Tony, does your current script do detection based on Windows NT version? If so, you can add a line to detect Windows NT 6.1. Actually, rumor has it the HP Slate has been kicked to the curb: http://techcrunch.com/2010/04/29/hewlett-packard-to-kill-windows-7-table t-project/ So maybe the holdouts can just pick up their iPad instead of waiting for the Slate now (me included). -Original Message- From: Richardson,Tony [mailto:trichard...@humboldt.k12.ia.us] Sent: Friday, April 30, 2010 8:33 AM To: info-tech@aea8.k12.ia.us Subject: RE: [info-tech] First 18 hours with an IPad... Before we get into this, understand this is an honest no holds barred review. I will use some rough and possibly insulting language, but if you read it with an open mind, I think there is some valuable information, even if it is presented rather vividly. I will likely be submitting this same review word for word to Amazon and some other sites. A few years back, there was a kid who was about 14 who had an IQ of about 40, but he could listen to a piece of music once and be able to play it on a piano note for note. This ability really made him kind of cool, but at the end of the day, you just can't escape that he's still retarded. That's the Ipad in a nutshell. Despite that, I am giving this a solid buy recommendation for schools. If that makes no sense, read on, and it will. If I try to compare this to windows 7, and I will, it's kinda worthless. The HP Slate is coming out in a couple months, and it will do everything that an IPad does, and everything that a windows 7 laptop does, and costs less, or about the same actually. If you are a computer geek, like me, then the slate is a much better product. But we use the Kindle here a lot. Mainly the kindle is used is remedial reading and special-ed because the kindle will read aloud to a student, showing them the word being pronounced. Like most programs of this nature, it's got it's problems, most notably lousy inflection and pacing. But it's no worse than anything out there, and allows virtually any book to be used without additional processing. The Ipad has a Kindle app, and though I haven't fully tested it, I have no reason to think it functions any different. Now don't get me wrong, I like the kindle, for me. But I'm not buying for me. Sure, the battery life rocks. Two weeks of a single charge, that is just awesome, the ability to buy through the cellular network without buying another account? Priceless. But the weak point on a kindle has always been it's administration. Basically, if it's on there, the kid has access to it. That includes google searches for porn. On the Ipad, if I don't want a kid to surf the internet, they don't. If I don't want them to load apps, they don't. You tube? Email? Whatever, they don't, or should I say they can't. As you all know, keeping kids out of where they do not belong is always a losing battle, special-ed is even more of a challenge than the other students. That's the cool part as far as actually useful stuff goes. Sure, there are a lot of educational apps, great, great. The predictive text feature is awful from what I've seen of it, I'm working on installing an app that is supposed to be much better. But really, that's the business end of the review. Now there's the fun stuff, or thing I should say. Google Maps is included with the Ipad, and for a damn good reason. It takes total advantage of the multitouch interface. This is beyond ubercool. This one goes straight to Geek Nirvana. I fell in lust with Google Maps, and once I showed it to my girlfriend and her daughter, they proceeded to fight over it for an hour. If you have not tried this, there is just no explaining how awesome this feature is. If I could plug in GPS, it would probably throw me into a transcendental state where I spent he next 20 years in a darkened room playing with the user interface and creating the Church of Jobs. Or at least until the battery died. Ok, so here's the summary. This is a niche market thing. It's great for schools and especially special-ed. But if you are looking for a productive device, wait for the HP Slate. --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by Declude Virus on the server aea8.k12.ia.us] - Archived messages from this list can be found at: http://www.mail-archive.com/info-tech@aea8.k12.ia.us/ - --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by Declude Virus on the server aea8.k12.ia.us] - Archived messages from this list can be found at: http://www.mail-archive.com/info-tech@aea8.k12.ia.us/ - ---

RE: [info-tech] called up to the MAJORS
I believe that the APC Symmetra line does on-line double-conversion. This is the route that we are moving in the future due, not only to the on-line functionality, but also because of the module-based layout (add more kVA later), redundancy and hot-swappable batteries. The APC units are Standby (equipment runs on line power and quickly switches to inverter when needed) UPS. Not that I have had any real issues with them I like the Idea of On-Line UPS better where the UPS inverter is always supplying power to the equipment. They are also a little happier when connected to a back-up generator than Standby UPS units. CyberPower Online Double Conversion would be my recommendation. http://www.cyberpowersystems.com/products/ups-systems/ups-selector.html The software included allows for a single machine to connect via USB, then it will chain to any number of servers via software. So now if you have several servers on a single UPS all the servers can shut down gracefully in the event of a UPS low battery. I have a couple installed and have been very happy with them. RE: [info-tech] Smartboards
We've been through support nightmares with SmartTech at Sheldon. Parts take 6-8 weeks to arrive, phone calls and emails go unanswered, and when they do reply (by phone or email) it takes days or even weeks to get a technician who is familiar with the issue. In other words, it takes significant trouble to get to a higher-level support technician at Smart who does something other than read from their canned-answer book. One of the power supplies inside of the 2000i and 3000i mobile Smartboards has gone out on almost all of the units, and of course, this part isn't covered under warranty, and the only place to get one is from SmartTech themselves for $120+. The 600i units have been nothing but trouble also, and it appears that they have gone so far as to cancel that line now. I think between the front- and rear-projection units, Sheldon owns about 32 Smartboard products, and the only units that we haven't had trouble with are the standalone wall-mounted boards with a separately-purchased projector. Needless to say, we're researching alternatives. -Original Message- From: Mark Johnson [mailto:mjohn...@west-bend.k12.ia.us] Sent: Thursday, May 07, 2009 3:19 PM To: info-tech@aea8.k12.ia.us Subject: RE: [info-tech] Smartboards We just had a mimio demonstration by Travis Wiltgen Tuesday. I'm sure a few of you will have questions concerning e-waste recycled through us. Hopefully I can cover them all in this short E-Mail Q. What happens to our 'stuff' once it has arrived at your facility? A. We break everything down into roughly 8 categories- Computers Computer Monitors TV's Printers Miscellaneous Items (VCR's, Radio's, Recording Device's, typewriters, things like this) Keyboards Mice Flat Screen Monitors From there, each category is once again broke down completely by de-manufacturing everything in house. By the time we are done, we have roughly 16 commodities ready for shredding/smelting or re-use. Q. I am concerned with the information that may be left on the hard drives even though we did a complete wipe, what do you do to insure me that my information is safe? A. We take this very seriously. We start by using our in house Veridan Hard drive de-gausser. This unit will 'fry' a hard drive in roughly 5 seconds, and any drive up to 500mb. This physically destroys the media disk located inside the drive. This deems the drive inoperable and unusable. From there, we cage drives up and transport to an undisclosed shredding facility right here in Iowa. We then recover the aluminum scrap for breakage. Q. What happens to our CRT Glass? Do you recycle it on site, and are you permitted to recycle these items? A. As I noted before, we de-manufacture everything in house. CRT Tubes are binned, weighed, and shipped to Doe Run, St Louis Mo for crushing and lead extraction. We call this Glass-to-Glass recycling.
RE: [info-tech] Fw:
Well typically, those old 7 and 18 GB SCSI drives and 40GB ATA drives aren't worth the metal they're made from, so it's simply more cost-effective to destroy them in seconds rather than hooking them up and using software to erase to DOD standards. And if the DOD standards for erasing hard drives are anything like their standards for intrusion prevention, then I don't feel that safe (http://blogs.spectrum.ieee.org/riskfactor/2008/03/dod_admits_to_being_s everely_h.html). Besides, we don't want to assume that there isn't any data on those hard drives that would be valuable to anyone, so rather than taking the time to scan for data and information on those drives, they simply get destroyed. They're having a rough time staying up with all the bandwidth being used I assume. I've noticed a number of Microsoft's sites down today (eOpen, TechNet, WindowsTeamBlog). Unfortunately, I don't know if they're allowing 2.5 million downloads of the .iso files, or if they're taking 2.5 million requests for serial numbers. From: Timothy A. RE: [info-tech] Network monitor system
Mitch, there are (expensive) broad-based testing applications and hardware, and there are specific applications (less-expensive, and some free). What type of problems are you experiencing? Dropped packets? VLAN errors? There are programs like PRTG or ManageEngine Netflow Analyzer that will give details, but may not specifically say Here is your issue. [info-tech] Schools soon required to teach web safety
Schools soon required to teach web safety Schools receiving e-Rate discounts on their telecommunications services and internet access soon will have to educate their students about online safety, sexual predators, and cyber bullying, thanks to federal legislation passed in both the Senate and the House. The Broadband Data Improvement Act (S.1492), sponsored by Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, requires the Federal Trade Commission to carry out a national public awareness program focused on educating children how to use the internet in safe and responsible ways. The legislation also establishes an Online Safety and Technology Working Group charged with evaluating online safety education efforts, parental control technologies, filtering and blocking software, and more. http://www.eschoolnews.com/news/top-news/index.cfm?i=7 Oct 10, 2008: Became Public Law No: 110-385 Full text of bill: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=s110-1492

RE: [info-tech] Email archiving
I burn a PST file (which gives me a great searching tool) to DVD every month, which is generally around 4GB. So the storage needed is minimal as long as I archive to DVD, otherwise, there is about 5GB of uncompressed email generated every month. -Original Message- From: Richardson,Tony [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, September 26, 2008 5:43 AM To: info-tech@aea8.k12.ia.us Subject: RE: [info-tech] Email archiving Sounds good, how much storage is required for journaling? [info-tech] Password Policies and Substitute Teachers
At Sheldon School, like every school, our policies state that you may not give your password to ANYONE. However, when a sub needs to come in for a teacher, previously, that sub has been given the password for the teacher to use. However, this of course violates the policies, and because that sub would be able to access the email for that teacher, they are not comfortable with this. The options that I have come up with, including creating a special drop folder accessible by subs where teachers could drop their assignments only work if the teacher knows in advance that they will be gone. How do other districts handle these situations? RE: [info-tech]
Mitch, likely that means that the AD location (CN=username,OU=x,OU=x,DC=local,DC=emmetsburg,DC=k12,DC=ia,DC=us) is incorrect. If you have your students in different OUs (say, by the year of graduation), then you will have to change the UserDN accordingly. Another possible reason for that error might be that you are pointing to an object (like a computer or group) that does not support 'dsmod user'.
