KR> kr2 accident (long) with the facts
Netters, To answer the question on my collapsed news gear. It was a standard Diehl metal nose gear that was sold for the VW powered standard KR. It really survived the first hard hit but the second hit was much harder. It bent just below the upper socket that it fits into., Also it bent back about half way down the gear leg. We slid down the runway on the lower bend and almost ware through it. The nose wheel turned 180 degrees after we went off the pavement and into the dirt. It sheared off the nose gear stops that were to keep it from going to far around. There isn't any damage to the tire, wheel, the aluminum casting or the fire wall. I'm impressed with how strong the wooden KR fuselage is! The Diehl gear comes with a socket fitting that bolts to the firewall and also to the lower motor mount. It doesn't show any damage. The only damage to the (home made) motor mount is from the acid that ran out of the battery vent tube. and messed up my paint job job on the motor mount. The vertical tail was snapped off. I have removed the elevator and carved out the two spars. I have enough foam to make the new vertical and rudder. After I get my Spruce order I will get on it. David Goodman's E-mail with the pictures of my KR gives you a good look ot the bent nose gear. Where did it fail? Whose nose gear was it? Diehl? He has two, a standard and a Corvair version (don't know the difference). Do any recommendations come out of this incident regarding the mounting of the nose gear? Jim Morehead was the builder of this plane, so he final authority on the nose gear. It appeared to me to be a standard (VW) Diehl system. As far as where it folded, you can take a look at link http://sites.google.com/a/wildblue.net/goodmans/Home/2010-kr2-mishap. There is a good photo from the side of just the nose gear located there. We hit extremely hard on the nose on the first bounce. I could not tell you how hard the second hit was compared to the first, as my eyes were completely uncaged for about one second after the first impact. What I can tell you is the gear did not shatter until after the second impact nose-first of the plane onto the runway. I know this because though my eyes were uncaged I could still see the prop shatter on the second hit. That the landing gear withstood the first impact is a testimony to the Diehl gear's solid design. Having nose-planted my own plane three years ago on a Corvair-weight gear (which bent, but did not fail) and last year taking that same strut off-roading at 35 KTS off a runway in California the Diehl gear is superb. In both my excursions outside the norm I took the strut to a muffler shop and had it bent back out ~15 degrees or so... good as new. A safety plug (again) for those new to the plane. My own first bent strut came from an inadvertent takeoff during high speed taxi. I pushed the nose over (1/16 to 1/4 inch stick forward) and came crashing down on the nose. The second came on a landing in very rough weather and one of my brake pistons failed. Not able to stop, I bled as much speed off as I could before the end of the runway. Nothing I could do about it, but the strut held again, though I dug a good sized furrow with the nose tire in the soft dirt. Sorry for the long answer. KR> Divorce Result of Wing Attachment Fight
Netters, Sometimes you need to put the wings on and there isn't anyone around to help. I found that it can be done by yourself if you have a shop stool that is spring loaded so when you press the lever it will adjust the height. I took a couple of AM bolts and turned them into bullet shapes. Lay the wing on the ground (on a foam pad) Then lift up the wing and insert the two bullet shaped bolts into the lower wing attach fittings. Lift the wing tip up and place the shop stool under it. Bush the lever that allows the stool to get taller. Go slow and when the upper wing fittings line up Place the other bullet shaped bolts in to align the fittings. Then you can put in the regular bolts in while the bullet bolts keep it in alignment. To remove the wing, just support the wing tip on the stool, loosen the lower bolts and remove the upper bolts. Lower the wing tip onto a foam pad and remove lower bolts and lower that end onto a foam pad. The hard part is picking up the wing and placing it on your wing rack. And by the way, be sure to disconnect the aileron linkage. KR> Gear leg junction
Gavin, I faired in my gear legs by covering the gear leg and the wing area with clear packing tape. Then hot glued foam and sanded it to shape. Covered the foam with two layers of glass. Two days later I worked the faring loose and slid it down the gear leg and removed the foam from the inside. Slid the fairing back into place and glassed it to the wing only. It fits tight to the gear leg but is not glassed to the leg. If and when the leg flexes it is free to flex and hopefully will not break anything. Netters, I¹m ready to glass in my canopy to the canopy frame. The plan book says to peel back the protective cover from the edge approximately 1.5 inches. Then place a band of ³masking² tape or ³electrical² tape 1 inch from the edge. Which tape do you recommend? Then is says to run two 2 inch BID tapes around the canopy inside and out. How do you keep the tape from having a shaggy edge with out sanding into the plastic canopy? Any thoughts on running a strip of double sided scotch tape around the canopy frame to hold the canopy in place while applying the 2 inch BID tape? I¹m sure those that have been through this step will have some very helpful ideas. Also looking for a ³night latch² type safety catch that will keep the canopy from blowing clear open if it ever gets loose. Hope everyone has a great upcoming three day weekend. KR> Canopy questions.
Dan, Good to hear from you again. I have a couple of questions on your replys. 1. First give yourself only as much canopy edge as you need to secure it and then put on your fiberglass tapes as neatly as possible, using the plastic backing method. Then after that cures, take off the vinyl tapes and re-tape it about 1/8 of an inch deeper into the canopy. Do you lay on both layers of tape, sand then micro? 2. After I have put on the filler and sanded, I like to do the last process again, with no filler, to get as fine a fairing to the canopy as possible. Is this just a resin coat? Doesn't that make it harder to sand? One more question. Did you use the 2" BID tape that the plan book talks about? The only 2" tape listed in the Aircraft Spruce catalog on page 32 of called "Standard E-Glass and Fiberglass Tapes" It doesen't say it is BID. It comes in a 50 yd roll, boy that sure should be enough. Habe a good three day weekend, if you get Monday off. Looking forward to seeing your KR at Mt. Vernon this year. KR> Plan #'s
Netters, A while back I contacted RR asking what number I should use to register my KR project. In the front of my plan book it has Book Number 67 and Plan number 7501. The answer I got was ³7501 was register to someone in the Mid West.² I wrote back and asked ³how can two people have the same number. I got no response. I finally dug out my receipt for the plans and found that my receipt was for 7561. I sent a photo copy of my receipt and a copy of my plan book page asking if I should just change the number in my plan book. I have still never heard from Her. Jim Morehead Cameron Park, CA

Netters, Awhile back someone posted a message on his seat belt attachment. It was an angle bracket made with 4130 steel that was bolted to the rear spar using two bolts through the solid parts of the spar. Here is a question for you engineering type people. could these brackets be made out of 6061-T6 Alum? If so what thickness angle alum. would be best. I was thinking of using of using 1/8² or 1/4² thick 2 X 3 inch angle. Bolted on with either AN3 or AN4 bolts with an alum. backing plate I welcome all comments. Thanks, Jim Morehead Cameron Park, CA

Ray, I used Permatex High-Temp RTV Silicone 26B. around the outside edge to hold the SS steel to the Fiberfrax. It is good for 650 deg. F. It just has to hold things in plae until you get the motor mount bolted on. Later I cut the fiberfrax back about 1/8 inch then mixed up some resin and flox and filled it in. When cured. sand it down. KR>Masking off a piano hinge
Netters, I¹m looking for a better way to mask off a piano hinge before I glass it to my cowl. What I have tried is to use the clear packing tape and just cover the rolled part of the hinge. After floxing it and covering the untapped part of the hinge in position, I had to use a knife and cut out the packing tape and scraping away some resin that gets in the way of replacing the hinge pin. To make sure that the top half of the cowl will line up, I want to put the hinge together and flox it in place. I can mask off the top side of the hinge rolled section but how do I mask off the bottom side? Sure would hate to end up with a one piece cowl. I¹m open for suggestions.
