Tony, does your current script do detection based on Windows NT version?
If so, you can add a line to detect Windows NT 6.1.

Anyone got a logon vbscript that detects Windows 7. If this is on the
internet I guess I'm not asking the right questions in order to find it.

Actually, rumor has it the HP Slate has been kicked to the curb:

So maybe the holdouts can just pick up their iPad instead of waiting for
the Slate now (me included).

Before we get into this, understand this is an honest no holds barred
review. I will use some rough and possibly insulting language, but if
you read it with an open mind, I think there is some valuable
information, even if it is presented rather vividly. I will likely be
submitting this same review word for word to Amazon and some other
sites.

A few years back, there was a kid who was about 14 who had an IQ of
about 40, but he could listen to a piece of music once and be able to
play it on a piano note for note. This ability really made him kind of
cool, but at the end of the day, you just can't escape that he's still
retarded.

That's the Ipad in a nutshell.

Despite that, I am giving this a solid buy recommendation for schools.
If that makes no sense, read on, and it will.

If I try to compare this to windows 7, and I will, it's kinda worthless.
The HP Slate is coming out in a couple months, and it will do everything
that an IPad does, and everything that a windows 7 laptop does, and
costs less, or about the same actually. If you are a computer geek, like
me, then the slate is a much better product.

But we use the Kindle here a lot. Mainly the kindle is used is remedial
reading and special-ed because the kindle will read aloud to a student,
showing them the word being pronounced. Like most programs of this
nature, it's got it's problems, most notably lousy inflection and
pacing. But it's no worse than anything out there, and allows virtually
any book to be used without additional processing.

The Ipad has a Kindle app, and though I haven't fully tested it, I have
no reason to think it functions any different.

Now don't get me wrong, I like the kindle, for me. But I'm not buying
for me. Sure, the battery life rocks. Two weeks of a single charge, that
is just awesome, the ability to buy through the cellular network without
buying another account? Priceless.

But the weak point on a kindle has always been it's administration.
Basically, if it's on there, the kid has access to it. That includes
google searches for porn.

On the Ipad, if I don't want a kid to surf the internet, they don't. If
I don't want them to load apps, they don't. You tube? Email? Whatever,
they don't, or should I say they can't. As you all know, keeping kids
out of where they do not belong is always a losing battle, special-ed is
even more of a challenge than the other students.

That's the cool part as far as actually useful stuff goes. Sure, there
are a lot of educational apps, great, great. The predictive text feature
is awful from what I've seen of it, I'm working on installing an app
that is supposed to be much better. But really, that's the business end
of the review.

Now there's the fun stuff, or thing I should say.

Google Maps is included with the Ipad, and for a damn good reason. It
takes total advantage of the multitouch interface. This is beyond
ubercool. This one goes straight to Geek Nirvana. I fell in lust with
Google Maps, and once I showed it to my girlfriend and her daughter,
they proceeded to fight over it for an hour. If you have not tried this,
there is just no explaining how awesome this feature is. If I could plug
in GPS, it would probably throw me into a transcendental state where I
spent he next 20 years in a darkened room playing with the user
interface and creating the Church of Jobs.

Or at least until the battery died.

Ok, so here's the summary.

This is a niche market thing. It's great for schools and especially
special-ed. But if you are looking for a productive device, wait for the
HP Slate.

Ok, so I'm rebuilding my exchange 2003 server after a bit of a nightmare

I've got pretty much everything up and going, and I figure as long as
I've got everyone good and PO'd already, I might as well take some time
to get OMA (Outlook Mobile Access) up and going.

Well, I've bone everything by the book, and when that didn't work I read

Nevermind, that IS the error you are receiving.

Open IIS, right-click the web site, and select Properties

Under the Directory Security tab, select the second button from the
top (don't remember what it is called)

Select the Granted Access option, and remove any IP addresses listed
the box. Apply changes and do an IISRESET (I think stopping and
restarting the site in question is often enough).

Just an FYI:

I have moved my Intermapper system to our server room to ensure
continued monitoring in the event of a power outage in Fort Dodge. With
the move I have also changed the IP address and port number of the
Intermapper Web server.

In an effort to bring all technical resources together to one spot I
have also been working on a new website portal for you to access
Intermapper and other tools. The Web Portal is still a work in process
but does currently have links to our Trouble Ticket System, as well as
Intermapper.

To access the Technology Web Portal go to the URL www.ia-hsdn.net

From the portal page you will be able to access Intermapper.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Thanks.

RE: [info-tech] called up to the MAJORS

2009-10-05 Thread Stanzel, Matt
I believe that the APC Symmetra line does on-line double-conversion.
This is the route that we are moving in the future due, not only to the
on-line functionality, but also because of the module-based layout (add
more kVA later), redundancy and hot-swappable batteries.

Subject: Re: [info-tech] called up to the MAJORS

I am moving to recommending something other than APC for UPS units. The
APC units are Standby (equipment runs on line power and quickly
switches to inverter when needed) UPS. Not that I have had any real
issues with them I like the Idea of On-Line UPS better where the UPS
inverter is always supplying power to the equipment. They are also a
little happier when connected to a back-up generator than Standby UPS
units. CyberPower Online Double Conversion would be my
recommendation.

http://www.cyberpowersystems.com/products/ups-systems/ups-selector.html

The software included allows for a single machine to connect via USB,
then it will chain to any number of servers via software. So now if you
have several servers on a single UPS all the servers can shut down
gracefully in the event of a UPS low battery.

I have a couple installed and have been very happy with them.

RE: [info-tech] PC Ipod recording

2009-07-21 Thread Stanzel, Matt
Paul, a PC equivalent (though much more in-depth than Garage Band) would
be Acid Music:

http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/musicstudio (Basic version)

However, it has been years since I've seen Garage Band, so the features
that I remember may no longer be the standard, meaning the equivalency
of the above products may be an incorrect assumption.

RE: [info-tech] XP Keyboard is funky

2009-06-08 Thread Stanzel, Matt
Mitch, it sounds like you have a stuck 'CTRL' or 'ALT' key. Try pushing both
(on both sides) with a little force to see if you can feel it come loose.
Sometimes though, you can't feel it come loose, but it does in fact loosen up.
You might have to pop the keys themselves off if you don't have any luck.

I have a laptop here that has one messed up keyboard. I turned it on this
morning and when I press ctrl alt delete to log in, it brings up the log in
screen like normal. But when I start pressing the first letter of the
password, s, it brings up the shutdown menu. Does anyone know what I'm

RE: [info-tech] Smartboards

2009-05-07 Thread Stanzel, Matt
We've been through support nightmares with SmartTech at Sheldon. Parts
take 6-8 weeks to arrive, phone calls and emails go unanswered, and when
they do reply (by phone or email) it takes days or even weeks to get a
technician who is familiar with the issue. In other words, it takes
significant trouble to get to a higher-level support technician at Smart
who does something other than read from their canned-answer book. One of
the power supplies inside of the 2000i and 3000i mobile Smartboards has
gone out on almost all of the units, and of course, this part isn't
covered under warranty, and the only place to get one is from SmartTech
themselves for $120+. The 600i units have been nothing but trouble also,
and it appears that they have gone so far as to cancel that line now.

I think between the front- and rear-projection units, Sheldon owns about
32 Smartboard products, and the only units that we haven't had trouble
with are the standalone wall-mounted boards with a separately-purchased
projector. Needless to say, we're researching alternatives.

Once again this year during Earth Week, April 20th thru April 24th
Phoenix E-Waste Solutions LLC in Marshalltown Iowa will be holding an
E-Cycling Drive for Schools located throughout all of Iowa. This
E-Cycling drive is geared towards reducing and diverting toxic wastes
from area landfills.

Recycling Fee Schedule:

CRT Computer Monitors: $6.00 Each

Flat Pannel Computer Monitors: $5.00 each

Desktop Printers: $2.00 each

PC's, Miscellanious items such as: Keyboards, mice, speakers, cables,
overhead projectors are accepted at no charge.

Collection will take place during the week of April 20th. Items must be
palletized and wrapped for trucking. Please contact Brett or Mike with
Phoenix E-Waste at 1-641-753-7200 or e-mail us at
pesoluti...@iowatelecom.net to schedule a pickup or for further
questions.

I'm sure a few of you will have questions concerning e-waste recycled
through

us. Hopefully I can cover them all in this short E-Mail

Q. What happens to our 'stuff' once it has arrived at your facility?

A. We break everything down into roughly 8 categories-

Computers

Computer Monitors

TV's

Printers

Miscellaneous Items (VCR's, Radio's, Recording Device's, typewriters,
things

like this)

Keyboards

Mice

Flat Screen Monitors

From there, each category is once again broke down completely by

de-manufacturing everything in house. By the time we are done, we have

roughly 16 commodities ready for shredding/smelting or re-use.

Q. I am concerned with the information that may be left on the hard
drives even

though we did a complete wipe, what do you do to insure me that my
information

is safe?

A. We take this very seriously. We start by using our in house Veridan
Hard

drive de-gausser. This unit will 'fry' a hard drive in roughly 5
seconds, and

any drive up to 500mb. This physically destroys the media disk located
inside

the drive. This deems the drive inoperable and unusable. From there,
we cage

drives up and transport to an undisclosed shredding facility right here
in

Iowa. We then recover the aluminum scrap for breakage.

Q. What happens to our CRT Glass? Do you recycle it on site, and are
you

permitted to recycle these items?

A. As I noted before, we de-manufacture everything in house. CRT Tubes
are

binned, weighed, and shipped to Doe Run, St Louis Mo for crushing and
lead

extraction. We call this Glass-to-Glass recycling.

RE: [info-tech] Fw:

2009-04-06 Thread Stanzel, Matt
Well typically, those old 7 and 18 GB SCSI drives and 40GB ATA drives
aren't worth the metal they're made from, so it's simply more
cost-effective to destroy them in seconds rather than hooking them up
and using software to erase to DOD standards. And if the DOD standards
for erasing hard drives are anything like their standards for intrusion
prevention, then I don't feel that safe
(http://blogs.spectrum.ieee.org/riskfactor/2008/03/dod_admits_to_being_s
everely_h.html).

Besides, we don't want to assume that there isn't any data on those hard
drives that would be valuable to anyone, so rather than taking the time
to scan for data and information on those drives, they simply get
destroyed.

Provided is a link to a scanner that should detect the presence of the
Conficker worm. It comes from a link I trust so I believe it is
 safe to run
on your networks. The tool can scan all the active computers on your
 network for the worm.

FYI: here is the link threads
  http://isc.sans.org/diary.html?storyid=6097
  http://honeynet.org/node/388

 ---
 Start by downloading
http://www.doxpara.com/scs.zip (This is a link from the
 honeynet.org/node/388 page)
 to a windows workstation.

Once downloaded extract the files. The extracted SCS folder contains
 another SCS folder.
Move the second folder to the root of the C:\ drive so all the files
 are in
 C:\SCS
 Open up a 'Command' prompt
 type 'c:'
 type 'cd \scs'
Scan the local machine first by typing:
 'scanner localhost'
The results will show in the window when complete.
 --
 To scan the network, type:
 'scs start-ip end-ip scslog.txt'
where start-ip is the lowest IP address you want to scan (10.147.0.1)
end-ip is the highest IP address you want to scan (10.147.0.254)
The results will be saved to c:\scs\scslog.txt
 --
Note: When running 'scs.exe' it takes a long time to scan
 unassigned IP
addresses. I would recommend that if you have a subnet mask of
 255.255.0.0
that you run the program several times on ranges that you know have
computers. Check your DHCP server and verify the high and low IP
 addresses
that are currently assigned to get your starting place. I would
 also run
 against server IP addresses.

If you run the program several times change the 'scslog.txt'
 filename to a
 unique name for every scan.

 Another note:
When using the redirect '' all output that would typically show on
 the
screen is redirected to the text file. Once you launch the 'scs'
 command
the screen will not show anything. When the program is done the c:\
 prompt
 will return.
 ---
Open the scslog.txt file with notepad to see the results of the scan.

 The responses should be
 no response - IP address
IP Address appears to be clean
IP address seems to be infected by Conficker

 Good Luck

I need to let everyone know that there has been a major explode of
Moodle.
A lot of sites have been compromised and admins are scrambling to fix.
As
near as I can tell the easiest way to correct is a complete site reload,
so
it is possible that you will see issues with any Moodle server you visit
or
use the next few weeks.

This particular exploit has even the moodle experts are baffled.

Mitch, there are (expensive) broad-based testing applications and
hardware, and there are specific applications (less-expensive, and some

[info-tech] Schools soon required to teach web safety

2008-10-16 Thread Stanzel, Matt

Schools soon required to teach web safety

Schools receiving e-Rate discounts on their telecommunications services
and internet access soon will have to educate their students about
online safety, sexual predators, and cyber bullying, thanks to federal
legislation passed in both the Senate and the House.

The Broadband Data Improvement Act (S.1492), sponsored by Senate
Commerce Committee Chairman Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, requires the
Federal Trade Commission to carry out a national public awareness
program focused on educating children how to use the internet in safe
and responsible ways. The legislation also establishes an Online Safety
and Technology Working Group charged with evaluating online safety
education efforts, parental control technologies, filtering and blocking
software, and more.

I burn a PST file (which gives me a great searching tool) to DVD every

as long as I archive to DVD, otherwise, there is about 5GB of

[info-tech] Password Policies and Substitute Teachers

2008-09-10 Thread Stanzel, Matt
At Sheldon School, like every school, our policies state that you may
not give your password to ANYONE. However, when a sub needs to come in
for a teacher, previously, that sub has been given the password for the
teacher to use. However, this of course violates the policies, and
because that sub would be able to access the email for that teacher,
they are not comfortable with this.

The options that I have come up with, including creating a special drop
folder accessible by subs where teachers could drop their assignments
only work if the teacher knows in advance that they will be gone.

How do other districts handle these situations?

Thanks,

Matt Stanzel

Mitch, likely that means that the AD location
(CN=username,OU=x,OU=x,DC=local,DC=emmetsburg,DC=k12,DC=ia,DC=us) is
incorrect. If you have your students in different OUs (say, by the year
of graduation), then you will have to change the UserDN accordingly.
Another possible reason for that error might be that you are pointing to
an object (like a computer or group) that does not support 'dsmod user'.

Ok. Well I must be doing something wrong because I keep getting Target
object for this command' has incorrect format.

Mitch, the EXCEL concatenate script that Chad sent will do exactly what
you want. Once you have the result column, you simply copy/paste the
outputted values to a batch file and run that.

But how would I do that without having to select each individual user
and clicking reset password.

Still looking for some help on a batch file or a vbs file to help me
reset passwords for all the students. Just looking for anything little
thing that could help me a little bit more.

Thanks

Mitch,

That is the 'formula' (except I forgot the first 2, and most important
words: dsmod user) it is just a long string really with the pertinent
information from the other columns put in there (such as username and
password). I will attach a spreadsheet with an expample.

Ok I kind of have this figured out. I need a little more help though.
In the F column I don't really understand it much. What do you use as
the formula.

I actually use a spread sheet to generate the bat file for everyone.A1 =
first name, B1 = last name, C1 = year of graduation, D1 = RIGHT(C1:2)
LEFT(A1:2) (LEFT(B1:4), E1 = whatever the password you want is. I
generate mine randomly. F1 = CN= D1 ,OU=2010,OU=HS
Students,OU=Students,DC=local,DC=okoboji,DC=k12,DC=ia,DC=us -pwd E1
  -canchpwd no -pwdneverexpires yes

Then I select column F and copy and paste into a bat file. It should be
pretty easy for you to modify for your uses.

I use a similar method to create all the new users for the year.

I'm just looking to reset all the passwords of the students in the
system all at once. I would like to be able to just reset them to their
first name or username. I think I could take this one and rewrite it a
little bit but any other help would be appreciated.

Do you mean one at a time or groups of people? If you mean groups of
people, you can just write a .bat file like this. One line for each
user. There are more options but these are the ones I use.

Dsmod user CN=10AlKreb,OU=2010,OU=HS
Students,OU=Students,DC=local,DC=okoboji,DC=k12,DC=ia,DC=us -pwd
 -canchpwd no -pwdneverexpires yes

This is what I do every year for new student passwords.
