re: [info-tech] Skype

2010-11-12 Thread Tim Limbert
We use Skype quite a bit here, and have seen no major problems (technical
ones, anyway). We've never really had any trouble with Skype traffic
getting through, and I'm not sure why, really, because I don't feel like
I've done anything special to make it work. Our firewall setup is simple,
and our content filters are fairly open.

Quick question:

Who uses Skype, and do you have any issues getting the traffic past your
content filter? Our content filter stops it as P2P traffic (which it
really is...). I could get past that if I could use a specific port, but
Skype is all over the place on ports, and you can only set a static inbound
port, not outbound. I am working with the vendor (Deep Nines), but I am
curious what others are doing.

Google Talk anyone?

I would sure appreciate any responses to the following
questions regarding student passwords when you get a chance

1.
What is your procedure when a student forgets their
logon password? Who handles this request?

2.
Do you maintain a list of student passwords, and if so,
who do you share that list with?

3.
How often do you change student passwords?

I am just curious what other districts are doing regarding
this problem. It's not a big deal at this point in the game, but it seems
to be an issue during the first few weeks of school and of course that is when
we are bombarded by a million other things.

re: [info-tech] AUP Violations

2010-09-15 Thread Tim Limbert
That's a tough one, and your last sentence is really the key. Taking the
computer away, or removing internet access, means you've got a kid not
functioning at all. So, you trade one problem for another. I think you
definitely have to choose your battles. I know you were just giving a
hypothetical, but do you really want to fight a battle over a kid typing
something nasty on his computer when you happened to be looking? I might take
a "no blood, no foul" approach there. Now, if he were using school email to
send that sentiment to other students, that might be a very different story. I
think we're definitely having to re-evaluate what we consider
acceptable/unacceptable behavior in a 1:1 environment. Do we have rules that
are essentially unenforceable? Are we creating unwinnable battles? Are we
driving our students to find sneaky ways to "express" themselves?
When I, as the tech coordinator, see something that concerns me while
monitoring student laptops, I have to ask myself whether what I'm seeing
qualifies as harmful, or merely irritating. Most of the time, it's the latter.
I might grab a screenshot, and pass it on to the teacher or principal, and let
them handle it as they see fit. I also try to constantly remind students of
their lack of an expectation of privacy, and I try to do it in a positive way
(pop up a chat window, and say, "Hey, Bobby, it looks like you're having some
trouble with xxx. Do you need some help?"
And we educators have to constantly remind ourselves of the challenges that a
1:1 environment poses in terms of classroom management, curriculum and
instruction. Engagement, rigor and relevance all become much more urgently
necessary in a 1:1 environment. We have to engage the students, provide a
relevant curriculum, and instruct in a way that makes it impossible for them to
be successful if they're not on task. This has never been possible for every
single student, and it probably never will, laptops or no. But that's our
challenge, and the success of 1:1 learning depends on how well we meet this
challenge.

Just curious what other districts are doing for students who
violate AUP's. Do you have a 1st Violation, 2nd
Violation, 3rd Violation set of consequences as a minumum
punsihment? Or is it "punishment fits the crime" and is unique in
every case? This is especially tough for us 1:1 schools and I would like to
hear how you are handling these incidences.

For instance, we have high school kids who know they are
being monitored, but still decide to type "F*** this school" in a Google
search. I would like to kick the kid off the internet for a while for something
like that. But in a school system that is so integrated with technology, it is
tough to enforce the rules and make teachers have to provide alternate plans
for student who cannot access technology.

Thoughts.

Good evening-

We have used Vision (originally from Altiris, most recently from Geneva
Logic) in our computer labs to demo out to the screens of the rest of the
lab. It also allows the teacher to monitor all of the lab computers from
the teacher computers. We always seem to have issues with them, and are
looking for what people are using on their Windows machines. We use a
couple of Faronics products, so I am looking into their Insight product,
but looking for suggestions of other products as well.

Also, if you have used a product, and it hasn't performed, that would
help us too. Again, this is a Windows environment.

Thanks, and get to sleep!!!

[info-tech] barcode wand

2010-05-14 Thread Tim Limbert
Can anyone recommend and good (and preferably cheap) barcode scanning wand
(the type you use like a pen, and actually drag across the barcode)?

(forgot to try that, D'oh)
It does work when logged in as another domain user (not necessarily the
domain admin). Which means, it's something in that user's local profile?
Should I log in as local admin, trash local profile, log in as user to
create new profile? I'd back up documents from their profile first.

I agree about the language, not so much about the unsolicited opinions. If
Kurt had what he considered to be an educated opinion about a potential
educational device (and one that we've been discussing quite a bit), I
don't think it's unreasonable to "review" it. I disagree with some of his

Am I off-base about that? I honestly ask, because if I had an iPad in my

Your precious Slate might be DBA (Dead Before Arrival). In your
"review" of this product did you download and use the Pages, Keynote,
or Numbers, all productivity tools? Also, it is no big secret that
you are an unabashed Apple hater so how may I ask were you objective?
Is the iPad (or any other product) perfect, heck no. Comparing a
product IN YOUR HAND to a product THAT DOES NOT EXIST is a pointless
argument. Can you do that same things on an iPad you can do on a
laptop, no. The iPad is a MOBILE device and NOT a computer. Can your
Blackberry edit videos, upload to google docs, read books to you, edit
pictures in photshop, or run Windows 7 NO it is a freakin mobile device.

Next issue, did you even look at the tools available to deploy and
control the administrative side of an iPad? The Wifi iPad goes
through the same filters as all my computers when it is here on
campus. Why is it so bad that a kid might spend some time looking at
YouTube videos? (Different Diatribe for a different day)

Now on to the next issue. It is not our job to decide what should and
shouldn't be used in education, it is our job to listen to what is
needed and make it happen. Even if the request is technically
difficult or even requires a change in firewall policies. We are here
to support education and the staff that has been hired to educate. We
are not the gate keepers saying what can or will be done. I suggest,
discuss, and implore but ultimately it is not my say. I want to
unblock Facebook but my board says no, so I have to listen.

Last bit, this is an archived and posted on the internet listserv so
your comment about the "retarded" kids will now go down in all
Internet history, which as an educator first I am embarrassed for
you. As IT professionals in education we need to function in a
different manner and work within a different rule set than our
counterparts at Aviva or Wells Fargo.

Since God has a sense of humor, I am now responsible for an iPad (on
order will be here any day) and an iTouch (can't actually touch it
because the principal has it at home.

I have been asked to find apps for the elementary principal, and likely
the High School, and Middle School principals, and the Superintendent to
make these paperweights into productive devices.

Ok, let's be honest, we are not going to log into the domain. We are not
going to print no matter how much they demand the ability to do so. But
is anyone using the Ipad or Itouch, and if so what apps work for you?

Perhaps VNC does that all now, but I am unaware of that.

I don't have a touch, so I may be missing this app. What I did not see were
applications for Word Processing, spread sheets, and presentations.
Although with the web access I suspect that can be accomplished with Google
Docs (Not that it is a real great replacement). This may also be a reason
to make sure you get "Digital Rights" when (ok IF) you purchase new
textbooks. With 10 hour of battery life, solid state drive, I could see
that it has some potential.

Jason and I have been discussing an education device at the time the Kindles
came out. What the iPAD offers hits most of our discussion points.

Although I am still waiting for the iCAR version that would replace my car
radio/GPS.

hypothetical
situations.

1. A teacher has been employed by
the state outside of their regular school contract to develop curriculum
for the

curriculum,
and asks for technical support from the school district's IT personel

2. A teacher is working on their

issue.

Things to
remember:

I charge $60-$80 an hour for
outside-my-contract technical support.

The distrcit does not allow me to
work on my outside-contract-hours jobs while here at
work.

I do not use school-owned equipment
to complete any of these outside-contract-hours jobs.

The issues encountered were not
'quick fixes' or simple advice.

Some of our tech team thinks we
should create some sort of policy to regulate such situations, others do
not. We
would like to see what other districts are doing in similar situations if
anything.

The distrcit does not allow me to work on my
outside-contract-hours jobs while here at work.

I do not use school-owned equipment to complete any of these
outside-contract-hours jobs.

The issues encountered were not 'quick fixes' or simple
advice.

Some of our tech team thinks we should create some sort of
policy to regulate such situations, others do not. We would like to see what
other districts are doing in similar situations if anything.

Thanks,

Yeah, we put quite a bit on the web page, teachers are putting more and
more on blogs, and parents and students can access a lot of information
through JMC Parent Access, so I don't think we're emailing much out.

Do
all schools send out massive amounts of bulk email? Our district sends out
as
much junk mail as a spammer does. Is there a better solution. 2 -3
secretaries at a time will be bulk mailing to hundreds of parents at a time
and
wondering why there are delays in mail delivery to these people.

They
send out things like daily assignment, newsletters, lunch balances, etc..
What does everyone else do with these? Post them on a website maybe?

The second one, I believe, is Voice Over. Go into System Preferences, then
Universal Access, then turn off Voice Over. Kids will sometimes
accidentally hit the key combo to turn that on. Why it makes the duplicate
menu entries is beyond me, but it does.

1) In Word -- how do you fix the Formatting Palette from

2) For the Mac users: what settings get changed when 2 of
everything shows up in the blue apple menu? Also--everything becomes

Subject: [info-tech] Mail Server Update

Mail should be working correctly again. It just finished processing 26,000
email messages.

If you want the technical details:

The default for the "Declude" spam processor is to use up to 15 threads to
process incoming email messages. This was to ensure that lower end servers
would not crash with using too many resources. Per recommendations of
Declude this setting has been upgraded to 250 threads, or allowing the
server to process 250 messages at a time. With this setting the mail server
was able to process 26,000 emails in less than 45 Minutes.

I am not sure exactly what started the processing latency, it could be the
service window on Monday, or it could just be that the mail load increased
on the server with the start of school. Regardless of what was the initial
cause, I am confident this issue has been rectified.

If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me.
