[ilugd] Invitation to join FSUG-Goa mailgroup
Hi, We are writing to you as you are interested in Free Software issues. Some of the issues mentioned below have been discussed informally by some of us, including Frederick Noronha, Vidyadhar Gadgil and Animesh Nerurkar, after there were moderation and ownership changes in ilug-...@yahoogroups.com over the past year or so, which completely reversed the nature of the mailgroup we had become used to and fond of in the period 2000-2008. To get to the point, the only mailgroup in Goa dedicated to free software issues (ilug-...@yahoogroups.com) is de facto oriented towards technical issues only, and discussion on philosophical and political issues is blocked, under one pretext or another. This overly restrictive moderation policy and practice run counter to the principles of Free Software because technical issues are only half the story. The other, more important, part is the philosophy and politics which have guided Free Software. If these are ignored, then Free Software will inevitably become unfree. Also, such an approach creates serious blocks in the process of Free Software popularisation, and restricts all discussion to existing users who have some understanding and experience of technical issues. We increasingly see this approach not only in ilug-goa but in FLOSS groups and meets all over the country, and find it exceedingly disturbing. Whereas we have certain issues with the way ilug-goa is run, there is no inherent conflict between the two groups – in fact, our differences would be similar to those between the Free Software movement and proponents of Open Source software. But we feel the need to create another space where the discussion will not be restricted, and philosophical and political issues will get the importance they deserve. We are therefore setting up a group: fsug-...@yahoogroups.com. This group is an attempt to recover lost space, which has been lost due to an overly restrictive moderation and ownership policy which has been implemented over the past year or so on ilug-...@yahoogroups.com . We (the moderators of FSUG-Goa) will continue to be members of ilug-goa -- if the owners and moderators of that groups permit this, of course. We would like to invite all members of ilug-goa (including its owner and moderators) and other lovers of free software in Goa to join this group too. The moderation policy of this group will be as follows: 1. Abusive posts will not be allowed. 2. Posts should be restricted to Free Software issues, broadly defined. 3. Members' posts will be unmoderated. Only if a poster offends against these rules despite three warnings, (s)he will be placed on moderation. Moderators' decisions on this matter will be taken by a majority decision of the moderators (currently three, as below). 4. We believe in free speech. Other rules, if any, will be evolved only as and when there is an overwhelming opinion that they are needed. Posts will not be blocked, except under exceptional circumstances, as we see this as an attempt to block dissent and discussion. If you would like to join this group, please send a blank mail to fsug-goa-subscr...@yahoogroups.com. And do pass the message on to other people you feel may be interested. Looking forward to having you as a member of this online community. [ilugd] Openmoko, Symbian, Android
Any clues on how these compare on mobiles? Particularly Openmoko and Android? Would the C/C++ thingy be a negative mark for Openmoko? I understand there are license issues too (Symbian isn't 'yet' open source, and Android is in Google's grip). But how does this reflect when it comes to the user's interests? [ilugd] Lyx, My Beautiful GNU/Linux, Mind-Maps, and DP
Videos from Software Freedom Day at BITS Pilani Goa centre... Lyx ... and all that LyX is a document processor following the self-coined what you see is what you mean paradigm (WYSIWYM), as opposed to the WYSIWYG ideas used by word processors. This means that the user only has to care about the structure and content of the text, while the formatting is done by LaTeX, an advanced typesetting system. LyX is designed for authors who want professional output with a minimum of effort and without becoming specialists in typesetting. The job of typesetting is done mostly by the computer, following a predefined set of rules called a style, and not by the author. Specific knowledge of the LaTeX document processing system is not necessary but may improve editing with LyX significantly for specialist purposes. DP explains how he uses this tool... (quote from the Wikipedia) http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=F-03AtOx1Ps My beautiful [GNU]Linux BITS-Pilani Goa campus has grown over the past four to five years, and now has over 2000 students on the outskirts of Vasco/Dabolim. At a Software Freedom Day held on the campus recently (Sept 27, 2008) we encounter students, and learn about their interest in Free Software and Open Source. Also some images from an event that saw talks and presentation span the better part of two days. This video starts with a showcasing of the potential of GNU/Linux, the largely volunteer-built alternative computing system... that's in fact better than the 'real thing' (my view)! http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=Py6YdW03YYE Mind-maps? What's all that about? A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged radially around a central key word or idea. Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid in study, organization, problem solving, decision making, and writing. [ilugd] FLOSS in schools... a syllabi for the Third Standard (eight/nine-year-old) student from India
Free software in schools. Download this from here http://www.divshare.com/download/4053521-61e From Farida Umrani [EMAIL PROTECTED] I am working with Prof. Sridhar Iyer at Dept of Computer Science, IIT Bombay on content development for school computer science based on Edubuntu . We will have the content for elementary class ready in 2008. I am sending you a draft of a textbook for class I (the file is bulky; hence split and send in two mails). [DOWNLOAD FROM URL ABOVE] At present, I am implementing this curriculum in one of the pilot schools. We have included Scratch as a programming language for students in Grade 3 4. Currently we are focusing on elementary classes and plan to scale it up in the next academic year. We are facing difficulties in getting the teachers familiar with open source. Most schools do not have a system administrator or even a regular Internet connection to get the regular updates and prefer an installable CD that gives them everything. But to a windows user, this does not appear intuitive and hence they are put off by it. I wanted to know about your experience with Goa schools? I have read that GCSP trained engineering students and teachers. Did these students help the local schools? We announced a training program for school teachers, but got poor response and therefore deferred it. Did you face similar problems? How did you deal with them? I myself have a Psychology background... and it has taken me several hours of work and reading up the forums to understand the installation and getting all the dependencies right. However, what is encouraging is that students have received the open source applications very well. [ilugd] Taking a look... at some recent developments in Urdu computing (from BytesForAll, South Asia)
]: In 1980 Mr. Ahmad Mirza Jamil developed a ligature based Nastaleeq writing system. He has written about 18,000 valid ligatures of Urdu and developed a Noori Nastaliq font. Center for Research in Urdu Language Processing (CRULP) is releasing a soft copy of these ligatures in Unicode format. CRULP has extensively used these ligatures for testing the fonts developed at the center and realised that it will be a valuable resource for other font developers. These ligatures are grouped in 2 to 8 characters and are sorted in the end character order. The ligatures can be downloaded from www.crulp.org. The fact that there are so many Urdu keyboard layouts while not having any standard set, made it more complex to achieve my goal. BANGALORE: In the largest such simultaneous deployment of 'free-and-open' software in India, over 15 lakh Kerala schoolchildren on Friday start taking their quarterly practical tests in Information Technology on personal computers using a special Linux version. The [EMAIL PROTECTED] project of the State Education Department has developed an operating system based on the Linux version Ubuntu. Called [EMAIL PROTECTED] GNU Linux Version 3.0, it was distributed to 2,832 high schools — over a thousand of them government schools, the rest aided and unaided ones. Between September 7 and 22, children of Classes 8, 9 and 10 will use some 30,000 PCs to do their quarterly practical examinations in IT. Test skills In Class VIII, for example, the examination will test skills in the use of the mouse; the 'Tux' paint software for drawing; word processing and spreadsheets. A trained cadre of over 70,000 teachers will help them. The project has created a whole ecosystem of computer-aided tools for self-paced learning, online testing, instant evaluation, marks generation and so on. All this is done using royalty-free Open Source software. For example, the Open Source picture editing tool Gimp, rather than a pricey proprietary option like Photoshop, is in use. The State's path-breaking e-learning initiative Akshaya had raised popular expectations, but the cost of proprietary software licences in bulk was unaffordable. This led to the State emerging as a pioneer in the use of Open Source resources in a host of education and e-governance projects. In July 2005, Kerala was the first State to use the Edusat satellite channel to connect schools in all its 14 districts under the Virtual Class Technology on Edusat for Rural Schools, or VICTERS, programme. [EMAIL PROTECTED] executive director K. Anvar Sadath, a veteran of the Akshaya programme, said on Thursday that the Central Government had underwritten almost the entire cost of the school computerisation programme to the tune of Rs. 6.2 crores, while the State had spent Rs. 75 lakh this fiscal year. [ilugd] Memo to Microsoft: Stop wasting our time! (Venky Hariharan's blog...)
http://osindia.blogspot.com/2007/08/memo-to-microsoft-stop-wasting-our-time.html Feedback to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thursday, August 30, 2007 Memo to Microsoft: Stop wasting our time! Finally word is out and the Bureau of Indian Standards has confirmed that it will be submitting a No with comments vote to International Standards Organization on Microsoft's OOXML proposal. This brings to a temporary close five to six months of hectic legwork to prevent a sub-standard proposal from getting the coveted tag of an ISO standard. I doubt if Microsoft realises it, but its actions are only making it the Union Carbide of the global IT industry. Microsoft is the world's largest software company but if you flip through their 6000+ pages of OOXML documentation, you'll be justified in wondering how they grew so big if the rest of their work is as shoddy as OOXML. The extremely flawed proposal certainly does not befit its stature in the IT industry. But, does Microsoft learn from all the feedback given to it or does it learn anything from it. No. Humility and Microsoft are like oil and water -- never shall they mix. According to reports coming in from countries that are involved in the ISO vote on OOXML, Microsoft is busy stuffing the ballot boxes. Read Andy Updegrove's blog post The OOXML Vote: How Bad Can it Get? (Keep Counting). Originally, only 30 ISO members were supposed to vote on OOXML. However, as the September 2nd date for the final voting comes close, another ten more countries have joined the committee. Updegrove says: As someone who has spent a great part of my life working to support open standards over the past 20 years, I have to say that this is the most egregious, and far-reaching, example of playing the system to the advantage of a single company that I have ever seen. Breathtaking, in fact. That's assuming, of course, that I am right in supposing that all of these newbie countries vote yes. I guess we'll just have to wait and see a few more days to learn whether that assumption is true. Want to place your bets? Sitting here in India, it is difficult to influence countries like Malta, Cyprus, Ecuador, Jamaica, Lebanon, Pakistan, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, Uruguay and Venezuela in the two days left before the final votes are submitted, but we shall try. I checked with the IT ministry in Pakistan and brought to their attention that Pakistan is now a P member of ISO which entitles it to vote on OOXML. This was news to them as they were not consulted on the OOXML issue. I hope that Pakistan's vote will be cast only after thoroughly reviewing the arguements for and against OOXML. Coming back to India, I am extremely proud of the fact that my country has voted against this proposal. To accept such a poor document would have been to denigrate the very meaning of standards. The academia, the government bodies, industry organizations and non-profits like the Free Software Foundation spent countless hours debating and discussing this issue. Some of the best brains in India burnt the midnight oli to review this 6000 page proposal and the final consensus was that none of Microsoft's answers to the 201 technical issues raised was found satisfactory. I hope the Microsoft bosses in Redmond take note of this and make a genuine attempt to rectify the issues instead of trying to stuff the ballot boxes. For wasting the collective intellect of India's best IT brains, Microsoft and ECMA must be blacklisted. Just as a person with a bad credit history has to redeem himself or herself before applying for subsequent credit, any standards proposal submitted by these two organizations should be thoughly vetted before it is even accepted for review or voting in India. India has more pressing problems to tackle than OOXML. Therefore, Microsoft, please do us a big favor and stop wasting our time. Next time, do your homework before you submit something to India. PS: This is an old joke in the IT industry and shows how little Microsoft has changed in decades. Q. How many Microsoft engineers does it take to change a light bulb? A. None. Microsoft declares Darkness(TM) an industry standard. [ilugd] War of formats: India shows thumbs-down to Microsoft
Posted by Vinayak Hegde [EMAIL PROTECTED] at GII-India http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/Infotech/Software/ India_throws_Microsoft_open_format_out_of_the_window/articleshow/2305780.cms (url has wrapped) NEW DELHI: India on Thursday gave Microsoft a thumbs-down in the war of standards for office documents. In a tense meeting at Delhi's Manak Bhawan, the 21-member technical committee decided that India will vote a 'no' against Microsoft's Open Office Extensible Mark Up Language (OOXML) standard at the International Standards Organisation (ISO) in Geneva on September 2. We unanimously agree on the disapproval of OOXML with comments. The same will be submitted to ISO, National Informatics Centre head and BIS technical committee chairperson Nita Verma said after a marathon meeting that lasted over six hours. There was no need for a voting as only Infosys Technologies and CSI supported Microsoft. The Open Document Format (ODF) alliance, enjoying widespread support from academia and corporates like Oracle, IBM, Red Hat, Sun Microsystems, Google, were in a jubilant mood having succeeded in stalling OOXML from being accepted as a standard in India. Microsoft said it respect's the government's decision. There were only three options `Yes', `No' and `Abstain' to be taken and we respect the government's decision, Microsoft's legal affairs head Rakesh Bakshi said. He, however, added that India's 'No' vote will become a 'Yes' if Microsoft is able to resolve all technical issues with OOXML before the ballot resolution committee of ISO. Prof DB Phatak of IIT Mumbai, who was instrumental in conducting the meetings, looked relieved after being flooded with calls from both camps over the week. Speaking to ET outside the BIS premises, the Microsoft camp complained that when ODF was being standardised by ISO, they did not oppose it and now the ODF camp refused to return the favour. ODF supporters said they would have no problems with OOXML if all the 200 technical issues were taken care of. Amongst hectic lobbying from both camps, the US government on Thursday said that it will abstain from voting. China has already voted a 'No' against Microsoft, while Malaysia, Denmark and Switzerland are supporting the software major. A global alliance of Sun-IBM, Oracle, Google, Red Hat have ganged up against Microsoft which is being supported by Apple, Quark, Accenture and Novell. On Indian soil, Infosys, HCL, Skelta, Sonata Software and Sify have come out in support of Microsoft. September 2 is the last date to submit the vote with comments to ISO. About 123 counties are participating in the vote. Votes from most are still to come. Canada, Czech Republic, Iran, Japan, Libya, Cuba, New Zealand, UK are likely to back the IBM-Sun's ODF Alliance. On the other hand, Belgium, Finland, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Singapore, Korea, France and Australia are likely to abstain from voting. -- Frederick Noronha Journalist http://fn.goa-india.org E: [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] P: +91-832-2409490 M: +91-9970157402 Yahoo: fredericknoronha Skype: fredericknoronha GTalk: fredericknoronha 784, Sonarbhat, Near Lourdes Convent, Saligao 403511 Goa India ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Next Event: http://freed.in - September 28-29, 2007 Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/
[ilugd] The Perfect Replacement For MP3 (Stanley Thomas' blog)
Feedback, praise, brickbats to: Stanley Thomas [EMAIL PROTECTED], -- Forwarded message -- http://perfector.wordpress.com/ The Perfect Replacement For MP3 Digital music is probably the only kind of music everybody is listening to these days. The reason being that its smaller in size and thus makes it easy to share and store. Imagine downloading a 4 minute track thats approximately 40 Mb in size in a place where access to the internet is terrible and costs a bomb (thats usually the case in most places in the world). Thankfully, compression algorithms exists that can compress the same audio track to one-tenth its size, thus we do not have to imagine the above. Few weeks back I downloaded 2 albums, My Dying Bride - A Line Of Deathless Kings and Slayer - Christ Illusion. The Slayer album was ripped at a very low bitrate and was not sounding too good. The album contained 14 tracks and obviously it was ripped at a lower bitrate to reduce its size. Many thanks to all the people who shared the album with me, but it was just not to my liking. There was no quality and I was furious because it took me a long time to download the album as not many people were sharing it. Boy, what a waste of time and a killer of expectation. Well thats what made me write this. Mp3 is an audio compression format that has taken the world by a storm. Mp3 is almost a synonym for music nowadays as Google is for search. Now, here comes the problem.. MP3 was good at one point in time, but not anymore. What's better? OGG VORBIS. AAC, Lame, MP3Pro neither of 'em match up to Ogg Vorbis' standards. Don't take my word for it, you can do simple tests to prove it. Take your favorite audio cd, select a track that you have heard a million times and don't mind listening to a hundred more and rip it to ogg vorbis as well as to mp3. Compare the mp3 and the ogg file to the track on the cd by listening, well now you know what I'm talking about. The ogg file is a much faithful reproduction of the cd than the mp3. An ogg file of 80kbps (bitrate) is equivalent to an mp3 encoded at 128kbps. Hey, there is still one more issue called size. Ofcourse here again the ogg file beats the mp3 hollow. For the same size one can achieve a higher bitrate with ogg vorbis than with mp3. The best part ogg vorbis by default encodes in variable bitrate (which deliveres better quality than constant bitrate). Isn't this a great piece of information for any music lover? There are a more advantages in using ogg. Ogg is patent-free. Ok, we are just not bothered about patents here in India, but in this case we have to be because a lot of music that we listen to everyday is coming from outside India. Musicians who sell their songs in mp3 have to pay royalties. They could just save a bit more of cash by selling all over the world their songs in ogg vorbis. Not just does it benefit them but it also benefits listeners and fans. But do you think that they are seriously bothered? Music is become a business rather than an art form. Nobody cares about the quality of music their fans are listening to as long as they are minting big bucks and are being voted for the Grammy's. Portable players like ipod's also have to pay royalties but still are unwilling to support patent-free formats like ogg. Why? Because they too are doing well in selling their products. Neither the musician nor the manufacturers of players are bothered about the listener. As a guy on one of the mailing lists puts it if only all the music in china was ripped into ogg vorbis, surely then a lot of players would be supporting it. There are a few portable players available that support ogg vorbis. Many of the game developers are using ogg vorbis and are very happy with the quality of sound and even happier because they are getting away without paying licenses. e.g. Doom 3. Ogg is only the container just like avi. It can contain several data streams at once, like video and the corresponding audio. Vorbis is the name of an open source audio compression format. There exists Theora for video compression and Speex for speech. I haven't really tried these though. If you notice I haven't mentioned anything about Windows Media Audio (wma) and Real Audio (ra), thats because I find these to be very cheap proprietary formats. I would never recommend these to any music lover. The best part about using ogg is that its open source. A lot of intense development will continue to take place to ensure that ogg vorbis remains the best. Its going to be literally impossible for any other proprietary format to beat ogg in the future. Almost all linux distributions play ogg out of the box. Things are looking bright for ogg, especially with all the Dell machines being sold with Ubuntu, we can expect a lot of vorbis encoded music from the US. Happy listening! [ilugd] Stanley Thomas' blog: GNU/Linux Performance Tweaks
/inittab' and issue the command init q as root to make changes done without rebooting. In most of the modern machines with 512MB and more ram a lot of swapping is not required. The more the swapping done when there is enough ram to do the job is a waste of performance. The default value is vm.swappiness=60. To change it issue echo 'vm.swappiness=value' /etc/sysctl.conf as root. Then issue #swapoff -a and #swapon -a. Generally a value from 20-30 is great for most modern machines. Find the right value that suits your needs. The swap partition has to be created roughly in the middle of the harddisk for it to be easily accessed. Since the swap partition is accessed in very short bursts occasionally its the best option. Yeah, this is not one of those easily experimentable suggestions. Coming to the harddisk.. Oh no, this is my most hated piece of hardware in a computer. It has moving parts, its unreliable and its a pain to maintain. Sometimes i wish i had an external usb hub with max capacity thumb drives built into it to use as a storage medium. I guess it would be enough for my day to day work. I dont know if it would be faster than a 1 rpm hdd, but im sure its much more reliable because it can withstand more shocks, it does not heat up as much and it has no moving parts. To increase hdd performance there's nothing better than 'hdparm'. It tests speeds of the drive and give you a quite a bit of control over the hdd's parameters. With 'hdparm' you can set the readahead, configure power management, enable/disable dma, display drive geometry, speed up/down the head movement, set spindown time and a whole lot of other neat stuff. Once you have got all options to your liking, add it to the end of '/etc/rc.sysinit' so that it gets executed towards the end of the system's booting process. For example a line like this could be added: hdparm -a1024 -c3 -d1 -m16 /dev/hda Like i said earlier there are a lot of ways to improve the system's performance. These are only a few i can think of. Try out 'powertweak' its good. Readahead, preload, upstart, teardown are good for boot-up, shutdown, and faster application loading times. Do not forget to inform me of something that i could add to this list. June 15th, 2007 Categories: Linux = Desktop . Author: stan . [ilugd] 'Software ought to be free, free, free' (http://infotech.indiatimes.com/)
http://infotech.indiatimes.com/Tech_News/News/Software/Software_ought_to_be_free_free_free/articleshow/msid-2102785,curpg-1.cms 'Software ought to be free, free, free' IANS[WEDNESDAY, JUNE 06, 2007 01:15:17 PM] 'Software ought to be free, free, free' IANS[ WEDNESDAY, JUNE 06, 2007 01:15:17 PM] NEW DELHI: Eben Moglen, an architect of the GNU General Public License and one of the greatest legal minds in the world of free software, is currently touring India on a mission to promote his message: anything that is worth copying is worth sharing. Hacker-turned-law-professor Moglen has argued that free software is a fundamental requirement for a free society over-dependent on technical devices. Moglen, professor of law and legal history at Columbia University, served pro bono as general counsel for the Free Software Foundation. He is also the chairman of Software Freedom Law Center. New Delhi-based lawyer Mishi Choudhary has been working to build an India branch of the Software Freedom Law Center. Called the 'legal guardian of the Free Software movement', Moglen now oversees the crafting of the crucial General Public License, version 3. Free software is at the other extreme away from proprietorial software. Legal protection for creating and sharing free software is seen as having become more important at times when dominant market player Microsoft has alleged patent violations by the free software camp. The GNU General Public License is a widely used free software license, originally written by Richard Stallman for the GNU project. Moglen is the legal brain behind strengthening the GPL and making sure it works. GPL allows users of a free software computer programme the rights for it to be used, studied and modified without restriction, and be copied and redistributed in a way that ensure that further recipients also have these freedoms. Version 3 of the GPL (GPLv3) is being written by Richard Stallman, with legal counsel from Eben Moglen and his Software Freedom Law Center. Moglen was in India last year too, when he revved up activities for a Software Freedom Law Centre in New Delhi. In India this time, Moglen spends two weeks till mid-June, meeting policy makers, lawyers and software professionals. India is itself seen as a fast-rising battleground, where the growing army of software programmers will crucially help decide the software future of the planet, whether it turns proprietorial or free. Others like free software movement founder Stallman and Microsoft founder Bill Gates have also been making repeated trips to India in recent years. Free software enthusiasts term proprietorial software unfree and the political influence of this technology movement is visible from the logo of the Free Software Foundation-India, which has a computer-age CD shaped in the form of a spinning-wheel charkha (the symbol of Indian independence) and a motto which says weave your own code. Moglen holds a discussion on 'The Death of Proprietary Culture' at Thiruvananthapuram (June 6) and holds an address again on software patents in New Delhi (June 9). On June 11, he moves to Hyderabad, to address the legal fraternity at the Andhra Pradesh High Court and give a talk at the NALSAR University of Law. One of the purposes of his visit is setting up (of the Software Freedom Law Centre in New Delhi), said Free Software Foundation-India campaigner Arun M. In Thiruvananthapuram there will also be a symposium on June 6 on Patents, Copyrights and Knowledge Commons organised by Kerala State Planning Board, Kerala State IT Mission and Free Software Foundation of India, organisers of the event announced. While speaking in New Delhi, during his August 2006 visit, Moglen had remarked: Anything that is worth copying is worth sharing. He also argued: The more we give away, the richer we become. He argues that the idea of proprietary software is as ludicrous as having proprietary mathematics or proprietary geometry. This would convert the subjects from something you can learn into something you must buy. Moglen has criticised what he calls the reification of selfishness. He has said: A world full of computers which you can't understand, can't fix and can't use (because it is controlled by inaccessible proprietary software) is a world controlled by machines. He also disapproves of trends that result in excluding people from knowledge, and has called for a sensible respect for both the creators and users of the software code. [ilugd] LUGRadio, OpenMoko, and more....
Saturday, Feb 24, 2007's meeting at Goa Science Centre focussed on these issues: * Demo of LUGRadio programmes via a Chinese-clone of the iPod. http://www.lugradio.org/episodes.rss Feedback: difficulty in following the programmes, and a bit of excessive laughter on the episode we were tuned into. * Talking about devices, Arvind suggested the OpenMoko phone http://www.openmoko.com/ Notice to Developers If you are interested in developing Free Software applications for the OpenMoko platform, please send information regarding embedded Linux projects you have contributed to, and the work you have done to [EMAIL PROTECTED] We had some hardware issues that set us back about a month. But now we're back on track and should start shipping in February. All of our efforts are focused on getting the device out, so please forgive our delays in replying to your emails. * Queries about web-to-SMS international gateways. Some suggested using Yahoo (only Windows compatible). BSNL is offering SMS within India for 40 paisa per SMS. * Brief discussion about using 'sleep' mode under GNU/Linux, while transporting laptop with a GNU/Linux distro. * Fedora and its marketing strategies. * Debate about new distros. Stanley is on the search for some. * Some of us remembered Prakash Advani, earlier with FreeOS.com and now with Novell. He has an interesting photo blog. See: http://cityblogger.com/archives/category/photography/ * We also thought of the photography work of Tariq Sani (Nagpur) and Kalyan Varma (Bangalore), two other FLOSS techies. http://tariquesani.net/ http://www.kalyanvarma.net/photography/ * We had a brief discussion on the Simputer and also the plans of Geodesic, where Atul Chitnis is now vice-president See http://groups.yahoo.com/group/simputer The visit of Dr Vinay Deshpande to Goa was remembered too. There was a debate over the $100 computer (OLPC), and whether the it was really unsuted to India, or whether the opposition to it could be from those eager to block the spread of Free Software/Open Source among the younger generation. See http://www.laptop.org/ or http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Home * Someone raised the question about the Mobilis. The Mobilis, is Encore's inexpensive mobile PC http://www.engadget.com/2005/05/11/the-mobilis-encores-inexpensive-mobile-pc/ * Arvind was keen to get access to the book 'Linux Kernel: In A Nutshell' Apologies to the lady who missed our meeting, because we started late! Ashwin Naik phoned, and was eager to come to meetup (at the bhel-puri informal meet-up following the indoors meet at the Goa Science Centre, Panjim). [ilugd] Web based feed aggregators -- Gregarius vs Planet (by Derek Cordeiro)
http://derek.profusehost.net/ Web based feed aggregators -- Gregarius vs Planet Wed, 2006-12-13 19:29 — Derek Cordeiro It has been a while that Gregarius has been set up on feeds.goa-india.org and has been working pretty fine with minor downtime due to mysql and memory issues. Today I have set up Planet at planet.goa-india.org. How do these two feed readers compare? Gregarius is a PHP/MySQL based script. Its got buzzwords written all over... Ajax! Pros: * Web based admin with adding a feed with just about one click * support for themes * support for plugins * opml import/export makes switching to Gregarius a piece of cake * support for tags and categories * additional functionality like sticky articles, flagged articles, etc Cons: * Requires MySQL database * requires cron Planet is a python based feed reader powering a lot of planets Pros: * setting up is very straightforward for a geek.(just a few commands will get it done) * support for Author Photos * requires only python 2.2 * generates static html output(easier on the server) Cons: * No Web based admin, feeds have to be added to a config file. * requires cron. * no theme switching available, templates are available though. * since feeds have to be added manually, there is no direct opml import. * no readily available plugins or themes(to my knowledge) Please visit the sites http://feeds.goa-india.org/ and http://planet.goa-india.org/ and give your opinion -- FN M: 0091 9822122436 P: +91-832-240-9490 (after 1300IST please) http://fn.goa-india.org http://fredericknoronha.wordpress.com 7500+ sharable pics from Goa http://www.flickr.com/photos/fn-goa/ ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/

[ilugd] Fwd: Choice of scripting language on http://courtnic.nic.in
-- Forwarded message -- From: Mahesh T. Pai [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: 07-Feb-2007 21:56 Subject: Choice of scripting language on http://courtnic.nic.in To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sirs, I am trying to view http://www.courtnic.nic.in, and find that the information relating to Kerala High Court cannot be accessed. I find that the pages use VB script, and I would like to remind you that VB Script is a scripting language specific to Microsoft Internet Explorer. As an organisation in charge of maintaining the web pages of several (almost all), I trust to know already that Microsoft's Internet Explorer is not the only web browser used by citizens of India, and that Microsoft's Internet Explorer will run only on Microsoft's operating system. By using technologies which are specific to vendors, the web pages are shutting out users of other, competing operating systems, and I submit, with due respect that your actions amount to unduly favouring Microsoft Corporation. As a citizen (and a former lawyer) who does not have access to, or afford software from Microsoft, (and avoids products from Microsoft by choice) your use of VB Script is excluding me from the information of web site, and thus, you are discriminating against me. As a state organisation, you have the obligation to ensure that your choice of technology does not compel citizens to use software from any particular vendor. Hence, I humbly request you to discontinue VBScript on the about site at the earliest, and trust that I will not have to take this matter up in judiciary. With Warm Regards, Mahesh T. [ilugd] Internet par Khawateen Ki Masroofiat / What do (Pakistani) women do online
Does anyone know a FLOSS tool or solution that would allow me to convert Urdu into Roman script text? Was thinking that articles like these would be of wider interest in South Asia (where Urdu/Hindustani/Hindi can be followed beyond script differences). --FN Internet par Khawateen Ki Masroofiat What do (Pakistani) women do online The article, by Reba Shahid, focuses on how Pakistani women from different walks of life and age groups utilise the internet. It asks random women girls...an engineeer, the naib-nazima (next to the mayor) of Karachi, a journalist, students, a model, an educationist about what do they do online. Farah Mahmood, an engineer teaches at FAST Peshawar. She started using the internet in 1999-2000 when she was in college. Initially her internet usage was limited to a half an hour or an hour of surfing, mostly for entertainment purpose. Searching for game cheats and cracks online for PC games was a prime activity in those initial days She says: I was quite ignorant of the true potential of the internet those days and actually no one taught me (my elder brother won't let me use the computer because long before I was in college I some how screwed up the system, so he put on password which I always cracked) how to use it either, I just learned how to use computer and internet myself and only later figured out that internet has a lot to offer other then what I saw during my early days of usage. Over the years Farah's internet usage has increased to an average of 6 hours daily…mainly at her workplace (which has an always on broadband connection). Internet usage at home is one to two hours on an average working day. But on a holidays it can be four to five hours at home throughout the day. More interviews too... [ilugd] Huge New Study On Free/Open Software
http://blog.wired.com/monkeybites/2007/01/huge_new_study_.html Wednesday, 17 January 2007 Huge New Study On Free/Open Software Topic: software There's an interesting, albeit rather long, new study available from an international, interdisciplinary team of researchers that documents Free/Libre/Open Source Software (FLOSS) and its economic influences on the EU. The full text of the 287 page report, entitled Economic impact of open source software on innovation and the competitiveness of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector in the EU, is available online (PDF). The report provides the most thorough and comprehensive look at the contributions of the FLOSS community that I've ever seen. While most of the statics and numbers are geared toward the EU and European nations in general (the lead contractor of the study was UNU-MERIT from the Netherlands), the study nevertheless provides a fascinating look at free software and its impact on the world at large. Particularly stunning is the estimated time to reproduce this software in proprietary format (131,000 person years) and the estimated amount of donated programming effort in monetary terms (800 million Euros per year). Here's some more highlights pulled straight from the text (emphasis mine): * Almost two-thirds of FLOSS software is still written by individuals; firms contribute about 15% and other institutions another 20%. * Europe is the leading region in terms of globally collaborating FLOSS software developers, and leads in terms of global project leaders, followed closely by North America (interestingly, more in the East Coast than the West). Asia and Latin America. * The existing base of quality FLOSS applications with reasonable quality control and distribution would cost firms almost Euro 12 billion to reproduce internally. This code base has been doubling every 18-24 months over the past eight years, and this growth is projected to continue for several more years. * This existing base of FLOSS software represents a lower bound of about 131 000 real person-years of effort that has been devoted exclusively by programmers. As this is mostly by individuals not directly paid for development, it represents a significant gap in national accounts of productivity. Annualised and adjusted for growth this represents at least Euro 800 million in voluntary contribution from programmers alone each year, of which nearly half are based in Europe. * Firms have invested an estimated Euro 1.2 billion in developing FLOSS software that is made freely available. Such firms represent in total at least 565 000 jobs and Euro 263 billion in annual revenue. Contributing firms are from several non-IT (but often ICT intensive) sectors, and tend to have much higher revenues than non-contributing firms. * Defined broadly, FLOSS-related services could reach a 32% share of all IT services by 2010, and the FLOSS-related share of the economy could reach 4% of European GDP by 2010. * Proprietary packaged software firms account for well below 10% of employment of software developers in the U.S., and IT user firm -- FN M: 0091 9822122436 P: +91-832-240-9490 (after 1300IST please) http://fn.goa-india.org http://fredericknoronha.wordpress.com ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/

Needless to say, I don't plan to charge (since the server space was made available free by a geek in London ... and the software comes for free). If you would like to start and run some course from here, just get in touch. Take a look at http://elearning.goa-india.org/ and ask me to create a password for you, with suitable permissions. FN PS: Thanks to Derek, an engineering student, for setting up Moodle! MOODLE: Moodle is a free software/open source e-learning platform (also known as a Course Management System (CMS) or Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)). [ilugd] Re QUERY: Will this solution work with a Reliance ZTE datacard?
Nothing quite works with the ZTE card. Am on the point of giving up. Have written to ZTE [EMAIL PROTECTED] The Sierra Wireless AirCard 555 does work though, and it's setup is documented in the July 2006 issue of LINUX FOR YOU (New Delhi). On the #linux-india chatroom on Freenode, someone mentioned that the Sierra card costs three times as much. But Reliance told me (on the phone) that it is also sold at the same price (Rs 5000). It would make a lot of sense if ZTE had worked out some solution for the GNU/Linux operating system. Incidentally, I came much further on the SuSE operating system (sorry, this is a politically incorrect thing to now say, thanks to Novell!!!) than I did with Ubuntu. We tried everything. Different init strings (including those suggested on the Windows-only setup that comes on the mini-CD enclosed) and blacklisting some possibly-conflicting modules. But nothing much worked. So, in a word: if you want to go wireless on Reliance... don't go ZTE. At least not until China's second largest telecom hardware company decides to be more GNU/Linux friendly. Am not sure, but was told that Huawei also works, but haven't tried or seen this out myself. Just sharing this in case others are stuck at the same point that I have (along with others like Prof Prabhat Ranjan, who has tried quite a bit and given some useful online tips too). Believe In... writes Khairil Yusof in MyOSS Community of Malaysia http://www.iosn.net/Members/kaeru/blog/being-involved - Let's be clear. MyOSS community consists of students and developers. Hard pressed for time and other resources. Every now and again, somebody comes up and says that the community ought to do something. They've done a lot already: http://my-opensource.org http://www.my-opensource.org/oss-faq.html http://myoss.iosn.net/ http://foss.org.my Of course these students and developers should give up what little personal time they have left to do what other people tell them to do. I take this personally, because whenever this comes up, it usually comes down to a few people (aizat, ditesh, nsh) who do real things (papers, presenting at conferences and talks, organising meetups). It's unfair to ask any more of them. This won't be the last time we hear such requests, but what I would like to see next time is something along the lines, I want to do this guys, and have spent some time doing it and would like the community to help me out. Taking responsibility for something you believe in is a much better attitude, then just throwing it to the community. - IOSN NEWSLETTER: FOSS in Asia-Pacific is edited by Frederick Noronha -- http://fn.goa-india.org -- and supported by the International Open Source Network -- http://www.iosn.net IOSN promotes the adoption of free/open source software, open standards and open content for sustainable human development in the Asia-Pacific region. [ilugd] India lays down 'open' challenge
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4764565.stm Last Updated: Friday, 12 May 2006, 11:32 GMT 12:32 UK India lays down 'open' challenge After his first trip to India, regular columnist Bill Thompson looks forward to the end of western domination of the free software community Indian computer programmer India's programmers are writing code to meet their own needs The five of us bounced out of the restaurant at around 10, after a great meal, some beers and the usual arguments about preferred programming languages, the future of free and open source software and the merits of Terry Pratchett's later works. It was a warm night so we crossed the street to get something to cool us down - not ice cream, but the best kulfi in the Defence Colony, one of the hippest areas in downtown New Delhi. It was my last night in India after four days making Digital Planet specials with the World Service. My new friends from the Delhi Linux User Group had dragged me out of my luxurious business hotel into the real city for a meal. The sizzling paneer and noodles were excellent. The beer was cold. And the kulfi was as good as Raj had promised. But even better was the chance to make a connection with a group of people outside the US and Europe who are working with the Linux operating system. Indian problems I'd come to India with the sense that, like Brazil and other countries outside the West that are taking free software seriously, India is moving into a new phase in its use of free and open source software. These guys - and it was a boy's night out, though there are women members of the group too - are using the freedom which the Linux distribution licence gives them to build tools and technologies for themselves. They don't have to wait for a far-distant company to decide whether their market is big enough or commercially viable. If they need code that meets their specific needs, they can just write it themselves. They are certainly going beyond the point where they take code from the US and Europe and spend their effort localising it by adding support for local languages. [Bill Thompson: Free software provides a bridge between the affluence of the West and the poverty of most of the world's population.] But according to Raj and Mary, both Linux experts, Indian coders are still isolated from each other, and although they contribute to many projects there is no real focus on solving Indian problems. The website of the Free Software Foundation of India lists a few dozen India-based projects, but there is apparently a long way to go before a real free software community emerges. And while Government support for free software is genuine, government computer departments do not contribute to other projects and do not make their work available for others to build on. The government just sees free software as a way to save on licenses. This is a shame, as there is a political dimension to the use of free software which will be very important for India and other developing countries. Liberal Origins Until now free and open source software has been one of the ways in which the US spread its values around the world, the soft guy approach that seems to oppose, but in fact is symbiotic with hard-edged capitalism on the Microsoft and Intel model. Both are firmly embedded in US cultural values, and the free market is as important to Linux as it is to Microsoft. Linus Torvalds Linus Torvalds: creator of Linux If we consider its origins within the post-hippy hacker culture of MIT then we can see that free software is as parasitic on the larger computer industry and its capitalist ethos as the early hippies were on their wealthy middle-class parents and their Protestant work ethic. All that nice code won't run unless Intel and AMD, neither of whom is particularly noted for being soft and cuddly, continue to make the processors and Dell and Sony continue to squeeze component suppliers and ship the systems. In 1999 Richard Stallman the originator of free software, wrote that he saw 'no social imperative for free hardware designs like the imperative for free software', so the situation clearly does not bother him. Yet, as often happens when the US tries to impose a particular point of view on the world, the results can be the opposite of what was intended. Just as the continued boycott of Cuba after the Soviet Union collapsed forced Castro into alliances with other Latin American countries and has helped promote new left-leaning governments across the continent, so the desire to spread US liberal values through free software may have unexpected consequences. Cultural shift Stallman, Linus Torvalds and Eric Raymond, the three big thinkers behind free/libre/open source software - and one should always be suspicious of any movement that so fails to reconcile its divisions that it needs three names - may have unleashed a monster that will consume them. Because until now the developed world could take the code provided
[ilugd] Coming soon! *The Code Breakers* (BBC)
COMING SOON! The Code Breakers - A BBC World Documentary on Free/Open Source Software and Development COMING SOON! The Code Breakers A BBC World Documentary on Free/Open Source Software and Development http://www.apdip.net/news/fossdoc == The famous digital divide is getting wider. A two-part documentary, The Code Breakers, to be aired on BBC World starting 10 May 2006 examines whether free/open source software (FOSS) might be the bridge? FOSS contains 'source code' that can be used, copied, studied, modified and redistributed without restriction. It has been around for over 20 years but most PC owners are not aware that the Internet search engines and many computer applications run on FOSS. It's not that FOSS has had a bad press, it has had no press because there is no company that 'owns' it, says executive producer Robert Lamb. But we found that in the computer industry and among the afficionados, it is well known and its virtues well understood. The crew of the independent producers who made the film went to nearly a dozen countries around the world to see how the adoption of FOSS presents opportunities for industry and capacity development, software piracy reduction, and localization and customization for diverse cultural and development needs. Stories from The Code Breakers include computer and Internet access for school children in Africa, reaching the poor in Brazil, tortoise breeding programmes in the Galapagos, connecting villages in Spain, and disaster management in Sri Lanka. The documentary also includes interviews from key figures around the world. Intel, IBM, Sun and Microsoft all seem to agree that FOSS is a welcome presence in computer software. According to Jonathan Murray of Microsoft The Open Source community stimulates innovation in software, it's something that frankly we feel very good about and it's something that we absolutely see as being a partnership with Microsoft. BBC World will air the two-part documentary at the following times: Episode One Wednesday 10 May 19:30 GMT Thursday 11 May 09:30 GMT Friday 12 May 16:30 GMT Monday 15 May 01:30 and 07:30 GMT Episode Two Wednesday 17 May 19:30 GMT Thursday 18 May 09:30 GMT Friday 19 May 16:30 GMT Monday 22 May 01:30 and 07:30 GMT For local times, please lookup your country in the TV Listings on BBC World's website http://www.bbcworld.com/content/template_tvlistings.asp?pageid=668. [ilugd] Internet, tech skills growing quietly in Goa...
INTERNET, TECH SKILLS GROWING QUIETLY IN GOA PANJIM, April 30: Goa's BSNL internet service provider is already providing some 3000 broadband connections in the state, and roughly another 24,000 people dial-up to get access the Net using this central government-run service. These figures emerged during an informal discussion at the monthly meeting of the India Linux Users Group (Goa), a network promoting Free Software and Open Source in the state. ILUG-Goa, which holds its meetings usually on the fourth Saturday of each month at the Goa Science Centre at Miramar, sees a range of tech issues -- usually directly related to Free Software and Open Source in Goa. During it's meet on April 29, a range of issues came up for discussion, from how to partition your hard-disk (to install GNU/Linux side-by-side with Windows), to software tools to ehance productivity, and various internet and broadband options available to users in diverse parts of Goa. For instance, there are some useful Free Software tools to monitor your bandwidth usage on BSNL's broadband. One such tool is available for free download at http://tinyurl.com/qgu9p Called the Data One Broadband Statistics, this is a screen-scraper written using Perl to download usage statistics of BSNL's Data One (www.bsnl.co.in/service/dataone.htm) broadband service and total it. Generally, BSNL (www.bsnl.co.in) allows only the Microsoft-based IE and has no monthly total. But trust Indian software talent to find a work-around. This solution comes from the Free Software/Open Source network in Chennai. Meanwhile, the Goa free software network stays connected and announces its event via http://iluggoaannounce.notlong.com There are no fees for joining, all are welcome, and encouraged to form parallel user-groups in diverse parts of the state. Meanwhile, the Fedora Core 5 Free Software distribution has just become available on DVD in Goa. Number of foreign magazines are also available. Members of ILUG-Goa such as engineer Bijon Shaha and software pro Arvind Yadav gave diverse views on techies-only distros like 'Gentoo'. Debopriyo 'DP' Sarkar pointed to a 'mindmap' of various Free Software distributions or 'distros' available, which was illustrated at linuxhelp.blogspot.com Earlier, there was a brief presentation on FreeMind. FreeMind is a premier free mind-mapping software written in Java. It has the potential of playing the role of a high productivity tool. Operation and navigation of FreeMind is faster because of one-click fold/unfold and follow link operations. Other members raised a range of issues -- from how to get started in GNU/Linux, to playing around with tools like StumbleUpon, and how to encourage Free Software usage in schools and educational institutions. Remy Furtado of Rosary College, Navelim expressed an interest in working on the Free Software tool Moodle, ideal for distance education, as the Goa University moves to a pattern of semisterisation. Goa Engineering College's Prof George Easaw has done work on this platform, as have others. Reacting unofficially, BSNL officials said Goa now had six STMS 155 MBps connectivity, which was resulting in a speedy expansion of broadband to many parts of the state. But for broadband facilities to become available in village areas, at least 60 subscribers were needed to make operations viable. So far, broadband from BSNL is available in a growing number of areas in Goa: Panjim, Vasco (except Cortalim, but including Sada, Mangor, Bogmalo, Sancoale and other areas), Ponda, Bambolim, Merces, Dona Paula, Porvorim, Mapusa town, Calangute-Candolim, and Saligao, among others. Equipment has already been installed in Aldona exchange, and broadband facilities are expected to go functional -- - | India Linux Users' Group, Goa | | Join the friendly user group | | Mail list http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ilug-goa/join | -- | | http://groups.yahoo.com/group/teach-yourself-linux| | http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ilug-goa-announce | | http://www.iosn.net/country/india/organizations/ilug-goa/ | - ,, / \.-. * SOFTWARE ((__-^^-,-^^-__)) (. .) * FREEDOM `-_---' `---_-' / V \ * SHARING `--|o` 'o|--' // \\ \ ` / /( )\ KNOWLEDGE IS POWER ): :( '.^^_^^.' No Software Patents People's Democracy (Weekly Organ of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Vol. XXIX No. 50 December 11, 2005 No Software Patents Govt Assures FSF India UNION minister of commerce and industries, Kamal Nath has assured that the Indian government is committed to its stand of not allowing software patenting for the time being and that it would reiterate this stand in the forthcoming meeting of WTO ministerial at Hong Kong. This was conveyed to a delegation of Free Software Foundation of India (FSF India), which met the minister on December 6 in New Delhi and discussed with him about the proposal for software patenting which came up early this year. It comprised M Arun, secretary and Y Kiran Chandra, secretary FSF AP Chapter. CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and MP, Sitaram Yechury and CPI(M) central committee member and MP, P Madhu accompanied the delegation. A memorandum was also submitted to the minister on this issue. In a statement released to the press, the FSF India representatives termed the discussion with the minister as fruitful. The minister informed the delegation about his opinion that copyright provides reasonable protection for the software industry. However, pointing out that there was a strong demand from sections of the Indian IT industry to allow the patenting of software in conjunction with hardware, the minister expressed the need to find a via media between arguments of different groups. The FSF India stated that in the coming days it will interact with industries, particularly small and medium industries, to highlight the harmful effects of generic software patenting and also in order to understand the needs of the industry. It would be working with the industry to find a via media which will protect the larger social interests and at the same time protecting economic interest of industries, the statement assured. [ilugd] COMMENT: Google may not go Simputer way
From HINDUSTAN TIMES January 5, 2006 GOOGLE MAY NOT GO SIMPUTER WAY Venkatesh Ganesh Mumbai, January 4 GOOGLE's ENTRY into the sub-Rs 10,000 PC market has rattled the cage of existing players. But the search-engine giant's entry into the hardware sector in India with a thin-client model (a PC with no hard disk and computing) may not be a walkover. HT was the first to report on December 15, 2005 about the Google's plans to enter the Indian market with thin-client model. Early entrants like the Simputer and other low-cost PCs are being still viewed skeptically. Globally too, thin-clients have managed to make only small inroads. But the real fight is for a different space. Google appears to be looking to dethrone Microsoft from its desktop throne. Thin clients have been viewed in a cautious manner primarily due to the price factor. But with Google entering the fray at such an attractive price point, things might change, says Nitin Mukadam, an e-commerce consultant. The advantage with thin clients is that the storage happens in a central server. For example, all data and applications (like word processors, spreadsheets, etc) are hosted in a central server. This solves a lot of problems right from storage to viruses. Also, with bandwidth prices coming down, the commercial viability of a thin-client device is now more feasible. Then, therere are issues with regards to Random Access Memory (RAM) that can run with even small memory space. Industry analysts opine that Google has a rough road ahead. Delivering complete functionality in a thin-client is most challenging, Sameer Kochhar CEO of Skotch told the Hindustan Times. Translated, it would imply that since Windows is the pre-dominant operating system, operating on non-Windows system would take some getting used to (Google would bundle Linux-based applications). Sanjeev Sharma, managing director, Fujusan Technologies, an Indian representative of Fujitsu, the Japanese IT and communication solution provider, feels that the acceptance of a device of this kind will be predominantly in the small office-home office.(ENDS) ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/

[ilugd] Using [GNU]Linux with Kids from 3 to 7 -- an introduction
The Community-Linux Training Centre: Practice Briefing 2 Using Linux with Kids from 3 to 7 – an introduction By the Free Range Comunity-Linux Training Centre Project, CLTC-P02, version 1.1, December 2004. email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] web: http://www.fraw.org.uk/cltc/ Using computers with kids can be problematic. On Windows machines problems arise when they start fooling around with system files or donâ €™t respond appropriately to warning messages. By contrast, the greater security provided by Linux means kids can play, largely unsupervised, with little risk to the system. This briefing looks at various aspects of using Linux with kids – both in terms of software and playing with hardware. Gnu/Linux is a really good computer operating system – especially if you like playing with networks or programming languages. But there is one area where both the resources available with Linux distributions, and the efforts of the Linux support community to provide assistance, are a little thin – using Linux with young children. This briefing has been developed to address this shortfall in support. The development of this briefing has not been a formal study. It has emerged as a result of the experience gained in studying how two young children (right) have been able to learn how to use the computer, and the functions of the graphical desktop. What follows is therefore a documentation of the knowledge gained from observation rather than an in-depth study. It is also the reason why this briefing is limited to the ages three to seven. However, it is hoped that the idea presented here will spawn other projects to provide support for the use of Gnu/Linux with young children -- Frederick Noronha 784 Near Convent, Sonarbhat SALIGAO GOA India Independent JournalistTEL: +91-832-2409490 MOBILE: 9822122436 [] Check out my bookmarks at http://del.icio.us/fredericknoronha ... [ilugd] FLOSS 3D animation...
This is something interesting I read in the linux-magazine.com: Not so long ago, professional quality 3D animation required expensive workstations. The software they ran, for example, Maya (Unlimited Vision), cost more than $15,000 early in 2002, and the software technology was hidden behind restictive licenses. What's the 3D animation process? The process starts with modeling the shape of the 3D object. The next stage is texturing, that is, adding a kind of skin. This step gives the model a natural looking surface with light reflexes and a surface structure. UV mapping projects 2D bitmaps (such as wood grains) onto the 3D surface; in its simplest form, this is like posting a bill on an advertising column. The 3D model can then be animated. In the rigging process, joints are added to the figure. The joints allow the the artist to move a complex object like a puppetter moves a puppet. After completing the basic animation scene, the animator adds special effects, such as water, fire, or smoke. The scene is then lit by positioning light sources, just like in conventional movie making. The post production is concerned with optimizing the nearly-finished product, coming it with the movie or video scenes, and adding a soundtrack. Also: Normally, many different programs are used to create a 3D animation. First of all, you need a program to create the 3D models. In most cases, animation and rendering (conversion of finished models to photo-realistic images) are handled by separate programs. Rendering is so vastly complext that it typically requires a specialized tool. Some useful software: Wings3D, simplifying complex shapes http://www.wings3d.com Blender, the only FLOSS program that covers all steps in 3D production http://blender.org [Blender's strengths is its speed, which is superior to commercial products. But Blender mainly uses subwindows that are full of buttons and slide controls. The itnerface design lacks logical consistency. Even such simple functions as cut and paste take some getting used to in Blender, as they use [Alt] + [C] or [Alt] + [V], rather than the more typical [Ctrl] keys. This is due to the fact that Blender was designed as an in-house solution for the NeoGeo animation studio. K3D, one more recent developments in the 3D fields. [ilugd] Some thoughts on LUGs (globally)...
One of the biggest challenges facing LUGs at the moment stems from the fact that a growing number have existed for ten years or more. Many of us know each other quite well, and newcomers often find it difficult to get a word in without feeling that they're somehow offending those to whom their problem seems trivial and not worthy of detailed discussion. Some LUGs occasionally flare up into completely pointless flame wars that start over trivial macho tendencies of many members to prove their technological prowess at every opportunity. This tendency has led to some community fragmentation, with a single group forking into a group for veterans and one for newcomers. The problem is that such segregation comes at a cost and is often detrimental to the overall community because it discourages the involvement of newer members who might in time come to pass valuable information to those who come after. -- Jon Masters, in www.linux-magazine.com January 2006 issue. - ILUG-Goa meets on Dec 17, 2005 (Saturday). Craig Rodrigues [EMAIL PROTECTED] who's an old-time friend in another context (Goa's first Usenet newsgroup soc.culture.indian.goa) had this to say, I am a FreeBSD committer, and PIO (Person of Indian Origin), with roots in Goa. FreeBSD is an open-source project which produces a very high-quality, rock solid, operating system. FreeBSD traces its roots to some of the earliest Unix work done at ATT and the University of California, Berkeley, and is built on solid and proven technology. You can see the history of BSD here: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/~checkout~/src/share/misc/bsd-family-tree Many people from around the world and from different backgrounds contribute to the FreeBSD project, including Indians. * Joseph Koshy ( http://people.freebsd.org/~jkoshy/ ), in Bangalore, contributed a Performance Measurement Framework -- http://people.freebsd.org/~jkoshy/projects/perf-measurement/index.html -- to FreeBSD. Joseph has also contributed other things to FreeBSD. * Mohan Srinivasan [EMAIL PROTECTED] works at Yahoo, and has contributed many fixes to the FreeBSD networking code. FreeBSD is the primary platform that Yahoo operates its servers on, so high performance networking code in FreeBSD is very important to them. You should contact Joseph and Mohan directly, to get the most accurate information about their involvement in FreeBSD, since I might have made some mistakes. As for myself, Craig Rodrigues [EMAIL PROTECTED], I contribute to FreeBSD in different areas. For FreeBSD 6.0, I have contributed bugfixes to various areas of the FreeBSD code. For FreeBSD 7 (which has not been released), I am collaborating with Alexander Kabaev [EMAIL PROTECTED] to port the high performance XFS filesystem to FreeBSD. Unfortunately, we were not able to finish our work for FreeBSD 6. XFS was originally written by SGI (Silicon Graphics Inc.) for their IRIX operating system, but they have ported their code to [GNU]Linux. Alexander and I are working to port this code to FreeBSD, and we have a project web page at: http://people.freebsd.org/~rodrigc/xfs/ [/]o[/]o[/]o[/]o[/]o[/]o[/]o[/]o[/]o[/]o[/] Marco Fioretti [EMAIL PROTECTED] who has worked on the RULE project [1] says he is rebuilding that site from scratch right now, but have also started in another FLOSS-related project. It's the OpenDocument fellowship, its mission and and its petition to add OpenDocument support in Microsoft Office http://opendocumentfellowship.org Says Marco: Please let me know your opinion, and let the news circulate in India as much as possible if they already haven't. You're obviously encouraged to tell people to contact me, and to let me know anything OpenDocument related happening in India. Marco Fioretti OpenDocument Fellowship Committee Member http://opendocumentfellowship.org Everybody's Guide to OpenDocument: www.linuxjournal.com/article/8616 [1] What is the RULE Project about? The problem: Hardware is not cheap. There are plenty of single users, schools and non-profit organizations with null or very little money for computers. Furthermore, PCs pollute a lot, hence they should be used as long as possible. Not with older Free Software, however, which is useless and dangerous: null support, security holes, no IMAP, GPG, HTML4... Our solution: Hardware is only as old as the software it runs. RULE wants to make modern Free Software useable even on 5 or more years old machines, on which current Linux distributions won't
[ilugd] FreeBSD Project Launches FreeBSD 6.
FreeBSD Project Launches FreeBSD 6.0 - Raises the Bar for Open Source Operating Systems Berkeley, CA (PRWEB) November 4, 2005 -- The FreeBSD Project announces the availability of FreeBSD 6.0, an open source operating system derived from BSD UNIX, which offers a powerful alternative to Linux, Solaris, and Windows. FreeBSD enables enterprise organizations to utilize open source technologies that focus on reliability, security, and scalability. Yahoo! is impressed with the performance and stability of FreeBSD 6.0, says David Filo, Yahoo! co-founder. Yahoo! is one of many enterprise companies that rely on the world-renowned stability and performance of the FreeBSD operating system. One of the new features in FreeBSD 6.0 is a multithreaded filesystem, which greatly improves data access times for local disks, RAID configurations, network filesystems, and SANs. Recent performance benchmarks show that FreeBSD 6.0 outperforms Linux in raw data throughput. Additionally, FreeBSD 6.0 extends support for wireless devices such as Intel Centrino and adds supports for the popular new WPA wireless security protocol. Several improvements are incorporated into NDISulator, a component of the operating system that allows Windows network drivers to run natively under FreeBSD. FreeBSD now scales much more efficiently across multiple processor systems. Support for 8 or more processors, such as the new dual core AMD Opteron configurations, gives consumers a viable alternative against more expensive, proprietary hardware platforms and operating systems from IBM, HP, and Sun. About the FreeBSD Project The FreeBSD Project provides a free, open source operating system for several platforms, including Intel x86 and AMD64. FreeBSD is derived from BSD, the version of UNIX developed at UC Berkeley. The unencumbered BSD license permits modification and redistribution of the software while allowing an individual or company to retain intellectual property. ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/

[ilugd] Battleground of ideas: FLOSS debate raises tempers at BytesForAll
Battleground of ideas: FLOSS debate raises tempers at BytesForAll APC member BytesForAll's mailing list[1] recently played host to a strong, and at times polemical, debate on proprietary-versus-FLOSS (Free/Libre and Open Source Software). In this debate, there were these couple of great posts here [2] and here [3], that put things neatly in perspective -- thanks to David Geilhufe who is co-founder of the SocialSourceFoundation.org [4] and Sunil Abraham of Mahiti.org [5]. It all started with a rather critical-of-FLOSS post by University of Manchester's Dr Richard Heeks [6] offering a link to an eDevelopment Briefing titled Free and Open Source Software: A Blind Alley for Developing Countries? [7]. It calls the 1980s shareware FOSS forerunner to have had zero impact, says data from Africa shows only five percent of computers in developing countries have any Open Source software running on them, and notes that proprietorial software dominates even in Cuba... where the US embargo should make conditions highly propitious. Besides, the briefing says that piracy and the limited size of initial purchase price within total cost of software ownership there is actually no evidence of FOSS delivering cost savings. Says the briefing: In particular, proprietary software may not be open source but it is certainly free for the great majority of developing country users, thanks to piracy. It points to the lack of awareness of FOSS in Africa, and the lack of international links needed to be part of an active, global community of like-minded developers. One early response to this brief text came from BytesForAll co-founder Frederick FN Noronha and is here for viewing [8]. It argues, The 5% of computer systems overlooks the role played by FLOSS in servers, in keeping the Internet running, in giving unprecedented access to developers of the Third World to take part in a global movement, and more. This study, argues this post, overlooks the potential of FLOSS in large 'developing' countries like India, China, Brazil and South Africa. It points to another study -- from Finland -- which it says is more open to the benefits of FLOSS in the developing world. See http://www.maailma.kaapeli.fi/FLOSSReport1.0.html FN also adds, By saying 'proprietorial software is free' for the bulk of the 'developing' world, the study is guilty of both tolerating/encouraging the illegally copying of software ('piracy' is a loaded term, unfortunately accepted by academia too) and missing the essence of what Free Software is all about (offering the freedom to be used, copied, studied, modified and redistributed). We are not fighting just for the right to remain 'pirates' Richard RMS Stallman, founder of the Free Software Foundation joining in the debate with these comments. [9] There was a longish debate on benchmarking FLOSS. Javier Sola, a Spanish-Chilean working on Khmer language localisation in Cambodia, added some interesting points [10]. Javier, who works with APC member the Open Forum of Cambodia, argues: Academics should make sure that they look at all factors when they write something like this. In this case the author has not come even close to it. He has, among others, completelly ignored the power of localisation, diminished as techies and amateurs some of the people that have clearer ideas of what is needed for real migration and used anectdotal data for his conclusions. Sunil Abraham argues how proprietorial software could kill -- no exaggeration, due to its delays and restrictions -- in a post-Tsunami situation. He also argues that because Sahana (a Free/Libre and Open Source Software project to cope with disasters) is FOSS, the earthquake stricken people from Pakistan and India don't have to spend money earmarked for food on software. Then, in an almost tongue-in-cheek Sunish manner, he argues that FLOSS increases the responsiveness of an organisation. This is important whether it is peoples lives or greater profits. [11] David Geilhufe has this very interesting response to argue that FLOSS offers viral diffusion (to enable its uncontrolled spread, of course in a positive way), local control and lower barriers to entry. Well put, and very well argued. Here's [12] what David argues eloquently: There is no religious war here, but I think the staunch defenders of proprietary code get stuck on analyzing the software... this isn't the important part. One needs to analyze the innovation and use of software... that, I believe, is where the real ICT impact lies. David's Social Source Foundation [13] is here. It is a nonproft organization that exists to create open source, mission-focused technology for the nonprofit and NGO sector. Another link is the OpenNGO.org [14] network. OpenNGO calls itself an open source project to create a set of web-based tools designed to meet the needs of small U.S. nonprofit organizations and non-governmental organizations across the globe. Meanwhile, another strong debate continued at the
[ilugd] FSFE: Early comment on new Microsoft Shared Source Licenses
Would you believe this? FN Forwarded Message To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [FSFE PR][EN] Early comment on new Microsoft Shared Source Licenses Date: Wed, 19 Oct 2005 13:44:07 -0200 [for immediate release] FSFE: Early comment on new Microsoft Shared Source Licenses Since we so rarely have opportunity to say something positive about Microsoft, let me begin by congratulating them, says Georg Greve, president of Free Software Foundation Europe. Microsoft finally seems to have made a step forward on their long march towards giving their users freedom: of the five licenses published, our cursory first analysis suggests that two of them indeed fulfill the Free Software Definition. According to FSFEs first glance, the Microsoft Permissive License (Ms-PL) and Microsoft Community License (Ms-CL) both appear to satisfy the four freedoms that define Free Software. In particular: The Ms-CL also appears to implement a variation of the Copyleft idea, which was first implemented by the GNU General Public License (GPL). Given previous Microsoft statements about the Copyleft approach and in particular the GNU GPL as 'viral', 'cancerous' and 'communist', seeing Microsoft now publish licenses applying the very same principles seems quite an evolution. Naturally, it is not the publication of licenses, but the publication of software under a Free Software license, that gives people freedom: It is indeed not very useful if every company, administration or author publishes their own license; so it would have been preferrable if Microsoft had made the decision to use the GNU General Public License (GPL) and Lesser General Public License (LGPL) for its Shared Source program. Far more than 50% of Free Software worldwide is published under these licenses, they are very well-known and people trust them for good reason. Microsoft has walked a mile and is now standing mere inches from the GNU (L)GPL: We fully understand that Microsoft is first trying to get the nail of its little toe wet in the Free Software community, and we welcome that, continues Greve. But in the course of time we would prefer to see Microsoft join the large global community of commercial GNU (L)GPL vendors. For now it will be good if Microsoft starts relicensing its portfolio under the Ms-PL or Ms-CL; but we still have to warn people to be careful about the 'Shared Source' label and look at the specific licenses: The other three licenses of the Shared Source program are clearly proprietary and obviously do not qualify as Free Software. Greve finishes. The Free Software Foundations will need more time to study all these licenses and their interactions with other licenses in depth, so this is not a final evaluation -- and the final evaluation may as well reveal problems that were not visible at first sight. Microsoft still has a long way to go, but for now it seems they made a step in the right direction, and the Free Software Foundation Europe hopes they will keep it up. About the Free Software Foundation Europe: The Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE), founded 2001, is a charitable non-governmental organisation dedicated to all aspects of Free Software in Europe. Access to software determines who may participate in a digital society. The the Freedoms to use, copy, modify and redistribute software - as described in the Free Software definition - allow equal participation in the information age. Creating awareness for these issues, securing Free Software politically and legally, and giving people Freedom by supporting development of Free Software are central issues of the FSFE. [ilugd] Free and Open Source Software: A Blind Alley for Developing Countries? [With a comment added by FN]
[This came up for debate on the BytesForAll list at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bytesforall_readers Please check it out there. FN] COMMENT ADDED BY FN: [A rather dismissive paper of Free/Libre and Open Source Software in the so-called 'developing countries'. Needless to say the interest in the 'e-development' community is often out of touch with reality, and what developers are doing at the grassroots. It's often based on hype. But that doesn't mean FLOSS is ineffective! The 5% of computer systems overlooks the role played by FLOSS in servers, in keeping the Internet running, in giving unprecedented access to developers of the Third World to take part in a global movement, and more. By saying proprietorial software is free for the bulk of the 'developing' world, the study is guilty of both tolerating/encouraging the illegally copying of software ('piracy' is a loaded term, unfortunately accepted by academia too) and missing the essence of what Free Software is all about (offering the freedom to be used, copied, studied, modified and redistributed). We are not fighting just for the right to remain 'pirates'... By focussing on Africa, the report probably overlooks the benefits flowing to other 'developing' countries from FLOSS. Including countries like India, China, Brazil, South Africa and a whole lot of other nations located in an intermediate stage of 'development'. Whatever the latest fashion among the development network, FLOSS will probably just continue to make its impact. Significantly, it's growth till now went largely unnoticed by academia, and researchers, till the media-blitz post 1998. --FN] PS: A more detailed and realistic, in my view, study can be found at http://www.maailma.kaapeli.fi/FLOSSReport1.0.html (this poster had a role to play in part of the Maailma report).] -- _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ _/ _/ Frederick Noronha | Independent Journalist | Ph 832.2409490 _/ 784 Saligao 403511 Goa India | [EMAIL PROTECTED] _/ _/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/ -- http://www.manchester.ac.uk/idpm/dig/briefings.htm eDevelopment Briefing No. 1 Development Informatics Group, University of Manchester Free and Open Source Software: A Blind Alley for Developing Countries? There is considerable interest in the e-development community about FOSS: free and open source software. It is argued to be cheaper and more customisable than proprietary software; it is argued to be a potential kick-starter for the local IT industry; it merits a mention in the WSIS Plan of Action. So what is its likely trajectory? We can turn first to historical evidence because we have been here before. In the 1980s, shareware – FOSS' forerunner – was a temporary source of excitement for exactly the same reasons; even attracting the attention of the World Bank. Yet the developmental equation for shareware was Impact = Zero. What of the evidence today? A recent survey on our eGovernment for Development Information Exchange plus survey data from Africai suggest at most 5% of computer systems in developing countries have any open source software running on them, and that is almost entirely represented by Linux. Even in Cuba, where the US embargo should make conditions highly propitious, proprietary software dominatesii. Because of piracy and the limited size of initial purchase price within total cost of software ownership, there is no clear, general evidence of FOSS delivering cost savings. Because, by and large, FOSS means Linux, the benefits of customisation and IT industry kick-start are also nebulous. The lack of strong evidence of FOSS benefits helps explain its lack of success vis-a-vis proprietary products. In particular, proprietary software may not be open source but it is certainly free for the great majority of developing country users, thanks to piracy. Other key factors uncovered include: * Lack of awareness of FOSS: the African evidence suggests most IT managers simply don't know about it. * Poor international links: to work effectively with open source code you need to be part of an active, global community of like-minded developers; links to such communities from developing countries are weak. Donors have moved in with interventions to support FOSS, as recently seen in Tanzania with the development of Jambo Office. Yet such efforts are found to make little impact. To date, they have been amateurish; focusing on the techies who write the code, and failing to introduce a business focus that would draw in needed market research, marketing, distribution and support skills. As so often, too, donor FOSS projects have been short-terms flares of interest rather than the required sustained efforts. They are no match for proprietary firms who are in for the long-haul, and who will use the carrot of low pricing

[ilugd] Recipe for a Successful Linux User Group
The most recent version of this essay can be found at http://linuxmafia.com/faq/Linux_PR/newlug.html. Recipe for a Successful Linux User Group by Rick Moen See the full essay online ** Really good. -FN 1. You need a Web page. 2. Your Web page needs a reasonable URL. 3. You need a regular meeting location. 4. You need a regular meeting time. 5. You need to avoid meeting-time conflicts. 6. You need to make sure that meetings happen as advertised, without fail. 7. You need a core of several Linux enthusiasts. 8. Your core volunteers need out-of-band methods of communication. 9. You need to get on the main lists of LUGs, and keep your entries accurate. * http://www.ssc.com/glue/ * http://lugww.counter.li.org/ * http://nlug.org/webring/ * http://www.redhat.com/apps/community/LUG/ * http://www.linux.org/groups/ * http://dmoz.org/Computers/Software/Operating_Systems/Linux/User_Groups/ * http://dir.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/Software/ Operating_Systems/Unix/Linux/User_Groups/ 10. You must have login access to maintain your Web pages, as needed. 11. Design your Web page to be forgiving of deferred maintenance. 12. Always include the day of the week, when you cite event dates. Always check that day of the week, first, using gcal [2] (or cal). gcal is your friend. 13. Place time-sensitive and key information prominently near the top of your main Web page. 14. Include maps and directions to your events. 15. Emphasise on your main page that your meeting will be free of charge and open to the public (if it is). 16. You'll want to include an RSVP mailto hyperlink, on some events. 17. Use referral pages. 18. Make sure every page has a revision date and maintainer link. 19. Check all links, at intervals. 20. You may want to consider establishing a LUG mailing list. 21. You don't need to be in the Internet Service Provider business. 22. Don't go into any other business, either. 23. Walk the walk. LUG checklist. The following checklist may be useful for your group, once established. 1. Web page: a. Meetings: [ ] Current meeting info? Is it prominent? [ ] Day of the week? Beginning time? Ending time? [ ] Double-checked day/date matches against a calendar? (E.g., is the Friday, March 28 you listed an error, because the 28th is a Thursday?) [ ] Location? [ ] Map? [ ] Directions (car, public transit)? Parking tips? [ ] Information on the next several meetings? [ ] RSVP mailto link on meetings where this is needed? [ ] Note that meetings are free and open to the public (if they are)? [ ] If there's a special fee, is it disclosed next to the event listing? [ ] If location / time / date formula has changed recently, is this noted prominently? [ ] Have you checked for event conflicts with other nearby groups, or with holidays? b. General: [ ] Includes event date-formulas (e.g., 4th Tuesdays)? Prominently? [ ] Maintainer mailto link? [ ] Last-revised date? c. Periodically (maybe every quarter): [ ] Checked all links on your site for dead links? [ ] Checked your Web server's logs for pages requested but not found? (You'll want to put a referral page at that URL.) [ ] Read all your Web content attentively for outdated content? 2. Other, periodical: [ ] Reviewed/updated all LUG lists that have entries concerning your group? [ ] Reviewed all sites that link to yours? Advised their webmasters of needed corrections? Last revised: 2003-08-04 Having seen (and run) quite a few Linux user groups (LUGs), and observed some thrive and others die, I can hazard some firm recommendations. If you're thinking of starting a LUG, or are running one now, please ponder these lessons, drawn from other LUGs' experience. In fact, please consider reviewing this list from time to time, as a kind of checklist. d8b d8b db Frederick Noronha * Freelance Journalist * Goa India 88' 888o 88 f r e d @ b y t e s f o r a l l . o r g 88ooo 88V8o 88 http://www.bytesforall.org * http://fn.swiki.net 88~~~ 88 V8o88 Phone 0091.832.2409490 Mobile 09822 122436 88 88 V888 784 Nr Lourdes Convent, Sonarbhat Saligao Goa 403511 YP VP V8P Writing ... with a difference, on issues that matter ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/

Pune Symbiosis' GNUnify draws big names http://www.linux-india.org/index.pl?id=3496isa=Newsitemop=show Brian Behlendorf of Apache will be taking part in the Pune GNUnify event, organisers announced. So will some other big names, include MySQL founder David Axmark. This year's event will focus on localisation projects, PHP5, Python, MySQL and more. There's an awareness-building exercise for school students and teachers on the first day of the event (Feb 13, 2005) followed by an installfest and more. Organisers announced today (February 7, 2005) that they were to have Apache co-founder Brian Behlendorf taking part in the event. (Apache HTTP Server is an open source HTTP web server for Unix platforms -- BSD, Linux, and UNIX systems -- and Microsoft Windows, and other platforms. Apache features highly configurable error messages, DBMS-based authentication databases, and content negotiation, it is also supported by several GUIs which permit easier, more intuitive configuration of the server. See http://gui.apache.org/ The Apache HTTP Server is developed and maintained by an open community of developers under the auspices of the Apache Software Foundation.) In addition, they are to have Robert Adkins and Ms Alolita Sharma from Technetra, California, Ms Danese Cooper from Sun MicroSystems, MySQL founder David Axmark, and others join their event. (MySQL is a multithreaded, multi-user, SQL (Structured Query Language) relational database server or RDBMS. MySQL is available either under the GNU General Public License or under other licenses when the GPL is inapplicable to the intended use. Unlike projects such as Apache, MySQL is owned and sponsored by a single for-profit firm, the Swedish company MySQL AB.) This year's event will focus on localisation projects, PHP5, Python, MySQL The Commercial FOSS Database, and more. Visit http://gunify.sicsr.ac.in for details or contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] GNUnify is being organised by students of the Masters of Science in Computer Applications -- MSc(CA) degree programme -- of the Symbiosis Institute of Computer Studies and Research. SICSR was set up in 1985, and offers several full-time and part-time courses. Each year, they organise this Free/Open Source Software Event. GNUnify aims at contributing and encouraging the use of FOSS, said a release from the organisers. Initiated in the year 2003, 'GNUnify' is a forum to unite open minds. The event aims at spreading teh philosophy of GNU/Linux -- unifying and strengthening the use of FLOSS, they said. Student-organisers said they were successful over the past two years, and had made this three-day event happen from February 13 to 15 this year. Event schedule for this year is as follows: Feb 13 Linux Eduvantage -- awareness for school students and teachers Feb 14 Install fest, techie talks, workshops and tutorials Feb 15 Seminars, panel discussion. So they need to be able to get GNU/Linux work for them in order to make them productive. Starting on Windows and then transition them with the same set of applications should be an absolute NO.Let them identify people who are inclined to take the activity up in the organizations.Rest all will follow. I am glad that Red Hat is getting some patents to use to defend against Microsoft's patents. (I hope Red Hat never turns around to use them for aggression.) But the only help these patents give us is to block part of the danger of patents -- and only part of it! They have no positive effect. Taken all together, the patents do not play any role in the vitality of our community. Most patents threaten us, and a few may partly defend us from the threat of the rest. We would be much better off if nobody had any software patents. India has wisely refused to allow software patents. Every supporter of free software in India should be helping to support that policy. Would you please help? Please don't invite people to lump together a hypothetical future Indian law (software patents) that can kill our community and an existing Indian law (copyright) that has no such power. -- Richard M Stallman rms at gnu.org --- ### --- FROM BANGALORE, Kartik N kartikn79 at symonds.net sent out a recent reminder about plans for April's BLUG (Bangalore Linux Users' Group) meet, which was held on April 23. From Sam Lanfranco [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- Forwarded message -- Dear ISDF Colleagues, I am working with a group of (mainly) developing country colleagues who are interested in mounting an Open Source Textbook Initiative. They are increasingly concerned about the degree of concentration and prices in the supply basic university textbooks. They envision a scheme whereby individual contributors work on different parts of a subject, with the resulting chapters being posted online as Open Source curricular material both suitable for use as is and available for custom revision to fit the local course context. Material could be used online or downloaded to print, CD, or whatever. I have worked in the past on initiatives to promote open access to Scholarly publications. I have done small things with INASP (International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications) and am well aware of initiative like their African Journals On Line (AJOL) See: http://www.inasp.info/ajol/ . I am also aware of the work on online learning objects. We will be having a late May conference (at York University, Toronto) that includes sessions on learning objects. [ilugd] Linux Bangalore/2003 announced
-- Forwarded message -- Linux Bangalore/2003 announced India's biggest annual Open Source event to take place on December 2/3/4, 2003 Bangalore 19-Nov-2003: Linux Bangalore/2003, India's biggest and most popular Linux and Open Source event, will take palce at Bangalore on December 2/3/4, making it the third year that this event has been organised. What differentiates this event from commercial events (that are typically driven by vendors) is that this event is completely conceived, organised and driven by the Open Source community, focussing on technology talks and a technology expo. Linux Bangalore/2003 continues to work on the basis of its low-cost model - delegates pay only Rs.300 (US$6.50 - Rs.500/US$11 for people who do not register on the website) to have access to all the talks and subevents. The registration fee includes lunch and snacks and a conference T-Shirt. The event itself is funded entirely by sponsorships and sale of expo space. If someone would think that low-cost means low quality - think again! Over the three days, this event will feature almost 100 talks from well known Open Source technologists such as Miguel de Icaza (Mono/Ximian), Rasmus Lerdorf (PHP), Nat Friedman (Ximian), Jeremy Zawodny (MySQL/Yahoo), Bdale Garbee (Debian), Harald Welte (iptables) and others, along with a variety of well known community and industry speakers, including Gopi Garge, Kishore Bhargava, Atul Chitnis, Sirtaj Singh Kang, Naba Kumar, Sudhakar 'Thaths' Chandrasekharan and others. And to end each day, the organizers have planned the screening of a movie, a fusion music concert by the renowned fusion group Laya Taranga, and a rock concert by the well known group Phenom. The event, which consistently has drawn thousands of developers, implementors and enthusiasts from across the world, is sponsored by Linux and Open Source supporters HP, Novell and Exocore, with a number of industry and government bodies endorsing the event as well. Bangalore, already the IT capital of India, is quickly becoming a hothouse for Open Source development, with companies like Ximian/Novell, IBM, HP and others setting up development centres there. About Linux Bangalore/2003: Linux Bangalore/2003 is India's premier Linux/OpenSource event. This annual event brings together professionals and enthusiasts from India, Asia and the rest of the world for a three day Applied Technology Conference. A LIVE-CD IN THE BANGLA LANGUAGE: Sayamindu Dasgupta [EMAIL PROTECTED], the young achiever of the Free Software network from Kolkata in eastern India, recently announced the Ankur Bangla LiveCD version 1.0-beta2 (codenamed DaanpiTe Chhele). He wrote: Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, The Ankur Bangla Project is proud announce version 1.0-beta2 (DaanpiTe Chhele) of its Morphix based LiveCD (or if you prefer it in that way -- demo CD). What is it? The Ankur Bangla LiveCD is a 'khichuri' created out of some of the finest GNU/Linux distributions out there. The bootup, hardware detection and shutdown is done by a combination of Debian GNU/Linux, Knoppix and Morphix. The non GUI system is based on Slackware Linux 9.0 while the GUI runs a version of GNOME 2.4, specifically patched and compiled for the Ankur Bangla group to show off its works. (Yep right! - patched means that there is extra functionality and eyecandy) Requirements? The Ankur LiveCD requires 16 MB of RAM and a i486 compatible CPU to run in command line mode. However, to see anything in Bangla, you will have to run the CD in GUI mode, which requires a minimum of 128 MB RAM and a 400 Mhz or better processor to run. You can use it with lesser RAM and lots of swap space, but there's no guarantee this would work! What does it do? With this LiveCD, we aim to provide everything that a stock Windows(TM) install provides. This means, you get a fully functional desktop, a plain-text editor (with beta level support for Bengali spellchecking), a web browser (to render UTF-8 encoded Bangla web-pages perfectly), an instant messaging client, a standalone FTP client, a VCD/DVD/videofile/audiofile/audio CD player, a CD burning software with basic functionality, an image viewer, numerous games, a PDF and PS file viewer, a terminal emulator, a program similar to Microsoft(TM) Netmeeting (TM), a sound recorder, a webcam management utility (being tested), a fancy calculator

[ilugd] NEWS[OFFTOPIC]: U.S. IT firm charged with using unauthorised software
U.S. IT firm charged with using unauthorised software From Indo-Asian News Service New Delhi, Sep 8 (IANS) Astell Infotech Limited, the Indian arm of a New Jersey-based IT services firm, has been charged with using unauthorised software, Delhi Police said Monday. The economic offences wing of the Delhi Police conducted a raid at the office of Astell Infotech on September 3 after another software firm, Macromedia Inc., complained of unauthorised usage of its software. We raided Astell's office located in Greater Kailash here. The company had been using 40 computers that were checked by the authorised representative of Macromedia, said a senior Delhi Police official. It was found that the hard discs of 15 computers were loaded with software of Macromedia. Astell had no authorisation for using the software, the official told IANS, adding the estimated value of the recovered software was Rs.500,000. The official said a case under copyright laws has been registered against Astell Infotech. The investigation is in progress. While top official of the country are not in India, we are trying to gather information from local employees. Astell Infotech officials refused to comment on the issue. The company has offices in New Jersey and New Delhi and provides services to large multinational clients in the U.S. No company should place their hard fought business reputation at risk by using unlicensed software, said Shriram Krishnamachari, country manager (India) of Macromedia Inc. Companies, which use illegal software for their own benefit, are robbing the software developers of their valuable intellectual property and placing the future viability of software industry at risk. Macromedia has operations in more than 50 countries worldwide, and headquarters in San Francisco. The company is a strategic IT supplier to customers in the business, government and education markets globally. India reduced it piracy rate by nine points between 1996 and 2002, creating new businesses, jobs and opportunities. Cutting the country's piracy rate by another 10 points, to 60 percent, by 2006, could create nearly 50,000 high-tech jobs, say industry observers. --Indo-Asian News Service ___ ilugd mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd

FREEBSD OPTIONS: FreeBSD enthusiast and developer from Bangalore Joseph Koshy [EMAIL PROTECTED] says, in response to a query from one youngster: We don't have a central body that directs FreeBSD. It is more like a collection of peers, the only criteria for admission is (proven) competence on FreeBSD. There are a number of mailing lists that carry FreeBSD related technical traffic. Do check www.freebsd.org for more information. For example, press, publicity and the like are discussed on freebsd-advocacy. There is no 'certification' on FreeBSD that I'm aware of. [ilugd] [LIG] Links from the Gulf... an interesting story (long)
Looks like Microsoft is doing its bit to promote Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) in the more affluent parts of the globe, like the Gulf. Some background of an interesting case. Interesting, many of the key players in the Gulf FLOSS movement seem to be expat Indians, at least going by the active posters on this list. I expected other members would write about BSA 's faxes to companies.BSA is a watchdog for Microsoft and dozen other Propreitary companies. It is not a government organisation. But they think they are government and misrepresent to the companies like that. BSA was founded primarily by Microsoft and they operate from Microsoft office in Dubai. You need not give any information to BSA about the software in your company. They have no authorisation. But they can inform people about legalising the proprietary software and educating about anti-piracy on behalf of their sponsors. Anyway I have taken the arrogant faxes sent by BSA to companies in the UAE very seriously and warned BSA not to send any annoying faxes to Companies asking for Private software details in the guise of Software Audit and passing the information to BSA members. I am forwarding the copies of my letters to BSA and other information to the LUG members. We as Linux Users, who advocate and use Open Source should fight this type of dubious data collection by BSA who threaten companies indirectly to use their proprietary software. regards, Prabhakar --- In [EMAIL PROTECTED], Montuewed T.F.S [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello, Many companies received faxes from BSA asking the companies to furnish details about the software they have in their company ? They have given deadline to submit information about the software with the copies of licences and invoices to be sent to them. Do we have to give information on the software we have in our companies ? Where BSA office is located ? How to answer to BSA faxes? Cannot we use a computer without any Microsoft software ?
