[JAWS-Users] Quick correction

Hello All,

In an email I sent yesterday, I intended to put "hotdog." To me this typo
was offensive and I apologize. Please, no need to respond!

Thank you.

Hi Wayne,

Hang in there buddy, because without your feedback they won't know how to
help the next person having these problems under the same circumstances.
You know there are a bunch of us here that will help if we can!
Take care.

This is exactly why I continue to be so disturbed by this entire scenario.

I can assure you that if the "get windows 10" notification re-appears on my

I always teach my studednts and my children to choose their battles, but
this is a battle that I feel must be engaged in.

I find it totally un-acceptable not to have the complete and free choice of
whether or not to install an operating system, or any software program for

called-for.

I just got off of the phone with the Microsoft Accessibility support line.
I can't say that I am as happy as the rest of you have been with the
assistance I received. Before beginning to remote into my computer, he
tried every way possible to convince me to let him install Windows10.
Maybe he just did not understand English well. I finally had to ask to
speak to a supervisor or manager, and he then agreed to do what I was
asking.

When he was done, I asked him to review what he had done. He told me that
he hid the Windows10 installation icon. I asked how long will the icon stay
hidden and he said for a few days. I told him that I wanted it removed
completely from my computer and he said that there is no way to do that, and
that I will be happier in a few days if I would call back and have them
install windows10 for me.

So on the positive side , I will not be annoyed by the Windows10 update
window for a few days.

Hello, everyone.

As I stated earlier, despite my best efforts, the "Get Windows 10"
message re-appeared on my home Windows 7 computer once again late this
afternoon.

Admittedly, I did not install the GWX control panel program software that a
few had suggested, because I was a little leary of putting new software on
my computer without really knowing what I was doing.

Anyway, having spent far too many hours on this needlessly-created issue so
far, I decided to call the Microsoft Accessibility Hotline for assistance.

It turns out that somehow, the "get windows 10" message, and associated
files had been installed on my computer in several different locations.
It took the accessibility specialist a full hour to get everything properly
uninstalled and operating as it should.

I couldn't tell for sure, but I even think the accessibility specialist was
getting frustrated at several points.

I used this situation as an opportunity to let her know in no uncertain
terms that Microsoft is not making any friends among blind computer users
who are being harassed repeatedly with the "get windows 10"
message, and that I would hope this could somehow be taken into
consideration.

I am sure, as someone else pointed out, this complaint and my situation will
not mean diddley to Microsoft. But, I would urge anyone with this issue to
contact the Accessibility Hotline, rather than trying to go it alone with
only frustration as the end result.

At least, this is my suggestion at this time, based on my recent experience.

Wayne, I'm not sure of the exact procedures needed for accessing your school
work. I can only surmise here.

I'm sure if they're using Google Drive to deliver school work to you the
book or whatever info they want you to review must be downloaded first from
a folder that your teacher created on Google Drive. You can also click on a
document and have it opened up without having to download it first, and then
locate it to open up.

Every single aspect of Google Drive is accessible via keyboard shortcut
keys. Review the details on that link I shared with you which gives great
tips on using a screen reader with Google Drive.
There is also links for reviewing the page of shortcut keys there too.

Now once you used the Username and Password to log into Google Drive, did
you first turn off the Virtual cursor press [Insert]+[z] and then tried
using the [Tab] key to navigate around the screen? Do a little exploring
that way and see what JAWS tells you.

You may end up on a file or document which clearly tells you that your
school work is enclosed. Then you simply press the [Enter] or [Spacebar] key
on that item to have it open up in your browser.

Don't be nervous about exploring the screen this way. It may seem tedious,
but JAWS will read better if you do things this way while in Google Drive.

My instructor insists on Google Drive because she gives assignments,
corrects and grades work and makes comments only in that way. Your info is
tremendous but it will take some time to get a handle on it. I am working

The FTP is how the publisher sent the book and I have to work with that
form. I hope I have a little time to learn Spanish along with all the tech

FTP and Google Drive are 2 different methods of transferring/viewing files.

Maybe it's best if you tell your instructer to simply email the file to you
as an attachment.

Assuming everything you have done to this point is correct and the file is
in fact open in Adobe reader or a like minded program it is possible the
school has sent you a non-accessible file. Try using enhanced OCR and see

Not sure what you mean "ftp" file. FTP generally stands for File Transfer
Protocol which is a method to move a file from one computer to another.
I use FTP regularly to transfer files from another computer while I am
remotely connected to their computer.

Hello-

The publisher of my Spanish textbook has sent a ftp file to me with
instructions on how to open the file using File Explorer. I went to the
menus and to view and clicked on view file with file explorer but there is
no readable text. Can Jaws read these files or do I need another method?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Download and read a ftp file

2016-01-25 Thread wayne smith
Thanks so much. I am in the process of learning how it works and it is
taking time.

The ftp file was sent as a link from the Disabilities Center after the
publisher, Yale University Press, sent it to them. The link takes me to a
website where I enter the user name and password they sent along with the
file link. I am now trying to save the file as a text file rather than a
web page.

Lots of new steps.

FTP and Google Drive are 2 different methods of transferring/viewing files.

Maybe it's best if you tell your instructer to simply email the file
to you as an attachment.

Not sure what you mean "ftp" file. FTP generally stands for File Transfer
Protocol which is a method to move a file from one computer to another.
I use FTP regularly to transfer files from another computer while I am

Hi,
The iTunes folder will be where you imported the music from. For example, I
have all of my music that I imported into iTunes in my music folder on my

where your music was originally before you imported them into iTunes, and it

One tip I must give you is turn off the "Virtual Cursor" once you are logged
into the Google Drive interface. You'll be able to not only navigate the
interface better using the [Tab] key but the various keyboard shortcuts
Google has made available can be used. Good luck to you.

This is exactly why I continue to be so disturbed by this entire
scenario.

I can assure you that if the "get windows 10" notification re-appears on
my computer, the Microsoft Accessibility Support line will get another
call from me, and I will not be happy.

I always teach my studednts and my children to choose their battles, but
this is a battle that I feel must be engaged in.

I find it totally un-acceptable not to have the complete and free choice

I can't say that I am as happy as the rest of you have been with the
assistance I received. Before beginning to remote into my computer, he
tried every way possible to convince me to let him install Windows10.
Maybe he just did not understand English well. I finally had to ask to
speak to a supervisor or manager, and he then agreed to do what I was
asking.

When he was done, I asked him to review what he had done. He told me
that he hid the Windows10 installation icon. I asked how long will the
icon stay hidden and he said for a few days. I told him that I wanted
it removed completely from my computer and he said that there is no way
to do that, and that I will be happier in a few days if I would call
back and have them install windows10 for me.

So on the positive side , I will not be annoyed by the Windows10 update
window for a few days.

Hello, everyone.

As I stated earlier, despite my best efforts, the "Get Windows 10"
message re-appeared on my home Windows 7 computer once again late this
afternoon.

Admittedly, I did not install the GWX control panel program software
that a few had suggested, because I was a little leary of putting new
software on my computer without really knowing what I was doing.

Anyway, having spent far too many hours on this needlessly-created
issue so far, I decided to call the Microsoft Accessibility Hotline for
assistance.

It turns out that somehow, the "get windows 10" message, and associated
files had been installed on my computer in several different locations.
It took the accessibility specialist a full hour to get everything
properly uninstalled and operating as it should.

I couldn't tell for sure, but I even think the accessibility specialist
was getting frustrated at several points.

I used this situation as an opportunity to let her know in no uncertain
terms that Microsoft is not making any friends among blind computer
users who are being harassed repeatedly with the "get windows 10"
message, and that I would hope this could somehow be taken into
consideration.

I am sure, as someone else pointed out, this complaint and my situation
will not mean diddley to Microsoft. But, I would urge anyone with this
issue to contact the Accessibility Hotline, rather than trying to go it
alone with only frustration as the end result.

At least, this is my suggestion at this time, based on my recent
experience.

Holger, Tom, Rose and whomever else, it is possible to have the get
windows 10 icon out of the systray by going to the notification area
icons in the control panel or simply searching for this applett.
keep tabbing til you get to an gwx item, down arrow to never, tab to and
space bar on the ok button. this will turn it off but I don't know how
to get it back if you should decide to accept the offer, as I
understand, you will have to use the app to recieve a confirmation email
with a code of some sorts when upgrading.

I don't know the answer to your question.

Perhaps others on list might be of better assistance than I can be, since my
experience is based only on Windows 7.

Hi Tom,

[JAWS-Users] Instructions For Getting Rid Of "Get Windows 10" message Hello.

I received permission to post the following set of instructions for getting
rid of the "get Windows 10" message from a member of the JFW support list.
Specifically, the instructions come from Adrian Spratt, and seem very easy
to follow:

1. Begin by typing "Command Prompt" in the Win7 search window. Wait a
moment for JAWS to settle. Maybe arrow down once and up arrow once to ensure
focus is on that prompt. But don't do any more arrowing than that.

2. Now, use your applications key, and arrow down to "run as
administrator." On my system, it's three times. Press enter.

3. Run the command prompt window with Win key-r.

4. Type or copy:

WUSA /UNINSTALL /KB:3035583

5. Follow the on-screen prompts, and when complete type exit to close
Command Prompt.

That should stop the Win10 notification from appearing until the next
Windows automatic update.

It will also put the nasty file in your critical or important updates when
you commence the second stage, aimed at ensuring the file is not included in
the next automatic update.

To hide Windows Updates from installing it again:

Go to Windows Update via Windows search and press enter.

Tab to "Change settings" and press enter.

Check the third item down, something to the effect of "Do it myself." Tab to
OK.

Tab to something like "Critical or important update available" and press
enter.

If the file is there, right-click and down arrow to hide. Press enter, then
OK.

Tab back to "Change settings." Select "Automatic." Tab to OK.

Alt-F4 out of the dialog.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Update On "Get Windows 10" Saga

2016-01-25 Thread Tom Behler
This is exactly why I continue to be so disturbed by this entire scenario.

I can assure you that if the "get windows 10" notification re-appears on my
computer, the Microsoft Accessibility Support line will get another call
from me, and I will not be happy.

I always teach my studednts and my children to choose their battles, but
this is a battle that I feel must be engaged in.

I find it totally un-acceptable not to have the complete and free choice of
whether or not to install an operating system, or any software program for
that matter. And, to be constantly harassed if you do not is totally un
called-for.

Hello, everyone.

As I stated earlier, despite my best efforts, the "Get Windows 10" message
re-appeared on my home Windows 7 computer once again late this afternoon.

It
took the accessibility specialist a full hour to get everything properly
uninstalled and operating as it should.

I couldn't tell for sure, but I even think the accessibility specialist was
getting frustrated at several points.

I used this situation as an opportunity to let her know in no uncertain
terms that Microsoft is not making any friends among blind computer users
who are being harassed repeatedly with the "get windows 10" message, and
that I would hope this could somehow be taken into consideration.

This morning when I started Windows Live Mail, version 16.4..., the menu bar
acted very strange indeed. When I pressed the alt key focus was on “new”
instead of the usual “home”. Moving around the menus is frustrating to say the
least. Nothing is where it belongs and pressing enter on the items does nothing
I can get to the “Home” column heading but when I press enter the only thing
there is “update all accounts”, arrowing down reveals nothing below the “Home”
heading.
I have tried shutting down and restarting. Have tried both the latest versions
of Jaws 16 and 17 to no avail, I tried repairing Windows essentials I don’t
know what else to try. Receiving and sending mail is working as normal. I am

my computer without really knowing what I was doing.

Anyway, having spent far too many hours on this needlessly-created issue so
far, I decided to call the Microsoft Accessibility Hotline for assistance.

It turns out that somehow, the "get windows 10" message, and associated
files had been installed on my computer in several different locations. It
took the accessibility specialist a full hour to get everything properly
uninstalled and operating as it should.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Update On "Get Windows 10" Saga

2016-01-25 Thread Annette Carr
I just got off of the phone with the Microsoft Accessibility support line.
I can't say that I am as happy as the rest of you have been with the
assistance I received. Before beginning to remote into my computer, he
tried every way possible to convince me to let him install Windows10. Maybe
he just did not understand English well. I finally had to ask to speak to a
supervisor or manager, and he then agreed to do what I was asking.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Update On "Get Windows 10" Saga

Hello, everyone.

As I stated earlier, despite my best efforts, the "Get Windows 10" message
re-appeared on my home Windows 7 computer once again late this afternoon.

It
took the accessibility specialist a full hour to get everything properly
uninstalled and operating as it should.

I am sure, as someone else pointed out, this complaint and my situation will
not mean diddley to Microsoft. But, I would urge anyone with this issue to

Hi all! How are you all? I just wanted to to tell you that I imported a CD
that I bought at my church of a band. But I want to do is to find the iTunes
folder and find those songs that I imported in order to copy and paste them to
a thumb drive guys! I don't know where that folder is located with my
imported songs that I have in iTunes. Do you have any idea? If so, I will
really appreciate any help with this. I tried to copy and paste the songs form
iTunes it self where it says converted 1 and so on, but when I tried to paste
Those songs to the folder that I created on my Thumb drive they were not there
guys! I look forward for any suggestions! Just to let you know, I have a
Windows 8 computer, and I'm running JAWS 14 with on it guys. Thanks so much
