Neil,

I do not know what version of Windows that you are running, but MSE will not
on Windows 8 or later. However, prior to Windows 10, Windows Defender was
not secure enough to trust as your only antivirus program. In Windows 10
however, it has been upgraded, and is said to do a pretty good job. If you
are lookking for a free solution, there are scarcely few options out there.
I would recommend Vipre antivirus or Internet security, among the paid
antivirus programs, it does seem to be the most accessable and reliable
product out there. I believe that a 1 PC, 1 year license will run around
$40, how ever, a lifetime subscr iption only cost about 2 years worth of
subscr iptions. This can be used at no further cost for the life of your
computer, and if you have more than one computer, they offer a 3 PC license
and some larger ones. There is a tutorial on how to use McAfee with Jaws on
the Windows 10 and Jaws mailing list web page, and it sounds as if it could
also be very accessable, though I have no information of its cost. You would
be welcome on that list if you would like to subscribe and download the
tutorial. Good luck in your search.

Hello Gang:

About 2 weeks ago, a VA rep, with my permission, put AVG internet security
on my two computers. AVG assassinated JAWS. She recommended that it be

By the way, when she installed AVG, she did not choose to make JAWS an

Her suggestion now is to install Microsoft Essentials, as the anti-virus

I don't know one anti-virus software from another. I just know, in the past,

Any recommendations between AVG and Microsoft Essentials?

Thanks a bunch. Neil

with this with a friend who was using MicroSoft Essentials a couple of years

I would also like to add that I've used MSE since it's release, and while
it's initial release left much to be desired, Since Windows 7, it's been
terrific.

I have not been infected at all since it's installation, and if you're
getting that many infections, then maybe it's time you reviewed your
downloading habits, and your e-mail security settings. If you're careful
about what you download, and don't just download indiscriminately, there's
no reason why one would get a virus.

Keep in mind that I am talking viruses and not spyware or malware, as those
are more like tracking beacons and items that are used to track your usage
on the Internet, and those can't be caught just using one program. In order
to get complete results, one must use multiple malware and spyware detection
utilities because, as you may or may not know, there is no central database
of definitions in which to draw from, and so each company has their own list
of definitions.

Regardless of which, I don't think viruses are as rampant as these programs
would like us to believe, and with a modicum of caution and a once a week
scanning, one can avoid the hassles of viruses and their kin. Grins.

Hope this helps.

Is that a problem with AVG 2015? Or, were we suppose to tell AVG to leave
JAWS alone? Neither she nor I did that. And, I received no prompts asking if
there were to be any exceptions to the A V G doing its job.

 So, who screwed up.us or A V G?

If it was us, how do I solve the problem, if I put A V G back on the
computers?

 Thanks. Neil

I got the free version and yes it did it to me 2 times. The first time I was
able to get FS to help me change it back. They told me AVG does sometimes
change jaws to demo. Last time it happen agan but lucky for me When I remove
AVG and restarted my PC jaws came up and I was able to authorize it again.
Now jaws 15 is back to normal.

I'm not sure AVG is the one for all the blame in this case. I'd say the
VA had no business installing software unless they asked first. I
personally have AVG free 2015 on 2 computers, both running Jaws
16.0.4350 and don't have any problems. I'd be curious as to which
version of AVG was installed. If they installed a trial of AVG Internet
Security I could see that messing with Jaws. In particular, the firewall
could be blocking Jaws from running, in which case you would probably
have to pull up Narrator to find this out. This assumes that Narrator
can read the dialog box presented by AVG. Jaws works for reading the
boxes, but NVDA for example has problems.

2015-10-01 Thread Neil Towery
It is AVG Internet Security(not the free version), and they installed it
with my permission.
I talked to an FS rep today, and he said that we should have made JAWS an
exception, when the AVG was installed. Apparently, there is a way to do
that. I have no experience in installing anti-virus software.
I think what we will do is re-install AVG, and go through the steps to make
Freedom Scientific software an exception.
So, it sounds like there is plenty of blame to go around, including the VA
rep and me.
 Thanks for your valuable input.

[JAWS-Users] AVG vs. Avira: Which Is More JAWS Friendly?

2015-06-29 Thread Gerald Levy

For those of you who have tried both AVG and Avira, which of these two free
real-time anti-virus programs is the most JAWS-friendly? I'm considering one
of these programs as a replacement for MSE because support for the XP version
will supposedly be discontinued next month, meaning that the database
definitions will no longer be updated. Note that I am more interested in
program accessibility and ease of use than in relative superiority of
anti-virus protection. Thanks.

I have been using the free version of Avast with good success. They
constantly update the software and Avast automatically downloads new virus
definitions when they are available.
The interface is good but requires that the Jaws cursor be used at times.

This wasn't one of your choices but I thought I'd let you know about it.

I'm very encouraged to know that Avast seems to work well for you with Jaws.

I say this because, as you may recall, I'm working with Freedom Scientific
Tech Support on a problem I'm having with my home Windows 7 PC in terms of
not being able to enter text into edit fields when on the internet. One of
the FS tech support people I worked with last week thought Avast was
contributing to my problem, so I uninstalled it. Unfortunately, the problem
still persisted.

I was quite happy with Avast, and would like to reinstall it as my

Hi. I have only just started reading this thread. I switched to MSE after
having continuous trouble with other virus checkers blocking the running of

Re: [JAWS-Users] AVG Virus protection

2015-04-02 Thread Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)
I never had it when I ran under XP; it began after I acquired my Win 7 platform
in December, 2013. It could be 7, it could be some quirk between the program
and my hardware, but I experienced the problem for more than a year. One thing
to watch for, though: if you remove AVG then restore, you'll get it back, and
then you have a problem!

Re: [JAWS-Users] AVG Virus protection

2015-03-30 Thread Steve
No, not if you go with on-line scanners that are recommended by IT magazines.
You won't get a recommendation from a professional to sites that scam people
like that. There are a few other good on-line sites, but I use Sophos. It
updates when you open it and runs a complete scan. There are some other sites
that you can get a link and run from your flash-drive in safe mode.

Of course, this isn't doable with Jaws, but it can be done with a registry hack
using other screen readers.

Just because it doesn't find anything doesn't ipso facto mean it is not
working or is bad. You can confirm this by doing a scan with an on-line
scanner periodically.

The likelihood of getting a virus often is dependent on several factors. If
you do a lot of file-sharing particularly on torrent sites, practice other
stupid habits like opening links from unknown emails, not checking shortened
links with a link examining program like http://longurl.org/ and open
unexpected atta chments, you are more likely to encounter a virus.
Secondly, some anti-virus programs find a lot more things they identify as
viruses that aren't; these are known as false positives.

Look on the web for third-party virus testing labs that often rank the
effectiveness of both paid and free anti-virus programs. If you do some of
the questionable practices noted above, you'll want a very good program with
advanced heuristics; you may even put up with one that may score higher on
false positives.

As I've stated before, I value accessibility and something that isn't a hog
on system resources. I feel comfortable using MSSE and feel comfortable
recommending it to my customers unless I know they are or tend to engage in
riskier activities.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

There are lots of people including Windows Secrets folks that use MSSE. It is

[JAWS-Users] AVG Virus protection

2015-03-27 Thread stormin
I am not sure what you are going with. So when I talk about AVG or any
protection on my computer it is Professional level. Be advised? Why? All
programs have their issues. For example I was running, AVG, Super
ANTI-Spyware and Malware... The hacker got through my home base computer and
planted a couple of bugs. Lucky for me I did see that each of these programs
were not really up-dating. I went to a recommended Company in Arizona called
My Computer Works. Where one can purchase a one time or membership and get
their full protection and set up with them. Anyway...
These people informed me not wise to run the three at one time. Even with
the Tara byte drive and a large amount of Ram memory
So I have AVG Professional. David the list owner is a pretty great person in
setting this up if you need too and he or Rick can do a hook-up to your
computer and walk you through. In purchasing this you will get a e-mail from
them and Don't lose IT! One has all the information you need to get set
up. Two is that once set up a good Idea that you set up through the program
a web-account with them. If you lose the e-mail, this way just go to your
account and put in your e-mail and password and click on your account. All
the information is there. You can even renew from there.
Both this and the setup is pretty easy with the regular jaws and the PC
Curser, if I have the terms right. Right David and Rick?
What I did is have it set for Automatic up-date and most of the time your
jaws, above Jaws 14 latest will read their information. Before that it was
the PC Curser for me. David can tell you more clear in tech terms on the
things that should be checked and what should not be checked. I do know you
want to make sure of two things. One make sure it is covering in and
out-going mail. Two is that in scanning the computer as set for Time each
day or every other day, make sure it is scanning your entire computer.
Now for Malware I have Malware Pro and Malware Premium I bought the second
as that covers the latest of two different programs that I have. Just a
added security and according to My Computer Works, That one is doing its
job nicely!! As in Microsoft Outlook Office Email, 2013 it found 4 issues
since reset up after the Hacker crash.. I am questioning if it is worth the
money and between myself and My Computer Works, I'll make up my mind if to
renew that one.
I would agree Malware Professional and that has been up-graded is worth the
money!! The other is what is a person comfortable with. I found out nothing
is full proof. As a friend of mine has a What he thought a secure Web-site
He was just hacked two days ago.
I am not the smartest cookie when it comes to the computer but ask a lot of
questions and then what I don't know find a reliable company and stick with
them. Oh yes, My Computer Works is 100% American ...
That may not be a issue with some. I am still getting calls from people that
say they are Microsoft specialist and we see you have issues. All I can say
is learn the program and be safe!

It is not as good as some other programs, but it misses a lot of threats is
hyperbole. If you're concerned about it, use a spyware program like
MalwareBytes along with it. I also do an off-list scan with a anti-virus
scanner such as Sophos on a weekly basis.

There are lots of people including Windows Secrets folks that use MSSE. It is
certainly a lot more accessible and not a system resource hog as some other

Interesting you say that about missing threats. I worked on a computer
at my church which had over 100 viruses on it and Microsoft Security
Essentials didn't pick up any of them. According to MSE, the computer
was fully protected. AVG found and removed all of them. As to being a
hog, it may not be one when it is running in the background but it sure
takes a long time compared to AVG to do a whole computer scan.

Hi,
You'll be better off, if you upgrade to the Pro Versions.

And try the Free Hitman Pro, as a secondary Mallware protection.

Mister Rivard,
Now, that I have your name straight, because River and Rivard sound the same

Hitman Pro is one of the Mallware Microsoft Accessibility uses to remove

I downloaded the Hitman Pro free for 30 days and if, I like it I'll buy the

bought the Thanksgiving special offer for $15.

If, I'm testing or trying a program,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Avg anti-virus

2014-01-17 Thread Pinky
Hi Group,
I have a personal opinion on these free anti-virus software's. I have use
them many years ago. So don't jump back on my case if you don't agree. I
have had a friend use this AVG and a virus took over his pc. I know this
can happen with any anti-virus but I feel the free ones are not that good
and you get what you pay for. If you go and check out the reviews on this
free anti-virus software you will find most of them put the free ones at the
bottom of the list.

I feel all my information I keep on my pc is worth a lot more than trying to
save a few bucks on using free anti-virus software that does not protect
very well. If you get a virus on your pc and it cannot be fix then you have
to restore the whole pc and that could cost 80 to 100 bucks and your info is
all lost if you don't have it backed up. Plus you have to spend hours
resetting up your pc the way you like it and getting all the JAWS setting
put back in.

I go on to Amazon and I have found Norton for three pc for around 20 bucks.
I also found on Amazon a Norton antivirus for five bucks. I do this by
trying to purchase last year anti-virus. By using last year's anti-virus
you still get all the latest update files and are still protected as good as
using the new version. Also by using last year's Norton a lot of times
after I install it Norton lets me update to the new version free.
So before you jump my bones I am not saying Norton is the best anti-virus
software I am just telling you how I save some money on purchasing it.
That is just my two cents worth.
Any comments on this is welcomed as to how accessible it is with Jaws.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Avg anti-virus

2014-01-17 Thread Gerald Levy

Norton? Most blind folks on other lists who have tried it claim that it is
not very JAWS accessible, not to mention that it is a resource hog. And
using an outdated version of an anti-virus program could be potentially
riskier than having no anti-virus protection at all, because it may not be
capable of recognizing the most current malware threats, and thus lull you
into a false sense of security. It is never a good idea to use an older
version of an anti-malware program, just because it's cheap. As for your
statement that free anti-virus programs are not that good, Avast and Avira
have consistently received favorable reviews from leading tech experts and
reviewers. Unfortunately, they are not as JAWS accessible as they used to
be, according to people on other lists. I have been using MSE on my system
since its introduction in October, 2009, and have yet to suffer a virus
attack. Maybe I have just been lucky, or maybe MSE really works. Could you
elaborate on your experience with Norton anti-virus and tell us how
accessible it is with JAWS?

Gerald,
You miss understood what I said about using last year's version. I used
Norton 2013 and it downloads the latest definishing files to keep it up to
date. It is not lacking in away from protection in my opinion. Then after
I load Norton 2013 in late fall I usually get a message from Norton letting
me update to the Norton 2014 until my prescription runs out.

I do have to agree with you it is not very accessible using JAWS

I just don't agree tho that the free version are that good in my opinion.
Most of the time they are not rated that good.

Anyway that is just my opinion and we have to just have to agree just to
disagree.

Thanks George,
I'm tired of my McAfee on 3 different computers with different levels of
McAfee and all 3 turning off my firewall.

No matter how many times I repair it.
I'll be sure not to get Norton.

Thanks for your help.

is it just mcafee that turns off the firewall, or do other security
applications turn it off. how do you know when it is off, this would be
good to know.

Kevin,
Usually jaws will tell you the fire wall is turned off, to press the space
bar to correct this Bubble.
And then, I guess everything is swell, if not check the fire wall your self.

I get a message spoken by JAWS indicating I am not protected.
I don't know why it happens.
I just checked my microsoft firewall and was off also.
I made sure it was on around a month ago.

[JAWS-Users] AVG Virus Scan

2012-08-17 Thread Fred Adams
I am using W7, outlook 2010 and latest jaws and I would appreciate some
pointers on using the AVG virus protection. I have a new computer with AVG
already installed so I would like to give it an honest try. Lightening
damaged my old computer which had MSE virus protection and I liked it very
much but I would like to see how I like AVG. I will appreciate any
suggestions as this is new to me. Thanks much,
