Wrong earth man, in some cases where there is a compile all deal going on
then the key stroke you suggest is correct. I believe Skype is the only case
that comes to mind. Other than that Mr. Mike is quite correct for a standard

Re: [JAWS-Users] laptops and OS

2010-03-29 Thread Steve
Yes, a 64-bit computer can most often run 32-bit software. Where you run
into the problem is you may have an older scanner or printer which won't
work in the 64-bit computer, so you need to check the manufacturer's site to
make sure you can download a 64-bit driver.

Also, if you consider a 64-bit Vista machine, you will need to update Jaws
to verswion 10 as that is the first version which supports 64-bit operating
systems.

As for not supporting Office 2003, that may be true. But, depending on your
needs, that might be largely irrelevant. There are still a helluva lot of
people out there using Office 2000 and even some using Office 97 software.

Thank you all for your very hehlpful replies re a laptop and Windows 7.
I'll

know later this week what the school uses, and that will determine what I
will look for. One reason why I think I have to give up my much-loved
Word-2003 is that Microsoft has or is soon stopping support for it as they
move forward. I don't want to be a dinosaur. .

So, what about 64-bit versus 32-bit? I know Jaws now supports 64-bit. Can
a

64-bit PC or laptop run 32-bit software, or is that how it works? Not sure
about that stuff either.

Jean,

Well, first, any laptop will work. It's a good idea to consider several
things when looking for a laptop. Since keyboard layouts vary in terms of
where certain less-used keys like backslash, the applications key, insert,
end, pgup and pgdn, if they are present are located, it is good if you
look
at a model you are considering buying first. You can always shop for it
on

the internet if you are comfortable with its keyboard layout. If you are
considering a netbook, which is an underpowered laptop, there are a couple
that don't have dedicated function keys.

Second, consider the size of the laptop display. Those with 13 inch
displays are lighter to carry around. Those with 17-inch displays often
have a full keyboard including separate numpad.

Third, if you look around on the internet, you can find laptops with Vista
or probably even XP Professional. But, if your choice is between Vista
and
Windows 7, go with Win 7. It is more efficient, more responsive, and just
a

better operating system than Vista.

Fourth, MsOffice 2003 will work with Windows 7 computers. You don't have
to

upgrade to Office 2007 unless the school requires it.

Hello all,

I don't have time to read many messages, so apologize if this has been
covered or is of common knowledge.

I am in the market for a laptop computer. I've never owned a laptop and
don't know what to look for or avoid as a blind user. I will have to
upgrade Jaws as I'm back on version 8. I'm thinking that most laptops now
are sold with Windows 2007 operating system. How does Jaws work with
that?

Of course, it would be whatever current version Jaws is at, version 11 I
think. Also, I would then have to make the leap to Office 2007 from
Office

2003. I may have to use Office 2007 including PowerPoint, Excel, IE, and
Word in school next fall. I'll know that for sure later this week, but I
would expect that they will not be using my favourite 2003 stuff.

Anyway, any pointers on upgrading would be appreciated.

Thanks.

[JAWS-Users] internet explorer showing blank pages when using jaws

2010-03-29 Thread Joanne
I'm using Jaws 10 and 11 with XP Home, and it seems that either of these 2 Jaws
versions has not been working when using I.E. 8. What I wish I could do is get
rid of the stuff on the left side of the page--that Web address and home split
button you see. Because that actually seems to be where the problem lies--plus
it is annoying because you can't just go to links like you could in I.E. 6.
What seems to happen is, it tells you you're on the right page, but going past
that home split thing it shows nothing. I sometimes see links if I turn off
and on the virtual cursor, or if I hit F5 to refresh. But often I can't get
the links and text bodies of the pages to show up. I know it went to the right
page but something is either blocking it or something is maybe set wrong in
config. Now the odd thing is, usually when using my special version of Jaws 8
this doesn't happen; however I can't use Jaws 8 to find a favorite because
hitting alt and the letter a it doesn't read the list of favorites. So if
anyone can help resolve these issues would appreciate it.

Also does F.S. recommend anything regarding tool bars? Should they be locked,
and which ones would one use when browsing with Jaws? I just wondered if that
had any difference in my not getting links to come up.

Thanks.

[JAWS-Users] RE Laptops and OS

2010-03-29 Thread First CRC Tom Vos
Let me just assure you that Office 2007 is a good upgrade.
It has a learning curve because MS has switched to ribbon menus rather
than the pull down menus, but give yourself a little time to explore, and
you will find this system works well, and JAWS works well with it.
Blessings,

Subject: [JAWS-Users] internet explorer showing blank pages when
using
   jaws

I'm using Jaws 10 and 11 with XP Home, and it seems that either of
 these
   2
Jaws versions has not been working when using I.E. 8. What I wish
I
 could
do is get rid of the stuff on the left side of the page--that Web
 address
and home split button you see. Because that actually seems to be
where
   the
problem lies--plus it is annoying because you can't just go to
links
 like
you could in I.E. 6. What seems to happen is, it tells you you're
on
 the
right page, but going past that home split thing it shows nothing.
I
sometimes see links if I turn off and on the virtual cursor, or if
I
 hit
   F5
to refresh. But often I can't get the links and text bodies of the
 pages
   to
show up. I know it went to the right page but something is either
   blocking
it or something is maybe set wrong in config. Now the odd thing
is,
   usually
   when using my special version of Jaws 8 this doesn't happen;
however I
   can't
use Jaws 8 to find a favorite because hitting alt and the letter a
it
doesn't read the list of favorites. So if anyone can help resolve
 these
   issues would appreciate it.

Also does F.S. recommend anything regarding tool bars? Should
they be
locked, and which ones would one use when browsing with Jaws? I
just
wondered if that had any difference in my not getting links to come
up.

Thanks.

Below are 2 ways. The first is permanet until your computer changes it on

#1.
You need to open a message first and then press alt plus v for the view

hmmm, easier than that, start composing a new message and press alt+b

Hi there.

I need to add to the list of folks having this issue with windows XP, JAWS
10X and IE 8.

I've tried refreshing the screen and using the insert+escape command to
refresh the virtual buffer, but neither of these does the trick.

The only thing that seems to work consistently for me is to toggle the
virtual cursor off and then on again with insert+Z. I have know clue why
this is, because it will happen on some sites and not others and not
regularly enough for me to reproduce whenever I have access to a willing
pair of eyeballs. grin

Actually, the JAWS help does a good job at this. While in the dialog for
personalizing web sites, you can tab back and forth from the tree view to a
read only field that describes the function of each item and what the
various options do.

This isn't like the Windows Help system, so no F6 is necessary, just tab and
shift tab should get you what you want.

 Thanks.

A hanging indent is where the beginning of a paragraph starts near the

Highlight the paragraph involved and go to formatting ALT-O, down arrow once

A hanging indent is where the beginning of a paragraph starts near the
margin and following lines are indented. It is one of the Word styles.
Highlight the paragraph involved and go to formatting ALT-O, down arrow
once to paragraph and whack enter then remove formatting I think it is
called.

Re: [JAWS-Users] RE Laptops and OS

2010-03-29 Thread Jean Menzies
Thanks, Tom, for the vote of confidence. I do have the National Braille
Press books on using JAWS with the Office 2007 programs, and I will
definitely be using them.

Let me just assure you that Office 2007 is a good upgrade.
It has a learning curve because MS has switched to ribbon menus rather
than the pull down menus, but give yourself a little time to explore, and
you will find this system works well, and JAWS works well with it.
Blessings,
Tom

 Hello all,

I don't have time to read many messages, so apologize if this has
been covered or is of common knowledge.

I am in the market for a laptop computer. I've never owned a laptop
and don't know what to look for or avoid as a blind user. I will
have to upgrade Jaws as I'm back on version 8. I'm thinking that most
laptops now are sold with Windows 2007 operating system. How does
Jaws work with that? Of course, it would be whatever current version
Jaws is at, version 11 I think. Also, I would then have to make the
leap to Office 2007 from Office 2003. I may have to use Office 2007
including PowerPoint, Excel, IE, and Word in school next fall. I'll
know that for sure later this week, but I would expect that they
will not be using my favourite 2003 stuff.

Anyway, any pointers on upgrading would be appreciated.

 Thanks.

 Jean

[JAWS-Users] PowerPoint

2010-03-29 Thread Jean Menzies
Just wondering if it is possible for a totally blind person using Jaws to
create a PowerPoint presentation? I know we can read the text on slides, but
what about the creation? For my courses next fall, one class is on computer
basics, and PowerPoint is one of the programs. Word and Excel won't be much of
a problem, but I'm wondering about PowerPoint. I've never worked with it
before. Again, not sure which version the school will be using yet.

Re: [JAWS-Users] question about MS word 2003, and hanging indent?

2010-03-29 Thread Melissa Riley
A hanging indent is a special paragraph style, typically used in citations
and such, where the first line of the paragraph is flush with the left
margin, and subsequent lines are indented approximately 5 spaces.
Essentially, it's the opposite of a typical indented paragraph.
If you go to your paragraph settings dialogue box, tab through till you here
special, there is a selection there of several styles, including hanging.
Yes, control Z is undo.

Re: [JAWS-Users] PowerPoint

Both of the versions, 03, and 07 are accessible. You can start playing with
it prior to your class, as I've rarely had a class where an instructor
didn't require a presentation of some sort, and I'm a month shy of my AA.
It is also possible to create your text within Word, and paste it into the
slides.
