bring the jaws cursor to that cell also.
When I get to step 2 and right click the cell, my options are:

Hi Roj,
To get JAWS to read column row titles, do the following.
1. Click on the cell that intersects the title row and column. In most cases
cell A1.
2. Right click and select Define Name
3. Type Title.. without the quotes in the name field. It is important to type
the 2 dots after Title. As the first dot defines the row and the second dot
defines the column used.
4. Tab until you hear OK and press Enter.
5. Save your worksheet by hitting Ctrl + S.
The procedure only works if you can edit and save the worksheet you are reading.

I have never been able to get the procedure currently written in the tutorial

Set the cursor on the cell that is common to the row and column that you want.
Hold down the alt, jaws key and control key and press C for column and R for
row. It is like playing a piano but it works.

Scorpio, I do not understand how this new Yahoo mail is completely accessible.
Others on this list have also said they are having trouble, so it's not just
me. My problem with all this is that I am an average computer user, and many of
you on this list are much more technically savvy than I will ever be. I do not
want to have to jump through seventeen hoops, stand on my head and do whatever
else just to read my emaiol. Sighted people don't have to go through all these
changes to do so. I couldn't figure out how to get the Yahoo mail to do
absolutely anything. So even with my several years of knowledge with computers
and jaws it isn't enough. To me that is too complicated. Thanks to all for the
mobile yahoo site. I tried it and I can use it just fine. That is weird to me,
but I won't question it. (smile) Judy Tallie

Hi Judy,

The reason Yahoo doesn't do anything about it is because it is 100%
accessible. The only problem is that people aren't taking the time to learn
it, but from what I can tell, it is completely accessible with Jaws.

Having said that though, you can use their mobile version at the following
link:

http://m.yahoo.com/w/ygo-mail%3B_ylt=A0KjqcaaV.dRJWsANg8p89w4?.intl=CA.lang=en-ca

Unfortunately, you're only left with a list of 10 messages you can view at a
time, and you have to enter on the folders link to view the rest of your
folders, such as the drafts, sent items and spam folder, if you have it
activated, but otherwise, it's just as accessible as the other version you're
so used to seeing.

Once you're finished checking the ten showing messages, enter on the older
messages link, and you'll get ten more, and so on until you see all your
messages.

I know, it's a pain in the butt, but there's really no one we can blame for
thise, save for Yahoo themselves, but I don't even think they can be blamed,
since they're giving the majority of people what they asked for.

My wife has nothing but good things to say about the new Yahoo interface, but
she's sighted, and so doesn't experience the same problems we do.

In any case, hope the above information helps you.

The file is definitely in documents under libraries.

I launch OB. Press alt-F/ Press enter on open. Paste in the name of
the file . Tab over to the combo box for look in. Get to libraries and

press enter on open. I can't get it to go below libraries.

I've spent hours on this and am getting very frustrated. I'm still not
good with Win 7 and only use Open Book when I have a .pdf file to deal

Hi Folks,

I'm not sure if this is affecting everyone, but Yahoo Mail, in
particular, Rogers Yahoo has begun using app mode on their website so
that you must negotiate various app modules on the webpage rather than
HTML.

Does anyone know of any tricks to using this sort of configuration, or
even how to navigate through it in a quick manner?

One of the reasons I check my webmail is because I have to check my spam
folder every now and again, and I would hate to shut that feature off
with the sheer number of e-mails I get per day.

In any case, the links aren't anywhere near what a person is used to
entering on. Where the spam and trash folders used to have separate
links to empty all the messages from the respective folders, now they
seem to be merged onto one link so that you don't know what you're
entering on.

I have to deal with this on two machines, a Windows XP and Windows 7
machine using Jaws 12, latest build on both, and Internet Explorer 8,
again, the latest build.

Any tips on this phenomenon would be greatly appreciated.

Hello list,

I'm trying to work with some Excel spread sheets such as for merchandise
quotes, purchase order and invoices where certain text like item
description, delivery address etc can be 1, 2, or x lines. Because of
this,
I'm having trouble getting the text to properly fit in the cells as I
then
have to convert it to a PDF file and the whole template will get thrown
off.
Does anyone know or can they direct me where one can manually do this
and
more importantly, figure out how to adjust the cell/row/column size
accordingly and have Jaws give me the necessary feedback so I know that
it
looks right? I've tried the autofit option in the menus, but the
feedback
from my sighted wife is that it just makes the cell text even smaller
and
makes it harder to read if not impossible. Not all text is equal so it's
not
like I can use a set peramitor. I've checked the Jaws Excel help
settings
and it's more to do with with reading titles and cell coordinates.
That's
fine, but not exactly what I'm looking for.

I'm using JFW 11. I do have the latest JFW 12 from this past May, but as
others have discussed on this and more lists, my experiences with Jaws
12
were too problematic to continue using it. My Excel is the 2003 edition.

Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

Hi All.

I have an interesting question. I've tried the file manager listed on
the programs page but it didn't quite do what i wanted it to do. what
i'm looking for is a simple way of marking multiple files in a list
individually then moving them to a folder. lets say i have 100 files
and i want to mark 25 files individually and they're not in order. i
can't use standard keyboard shortcuts such as shift down/up arrow as
that would select the files going down/upwards in the list. so my
question is simply is there an easy way of marking a number of specific
files in a list? an example of this would be if in an ideal world each
file was a check box and i'd just tick the ones i wanted to copy by
pressing space then copy them all at the end. I hope that all makes
sense and hope that someone can offer a program/sollution.

Many thanks,

Mo.

folks,
using JAWS, and who must be very fast on their Keyboards, and will need
to
use numbers a lot during a telephone conversation, i.e., Customer
Services,

Do those of you who fall into these categories for employment use the
Number Row to input numbers while speed typing to keep up with a
person on
the telephone,
Or
Do you hit your Num Locks Key, and use you or number pad?

I myself would feel worried about using my Num Pad, as I often use the

Num Pad for JAWS or Windows commands, even routing PC to JAWS.
And I might forget or might get tired of turning it on and off all the
time!
Although I must say, I input numbers much faster using the Num Pad!

Thanks for any comments.

Ok, so what if you are wanting the following text to be red, instead of
changing it after the fact? I should try that apps key route I keep
doing it
the long and frustrating way.

Thankyou.

Hello:

Does anyone ever change the color of their text using word 07? I am
having
one heck of a time doing this.

The problem I am having is for example, i select red and when I go back
and
check the color it says brown!

For practical reasons, I am trying to create a document with blue, red
and
white text? or green.

If someone can make sense of this I would appreciate it.

Thankyou!

Mike,

You might check the state of the scroll lock key. On a standard
keyboard it is between the print screen and pause break keys. Pressing
the key twice quickly will change the state and JAWS will tell you the
new state.

Hope this helps.

Unless I am doing something wrong, neither f6 nor alt-d does what I
expect. Firstly, if I turn on keyboard help, neither f6 nor alt-d claim

to do anything. Secondly, when in internet explorer if I go to a page,
then hit alt-d or f6, it says, address edit. I do not see a URL at
that point. If I then hit control-c it says nothing is selected. If
I
go to notepad and hit control-v, nothing is copied.

Also, if I look in the keyboard manager under either default or internet

explorer, neither alt-d nor f6 are defined as key strokes.

Insert a says that is what it does, but it doesn't. It only reads
the URL,

Good morning,

My husband bought me a Toshiba netbook. There seems to be a lot of
different
software loaded on this machine and Jaws 12 does not want to read some
of
the dialogue boxes to me. He seems to run sluggish at times and times he
does not talk at all. Any suggestions. Someone mentioned scripts.

Hello all,

Okay, here's where I'm at. I determined that I indeed have IE 8
running, not compatible with JFW7. How do I downgrade to an earlier
version? Sorry, as I know that this has been discussed here

 Greeting all,

For those of you who have installed the first public beta of JAWS 12
in
early September, you should be alerted of an update when you restart
it
today. Below, I have included the list of changes we have made and we
are continuing work now as we work towards another update in early
October. Thanks to all of you who have provided feedback and we look
forward to hearing move in the coming weeks.

 Regards,

 Freedom Scientific

New Features added in second Public Beta, JAWS 12.0.451

The following features have been added to the latest JAWS 12 public
beta
 release.

 Reading HTML Tables

The default setting for reading HTML table titles has changed so that
JAWS now conforms to industry defined HTML standards by only reading
table headers that are properly marked up. You can see this when using
the CTRL+ALT+ARROW Keys to move through an HTML table.

While the default setting is now set to Only Marked Headers, you can
continue to use earlier functionality for reading HTML tables if you
are
more comfortable with those settings. To change settings, press
INSERT+V
to open JAWS options, and then press T to move to the Table Titles
Announce option. Next, press SPACEBAR to cycle through and select a
new
setting, and then ENTER to save the change.

Remember that you can always use Personalized Settings
(INSERT+SHIFT+V)
to customize how JAWS reads table column and row headers on any given
Web site, without modifying how JAWS reads table headers on other Web
 sites.

For more information about reading HTML tables, visit the Tables
section
 of Freedom Scientific's Surf's Up
 http://www.freedomscientific.com/../Training/Surfs-Up/Tables.htm .

NCAA Football Lookup Source in Research It

NCAA Football is a new addition to Research It. Use it to search for
the
schedules or results of your favorite college football teams. Because
of
the number of college teams, there are several ways to get search
 results.

One way is to open Research It (INSERT+SPACEBAR, R), type a date using
the mm/dd/ date format, and then select NCAA Football. This shows
a
full list of games scheduled or played during that week. Another is to
leave the search field blank and see schedules or results for the
current week. The last way is to search for your favorite college
teams
by typing team names separated by a semicolon. This shows the current
week's schedules or results for those schools. For example, type
Florida; Texas; California to view results for teams with Florida,
Texas, or California in their names.

Search results display in the Virtual Viewer as a link so that you can
open a Web browser and read a recap of past games or a preview of
future
games. Press CTRL+DOWN ARROW to move between the dates displayed for
the
 week.

Update to NBA Scores and NHL Scores

The NBA Scores and NHL Scores lookup sources in Research It have been
expanded and now provide links to box scores and game summaries. Each
game listed in the Virtual Viewer is now a link. Select any link to
launch your Web browser and read a recap and statistics of past games,
or a preview of future games.

 Improvements with Adobe Flash

JAWS can now announce buttons and other items that did not work
correctly on some Flash Web sites. Examples of Web sites that now
function properly are Audible.com and Dominos.ca.

Enhancements in JAWS 12.0.451 (September 2010)

The following is a list of improvements made between this release and
 the initial public beta release.

 JAWS

 * Resolved a customer reported issue where it was possible to pan
out of the virtual buffer while reading with braille in the JAWS help
 file.
 * Resolved an issue in the PlaceMarkers dialog

What I am trying to read is not a link. It is a cartoon strip, a
graphic which an artist friend of mine has described for blind folks.
He has to work within the parameters of the hosting company right
now. Basically it is a balloon that pops up when the mouse pointer is
over the graphic. I can read it if I find the graphic, route the Jaws
cursor to the PC cursor, arrow up once and down again and it will
read the first line of the balloon and that is it. If at that point I
use INSERT B to read a dialog box, it will read the entire thing but
not before reading everything on the screen first. So I'm looking how
I can read it with one hot key. If not he'll be trying something
different down the road to make it accessible. His link is:

http://tinyurl.com/2bmuras

Press G until you hear graphic small town values and then the name
of that day's cartoon.

Pl pardon me if this is off topic from JAWS. Using Windows 7, JAWS11.
Streaming video (with sound) online via Windows Media Player on my PC.
I'd like to record the video and audio of the stream using some third
party screen recorder software that is accessible to use with JAWS11.
Secondly, I recently tried 'total Screen Recorder' and it only had the
option of recording audio via my PC's microphone line in. So the
software I'm looking for must record off the sound card i.e. the audio
that is playing through my laptop speakers.

Would you pl recommend one to me that satisfies both the above
criteria?.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Yahoo Groups Page Won't Load Properly With Firefox

I'm not sure whether this probelm is JAWS related or not, but here
goes.
When I attempt to access www.groups.yahoo.com using Firefox 3.6.8 with

JAWS 9, Jaws announces the number of headings, links etc. as the page
is
loading, but once the page has completely loaded, all the objects on it

seem to vanish and the only thing JAWS recognizes is the title; all
the
headings, links buttons and edit fields are gone. Then when I attempt
to
return to my Google home page, it, too, is devoid of any headings,
links
or edit fields. The only way to restore my home page to normal is to
close Firefox and restart it. But when I try to access the Yahoo page

again, the same thing happens: the page loads but all of its objects
seem
to disappear. I do not encounter this problem with IE 8, nor with any

other web sites. This problem seems to be unique to Yahoo.com. Does
anyone have a clue why this page won't load properly with Firefox?
Any
 feedback appreciated.

 Gerald

Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel formula

2010-05-24 Thread Potter, Kurtis
Add a $ sign to the formula.
Basically the cell that you do not want to change needs a $ sign before
the column and row coordinates. Example if your data is in a2, then
your formula would show A2 as $a$2.

Good morning,

Hopefully someone more experienced with Excel than I can
answer this. I am building a worksheet in order to test out
several different scenarios. Instead of entering the data in
each sell I need for the formulas, I have put the
information I want to reference in a separate cell at the
top of the sheet. This way I can simply reference the cell
in my formulas and not have to reenter the specifics in each
formula while testing with different numbers. The problem
I'm experiencing is when inserting or deleting rows Excel
is updating my formulas which then ends up referencing the
incorrect cell. Most times in Excel the automatic updating
of cell information is a help but not in this case. how can
one enter a cell reference in a formula and have it stay
fixed?

thanks
Al

 Hi Joann;

I am sorry. I didn't notice that you said that you are using Jaws 10

 at
the top of your message. I guess I should wake the hell up before
 listening
to Jaws! LOL Anyway, in IE8, I have in the view menu / tool bars,
only
these tool bars checked; menu bar, status bar, lock the tool bars.
I
don't use tab browsing, so that is disabled. I don't browse the
Internet
much at all and so I have very few issues with IE8. Again, my
apologies

Mike and others, I do use Jaws 10 or 11 most of the time, but as an
experiment I have used Jaws 8 to see if it worked better. It is
 definitely
more limited than 10 or 11 in many areas. But my concern was that,
even
when using a newer Jaws, the pages show no links or text when going
past
 the
home split button. I'll stay away from 8 since it doesn't read
menus,
 but
would like to know how to make 10 and 11 read the links on the page
 instead
of seeing it blank. I'm trying to see if it's a Jaws issue and if
either
 a
tool bar needs to be checked or if something in HTML options isn't
set
correctly. I know others have had trouble getting pages to come up
and
would be interested in how they resolved the issue. Thanks.

 You

I'm using Jaws 10 and 11 with XP Home, and it seems that either of
 these
   2
Jaws versions has not been working when using I.E. 8. What I wish
I
 could
do is get rid of the stuff on the left side of the page--that Web
 address
and home split button you see. Because that actually seems to be
where
   the
problem lies--plus it is annoying because you can't just go to
links
 like
you could in I.E. 6. What seems to happen is, it tells you you're
on
 the
right page, but going past that home split thing it shows nothing.
I
sometimes see links if I turn off and on the virtual cursor, or if
I
 hit
   F5
to refresh. But often I can't get the links and text bodies of the
 pages
   to
show up. I know it went to the right page but something is either
   blocking
it or something is maybe set wrong in config. Now the odd thing
is,
   usually
   when using my special version of Jaws 8 this doesn't happen;
however I
   can't
use Jaws 8 to find a favorite because hitting alt and the letter a
it
doesn't read the list of favorites. So if anyone can help resolve
 these
   issues would appreciate it.

Also does F.S. recommend anything regarding tool bars? Should
they be
locked, and which ones would one use when browsing with Jaws? I
just
wondered if that had any difference in my not getting links to come
up.

Thanks.

Is there a JAWS hotkey for quickly moving to the next or previous page

 a
 multiple-page website?
At work I need to move between pages and don't find it efficient to
deal
with the next or previous page links.
I tried the alt left arrow or right arrow, but that didn't work.
If there isn't such a hotkey, I humbly suggest such an animal.

Yes, and to keep the FB page a little cleaner, when you are finished
 typing
your comment at the top of the email, if you do a control shift end
at
 the

 that
 it
don't repost all that stuff to the web site.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your response. I've done that and I'm still unsuccessful.

I don't know another way to explain it, but I'll try to get this
resolved.

Thanks again.

Hi Debbie, I am not sure if I am understanding your problem. But
maybe
you had Jaws running in the System tray before. If so Just go to Jaws

options and in the basics menu just check the box to have Jaws run
in
the System Tray. If that is not the problem I will try to think
again.

 Subject: [JAWS-Users] A question about Jaws 9.0

 Hi all,

I'm currently using Jaws 9.0 and every time I press alt tab, it takes
me
 to the Jaws option.

When I had 7.0, I was able to eliminate this problem, but I don't
 remember what I did.

 Can anyone help?

 Thanks in advance.

[JAWS-Users] Activation problem

2009-04-06 Thread Potter, Kurtis
Hi everyone,

I was upgraded to JAWS 10 at work today. I am having trouble with the
activation. I have tried doing the Internet activation and received the
message that it worked, but JAWS is still in 40 minute mode. I then
went to fsactivate.com and put in my authorization number and locking
code to get my authorization number. I entered this into JAWS and again
was told my authorization was successful. JAWS is still in 40 minute
mode. I restarted my computer and tried a second time. I have
administration rights.
I, in the past, have had no problems activating JAWS. does anyone have
any ideas?

Thanks,
Kurt
