[Inkscape-translator] inkscape.pot missing vital entries

Hello,

When I run 'make inkscape_pot' for current git master, I get this:

[100%] Generating ../../po/inkscape.pot
Unsuccessful open on filename containing newline at
/usr/bin/intltool-update line 1150.

And then the following top menu items are missing from POT (become obsolete):

_View, _Layer, _Object, _Path, _Filters, _Extensions, _Help.

Both _File, _Edit, and _Text are OK.

I'd gladly push updated ru.po, but without these essential bits it's
not worth it really.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Not exactly official, but originally written by some of the project's
contributors.

months of changes in source code:

Victor,

Gettext tools already do that whenever you run intlttool-update
'LANG'. They look for similar messages in English, insert their
translations, and then mark such entries as fuzzy.

However in my experience (15 years, for what it's worth) there's
little help in all that. You do get occasional help from TM, but
mostly you have to heavily edit the outcome. Not worth the bother.

The question is whether there will be a way to track and review
changes made by completely arbitrary people who try to be helpful or
just feeling like messing with translation out of boredom, but have no
clue whatsoever about what they are doing. Another question is how
much time this review would consume.

What do you mean, removed? As far as I can tell from INX code, those
should be translatable.

On a second thought, it would be unfair if one person blocked the

There are lots of projects that use Rosetta and Transifex. Some even
use crowdin.net.

My experience with those tools is extremely negative. They only work
when you have an established community around the translation, so a
peer review works as expected. And you cannot get people organized if
they don't want to.

When you are just a single translator, you suddenly realize you have
to watch the translation to make sure no clever kid ruins your work,
because he thinks he knows better. Over the last year I lost maybe a
day of my life (literally -- 24h) just to fix all the crap that some
such clever kids did to FreeCAD's translation.

It's a matter of responsibility. If Inkscape ever moves to an online
translation tool, I will stop translating it and I will switch to
English locale to avoid seeing what some people do to my translation.
I don't want my name under a crappy work that I didn't do, and I don't
have the time to keep track of all the changes, because my experience
tells me: it's going to eat as much of my time as it can grab. Call it
an overreaction if you like.

As a matter of fact things could be improved even for 0.48, if the
translator concentrated on most visible things like menu items and
tooltips for tools and toll options toolbar items first. I wouldn't
recommend spend a lot of time on SVG filter names for 0.48 though --
they are the mist difficult part, IMHO.

If (s)he gets most visible things right, this will be a lot better
than translation of arbitrary messages, some of them mostly not seen
by users.

Whoever updates POTFILES.in using ./generate_POTFILES.sh please stop
doing this. You are not doing everyone a favour. We moved a number of
messages that translators should not see while working on 0.47
translation to POTFILES.ignore, because some features will be missing
in this release. I'll restore the previous version immediately. Then
someone else will have to recreate inkscape.pot using 'make
inkscape.pot' in po directory after successful compilation, because
Inkscape doesn't compile on this box for me.

There are two ways to do it:

1. Easiest - just fix tooltips directly.
2. More difficult - fetch them automagically the way it is done in

This is most likely offtopic, but are you planning any changes to the
way swatches dialog (Ctrl+Shift+W)looks? Currently it always displays
horizontal scrollbar (while it shouldn't) and swatches are always
rectangular, not square, and they do not reflow when width is changed.

Do media/art/etc. box translations show up for anyone else in GUI.
Here for me they don't, though translation are actually present.

And does Normal contextual separation work for anyone else?

 We are not yet in the string freeze though if I am right. Hence some
 changes should be all right. I can volunteer to make the necessary

I've been using Rosetta for 1-1,5 year(s), mostly for projects whose
lead developers want translations to be done via Rosetta (like PDF
Split And Merge). Last year there was a huge issue with Scribus
translations being imported to Rosetta silently and people getting
involved into translation without letting original translators know.

As for Russian community of Rosetta translators, we have managed to
convince them to cooperate with two most significant existing
translators teams - KDE Russian and GNOME Cyrillic (I'm member of
both) - and I haven't heard about issues since then (there were some
more before). I don't know how other Ubuntu language teams handle this
situation.

For Rosetta there is an internal rule -- importing a translation to
Rosetta can be done from permission of developers/translators only.

If you are interested in usability side of Rosetta, it's quite okay,
though I don't remember how it handles plural forms. What is not quite
okay with Rosetta is that it allows translation without actually
looking at GUI, which is very, *very* bad, especially when some
translators are known to translate GUI this way and be happy with it.

Generally speaking, Rosetta more or less solves a long standing issue
with consistent translation of GUI, showing variants of translation in
its web interface, but allows clueless (sorry, if that sounds harsh)
people contribute -- and this is unavoidable so far.

(not much left to do, really).
