Hey,

Its not at all a problem if u loose a password. U cant retrieve it ..thats
for sure because its encrypted by a Trap-Door Algorithm which is one-way
encryption. but u can always change it.
Wat u can do is ..in ur grub menu while booting .before u boot into linux
press 'e'. to edit the menu. In the boot sequence first line u append
init=/bin/sh
then u boot.! after u r in , u get a prompt like sh#
there u write
# mount -o remount -n /
u then give the passwd command..like
# passwd
simply change ur password by giving new one.

Another trick is ..!
when u get sh# prompt ..simply in next prompt do # vim /etc/passwd
n from the first line ...erase the 'x' beside root.! ur root is passwrodless
now..!

[ilugd] LINUX INSTALLATION PROBLEM

2007-07-18 Thread MALKIAT BENIPAL
Hello Guys,

I have distro of Mandrake 10.1 supplied with my system. Earlier I had installed
it with Windows XP. Due to some problem with the hard disk, I replaced it with
new one. Now after partitioning my HDD as C,D E and installing Win XP on C,
when I am trying to install the said Linux, I am getting the following error
message generated by Kernel upon pressing ALT+F4 key while installing this OS :

end_error : System I/O error { DriveRead SeekComplete Error}
Buffer Read : I/O error ..

After this, while the installation bar line is in progress (after 3 or 4
minuts) of starting the installation process, I get the message something like
Setup failed to Initialise and upon pressing the Enter key the system
starts rebooting.

I tried to install the same on my office PC but the same error is generated
here. CDs are Intact and clean and there are no scratches on it.

Kindly guide to solve this problem. I shall be obliged to you all.

Thanks Regards,
MALKIAT

[ilugd] modprobe bttv problem - Mandrake 10.1

2005-07-05 Thread MALKIAT BENIPAL
Dear guys,

Just from Mandrake 9, I switched over to Mandrake 10.1. I installed it afresh.
In Ver.9 my tv tuner card (brooktree878) was working fine. But in Mandrake's
10.1 though modules.conf is compiled without any error and the sequence of
commands are same which I was using in the file modules.conf of Mandrake 9.

alias char-major-89 i2c-dev

options i2c-core i2c_debug=1

options i2c-algo-bit bit_test=1

alias char-major-81 videodev

alias char-major-81-0 bttv

options bttv card=23 tuner=5 audiomux=0 automute=1

After issuing command modprobe bttv and running xawtv, neither any channel is
displayed nor any sound out comes. But from root when I issue the command as
follows then everything is fine :

rmmod bttv
modprobe bttv card=23

please guide where the problem can be.

Thanks in advance

There is some very basic work thats required. Some of them include.

- Some Printer troubleshooting.
- Installation of mplayer.

Its ok if you want to do a reinstall / replace Debian with kubantu or

If you think you can do it. Please email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] with [TU] in

 What you need to do:

 - - Figure out who you believe is the right person for each post.
Choose people whose integrity you trust, and who you believe can help
the LUG proceed in the direction in which YOU want the LUG to go.
This is important -- from now on the future of the LUG is in your
 hands!

 - - Nominate (or second) the right person for each post.

I also want to add the following:
Leave your individual reservations about certain people in the LUG
aside. This is not just about voting for the nicest or the brainiest
person. Vote for the persons who have demonstrated in the past, that
regardless of their individual engagements, they have always been able
to take out time for holding meetings, gathering people, planning and
organizing meets, etc. i.e. people who can actually work for the
society, at least over the term of the office.

For the LUG to survive in the long run (and if you look around, you
would find that ILUGD is still going strong after all these years as
compared to LUGs from other prominent cities and towns), it needs people
like these to work for it.

- Sandip

P.S. No, I am not trying to nominate myself or anybody with these words.
Because, for one, I have been quite irregular in meets and events, and I
find myself quite unsuitable for any of these jobs anyway. In other
words, I have voted myself out already. ;)

Re: [ilugd] tv tuner card problem - Mandrake 9.0

2003-12-17 Thread MALKIAT BENIPAL

Hello Sahil,

1.try to find if the card is detected properly from the
/etc/sysconfig/hwconf

Let me know what is procedure of detection in this directory

---
and check if a grabber is available
(lspci also can be helpful)

ok

2.bttv mod is inserted or not -

Also please guide for this in detail

-
3.also have u cross checked if ur card is supported or not...afaik Bt878
works

I am sure bt878 chipset is 100% supported in Mandrake/Redhat. Only let me know what
could be the card and tuner type for Intex tv tuner card with bt878 chipset. Which tv
tuner card (brand) u r using. If yours working fine with all keys of your keyboard,
pl. send me a copy of your /etc/modules.conf file. ok .

thanks

i worked on redhat 8 not mandrake..dnt know the path of hwconf...u need
to figure out tht

I think there is not much diff in mandrake or redhat only configuration tools are
little bit of difference.

2003-09-22 Thread MALKIAT BENIPAL
The idea of maintaining FAQ is good indeed and should be implemented immediately, if
not. The relevant link should be brought to the notice of all the ILUGD members
enabling them in trouble shotting their day to day linux problems. Needless to say, it
will lessen the burdent of repetititon of unnecessary mails to a great extent.

rama seshagiri [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Dear friends,
Our friend, Mr. Shuvam Misra's suggestion reg. FAQ may
be seriously looked into. Linux is such an ocean that
most of us are not very familiar with so many packages
and utilities, except the ones that are most common.
We somehow manage to install new things after quite a
bit of struggle. More over in our filed yesterdays
things are obsolete today and tomorrow they are
history. So concentrating on so many things is not
possible for anybody. This happens in every field
because of focus areas always take much of our time.
Hence it is better to have some FAQ's on difft.
categories of packages or utilities, so that one need
not reinvent the wheel. ( for ex. Mr. Shuvam says that
they have done some changes to C code to implement the
package).
kindly give some serious thought.

 Malkiat: check ClamAV.

I've been on this list just a few months, and this
 question has already
come up at least four times. Can we create a FAQ for
 ILUGD? And once we
create it, can we members, as a matter of policy,
 point others to the
FAQ if there's any query which is answered by it?

A secondary advantage of this FAQ will be that it
 can also carry
pointers, help, etc, which are not available in the
 standard
documentation. I'll post another message in a bit,
 where I'll give you
some idea of the problems we've faced with ClamAV
 and actual C code
changes we've had to do. This knowledge currently
 stays within Starcom,
and it would be useful if ILUGD or other lists could
 acquire this
information in their resource archives. Also, not
 all Linux users are
competent to study and change C code, so this will
 be value addition to
the less technical members of this list who are
 sysadms.

 Just my 10 paise.

i have several user accounts under RH8.
after a user logs in, it is important to launch firestarter.
doing so requires the root password.
so i figured i must set this up automatically to boot under each account.

therefore, i did the following things:
1) typed $which firestarter
and to this one, did a chmod u+s, as well as a g+s, to set sticky bits.

for good measure, did the chmod U+s and g+s to the firestarter in /usr/bin,
to the one in /usr/sbin, to also the /usr/bin/consolehelper that i found
/usr/bin/firestarter was pointing to.

finally, did a ls -l check on all these to confirm the sticky bit.

tried launching firestarter. the prompt for the root password did not come,
but firestarter did not launch either.

?

earlier, had also made an entry in /etc/rc.local for the command to
automatically launch firestarter at boot time. is the above problem the
reason it did not launch, either?

Re: [ilugd] linux CD bootable How to ?

2003-08-26 Thread MALKIAT BENIPAL

Ok Mr.Raj, I agree that I may use knoppix as the rescue disk, but to compile the
lilo.conf file we need super user mode. Pl. guide how a super user mode is activated
using a knoppix disk.

regards,

malkiat

people just use knoppix as the rescue disk. all the tools you'll need are
already on it. even the first cd of a distro's installation is safely used
these days as a rescue cd, by booting it into 'rescue' mode.

[ilugd] connecting to two servers thr single IP Address

2003-08-14 Thread MALKIAT BENIPAL
Dear all,

I have two servers with me. One is running Unix SCO 5.5 server and another one is a

server to differnt PCs for net surfing and mail distribution purpose. The IP address
of SCO server is 100.0.0.1 and the IP address of PC server is 191.172.100.2.

Now, I have a client PC and I am connected to both these servers thr lan card. By
default I am connected to PC server for net surfing purpose. Now, if I wish to connect

change the address of my IP as 100.0.0.12 and reboot my PC. Now, I am able to connect
to my SCO server. Again, if I wish to connect that PC server I have to change my IP
address to that of PC one ie. 191.172.100.12.

Is there any other way through which I am relieved of the task of changing the IP
addresses of my client PC and restarting it again and again for switching over between

Malkiat I just need a solution for my problem and not advise.

So you're saying that...

1. You prefer to use proprietary software, even if it doesn't work
for you.

2. You pay large amounts of money to proprietary software vendors and
then you approach a list that deals in free software for help instead
of contacting the proprietary software vendors you bought your
software from and asking them to solve your problems.

3. Your criterion for using software is how much you paid for it
rather than the usefulness of the software for you.

4. It's fine if you approach a Linux list for help even though you're
asking for help with the software from the 2 companies that have the
most interest in seeing Linux destroyed (SCO and MS).

Here's the help you wanted: to answer your (rhetorical) question, you
can switch over to Linux after paying Rs 3.5 lakhs very easily: come
and take Debian CDs from me, put CD 1 in the drive of the SCO system,
boot with it and answer the questions it prompts you with. See? it's
that easy!
