They do! but, in all honesty: I can't say that I was overly impressed. To date, I haven't found anything that matches the purity of Eloquence. Certainly, it does make errors in pronunciation occasionally, but such occasions are, surprisingly, rare, and can usually be fixed by a bit of imaginative fonetic tinkering in the Jaws dictionary. I ask this as a lot of voices say from NEXTUP.com only work with their own TTS like software and don't allow the freedom of using those voices independently with JFW. [JAWS-Users] An Outlook Express question
One has to limit one's subscription list, so I do not belong to blind computering. All my self-generated folders in OE6 have disappeared. They were there a few days ago, but now all I have are the default folders of in and out boxes, sent, draft and deleted items. I went to the recycle bin and I do see what appears to be those lost folders there with a .bak extension. The application/context key accompanied by the letter e, the usual keystroke for restoring files or folders to their source root doesn't work, and there seems to be nothing in the view menu of OE6 that will fix the problem. The computer asks me from time to time if I would like them to be compacted? If I ignore the question, I am asked it every time I shut the computer down, so, merely to shut the damned thing up, I say "yes". Could these compacted folders be all the ones I see in the recycle bin with the .bak suffix? and if so, how can I read them and get them into a folder[s where they will be protected from kidnapping? Phil! It depends on how much information you have about the email for which you are searching. What I do is to: go to the folder in which it is: usually the deleted items folder. If you have set it to empty after each session, Mate: you have shot yourself in the foot! If the folder is still bulging: press ctrl shift f and you will be presented with a number of choices. from, to, subject, and so on. In subject, it doesn't matter if you don't remember the entire subject line, just a word is sufficient, and press enter. Re: [JAWS-Users] I am getting far more information than I want
In the end, the resolution of the over enthusiastic reading of just about everything on the screen was very simple. In all the years that I ran 98, I * never installed an update, and therefore, knew very little about the things. This morning, I was taking a constitutional through settings and came to automatic updates. Now, a friend of mine had spoken of these mysterious pieces of software and said that they were, more often, beneficial rather than harmful. I took a look at it and saw that it was set to download updates at 3am. Good grief! my computer is away with the fairies in the land of Nod at that unearthly hour of the morning, so I set it for midday. 12pm came and I was in the middle of writing an unsaved letter to my sister, when, suddenly, the computer switched itself off. Bugger! what had I done to cause this calamity? The computer then came back on the air, and explained that a critical update had been installed and for it to take effect, a reboot had been necessary. OK! I lost the letter, but, that could be rewritten, but OH JOY! OH WONDER! all the reading problems had disappeared. Re: [JAWS-Users] Am getting far more information than I want
I just can't understand Jaws at all. I am completely at a loss! In my last letter, I said that checking and saving highlighted text in the configuration manager had made no difference at all, and neither had it. I have just come back to the computer and gone back to the typing echo page as I had been looking for it previously and had been unable to find it. I changed typing echo to words, and that was all I did. I opened the first letter in my message list and what do you know: the reading of the menu/toolbar has vanished, and everything is looking just hunky-dory! David! I had discovered that I stayed in OE to work the insert s that you mentioned, so I went down to highlighted, but it has changed nothing. I will say that I have fixed another problem by accident, and that was that Jaws was only reading the first couple of paras of the email and then stopped. I went to tools--options--read, and the only thing that I could think of changing was "read in plain text" which I changed to "read in html", and VOILA ! when I came back to the message list, they were being read in their entirety. I must admit that Jaws has got a little carried away with itself as it is now reading portions of the message twice, but at least it is reading. I still cannot convince Jaws that I don't want it to read the menu or tool bar or whatever it is reading, but that is a minor problem with which I can put up. Re: [JAWS-Users] OE collapsed beside message
I don't think that having a topic * collapsed is a * problem. No indeed: It is a great boon. If your messages are grouped into "conversation" as the mark collapsed indicates, if you don't want to read that string, you can delete the entire conversation with one press of the delete key. However, if you do want to expand the conversation, you can do so by pressing the right arrow key. Jewel - From: "Mike & Barbara" To: Sent: Friday, March 27, 2009 8:13 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] OE collapsed beside message Hi Ann Marie, To turn collapsed messages off do the following. 1. Alt + V for the view menu. 2. Press enter on current view or press the letter "V". 3. Arrow up to " Group messages by conversation ", if this box is checked press enter to uncheck it. Once you have unchecked this box, this should stop your messages from collapsing. I hope this will fix your problem. Also, pressing enter on that box will take you out of the menues. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Avast
Hi Christy! I can't understand what your problem can be when you say that the avast installer is not, really, friendly! I am something of a computer clutz and even to me, installation was a breeze! If it is the registration key that is bothering you: just email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] telling them that you are blind, where you live and that you would appreciate some help with the registration key. Within a day or two, someone will contact you from avast giving you your key which you then enter in the registration box of avast. From memory, I think that box is under "about" in the avast contents menu. You have 60 days evaluation so with or without registration, avast will keep your computer virus free for that time. Re: [JAWS-Users] Query" Free rice
Thanks Flor! I will try your suggestions. It will not be long before I say good bye to the dear old dinosaur: 98 and make the leap to XP Home. My donated grain count on free rice is 9. Time permitting, I try to do 1000 grains a day. Until a while back, the best vocab level you could achieve, no matter how many words you got right was 50, but that level has been raised now, but so has the range of words and their difficulty and obscurity. My best level, to date, is 54, but one mistake and you slip back a level, and, it takes more than one correct word to regain it. I enjoy pitting my wits against the site. I spoke of jaws making a pretty good fist of pronunciation, with not many exceptions, but just wait until the site gives you the french word for an armchair! I should switch language to french and see what it makes of the pronunciation of fauteuil then! (It is a 'clickable graphic'. In short, perhaps not a standard clickable link as recognized by earlier versions of JAWS. You could however try turning on all graphics using the insert+5 keys, that number 5, to attempt to enable it?. (There was also a graphics verbosity - insert-v, the down-arrow or the letter g.) With conntemporary versions of JAWS, when you hit left-mouse once on the 'clickable graphic pronounce', The word is spoken in a human voice. Re: [JAWS-Users] Finding Sounds For Your Computer
Several years ago, I downloaded a 15 day free trial version of find sounds, and what do you know, they forgot about me and I continued to download sounds, free of charge, from the site for a year or more. I, eventually, had over 600 sounds, and then my hard drive died and, of course, took all my sounds and everything else with it to the grave! When I was, once again, in the land of the living, and went to find sounds, the 15 day free trial had been cancelled. I couldn't really complain! I had had a great time while it lasted. I now have downloaded the latest 15 day free trial v2.2, but I cannot get it to work. It is different to the one I knew in that there is a box that says: "effects: 1 of 3", "instruments: 2 of 3" and "other: 3 of 3". I open any one of the three with the right arrow key, but that is where I get stuck. Pressing the enter key or tad down just results in a ding. operating system: 98SE and JFW4.51. Re: [JAWS-Users] Strange reading problem
I did copy the link to word and did a search and replace for hidden hyphen, but I was told that a search could not locate the symbol Is jaws reading pounds to you? I wrote * symbol. Good grief! it has done it again. Let me try spacing the word out and see if that gets past the crazy animal! s y m b o l HAA HAA!Take that! I am smarter than you! Re: [JAWS-Users] Strange reading problem
This broken reading started about 6 months ago. Before then, there was no problem at all. As it is a jaws anomaly, I will write to freedom scientific for help. Something may come from that. Re: [JAWS-Users] Query How to fix strange reading
I wrote in some time ago telling of how Jaws read news items on the world science site in a very odd manner. Words of one or two syllables were ok, but longer than that, Jaws attempted to break them up into individual syllables. Flor Lynch asked for the url, and I have not, until now, been able to get back to the computer with that information. It is: www.world-science.net. [JAWS-Users] Query How to fix strange reading
For the past few months, Jaws reading of news items on the World Science site has been most peculiar. It reads 50% of the words just fine, but the rest it breaks up into syllables. I am getting quite good at interpretting what it is reading, but I would much rather have the article read in plain english, not a strange version of it. There was a question the other day on this list re hidden hyphens. I didn't know if these were being inserted as, if I copy the article to MsWord, and look at the word in detail, I am not told that there is a hidden hyphen. Nevertheless, I went through search and replace as if they were there, but the program said that the search item could not be found. Is there anyone else on the list who gets the world science newsletter and has the same problem, and if so, how did you fix it? My operating details are: IE6: 98Se: JFW4.51.
