without horses. In the period of years between the time our first five fledged the nest and the time we re-filled it with four more kids, Bruce and I camped with a canoe and two tiny dogs. One week we piled our all our gear in the canoe and canoed up a lake where we made camp up on a rock outcropping overlooking a little cove. For an entire week we didn't see another human. It was an incredible experience. When the weekend came, we were a little miffed when we saw a guy in a kayak coming around a corner into our bay. We also canoed 15 miles up a high desert reservoir and in the ocean to a boat-in camp up in Washington's San Juan Islands. Nancy

--- Renee Martin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Oh Denise, he was gorgeous! What happened to him when you were discharged? Were you able to take him with you to the States? Hi Renee: Gosh, I wish I could have. I really tried to get Kiff, and his son, Kelly to the states but piroplasmosis did me in. I contacted Miami, port of entry at the time for them and found out all the particulars, expense, etc. It was do-able and I was ready. Unfortunately when the blood results came back they were all carriers of piroplasmosis. I would imagine most horses on Antigua probably are. The vector is a tick and it has been pretty much erradicated in the states. They did tell me that there was a treatment but (can't remember now how much) at the time it was super expensive. The kicker was that they had to be in a tick free environment for an extended period of time before coming to the states, be retested and when the total was presented, way over the top for me. This was over 20 years ago so have no idea what they could do now. I was so frustrated over the whole thing, instead of coming to the states, I put in for Ascension and got it. I ended up spending 10 years down below the equator on a horseless island. They were not out of my heart, however. We had to land on Antigua for a 2 hour refeuling every time we went to the states or return from the states, which was usually a few times a year and I always went down in the field to visit with my horses. (some of them anyway). The man that I sold Kiff to lived on the base and worked at the radar as well. I nearly always got on Kiff bareback and went for a short ride around the base before I had to board the plane. I realize there were folks that had to sit next to me that did not appreciate the horsey aroma I carried with me but it did not bother me at all. The trip from Asension to the coast of FL took 12 hours in the air on a C-141 aircraft by the way. Gosh, just writing about this brings back so many memories I thought I had nearly forgotten. Seems like a lifetime ago. Kiff was a very kind and wonderful horse and completely dismissed any fears I had about owning and riding a stallion. My Icelandic stallion, Skyfaxi is the closest thing I have found that could compare to Kiff. I will never have to say goodbye to him, thank goodness. Never miss a thing. RE: [IceHorses] cute pup available OT
I have never seen one! amazing. They do look like your maggie tho dont they?? Janice No, Maggie doesn't really look like one to me. She looks more setter-ish, not shepherd-y, but who knows what she really is a mix of. I did see an apparent stray English Shepherd in the neighborhood a day or two before Maggie showed up...but I now have a suspicion where she came from and she might not be related to that English Shepherd at all. She COULD be part English Shepherd, but she doesn't look a lot like one. The woman who came up to tell me there was a stray near my driveway called back twice to check on her. She looked pretty poor, and really seemed oddly upset about her, and she had a bunch of stuff in her car when she came by... like she was moving. She mentioned her husband was very upset with her. After thinking about it, Maggie wasn't skinny when she came, and was pretty clean. I wonder now if the woman was leaving her husband, and couldn't keep her puppy, so when she saw the sucker sign by my driveway, she brought her to me. Who knows...? The woman wasn't from my neighborhood - not sure why she was driving by our country road. Maggie has a home now, so I guess it doesn't matter. maybe time to start him with no bridle! I often either drop the reins or hold them in one hand on trail so that I can use my other hand for whatever - drinking water or taking pictures or ... neither horse seems to even care. My friend Bev sure had a silly look on her face the other day, though. We were getting ready to go out on a ride and she sort of flipped her reins and they just went right on over her horse's head and there she sat, on a figgity Arab youngster - no reins. They even have a Jack Benny class for us old folks over 40. They also have fun shows where any clothing/tack choices are a go. That was all I was doing at the end with Calvin. I discovered that the only saddle that fit him was my sheepskin covered Boz that is definately not english but also not quite a western either. We were supposed to spend another night out but went back because we were too hungry! We progressed to a 35' used Blue Bird Motor coach with all the bell's and whistles. [IceHorses] The other extreme-same result
Apparently I still have a subscription to Equus magazine. There was an article titled 'Showing in slow motion'. It talks about how the QH and paint horses winning in the show ring are not showing two beat diagonal gaits, but 4 beat lateral gaits and the lope is 4 beat stepping gaits. The scientist studying the gaits said that We are essentially making non gaited horses gaited. Obviously, there is a huge disconnect between what is supposed to be winning in the show ring and what actually is. It goes on to say that a similar study was done in 2001 which showed the same result and the breed association rewrote the rule book in 2004 but same stuff is still going on today. They say these artificial gaits are causing arthritis and damaged hocks. Showing horses with low heads vs high head and dragging feet vs high foot action results in non gaited horses being gaited and damage to the horses. I normally work on Sundays and the local fairgrounds is kind of on our way home. Many Sundays they have the quarter horse shows and I'd stop and watch for a few minutes. It drives me nuts to see these horses doing the shuffling gaits that don't resemble jog/trot or lope/canter. The horses still have their head way too low and they are going way too slow. It doesn't look fun for anyone. Maybe I'll make copies of the article and give them to the judges next summer. -- Anna Southern Ohio

(which they don't over use -- the different rides during the summer will have different overnight spots) Most of the horses and pack mules are turned loose to graze at night, having been trained to hang around with the bell mule mare. The clanking of her neck bell was a comforting sound at night. The wranglers would keep a few horses in the picket line, in case they needed to round up the animals, but since the mules and horses got a cup or two of sweet feed in their nose bags while they were saddled up in the morning, they were usually front and center at dawn. The pack mules mainly carried the guest and wrangler's duffles, the tents needed, the camp kitchen for the wrangler cook, . . . and a privy seat (a real luxury . .. to be able to sit g). Somehow the cook wrangler managed to pack food for about 15 people in one mule's panniers. Plus we ate a lot of trout that people caught. maybe you could buy wandas bob marshall! Janice -- even good horses have bad days sometimes.
Re: [IceHorses] Camping - OT
I did a 2 week ride in the colorado mountains and they let the horses loose at night and got up early in the morning to round them up.

That was a nice thing for you to do Judy. Thanks. I know I'm preaching to the choir, but I just can't believe how much I enjoy this little mare. There is just no drama. If I like Yrsa, who was actually purchased for my use, as well, I will be a very happy woman indeed. Nancy
Re: [IceHorses] AERC Convention This Weekend
I know and thank you. It's not even that far away, but it would mean leaving Bruce alone with the kids. Our caregiver is taking care of her own sister while her parents are away for a week. He can actually handle it, but it's a tough balancing act for one person. Nancy

Re: [IceHorses] Susan? Hoof Protection
Here's that hoof protection info I was considering. http://www.hoofarmor.com/ WE use hoof armor in our farrier business. It is a good product if put on correctly. You must follow the instructions perfectly. We have used it to help a horse transition to barefoot...for horses with tender soles...works great if you shoe in the front, you might be able to use this product for the hinds...it last about 4 weeks on our volcanic terrain, I am thinking it would last longer in normal conditions. 2 people for the process is very helpful, and a good horse willing to keep the foot up Skye Fire Island Eco-Treks-808-443-6085 Fire Island Professional Farrier Service-640-6080
Re: [IceHorses] Susan? Hoof Protection
http://www.vettec.com/65/productsdo.html This might be worth trying out, as well, I'm thinking. We have not used the ADhere product, but all of the VETTEC products we use are very very good products. They are high quality. Skye Fire Island Eco-Treks-808-443-6085 Fire Island Professional Farrier Service-640-6080

It's beautiful Lorraine! What's happening with Dagur? Is he still at the trainers? Do you go to see him and ride him? Dagur is a sore subject. I picked him up the middle of last month. I was so sick that he didn't get ridden at all or Scooter. I am riding Scooter and Dagur is pretty much doing nothing, He got ridden last week. My husband likes him but doesn't ride him. He is still listed for sale. I came down on the price.

Now she is gonna paint the trailer and the van matching camo :) Janice We want to camp with our horses too. We have finally figured out where to go here and do that. Some places are just a ride from our barn, and some are a trailer ride. We have one of those old 1980's straight load trailers. The feed/tack area was taken out and there is no divider, so its much more 'like' a stock trailer. WE want an aluminum stock...but thats about $14,000and believe it or not our old trailer cost us $2,500 here. We should have brought our old trailer from Washington with us when we moved...I bought it for $600, sold it for $500, and here I could have gotten $2,500. Some things are cheaper here, some things are just outrageous! Took a lovely ride today down to the ocean with some visiting trekking guests...it was awesome.
