Mike many thanks for that got things sortedd. it will save me from going mad!! I find jaws very bloted after window-eyes. Cheers Robin.. --- Email Sent using, "Becky!" Note: The apostrophy & dollar sign are only examples. You can change how Jaws speaks the apostrophy in the Settings Centter default all applications by doing the following. If you only want to change the punctuation settings in a particular application just open the Settings Center while in the particular application by pressing Insert + 6, on the number row above the main keyboard to open the Settings Center for that particular application: 1. Press Insert + 6, on the number row above the main keyboard to open the Settings Center, & press, Control, shift, + D, to open default all applications. 2. Arrow down to, Punctuation closed & press right arrow to open. 3. Arrow down to customize punctuation & press the spacebar to open. Don't press enter here, if you press enter instad of the spacebar, the Settings Center will close. 4.A. When making changes in the customize punctuation list, if you do not want Jaws to speak/recognize a particular punctuation mark you want to choose the " all " selection. You will have 4 radio buttons to arrow up or down through. They are none, some, most, & all. In these selections they work backwards than what you would think. For example; If you choose " none " for the dollar sign, Jaws will speak / recognize every dollar sign in whatever you are reading. On the other hand, if you choose the " all " radio button, Jaws will not speak / recognize any dollar signs. 4.B. After you pressed the spacebar on customize punctuation, you are now in a list of punctuation marks. Arrow down the list and when you have the punctuation mark you want to change highlighted, tab 1 time to the radio buttons that I mentioned earlier. 5. Keeping in mind what I mentioned earlier about these choices working backwards, select the box in this list, in your case not wanting any apostrophy's spoken, choose the all button. 6. Now, if you want to make a change to another punctuation mark, shift tab back to the list and highlight a different punctuation mark, tab back to the radio buttons and select the box you prefer. 7. After you are done making your changes tab to okay and press the spacebar. 8. Tab to apply, press the spacebar, tab to okay, press the spacebar to save your changes & close the Settings Center. Now, I hope that you are not as confused as I am after typing all of this. Re: [JAWS-Users] new user, jaws repair
No, a JAWS repair does not change your settings. Here are the instructions I received from FS/VFO in February. First, make sure you have the .exe file on your system for the JAWS build you're running. You can download it from the FS/VFO website. Unlike before, it doesn't seem to matter where you keep it on your system. Close all running apps. Highlight the JAWS .exe file. Press shift-F10. Arrow up to "Copy as path." Press enter. Open the run dialog with Windows key-r. Press control-v, then spacebar, then / (the forward slash key), then the word "type", spacebar, and then the word "repair." Let me try that command line a different way. After pressing control-v followed by the spacebar, continue with /type repair Then press enter. Note. The JAWS repair can take maybe twenty minutes to run, so patience is required. Listen for any verbalizations that might require some action, although the only thing you'll probably need to do is reboot when the repair is done. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of net bat66 Sent: Wednesday, May 24, 2017 12:07 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] new user, jaws repair how do you do a jaws repair? and would it erase the settings i changed? i can not turn on speech for the insert key since i messed with the jaws key frome the insert to the scroll lock and back again. it is not muted in the keyboard labeler. [JAWS-Users] new laptop/jaws 13
Good morning, My husband surprised me with a new hp pavilion 64 bit laptop. He bought a anti virus I am thinking it is web root not sure, it was already installed on the unit. Not really thinking I tried to install jaws 13 from the cd, halfway through it froze up, I shut off the computer, I thought the cd had a problem, the talking installed installed fine, when I got to set up it got stuck. So I download the jaws 13 64 bit from the website of freedom, it all installed fine I heard jaws talking and it ask to be restarted, well it started up fine, got to the desktop it is stuck, can not do nothing, no jaws and the mouse is stuck and my husband says it is not doing anything. Is it possible that jaws and this anti virus is clashing together. I use mse on my other units, but my husband did not know that. He bought it from best buys, we are planning on taking it back today to see if they can fix it. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I would try and turn off the virus program and then start up jaws. If Jaws works successfully after that, you have your answer. Should that be the case, try and uninstall the virus program and install your favorite one instead. Hope this helps! Reese, Thank you for the help. Unfortunately it is stuck and I can not do anything, my husband can not do anything with the mouse, and the keys do nothing, so I am going to take it back to bestbuys and see what they can do. Re: [JAWS-Users] new laptop/jaws 13
Well, since you haven't installed much on the laptop yet, the simplest thing to do is to: 1. Hit f8 to go into safe mode. See if you can disable the anti-virus program, or uninstall it and then install Jaws. Then, you can try either re-enabling that AV program or dump it and use MSSE. 2. HP has a built-in recovery mode on the computer which you access with the f11 key during bootup. If you run that, you can restore it to the factory condition, which will mean that you won't have Webroot but it will be just as it was purchased from the factory. For info on the HP recovery manager, see http://h20331.www2.hp.com/Hpsub/cache/312352-0-0-225-121.html Take my advice, I don't use it anyway. Hi Kathy, Has the user account control been disabled? If not, this will prevent the proper installation of any program. The UAC window pops up whenever attempting to install a program, or change system settings, and you have to okay this dialogue before you can continue. Hi Marsha. Probably a press on insert+escape is enough. But when you wrote that it is a brand new laptop, do you then have checked out the screen settings, so it appears correctly? Color's 24 bit or best 32 bit, and resolution can be a countless of setting's, whether your screen is all between 10 and 17 inch'es. An example can be something like 1160 * 652, or 1680 * 945.
