And for controlling mixer controls on your sound card, use 'alsamixer'

 are
probably controlling the mixer control of the running sound server, which
 is
not what you want when trying to debug this issue.

If your native laptop brightness controls aren't working for some
reason, you can use xgamma to make your X display brighter or darker.

xgamma -gamma 0.5 -- make screen dark
xgamma -gamma 1.3 -- make screen bright

Play around with the numbers to get the ones that suit you.

Sounds like the second one is the microphone jack, and the sound you're
hearing is a feedback loop between the mic and the speakers. Try
plugging the headphones into the first jack and using a mixer app (kmix
in KDE) to unmute the headphone channel.

I think, he will first kill Ballu and Mahima, (one less alien and one less

I will defiantly miss the fun filled Sunday evenings spent over food and
informative, fun filled discussions with the loud-mouthed ILUGD members
when I move to Bangalore. If there is any chance that the ILUGD members
stationed at Bangalore can recreate a small piece of Delhi in the barren
wastes of the mallu-land, I am  all for it :-)

Yes, since my accident I really miss the ILUGD meets. I still enjoy
remembering the Hot Chocolate Fudge.
Now I'm at Bangalore and yes, it really is a dead list.

It is a good opportunity for a coup d'etat . BLUG seems to have

there are now BoF meets attended by 3-4 people.

Well! there are many ways... the easiest and cheapest is to use the
email gateway of your service provider.

In the nagios contacts.cfg config where you write the email write the
cellphone's email address.. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

the other method is to get a sms gateway. another method could be to
attach a cellphone to the server and send messaged from the cellphone
via an api the cellphone vendor provides.

Both the links are working fine.

If you are able to access rediffmail, there is no reason for these
links to be unavailable... anyway pls. wait a response from someone
else as I don't have ready documentation available.

Alternatively, if you want to try; just boot the machine from first CD
and online help is available on the left panel of the installation

if you mean pgp/gpg signing then it is an authentication method.using your
key you sign your message which can then be verified by the recieveing
party.
it can also be used to encrypt messages only to be unencrypted by the
party who is supposed to recieve it provided they too have a pgp/gpg key
and you have their public key and they have yours.
i dont know if this is a good explanation.
you shoudl probably check the FAQ for the gnupg at:

hi manish,
welcome to the group. hope you find the active discussion useful. do not be
alarmed if you are a newbie and find most of the mailings rather technical.
in a few weeks you will be able to make out the trees from the woods(!)

do drop in at our linux user group delhi meet, scheduled for 21 sep, 2003,
sunday. watch this maling for further details.

hope you enjoy your gnulinux adventures, and can introduce more people to
the world of gnuLinux.

do also watch out for the free-for-all light-hearted banter that sometimes
crops up on the mailing. your best option as a newbie is to ignore it in
the first few days/weeks.

looking forward to your eventual contributions to the mailing list.

well to be technically fair,
he is quite in the right group.
he said hi to everyone in delhi !! ;-)

its just that he could have been much more safer and written,
hi everyone!! :)

welcome Sumil, but quite unlike this mail, previous mail by sanjeev and
yours earlier, generally the topic of discussion is substantive,
probably linux, and associated things...

wander in this world, and do call in for help, someone would drop in a
line or two... surely.

but the mantra always to remember is
Try, Try, Try,
.

.
and then try again.
If you are dead, then you wont need help,
if you are alive, you havent tried as much,
if you are flying, you are enjoying too much,
if you are shaving, you are bit clean too much,
if you are swimming, you are easing away too much,
.
.
in all other cases, we would try to help a genuine query.

[ilugd] Hi about the party.......

2003-07-18 Thread arjun kapur
Hi all

i was thinking more in terms of princess park dead on
the india gate cirlce it would be a fairly central
place for all interested. and it would not be alot of
problem organising the food, drinks, tables and
all.. what i am concerned about is what kind of
network will we have to setup.. the gear for the
network like the cable, hubs , nics, and if we have to
do gaming then as i understand linux would not suffice
. where as with regards to pcs iwas thinking more
like what happens in the US ... u bring you own and
customise it accordingly.. except for the computer
part i am in a position to do some thing about the
place n stuff well this would cost money that has to
be raised as well.. if some one has contacts.
that would be nice.. and yes the agenda for the
party should be having fun and going crazy..hehehe

i knew this was a *very* big idea...! :D
lets have it at rastrapati bhawan...

(wake up neo...!
welcome to disneyland... )

i mean seriously arjun, no offence, but it looks too too rosy from up
there...forget about having a party at india gate... try going close to
the india gate now. (update: the area is cordoned off even for
visitors... even in broad daylight..)

anyways, gauging the response.. its not the duh! response... so well
alls not bad..!!

i think i could think of a small get-together rather than a BIG
BANG... believe me the sponsoring/association part becomes quite a
hassle at the first go..!!

keep smiling

Another method is boot using win98 bootable disk, on the command prompt give
fdisk /mbr.
Any bootloader will disappear

I think you'd need to flush your mbr. There are many ways to do this. I
assume you donot have any data on your disk.
 1. use DOS formatted bootable floppy, or a win98 startup disk. Copy
fdisk.exe on this diskette. Boot through this floppy and type fdisk
/mbr. This should do the work.
 2. use seagate Disk Manager to partition the disk again. This is faster
 and effective.

Get back in case these don't work.

this might be because the mbr is written by the grub boot loader. And
ofcourse there is solution to this problem also, insert the winnt cd, go to
rescue mode and run FIXMBR.EXE, and ur problem will be solved..i hope
