Re: [JAWS-Users] Saving a Word 2010 docx File Permission Error

2014-12-31 Thread Mike Boyd

Hi Liuda,

First, did you run a virus and/or a malware scan on your computer? If so,
and the problem persists, then try running a repair on your office
installation. To do this:

1. Open Control Panel, and navigate to Programs and Features.
2. Open this and press the letter M for Microsoft. You will land on the
first item which begins with the letter M.

3. Now, arrow on down until you find Microsoft Office 2010
4. open the Context menu by pressing the Applications key or the key combo
Shift + F10, and arrow down to Change, and press Enter on this.
5. Here you will be prompted to repair your Office installation, and you can
just follow the prompts to complete this task.

I hope this fixes your problem, usually, if something suddenly starts to
happen that did not before, and a virus and/or malware scan did not fix the
problem, then this will do it.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Outlook 2010 Question

2014-12-31 Thread Mike Boyd

Tom,

I have discovered the answer to your question I do believe. As it turns out,
an IMAP account cannot save messages to the drafts folder by default in
Outlook, and it cannot be made to do so at this point. As I stated earlier,
they are stored in the Outlook Data File. Here is a link to some discussion
on the Microsoft Answers website dealing with your exact issue:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2010-outlook/outlook-2010-imap-drafts-saved-to-incorrect/e6fd8117-8054-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5

This should clear the whole thing up for you. Unless Microsoft decides to
change the way Outlook handles saved messages for IMAP accounts, this will
not change.

If you suspect that what you are experiencing is the cause of a Windows

This could become time-consuming, but may yield the results you are looking

I will admit that I waited to hear just a bit more feedback about this
program before actually running it through its paces. Perhaps because I
perform regular maintenance, I was fortunate in that the program did not
find much in the way of items recommended for removal. As someone already
pointed out, thank you Steve for the great directions, especially for that
part where all running programs will be stopped, including JAWS. It is my
understanding that the program does not actually install, rather, it is an
executable file that is periodically updated and should probably be
re-downloaded before running again: Is this correct? If so, it is kind of
like Stinger or Microsoft's Safety Scanner, except much faster and more
manageable. Thanks for the recommendation and for the additional posts on
how to get the best from this program.

If you suspect that what you are experiencing is the cause of a Windows
update, or more specifically, an update to Microsoft Outlook, you could look
through your list of installed updates, and un-install updates to Outlook to see
if the desired behavior is restored.
This could become time-consuming, but may yield the results you are looking for.
Sometimes there are updates to Microsoft Outlook that are not for security, or
even critical for that matter, and this is also true of the updates for the
Windows operating system.
If you decide to follow this path, just make sure you understand what you are
removing before doing so.
If you have any questions, just sing out!

HTH,
Rick Justice

[JAWS-Users] JAWS not reading drop down lists and comments in Excel 2013

2014-12-31 Thread DH
Hi,

I've tried JAWS 15 and 16 on a windows 7 machine. JAWS isn't reading drop
down lists in Excel 2013. I press alt + down arrow to open the drop down
list but when I use the arrow keys to navigate through the list, JAWS won't
say anything. I have to press enter on the item I think I want and then
navigate back to the cell to make sure I've chosen the right option. I'm
also noticing that JAWS won't read comments when I right click on a cell and
choose 'Insert comment' from the menu. Again, JAWS won't say anything when I
use the arrow keys to try to review what I've written in the comment.

Any help would be appreciated,

David

[JAWS-Users] end of the year status report

2014-12-31 Thread David Ferrin
Just wanted to report that as of this writing not counting the archive
service there are now 671 subscribers in the database.

The three of us who moderate this monster appreciate that for the most part
everybody plays nice and does their best to follow the guidelines.

Looking back on 2014 I don't recall any major disruptions or episodes that
caused me to turn off the list for any cooling off period which tends to
save what few follicles I have left.

In short thank you all for a successful 2014 and with luck 2015 will turn
out even better. More importantly thank you to Bob Rick for hanging in
there with me. Believe me gang without them there would not be any list.

We'll keep it going for the time being, and before I forget a huge thanks to
my hosting provider who has housed this domain over 6 years already.
Otherwise I would be swimming in red ink.

Never the less happy new year and if anybody wishes to reply write me off

2014-12-31 Thread LeDon
Below are the instructions for making a sound for a link instead of saying,
link. I followed these instructions but I did have some sighted help too. I
think that the steps will do the trick for you. I had a problem where jaws
said both the word, link, and played the tone. But after turning the
computer off and restarting from scratch, it worked. It just plays the tone
on a link.

Below are the instructions that I have. Good luck to anyone trying to do
this. LeDon.

1. Press, Insert + 6, on the number row to open the Settings Center press,
control, shift, + D, to open default all applications.
2. Arrow down to, Speech Sound Schemes press right arrow to open.
3. Arrow down to, Modify Schemes..., press the spacebar to open.
4. Tab to, edit selected scheme button, press the spacebar to open.
5. Control + tab to the control type tab tab 1 time into the list of
control types.
6. Use first letter navigation pressing the letter, L, until you have, Link
Speak Control Type Using Normal Voice, highlighted tab 1 time into the
behavior list.
7. Arrow down so that, Play Sound, is checked.
8. Tab 1 time to the, select wave file button, press the spacebar to open.
9. Tab 1 time into your list of sounds to choose from. Arrow down through
this list when you have a sound highlighted tab 1 time to the, play sound
button, press the spacebar to hear it. If you don't like this sound,
shift + tab, back into the sound list choose another sound tab to the
play button, pressing the spacebar to hear it. Keep doing this until you
have the sound of choice you want played.
10. Now that you have your sound selected, tab to the okay button press
the spacebar. Again, tab to okay press the spacebar. Tab 1 time press
the spacebar on the save selected scheme button. Tab to the okay button
press the spacebar, tab to okay press enter. You're done. Now, you'll
hear the selected sound whenever you come across a link in any application.

In my experience, you have to tell windows what you want to run. For example,
Run CMD takes you to an old-fashioned DOS command line. Run Msconfig
takes you to the main Windows configuration file. Also, the command remembers
the last several programs you ran, so, if you use a particular command
frequently, you can save keystrokes.

Jim,

Those instructions can't be right. Typing RUN from the run dialog won't
open anything.

There are two ways to see what version of flash you are running:

1. Go to control panel and look for flashplayer.
Under the advanced tab, where the update settings are, you can see your
current version using the Jaws cursor.

2. Open your browser. Go to the Tools, Add-ons page. Look under all
add-ons, or currently loaded add-ons if you know Flash is running. Under
the list of add-ons, you will see Shockwave Flash with the version number

I don't know Windows 8.1. There may be another word which actuates the
execute file in flash player. Try other variants of the term - flash,
flash player, adobe flash...

Or go as if you would delete the program. Ask for details. You may
hear its version before you actually hit the delete button.

You may also go to the adobe site and find out the latest version. If
you did not download an update in the last few weeks, you may not have
the latest one.

As a last resort, go to the adobe site and download the latest version,
If you already have it, you'll be notified.

have to up- or down arrow to get to the right one.

Thanks.

Mario,

I put all these lines into Notepad just to come up with some pronunciation
distinctions. Definite context or word usage variants here.

Definite verb tense distinction:
will read
has read
is reading
was reading

Definite verb/noun distinction:
putting up with him
He is good at putting
(the above will only work if no words follow the verb)
He is good at putting the ball into the hole - not right in golf
his putting is better now - correct for golf

occasionally, I find that JAWS mispronounces putting, but when reviewing
with word navigation or entering a dictionary entry the word is pronounced
correctly. I don't recall what other words at this time. does anyone know
and is there a way to correct this issue?

[JAWS-Users] Key stroke to skip forward in a youtube video

2014-12-31 Thread Dujari, Prateek
Hello gang.
I learnt here that while a youtube.com vid is playing, one can hit 'insert 3'
(which is the JFW pass-through key), then hit l to skip forward in the vid by a
few seconds. What is the letter to hit to skip ahead by a greater increment,
say 30sec or 1min or maybe even more?

I like AVG. I've had good success with it but some have had problems,
especially with the new interface. Best thing to do is try it and see if
it works for you. Latest version is 2015. Although Microsoft Security
Essentials is accessible, I'd stay away from it. I can tell you from
personal experience that it is not very effective. Had one computer that
MSE said was protected, but which had over 200 viruses on it. Avg found
and got rid of them.

Hi Steve Mauricio,

If you use the Send Space Wizard make sure to uncheck it! LOL LOL

I left it checked just to see what would happen yes, I had to reinstall
it. LOL

However, the AdwCleaner creates a folder on the root of the C drive , is it
safe to delete it's contents? The contents seem to tell you what has been
removed I assume, am I correct / safe in my assumption? I do like the ease
in which the program can be navigated with Jaws. Thank you very much for
letting the list know about it.

Take care.

Mauricio,

It might be safe to proceed with all items checked. But, it is a good idea
to try to look over the list. Periodically, some programs are incorrectly
identified as malware that aren't; I remember a while ago, the System Access
screen reader had some components that were identified by Malware Bytes
version 2 as malware. Obviously, if that happens, you could have some
issues.

So, to the extent you can, it is a good practice to look over the list.
Obviously, you probably won't be able to know what the alphanumeric strings
are that it might find in registry keys, but you can see what files,
processes, browser help objects and toolbars it finds, and you can use a
search engine to see if they are regarded as harmful.

My experience with this program as been good on the five computers I've run
it on so far. But, it isn't all-inclusive and I can't guarantee that it
wouldn't hose something you might use.

Hi Steve,

The fact that this program is accessible using JAWS has me very interested.
However, in your instructions for using Adwcleaner, you mention having to
check items we would like to have purged from our computers: What I would
like to know is how will we know which items are necessary to remove and
which should remain? Can the casual computer user cause harm if they choose
to check all items without actually knowing what each item refers to, or is
every item found by Adwcleaner fair game? For instance, CCleaner, which I
recognize is not used for removing malware, seldom, if ever, is so invasive
that critical components are recommended for removal.

Thanks for any additional information you can provide.

I'm glad it seemed to work for you. I know my client has had several people

program, since a lot of other sites recommended either running in safe mode
or some program where you had to make a purchase for it to supposedly clean
the computer, I wass so excited when I ran it on her PC and it cleaned
almost everything out. I only had to go back in and delete one process that

Hi Steeve.

I'm always on the lookout for a good computer purger.

I decided to try Adwcleaner based on your recommendations.

First, since neither your message nor the Adwcleaner website mentioned the
price, I was glad to find it was free.

Second, your tutorial told me exactly what to expect.

Third, my results showed me some registry entries I had never noticed so I
decided it wouldn't hurt to go ahead and clean them.

Finally, my computer is still working fine. So I think this is a keeper.

Thanks for your recommendation.

[JAWS-Users] Reading guitar tabs with Jaws

2014-12-31 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

So I’m trying to figure out how to read tabs for the guitar. I’ve always
played by ear or memorization, but figured I’d finally learn tabs. Doing so
however seems a bit challenging with Jaws. I’m sure it in part has to do
with my lack of familiarity with tabs in general, but with all the E’s, b’s,
g’s and dashes and so on, it sounds like Jaws is just reading a bunch of
gibberish. Can anyone recommend a better method or tips on how to decipher
these hieroglyphics with JFW. My guitar learning was all done in Spanish. So
I’m also trying to get used to the notes in English.

Thanks,

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Setting IE 11 to open with a Blank Page, and Not Using
Tabs

Is it possible to set IE 11 to work like older IE versions? I like having it
open with a blank page, and would prefer having separate windows open,
rather than dealing with tabs.

Hi Dave,

After doing a couple of searches, you can't disable Tab browsing in IE11.
If you want to disable Tab browsing, uninstall IE11 install IE10 or, if
you had IE10 previously , uninstalling IE11 will take you back to IE10. HTH
Take care.

Mike,

Thanks tremendously. Never thought of that. Works like a charm, but now I
wonder if you can step over to your iEasyChair and tell me how to disable
Tabs browsing in IE 11? Perhaps a registry change?

Hi Dave,

From what I understand the Use blank button has been removed from IE 11.
So, go to Tools / Options / General Tab, Home Page Field Type the
following:

 about:blank

and then select Apply OK to save the changes.
Take care.

Mike,

Yep. Sort of what I thought. Why do they have to mess with things that are
working well?

Appreciate your validation of my assumptions.
