Very disturbing to see some great souls Raj and Atul going after one
another. I still remember Atul and Raj encounter couple of times in ILUGD.
Hope they have some great discussions now.

You'll be remembered Atul.

 Hi,

Anyone know a package that will let me stream WebM (or, failing that,
Flash) video to a browser with remote functionality (Pause, Forward,
 Rewind, Play, etc)?

 Pure FOSS solutions only, please.

Not a pure FOSS solution. But, yes you can see/edit code as desired and pay
a fee if used commercially.

I have tested many solutions couple of years back and this was the most
stable solution.

[ilugd] Reports from SVN log

2012-02-22 Thread Gaurav Mishra
Guys,

Need help in creating some daily reports of a self hosted svn server. I
looked into svnstat but was disappointed, what is the best paid/non-paid
solution available.

I am currently managing a single repository with 6 dev people hitting it
daily, need a report on how many lines of code went in and possibly i can
see a diff report of each developer daily.

Pointers ?

Yes and no.

Would svn blame work ? It would show all the commits with the

No i don't think so.

Let me rephrase my problem.

I have 6 devs working across projects that is running from a
single repository. I need to track which dev wrote how many line of codes
daily. And possibly want to see firsthand what they wrote.

I dont think that's possible with svnblame. Correct me if I am wrong.

How about doing an svn blame DAILY and saving this file, and seeing it's
daily diff.

Do pardon my amateurish attempt, even I thought about this once but did
not bring this to completion.

 Best,
 Ashim

 Guys,

Recovering this thread. This should be about belling the cat, not killing
 kittens.

 Some ideas to take forward

 A. What?

 (1) I think we should plan for an ILUGD GBM (ILUGD - the society). It has
been a few years since we had our normal 5-member GBM's and probably a good
time to see if we can shake up the governing body, with - well - some new
 bodies.

+1 , for this. Also, before going into it we need to make sure that
there are enough people who know about GBM and are willing to contest
for elections.

 (2) Incubating expertise-based-hubs for sub-communities, based on
disciplines/platforms/solutions... [There has been some sporadic discussion
among a group of us - with the ultimate aim of planning towards Freed.in
(201x - where x=1,2). This was one of the points which would concern ILUGD -
the community, and is a change in strategy to shift a general purpose ILUGD
community with now very diverse interests  to LUG-D-interested-I's into
forming specialised self-organised-groups which will serve as hubs within
 the wider community.

We knew that Pratul and kinshuk are working on the same, can anyone of
two please come forward and present a session which talks more about
current expertise-based communities we have in NCR. Three most
prominent ones i see is of Open source gaming, Drupal and Security
related. Are there any more which we are missing ?

 (3) New Distros - The govt is now rolling out the National Knowledge
Network, and there is better bandwidth at educational institutions - as you
have probably noticed if you have downloaded from IIT-K and IIT-M over the
last few months. Anyone up to planning a community managed mirror to be
hosted at JNU for (at least) the Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora and CentOS trees?
Diskspace and server will be provided from Localhost.

This would be a great project for any college group, simple but yet
substantial to look into resume.

 B. When and Where?
[Probably best to NOT reply to these points on the list, as too many
one-liners on an unguided listing of Delhi's hell-holes/coffee shops is not
really in anyone's interest. Will leave this to the dependable Gora to kill
this kitten with one tome, hopefully at a later stage in the thread]

JNU , 17th April would be great. If almighty localhost agrees :)

Of course, even if you are working for Free and Open source projects,
there has to be some income.

Businesses don't buy softwares, they buy solutions. Which inevitably solve
there one or other problem.

If you are looking forward to ideate onto a product , get into product
development , create marketing/sales system , create a delivery channel
, fix bugs/releases and create a efficient support system for your
consumers. Great , go ahead do it. But have atleast a million dollars and
couple of years with you before making a sustainable business venture.

There are tons of proprietary softwares coming out daily and they will
continue to be out in the market. FOSS model works perfectly when you want
to crowdsource all the effort including development, bug fixing
, delivery channel and marketing. All this while still you own the
software.

Imagine the amount of marketing spend you have to do if you need to make
apache , firefox a brand which it is currently. It's a very smart way to
create a sustainable brand , rest of money will follow from various other
ways.

Look at Wordpress (Matt), Canonical (Mark) and read through
there entrepreneurial journey, these guys get the FOSS culture and mass
needs perfectly and cashing it out for there own good. It's a very smart way
of doing business, only when you get it perfectly.

And in the end there is always the freelancing model of work through which
hundreds of indian freelancers and IT professionals are making crores each
year. A perfect need of market where a client A needs some solution and
freelancer B takes some open source software customize it with the client
need and meet the solution of client. A is always charged of the full
software value and the open source software benefits from
the customization and module development B has done. A win win situation for
everyone. :)

My two cents.

Hi,
Hope you will spare a couple of minutes for this disabled exsoldier.

I am 31 yrs old ex soldier (Indian Air Force) injured on duty and left on
wheelchair for life.

I believe that a good skill can be a weapon to achieve something in life, so
I felt I should too develop some skills to get going and accelerate in my
career path, I learnt some level of web skills like HTML, Javascript, PHP,
Mysql, Ajax Technique and some beginner level to Joomla 1.5.

I have a strong desire to excel in web development and to become
professional in this field. And due to lack of strong foundation am just
confused on the fundamentals of flow and development.

I learnt most from W3schools, Zend PHP 101, other tutorials and books did
some sample pages both static and dynamic. Apart from these I have good
knowledge in System Administration, MS Office and Photoshop.

At present am living in Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre - Defence
Establishment, Range Hills, PUNE.

I somehow managed to get as Trainee Customer Exec in a local firm here which
is compensating my stay here.

Kindly suggest me if i can get a On Job Trainee (PHP web development) or any
good and institution which can promisingly help me in establishing my PHP
career.

Also plz do help in ZCE preparation or refer an institution where i can get
proper training.

Plz do support me with your kind suggestions.

We were 8 people in total and at the end whole session took a BOF form
, we started with a session from Dhiraj Gaur on Open source maturity
model. And it threw up some very discussion and insights on support
model offered by different vendors on open source softwares. It was
total fun and informative both at the same time to see the business
and social opportunities in support. Dhiraj promised to repost this
OSMM presentation on ILUGD mailing list for more reviews and insights.

We finished off the meet with a brief discussion on freed.in and some
projects for students from engineering college. After which the
flagship eating ceremony happened at our JNU canteen. It was a a fun
meetup with some light weight discussions thrown by.

Look forward to meet everyone in next meetup.

Cheers..

 Very well said.
I will use that for any further fresher job request.

Few piece of advice which may help in getting experience and exposure when a
fresher is looking for a job.

-- Lookout for the avenues where people need some free help on servers,
tech suggestions etc. That will give you some real good references and real
exposure to real problems. (You should not have any problem in finding
freeloaders).

-- Talk about your skills among peer groups, colleges , etc. That always
helps people to prepare for a big interview and get some good references.

-- Go out for a interview , even if it's for experienced ones. I am dead
sure you will learn some tips and tricks on the way.

-- In the end, never worry on and after a interview. Remember , work just
make you more old :D.

Ciao..

Re: [ilugd] Data accessed via API

2010-09-13 Thread Gaurav Mishra
On Tue, Sep 14, 2010 at 1:23 AM, Ankit Chaturvedi
ankit.chaturv...@gmail.com wrote:

On Mon, Sep 13, 2010 at 7:07 PM, Gaurav Mishra gauravtec...@gmail.comwrote:

 Guys,

Lately, got this case while working on a internal project.

Let's say we have a X software which provides a API so that third party
 apps
can integrate with the existing core system and extend functionality , now
we are not changing any code here but using the underlying data via API.
 In
that case should i need to open source my modules/third party app ? (I
believe SugarCRM works that way only, however wordpress recently forced
users to make there plugins open source which is contradictory).

The straight answer is it depends on the license of the API. Generally
you'll find three popular licenses, so here's a simple explanation for these
 cases.

LGPL: Only propagates if original source code is modified. Any derivative
work is considered independent, so in your case no need to release the code.
If you do modify/add the APIs then you only have to release the modified
source, not your application's source. That is, no version of the library
can be non-free, though programs using this library can be free.

GPLv1: Technically, GPL propagates upon linking to a GPL library. So if
your 3rd party software is gplv1, you will need to release your source too.
There are many caveats to this, mainly concerning the definition of linking
as GPL was mostly written with C in mind. Its status on partially compiled
languages (such as java) or interpreted languages is unclear at best. Due to
this confusion, authors usually add another 'artistic' license to their
libraries which do make such a distinction and hence may contain additional
 clauses to the license.

 GPLv2: Terms state this:

 GNU GPL V2: 2.
These requirements apply to the modified work as a whole. If
identifiable sections of that work are not derived from the Program,
and can be reasonably considered independent and separate works in
themselves, then this License, and its terms, do not apply to those
sections when you distribute them as separate works. But when you
distribute the same sections as part of a whole which is a work based
on the Program, the distribution of the whole must be on the terms of
this License, whose permissions for other licensees extend to the
entire whole, and thus to each and every part regardless of who wrote it.

So in this case again the boundaries aren't very clear but it does imply
that plugins/scripts etc will fall under gplv2. So in your case, if the api
is gplv2 and if your app cannot function without the said api (obviously) it
is deemed to be v2 and your source needs to be released. Again, many many
caveats though I'm not going to list them all.

So in short, read the file called LICENSE and diff with the GPL text to
find out additions. Or ask the library author. Its important to note that
APIs themselves cannot be licensed under any circumstances.

Wordpress is GPLv2, so plugins written using wordpress api are
automatically derived works and deemed GPL. Its only fair that plugin
writers not make their money off wordpress author's work when they

 Hope this helps.

given that CWG is from 3rd, i wouldn't recommend an event in the week

how is november, once cwg and diwali is over, which is 5 november.
so does that push the date to mid-november?

if that's too late, consider early sep, like 1 sep or something.

:-) Gaurav shouting of them would not give any solution,Cool g go change the
media and try it hope it would work !!!

The guy paid RHEL guys for linux support and if he is shipped a broken
disc, I think shouting to them is a appropriate behavior :)

On the other hand, Yeah just the change of media will do the trick :)

Really sad that not enough people turned up.

Loved Karanbir's talk and his insights over Twitter functionalities ,
These are some information that can't be documented anywhere, you need

The umbrella idea don't seems to work as of now!, For the simple reason that
the specialized groups are right now bigger than the general focus groups !
For the record Delhi is having a very vibrant Ruby users group, Drupal users
group , Wordpress users group , Bloggers group and they are pretty good in
meeting and collaborating!

However , I see good possibility of ILUGD collaborating with different

Every idea seems great and there are a lot of possibilities , the main thing

Well that seems like a excellent idea ! Let's do it .However , if you
need this meetings to be successful , these *3-10* can't be same
people that are there always for years !, The meetings currently see
same people with different hairstyles every time !, We need different
people for different BOF's , Everybody can't be present every week !

Agreed. I say we throw around a whole bunch of ideas on BOF meeting
topics, gauge interest and hold several of them every month. A few
topics (off the top of my head) that I am personally interested in
right now. Hold a BOF and I'll be there (schedule permitting) -

 1. FOSS document sharing and publishing. Especially an alternative to PDF.
 2. Any web dev topics PHP/RoR/Python, AJAX, anything.
 3. FOSS platforms suitable for embedded systems. OpenMoko, Android.
 Embedded Forth/Erlang/Scheme/Python.
 4. FOSS Functional programming. Haskell, Erlang, Scheme.
 5. Foss alternatives for shared Calendars, shared code development,
shared todo lists, milestone and task management.
 6. What's up in Ubuntu/Debian. Ubuntu 9.04.
 7. Gnome roadmap. Gnome translations into local languages. Getting a
better user experience in Gnome (install Thunar, AWN, and global menu
 bar!)
 8. What's up with Firefox? What's up with Chrome? What's up with
 Epiphany and Dillo?
 9. New advances in Javascript engines. V8. Tracemonkey.
 10. FOSS based massive information management. Search engines.

Great list !, Anupam as you are continously in and out of delhi ,
Would request you to choose one day when you are present in delhi and
formally (in a informal manner) announce this BOF meeting on that
day!, Let's do it and guage the number of participants , Let us know

PS: I know most of people do not follow email niceties (mostly they

email conversations it becomes a whole lot easier to carry on
meaningful dialogue and you can snip out what is not meaningful too.
Most people just hit reply button and top post leaving prior message
appended uselessly at bottom. See if you can adopt this style and
persuade others. In case you are already doing this . great,
 spread the message.

have you actually made contact with that person ? have you given that person
reasonable amount of time to respond  ?

What's the reasonable amount of time ?, 2 months is a good one IMO

did you use the 'accepted' mechanism
of communication for that project ? remember most people do *not* want
person email about project -devel stuff if there is a -devel related mailing
list. While most people will be ok with it - quite a few are not, and thats
a very fair situation to be in.

The project doesn't have a devel mailing list or a sorceforge/github
kinda account and even a published svn. No collabration at all.

There is also a good chance that the person has moved on in life and isnt
really maintaining that project anymore - in which case they might be very
happy to move the code and the project to you and let you carry on managing
it. There are quite a few projects out there that have this sort of a
'moving from person to person' situation, eg the mutt folder view patchset
 project, and even tinyproxy.

Well the last release is 6 months old (Which is fine), He is still
replying to forums where i have posted the question of helping in
development of project. Hope he responds.

My question is more on what are the stuff that a person should take
care while forking a project !, The way i want to take this project
may be completely different from what he is planning (and this is fine
, because this is my need) , What should a person do so that he/she
can get proper valuation for the previous work he/she has done.?

Any clarification would be appreciated !

[ilugd] Forking a GPlv2 project

Greetings all,

Recently i found a dead project that met my needs in a exact way !, After
using it for few weeks and making a lot of changes and bug fixes , I
requested the mod to incorporate, communicate or atleast say hi to me , so
that i can know how he is planning to take on the project.

But it looked like he was very busy to get bothered.

Now i have decided to forked the project and give it a new name, place and
a svn repositry.!, What are the things that i should take care of ?, This
code is going to be in the same licence as of it's older variant GPLv2.

Any help and pointers would be appreciated !

Re: [ilugd] ILUGD (society) as a funding umbrella for FOSS development

2009-03-16 Thread Gaurav Mishra
On Sat, Mar 14, 2009 at 8:23 PM, Andrew Lynn lynn.and...@gmail.com wrote:
This is to seed discussion on a proposal to add a function to the ILUGD
society: That of a funding umbrella for community FOSS based development

 Background: (Personal opinion)
 (1) The FOSS community is made up of a relatively large number of FOSS users
and a smaller number of FOSS developers. Most are active users and
evangelists in the late teens-early twenties, before largely moving into
jobs where they are lost to the  creative use of FOSS in building their
careers. A lucky few join FOSS-supportive organisations (e.g Yahoo, Google)
which encourage their use of FOSS and pay them sufficiently to build a
career. The remaining enthusiasts work largely as hermits in self-run
smaller organisations or as individuals. Their opportunities for creative
use of their FOSS skills are limited due to lack of  financial support  in
India. Many service the SME/NGO vertical, based on personal contacts. The
services are largely system administration and content management. As
individuals, they lack the organisational structure to bid for larger
projects. Community based development projects lack the accountability
 required to deliver results.

Quite true, Accept every fact stated above.

 (2) The LUG as a space for a physical face-to-face meeting  has long been
redundant with increased use of collaboratories based on internet
technologies. LUG meetings now have sparse attendance. The LUG needs to
 redefine its role.

LUG comprises of people and we are seeing a huge shift in younger
generation in methods of colabration over internet, The web is no
longer forums , lists or irc.

Leveraging Social media tools with LUG discussions may be a nice idea IMO

Post Freed.in/2009, we have discussed a few models in which an organisation
could serve as an umbrella to funnel projects to community development.
 (1) Serve as a message board and match-making role
The list presently allows commercial offerings to be made. (This could be
more formal such as e.g. [1]) While the list works sufficiently well for
outsourcing minor components of projects by organisations that control the
project's  funding,  this does not work for government funded projects which
 do not permit solicitation.

Hmm, If i am not wrong ILUGD as a society can't be/shouldn't be
involved in commercial transactions and understandings. Correct me if
i am wrong !

 (2) A  FOSS based organisation that has developed a corporate structure and
business model to employ community participants in relevant  projects would
be ideal. I am not aware of any such organisation, and if these exist they
are not relevant in govt. bids. Most organisations also work with a closed
group of employees, and do not allow space for skill and project-based
 employment.

Credibility is a huge issues, In crowdsourced model it's very
difficult for people to be acccountable.

I propose that ILUGD takes on this role. There have to be some changes in
its structure for this to happen: A shift from a volunteer based management
to a secretariat which would be required for responding to RFPs and project
management, as well as  some system of managing accountability.
Employees are not permanent but work on a project based on skills, and we
could tap skills through moonlighting as well.

The modular way Sarai fellowships are working can be a nice example in
this case , IMO

I would like to suggest an OSDD model for community participation: We have 4
roles - loosely based on the credit card systems. Everyone joins as a blue
card. You can work on a project with a supervisor. Based on commit rights
and contributions, you are promoted to a silver card, which allows you to
supervise projects for which infrastructure is available. Further promotion
 - again merit based - moves you to a gold card, which allows you to bid for
funding to execute projects. The platinum cards are responsible for getting
 in the major funding.

Sounds good !, But the practical issue that we may see can be:-

1) The main issue is lack of participation or initiation by people ,
People are happy to create noise , Come chat etc. There is no real
participation. They are just too afraid to try out.

2) Can we provide enough brand name and recognition to the coders to
get them motivated for projects ?

My 2 cents

Great. I am inclined to give a talk on SLIME (the open source IDE of choice
for Common Lispers), rather than give a blow-by-blow introduction to CL,
which I think is more effectively done by reading a book. Plus, a practical
IDE demonstration should be a bit more entertaining than some plain language
 talk.

A language talk is always more interesting than IDE, IDE's are always
a matter of choice.

Still at the end it's your call :)

 What say?

if you really dont know what launchpad is, a bit of research would be

No, I don't think that Ubuntu is a good player in the free
software world, no. Ubuntu is all about making ubuntu better. That
helps some Ubuntu users, and is ano at all bad. But Ubuntu contributes
little to the rest of the free software world; and no matter how good

You think Ubuntu being good for Ubuntu users is all that matters
to be a good free software citizen.

Then let me define the basic of Free software for you. Free Software
is all about freedom and everybody is free to scratch their own back
and make the code open source so that everyone can download and reuse
it. Ubuntu is doing exactly that.

What Ubuntu is not doing, is spoonfeeding every project the fixes
which Ubuntu community make. And as Sandip said it`s more than
infrastructure and resource problem , Rather than intentionally not
doing it , or in your terms *being evil*

Anybody who thinks that it`s Easy to maintain all fixes in Upstream is
totally free taking a fork of Ubuntu and start maintaining all updates

that

So, a project that handles only a fraction of the packages
Debian does (only a couple thousand in the main repo, iirc), 95% of
which it pulls through unchanged from Debian (there does no work on
them), which handles one tenth of the architectures Debian supports,
with corporate backing from a billionaire (which Debian does not have),
they do less well of a job than unpaid Debian volunteers can, and for
that stellar performance, they are suppoosed to be criticism free?

Compare the number of volunteer contricuters of debian and ubuntu!

Compare the time-span of existence of ubuntu and debian !

Your above statement sounds to me like Telling a startup to close
it`s business , Because they are not as big as IBM

Be optimistic and look constructive

Exactly. Isnt that a part of what the point is - that their
development inhouse isnt really open at all ? Even the one product
they have which can be downloaded isnt open source at all.

You don't seem to have understood my question. What exactly are you

The implication was that Launchpad is closed source. That means

  software.

Google for launchpad free license or the ilk to see what this is
all about (shouldn't you have done that before posting?)

They do not report bugs, and they do not pass their fixes
upstream -- which is worse. As a specific example, fixes to my
code ought to being fed back to me (ucf, kernel-package, etc) -- just
like I feed back changes to my upstream using _their_ preferred means

The way things with changes are that if you make changes,
you pass them to the upstream developer, using their preferred means of
communication: that mean you use their mailing lists, their bug

Crazy idea , That means if i want to start a company or make a new OS

my quality time there , Not practical

Yes. Launchpad is not free.

Can you download the propieratery distribution link of Launchpad ?
Pass me the link if you find it

Isn't there a commitment from Canonical to open source it? Why don't
you go ask other companies provide online services to the community to
open source their server software? Quite a few of those come to mind!

All of the server software Debian uses to provide services
  (including debbugs) are free software.

And that makes Ubuntu evil, Cmmon !

That they lie about contributing back to Debian, hen they do not.

What makes you think that, Look at mark`s blog and you will find
