I am using this connection from Noida on a Windows XP machine.
The connection is good and stable. However, BSNL servers are having
some problems since yesterday as I confirmed it from their helpline
no. 1500. The service is expected to be functional by today evening.
So doesn't matter which OS you are using the service is not available

Please be informed that /usr/share contains a lot of really good

original place is highly suggested.

Depending on the type of installation (workstation/ server/ full/
customised); /usr/share should be from 200MB to 2GB. From the df
output that you have sent; /home is having 2GB free so before the mv
command make sure that /usr/share fits in /home...

put on it. (If the info. is already there then please reply back with

Well whole list knows about #linux-india irc channel

 can help.

Not the whole list. I have joined this list a couple of months back
only so I am relatively new to it. There will be people like me. I
have seen mails about the real meetings but none on this concept.

I dont think there is a seperate need for any virtual

 Entry Free!!

(1) /etc/init.d is linked to /etc/rc.d/init.d and
(2) /etc/rc5.d is linked to /etc/rc.d/rc5.d

(1) contains all the startup scripts whereas (2) has all the S* and K*
scripts which are actually linked to the respective scripts in (1)

so the use of (1) is to keep scripts at one place and a link to them
is created from all the runlevel directories i.e /etc/rc?.d (or
/etc/rc.d/rc?.d) whichever/wherever is required.

2005-03-29 Thread Ajay Mulwani
I have recently installed Redhat 9.0 on a system . I am unable to hear any
sound and unable to use the Lan Card (as i wanted to create a small network).
Perhaps the correct driver is not installed.

(1) Try to configure the soudcard using redhat-config-soundcard. The
utility may tell that the soundcard is correctly configured but if
still there is no sound invoke aumix and /etc/.aumixrc is the
corresponding configuration file.

(2) Try this redhat's getting started guide:
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/getting-started-guide/s1-fun-sndconfig.html

(3) If still there is no sound you might have to try ALSA...
http://www.alsa-project.org/

I am using a USB mouse and it is working corectly now although i wasn't able
to install the Redhat with the USB mouse installed i have to use a ps/2 mouse
 during Redhat installation.

so.. this is not a concern anymore.

Also when i open Hardware Browser i can see a lot of 'unknown' in the system
 devices sub-menu .

send more details... which all devices !

Also a help is needed that can i create a network of Linux and Windows
systems . I have a switch with straight cabling . I wanted to know that if it
is possible than what are the softwares required for that.

Yes, it is possible. You don't need any softwares for that. The
machines are on same network so they should be able to access each
other's resources.

Also if i install a modem than how to make it work to connect to internet. I
mean is there a dial up utility in Linux like there is in Windows. Or will i
have to create a script for dialing etc. If yes can anyone help me in telling
me what should be the starting point to lean creating these scripts.

Try kppp.

Re: [ilugd] adding data to iso image

2005-03-07 Thread Ajay Mulwani
ISO files are the CD images and therefore you will not be able to
write by just loop mounting them. To add a data into this iso file,
copy the entire contents of it to a temporary area, add the data here
and then create the iso using this area. Following is the generic
method which can be used to create isos on RedHat.

# mkdir /tmp/loop /tmp/temporay
# mount -o loop /home/isubodh/ReactOS.iso /tmp/loop
# cp -Rp /tmp/loop/* /tmp/temporay
(or you can use cpio/ tar etc.. to copy the contents to /tmp/temporay)
# cd /tmp/temporay
# mkdir Softs
( Add any data that you want under /tmp/temporay)
# cd /tmp
# mkisofs -o output_file.iso temporay

What I understand, generally the ISO images are for creating OS media,
which in your case also seems to be the same. Therefore install-order
does matter. I am not sure how will you create it for reactOS. I
believe the new ISO file that you want should also create the bootable
CD, so be sure to specify the -b switch. The other interesting
switches for mkisofs on redhat are: -V, -A, -P, -p, -c, -x etc...
Please refer man page for further details.

What makes you say that RH 2.1 is bad on performance with SATA?
I haven't found any such performance issues.

In my experience the installation process which usually takes 25-45
minutes on an IBM MPro with SATA disks on any other version takes
about 1 hour and 30 min with RHEL2.1. Writing 1G file takes more then
5 minutes and it has load average of about 4-5 during the process.
Disk write performance is 3.5 M/s instead of 55M/s

  Download bonnie++ from http://sourceforge.net/projects/bonnie/ and
  find the disk performance.

The above is what has been observed with RHEL2.1 (with any Update) on IBMs.

I just shared my experience; you probably have a different model,
  different kernel etc..

Yes, I've used SMP kernels on my testing machines. Which SATA disks are you
using ?? Maybe they are the issue ??

And what is your definition of free ?

In this context free means you don't have to pay a single penny.
RH7.x, RH8.0, RH9.0 and Fedora are free, you can download fedora from

I thought free in terms of freedom.

thats the GNU statement... this mail thread was initially enquiring in
terms of costs only.

  http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/3/i386/iso/

  I couldn't find the link for RH7.x, 8.0 or 9.0, probably because
redhat has declared EOL for them.

You still need to pay the bandwidth resource charges.

Yes, those are your expenses to the bandwidth provider. The money will
not go into redhat's (or OS provider's) pocket.

However Redhat's enterprise versions namely: RHEL2.1, 3.0 and 4.0 are
license based. You need an RHN login account in order to download the
  ISOs.

You still can download the sources or go for White Box Linux.

Possibly yes, but how close is White Box Linux to redhat is ?

Do you reply all the mail messages by reading just the subject line?

If you're that desperate to have closeness with redhat, redhat deserves the
 pay.

thats again the personal choice.

  Hi

I am currently using Windows XP(Professional) and want Linux as another OS,

 1) I have Pentium 4,3.00 HT, Processor with 915GV Intel motherboard. Hard
disk is 80 GB Serial ATA(Seagate). RAM is 400FSB, 512MB.
Can Linux be loaded on SATA hard disk?

Yes, but be sure RHEL 2.1's performance is just too bad on SATA
drives. FYI: RHEL 2.1 is not free. If you are looking for freewares
RH9.0 should be a good option.

 2) From where in New Delhi, India can I get Linux for free/at reasonable
 rates?
If you have good internet connection download the ISOs from redhat.com
or if you are looking for CDs check-out at some Nehru Place vendor.

 3) Which is the latest version of linux introduced?
RHEL4 is the latest RedHat linux but as being an Enterprise Linux is
not free... I think from Redhat the latest free version available is
RH9.0/ Fedora.

 4) Which linux is best suited for me?(Red Hat/Mandriek)
i need linux for just trying it out and basic purposes initially, and later
 for advanced applications and utilities.

I will recommend RedHat or SuSE as I am a user of these two only.

 Waiting for your response...

Both the links are working fine.

If you are able to access rediffmail, there is no reason for these
links to be unavailable... anyway pls. wait a response from someone
else as I don't have ready documentation available.

Alternatively, if you want to try; just boot the machine from first CD
and online help is available on the left panel of the installation
windows.
