My machine specs match and this is going out using Ubuntu on wireless.

You need to blacklist bcm43xx driver and use ndiswrapper to install
the original windows inf file. See my blog at blog.sudev.in for

Also, he paid for the Vista along with his PC.
The philosophy is not to force and convince people for using
Linux/Ubuntu. If a user can afford hefty sum for the Operating System,
he can use that. Linux and FOSS started for free availablity of OS and
software, and share the knowledge. There is really no agenda of forcing
or convincing people by this mean.

Many of us have had to buy laptops with Microsoft OSs simply because
there were very limited options where you could buy the hardware
without them.

The fact that the machine came pre-installed with a windows OS does
not prove anything. My machine came pre-installed with Windows. Sudev
has already written about his machine.

But I don't have too much disagreement with your overall point.

I think Ubuntu can resize and re-partition Windown NTFS partitions,

I think Ubuntu can resize and re-partition Windown NTFS partitions,
but I am not sure about Vista. Ubuntu will ask you during install.

I was recently trying to use Ubuntu to resize an NTFS partition
created by vista, only to find that ubuntu could not resize it.

Vista, as I mentioned in an earlier post, would resize it only by a
limited extent and not as much as I wanted.

Eventually I convinced the person whose machine I was setting up to
throw out Vista.

Off the topic, at the end of the day, I was unable to install ubuntu
on the machine either. It was a new AMD dual core HP laptop with
broadcom wireless lan and nvidia graphics card. Ubuntu feisty fawn did
not install either with the regular i386 CD or with the alternate
CD. I had an edubuntu 6.06 CD at hand but that would not install

The machine is in Kolkata (I am back in Delhi) waiting for somebody to
install ubuntu/debian. It is running WinXP at the moment, with a
partition kept for linux. Would much appreciate if somebody based in
Kolkata could help. (I know this thread was about something else, and
that this is Delhi LUG. Sorry.)

The recovery partition you got in HP is its specific drive, where your
vista is backup up. Did you get the VISTA bootable install CD? I think
you didnt. Vista is not distributed like this with HP. Its setup comes
preinstalled, and when you start computer for the first time, it
installs it. It let you make a backup CD's series, thats what you must
be having. If this is the case, you should not reinstall vista, just
make some room for Ubuntu, use Vista to resize the disk partition (Not
HP backup partition, but C: ) if it allows.
And bro, I have used Vista on friends PC, liked its Interface and minute
work in UI/Presentation, but I don;t own it. I just know something, for
more, pl;ease gooogle more and more till you are satisfied. Then
take the action.

Does that person is a old Linux user, familiar with Linux, or just you
convinced him for Linux because you love Linux. Have you considered his
works and software need feasibility before transfering him. many people
are there who uses certain software (and to a good skill) on Windows,
but either that alternative or full-featured alternative is not
available for Linux. You must consider those facts.

So Ubuntu got a bad option in his view. Everyone knows Linux has many
miles to go and we are advancing with better pace and successes. But
again, not only the security and viruses are reasons which should be
considered for migration. There are many others, which are more
prominent that these options.
It was a new AMD dual core HP laptop with
broadcom wireless lan and nvidia graphics card. Ubuntu feisty fawn did
not install either with the regular i386 CD or with the alternate

My friend came with AMD Dual, but Acer. I can successfully boot, but in
commandline, XServer diddnt started. Why? Many devices were unknown to
Ubuntu, e.g AGP, Network Interface(LAN), Wireless, Disk and PCI
Controller Hub and many others. I was not installing Ubuntu, but booted
to see the device Tags, so I can tell him what and where to download
Drivers for Windows XP.

Anyway, my personal experience is, when a person is really interested in
moving to Ubuntu, help him. Guide a person with the option Ubuntu if he
is in trouble, but also present the downside whatever be that. Be true,
don't rush to convert people to Linux.

Re: [ilugd] [OT]Wireless Router

2007-09-10 Thread Deepank Gupta
Hi Puneet,

You have two options regarding partitioning - either go for a clean
install by formatting the drive and dividing the whole into two
partitions - One for Ubuntu and one for Windows Vista.

Or a better option would be to resize the disk in Windows Vista as it
includes its own partition-resizing utility and create enough space
for Ubuntu to sit on.

Regarding your query on Wireless routers, you should either go for
NetGear which is a cheaper option which should be around 2k or go for
a slightly higher one byD-Link.

Deepank

Dump vista.

Vista's utility for resizing partitions is a pain. It generally allows
very limited resizing, sometimes asking for a minimum of 80-90 gb for
the C drive.

Microsoft has given up fat32 partitioning and vista does not do a fat32
partition.

Some of the common proprietary partitioning utilities like partition
magic do not work on vista. There are others that do and perhaps work
better than the vista's own utility. But they do not come free.

And qtparted, as far as I have seen, does not resize vista paritions.

In sum, throw out vista. Too bad you had to pay for it.
