Best thing to do in that case is attempt running the test on the
computer having problems, assuming you can get it to stay up long enough
to run the test. Wow, 8088? I remember those. Actually, my first laptop
was an 8086 running I think Dos 4.10, later upgraded to Dos 5.0. Think
this was back in the late 1980's. I am pretty sure even a 15 year old
computer would trounce that 8086 any day of the week with both hands
tied behind it's back. At any rate, give the programs I mentioned a
whirl and see what happens. Oh, and the less running in the background,
the better, especially for the memory test.

If you are interested in the docking station I mentioned, here's a link
for it.

I'd test the hard drive first. Usually it's the number 1 thing that goes
out. If you have a second computer with a USB port and a docking station
for hard drives, this should be relatively straight forward. Basically
what you do is connect the hard drive to the station, connect the
station to your second computer via USB, then run tests to see if there
are problems. Based on what you've said I'm assuming you know some about
this. For thorough testing of a hard drive, you may want to look up
"Bart's Stuff Test". It's an old program but it works nicely and it's
free.

If the hard drive is sound, and you want to test memory, look up "Mem
Test HCI". There's a free and a commercial version. The free version
should do what you want.

Hi

Unfortunately, the items in the start-up folder are only started after the
user has logged in. So putting an icon for JAWS in the start-up folder will
not provide speech on the log-in screen. Now that JAWS is speaking on the
log-in screen, , you could do the following to help if you have the JAWS
starting problem again.

1. Start the computer and wait until JAWS starts talking on the log-in
screen.
2. Press tab until you get to the password for your user id, counting the
number of times you had to press tab

if JAWS again does not speak on the log-in screen, after waiting for a while
when you turn the computer on, press tab the number of times you counted,
enter your password and press enter. This should get you logged in.

When you're logged in, you can always start JAWS by pressing Windows-key and
type JAWS?? and press enter. ?? is the version of JAWS you want to start 17,
18, etc..

Another method if you are still having the startup problem would be to take
a JAWS icon and place it in the startup folder, IE the same place where
speak drop box and things like that go to fire up on system boot.

Hi Tom,

You can try the following for your 1st issue, but I can't help with your 2nd
issue:
Note: The steps below were performed running Windows 7 & JAWS versions 15
thru 18. These steps won't work with Windows 8 or 10, & why they won't is
below my steps.
For those of you that have Jaws set to start at the Windows log-in screen,
but it doesn't, this might work for you. I looked in, msconfig, & found
that JAWS Freedom Scientific wasn't at the top of the list on the Start-up
Page / Tab, so this is what I did.
1. Press, Windows key + R, to open the run dialog.
2. Type, *msconfig*, without the stars, & press enter.
3. Press, control + tab, until you get to the, Start-up Page / Tab.
4. I arrowed down the list, & unchecked any items above, JAWS Freedom
Scientific, on the Start-up Page / Tab.
Note: Only uncheck the items / programs above JAWS Freedom Scientific, &
nothing else. Pay close attention to what you uncheck because you are going
to recheck these items / programs shortly.
5. Tab to the, Okay, button, press the spacebar, & tab 1 time to, Restart, &
press enter to restart your computer.
6. Once your computer is booted up repeat steps 1 thru 3, & you will notice
that JAWS Freedom Scientific is now at the top of the list.
7. Now, arrow down the list of items / programs on the Start-up Page / Tab,
check the items / programs that you unchecked previously, & repeat step #5.
Now Jaws should start on the Windows log-in screen when your computer
starts. I did the above steps on 4 different computers, both desktop &
lattop, 'm not going to say it works everytime, but it sure works most of
the time, which I can say is a damn site better than before I followed the
above steps.
Take care.

Hi Jerry,

While performing the "Alt+Tab keystroke, are you holding the Alt key down
while tabbing through all open windows? If you press Alt+Tab and then just
let go, the default is to cycle between the last 2 windows accessed; you
must continue to hold down the Alt key while pressing the Tab key and only
when the desired application has focus do you let go of the Alt key. If you
have been using this keystroke as described above, I would be curious as to
the cause of the problem.

[JAWS-Users] windows live essentials 2012

2017-02-27 Thread Lenny McHugh
I have been using windows live mail from the essential 2012 download. I no
longer have that file and microsoft has removed it. It looks like I will be
reinstalling windows. I have my email messages and settings exported to the
live mail format. Any ideas where I can locate the 2012 version or what
email client can I use on this win 7 machine. I really hate the thought of
loosing over 200 saved emails from several groups.

I do not know if this is a JAWS issue or a Windows issue. I am using JAWS v

my email program open at the same time. However, for the past several days,

after I close the application besides JAWS, will it bring up another

[JAWS-Users] Questions relating to an upgrade from Office 2010 to Office 2016

2017-02-27 Thread Adrian Spratt
Hi. Jim's posts this afternoon have me hankering to upgrade to 2016. I'm really
hoping, though, that the upgrade will eliminate an annoying problem FS, this
list and I have been unable to solve concerning the clipboard interfering with
JAWS in Outlook. So, my questions:

Does anyone know if FS/VFO has announced they officially support Office 2016
now? The recent JAWS 18 upgrade notes suggests they do. I also have a call into
FS about this.

Second, are there big differences between 2010 and 2016, especially in the
ribbon? (I don't use the JAWS virtual ribbon.)

Third, when I upgrade, will my 2010 settings be retained? How about my JAWS
settings for Office?

As you might guess, I'm hoping for the least possible time-consuming transition.

Pause/Play with Control-P. Different players have different controls.
As an example, you could go to my podcast site which is totally accessible but

of a lesson below I am working on right now.

**Using Smart lookup.

This is a cool new feature, read below For an example of how to use Smart
lookup in Outlook 2016.

1. I highlighted the word, "bible", in an open email.

2. I pressed the Applications key.

3. I pressed Uparrow to, Smart lookup, I pressed Enter, I heard a sound.

4. I was placed in a Smart lookup, result window.

5. I ignored the message saying, press Insert+ALT+M, for Controled elements,
I pressed the Tab key instead.

6. I began Down arrowing through the results page.

7. I selected and copied the following text:

"The Bible is a collection of sacred texts or scriptures that Jews and
Christians consider to be a product of divine inspiration.

and a record of the relationship between God and humans". .

8. When you are done with the Smart lookup window, press the ALT key, then
press the ALT key a second time.

9. This places you right back into the same email, with the word you looked
up using Smart lookup.

10. You can also press ALT+Tab, Tab away and Tab back, to close the results
window for Smart lookup.

*There may be other ways, to close the Smart lookup window, the above ways,
worked fine for me.

Give it a try, and let me know what you all think about the Smart lookup.
Smiles Jim.

[JAWS-Users] Database and/or Dictionary Programs For Windows 10 with JAWS

2017-02-27 Thread Michele Thredgold
Hi everyone. I am contemplating getting an ElBraille, which, I'm told, is
ostensibly a laptop with Window 10 and JAWS, but with a Perkins-style keyboard.
I'm wondering if there are any database or dictionary programs which I might be
able to download to use on this when I purchase it. I'm currently using a
BrailleSense u2 and am unable to access the FS website to see what programs are
accessible. I do not have the address for the developers of the ElBraille, or I
would have written to them directly, so I asked some"one who has already bought
one who is living in Australia. She has not required either a database or a
dictionary for hers'.

I would also be interested in Bible-related programs, though I think Bible
Gateway and a couple of other websites might be handy for that, and a
German-english/English-German dictionary. I have made use of GoogleTranslate,
at times, but a translation dictionary might be handy.

Thanks.

Michele

*For example, using the new, Tell me what you want to do feature, just type
the word "new", press the Down-arrow key to see the list of results.

Press Enter, on one of the items to automatically have Outlook 2016,
complete that Task for you.

*Tip, pressing ALT+Q, will bring up the Tell me what you want to do search
edit box, from anywhere in Outlook 2016.

This is a fantastic feature for the blind computer user, no looking through
the ribbons, jus press ALT+Q, type what you are looking for, begin down
arrowing through the results, press Enter to have Outlook 2016,
automatically complete that task for you.

[JAWS-Users] Using the new Smart lookup in outlook 2016

2017-02-27 Thread Jim
Hi Jaws group, the new Smart lookup in Outlook 2016 works great. Read part
of a lesson below I am working on right now.

Smiles Jim.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Need Help With Two Jaws Issues

2017-02-27 Thread Mike O'Brien

?? is the version of JAWS you want to start 17,
18, etc..

You can try the following for your 1st issue, but I can't help with your 2nd

Note: The steps below were performed running Windows 7 & JAWS versions 15

below my steps.

Yes, I had this issue in November of last year. You said, After going over
everything, they suggested that it was most likely a Windows update that for
whatever reason went bad. This is exactly what happened to my W-10 computer.
However, using my laptop to do what you did, would not work either. So the
only solution was to take my desktop to the local Microsoft store. They
could not fix the issue either. So I allowed them to wipe the drive,
reinstall W-10 from scratch, and finally I got my computer fixed. I had to
customized W-10 again, I had to install all of my programs and set up my
outlook accounts again. LOL. It was a pain in the butt! But I am happy to
have my W-10 computer up and running again. Smiles...

A final follow up to this issue.
I reached out to Microsoft Accessibility. After going over everything, they
suggested that it was most likely a Windows update that for whatever reason
went bad. We tried going into the update section of settings and it kept on
closing on me with all sorts of error messages.
The FS tech who I spoke to (Dennis I believe was his name) also mentioned
this as a possibility.
In any event, with my still working Windows 7 laptop, I downloaded a Windows
10 ISO, burned it to a DVD and popped it into the tower with my sighted wife
following the prompts to repair keeping my files and programs intact.
This did the trick. It ran, rebooted a few times and is now up and
functioning as it should with all sounds and services running.
Thought I'd share should anyone ever come across a similar problem. Needless
to say, I'm going to keep a Win 10 recovery disk handy from now on.
Been using Jaws since V 3.7U and this is the first time I encountered an
issue such as disruptive as this during an update.

Update:
After restarting my computer and waiting around an hour, the desktop came
up. However, my sighted wife says that there's an error message having to do

with the audio/sound application not being loaded. Following the prompts,
though we are given the option to enable audio, this doesn't seem to occur.
Nor am I able to connect to the Internet even though this machine is
connected via an Ethernet cable.
I've checked online and even someone on one of these lists recommended to
uninstall audiodrivers in the device manager, and restart, but this doesn't
seem as though it wouldn't work for me as again, I'm somehow no longer
connected to the Internet.
I also tried accessing system restore and am presented with an error message

having to do with the audio property profile not being loaded and to check
the event log etc.
I've since tried rebooting and am again stuck on that original screen before

the desktop.
I wrote FS earlier, but who knows.

Hello, everyone.

I am using Jaws 17 professional, and Windows 7 here.

1. When I re-boot my computer after a shut-down, Jaws no longer speaks at
the log-in screen. I seem to recall that someone else had this issue the
other day, but don't recall the solution. I have checked "automatically
start Jaws at the log-on screen" in basic Jaws options, and also have told
Jaws to always start after the log-on screen for me as the main user.
Currently, the only way I can start Jaws is via sighted assistance.

And

2. I am using Outlook 2016 to manage both my University and personal g-mail
accounts. In both accounts, Jaws is now giving me a very expanded list view
in my message folders, rather than the short list view I have been
accustomed to. The long message list view gives me many more details than
I'd like. The abbreviated list view starts with an unread or read status
notification, which is very helpful. I'm not sure how to get the shorter
list view back. Currently, the folder pane is set to normal, the reading
pain is set to off, and the to do bar is off.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

This is very frustrating, since I don't know what caused these sudden
changes in Jaws behavior.

start Jjaws at the log-on screen was checked. I also checked the other

Things now seem to be working properly again.

Not sure how things got changed, so I'll have to monitor things to be sure

Am actually considering upgrading to Jaws 18, since it is covered by my SMA,

Hi Tom,

It is a good idea to keep at least 1 earlier version of Jaws installed.
Personally I have J15 thru J18 on all my computers. The trick is to always
make sure that the version of Jaws you want to use as the default is
correctly configured to do so after updating. Also, I only keep the Jaws
version icon that I use as the default on my desktop so there's no confusion
if I need to click on the desktop icon because my shortcut keystroke doesn't
work. My sure fire method for starting any version of Jaws is pinning them
to the Taskbar, & I've got to say I can't recall anytime as of yet when
using a Taskbar keystroke has failed me.

Take care.

This particular computer is a Dell Lattitude 6540 laptop, running Windows 7.

I always thought it wise to keep an earlier version of Jaws on a computer,
should the most recent version get corrupted, but now, I'm not sure that is
a good idea.

Anyway, may try to upgrade to Jaws 18 soon, and will see what happens from
there.

It depends on what you are playing it with; for instance, in Windows Media,
you Pause/Play with Control-P. Different players have different controls.
As an example, you could go to my podcast site which is totally accessible
but in Spanish, press, for instance, a link that says "Musica" and a page
will open with over 400 music podcasts, each of which has a link that says
:"Reproducer" or Reproduce, which will play it online with a modern player

Re: [JAWS-Users] troubleshooting network connection

2017-02-27 Thread Greg Wocher
Hello,
First in your system tray on the desktop is an indicator of your network. This
indicator will tell you the status of your network. Usually if you hit enter on
it it will take you to a dialog where you can see things like different
wireless networks and whether or not your wifi is on. Sometimes I have noticed
that my computer will turn on Airplane mode seemingly on its own. In this
dialog make sure airplane mode is not on and your wifi is. Also somecomputers
actually have a switch on the outside that turns the wifi on and off on the
computer. This switch can be activated accidentally. Also some computers have a
keystroke invoked with one of the function keys that will turn your wifi off
and on. Hitting this combination may have turned off your wifi. Hopefully these
will help the next time it happens.

Greg Wocher

10 ISO, burned it to a DVD and popped it into the tower with my sighted wife
following the prompts to repair keeping my files and programs in tact.
