Upgrade went well, and we don't seem to have any issues. Take good
notes on everything under Properties - Content Filter - Authentication
Settings and Properties - Content Filter - Properties. Those settings
seem to be set back to default.

As always, make sure you perform their backup procedures, as I have had
to go back and use that a couple of times. Had I not done that, life
would have been bad!!!

If a student violated the AUP and have either their Internet

For those of you that kick kids off the Internet for violating your AUP,
what do you do for school related access for projects, research, etc?
We use LightSpeed for content filtering which will block their access,
but we still want a way to let them on in a very monitored environment.
Any suggestions? Right now, we have a few computers in our library with
static IP addresses and then a policy applied to those IP addresses, and
that works, but didn't know if there was a better way to do it.

Okoboji revokes their privileges for the regular school day 8am - 3pm.
So, they can come in before or after school to complete computer related
work. We also have certain circumstances where a student needs access
just for a certain time during the day. For instance they are taking a
computer apps class. I utilize the Logon Hours in Active Directory to
accomplish both things. It isn't perfect (i.e. it only lets you do it on
the hour), but it works ok.

If I violate the states DUI rules, they do not care if I need my car
to go to work. Why is computer access any different. They may need to
find alternate ways of getting assignments done, like at home, the
local library, a friends house. There may be exceptions, but those
are made on a case by case basis. No different than the courts
allowing a DUI violator to have a work permit.

Hi,

ITEC'09 and he asked about a Lightspeed Certification training in Iowa.
Would anyone be interested in attending the 5 day training in mid-June
in Jefferson if we could pull this together? The cost is between
$600-800 per person for the week which includes hands on training with
our mobile TTC Laptops, manual, certification exams, and lunch the first
four days.

More course details here:

Let me know- We need 10 people to proceed. Thanks!

2009-05-15 Thread Rowedder, Craig
The East Greene and Jefferson-Scranton Districts both use the product and
purchase it through Heartland Technology out of Ames as well. We're also going
to use the Power Manager feature that they have come out with.

I was wondering if any other schools running lightspeed have seen an issue with
the state IEP system not allowing users to login to the site. If so how did
you correct this issue?

We use Lightspeed, but haven't had an issue. Are they getting a blocked

You might have that problem if you are using the block unknown URL or
non-http options. Nobody here has told me of problems with the iep site,
but we have had issues with some of the other state sites. You should be
able to check either the block log or lookup the site or ip address in

After setting the logon user for the 3 services, did you restart those
services?

Do you have the settings correct for the other two sections of that
article?

Sounds like you need to divide and conquer.

First, figure out all problems on the inside of your network that
pertain to LightSpeed, ie users not showing up on reports, sites not
being blocked.

Second, figure out the problems with a single machine and using
LightSpeed Guide, ie sites not being blocked, connection to the server
from an outside address (firewall rules), getting updates while off the
school network

Third, tackle the terminal services issue.

Have you tried LightSpeed support? They are usually pretty helpful in
assisting with setup/functionality issues.

Do you have the TTC Identification service running as a domain admin?
How about the IP Magic services?

The machines that you want to report on must have either the User Agent

Yesterday I attended an online seminar showing how lightspeeds
new plugin for streaming video works.

It was very cool and efficient.

Who out there is using lightspeed for virus protection and

How about a user group - even a virtual one, that can help with
hammering out policies and such?

Thanks,

RE: [info-tech] Lightspeed

2009-01-29 Thread Koenck, Chris
We use Lightspeed for Content Filtering, Anti-virus, and Spam Filtering.
We had some user identification issues early in the implementation, but
everything has been great since. The problem was a mismatch of Security
Agent Versions. Once everything was running 7.0 and up, we were good.

Terminal Service users need LS Guide to resolve usernames. It is on the
LightSpeed Wiki. We haven't had any virus issues...but we are locked
down pretty tight. We even force Google as the search engine choice, all
others are blocked, which forces safe search.

I even have one Mac and he has the Mac User Agent installed which allows
reporting to be done on his traffic. I haven't upgraded to 7.02 yet, but
plan to do so shortly.

RE: [info-tech] Lightspeed

2009-01-29 Thread Frerichs, Chad
Okoboji is considering Lightspeed, but the anti virus is our main
concern right now. We would be replacing Trend Micro to make it cost
effective. I was not yet convinced their antivirus could do as good of a
job and after today's thread I am really not convinced. Does
Lightspeed's anti-virus do a good job? We are also pretty well locked
down, but...

2009-01-29 Thread JON HUESER
We found out the other day that lightspeed is now doing the safe search on
moderate instead of strict safe search so keep that in mind. According to one
of the big wigs at lightspeed (heaven knows we have talked to them almost daily
now for a month), the tech people are asking them to put it back to strict or
allow us the choice.

I will explain our problem. A teacher brought the school laptop back after
break and used it on his home network which was having problems at the time
(Yes we tell them not to but usually the agent is updated). He then put it on
our network and it caused problems. It was knocking down our internet. I
finally found the msddlle.exe running and found out the new version of a virus
came out around Dec 28 and guess who had it, YES we did! We have been fighting
it ever since. I believe that it stops the security agent from running active
threat, because we can run a scan and it finds the virus but it still allows
that virus to reload and other viruses to reload. I am no tech support from
lightspeed (probably craig and I could be by now) but we have told them what we
think it is doing.

Since I haven't been very pleasant with the lightspeed people the past week,
they are now taking a more active look at our problem and hopefully they have
it solved today. The funny thing was, we could look in the unknown programs
file while lightspeed was running and Craig and I are able to point at other
versions of the virus but lightspeed wasn't seeing them and of course you can't
delete anything out of unknown programs thru the security agent. Cross your
fingers and my true readhead temper is showing with the company. Craig and I
have made a few suggestions on how to improve the product, Craigs were nicer
than my suggestions and I hope they use his over mine!

Now you know why I have had to hold back and hope you guys don't get what we
have.

msddll.exe (2 d's) and msisrv.exe are our main culprits. sysmgr.exe too. But
they'll produce multiple 2 letter .exe's as well that just sit out on the root
level of C:\. Example: at.exe, fc.exe. etc. But the majority are found in the
system32 and system directories. LightSpeed will scan them, call them Unknown
and let them be. Supposedly, we'll have that fixed today...

Now you know why I have had to hold back and hope you guys don't get what we
have.

BTW: What is a mac???

2009-01-29 Thread JON HUESER
For the past two years we never had one problem with the anti-virus portion of
lightspeed. Last summer we did the update to the firewall part of the product
and updated most of the internal to the new agent. Since then we have had
nothing but problems. Craig and I have always been under the assumption this
year that we have something corrupt in the database to not make it work
correct. They have been very good working with us earlier this year with our
issues and we thought we had it fixed until January 5th came around.

To be honest about them, we know the CEO is aware of our issue and I feel he is
probably putting a lot of heat on his people to get us fixed (don't want bad
publicity in the economic time) and we have been dealing with their top people.
They did not know anything about this virus until we got them netmeeting into
our network to see the problem. The problem I have is that we are paying them
to keep this out and to help us stop it and we have been fighting it daily for
a month. That is completely unacceptable. They wouldn't allow somebody like
Principal or Wells Fargo sit that long, they shouldn't do that to us.

Hopefully with the CEO's involvment we will get this solved and continue our
formerly good relationship with Lightspeed.

BTW: Did you guys actually know I am MAC support in our district - or course
the one MAC I have is unplugged and sitting in a corner!

Nothing major from our end here, and everything has been pretty smooth.
We have had a few issues with the authentication web page and Macintosh
and Linux web browsers. But, we might be the only person forcing people
to authenticate before allowing them out. That would be my only issue.

Let us know how the journaling goes for you.

Anyone had issues with the upgrade or problems after the upgrade?
