Hello David and all:

I don't think she meant how to navigate the web in general, rather I suspect
she was referring to the Gmail page which is very troublesome to use with
Jaws. I use POP to download my Gmail messages, but I need to administer a
mailing list with googlegroups.com y I dread everytime I need to perform any
chore on it, it is very difficult with Jaws.

It seems Google uses Ajax, but I don't know what else they do that the
result is very aggravating to a Jaws user, to say the least. If anyone has
suggestions on how to improve that experience, I would be grateful.

Hi,
You can find all of the information for navigating the web by doing the
following:
Press INSERT+J to open the JAWS menu, and press ALT+H to get into the help
menu. Press R to open the web resources sub menu and arrow to surfing the
web with JAWS. Press enter on that, and you will be taken to the surfs up
web site and there are many lessons that teach you how to navigate many
different situations on the web such as forms, tables, and so on. You will
really learn a lot from this surfs up with JAWS training page and that is
the best way to get to it. Take care.

I had only 2 listed and I understand that you can't delete your default.
When I deleted the second one, it just disappeared but without an edit field
or an 'add' button or anything helpful. Also, on the IE Search Provider
page, names are used rather than URLs- Start Page is not listed and I cannot
see how to add an unlisted one or what I should type to make it happen.

Start Page has a link which says " Add to IE " which has not done anything
on this end. I have Start Page as my home page, but Control-E still brings
up Google instead.

Apparently John Fitzgerald has changed his, but I cannot figure out how.

The StartPage which is supposed to tell you how to do this is
https://startpage.com/eng/download-startpage-plugin.html?hmb=1
but for Win10 only Edge is listed not IE11- maybe it cannot be done for
IE11?

Up the proverbial creek- Cher ;)

Tab through to the apply button, then the ok.
Or, just the ok button and close the window.

Hi all,
Good suggestion. I updated to latest J17 and began Jonothon / FS cast.
Because I am not so familiar I pressed stop rather than pause. Fired it up

got distracted with other stuff and have not revisited.

I'm considering asking FS if they would mind placing a download button for
FS cast since I'm the kind of a guy who listens to pod casts at a time of my
own choosing and not really when I fire up my system first thing in the
morning.

Unless Eric reads this himself before I get around to writing that message
at least. What do some of you out there think about that suggestion?

Hi all,
Using W10, latest J16.x.
Went to external drive and opened my documents. Looked in several folders.
Use alt+f4 to close and now I have three active things when I cycle through
using alt+tab.
Jaws, My documents, health care.
My documents and health care both state message. I cannot close these
folders with alt+f4. Whenever Jaws states message it seems I cannot get
this app or folder to close. What am I doing to cause this "message" to be
spoken by Jaws?
Thanks,
Ann

I did it in the following way in win 7.
1. alt f for file.
2. tap the letter w for new.
3.lable the folder and press enter.
I tried to create a folder om my victor reader stream's memory card while
plugged into the computer tonight.
Now when I do the alt f for folder, I get the following
new window or also new windows and new process.
Not sure if this is a jaws issues or a win 10 issue or a new win 10 user

Here's hoping someone can help me learn to create a folder once again now

Right now using XP but have Windows 8 and have not upgraded to w10 or

I only have one machine connected at a time because only have one monitor

both desktops with one modem?

I don't need monitor unless I get jammed up.

Hi Neil,

I suggest instead doing a reinstall of Outlook Express, which is nice and
simple with JAWS, and if it had been working okay for her, why switch? I
would have her contact the Microsoft disability services office. They can
remote in to her computer and just handle all this. In closing, I suspect
her contacts and data should all still be there, that it is just the
software that is messed up.

Hi Mike,
Pressing Windows key+E by default, will Open What is called, Quick views in
w-10 unless you change it to, This PC.
If you follow my instructions in my previous email.
You can change this in w-10 by going to in what is now called, File Explorer
Options, the old Folder Options with some changes After you switch this to,
This PC, the old Computer icon in 7 and 8, from the default, Quick Views.
When you press Windows key+E, it will now open in This PC, the old Computer

That sounds like a good idea, it didn't cross my mind in this instance. I
have had to do that method for folks who use web mail that have com cast as
their provider since that service insists on people using their outgoing
server, thanks for the suggestion.

Hi

I can't speak for Outlook 2013, but if you have a non-Gmail account, another
way to receive messages you send to an email list using the Gmail account is
to set up your Gmail account to use the outgoing server from your non-Gmail
account. You'll have to specify the user name and password for the outgoing
non-Gmail account. I like this method better because with the recent-colon
method, you receive a copy of every email you send via the Gmail account.

The question has arisen about configuring a Gmail account to receive your
own messages posted to a mailing list. I was under the impression the fix is
still the same as it was for several years placing the word recent with a
Colon after that before the account name on the server tab.

I must admit that I don't have 2013 although with some stumbling around am
able to figure things out when needed. I tried the fix mentioned above but
the server would not accept the password for the account until I removed the
recent fix so to speak.

So what is needed is somebody with greater experience with outlook 2013 to
chime in and give me some much guidance.

It is annoying when something I know should work does not and screws up my
batting average for the lack of a better term.

What are you trying to install? If it is a new printer, scanner, etc.
the driver may not be compatible with XP. You could either abort the
installation, or let it happen, and see if the device works. If it does
not, you could then uninstall the driver.

Hello,

In Word the CTRL with enter key inserts a page break. The shift key with
enter key moves the cursor down a line without using a paragraph mark.
This

is helpful in a list style when using automatic bulleted or numbered lists
and when you don't want to insert a bullet or number when pressing enter
key. In those situations the cursor is moved to a new line and the text
starts immediately below the beginning of the text above it. This is
helpful to insert notes for the numbered or bulleted item.

Take care.

I wouldn't think of going without those paragraph marks. As I'm sure
most

of you know, one can also have blank lines with a paragraph by doing a
ctrl-enter, although I've never understood why anyone would want to do
that.

The difference is that when you use multiple presses of the enter key, you
can have stranded blank lines at the top of pages, which makes the text
look

bad. The proper way is to set the Before or After spacing in the paragraph
dialogue box. Word will automatically put extra white space between
paragraphs. The best way I find to know when a paragraph change has
occured

is to turn on paragraph marks and also use paragraph navigation commands.

As a screen reader user, I prefer to use the technique of pressing the
Enter
key twice to place a blank line between paragraphs. However, sighted
people
like to adjust the paragraph settings. This drives me crazy as the only
way
that I have been able to figure out that they used this approach was to
dig
through the paragraph settings. So when I am co-authoring a document with
a

sighted co-worker, we have to agree on which technique we are using.

I'm not sure if Insert+F will give you information about the height of a
blank line. I never thought of using that command when I was dealing with
this problem.

Annette

I'll just use J13 until morning. I tried and Jaws told me to reactivate
again.

Thanks but something is not right.
Going out so I'll wait until Monday and call FS.
Originally my hot keys were not working either. I deleted ICon on desktop
for J13 and re entered the hot key after putting ICon back on desktop,
control+Alt+H and now it works. Other versions of Jaws on my PC hot keys do
not work either.

But I'll work on it in morning.
Thanks Mike for all your help.

Also, the locking code is going to be specific to the computer that you
install the software onto. Once installed, but before activation, open the
help menu and open the About tab, that computer's locking code should be
displayed there.

Ann Marie,

Do you know your serial number? If so, you can go to www.fsactivate.com
and retrieve your activation key. Just follow the instructions on the
page, it takes a few minutes and there will be about 3 or 4 different
pages to open up during the process, but just scroll down and read what
it tells you to do. You can then download the JAWS 15 file from the
Freedom Scientific Downloads webpage. JAWS 15 will now be found under the
Past or Old versions of JAWS link. If you do not know the serial number,
I am afraid that you will only be able to use JAWS in the 40 minute demo
mode. Another option is if you have someone at home who can retrieve the
serial number off of the software packaging for you. Good luck.

I use XP and Jaws 15 latest version.
I just signed onto Gmail with my GMail email and Gmail states I am using an

I pressed JawsKey+F7 for links and only had 3 links.
Pressed escape and then basic HTML button was there; I enter and got into my

Don't know if it will work with Jaws 12.
But you can download your gmail emials into Outlook Express or Outlook.

They're saying I need an updated browser (I run Win XP SP3/JAWS 12), but I

Hi Flor,

I have Firefox as my default browser on my home computer, it was on FF
that
I first noticed the problem. Tried IE 64 bit with similar result. I
only
have Jaws 15, but have tried it using NVDA. Have tried the usual
restarts

and the like.

What I find is when I initially enter and ALT down-arrow on the Combo,
in
Firefox it states "read only edit". When I tab away and tab back, it
has an
entry. Example: Country of residence: random selection: "Albania" as I
arrow
down, it continuously repeats "Albania". If I tab away and tab back,
the

country has changed. Example: "Denmark".

This occurs with both Jaws and NVDA, although I wouldn't be used to
working
with NVDA. The difficulty is that the form I am attempting to fill in
must

be completed in a certain number of minutes or it refreshes.

I believe it may be a specific type of form, or there is some security
feature applicable as I am able to access combo boxes on other sites
without difficulty.

Regards

Louis

boxes
while at work today. Running Jaws 15, with certain sites the combo

worked as expected: booking flights for example. However, with other
sites,
there was no feed-back from the combo boxes at all.

Is it possible that certain sites could have moved to a form of flash

To Jorge, nothing is spoken by Jaws on certain sites.

Hi,
Try entering on the combobox, wait then down arrow to the combobox

want

The screen should change now.

The selected combobox is now transferring money to the other account.

On the edit box $0.00,
Type in the amount with the numpad.
Then, submit and OK/confirm.

Hi All,

I know this topic came up some weeks ago. However, in the past two
days I
experienced similar difficulties in opening combo boxes. It is on a
secure
site, a bank, where I have an account and they have recently updated
their
pages.

I am running JAWs 14, Windows 7 and have tried accessing it with
Firefox and
IE. With FF I locate the combo box, hit enter for forms mode, then
alt

down
arrow. Jaws speaks: "Read only". In IE, I have it set up so that
forms

mode
is automatic, so I hit Alt and Down Arrow. Jaws responds with a
"Blank". I
know that the fields are working as when I type Ireland into the
select
country combo, it is there. However, it is impossible to guess the
options
in the other boxes.

I have also tried NVDA without success. Any ideas?

Hi all,
Today I will test registration software called RegPoint with Jaws15 but I
will access it using go to

meeting software. I will be using IE and XP.
This software is used for management of registration and hope it is good for
our rowing club.
The coach hopes to schedule the night before what rowers and boats will be
needed So each rower will then know what boat is assigned, who will row in
boat, and time of departure from dock.
New people can sign up to register as members and pay dues online. also
accounting software is included.

  http://www.regpointsolutions.com/

Will go to meeting software work seamlessly with Jaws? I don't wish to
state RegPoint software is not compatible if indeed it is go to meeting.

Thanks I'll be back around 8:30; going to row on Halifax River.

Hi Ann,

If you go into your Gmail account on line, try looking in "all mail". You
might want to quickly check your inbox there, as well as the spam folder
and

the trash. Trash is emptied every 30 days, so if the original was sent
longer ago than that, it won't be there, and I can't guaranty that it will
be in the other folders I've suggested, but it might.

2014-06-11 Thread Ann Marie Medlar
Just a guess, you have no extension on file name. Because you are trying to
dlete files then renaming file with extension will not matter.to

rename,
Highlight file
press F2 key press end key and add extension .txt to file name and then
enter

L:\Users Mike.txt
If it works do the same for other file.
I hope it workds.

Re: [JAWS-Users] MSE Now Flagging My PC Status As "At Risk"

2014-04-08 Thread Ann Marie Medlar

Link at end of copied from CNet.
I will migrate off XP but not yet. I'll be more careful.

Microsoft no longer supports Windows XP, an OS still used by approximately
20-25% of Windows customers. That means one in four PC users must upgrade to
a more secure, supported version of Windows or risk their un-updated,
un-patched version of Windows XP catching a virus or other Internet bug. As
a rule of thumb, we always recommend upgrading your OS and then updating it
as often as possible to protect your system. If you're switching to a new
OS, read how to migrate easily from Windows XP. However, if you're a
die-hard who wants to keep a Windows XP machine, here are five tips for
keeping it running as safely and smoothly as possible until you upgrade.

1. Use updated browsers -- no more Internet Explorer

The latest version of Internet Explorer for Windows XP is IE 8, an
incredibly outdated browser. For security, it's better to use third-party
browsers like Chrome, Firefox, or Opera. All have promised to continue
Windows XP support for at least another year.

While you're installing a better browser, turn up your browser security.
Add-ons and extensions that disable JavaScript can prevent websites from
running malicious scripts. NoScript and Ghostery for Firefox or NotScripts
and ScriptSafe for Chrome can close the doors on many exploits.

2. Get rid of Flash, Java, and Adobe Reader

Although Flash, Java, and Adobe Reader were the mainstays of yesteryear's
Internet, with an unsupported OS they are gaping doors for hackers. Most
video sites like YouTube and Netflix uses HTML5, so there should be no need
for Flash. Java is still required for certain applications, but unless you
use those on a daily basis, there's no need for it to be installed. Lastly,
there are safer alternatives for Adobe Reader, such as Sumatra PDF, Nitro
PDF, and Foxit Reader.

3. Buy a full antivirus suite

Getting the protection of a full antivirus suite isn't a bad idea,
especially when it costs much less than upgrading to a new system.
Kaspersky, Trend Micro, F-Secure, and Norton are all good calls. You want
something heavy duty with its own firewall for the best protection. Then get
a second opinion from other scanners just to be on the safe side. The new
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is good utility to run as a second line of
defense. (The premium version is going for $20 this week)

4. Go offline or limit your account access

The surest way to stay safe is to stay off the Internet. If your Windows XP
machine's uses don't require an Internet connection (such as home theater,
playing music, or games), then disconnect. Otherwise use the limited account
privilege setting in the User Control Panel. Stay off the admin account
unless you need to update, patch, or install something. Account limitation
can be a roadblock for attackers.

5. Remove unnecessary clutter

Any programs you're not using can be a risk now that you're on an outdated
OS. Keep baggage to the bare minimum by uninstalling apps you don't need.
IObit, Revo, and Advanced Uninstaller can help. Then update whatever
applications remain. Just because Microsoft stopped supporting Windows XP
doesn't mean that software developers are dropping it, too. A majority of
publishers still offer updates to their software at least for another year.

End of an era

Even though Windows XP gets no more Microsoft love, your functioning PC did
not suddenly became useless. If you practice good security and know the
limitation of the legacy OS, you can stretch out your system's life for a
little while longer. However, we do recommend that you not keep sensitive
data or perform essential tasks on your XP machine. While "unsupported"
doesn't mean automatic hacking, there will be fewer people reporting
exploits.

Nope. Using the JAWS cursor to read the infornation on the NSE History
tab, there is a message at the top of the page that myPC status is
potentially unprotected, but no expanation as to why. As I mentioned
previously, I suspect that MS is deliberately flagging XP computers as
unprotected, when, in fact, this is not actually the case, to scare XP
users into upgrading to Windows 8 even though support for the XP version
of MSE will continue through July, 2015. MS has done a splendid job of
convincing the mainstream media that XP computers will all be rendered
into useless paperweights by the nasty boys of cyberspace after support
for XP ends on Tuesday. Remember all the doomsayers who predicted that
the world as we know it would end on January, 1,2000, thanks to the
so-called Y2K problem? How did that work out?

Hi Gerald,

I'm confused, when you go to your system tray with the Jaws Key+F11, then
go to the PC Potentially Unprotected, then left double click on the item,
you should be able to use your Jaws cursor to see why your PC is
potentially unprotected.

Is this not the case?

Sorry, I've just never seen this before that one couldn't find out why
their PC was potentially unprotected.

That used to be the case, but not anymore. Running a scan does not get
rid
of the potentially unprotected message in the System Tray. The fact that
I
began getting this message yesterday, just five days before support for
XP
ends seems to be more than just a coincidence. Maybe it's a warning from
MS
that although support for MSE will continue until July 2015, a computer
may
still be potentially unprotected as long as it keep running XP. So are
any

other XP users on this list who also use MSE getting this potentially
unprotected message, too?

Hi gang. For the past two days, the Microsoft Security Essentials icon
in
the System Tray of my XP computer has been showing "PC Status
Potentially

Unprotected". Using the JAWS cursor to read the History tab, I notice
that there are options labeled "remove" and "remove all" at the bottom
of
the page , presumably to remove harmful items that have been
quarantined,
but when I attempt to click on either of these options with the left
mouse
button, nothing happens, and my PC status remains potentially

Neither running a full scan nor rebooting my computer changes the

potentially unprotected to protected? Thanks for any help.

2013-07-16 Thread Ann Marie Medlar

Hi all,
I just called Microsoft help line for people with disabilities at
1 800 936 5900
The event viewer shows error all over your computer. I asked if they could
have penetrated my computer and he said no.
Most likely they were looking for me to buy their software to fix all my
fatal and minimum problems on my PC.

I did google it and it states a scam.
I am surprised that they would target me because I am using XP.
I don't think they will call again. Thanks for all your responses.
If they call again, I'll ask for her phone number and I will call her back.
Click most likely will be the answer.

I did run MSE and Malware Bytes and no problems.
Have a great day.

+ same thing happened to me a while ago. I told this before. They called me
one day and said I had to buy this package from them because my computer
was going to crash any time. I told them I had four computers in this house
and that I didn't have the authority to do that. They called three or four
more times and then stopped. I think it was a big scam to get information.
They said I could buy a package for each computer and fix them all. After
about five days they stopped calling me.

It is one of the options one checks or unchecks during installation.

Let her uninstall and reinstall Kurzweil, checking the relevant option.

Kurzweil's installation speaks and is very accessible, she just needs to
listen when to press enter, or escape at the relevant prompts during
installation.

with windows 7 and wlm
write your message and use
alt i
then I, A
now shift tab twice for the list of documents and use the first letter if
known or your arrows and enter on the document you wish to attach

***
another way is go to the list of documents and
use the application key and up arrow to send to sub menu and right arrow
now down arrow to mail recipient and enter
This is the reverse way as you start where the attachment is and it brings
you to the email recipient

That's because, Jaws changed that key combo because windows-C is the key
that brings up the chamrs in Win 8. The correct command to append to the
clipboard for Jaws 14 and up is windows-jaws-c.

The Jaws key is either the insert or Caps Loc if you have laptop keypad
layout.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

Unsure if asked in past but when I copy to clipboard all is fine. Then I
wish to append to clipboard windowsKey+c and append does not work in
latest of Jaws 14 build.
Did they change the keyboard command? Do I have the correct keyboard
combo?

You should be able to do it from within IE. When you go into IE, are you
being prompted to make it the default? I think there is a checkbox for
this somewhere within tools options which I always keep checked so I can
be alerted, but unfortunately I can't remember just where it is. Hope
this helps a bit.

It has always been my experience that opening any browser that was not
currently the default would produce a dialogue box asking if you
wanted it to become the default browser. Have you opened IE to see if
this happens?

I'd complete the data entry in Excel, then format the entire sheet by making
all 3 columns to be the same width as the longest entry. Control A to select
the entire sheet; Alt to go to the ribbon; down arrow to cells; right arrow
into the submenu; down arrow and press enter on format; down arrow past
column width, to auto fit column width, and press enter). Then copy and
paste the 3 columns and all your rows that have data into a Word document. I
don't think you need to merge columns, unless I'm misunderstanding what
you're trying to do.

Hi Ann Marie,
What I'd do is start with Excel, put in your column headers, then copy and
paste the 3 columns and number of rows you want into a Word document. There
may be a better way, but that's how I create tables.

No software required and it is quite free if you keep your files under 250

Thanks I tried Audacity and had some problems with understanding software.
I tried to open with control+o but needed to import with raw I think. Then
I tried to convert to MP3 then sort of got lost.
The free tool from Maniac is easy. Copy files into input folder and then
specify folder for output with converted MP3 songs. Then press F5 to
convert. I think I had to arrow around some but real easy. All keyboard
commands I found in file menu.
But thanks for your suggestion. I use GoldWave as well. I did download
Audacity. On Jaws user list there is some documentation but Maniac tool
seems the simplest which is free.
