Re: Which Mac group? The ALL MACS List!

2021-05-18 Thread Russell Courtenay
I know this is the iMac group but I appreciate the email discussion and it
looks like this is the only email group on Macs that has survived Facebook! I
am on Facebook too but wow is it a time waster...

I’ve done a lot of research on the older MacBook Pros and I think 2012 is where
it’s at. I have a 2010 and it is getting too slow to do much, with all the
video conferencing we do these days it won’t do AirPlay well so my family can
participate.

My 2011 17” is beautiful and fast but has the graphics issue. As I have time I
will apply the hardware fix but I needed something that works now.

I really wanted a 2015 or 2016 but with the butterfly keyboard issues
unresolved I finally paid a bit more and got a 2019 16” MacBook Pro and it is a
dream. Now I just need to do enough work with it to make it pay for itself
somehow...

Now that my older MacBooks are retired from daily use I hope to make mods to
them to make them work well into the 21st century!

By the way, where are you located Paul?

I am in the SW Idaho USA high desert, been living in the rurals and farming for
years but now struggling to get used to living in the city. I like the good
internet at least...

Re: Video editing question

2020-12-20 Thread Russell Courtenay
I will be interested to see others comments on this, I have been using iMovie
since I got an OS X machine in 2008 for my silly YouTube channel and love it.

My first videos edited and played nicely on my 400MHz Pismo but the 4 minute
video took 20 hours to render to MP4 and then I couldn’t play them back! Still
there on YouTube and work fine on newer machines...

Keychain loosing passwords

2020-08-08 Thread 'Russell Courtenay' via iMac Group
This is what I fear: Apple suggests a ‘secure’ password there is no way you’ll
remember so you try it. Then it never gets saved in your password! Sometimes I
enter a password on a website and in never asks ‘do you want to save that
password?’

Is this unusual? It has happened to me several times, I have a password file in
my file cabinet but seriously, with 500 plus online logins, it is not up to
date. Now with greater security on Google and the like, I guess they are
physically reviewing reset requests and it takes days...

Thinking about using password manager software but isn’t that what iCloud is
supposed to be doing?

Now I am in the recovery process with Google that will take a couple days. I am
still logged in on my iPhone (password not saved there) but of course, google
now blocks messages from downloading to my phone so only the previews are
there.

This is a family email account I started in April of 2019 and never used, I use
it today and- locked out.

I don’t use my iMac much but it still the family server and backup machine,
maybe it is time to replace it...

Re: Early 2009 iMac with Sierra (unsupported)-Brightness won't work

2017-07-12 Thread Russell Courtenay
OK, I am not planning on upgrading my 2008 iMac, it is slow enough as it is. As
soon as I get some other things working, I will reinstall Snow Leopard on a
separate partition then, if I don't replace it, I plan to upgrade memory and/or
logicboard.

I like this quote from the article though:

"You may notice the compatibility list for MacOS Sierra 10.12 is a little
curious because some of the Macs that are incompatible have better hardware
than some of the hardware that is included in the compatible list. It’s unclear
why this is, but this does suggest that support for MacOS Sierra is not just a
matter of hardware specs alone, as the minimum system requirements for macOS
Sierra are not clearly defined by minimum CPU type or speed, RAM, GPU, or disk
capacity. That makes macOS Sierra a little unusual compared to some of the
other Mac OS X releases from years past, but as time goes on we may get a
clearer picture as to why this is."

Re: USB Digital Video Converter

2017-04-16 Thread Russell Courtenay
So I finally got a chance to test this thing and the USB extension cable
supplied is no good, it shows up when plugged directly into the USB port, not
through the cable. Shows up on both the PC and the iMac but I can’t get any
video feed from my Sony Hi8 8mm video camera.

I think it may be the output on the camera but I only have an s-video cable
(the later Sonys use a proprietary 4 conductor 3.5mm composite video cable that
I don’t have and will take two weeks to get from eBay). I tired a composite
cable with an s-video adapter and that didn’t work either.

I have the old Sony most of these tapes were originally recorded on and it has
composite outputs but it was dropped (and I then found out it had been dropped
and glued back together BEFORE I bought it as when I opened it up I found lots
of broken glue joints). I haven’t tried it in a while but as I recall it also
had a tracking problem.

I really hate video tapes and their tracking problems, seems like every VCR I
have had over the years has had the tracking and a belt or two go out and you
have to remove a LOT of screws to fix either…

I have a third Sony video camera but it doesn’t work at all. This is getting
pretty complicated…

I did find more video tapes I didn’t know I had including one of me playing my
guitar the our local Cherry Festival in 1999! I guess I could just watch it on
the 1.5” LCD on the camera with sound on only one side of the headphones….

I usually use Exact Audio Copy (PC only) as it works very hard to make an exact

Re: Error 36 while copying a file

2017-01-27 Thread Russell Courtenay
That's a good idea, using USB thumb drives.

DVDs do go bad, unfortunately. I have a recording of our band's first outing,
I made mp3s of the Individual songs but didn't keep the original file on the
hard drive. I can see where the data is on the disc but is shows up as empty on
all of our devices.

I also have install DVDs of every version of Mac OS I have used, I hope they
are OK

Hmmm... Just thought of something: how about using a miniITX board inside an
iMac G4 for a realMac Hackintosh? Is the G4 screen standard VGA?

Thinking of selling my 20" iMac

2017-01-04 Thread Russell Courtenay
Just checking if anyone has seen the elusive 2.93 GHz quad i7 17" MacBook Pro.
I've seen a lot of 2.66 GHz units on eBay go from $500+ but no 2.93s.
Downsizing a bit and looking to sell off my 2008 iMac 2.66 core 2 duo with
3.0GB hard drive. I paid a pretty reasonable $425 for it in 2011, figure it is
probably worth $300? Still has the stock 2GB of ram so it is a little doggie
with El Cap but it gets the job done...

I thought this was an interesting article about why the 17" is no longer made
but why STILL after 5 years?!?

Re: Macs and viruses

2016-11-18 Thread Russell Courtenay
Great info for all of us especially coming from a professional environment,
Bruce, thanks.

Priorities are important in data security. Even on Windows the only virus I
ever had was the 'kak.worm' many years ago, and it didn't infect anything
because I was still using text only for my email. It was interesting dissecting
it to figure out how it worked, a very complex combination of programming
languages as I recall. (I got kicked off a JavaScript forum for asking too many
questions about how the kak.worm worked, I guess they thought I was dangerous!)

I have had several hard drive failures though, I still have one with 9 months
of data stuck on it that needs a new main board to resurrect it, so for me at
least, hardware problems are the more immediate threat.

This modern ransomware threat is scary, I have a separate, removable external
hard drive for weekly backup for this reason on the PC server, just wish I
could get Windows to recognize the mirrored raid on the main drive!

Well, I wish I could get the wife to agree to work on MacOS, it was setup as a
Hackintosh but I removed MacOS as it was an additional layer of complication
she didn't want and a Hackintosh is not always stable either....

Re: Printer recommendations?

2016-10-22 Thread Russell Courtenay
Ours is an Epson Workforce 840. We can get refilled cartridges pretty easily
but even with genuine Epson cartridges the photo print quality is poor. And it
keeps clogging, I got a cleaner kit and it seems to work pretty well (takes
overnight a couple times to unclog) but then a couple months later it is
clogged again. I would like to believe it is cheap ink but it happens with
Epson ink too.

Re: Feeling very stupid about printer setup...

2016-10-04 Thread Russell Courtenay
What's weird though is we have an older Epson wifi printer (older than
AirPrint) so we have been manually setting it up in the PrinterPro app on the
iPhones each time we use it (every time we reset the router - which is A LOT-
it reassigns up addresses, so we have to set it up manually again), now
suddenly, it automatically shows up as a Bonjour printer and WORKS! Not sure if
some slipped in a software update or something but it does work...

Re: Printer recommendations?

2016-09-29 Thread Russell Courtenay
I used my brother HL-645 from 1993 till the mid 2000s, replaced the drum once,
finally replaced the printer because parallel ports were OUT! I would buy a
brother again, am thinking about going color laser. Anyone have any model
recommendations? Old and cheap preferred, of course!

Re: Free OS reimplementations (Re: OS X backup script)

2016-08-06 Thread Russell Courtenay
Wow cool! Great stuff!

I guess I really like the old days of computing where efficiency and every Hz
mattered, I frankly don’t understand why the 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo with 2 gigs of
RAM in my iMac is so slow sometimes on a modern OS when as I recall on my
BLAZING 50 MHz Amiga I had NO such slowdowns.

I know, I know, applications like modern internet browsers require massive
processing power to play the multi-media content we so enjoy and all this power
is relatively cheap, but can’t we just scale it back 'a little’ to make it work
well on an eight year old machine like mine?

I know it IS possible with SLIGHTLY different priorities as to where this power
is used in an operating system to make things work better but that doesn’t
encourage the purchase of new systems which makes world economies work!

The open Unix OS variants are, I suppose, the best example of this, but I
REALLY like the Mac OS environment and hardware, it seems to be the modern
vision of what Amiga would be.

I will cut this off in a minute before it turns into a multi-page rant about
system design and needs but I will say it seems we are truly living in a ‘post
PC’ world:

Most people don’t really NEED a computer for the daily activities of life, our
iPads and iPhones do what we need (they now have ALMOST as much processing
power as this old iMac!) It seems when they hit ‘the GHz ceiling' of about 4
GHz eight years or so years ago, they couldn’t go much faster so now just ‘add
cores’ and increase efficiency, they are now up to 1000 cores that runs off of
a AA battery! Max 1.78 trillion operations per second!!! But people in general
DO NOT NEED such speed when a five year old, quad core, sub 4.0 GHz computer
does everything we need at reasonable speed, why upgrade?!? Of course, I WANT a
1000 core computer, if just to see what I could come up with to use all that
power for!

http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/1000-core-laptop-aa-battery-energy-efficient-uc-davis/

Anyway, thanks for the links, lots to ponder there...

Re: OS X backup script

2016-08-06 Thread Russell Courtenay
I want to write my own script, if just to prove I am still a ‘programmer’ but
expedience will take over for the moment, I downloaded SuperDuper and the free
version looks like it will do what I need. I will try it tonight on ‘Smart
Update’ so it will just copy over the updated files…

Thanks for the advice, maybe one day I will sit down and write up my little
script then maybe another day I will stop being ‘old school’ and move up to
Time Machine. I’m just used to having a bootable backup as I have always worked
with old computers, prone to failure and like the slight bit of extra security.

I still would like to work on an ‘open source’ version of the OS X interface to
work over Darwin, I dunno, just because. From the days of the Commodore PET I
always wanted to be involved in writing my own OS…

The main thing is getting all the 'switches' right then getting it to show some
kind of progress output, I guess...

I'll check into that...

OS X backup script

2016-08-05 Thread Russell Courtenay
I have been using Carbon Copy Cloner for years to make a bootable (ostensibly)
backup. Well, they seem to have changed their shareware setup so after a
certain amount of time it stops working. I just don't have $39.95 to spend on
software today so I figured I would write a script in Automator. But I really
don't know what I'm doing. My programming really hasn't kept pace beyond
Commodore Basic and machine language and Y2K web pages.

I found some basic instructions online to make a scheduled backup but that is
not really what I want. I just want a button I can click every couple days to
copy every new file, delete files on the backup that I have deleted on my hard
drive and keep it bootable in case I need it.

Seems simple enough, has anyone here done this?

On the wife's PC I just set up an xcopy batch file, simple and dirty. I wish it
would tell me what is happening over those two hours it is working, but it does
seem to work.

Trouble booting from external drive

2016-06-22 Thread Russell Courtenay
Recently got a NewerTech 1TB FireWire drive from OWC for backup (my first NEW
accessory purchase in years!) but figured I should partition my internal drive
for El Capitan, Snow Leopard and Data as it is a 2008 iMac and will not be
upgrading further in OS. On 2 gigs of ram it is already really slow on El Cap
so I want to try it on Snow Leopard.

Backed up and tried the restart to boot from the NewerTech drive and
got the circle X symbol and it booted from the internal drive. Ran Disk Utility
on the external drive, it made some minor fixes, same thing.

I won't be able to try again till tomorrow night but what do I try next?

The only other problem I've had with this drive is I cannot unmount it, when I
want to disconnect it I have to shut down the computer or I get the warning
that it is 'in use'. Not sure what is up with that either...

Re: second hand Mac--no administrative password

2016-06-16 Thread Russell Courtenay
Yes, Apple would be glad to sell you another but I'm sure a large proportion of
the locked iPhones are NOT stolen and Apple making them completely inoperable
is quite wasteful and closes the market to people who could repair them and put
them to use when they might not be able to buy a new one.

I know I have an iPhone 4s with a bad wifi chip and currently off of cell
service. I would like to reset it and at least sell it for someone else to use
but I can't unless I find a cooperative Verizon tech to turn off my current
phone, turn on the 4s for a minute to reset it, then turn my current phone back
on. A ridiculously complicated process that last time I went through (with
another 4s) took HOURS on the phone.

Of course I could just replace the wifi chip...

Re: SSD over Firewire 800/400

2016-05-07 Thread Russell Courtenay
An interesting fact about broken iMacs: the 27" iMacs of around 2011 vintage
have a nasty habit of bad connections to the graphics chip. If you don't mind
the challenge of a full iMac tear down, you can find a 27" with bad graphics
for under $300 and fix it with a $75 "reball" job (and of course that full iMac
rebuild)!

There was one nearby recently but I passed on it, I think I'll snag it next
time!

Re: SSD over Firewire 800/400

2016-05-06 Thread Russell Courtenay
I have a 2008 20" iMac 2.66 Core2Duo with 2 GB of ram, a 3TB hard drive and
10.11.4 and sometimes it is dog slow. I can get 6 GB of ram used for about $70
on eBay and am thinking that might help.

The modern Internet uses a phenomenal amount of resources just to view it.
Firefox wants 1+ gig of ram usually but works better after a regular restart of
the browser (of course if I closed half of those 2000 open tabs it might help!)

The latest version of Safari shows ram usage for each tab and for some reason
when I open a simple Yahoo search it suddenly wants 2 gigs just for that tab
and here comes the beachball!

I know ram is MY problem as whenever something suddenly slows down I try to get
to the Activity Monitor - Memory window and find Firefox wants more ram than
I've got! And of course it is trying to swap to hard drive to make it all fit
which is where the beachball comes in...

Adobe Flash is another thing, nearly unusable, allow it to start and suddenly
Firefox wants an ADDITIONAL 2 gigs of ram! No way!

Most everything else works pretty well, even old iMovie 8 from 2010.
