 Hi friends,

I have just purchased a copy of Windows 8. With no start bar, it is very

[JAWS-Users] dectalk usb and my pc's sleep mode.

2015-06-21 Thread Adam Morris

Hi all,

running win7 jaws 16 with a dectalk USB.
If I put my pc to sleep and then press spacebar to wake it up I have no

If I use one of the software synths with jaws I have speech.

If I use DECtalk USB with NVCA I have speech also.
Is there a setting in jaws I need to change or could this be a bug

[JAWS-Users] File Manager Not Available Message with JAWS 16

Hi All,

Can anyone help me with this problem? I have a new Toshiba laptop, and
using JAWS 16 and repeatedly get a message saying File Manager Not
Available. This often begins with closing a file using Alt, F followed by
X. After several file managers not being able to shut, I am unable to
access any further documents, the desktop or folders. I have to shutdown
the computer and begin again.

Any thoughts?

You would have to consult the Microsoft website for their pricing

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and WindowsLive mail!

Hi Bob,

If you are running the Virtual Ribbons the context menu won't come up.
While in WLM press, Insert + V, make sure Virtual Ribbons is unchecked.
The keystroke for toggling is, Control + F1, not control + F10. You can
only use the , Control + F1, keystroke while the ribbons are activated with
the, Alt key. Now I have to say that since I don't use WLM I am only
assuming the ribbons keystrokes work the same in WLM as in other Office
applications.
Take care.

least one hour after starting, before you try to use JAWS to see if the

Ok, so, I'm having a major senior moment here.

On my home Windows 7 PC using Jaws 14, I find that I can most consistently
get to the main texxt on a web page by using the Jaws key followed by enter.

I can't seem to do this on my Windows 7 work laptop using Jaws 16.

I guess my problem is determining where the Jaws key is on the laptop. I
have tried using the insert key on the main laptop keyboard, but with only
limited success.

What am I missing??

Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessible Google Search

2015-06-21 Thread Scorpio Forever

A Google search functions just fine for me.

I type in the search criteria after I've logged into my Google account,
press enter, then press the letter H to go directly to the headings of the
search results.

Each hit is a heading, so you can simply press H all the way down the page,
at which point, if one wants more information on a particular hit, one
simply arrows down from that particular heading.

Just so I don't lose my place in the hit list, I have my search results to
display on a separate tab or page when I enter on one of the hits I want to
view, that way, once I've seen if that hit yielded the desired results, I
can either choose to save it for off-line viewing, add it to my favourites,
or do what ever I need with it.

I am assured however, that whether I have gleaned the information I needed
from the viewed page, that I'll be returned to my place in the hit list to
keep looking for results. This setting comes in handy as I have my results
set to display 100 hit per page.

Either way, I've never had any problems that I can think of when doing a
Google search on the regular site of http://www.google.com/

I even have my homepage set to it, which is kind of redundant, I know, as my
default search engine is set as Google, and I can actually search from the
address bar, but old habits die hard. LOL.

Either way, I am also using Windows 7 home edition, with Jaws 16, and
Internet Explorer 11.

Perhaps that could be your problem?

Not updating to the newest version of Internet Explorer?

Just a thought. Smiles.

In WLM 2012, the only version to contain the ribbon tabs, the option to

Then arrow down to Options, and select Mail. From here tab down to find

If you upgrade your current version of Windows, (Windows 7, 8 or 8.1),

After that period, Windows 10 will have to be purchased either by download
from Microsoft, or by purchasing a new computer with Windows 10 already
 installed.
You would have to consult the Microsoft website for their pricing

From what I understand, this will be the last version of Windows, any
 updates
to it will be mandatory unless you have a premium version installed.
It appears that they are following the model of Apple.
Pay close attention to what I said earlier, this is an upgrade for Windows

Now having said that, also keep in mind that any of this info is subject to

made it to public release yet.

Re: [JAWS-Users] dectalk usb and my pc's sleep mode.

2015-06-21 Thread Brian Lee
Hello Adam,

I don't use a USB DecTalk synthesizer but if you find that other USB
connected devices do the same then you might want to disable the USB
suspension mode under the advanced power options. Here are the steps to
follow if you want to see if turning off the suspend mode makes a difference
for the DecTalk USB synthesizer.

1. type power options into the Windows search box.

2. Use down arrow to the Change power-saving options choice and
press enter key.

3. Tab to the change plan settings link for the plan you are using
and press the spacebar.

4. Tab to the Advance Power Settings link and use spacebar.
Focus should be in the combo box where you choose the plan.

5. Tab to the Settings tree view and use down arrow key until you get
to the USB settings item.

6. Use right arrow key to open a level in this tree view if JAWS says
it is closed.

7. Use down arrow to the USB selective suspend setting and then use
right arrow to expand this level.

8. Arrow down to the Setting item and use right arrow key to find a
combo box where you can disable the suspend mode.

9. If the setting is enabled just arrow down to the Disabled option.

10. Press enter key to make your change.

Take care.

Hello Mike,

The backstage option in the Save category of the options is for opening and
saving files. The General category has the checkbox for not showing the
startup screen when opening Word. In my version of Word it is just before
the OK button in the General category. However, I don't have the standard
version of Word 2010 so it might vary from your version.

It's probably better to install JAWS updates from the Freedom Scientific
web site http://www.freedomscientific.com/JAWSHQ/JAWSHeadquarters01than
it is to download the patch that you get when you download updates from
the notices. Downloading from the FS site takes longer, but you get a
completely new version rather than a patch grafted on to your resident
version. Once you get to the main site, hit the downloads link and
follow instructions to your particular product - be careful to select
either 32 bit or 64 bit as appropriate - or perhaps like adobe the site
can tell what you have resident on your computer.

At the end of the download you will not get a set up wizard like you get
when you first download a new version. From my experience, the download
will maintain all of your JAWS settings.

After you entered on the Apple update.
Tab to the install button,
Select the updates by arrowing and pressing the spacebar.
There could be a couple pending.

I believe you have to type in your password for your ID.

Then, the install option will appear again.

After all that, let iTunes install all.

Wait for the finish button and most likely a restart is needed for the
updates to save and work correctly.

Re: [JAWS-Users] low battery

2015-06-21 Thread Nicholas Jackson
Hi Petras,

When you get down to a certain percentage of battery power (ten
percent or so), Jaws should announce Low Battery and advise you to
save your work and plug into an outlet. The message may vary depending
on the model of the computer, but like I said, you should hear
something like this. I've never had it happen when a sighted person
was around, but I think it shows up on the screen as well.

homepage problem

Hello Listers,

For those of you who use the

www.google.com/accessibility/labs/search/

As your home page, thanks to a friend. A solution has been found. I will
paste it below.

DO you have the preview pane and preview handlers disabled? If not, try
the following.

To disable the preview pane:
1. Open Computer.
2. Tab until you hear
command module toolbar, organize button
3. Press the spacebar to activate the menu.
4. Arrow down to the Layout submenu and select it.
5. Arrow down to Preview pane and press Enter to uncheck it.
6. See if the problem persists.

To disable preview handlers:
1. Open Computer.
2. Open the Tools menu.
3. Select Folder options.
4. Navigate to the View tab.
5. Tab to the treeview of options.
6. Arrow down until you find the setting labeled
Show preview handlers in preview pane
7. If it says that it is on, press the spacebar to toggle it off.
8. Tab to the Apply button and select it to save the changes.
9. Press Enter or tab to the OK button to close the Folder Options
dialog. If the setting was already off, then just skip steps 7 and 8.
10. See if the problem still persists.
I tried searching from with in the page it self, after applying the
solution. It is back. It works again. So so happy. Happy searching.

Hi, folks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] changing startup and shut down sound

2015-06-21 Thread Brian Lee
Hello,

There is a small utility, a portable app, which gives a person the ability
to change the Windows 7 startup sound. It apparently also works on Windows
8 and Windows 8.1 but I haven't tested it on those versions of Windows. It
is called WinAeroTweaker. The developer has made this portable app
available for download but not for distribution without his consent. The
download is in a zipped file. When you open the zipped file and run the
WinAeroTweaker.EXE file you will be told it needs to be uncompressed. Do
this and when unzipping is done a folder is created in the same folder you
have the downloaded file, which is usually your downloads folder. When you
open the folder there is a subfolder for Windows 7 and a WinAeroTweaker.EXE
file on the same level. If using Windows 7 you should open that folder and
use the WinAeroTweaker.EXE file in it. It is possible that the
WinAeroTweaker file on the same level as the Windows 7 folder is for Windows
8 and Windows 8.1 but I haven't tried it. When you use the
WinAeroTweaker.EXE file in the Windows 7 folder, run it, and agree to
security prompts, you are in a list of things the program will do. If you
read the current line JAWS might say information one of one. Use down
arrow key because there are several options. When you get to the Startup
sound item use tab key until you get to the Replace startup sound option
and use spacebar. You can then browse for the sound you want to use and use
the open button to choose it. You will get a reboot button, which you need
to use for the change to be completed. The same window that has the option
for replacing the startup sound also has a button for restoring back to the
default Windows startup sound.

The link you can use to download this utility is below:

http://winaero.com/download.php?view.1796

When you get to the site find the link Download WinAeroTweaker and press
enter key. Use Alt with N to move to the information bar. Tab to the Save
split button and down arrow to find the Save as option. Press enter and
save the .zip file where you want it.

The file you use for the startup sound needs to be a .WAV file.

Take care.

[JAWS-Users] memo to correct a falsehood that is being spread

2015-06-21 Thread David Ferrin
This is unbelievable to me that this message needs to be written, but for as
often as I am hearing about it I can't imagine how much it is going around.

While it is true that a very few members on here have spoken to me directly
on the phone, the fact is for the vast majority this is simply not true. The
reason I am saying this is because Bob Edenhofer is going around telling
people he does not have to listen to their constructive criticism or
suggestions because they aren't moderators or have anything to do with
running the list.

He is also saying that we are buddies ETC where in fact I have never spoken
with the man or ever had any contact with him other than over email. Maybe
it is wishful thinking on his part I have no idea at all.

I didn't start this list to make friends although that in some cases has
happened, my goal is to contribute to the benefit of the world in which we
all on here have to live.

I am so very sorry that the format of this list has to be used for such a
purpose but I see no other way around the problem.

I thought after almost 10 years I had heard it all but surprise to me guess
not.

A good friend of mine says it doesn't take all kinds there just are all
kinds.

Re: [JAWS-Users] windows 10

2015-06-21 Thread Dialup

Hello Petras,
Windows 10 won't be released until the end of July.
If you are a JAWS user, my opinion is that you should not install
Windows 10 until there are first-hand reports on it's functionality
specifically with JAWS, and in general with accessibility.

I launch OneDrive, and it states in order to use OneDrive, sign into this pc
with your Microsoft account. I then click this link that says connect to a
Microsoft account, then it says enter in current password for my Microsoft
account and it doesn't recognize it huh? I was able to sign in online into
my Microsoft account so what current password are they looking for.

I'm using windows 8.1.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] how to make spellcheck read errors in word 2013

Hi,

I'm using office 365 and I am trying to spellcheck a word document.
I'm pretty sure the document has spelling errrors but when I go to the
review tab and hit enter on the spelling and grammar it doesn't read
if there are errors, is there a setting I need to activate to make
this happen? I'm using JAWS 16, and windows 8.1.

thanks,

Dacia

Many thanks in anticipation,
