RE: [IceHorses] Cherie -- Did you ever get to see a saddle chariot??
>>Cherie, >> I keep forgetting to ask ya -- Did Simon Mulholland ever make it to >>this event and did you get to at least see a saddle chariot? >>Renee M. Several months ago, I got to see and try the prototypes that a woman in Asheville has, but I have yet to see the final version. Simon is so frustrating! I don't even know what happened. I emailed him a couple of times before he was due to show up and never heard from him! When it became clear that he wasn't coming, I emailed him and begged him to send me one to demo, nothing. Wasn't he supposed to swing by your place too? Flakey inventors!! I think now I'd be afraid to be a sales rep. for him, even if he does get a few out here. RE: [IceHorses] Re: Newbie Questions
-Original Message- From: IceHorses@yahoogroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Karen Thomas Hi Lori, I'd love to have all those trails right from my backyard! >>>Sounds like you should fit in just fine on this list. :) Cherie has a >>two-year-old filly that I think she still wants to sell. Karen's right, I do have a 2 year old, black filly, Roka that I posted photos of a few days ago. I'm supposed to sell her or her mother, but I really want to keep both...I live and work as a farm manager on my boss's property and am supposed to have two horses (I can get away with three) and right now I have four, but I have not made much of an effort to sell either ;) I think Roka will be nicely gaited under-saddle because she does a variety of gaits out in the pasture and in-hand, no guarantees as to what gait, but it should be comfy. Her dad does the signature rack/tolt and saddle rack, mom leans more toward a slight foxtrot. She does a lot of hiking with me and has had a couple driving lessons, I was saddling her mom and she wanted to try so I put my Sensation saddle on her and loosely girthed her. She could care less. You should come down and see Karen's kids and my girl! Cherie No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG. RE: [IceHorses] Young horse training basics - trail
>I really think they do better if they go out alone early and often. I take my horses hiking alone from a very young age. They are often have a short comfort zone distance at first, so we gradually get farther and farther away and I try to go just a short distance outside the comfort zone each time as the distance they're willing to go increases. Two days ago, I took my four year old Fjord to the Ford Fun Fest at Blowing Rock, NC. Last year she got to get used to being in a stall and I just walked her around the facility and let her hang out in the arena while the other horses practiced around her. I sat on her and let her follow another horse around and easy 1/2 mile trail. This year we participated in a Natural Horsemanship clinic. One helpful note-Tyra lives with 7 other horses and the Belgian gelding often runs up behind her and bites her butt. At the clinic, she was apprehensive when the others came up behind her, and she threatened to kick. We practiced a lot with horses slowly coming up behind her, then backing off. We rode in the front, middle, and back. We rode between two columns of horses and then we were in the column and others rode by us. In the arena, we followed a cart and then let her lead the cart. I lead her about a mile 1/2 up to a mansion that's a tourist attraction, so she could see the people, strollers, horse-drawn cart, etc. and then rode her back. We meet other horses but she didn't worry too much about wanting to follow, because we'd done so much work alone. We finished the week with a 2 hr. ride to lake and back with a cart and 5 other Fjords. She was awesome!! I'm going to take my 2 year old Icelandic, Roka to the Biltmore mansion and introduce her to the same things. RE: [IceHorses] Horse records
>How do all of you keep your horse records? - Shots, worming, training? >Do any of you use a specific software? -- >Laree in NC I have a weekly/monthly dry erase board on the barn wall. Anything that gets done is put on that. It holds 4 months worth of info. and then I transfer the info. to a weekly/monthly planner book. I keep these for back-ups. Eventually, I transfer the info to my data program. Equivision-Horseworks. It has a number of categories you can use: General Vet/Farrier Vaccination De-worm Injury/Illness Tests Treatments Farrier Breeding (stallion stuff like sperm motility) Production (mare stuff) Show Genealogy You can print reports on individual horses and with the Pro version you can track boarding and training fees and print bills. This is a relatively cheap program you can find in the horse catalogs. When I ran a boarding stable, we used Horsetrak Business. You could look up info. by client or horse and it had health, pedigree, journal, calendar, breeding and billing functions. One thing I liked when trying to keep track of 40 horses was if vaccines or deworming were overdue it would alert you. I think this was a pricey program. RE: [IceHorses] Conformation
>Just curious, Cherie, do a lot of Fjord owners present and ride their own >horses? The horses are usually presented by the owners. Some of the bigger Fjord farms have trainers who live on the farm and train for the owners. In that case, the trainers present with the owner there. According to the internet chatting I see, the Fjord guys who show seem to be very willing to help novice people at their first shows. They do Western and English (usually traditional, correct dressage) and of course the driving and draft stuff. It's interesting in that I have never heard any Fjord folks unhappy with how the evaluations are done. There are always three judges and they are happy to answer questions. RE: [IceHorses] Conformation
I don't have a copy of the International one. We did a mock U.S. eval at the Fjord Fun Fest last year and the basic test is done in-hand. Walking in a triangle pattern, and trotting in a triangle pattern. They ask that the lead be loose. The horse is to stand quietly while the judge looks it over. One of the requirements is they look at the bite and teeth. After the horse reaches three, they can participate in performance evals. All the gaits including canter are evaluated at liberty and while ridden. This link is to buy the International manual. http://www.fjordhorseint.no/side.asp?ID=16 This link is the newly added performance test info. http://www.fjordhorseint.no/side.asp?ID=17 This is the International Fjord group and they are Norwegian run but members in the association are comprised of most of the worldwide Fjord horse registries. Below are there stated objectives: To keep the Fjord Horse as a typical breed according to the guidelines in the Norwegian description of the breed. To work for the acknowledgement and distribution of the Fjord Horse throughout the world. To develop and handle stud-book information. To standardise international judging rules and judging. To develop international competition systems, and standardise rules and regulations for this competitions. To conclude international goals for the Fjord Horse in order to encourage education and competence regarding the Fjord Horse. To operate an updated information channel with links to other relevant information sites. To take initiatives for a Breeders Conference every year. Here is a link to the Norwegian Fjord Horse Registry (this is the U.S. registry) If you click on evaluation program and scroll to the bottom of the page, there are links to the PDF files explaining the whole process: https://www.nfhr.org/index.php?com_frontpage&Itemid=1 Cherie Internal Virus Database is out-of-date. RE: [IceHorses] Conformation
I think the Fjord people have a better system. Here is a description of some of what comprises a Fjord evaluation. The owner gets a score sheet that explains how the horse was graded. They not only have a conformation evaluation but there are also use tests. Riding, driving, draft pulling to show that they are able to actually do the things they were bred for! http://www.fjordworld.com/classics/classic5444.html The Fjord Horse International Association also publishes a book for judges and breeders that explain the evals. RE: [IceHorses] pure love now mixing geldings and mares
I agree with Karen. Geldings and mares should get along fine. You might want to introduce another gelding slowly if one possessive gelding has had a group of mares for some time. At some stables I've worked that had pasture board, they were adamant that the mares and geldings be separate, but I've always mixed mine. In CA when I was working with Rock Ranch's horses, I had three geldings, a yearling colt, and two mares in the pasture-all got along. Now there are two Belgian geldings and four mares and a filly in together. They are all compatible except at feeding time one of the Belgians was a bully, but now that I've taught him to stand in the corner while I bring the skinnier Belgian in another corral for extra food, then he gets a treat, he continues standing while I bring the bale in and quickly give the mares their hay-he then gets his hay and some special goodies in his corner! A lot of movement helps. Hopefully, his heels are not too long and back where they're supposed to be and the toes are fairly short and he is walking with a heel first landing. Some horses that have a proper trim and still have yucky looking frogs and grungy stuff in the collateral groove on the side of the frog have had wonderful success with a few White Lightening soaks. It kills the bacteria and/or fungus in there and then allows the barefoot trim to do its job. Many horses are fine on pasture but ouchy on harder ground, because they're hooves adapt to the environment in which they live. Many of use who keep our horses barefoot, make sure to have an area of pea gravel or make some harder trails in their pastures that they walk over daily. It preps their feet for similar surface riding. If you don’t want to do that, what's wrong with wearing boots for the ride? Does he go sound with boots on? RE: [IceHorses] ground driving-Saddle Chariot
I talked to Simon again today. He's probably buying the 10 prototype frames back from the rep who never repped, and he thinks he can update them and put the new harnesses on and be able to sell them for a discount (email me privately). He would be more predisposed to sell those discounted ones to people who would be willing to let other people come and see and/or try them. He was really excited about the wheel chair version. He's working on a radio-controlled release. There will be a quick release for the driver, but also a radio-controlled quick release for a back-up. Something a helper can operate from a distance if needed. He still says he's planning to come to the Fjord Fun Fest end of June, go up to Virginia and then try to get a few more visits in. If anybody really wants to try one and can get a group together that might pay a small fee each to get the demo (Simon's highly entertaining) and help pay for his traveling expenses, let me know. You would need an Icelandic (or other small horse) that knows the basics of driving, or a mini horse or something else really small that is really mellow and leads well. RE: [IceHorses] ground driving-Saddle Chariot
Hi Renee, I said that. I've bee talking to Simon for ages, but as a typical inventor, he kept tinkering and modifying. He did send 10 prototypes to a woman in Texas who didn't do anything with them. Last year, I found out that she'd moved to North Carolina. I tried several times to contact her and go see the saddle chariots. Simon thought she was going to train a few people to use them for demo purposes. She wanted all or nothing, and wanted to have them manufactured in the US and be the sole distributor, but didn't pursue it. Her daughter finally contacted me. I went and tried it. I drove a not very well broke pony. The Saddlechariot was a blast. We went up a hill, along a pretty bumpy riding trail and down a fairly steep hill, through sand and mud. No problems! You can turn on a dime! This was not the quick release version, but you can easily step off at a steady trot while still holding the reins. Simon was going to prod her into action or try to buy back the Chariots from her and retrofit them with the new harnesses. The old frames are not as pretty as the new ones, but are every bit as functional. Simon said people will always be able to get replacement parts and anytime there is a change or upgrade they will always mesh with the older models. They are probably going to be around $2800-3000 per cart and quick release harness. I told Simon we women will want the harnesses in different colors. He says he can do that and also powder-coat the frames for an additional fee! If he can get out of the deal he made with the other lady I may be able to get the older frames for us for a good deal if others are interested. One Saddle Chariot can be modified to work with several different sized horses, with a few extra parts. Cherie No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG. (I'm trying to work with him to rep these things, but he had already promised the entire US to a lady who has had the prototypes for more than two years and done nothing. He's trying to undo the deal). If he shows up...he's a flaky inventor you know...it will be at Moses Cone June 23-28. If he doesn't show up, there's a lady in Asheville who has several of the prototypes. I drove one at her house. The harness didn't look nice enough to sell but it worked well. I'm trying to get one of the carts she has and a new harness from Simon, maybe we can do a two-fer deal. Renee, I've been working on trying to get him out here for two years, but he says he is for sure coming out in June to the Fjord Fun Fest in NC. That would be the start of his summer tour. He wanted to hitch-hike around the US and demo the saddle-chariot, then he was trying to get in with some horse shippers and travel with them, but I told him he'd be better off actually scheduling some demo clinics and charging just enough to pay his expenses. I may have the opportunity to buy some of the prototype frames and have him bring the new harnesses out. The older frames are a little more utilitarian but fully functional and it may take $500+ off the price of a fully imported one. The wheel-chair version does sound interesting and Simon is really excited about it. Cherie No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG. Judy, Virginia, Laree, Trish, Janice, concerned others, Thanks for your kind words. I'm trying to find out more about what's going on. I'll be calm enough tomorrow to ask the rescue. My mom suggested, if we can't find someone who needs a gorgeous, sweet pasture pet, contacting Best Friends (the big no-kill rescue in Utah) and she would help me pay for some of the shipping. When I visited there they had a nice set-up for horses. I'll keep you updated as I find out more. Cherie No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG. It was made very clear to them that he probably couldn't be ridden and they assured me that wasn't important and he would have a "FOREVER" home with a little pony friend he'd met there. I am so upset!!! I cried all night after I saw the notice from Kim on the other Icelandic site. I don't own my own property anymore and can't take him back. If anyone out there is still looking for a pasture buddy, contact me. He gets along great with other horses, he was an excellent Uncle to my mare Lilja's colt. He really took to clicker training and was the first one to come running. He ponies well from another horse, he just does not seem to be able to handle being ridden. He has seen chiropractors and vets have deemed him sound, but there may be some unseen glitch that causes him pain in certain riding situations. He has hurt a number of people, including me, but is a sweet heart on the ground. Please email or contact me for more info. Cherie 828-400-9830. I also have photos. That's the one Lil had on in the pic. The 1/2 bosal is like a gentle rope bosal and the reins tie under the chin. The Parelli style one is exactly like the Parelli halter/bridle with a mecate style rope attached. Lil prefers to be directed from the side, but Tyra does fine with the reins coming from underneath. RE: [IceHorses] Stuck in ground driving
>I need some tips on how to get a horse going forward in the long lines WITHOUT a helper leading. Renee, I taught Tyra (Fjord) to drive by myself with clicking. I did a lot of work first on having her stand still while I moved behind her. If your horse already ground ties or is mat trained, it will be a big help. When I was ready to move forward, Tyra already knew the commands walk and trot, so I just asked her to walk and it she stepped forward even one step, I clicked and went to her to reward, so she wouldn't turn around for it. She did go through all the contortions you mentioned at first. If she started to turn around and I couldn't use the lines to prevent her, I just walked up to her and repositioned her. No reward. Once she went forward a few feet, it was easy after that. She really enjoys exploring our property while I drive her. She graduated to pulling a tire, then a travois (shafts with a piece of wood across them to attach traces too), this summer she will start lessons with the cart. When we got a new, young whale at Marine World, I was in the Veterinary Dept. at the time and they didn't want anyone to immediately start training. They just wanted her to settle in, adapt to her new whale friend, learn to be hand-fed fish, etc. so for several months my job was to hang-out with Vigga, feed her, and float around in the water with her! Tough huh?! (Her name supposedly means "little girl" in Icelandic and we actually had someone from the Icelandic consulate come out for a christening). I think the variable reinforcement is the most helpful with animals that are performing and doing numerous repetitions per day. I totally agree with you Renee, I always reward for standing still while mounting, often for good gait, and an immediate whoa from a seat or verbal cue. RE: [IceHorses] treats
I personally don't like the variation of clicker training that varies giving of the reward for the correct behavior because of this sentiment. > > >> Can you clarify? I'm not sure what you mean by "varies the giving of the >> reward." >as I understand it, there's a group or theory within clicker >trainers that think it beneficial not to reward the horse EVERY time he gets >the right answer when training and establishing a new behavior. If you're talking about a variable rate of reinforcement, that is when once an animal knows a behavior pretty well, you vary the number of times they have to do the behavior before clicking and rewarding. Maybe one time you ask for a behavior and click and treat, next, you may not reward until the second one, then you might reward three in a row. It's very much like people playing a slot machine. If you got something every time, it would be boring. We noticed with the killer whales, if you whistled and rewarded every ball jump (where they jump out of the water and touch a suspended ball hanging over the pool) the whales would gradually get lazy- knowing they would get paid no matter what, jump with less enthusiasm, sometimes not touching the ball at all. If they got a variable reinforcement, they always did their best thinking "this might be the one!" They did get reinforced much more than not. Once you click though, you should always reward. I would not vary the rate of reinforcement until the animal knows the behavior. When first learning the parts of a behavior the reinforcement should be very high and only withheld to move to the next level (in tiny increments). Cherie No virus found in this outgoing message. I pull the strap snug, tie a half-hitch around the buckle, just in case and cut the excess off, sealing it with a light to keep from fraying. RE: [IceHorses] Any new topics? (please...?!)Now What is Smart in horses
>I think Mura is about the smartest of them all. >The funny thing is, that on first meeting her, it's not something you >would guess. She is sweet and quiet and very easy to get along with. Laree, You've got Mura's personality down, at first she seems so nonchalant, "Don't pay any attention to me, I'm not worth worrying about" Then when no one's around those little gears a clicking away in her head. She's not generally a bratty smart, using her brains toward evil purposes, like the little Welsh/Arabian I had! Mura gently manipulates things her way, but she's also like a good witch, taking good care of beginners. She does not like living in a large herd and hates to be in the middle of commotion, especially around feeding time, so for awhile, she'd stay way back and let everyone fight it out and then mosey on in and eat, but one day I saw her walk down below the barn, look on the right side, come back to where the other horses were eating on the left, look at me, walk all the way around the barn again, quietly come up to the fence on that side and nicker as quietly as she could and still have me hear her. She wanted me to feed her on that side, but she didn't want the others to know! From that day on, she'd make sure none of the other horses were looking, sneak over and nicker. It remained our little secret that she got to eat over there! Cherie No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG. RE: [IceHorses] Herd Guards
Llamas are good guardians against dogs and coyotes, I don't think they'd fare well against a cougar. Two stray coon hounds came into one of our pastures last week and the llamas and the two Great Pyrenees all ran to the fence on alert. Luckily for them, they were in the one that no animals are in, so the gate was closed and the llamas and dogs couldn't reach them. The poor coon hounds were terrified just from the Pyrenees' barking and I managed to catch them and call their owner before they got beat up! Cherie
RE: [IceHorses] Cougar Scare
We lived in Arizona and saw cougars occasionally when we were riding. They followed from a distance but never bothered us. We did have one incident where a very young cougar who had either lost his mom or was just learning how to hunt came into out stable in the early evening and just walked through quickly. That night he jumped into a large pasture with 15 horses in it. He clawed one pony on her butt and one tall appy on his neck, then the horses must have proceeded to kick the *&% out of him, because when we got out there, there were several clumps of cougar hair and some blood. He never came back! Cherie
RE: [IceHorses] Re:Good parrot pet was Clicker Training Question
>>>Is there a good breed of "starter" parrot? >> Not really. Even parakeets can live 10-15 years, >I meant in terms of easiest to get along with (for example) that might be >better for the beginner parrot owner. Renee: Parakeets (Budgerigars)gotten young make good pets. Male parakeets have some of the largest vocabularies of all parrots, but they have a very high-pitched, sometimes hard to understand voice. Lovebirds can be nice pets if hand reared, although they sometimes go through a pinchy stage. Hand reared cockatiels can also make very nice pets. These species are "relatively quiet" compared to most other parrots, don't bite as hard as most can, and are small enough to fit in most households and still have a roomy cage. As Karen mentioned, they still have a pretty long lifespan and require the same lifespan commitment as a dog. Do not get a parrot if you are not home most of the time. They really do need a lot of interaction. Leaving a bird alone for 8+ hours a day can be detrimental mentally and physically. Cherie
RE: [IceHorses] Re: Clicker Training Question
>What your talking about is traditional methods. Clicker training does >not ignore attempts to learn..it rewards the try and offered >behaviours. Its all about positive re-enforcement. >Ask the children or watch a Tag Teach programme. Sue: Well said. I'm so glad you brought up Tag Teach, that is a neat program. Many of the parrots I trained with clicker training were birds imported as adults, then sold as potential pets. These birds did not adapt well to captivity. Many were aggressive, destructive and very, very noisy (can you blame them?). A number of unhandlable birds were donated to animal parks where I worked. Clicker training did wonders for them because they were getting attention, but no stressful pressure. They could chose to participate or not. They never were punished. Many became show birds and were quite happy to jump out on our arms and go over to the stage area, where before they were almost impossible to get out of the cage. Cherie

>i found with amazons, they talk before they are weaned! they would be >saying gd boy! when i would spoon them their formula, wouldnt even >have feathers yet. Then I got my grey. not a word. Amazons often work out their language skills in front of people, babbling away while they learn how to put sounds together, while greys most often listen very carefully for a long time, practice in a very low voice when no one is around, start talking louder when people are in the other room, and finally graduate to talking in front of people! Now we've been stuck up here for two days because the road to our house is nothing but a series of tight switch-backs. Nerve wracking to guests on a perfect day! RE: [IceHorses] Horsey Christmas gift?
Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas! I got a helmet cam and a Trackstick! http://www.trackstick.com/trackstickII.htm The Trackstick is about the size of a pocket knife. It uses satellites to track your movement. You can keep it on you and when you're done hiking, riding, etc., you plug it into a USB port. The software shows the time you started, any stops and their length, speed, direction, altitude, temp. and then you can bring it up on GoogleEarth or YahooMaps as a map. It will be great when I go wandering around on the trails, using pieces of different trails. I can make my own trail map and then I can get videos of it with my helmet cam! We had snow enough to play in this morning and it's almost all melted now. That's the way I like my snow. Cherie Western North Carolina Lilja, Roka (Icelandics)and Tyra (Fjord)
RE: [IceHorses] "Fixing" a horse
Susan: My sweet little Fjord, is low horse on the totem pole in our herd of 7. The Belgian geldings are especially worrisome to her because to run her off food they run up behind her and nip her butt hard. I ride her around on my property alone and she has been ridden in the arena with two of the mares who are gentle with her, with no problem. The first time I took her to a Fjord horse get-together, I was hand walking her and a little Arabian gelding ran up behind her and she kicked him. She doesn't dare kick hard in protest at home and she didn't this time, but it was startling! I knew she was afraid these strange horses were going to bite her, so we did a little clicker training. I had her follow a gelding close, so she could smell him and touch him and then had her pass him. I clicked her all the time she was being calm, while she was passing, just as his nose got to her midsection and continued clicking while he got in position behind her. I had people lead horses past her from the front so she could see them first and then go behind her while I clicked her for calm behavior. Then I had one come up behind slowly from far away, come just to before the spot she might get a bit tense, click and reward. When we finally went out on her first trail ride, we started walking behind one mellow, slow gelding. When she ended up walking faster than him, we passed him and again I clicked her several times during the process, and she was fine with him behind her. The first time I ride in a big group, we may have some more work ahead of us. Cherie

Our chickens live in a cute wheeled a-frame chicken hut that can be closed up at night for extra protection they are fenced inside a movable plastic mesh electric fence. RE: R E: [IceHorses] Leaving home on Dagur
>I was clucking instead of using a clicker. >And treating. It will take a while. >Lorraine If you're clucking as a go forward cue and treating AFTER he's gone a step, you're actually rewarding the stop! If you cluck to go forward and just as he's in the process of stepping, you click, the click is telling him that what he did at that moment is what you're looking for. If you meant that you're using a single cluck sound instead of the clicker, that's ok. A lot of people have trouble handling the clicker, reins, etc. I use a single cluck for the "yes" and a "kiss" for go. Cherie
RE: [IceHorses] Computer illiterate

R E: [IceHorses] Leaving home on Dagur
I was working with an Icelandic who did exactly that. Stopped dead. It really helped to clicker her for any forward motion. If she was stuck, I'd try to get her to move even one front foot and click. If I couldn't get her to step straight forward, if I got her to step slightly to the side, I'd still click and treat. first just for a few steps each time, then more and more. It would probably help to still do the carrot things for a double incentive! Cherie

A friend >had the same experience. >Any helpful hints? >Nancy The only problem I had is some of the audio books sequence their chapters the same for each CD, assuming people are loading one CD at a time. Then if you load them to the ipod it gets confused as to what to play next and will often play all the CD's chapter 1s then chapter 2s etc. instead of in sequence. When I'm about to download a CD to the Ipod site, once the CD is recognized, I right click, and then click on Get Info and will change the names of the cuts to something like CD1-1, CD2-1, etc. and then they will play in the right order. That's NOT in my farm Manager job description! The murder mysteries work best for me. I borrow the audio books from the library, download them to the I Pod library and then load what I want to my Ipod at my leisure. While you're raising them you have to be very careful that they don't eat a lot of rocks and other indigestible items. They are much nicer than ostriches but can still pack a punch when they kick and they do peck at shiny objects!
