RE: [ilugd] accessing NTFS

2003-08-03 Thread Tarun Upadhyay
As far as I understand, NTFS 5.0 (which windows XP runs) is not supported
under linux.
You might be lucky to be able to mount and able to read (unless you have
something complicated like filestreams or encrypted (or otherwise
redirected) volumes) NTFS but it would be *extermely dangerous* to write to
NTFS 5.0 from linux.

NTFS 4.0 (windows NT) should work okay (though even that is not recommended
to mount rw)

I doubt whether PCQLinux8.0 comes with a kernel
pre-configured to access NTFS mount points. It is based
on RHL 8 which doesn't have a stock kernel for accessing
NTFS.

Try the mount command, if you get a message something
like "ntfs not supported by kernel", then you need to
compile a new kernel. If you installed the kernel
sources, you will find them in /usr/src/linux---.
Follw the instructions as given in README in the
directory. When compiling is complete save the new
kernel with an new name to /bbot and add a new option
in grub/lilo. Do not save it with the same name
(vmlinuz---) as if there is some problem, you may not be
able to boot into your default linux.

Hi Subodh,
1. You can mount ntfs partition - "mount -t ntfs
/dev/hd? /mnt/winxp"(give the values according to your
system, check the man pages in case of doubt.)You can
put this command in your /etc/fstab file so that the
partition is mounted at boot time.

2. Your Linux box may not be optimally configured
which may be the reason for it running slow. Check the
Linux configuration Howto document at tldp.org. Also
check "man hdparm" and optimize your harddisk access.

“You look everything but you see only what you want to

Never really believed in this until I joined an
organization a few days ago (39 days to be exact).
This organization deals with research and
implementation of free / open source software. The
concept has been there for quite a few years now but
never gave it a thought. A friend has been an active
member of ILUG-D, Prateek Khanna, a few of u may know
him ;o). He tried to explain the whole concept
n-number of times but a dud brain like mine couldn’t
grasp the idea. And yes, an idea can change your life.
It did, once I tried to look in to the matters myself,
seriously. I am working with one such firm that is in
to promoting the idea (and at times, !dea ). Coming
back to the quotation I started with, You see what you
want to see… suddenly I see that there are so many
magazines, journals, white papers all over the
internet and in print media that serve the purpose of
software freedom. The latest issues of PC Quest, Linux
for you… you name any software magazine and its filled
with articles that talk pro freedom of software. Guys
like you are also doing a great job. My work is
basically to “enlighten” people (yes, there are people
in the real world who have no idea that there are
softwares besides the ones provided by Microsoft). To
distribute knowledge you need to have some yourself.
So I log on to google.com and search “free software”
and get 2,480,000 in 0.11 seconds (this is just the
list of articles and write ups), and a search result
of 20,600 in 0.27 seconds for “Linux user groups”.
PHEW! I was zapped. Free software is there for FREE. A
normal human brain would call it free of cost. But a
genius one like mine (contradicting my own statement
of it being a dud) knows that it’s the idea that’s
free. The concept of freedom of speech, freedom of
thought, freedom to decide is same as this one. No
strings attached. The best part is that we are not
working against or with any one in particular. The
general conception is, “Ok so you are into promoting
Linux and you are condemning Microsoft?” No way, the
theme here is to provide the user with the “freedom”,
to let the programmer, the hacker inside you, free.
So, let the white pigeon fly, cut the red ribbon,
unveil the stone and enter a new era where all are
benefited from the geek minds. As I would like to put
it; Use – reuse, recycle!!!

pretty much straight forward...
like you have other windows partitions vfat/msdos etc...

mount /dev/hdc /mnt/win98
mount /dev/hdx /mnt/winxp

generally the partition type is auto selected, if it doesnt then try
this...

mount -t vfat /dev/hdc /mnt/win98
mount -t ntfs /dev/hdx /mnt/winxp

Date: Sun, 3 Aug 2003 21:12:34 +0200 (CEST)

Good morning list, ,--. ,--.
   \ /-~-\ /
=== )' a a `(
1. Posfix 1.1.12 remote DoS (CAN-2003-0540) .( ,---. ),
`(_o_o_)'=

There is a remotely exploitable denial of service vulnerability in Postfix
up to and including 1.1.12. The vulnerability does not affect the most
current version, 2.0, due to a major overhaul of the address parsing code.
Releases prior to 1.1.9 are not vulnerable by default, but will be exposed
if append_dot_mydomain is turned off in the configuration file (see
section 3 for more details).

Recent 1.1 releases, having no publicly disclosed security problems, are
still commonly used and shipped in several popular Linux distributions,
including Red Hat 9 or Debian 3.0 (woody) - those distributions both ship
1.1.11.

The vulnerability lies in the address parser code. By supplying a remote
SMTP listener with a malformed envelope address, it is possible to,
depending on the method, either:

  - Cause the queue manager, nqmgr, to lock up permanently, effectively
stopping any queue processing - all mail traffic supressed. Restarting
the service has no effect - a specific entry has to be removed from
the queue to fix the problem. For that reason, a builtin watchdog
that restarts nqmgr after a period of nonresponsive behavior, is
not able to cause a recovery from this condition.

The attack can be performed by forcing the service to queue a mail
to an address that would generate a bounce - depending on the
configuration, it can be <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, or, if user
names are being checked, <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. The "mail from" or
"Errors-To" address should be set to "<.!>" or
"<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>". An attempt to parse and rewrite the latter
address when preparing a bounce will lock up the service.

...or...

  - Lock up a single instance of the smtp listener in a unusable state
that persists after the client disconnects. By repeating this,
it is possible to DoS the service (or entire system, depending
on the configuration) in a very effective manner.

This can be achieved by providing any valid "MAIL FROM" in a SMTP
conversation, and then supplying a "RCPT TO" similar to "MAIL FROM"
in the previous example. If the server is vulnerable, the session
should freeze at this point.

The latter approach, since it only creates a single stalled process, is a
less intrusive method of testing your systems for this issue remotely.

The attack can be detected by looking for "resolve_clnt_query: null
recipient" in your maillog. It is then necessary to find the problematic
entry in the queue and remove it manually, then restart the service.

It should be noted that it is often possible to attack instances that do
not have port 25 reachable from the Internet - envelope addresses and
certain headers such as Errors-To may very well be preserved when a
message is relayed via another system or service.

==
2. Postfix 1.1.11 Bounce scan / DDoS agent issue (CAN-2003-0468)
==

There is a remotely exploitable vulnerability in Postfix 1.1.11 (and
earlier versions). Postfix 1.1.12 and 2.0 is NOT affected. The problem was
apparently spotted and fixed in 1.1.12 (note 200221121 in HISTORY file),
although it has been tagged as a change preventing bogus log entries, and
not described as a security issue; there was no public information or
discussion about its implications on security forums, not prompting users
to upgrade. It might be that the significance of this problem was simply
overlooked.

Since the issue has been rediscovered during the analysis of the previous
issue, I decided it's worth mentioning here, especially since 1.1.11 is
shipped all over the place.

The problem enables an attacker to use Postfix 1.1.11 as a DDoS agent or
for bounce scans of other hosts on the Internet, or probing firewalled
internal networks. The problem is triggered by an attempt to deliver to:

  <[server_ip]:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

This address will cause Postfix to connect an arbitrary IP at an arbitrar
