Otherwise IMHO linux-delhi is a popular website and such info. can be put on it. (If the info. is already there then please reply back with the link, TIA). Well whole list knows about #linux-india irc channel where several guys hang out. We have a virtual meeting everyday there. So if you are lay enought to open any irc software and join #linux-india channel then no one can help. Not the whole list. I have joined this list a couple of months back only so I am relatively new to it. There will be people like me. I have seen mails about the real meetings but none on this concept. Re: [ilugd] adding data to iso image
ISO files are the CD images and therefore you will not be able to write by just loop mounting them. To add a data into this iso file, copy the entire contents of it to a temporary area, add the data here and then create the iso using this area. Following is the generic method which can be used to create isos on RedHat. # mkdir /tmp/loop /tmp/temporay # mount -o loop /home/isubodh/ReactOS.iso /tmp/loop # cp -Rp /tmp/loop/* /tmp/temporay (or you can use cpio/ tar etc.. to copy the contents to /tmp/temporay) # cd /tmp/temporay # mkdir Softs ( Add any data that you want under /tmp/temporay) # cd /tmp # mkisofs -o output_file.iso temporay What I understand, generally the ISO images are for creating OS media, which in your case also seems to be the same. Therefore install-order does matter. I am not sure how will you create it for reactOS. I believe the new ISO file that you want should also create the bootable CD, so be sure to specify the -b switch. The other interesting switches for mkisofs on redhat are: -V, -A, -P, -p, -c, -x etc... Please refer man page for further details. If you have good internet connection download the ISOs from redhat.com or if you are looking for CDs check-out at some Nehru Place vendor. 3) Which is the latest version of linux introduced? RHEL4 is the latest RedHat linux but as being an Enterprise Linux is not free... I think from Redhat the latest free version available is RH9.0/ Fedora. 4) Which linux is best suited for me?(Red Hat/Mandriek) i need linux for just trying it out and basic purposes initially, and later for advanced applications and utilities. I will recommend RedHat or SuSE as I am a user of these two only. Waiting for your response... FYI: RHEL 2.1 is not free. If you are looking for freewares RH9.0 should be a good option. What makes you say that RH 2.1 is bad on performance with SATA? I haven't found any such performance issues. In my experience the installation process which usually takes 25-45 minutes on an IBM MPro with SATA disks on any other version takes about 1 hour and 30 min with RHEL2.1. Writing 1G file takes more then 5 minutes and it has load average of about 4-5 during the process. Disk write performance is 3.5 M/s instead of 55M/s Download bonnie++ from http://sourceforge.net/projects/bonnie/ and find the disk performance. The above is what has been observed with RHEL2.1 (with any Update) on IBMs. I just shared my experience; you probably have a different model, different kernel etc.. And what is your definition of free ? In this context free means you don't have to pay a single penny. RH7.x, RH8.0, RH9.0 and Fedora are free, you can download fedora from http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/3/i386/iso/ I couldn't find the link for RH7.x, 8.0 or 9.0, probably because redhat has declared EOL for them. However Redhat's enterprise versions namely: RHEL2.1, 3.0 and 4.0 are license based. You need an RHN login account in order to download the ISOs. rrs - -- Ritesh Raj Sarraf RESEARCHUT -- http://www.researchut.com Gnupg Key ID: 04F130BC Stealing logic from one person is plagiarism, stealing from many is research. -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.2.5 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFCJKYx4Rhi6gTxMLwRAqqUAJ0bgpinDuzDepASeH9GKwhKpAUy9gCbBDw7 a1KvGBO/qPxiW/llgXm6rao= =RH6y -END PGP SIGNATURE- ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/

Re: Re: [ilugd] how to install Red Hat linux
Both the links are working fine. If you are able to access rediffmail, there is no reason for these links to be unavailable... anyway pls. wait a response from someone else as I don't have ready documentation available. Alternatively, if you want to try; just boot the machine from first CD and online help is available on the left panel of the installation windows.
