Re: [JAWS-Users] reg cleaners
Best thing to do in that case is attempt running the test on the computer having problems, assuming you can get it to stay up long enough to run the test. Wow, 8088? I remember those. Actually, my first laptop was an 8086 running I think Dos 4.10, later upgraded to Dos 5.0. Think this was back in the late 1980's. I am pretty sure even a 15 year old computer would trounce that 8086 any day of the week with both hands tied behind it's back. At any rate, give the programs I mentioned a whirl and see what happens. Oh, and the less running in the background, the better, especially for the memory test. If you are interested in the docking station I mentioned, here's a link for it. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00T0ZRAOK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8=1 Shane On 2/27/2017 9:54 PM, Lenny McHugh wrote: Shane, I do not have the docking station. Start the computer and wait until JAWS starts talking on the log-in screen. 2. Press tab until you get to the password for your user id, counting the number of times you had to press tab if JAWS again does not speak on the log-in screen, after waiting for a while when you turn the computer on, press tab the number of times you counted, enter your password and press enter. These steps won't work with Windows 8 or 10, & why they won't is below my steps. For those of you that have Jaws set to start at the Windows log-in screen, but it doesn't, this might work for you. I looked in, msconfig, & found that JAWS Freedom Scientific wasn't at the top of the list on the Start-up Page / Tab, so this is what I did. 1. Press, Windows key + R, to open the run dialog. 2. Type, *msconfig*, without the stars, & press enter. 3. Press, control + tab, until you get to the, Start-up Page / Tab. 4. I arrowed down the list, & unchecked any items above, JAWS Freedom Scientific, on the Start-up Page / Tab. Note: Only uncheck the items / programs above JAWS Freedom Scientific, & nothing else. Pay close attention to what you uncheck because you are going to recheck these items / programs shortly. 5. Tab to the, Okay, button, press the spacebar, & tab 1 time to, Restart, & press enter to restart your computer. 6. Once your computer is booted up repeat steps 1 thru 3, & you will notice that JAWS Freedom Scientific is now at the top of the list. 7. Now, arrow down the list of items / programs on the Start-up Page / Tab, check the items / programs that you unchecked previously, & repeat step #5. Now Jaws should start on the Windows log-in screen when your computer starts. I did the above steps on 4 different computers, both desktop & lattop, 'm not going to say it works everytime, but it sure works most of the time, which I can say is a damn site better than before I followed the above steps. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS/Windows Inquiry
Hi Jerry, While performing the "Alt+Tab keystroke, are you holding the Alt key down while tabbing through all open windows? If you press Alt+Tab and then just let go, the default is to cycle between the last 2 windows accessed; you must continue to hold down the Alt key while pressing the Tab key and only when the desired application has focus do you let go of the Alt key. If you have been using this keystroke as described above, I would be curious as to the cause of the problem. [JAWS-Users] Questions relating to an upgrade from Office 2010 to Office 2016
Hi. Jim's posts this afternoon have me hankering to upgrade to 2016. I'm really hoping, though, that the upgrade will eliminate an annoying problem FS, this list and I have been unable to solve concerning the clipboard interfering with JAWS in Outlook. So, my questions: Does anyone know if FS/VFO has announced they officially support Office 2016 now? The recent JAWS 18 upgrade notes suggests they do. I also have a call into FS about this. Second, are there big differences between 2010 and 2016, especially in the ribbon? (I don't use the JAWS virtual ribbon.) Third, when I upgrade, will my 2010 settings be retained? How about my JAWS settings for Office? As you might guess, I'm hoping for the least possible time-consuming transition. [JAWS-Users] Database and/or Dictionary Programs For Windows 10 with JAWS
Hi everyone. I am contemplating getting an ElBraille, which, I'm told, is ostensibly a laptop with Window 10 and JAWS, but with a Perkins-style keyboard. I'm wondering if there are any database or dictionary programs which I might be able to download to use on this when I purchase it. I'm currently using a BrailleSense u2 and am unable to access the FS website to see what programs are accessible. I do not have the address for the developers of the ElBraille, or I would have written to them directly, so I asked some"one who has already bought one who is living in Australia. She has not required either a database or a dictionary for hers'. I would also be interested in Bible-related programs, though I think Bible Gateway and a couple of other websites might be handy for that, and a German-english/English-German dictionary. I have made use of GoogleTranslate, at times, but a translation dictionary might be handy. Thanks. Hi Unfortunately, the items in the start-up folder are only started after the user has logged in. So putting an icon for JAWS in the start-up folder will not provide speech on the log-in screen. Now that JAWS is speaking on the log-in screen, , you could do the following to help if you have the JAWS starting problem again. 1. This should get you logged in. When you're logged in, you can always start JAWS by pressing Windows-key and type JAWS?? and press enter. ?? is the version of JAWS you want to start 17, 18, etc.. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Tom Behler Sent: Monday, February 27, 2017 10:39 To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Need Help With Two Jaws Issues That's what I believe I did last night. Re: [JAWS-Users] Major computer issue after updating Jaws
Yes, I had this issue in November of last year. You said, After going over everything, they suggested that it was most likely a Windows update that for whatever reason went bad. This is exactly what happened to my W-10 computer. However, using my laptop to do what you did, would not work either. So the only solution was to take my desktop to the local Microsoft store. They could not fix the issue either. So I allowed them to wipe the drive, reinstall W-10 from scratch, and finally I got my computer fixed. I had to customized W-10 again, I had to install all of my programs and set up my outlook accounts again. LOL. It was a pain in the butt! But I am happy to have my W-10 computer up and running again. I reached out to Microsoft Accessibility. After going over everything, they suggested that it was most likely a Windows update that for whatever reason went bad. We tried going into the update section of settings and it kept on closing on me with all sorts of error messages. The FS tech who I spoke to (Dennis I believe was his name) also mentioned this as a possibility. In any event, with my still working Windows 7 laptop, I downloaded a Windows 10 ISO, burned it to a DVD and popped it into the tower with my sighted wife following the prompts to repair keeping my files and programs intact. This did the trick. It ran, rebooted a few times and is now up and functioning as it should with all sounds and services running. Thought I'd share should anyone ever come across a similar problem. Needless to say, I'm going to keep a Win 10 recovery disk handy from now on. Currently, the only way I can start Jaws is via sighted assistance. And 2. I am using Outlook 2016 to manage both my University and personal g-mail accounts. In both accounts, Jaws is now giving me a very expanded list view in my message folders, rather than the short list view I have been accustomed to. The long message list view gives me many more details than I'd like. The abbreviated list view starts with an unread or read status notification, which is very helpful. I'm not sure how to get the shorter list view back. Currently, the folder pane is set to normal, the reading pain is set to off, and the to do bar is off. Thanks for any help anyone can provide. This is very frustrating, since I don't know what caused these sudden changes in Jaws behavior. It depends on what you are playing it with; for instance, in Windows Media, you Pause/Play with Control-P. Different players have different controls. As an example, you could go to my podcast site which is totally accessible but in Spanish, press, for instance, a link that says "Musica" and a page will open with over 400 music podcasts, each of which has a link that says :"Reproducer" or Reproduce, which will play it online with a modern player that works on Windows/Mac/Unix/Android/Iphone and has controls. Re: [JAWS-Users] troubleshooting network connection
Hello, First in your system tray on the desktop is an indicator of your network. This indicator will tell you the status of your network. Usually if you hit enter on it it will take you to a dialog where you can see things like different wireless networks and whether or not your wifi is on. Sometimes I have noticed that my computer will turn on Airplane mode seemingly on its own. In this dialog make sure airplane mode is not on and your wifi is. Also somecomputers actually have a switch on the outside that turns the wifi on and off on the computer. This switch can be activated accidentally. Also some computers have a keystroke invoked with one of the function keys that will turn your wifi off and on. Hitting this combination may have turned off your wifi. Hopefully these will help the next time it happens. Regards, Greg Wocher > On Feb 27, 2017, at 7:10 AM, leonard morriswrote: > > I'm using windows 7 and Jaws v18. I'd tried all the usual stuff like reseting the router, and turning the router on/off. The tech came out and fixed the problem in about two minutes by doing something on my laptop. I asked him to please give me a brief rundown as to what he did so I could fix the issue if it happens again. But, this guy reminded me of somebody who thinks a blind person could notpossibly understand his instructions because he all but ignored me. No big deal really. I thanked him and they left in five minutes after arriving to my house. If somebody here has an idea what he looked at to troubleshoot the network internet connection I would appreciate a quick briefing so I could hopefully fix the problem myself instead of waiting eight hours before a tech person was able to come to my house. Thanks. "Every country has an idenity, history, customs, and culture. It's a unique landscape in determining how its people live, work and play." Another method if you are still having the startup problem would be to take a JAWS icon and place it in the startup folder, IE the same place where speak drop box and things like that go to fire up on system boot. -Original Message- From: Tom Behler Sent: Sunday, February 26, 2017 10:06 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Need Help With Two Jaws Issues Mike: It turns out that, for reasons I can't explain, my computer reverted back to jaws 16, which I also have on the machine. Now that I'm back in Jaws 17, Outlook is performing as it should. I still need to trouble-shoot the log-on screen startup issue, but these steps you gave me should help. I'll keep the steps handy, and continue work on the startup screen issue in the morning. Thank you for your quick response. Today, I suddenly have been experiencing two Jaws issues. Any help with either of them would be appreciated. I am using Jaws 17 professional, and Windows 7 here. 1. When I re-boot my computer after a shut-down, Jaws no longer speaks at the log-in screen. I seem to recall that someone else had this issue the other day, but don't recall the solution. I have checked "automatically start Jaws at the log-on screen" in basic Jaws options, and also have told Jaws to always start after the log-on screen for me as the main user. Tom, I would highly recommend you're upgrading! I get much better results using 18 than I did with Jaws 17. I also checked the other option to always start Jaws for myself as the main user. Things now seem to be working properly again. Not sure how things got changed, so I'll have to monitor things to be sure they remain the same. Am actually considering upgrading to Jaws 18, since it is covered by my SMA, and since I've heard good things about the functionality of the latest update. Then Options/Basics. Go through Insert+all the checkboxes in the "Automatically Start JAWS" section. It's likely that something got unchecked. A computer tech friend of mine says he sees as many as 20 percent of Windows 10 installs go bad like this. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Mike B. I should have realized that Microsoft Accessibility had no way of trying a system restore via safe mode with all the problems you were experiencing since they didn't have a snow balls chance of logging onto your computer! That is surely 1 hell of a weird coincidence, the Windows update screw-up, & updating Jaws at the same time! Wow! Like I said, glad you finally got it sorted out. Take care. In any event, with my still working Windows 7 laptop, I downloaded a Windows 10 ISO, burned it to a DVD and popped it into the tower with my sighted wife following the prompts to repair keeping my files and programs in tact. This did the trick. It ran, rebooted a few times and is now up and functioning as it should with all sounds and services running. Thought I'd share should anyone ever come across a similar problem. Needless to say, I'm going to keep a Win 10 recovery disk handy from now on. Been using Jaws since V 3.7U and this is the first time I encountered an issue such as disruptive as this during an update. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Adrian Spratt Sent: Friday, February 24, 2017 3:37 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Major computer issue after updating Jaws Both numbers work.
