Dear Chris,
There is a real simple, very small program completely JAWS friendly I use
called:

Day By Day
It does exactly what you said you wanted to know.
It is a calendar type program.

Perhaps some on this list are using it, as I sent it around to many folks

If you want it let me know and I shall send it to you.

Since this is a brand new computer, I would attempt to
remove all of the
bloated software included by the manufacturor. Most are
paid to include
trial versions from other companies. Most of these, like
Norton, you
could not pay me to use. They also install a ton of
accessory and extra
software for supporting their hardware. Some run in the
background and
are meant to keep your drivers from them up-to-date.
Unfortunately, I
have found all software from manufacturers not usable! I
usually
attempt once. I remove or disable almost all of their
software.

with almost a

with five times less memory on the hard drive left,

it's more than a

This is a hard question. Everything installed on a new computer that is
not from Microsoft is suspect in my view! After buying a few computers,
you can be fairly sure of some. Others, I try to determine what their

Hi Riana Vicky,

Were your computers working fine then all of sudden the

haven't

weird

occurrences

   Dear Listers,

I tend to differ with the suggestions made, although I

unfortunately

don't have a solution, but I'm experiencing the same

annoying issue,

although the delay is not such that I can't live with

it,

approximately
two seconds, on a brand new quad cor processor pc with

four gig of

ram,
   under
windows 7 64 bit, with only nod32 and outlook running,

with almost a

terabyte free memory on the hard drive, while on my

notebook, running

the same version, latest of jaws, also with 4 gig ram

but only a duel

cor processor, also windows 7 64 bit, running only

outlook and Nod32,

with five times less memory on the hard drive left,

it's more than a

   second faster.

Hey Gang,
Here is a little program that goes on the root of a thumb drive or your
external drive.
All you have to do is copy the .exe to the main folder, or the root of
whatever you want to remove.
When you get done using your thumb drive press enter on eject and it
closes

everything down, so you can remove it safely.
I will leave it in my dropbox until Friday morning, and then it will be
deleted.
Yes David it is a free share.
Oh, in that folder there is a help txt file, but all you need to copy is
the

eject.exe file.

Daily Tip:
Manage Your Bookmarks

It may seem like common sense to bookmark a Web page that you visit
regularly. But what about organizing your bookmarks? Organizing your
bookmarks can help you save time and potential frustration over lost
links. Not sure where to start? In Internet Explorer, click the down arrow
next to the Add To Favorites icon and select Organize Favorites. Click the
New Folder button at the bottom left of the pop-up box. You can create as
many folders as you want. Here are some folder name suggestions to help
you get organized: Business (online banking, stocks, etc.), Entertainment
(your favorite fun sites), Travel (your travel wish list or plans),
Miscellaneous (weather, news, etc.) You can also create subfolders in any
of your original folders; simply click the folder in which you want to add
a subfolder and click New Folder.

Hi Vicky,
I haven't done this thru Internet Explorer, but here is how you can do it
just like
working with files and folders in My Documents.
1. Press Windows key +R, to open the run dialogue, and type the following,
and press enter
favorites
2. Now, you are in the Favorites folder where you can manipulate files and
folders as you would anywhere else on the computer.
You can create new folders, and then copy and paste your internet
shortcuts

into the folders you want them in.
I don't access my Favorites from Internet Explorer, I placed a shortcut to
the Favorites folder on my Start menu and Access them from there.
It is much quicker to organize them without opening Internet Explorer.
HTH,
Rick Justice

Hi All,

Here is something I received from another list that a lot of people on
this

list might find useful.

   Dan's Tech Tips:
Get 247 Microsoft Word Keyboard Shortcuts In One Place By Lifehacker Grab
this 11 page cheatsheet with 247 keyboard shortcuts used in Microsoft
Word.
Who knew there were so many keyboard shortcuts in Microsoft Word? I
didn't.

Lifehacker has put together a list of keyboard shortcuts that can be found
in Microsoft Word and has them available for download as a PDF version or
a

Word version.
Here are the directions for downloading the 11 page document after you
have

accessed the link provided at the end of this document.
For Mouse Users:
1. Mouse users:
A. Move down the page and choose pdf or word format.
B. If you choose the word format, you are sent to another page where the
download link is located. Click on the Download (23 KB) link. Then
follow the normal download prompts.
C. If the choice was pdf format, you are sent to another page with the
download link. Click on the download pdf file and follow the usual
download prompts.
2. For screenreader users:
I am including directions on how to download the word format since usually
pdf format is not the choice for screen reader users.
A. Press the letter h once.
B. Press the letter u twice to reach the unvisited link of Word version
and press enter.
C. Press control plus home once.
D. Press the letter b once.
E. Arrow down three times to Download (23 KB) and press enter.
F. Follow the usual download prompts.
Good luck!!

Hi Vicky,

I have tried that but still no luck. Jaws is simply not picking up the
edit
box on the google page. I even tried tabbing across from the top of the
page

however, when you get to the last option before the search button, Jaws
just remains quiet and pressing enter or space bar makes no difference.

I am just deeply annoyed and frustrated that such a mainstream product
that

one took for granted to work is not usable any more.

Hi Victoria, why would you need a second TV tuner card for playing
DVDs and movies? Modern Windows computers should be able to do that
right out of the box. TV tuner cards only give access to television
stations, and one, especially if it has two or more tuners so it can
access multiple channels at once, should be more than sufficient.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Suggestions or Cautions Please?

2011-08-31 Thread Victoria Vaughan

Hi and thank you for continuing to try and help me!
However, I think we are having some misunderstanding.

Only 1 of my tuners on my Adaptech duel tuner is working.

I am placing the video or DVD in my machine that plays either one of them. I
do not put the DVD in my computer's disk drive, to be read by my tuner,
Instead, I want the Win Hauppauge tuner to receive the video and audio
signal from the video/DVD machine. That is why, I thought each of my videos
or DVDS could be available through my Windows Media Center.

Are you saying that this is not possible?

What would make their video and audio signals any different from the cable's
video/audio signals?

Again Many thanks! Vicky

So let me get this right you have the adapctech dual tuner and a Hauppauge
tuner card? That makes 3 tuners. You would have to have your cable source
hooked to both to get both to get channels. Running both shouldn't be
much, because there software and drivers are different.
Now as far as DVD and video's. The computer handles those two different.
you can rip the DVD and get a 4mbg file. Because you can only have one DVD
in the CDROM.
Its not possible to get the tuner cards listings to show up with the DVD
or video files. there just to different in handling.

[JAWS-Users] Suggestions or Cautions Please?

2011-08-30 Thread Victoria Vaughan
Hi Folks, My XP laptop seemingly cannot handle 2 TV tuner cards. What I want to
be able to do, is to have one of them for live and recorded TV programs and the
other for my videos and DVDS.

Do you think a quad speed Windows 7 computer with JAWS professional could
handle this?

Any and all thoughts or suggestions will be gratefully received! Vicky

Re: [JAWS-Users] Suggestions or Cautions Please?

2011-08-30 Thread Victoria Vaughan

Thank you for your thoughts on my TV tuner problem!

The problem I have, is that my duel tuner only now works on one source.

I have not been successful in finding a replacement duel tuner.

What I did, was to buy a Win Hauppauge single tuner card and also install
it. Perhaps my problems stem from the two cards not wanting to play nice
with each other.

My computer is a laptop and is probably about 6 years old.

Thanks much for any help! Vicky

Cheers,

Grant

Re: [JAWS-Users] reading details

Brian, Would something like this, help me read the full email address of a
person in Outlook Express? So often, I only can find their name and not
their full email address. This is so annoying when I wish to write to just
them and not the whole list.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] reading details

Hello Lenny,

There are a couple things you can do to have the details read by JAWS.
You
can change your screen echo to All from highlighted. This should cause
JAWS

to read more of the details as you use up or down arrow keys between the
listed items. You can also leave screen echo on highlighted and use right
arrow key after moving on to a file name. Keep using right arrow key to
hear the associated headers. Using left arrow will read them in the other
direction. You can also use tab key to the headers and use right and left
arrow keys across them. Pressing enter key on any of them will sort the
list of files in reverse order. If you press enter on the Name header,
the

list of files will be listed from Z to A. If you press enter on the same
Name header again, the list will be sorted back in A to Z order. The same
is true for the other headers. Pressing enter one time on the date
modified

header will sort the list by most current date and pressing enter on the
date modified header again will sort files showing the earliest modified
files at the top of the list. You can choose which headers to show by
going
under the view menu and opening the Choose Details menu item. In the
dialog

box, you can check items you want to show in details, uncheck those you do
not want showing, and move items up or down in order. If you check an
item,

it will not show as moved to the checked items at the top until you close
the dialog and go back into it. You can then sort the checked items as
you

wish.

Take care.

[JAWS-Users] Two Jaws friendly programs to help with iTunes

Hi Folks, I am currently using jTunes to help me with iTunes. This past June,
Blind Tunes came out to also help with iTunes.

Do you think I could have both on my computer and set up hot keys, so I could

Hi Patti. If you are referring to the latest youtube to mp3
converter? I think that is also the version that I just upgraded too a

few days ago.

Jaws doesn't seem to read the options as well as it did in the last
version. When you tab through the options? After pasting in the URL
of the youtube video you want to convert. There is a list. In which
you can choose the format to which you want to convert the video
into. I notice now, you can choose between: OG, Wave, MP4 and MP3.
Perhaps, you have it set to MP4? and this is causing your trouble?

Take care

How can I tell by the file name if I really need it?

The only way I know how to proceed, is to remove one at a time, and then
restart and try out your computer after rebooting. As you can guess, that
takes quite a long time.

Do you know of a better way to tell from an unknown program name, if it is
really necessary?

Since this is a brand new computer, I would attempt to remove all of the
bloated software included by the manufacturor. Most are paid to include
trial versions from other companies. Most of these, like Norton, you
could not pay me to use. They also install a ton of accessory and extra
software for supporting their hardware. Some run in the background and
are meant to keep your drivers from them up-to-date. Unfortunately, I
have found all software from manufacturers not usable! I usually attempt
once. I remove or disable almost all of their software.

Increase the amount of physical ram installed on your system.

reduce the number of programs open simultaneously and running in the
background (a look in your system tray and in msconfig gives you
infomration on some of the background processes as does a look in task
manager)

practice general good computer maintenance as in running chkdsk and defrag
on a regular basis. How often you need to defrag also depends on what you
do on your computer. If you do a lot of copying and deleting, you need to
defrag more often.

Maybe use a memory manager/memory defrag program though some will argue on
the usefulness of such a utility. I use Freeram XP Pro, a free memory
manager utility. YOu will need to google for its homepage

If available, use a hardware synthesizer such as aDECTAlk express or
Accent external. Many of these can be had used for cheap these days as
they require a legacy serial port on the computer used. Many will work
fine on a usb to serial adapter or you can put an expansion card into your
computer.

Thanks Mike. Yes I have tried rebooting, to no avail.

I know somewhere in the JAWS settings there was something that allowed to
set for response time, but I can't remember where, nor can I find it.

If I did, do you think I should set it for zero?

Thanks very much! Vicky

Re: [JAWS-Users] How to decrease time for JAWS to respond

2011-07-08 Thread Victoria Vaughan
Thank you for your instructions! They sound very useful for speeding up my
computer. However, what I am particularly referring to, is the time delay
between pressing a letter key and hearing JAWS echo it. Sometimes, JAWS
seems to not even know that I have pressed a key.

I've cleaned my keyboard, with the compressed air and got a lot of dog hair
out of it. May be it's just wearing out?

I had thought that this was just a Jaws problem, but now, I'm not so sure.

Many thanks for any thoughts on this matter! Vicky

Do a scanDisk on both.
Just go to desk top, myComputer, hit enter. Now on the local drive hit
application key and chose properties...
Then do a control + tab and hit enter. Tab to fix drive and check. Then ok
your way out.

When you reboot it will do that job.
after that is done. Run defrag on the system, and disk clean up. You can
find that in accessories, system tools, disk clean up.

If you have a registry cleaner run it also.
Now your all clean.
Do a insert + f11, and see just what all is running.
For some you may have to go into control panel, task bar and startup menu.
Just un check hide icons and they will show all.
Stop all that don't need to run and then shut computer off and once off
restart it.
That will purge the memory and come up clean. Where a reboot will still
keep junk around.

No real advantage unless you have other devices you might want to use
blue-tooth with like a cell phone that supports an external blue-tooth
keyboard.

One slight disadvantage: If you have a desktop or older laptop, it may
not have blue-tooth in which case you'll need to install a blue-tooth
adapter. Then, you'll have to pair the keyboard with it, but you
normally only have to do that once.

You probably will have similar range using wireless or blue-tooth.

Xfinity is a program of Comcast that allows your computer to watch

to Net Flicks.

What I am hoping, is that if it is accessible, I could drop my cable
television and just use XFINITY.

I'd love any in put by anyone who has tried XFINITY with a screen reader.

For XP the Windows calculator should suffice. to get to the Windows

If you don't have a Windows Logo key on your keyboard, you can use control

[JAWS-Users] Help with PDF

2011-04-06 Thread Victoria Vaughan
I looked in my Jaws 11 help and could not find any key word for either PDF or
Portable Document Format.

I just ordered some Bible study tools and while it will have MP3s, it will also
have DR. Magee's notes and outlines in PDF. I would like to be able to read
them.

When I find a document name, that I want to read, what should I do to make it
accessible?

Many thanks in advance! Vicky

I followed the link:

But it is no longer available.

If anyone still has it, would you send it to me at:

I would be very grateful!

Unfortunately, even with all the wonderful help on this list, I still
haven't gotten a handle on how to deal with PDFs.

Thank you for any help! Vicky

Hello,

Writer (part of the OpenOffice.ORG suite) will export Word documents to
PDF files. You can do a custom install and only install Writer if you
don't want the other programs in the suite installed. When you pick
customize you will be presented with a tree view of components. You can
press spacebar on each one to choose to have the given component installed
or not enabled. Of course you need to leave the suite on level 0 checked,
but the programs listed on level 1 can be installed or left out of the
installation. After installing Writer, you should run the JAVA
accessibility bridge so it will recognize Writer as a JAVA application and
then restart your system.

When you open a Word document in Writer or when you create a document,
open the file menu and use down arrow to the export choice. PDF will be a
choice. In the next step of the wizard you might need to use the JAWS
cursor and find the graphic before the tagged PDF choice. use a left
mouse button click simulation on the graphic. use JAWS cursor to find the
button to proceed at the bottom of the window and do a left click
simulation on that button. It seems to do a good job tagging, as I use
the accessibility version of Acrobat and there was no tagging needed for
the exported PDF file.

If you use Word 2007 then you can download and install the SaveAsPDFAndXPS
plug-in from Microsoft and then you can save as PDF in the normal Save As
dialog.

Take care.

Hello all,

I just wanted to share my experience these tools. I tried the
www.zamzar.com online service, and it did not create an accessible pdf.
Although it did convert Word doc files to a pdf file, the pdf was not
tagged

and thus not accessible. To be a little techie, the difference is that
Acrobat Standard/Pro uses a plugin called PDF Maker for the conversion
from doc to pdf, which does the accessible tagging. Whereas, Zamzar uses
another conversion tool called e-PDF Converter or Creator v2.1, which
does not covert to tags.

I also tried GhostWord, which is a free software download, and the first
thing I noticed is that the most recent file is from 2004. This is
problematic because many of the tagging features necessary for accessible
PDFs where not really in the market then. When I tried to open the
installation file for the most recent version (2.1), I keep getting the
error message The Compressed Folder is invalid or corrupted. The other
problem I noticed is that it will only work with Word 2000 or Word 98.
So,

it looks like GhostWord is not an option.

If there is anyone out there that knows of any other software they know
of

for doc to accessible pdf conversion, please let me know.

Thanks! Mark

Hello Robert,

There is a web site that will convert word documents to PDF. There is no
charge for the service. It is usually quite fast and takes only a few
minutes. When conversion is done an Email with a download link is sent
to

the person who uploaded the file to be converted. The site is
www.zamzar.com

There use to be a program called GhostWord for converting Microsoft
Office

2003 files to PDF. I have not used it, but apparently the program
installs

as a printer and works similarly to those that convert from PDF to other
formats. It should be available on www.sourceforge.net. Again, I have
not

tried it and I don't know how well it works. However, I have used
www.zamzar .com and received PDF files back quite quickly.

Take care.

I do not have a tuner card. I have DirecTV, who was developing a dual
tuner card in partnership with Microsoft several years ago. They had the
hardware and software developed but never released it because they had
disagreements with Microsoft!

I simply was given a DirecTV DVR because their support for DVS was so
poor. It is not very accessible either except that it can be programmed

designed to worrk with tuner card and Personal Video Recorder (PVR)

The software to watch and record live TV with the card is almost

I use both Internet Explorer and FireFox and find them to be pretty
similar in accessibility.

Webvisum is mainly just used for solving CAPTCHAs and isn't required
for a screen reader to work with FireFox. You no longer need an
invite to get a webvisum plugin. You can just sign up and get one.

As far as flash goes, it is hit or miss on both sides. Listening to
samples on audible.com has been a problem for a long time.
Apparently in JAWS 12 it is no longer a problem. also System Access
seems to have had no issue with the samples for a while now. Having
said that, running JAWS 11 I cannot easily access samples on
audible.com using Internet Explorer, but have no problem accessing
them when using FireFox.

I see no reason not to have both browsers on your machine. It is
very nice to know that you can easily try a second browser if one is
giving you trouble. Also, the ability to automatically solve
CAPTCHAs is extremely satisfying.

Have any of you tried Fire Fox? Are there Jaws keyboard commands for it?Has
Flash troubled you by saying it needed to be installed, even though you had

open media player.
go to tools and options.
control tab until you land on the devices tab.
next tab once to a list, here it shows my DVD drive, display and speakers.
arrow down to speakers.
tab twice to the properties button.
hit the space bar.
arrow to the sound card of choice.
hit alt + the letter A to apply the change you just made.
hit enter.
tab to the OK button.
hit enter again.
unload then restart media player

you should now be listening to your music out of your preferred sound
card.

Yell if you have any further questions.

I have two sound cards on my XP machine, and wish to make music come
out of one, which I have now and JAWS comes from the other one.
However, the sounds that are made when playing games or the regular
windows sounds such as the boot-up, come out of the one with the
music. I'd like the sounds, besides music, to come out of the one
with JAWS. I wear a headset most of the time, so if I'm playing a
game, I have to have my speakers on as well.
Suggestions?

I do not know which tuner card software is accessible. I use an on-line TV
Guide, TitanTV.com, which is very accessible. It also is designed to worrk
with tuner card and Personal Video Recorder (PVR) software. The site makes
it easy to record the show that you are browsing in the grid. It will send
commands to the software to set the recording. There are also help pages
identifying and comparing all of the TV tuner cards and software. Perhaps
this will help?

Hi Folks,

I recently purchased a TV Tuner card for my PC, an internal one to be
exact.

I am currently using Windows XP Home Edition and Jaws 11 latest build.

The software to watch and record live TV with the card is almost wholly
inaccessible, so I was wondering what software I could use, preferably
free, as all my money went out the door for the card that is accessible,
or, at the very least, accessible to the tune of the Jaws cursor, and is
able to run on Windows XP.

Oh, and in case any of you are thinking about it, no, upgrading operating
systems is not an option for me at the moment.

Either way, thanks for everyone's help folks.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws reading a line verces Say All

2011-02-11 Thread Victoria Vaughan
Hi folks, I'm hoping that someone here might be able to give an answer to a
puzzling Jaws reading question.

I'm using the latest Jaws 11 update and Word 7 on an Xp computer.
I have set in Jaws Default dictionary, for Jaws to read the last name of McCoy
correctly. When I read Current line or line by line, it does in deed read
correctly. However when I read with Say All, it reverts back to saying MC Coy.

Do any of you know how I can get the Say All to read the same way as line by
line?

Many thanks! Vicky

HI All,
got a bit of good news. Wehn going to the new site, enter your user name.
tab over and enter your password. arrow down once and you will hear jaws
announce graphic 13; that is the button to enter the site. from there, at
the top of the page, you ought to hear information about Sirius/XM new
site. just under that you will hear option to log out. just under or
tabbed over once you will then hear help/support. tab once again or arrow
down once and you should be in an edit box. just type in the station you
want, such as 100 for STern, 145 for Fox news etc. I guess ther'es others
way of browsing as well, but I haven't explored that far yet. nor have I
found the volume button. I think the site will be great, especially if
they lable their graphics and buttons more effectively. You can now save
favorites stations, but I also haven't figured that one out yet either.

give it a shot and write back with your experiences.
Also, I ntoed to someone they offer a free 7 day trial, but I see it's now

Unless I am doing something wrong, neither f6 nor alt-d does what I
expect. Firstly, if I turn on keyboard help, neither f6 nor alt-d claim
to do anything. Secondly, when in internet explorer if I go to a page,
then hit alt-d or f6, it says, address edit. I do not see a URL at
that point. If I then hit control-c it says nothing is selected. If I
go to notepad and hit control-v, nothing is copied.

Also, if I look in the keyboard manager under either default or internet

Hi Kimsan;

To do what you are wanting to do, I think you will have to do this in the

[JAWS-Users] Punctuation during a Say All

2011-01-29 Thread Victoria Vaughan
Is it possible in Jaws 11, while reading with the Say All command, to have
absolutely no punctuation announced?
Those pesky ellipsis or sometimes quote signs can really break up the flow of
the dialog!

Many thanks for any ideas! Vicky

Vicky,

The elipsis is only read as such when punctuation level is set to All, at
least that is the default behavior.

If you are still hearing elipsis, you can go into the customize
punctuation dialog and set it not to speak anything when it encounters
that symbol. Customize punctuation is only available in the default
configuration file for all applications.

I read a lot of books from bookshare on my computer using Jaws 11. In the
dialog I often come across an ellipsis. I wish to silence it, but haven't
been able to do so. Putting it in the Jaws dictionary manager, hasn't
worked.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Kimsan;

To do what you are wanting to do, I think you will have to do this in
the

default dictionary manager. Otherwise 3 periods is called an ellipsis.
Take care.

Here in lies the problem though.

Not all electronic books are created equal in the site of the cyber gods.

Kindle is a format not necessarily the same as other e-book formats.

It is the old Betamax/VHS wars all over again.

Same with Audio books. I am discovering that not all of our MP3 reading
solutions, Victor Stream, Plextalk, Olympus DM4 so far tested give good
access to all of the audio books they all claim to support.

I expect the same is true with e-book readers.

Is Epub the same format as Kindle? Are all titles available to ePub
equivalent to those available to Kindle?

Will we, the consumer ever actually get what we want or will we continue to
accept and actually purchase what they, the providers insist we should have?

And when will we, the blind, have access to the promise of universal
accessibility that the printing press now four or more centuries ago gave
seeing people who only needed to take the initiative to learn to read.

The universality of binary 1s and 0s is being very deliberately subverted
with the specific intent to limit who has access to written material. This
is not the coincidental barriers of things like Adobe PDF but a deliberate
restriction.

Kindle will certainly hear from me on the subject but it is a message which
requires far broader broadcast.

This goes around and around and around. Tape was thought to kill the music
industry then the cassette then the Internet. Video home equipment was going
to kill the cinema and so Internet sharing and pirating while the movies
make more money than ever before.

There is a Firefox add-on called ePub reader that is
Accessible with Jaws. I use it all the time to read ePub formatted e-books.
I believe too that this works on the mobile browser application as well. So
in theory, you could use it to read books on your mobile device. I haven't
played with the mobile side of things, but you could always give it a shot.
Also, all the Apple I-devices can read e-books with VoiceOver if you want to
go that root.

Please, don't assume it works by our design. We have a different view on an
application being accessible. The Kindle PC application (menu and dialogs)
is accessible with the Screen Reader, the books themselves however, are not.
The books (those which the publishers have allowed), are read using Text To
Speech provided by Kindle. In the case of other books, the application is
still accessible (menu and dialogs), but the books are not at all.

The quality of this speech from the Text To Speech they provide and the lack
of control leaves much to be desired. We have expressed to Amazon and
Kindle, that screen reader users would like to use their screen reader for
speech, Braille, and control of navigation. This current solution, while a
commendable effort, is very misleading to say the least. For those of you
try it out, I encourage users to try it and then point out your opinions to
them directly.

Regards,
Eric

Remember, that if you leave Jaws running, but merely quieten it, Jaws will
affect the interface. This means things will not necessarily act as the

Therefore, I would recommend using your Insert F 4, to unload Jaws and when
you want it back, use your easy to make shortcut key of Control Alt J, to
bring Jaws back up.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Reaching someone else in FS tech support

Is there any way, when I send an issue to FS tech support, for me to reach
someone other than Mr. Tracey Jackson? Seems no matter when I send a tech
support request, I invariably reach him.

As I briefly mentioned in another recent post, when the JAWS 12 beta was
initially released, I submitted a bug I found in the new Text Analyzer
feature, using the recommended bug report form, and received a
confirmation screen after submitting the bug, but the issue was never
addressed and is still present in JAWS 12.0.522.

I couldn't figure out any other way to reach FS with the steps in written
form other than through tech support email. I've reproduced this bug on
multiple machines, all with different hardware, on the same release of
JAWS, so I don't feel it's something unique or specific to my environment.
I provided clear steps to allow FS to reproduce this bug in both my
original bug report and the tech support email.

I finally receive a reply back today, after several days, again from Mr.
Jackson, who now wants me to provide my JAWS serial and a phone number and
time I can be reached, because this issue needs to be forwarded to the
escalations team. Oh, so, the escalations team can't simply follow my
steps to reproduce the bug? We've got to waste my time on the phone,
where I can't easily record the call, so I've got no record of it, as
opposed to being able to archive email?

It's because I seem to end up with Mr. Jackson that I posted my question
here about whether it's possible to use the 32-bit Microsoft SAPI 4 speech
engine under 64-bit JAWS on 64-bit Vista SP2, because I figured I'd just
receive his response without feedback from anyone else in tech support,
and I wanted to make sure this wasn't perhaps just something odd under
Vista which perhaps isn't a problem under Windows 7. Unfortunately, no
one on the list has responded to the original post, which I did receive,
so I must assume no one has any feedback to offer on that issue. I'm
inclined, however, after the numerous tests I've run on this client's
machine, to think that only 64-bit SAPI 4 speech engines will show up
under the Detect SAPI 4 synthesizers option of 64-bit JAWS. Problem is,
I've yet to find any free 64-bit SAPI 4 speech engines, and I personally
haven't found any commercial known 64-bit SAPI 4 speech engines, so it
would seem a moot point to even have the Detect SAPI 4 feature in 64-bit
JAWS.

At any rate, is there any way for me to reach anyone else in tech support
besides Mr. Tracey Jackson, or is it just bad luck of the draw?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Installing Braille display after Jaws

2011-01-05 Thread Victoria Vaughan

Hi Betsy, I'm trying to install my Powerbraille 40.

Many years ago, when I got my laptop, I hooked up my Braille display from my
Pac Mate to it.
However, after my Braille Light died for the second time, I decided it was
time to give up on it and make my

Pack Mate take its place.

To that end, I wanted to rehook up the USB Focus Braille display to its Pack
Mate querty keyboard. This left my Laptop, with only USB connections,
displayless. Thus, my struggles began with trying to figure out how to get
my 16 year old, non-USB Power Braille to work with my laptop.

Well, that's probably loads more than you wanted to know, but That's my
story, and I'm sticking to it!

Thanks again for your help, I'm sure it will work as you told me, as soon as
I get the proper cord.

I'll let you know how it all turns out in the end.

Your friend, Vicky

Hi Vicki,
I'm curious to know what display you are trying to install. I recently
installed an Apex and it was a little different. If that is the display
you're working with, the instructions for installing the Apex driver are
on the Humanware site.

I can email you the instructions off list if you would like.

[JAWS-Users] Express Batch in Backround

2010-12-19 Thread Victoria Vaughan
Hi folks, I've check the openbook 8 Users Guide to no avail. The
Freedomscientific web site also was of no use.

I would like to start an express batch in background and have it read to me as
it processes the pages. Even though the guide says we can do this, it does not
make it clear, how to tell it to start reading, once the first few pages are
ready to be read. It also doesn't tell us how to suspend scanning, when we've
grown tiered of standing there turning the pages.

Have any of you figured this out yet? If so, would you tell me how to do this?
It would make the scanning process a lot less boring!

Many thanks in advance! Vicky

something with the computer itself?

You can also try the following. This works in Word 2002 2003.

When in a Word document if you press shift + F3 you can change all
selected

text from lower case to upper case letters using this toggle keystroke and
pressing
enter on your selection.
Hope this helps. Take care.
Mike

Press Control A to select everything, then press Alt, H, and tab to Change
case. Press Spacebar on Change Case, tab to Upper Case, and press Spacebar
or Enter. That should change everything to upper case. To change it all to
lower case, do the same thing, only press the button for lower case.
Hope this helps.

Hi Folks, Do any of you know of a command in MS Word 2007, where you can
select the text to be changed and then what command will flip it from all
small to all caps?

Thanks very much for any help! Vicky

[JAWS-Users] Help with Pronunciation Dictionary

2010-09-20 Thread Victoria Vaughan
Hi, Are any of you Star Trek Deep Space 9 fans? If so, have you found a way to
have Jaws pronounce the homeworld of the Ferengi correctly?

It is spelled: Ferenginar. I have tried all kinds of phonic spellings and
still not found the one that pronounces Ferenginar as they say it on the show.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi and thanks for your help! It is just finding the right combination of
letters that make Jaws pronounce the Farengi homeworld correctly. I haven't
been able to figure it out yet and wondered if anyone else had?

Again, thanks! Vicky

really sure how to go about solving this type of mystory. Although, I
have put the question out there on Twitter. I hope to get some response
to the query.
