Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 11 going silent in Outlook

2010-04-03 Thread Annette Carr
I'm wondering if operating system has anything to do with this JAWS hanging
up problem. At work there are 2 of us having this problem and we are both
using Windows XP. I have a friend who is using Windows 7 and he does not
have the problem on either his desktop nor laptop.

I am having similar issues with JAWS 11 and Outlook 2007. You could smoke a
cigarette while you wait for a message to open. And, after a while, even
though JAWS is set to automatically read messages when opened, it will just
stop doing it, and you then need to close, and restart JAWS.

I've had the same problem with Both JAWS 10 and 11 in both Office 2003
2007. However the problem is much worse in 2007 with JAWS 11. I have found
that I have to do a complete shut down, and not a restart to fix the problem
for a while. I only have this problem at work using the above stated
combinations of JAWS and Office, and not at home using JAWS 11 Office
2003.

At work I am also having problems where JAWS 11 is taking a very long time
to start reading an e-mail message in 2007 that I have just opened, and when
I press Enter in the body of a message while I am composing it. I've not
found a fix for this besides just waiting it out. Sometimes it appears that
after waiting for a while, the only way to get JAWS to say anything is to
press the up and down arrows. It does not make sense to me.

For reasons I cannot detect, and on no pattern I can see, JAWS 11
occasionally goes completely silent when I open certain emails in Outlook.
If I use the JAWS pointer, I can see there is material there and read it
that way, but the virtual cursor does not work, and the arrow keys do
nothing. Total lack of any feed back at all. Restarting JAWS doesn't fix
it. Rebooting the computer will fix it until next time. JAWS 9 does not do
this. In fact, if I don't feel like going through a reboot, I just turn off
JAWS 11 and launch JAWS 9 and it will read the email just fine. I have made
sure that the settings for JAWS 9 have been ported to JAWS 11. I have heard
at least two other people express this problem, but none of us has solved.
it.

I checked the JAWS support pages and they mention that undocked tool bars,
or large font sizes can cause this effect. However, I do not have undocked
toolbars, and when I adjust the font size it doesn't seem to make any
difference.

Any ideas?
Bill

Try opening it by first turning forms mode on and then using Alt plus down
arrow. You should hear something about the combo box being open. Now arrow
down to the choice you want. If it's the type of combo box I'm thinking of,
you can just press tab to move away from that box and it should open the
page with whatever choice you selected.

This doesn't always work. Like RJ, I notice that when you open some combo
boxes and press Alt-down arrow, the first item is immediately selected and
you are taken out of forms mode before you have a chance to arrow down to
the item you actually want. I haven't figured out a way around this glitch
myself, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi,

I am currently using the latest Jaws 11 on an XP home OS system.

I will be purchasing a new laptop shortly with Windows 7 64 bit
system. I have several question for now.

Can I legally use Jaws on two computers without purchasing another
license? Or is my copy of Jaws okay to use on more than one computer?
I don't know if the license will allow me to do that.

Also, if it is allowable to use Jaws on more than one computer and
since I have the original DVD of Jaws 11 which does not have the
latest updates, how do I get the authorization I need so that I will
not be in the demo mode? I figure that I can download the latest
version from FS with 64 bits, but do I need to install Jaws from my DVD
first?

If I need to purchase an additional license, how much does it cost?

I am sorry for so many questions, but this is the first time for me
since I first started using Jaws on one computer. I hope that I made
sense with my questions.

Any help will greatly be appreciated.

Lennie,

As I understand it, you can use Jaws on more than one computer, but not
simultaneously.

2. When you get the 64-bit computer, you can put your DVD in as Version 11
will automatically detect whether you have a 32-bit or 64-bit system. Once
it installs Jaws, go and do the update for the latest version first.

With Javascrips comboboxes, if entering on your selection it will load into

Re: [JAWS-Users] Combo boxes

2010-04-03 Thread Steve
Yes, probably. One of the places you can encounter them is at the FedEx.com
website. If you delete your cookie for Fedex, the one that remembers your
current location, you will be broght to their main homepage.

At this point, you are presented with a combobox to choose a location. When
you try to open the box, it immediately jumps to the first option and places
you in the Afghanistan locale. I didn't discover this until a few days
later, after wondering why my tracking number kept coming up with no
results.

I think I had to go into their sitemap to find reference to an accessible
page, which treated the combobox in a customary manner.

There is another site that I use a lot when I speak about web accessibility.
Mr. Damry is aware of this site. If you go to the Cisco Linksys website and
attempt to download new firmware or drivers, you are presented with a
completely inaccessible combobox. I can kind of but not always get it to
work with System Access, but not at all with Jaws or Window-eyes so far. It
is kind of a combobox that scrolls when it is opened. Often, Jaws doesn't
even recognize it as being a comboboox.

Hi, You have 3 keys which can bwe used for 3 computers. As far as
installing the 64 bit version of jaaws, The installer should detech the

should be able to activate with the same key assooming you are using

Re: [JAWS-Users] Combo boxes

2010-04-03 Thread Hans Pauli Sundstein

Hi Dale, and any one on list, that has trubble's with the combo boxes.

I have visited the webpage that you linked to, and have tryed out the combo
boxes there, and there are two different ways to work, whether you are using
Jaws 10 - 11, or earlyer version's.

Well, if someone have disabled the autoforms mode in Jaws 10 - 11, than it
work's just as in the earlyer version's.

So let me begin with the older versions:
When getting to a combobox, press enter, to activate the forms mode.
Than press alt+down arrow to open the listbox, and then arrow down through
the combobox.
You can also use first letter to jump to a particular letter, and than use
the arrow key's to find what you are searching for.
Now press alt+up arrow, to close the listbox, and often the webpage
automatically click's here, otherwise, tab to a button that can be named go
or search or something else, and press enter here.

On webpage's where there are multiple of comboboxes, you sirtainly need's to
make your selection's in any one, before selecting the go/search ... button.

When you have activated the form's mode in the earlyer version's of Jaws,
you only can tab through the fields on the page, and if you want to read
anything of the text information between the field's, you must press the pc
cursor bbutton, to leave the forms mode, and come back to the virtual
cursor.
When you then again meet's a combobox, you must again activate the forms
mode, by pressing enter.

In Jaws 10 - 11 there are an automatic forms mode, that gives a sound, when
the cursor are placed on a combobox.
Here just press spacebar, to select the combobox, and than alt+down arrow,
and just continue as described above.
When there are pressed alt+up arrow to close the listbox, the combobox
automatically are left, and you can continue to arrow down the page, or tab,
just as you want your self.

I hope that this advice can be helpful to someone.

Hans Pauli.

I am noticing that Web implementations are finding ever more clever ways of
confounding access technology and I don't understand what benefits are
derived.

Try WWW.megabus.com for example.

There is a series of combo boxes there looking for origin and
destinations. Which ever method used to access the combobox Jaws doesn't
speak but it does jump elsewhere on the page. I discovered that if I go
out of forms mode, back to the combobox I can read the selection. I return
to forms mode, arrow or first letter the next navigation and find myself
once more somewhere else on the form, go back to virtuous cursor, relocate
the combobox and so on until the selection is made.

I would certainly like a better solution than that. Remembering that bus
travel is a pretty important travel accessibility option for the blind I
remain eternally grateful that my expensive software technology has put
its development energies into a substitute search for an already very
accessible service provided by google.

This doesn't always work. Like RJ, I notice that when you open some

Try opening it by first turning forms mode on and then using Alt plus

Now arrow down to the choice you want. If it's the type of combo box

it should open the page with whatever choice you selected.

Hi,
these must be combo boxes that work by java script instead of incorporating
a regular submit button designed using html plain.
This has the advantage of the screen changing immidiately when the user
flipps through the available choices.
A screen reader needs to parse the java script before making a choice in
order to present the user with a virtual list of choices from which one is
able to pick without actually manipulating the situation of the web page
itself.
Jaws does have a mechanism for that. I am courious to know the vo solution
for this one.

as long as you have activations left you could install it on serveral

Just download the latest and greatest and go ahead to installing and

Only problem is when you need to reinstall on one of these machines and you
don't have activations left. Then your Jaws dealer needs to suply you with
more keys. But since machines do crash and do get upgradedd it was never a

Re: [JAWS-Users] Combo boxes

2010-04-03 Thread Dale Leavens

Hi Hans,

I am using Jaws 9 on this computer but it doesn't work like that here for
me.

First letter navigation works but immediately I am thrown out of the box to
some other part of the page without the selection being read. For example I
wanted to select Toronto. Toledo was the first 'T', it was selected once I
turned Forms Mode off and relocated the box. Hit enter again to get back
into Forms Mode and hit 'T' again and off focus goes somewhere else. Turning
off forms Mode again and relocating the combo box confirmed that Toronto had
been selected. then down to the next box to select Buffalo Airport or at
least discover it it is an option. As it turns out it is an option but the
second one so again another round into and out of forms mode.

I do have Jaws 11 but have only installed it on my work computer. The joys

Ultimately things just go silent, I cannot close jaws, cannot save my work

I often forget when working in Word to close it and load Jaws 9. Sometimes I
become aware that something isn't keeping up with me as I type, I get the
occasional beep from the computer as if I hit two keys simultaneously. When
this begins to happen it reminds me to save my work, kill Jaws and bring
back Jaws 9 and all goes well.

I am conflicted about replacing 9 with 11 on this machine not sure of the
advantages.

Hi Dale, and any one on list, that has trubble's with the combo boxes.

I have visited the webpage that you linked to, and have tryed out the
combo boxes there, and there are two different ways to work, whether you
are using Jaws 10 - 11, or earlyer version's.

Now press alt+up arrow, to close the listbox, and often the webpage
automatically click's here, otherwise, tab to a button that can be named
go or search or something else, and press enter here.

On webpage's where there are multiple of comboboxes, you sirtainly need's
to make your selection's in any one, before selecting the go/search ...
button.

When you have activated the form's mode in the earlyer version's of Jaws,
you only can tab through the fields on the page, and if you want to read
anything of the text information between the field's, you must press the
pc cursor bbutton, to leave the forms mode, and come back to the virtual
cursor.
When you then again meet's a combobox, you must again activate the forms
mode, by pressing enter.

In Jaws 10 - 11 there are an automatic forms mode, that gives a sound,
when the cursor are placed on a combobox.
Here just press spacebar, to select the combobox, and than alt+down arrow,
and just continue as described above.
When there are pressed alt+up arrow to close the listbox, the combobox
automatically are left, and you can continue to arrow down the page, or
tab, just as you want your self.

I hope that this advice can be helpful to someone.

The joys

Hi,

I am currently using the latest Jaws 11 on an XP home OS system.

I will be purchasing a new laptop shortly with Windows 7 64 bit
system. I have several question for now.

Can I legally use Jaws on two computers without purchasing another
license? Or is my copy of Jaws okay to use on more than one
computer? I don't know if the license will allow me to do that.

Also, if it is allowable to use Jaws on more than one computer and
since I have the original DVD of Jaws 11 which does not have the
latest updates, how do I get the authorization I need so that I
will not be in the demo mode? I figure that I can download the
latest version from FS with 64 bits, but do I need to install Jaws
from my DVD first?

If I need to purchase an additional license, how much does it cost?

I am sorry for so many questions, but this is the first time for me
since I first started using Jaws on one computer. I hope that I
made sense with my questions.

Any help will greatly be appreciated.

2010-04-03 Thread Waqas Chauhdry
It is perfectly legal to install Jaws on different machines. I run Jaws on
three machines (work, laptop and home PC) simultaneously. Further more, FS
was quite happy to reset my three activation keys just in case if I need to
reinstall. I suppose the real cause for concern for them would be if one
Jaws license is used by multiple users and quite rightly so.

Hi,
as long as you have activations left you could install it on serveral
computers along side each other. I don't know and don't believe that it is
legal though. Anyway they won'gt notice or care I suppose.
Just download the latest and greatest and go ahead to installing and
activating.
Only problem is when you need to reinstall on one of these machines and you
don't have activations left. Then your Jaws dealer needs to suply you with
more keys. But since machines do crash and do get upgradedd it was never a
problem with Papenmeir.

Re: [JAWS-Users] using skipe

2010-04-03 Thread Scorpio Forever
Hello Kimsan,

Unfortunately, I had to re-format my system not too long ago, and have not
had a chance to install Skype on my system as of yet.

Let me know where in the world you live, and I may have a plan that will
allow me to call you.

Let me know.

Scorpio
