Re: [ilugd] Re:MIlitary Grade Software
I have been reading on some of the posts on Military Grade software, and also the other thread on the question whether Linux is Military grade. Almost every one has brought out some definition of the term military grade. I find them all to be true only partially. I won't go into details of what constitutes military specifications and how they are framed. I will also not discuss whether the Indian Military has got any such specifications regarding software. But let me tell you that the term military grade is normally used in the commercial/corporate world and not in the Military as such. And it connotes - ruggedness, robustness, conformance to strict standards etc. Some other misgivings - DRDO does not lay out military specifications. It is the research wing of Defence. It is not the user. Certain sections of the Indian Military are Linux-aware. Some efforts are being made to make use of Linux in server-end. Where security is the concern, Trusted Solaris is prefered to Linux. Cost is not the primary criteria, but solidity and service availability are. But things are bound to change, with the 2.6 kernel and more and more mainline software being available with stable versions. I believe the ILUG community can act as a catalyst by arranging demos/seminars/symposiums targetted at decision-makers in the Govt./Defence. -- narsingh Yahoo! Again was quite surprised to note that in my work situation there is very little network traffic using LTSP as files are served by the same server and only end display travels on network. Yes, astonishingly there is not much requirement of network bandwidth. And, yes, you are right, cards like S3Virge, Trio64, or Cirrus Logic with 1/2 MB VRAM and a basic multisync monitor should suffice. However all said I am still not convinced that 486 with low mem is good idea for running a X (IceWM etc.) desk as the lag time in updating of display tells. The client end is not doing much processing. X is like a client-server in reverse. Your requirement of memory etc. is for the server, which is dependant on the number of users, type of apps to run, desktop environment/window managers etc. I have run one 386 machine also but just for curiosity. When you are thinking of thin client or LTSP kind of network solution, I would not go for Gnome/KDE at the client end. Both are heavy and you don't want to run all the kind of software which come with these two desktop environment, do you? Yes you need a good graphics card capable of 24bit resolution and may be 3D graphics, because you may be intending the clients to access graphics related software. The main idea is to utilise older PCs( 486, P-I) to work efficiently. You serve software like OpenOffice from a central server. My advice is that you stick to a less heavy Window manager like IceWM, Window Maker, or XFCE4(it is much improved). OpenOffice 1.1 is much faster than the earlier versions. In a LTSP environment, the subsequent loading of OpenOffice at the client end, after some user has already done it, will be really fast( one second or thereabout). And yes, such a solution is thoroughly workable. In fact, I was trying to convince my people its efficacy ( I am in Government), but somehow, saving money by utilizing obsolescent hardware has not been a priority in Govt. offices. -- narsingh Yahoo! Re: [ilugd] LRP dead?
--- Shuvam Misra [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Sheesh! I must have missed the news earlier. But I just found out that the LRP(Linux Router project) is dead. [...] Stale News. Was discussed at LIG in June with same thread name. The author didn't release the source code therefore its dead was the moral of the story. Am a bit confused here. What source code was this? If the LRP was based on the Linux kernel, didn't it come under GPL, thus making source redistribution mandatory? What has the discontinuation of LRP project got to do with GPL. You can still download the source code. Only thing is that the author has not been able to maintain the site and the project due to financial problems. Initially he got some funding, but of late they dried up. -- narsingh Yahoo! India Promos: Win TVs, Bikes, DVD players more! Sorry Rishi, You were right. I changed the permissions for kppp and it worked. But what stil foxes me is how a power outage can result in change of permission of a file in operation. Re: [ilugd] Problem opening modem by kppp
No LL, You are widely off the mark. I sent the message from my office Linux box. Incidentally I have got Knoppix installed onto my harddisk both at home and office. I came to like Debian after using all sorts of Distro (RH, Mandrake, SuSE - you name it). And since I could not lay my hands on a Debian set of CDs, Knoppix came in handy. Also I had checked for the running processes. The problem, as I have mentioned in an earlier post, was because somehow the permissions for the kppp got changed. -- narsingh --- LinuxLingam [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On Monday 18 August 2003 04:05 pm, you wrote: Hello everybody, Last night while I was browsing the Net, my PC rebooted due to a power problem. Thereafter, kppp failed to connect to the Net saying unable to open modem or something similar. There is no lock file. The modem works alright in Windows. What am I missing? Thanks, -- narsingh you still have the kppp daemon running as a process. press control+esc to get the list of running processes, and kill kppp and other daemons that are busy accessing the modem for nothing. then, start fresh with kppp and you'll be able to log in. :-) LL ps: i assume you sent this message from win doze, or perhaps a colleague's gnulinux box. but suppose in a happy future (severe future at last with zero piracy?) you have no win doze on your pc, you can just pop in a cd of knoppix and start. i find it a good idea to have multiple boots of other linux distros on your hard disk. ___ ilugd mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Yahoo! Re: [ilugd] (no subject)
Since you yourself are pretty unsure about Unix/Linux and what you want to do with it( you mentioned certificates), I would suggest you pick up a Linux book from any book store ( a casual browsing should tell you whether the book suits your requirement). Such books normally come with some Linux distributions on CD(s) and will be available under Rs. 500/-. -- narsingh --- tarun sundriyal [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: sir i want to switch towards linux and i am not able to understand weather i must learn unix or linux so can you help me also can u give information about various certificates that i can get from net based on unix or linux.waiting for u r guidance thanks Send free SMS using the Yahoo! RHL 7.2 is very old and I have a lot of important data on it, so, I cannot afford to test it out. Upgrade is a term you use for shifting to a newer release of the same distribution. In your case you could be upgrading to RedHat 8.0,9.0 etc. In case you are switching to another distribution like Mandrake or Elx, you are better advised to backup your data and config files, if any. -- narsingh Missed your favourite TV serial last night?
