Ok, lets start with selective startup. There's nothing wrong with using selective startup, that's what I do to keep extra programs that aren't necessary from loading. I can't figure out why you said the keyboard wasn't working, but I can educatedly guess why Jaws wasn't working. I'll bet somehow you unchecked the REaltech sound manager from loading by mistake. That will kill sound every time after Windows loads. So the bottom line, when you go through the startup list, make sure you know which programs you are unchecking so you don't dump one that might be system critical, as the sound manager is for us, and of course, as an anti-virus program is. As to your second question, your Outlook Express files are stored under your documents and settings, Username, Local Settings, application Data, Identities, alphanumeric string, Microsoft, Outlook Express folder. Unless you have Task and Folder options set to show hidden files, you won't see these files. However, if you set up your backup solution to backup your Documents and Settings folder, it will back up your OE .dbx files as well. The other type of backup you can use of course is a program that takes an image of your hard drive and stores it on external media. The image will restore everything if there is a severe crash, including the Windows System and all your installed programs. You don't have to do image files as often, but you should back up your data in the Documents and Settings folder more often, as that likely changes on a daily basis. If you want to uncheck show messages in groups, hit alt V followed by a and b, then arrow up twice and hit inter on show messages in group. This will make your experience a lot smoother. Re: [JAWS-Users] Kendal reader?
The Kindle for PC program voices whatever it voices with its own voice. It does not rely on screen reader access. With that program, some reading is possible. As amy Mason pointed out in the January, 2012 Braille Monitor: The Amazon Kindle for PC provides a slightly better experience in so far as it is possible to go forward and backward in a book, read continuously or by page, and read sentences. Amazon has chosen to allow JAWS and NVDA users to navigate menus with the screen reader, but it has implemented its own commands and voice to read the actual text on the screen, meaning that there is no Braille support for the experience, and users are unable to read in smaller increments than by sentence. Thus, although some rudimentary access to Kindle books is available, it is not nearly enough to use the books for anything but the most casual reading. Re: [JAWS-Users] setting up Windows Live mail
Hi Steve and Dave, Many thanks for your responses. The solution to my problem turned out to be embarrassingly simple--I had forgotten to confirm my settings in gmail so the imap settings weren't being recognized at the login prompt. Anyway, now that I've synched up my account, what is the easiest way to clean up all the old messages that migrated from the gmail server? I want to be sure that Windows Live is not going to download all of them the next time I reopen it. Also, what are the recommended settings to increase accessibility? For example, I think I remember reading something about turning off the preview and folder panes but can't quite find them. I'm still getting somewhat lost within the program, especially with the ribbons. Susan -Original Message- From: Steve Sent: Saturday, February 04, 2012 8:18 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] setting up Windows Live mail Susan, First, when you install the Livemail thing from Microsoft, as you run the installer, there are about nine or so checkboxes at the beginning. These determine which of the components you will be installing. If you don't want anything else, then just uncheck all of them except for the mail program itself. Second, you have two choices here. When you install Gmail, when you run Livemail, you can tell it your GMail address and it will automatically configure that for you, but it will configure it as a Mapi email client. If you want, you can set up Gmail manually instead. I'm going from memory here, because our Windows Live Mail is the earlier version that doesn't have the ribbons. In that version, accounts was under the Tools menu. I think you need to go to the Office Ribbon with alt-h and look for accounts. Or, it could be under the Options tab that you can access with control-shift-o, but I am not certain about that. Microsoft says when you open WLM, you click on Mail and then you will see accounts, for whatever that's worth. Once you find accounts, you do things in the same way that you did for Outlook Express. On the first tab, you enter in your Gmail address, password etc. Then, you go to the servers tab to specify the Gmail Pop3 and SMTP. You will need to go to the advanced tab to specify the port numbers and enable SSL checkboxes. NOTE: Before you set up your email in Google Mail, you need to log-in to Google Mail and check the radio button to enable Pop3. Take my advice, I don't use it anyway. I tried to follow the directions but for some reason my Gmail password is not being accepted. I don't know whether this is a problem with Comcast as my ISP or something about gmail vs. microsoft. [JAWS-Users] graphics question with Internet Explorer
I am using Windows 7, Jaws 11, and IE 9. I want the Jaws settings to show all graphics not tagged graphics when I open a website. Every page I open that I need a specific graphic to show I have to go in and change the setting from tagged graphics to show all graphics. I think it is the configuration manager that I need to set it for all my Internet Explorer pages but I am having a very hard time with this. I went to the default jaws settings in configuration manager and the choice for graphics is show all. I opened the Internet explorer.jcf configuration and it was already set to show all graphics. I did the save on that screen anyway but every page I open in Internet Explorer shows the graphics back to tagged only. I am beginning to think I should just go back to IE 8 although I was really excited when I actually got a Doctor Oz video to play the other day and then got one to play this morning. But I can't replicate what I did except that the link to start the video is a long string of letters and such that only shows up once in a while. I have spent hours and hours trying to figure out exact steps to play the videos. Very frustrating as I am really a Doctor Oz fan. If anyone knows how to make them play, I would love to know. The website is www.doctoroz.com. I also need more graphics to show up on my Facebook page and on some other sites. So how do I make I E 9 remember to show all graphics and not tagged graphics. Re: [JAWS-Users] adobe flash player?
There are three buttons, one of which is unlabelled, just called 'button'. This is the Accept button (accept license Agreement. You may see it as one of two buttons, the other being Q or 'Quit' button. If you don't hear/see anything, press the tab key in that dialogue, and once again press either the 'button' or the i button. you may need to press the I button about three times (presumably for the different components of this awkwardly-fangled Flash player) before the process is completed. Similarly, you may needd to activate the 'button' twice. the dialogue just goes away when the process is completed. Another alternative way to do the whole thing is to install the Flash update from http://ninite/com/flashupdate . - Original Message - From: Kliphton skhleirpehctcoens7...@gmail.com To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Tuesday, February 07, 2012 6:29 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] adobe flash player? Re: [JAWS-Users] graphics question with Internet Explorer
Sharon, you may gain a lot of running a demo of JAWS 13 and trying the page. Sometimes the upgrades can enhance Internet Explorer functionality with different pages. Even if you don't plan to upgrade, you could run the demo and still get a little use of the latest version. It seems like you're doing the right thing with regards to setting graphics mode to All, so I don't know why the setting isn't holding. While on the site, press shift+insert+v, then press G until you reach the graphics options; space until you hear All, then press enter. That way, whatever the setting is in the configuration manager, it will be personalized for this page. More controvertially, you might want to try the page with www.satogo.com. I find several pages where I need to use System Access to read them fully, though I'm going to experiment, now that this has come up, to see if having all graphics spoken solves any of those problems. Re: [JAWS-Users] PDF files?
It is Adobe reader. Which I believe is down loadable for free on the Adobe Web site. Re: [JAWS-Users] PDF files?
yes you use Adobe reader, not flash player! In Windows, change the application association for the file type pdf to whatever program you wish. Re: [JAWS-Users] Major issue! Computer freeze.
Again, many thanks. I must have been hitting the wrong download link. It installed. It looks like I will have to spend some time figuring how to negotiate and use this product. rich - Original Message - From: Steve k...@sbcglobal.net To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Tuesday, February 07, 2012 11:21 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Major issue! Computer freeze. Rich, You need to look for the download now link from that page, it is right above the 4Star rating in the links list. When I initiated the download, I got the IE infobar pop-up and I had to hit alt-n and then the application key to allow the download to proceed. If you successfully downloaded the file, it will be in the folder where you typically place your downloads. The file starts with if-en-trial I think. - Original Message - From: rich rcha...@bellsouth.net To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Sunday, February 05, 2012 9:24 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Major issue! I found a web site that had image for windows with a free 30 day trial. http://download.cnet.com/Image-for-Windows/3000-2242_4-10149389.html I clicked on the download link and after it announced 100 % there was no other information on what to do. I could not find the program in my docs or programs. How would I know if I actually downloaded it? Computer freeze. Thanks for the info. What program do you recommend to take an image for back up? By the way, when the problem began, my sighted wife said the mouse would not work as well as the keyboard. I had not made any changes to the configuration manager prior to the problem. Interestingly, after rebooting, Microsoft ran a check disc? Thanks again. To complete, I went in to msconfig and noticed that selective start was checked. My other options were normal and one other one. What should be checked? That computer is XP home. My second computer is XP pro and when I checked , all 3 options said checked. The main computer would only allow one option to be checked. Another question. I have, I think, an external hard drive to back up information. I am able to copy the C drive in to this but, I am not sure how or if I can copy my e mails from Outlook Express. When in O E, the options to copy to folders were for folders within O E. So, how can I back up
