I'm ready to feel safe and meet the insurance company requirement.  The
insurance companies are looking for ten hours of dual before turning me loose.
I don't expect any one person to put up with me for that long!  Also, I haven't
chosen a company yet, I may be able to get away with 3hrs... so far the average
requirement is ten hours dual in a kr.  Maybe a waiver can be made if no kr
flight time is available... I don't know yet.

I already have:
300TT
Commercial IFR SEL
Tailwheel and aerobatic course
no airplane

Tailwheel:  Only 10hrs in a Citabria... and will be most comfortable in this
before going up in a kr.  Yes its an apple-orange comparison.  I don't have
another tailwheel plane around here in East Tennessee.

SC, NC, KY, GA are easy states to get to, and I'll drive to location.  If
you're willing to put up with me for a couple hours anyway, please email/call
me.  Unfortunately, I can't provide the plane. amckev...@yahoo.com

Also, if you know anyone, or school with a pitts, piper colt, or any other
short-coupled tailwheel plane that may substitute, I'll be happy with that too!

Thank you,

NetHeads,

Some of you may remember my comments from a few weeks ago regarding Approach
Systems and their APIC software.  I bought an APIC Pro update from them ten
weeks ago, and have made 10 email attempts to get the "license key" that would
enable me to run it.  Suspecting that maybe my email address was being caught
by their spam filter, I used my work address also, which rarely sees the
internet world, and therefore is almost certainly not caught as spam.  I,ve
tried calling, but their phone answering system is simply "shunted to
ground"...they say leave a message, but never give you the chance to do so.  A
fellow CorvAircrafter emailed them regarding a future purchase, and he got a
reply from them a couple of hours later.  Knowing that his email was getting
through, I asked him to forward my message to the president of the company...he
did... still no reply from them (and it's not in MY spam filter either).

So.I'm pretty sure they just took my money and don't care to bother with
me, unless they're irritated with me for some other reason.  Admittedly we're
only talking $20 here, but it's the principle of the thing, and I really do
like the sotware and need the update.  I have a much older free version, but
it's outdated.

So this is a warning to those of you considering buying this software that I
wouldn't exactly recommend their tech or sales support, and it sure looks to me
as though they've closed up shop, but left the money-making machine
running...at buyers' expense!  Perhaps  if several  of you  forwarded  this
message to sa...@approach-systems.com , maybe they'd notice.  I like the
software, but I can't use it without a license key.

Thanks...

2010-09-26 Thread jack.cooper2009

Neal

I have never used a ratio for mixing micro. Just keep adding micro until you
have a very thick, almost like peanut butter consistency. The mixing stick
should be able to stand up in it. A slury will run unless its a flat surface.
Even with the peanut butter consistency it will run on a vertical surface but
it sands easily.

I may be wrong but I don't think there is any federal requirement to have
insurance but your local authorities may require you to show proof of insurance
to use their facilities. Our airpark requires owners to have X$ liability on
their aircraft but guests who fly in are not required to have it. It only makes
sense to protect yourself with liability insurance even if you don't want or
can't afford hull insurance.

KR> fly-in

2010-04-24 Thread jack.cooper2009

A reminder that the KR and Corvair flyin is less than a month away.  This is
another opportunity to get together with old friends whom we see only one or
two times a year and to meet some new friends.  There is no agenda, just get
together and have fun talking and looking at airplanes. The flyin will be at
(04tn) Hensley Airpark in beautiful East Tennessee. If you are flying in f rom
a great distance and want to make a weekend of it come on Friday and stay until
Sunday. I have some extra room to put some guest up or can provide
transportation to a local motel. A hambur ger/hotdog lunch will be served on
Saturday, if coming early and staying late you will not go hungry. For flying
and driving directions see http://www.hensleyairpark.com/directions.htm . or
give me a call at 423-278-8617. If you would like to bring your wife, my wife
will excort the ladies on a tour of historic Greeneville TN.

If you are planning on coming please let me know by emailing me at
kr2coo...@comcast.net .  I would like to know what day you are flying in on and
how many in your party.

Roy has my engine for the 5th bearing but he called me sometime back and said
that there was no backlash in the cam to crank so the crank mains had to be
reground. He was trying to finish it up prior to CC17 and had planned to drop
it off on his way south but as hard as he worked he had too much to do to
finish it in time for delivery so I'm looking forward to getting it soon. I'm
working on installing position and landing lights and finishing the wings now.
This week I have spent a lot of time working on my neighbors Cherokee under the
guidance of our local AI. Last time I flew it we got a high frequency tone in
the headset which changed with power so we decided it was the alternator and it
was due an annual so its down for the annual. We are doing a very thorough one
because its the first annual since Reg has owned it.

I just came in from watching a Pitts special doing aerobatics over the airpark.

Jack,

I am going to start on the fuel system changes required to use wing tanks
and remove the header, or at least most of the header tank.  Then I am going
to find out what the FWF forward should cost to make someone a really great
deal, and put it up for sale.  As soon as it sells, I will take the Black
Bird down till the new engine is installed, or as soon as I get the wing
tanks finished, I will proceed to install the Corvair.  I was going to wait
till after the gathering, it may still work out that way, but, I see no
reason to let a perfectly good Corvair engine sit in my shop when it could
be giving me many hours of wild rides.  This engine with Roy's bearing is
pretty awesome.

Today the Black Bird returned home from CC17, with her new engine, built by
Roy Szarafinski, waiting for her out in my shop.  Some of you may know that
I had to leave her down there due to weather.  George Schuld, one of the new

One of our RV guys here in Columbia, James Clark,  offered me a ride back
down to the Airpark, so I could fly her back home, but then, this week of
fantastic weather came upon us, and I just had to go right away.  So I
booked a flight on US Air into Orlando, and Arnold Holmes, CC17 host, gave
up his morning to pick me up and then drive me and some friends to the local

got back home, I needed a ride over to CAE from CUB, to pick up my car and
get back home.  One of the founders of our chapter and all around great guy,

Xen Motsinger,  came riding by as I was putting the plane up, and I told him

of my problem.  Without hesitation, he said get in, and he delivered me to

KR> KR Flyin

2010-04-01 Thread jack.cooper2009

KR netters

Sending out a reminder of the KR fly-in I'm having in east Tennessee on May 22,
2010. I would like to get a feel for who and how many plan to attend so I will
know how to plan. For those who are planing on coming please respond to me off
net at kr2coo...@comcast.net . I would like to know if you are flying in, or
driving in, the number in your party,  and will you arrive on Friday , 21st or
Sat 22nd.  Some of you have responded already but I haven't been keeping count
so if you will kindly reply again, it will be much appreciated. Reservations
are not necessary to attend so if there is a last minute change of plans and
you can or can not attend, its ok.

For those of you who have not previously heard about the flyin here are some
more details. It will be at my home at Hensley Airpark,
http://www.hensleyairpark.com/index.html  04TN in North East Tennessee near
Greeneville, TN. We have 3000 ft paved runway and 1800 grass. To give incentive
for those flying or driving from greater distance we will start on Friday May
21st, and go through Sunday 23rd. For those planning to make a weekend of it I
have two guest bedrooms, and plenty of floor space if you don't mind crashing
on the floor or a couch. For campers I have two vacant lots adjoining my lot
which can be used. There are also motels in nearby Greeneville so make your own
reservations and I will make sure you have transportation to and from the
motel. If you would like to bring your wife, my wife will host the ladies on a
historic tour of Greeneville home to President Andrew Johnson and nearby
Jonesboro Tn, Tennessee's oldest city. If you are planning a spring vacation to
Great Smokey Mountains this would be a great starting place as Pigeon Forge is
only about an hour away.

Hope you can come. If you have additional questions email me.

KR> Strobe power supplies

2010-02-28 Thread jack.cooper2009

I was wondering where others have mounted their power sulpplies for the
strobes. I have a set of aeroflash as seen at
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/elpages/aeroflashNav.php  . I think its
best to locate the power supply near the strobe to cut down on interference so
I'm thinking of making an access panel on the bottom side of the wing abour
8-12 inches from the tip. Do I need air circulating through there for cooling
the PS and how should that be done.

Looking for answers and pictures if you have them. I have already checked
Langford, Jones and Heath websites and sidn't see anything.

I think you need to double the hour estimate. My 03 Silverado has 142600 miles
and another feature of the odometer is an hour meter and it has 4120 hours.
Sounds like it would be good enough for a KR. It may also need a regulator so
as not to provide too much vacuum for the instruments.

Better yet, why not use the Ford electric vacuum pump of the `99 diesels?
They weight about 12 ounces and barely larger than my fist. At 200 bucks
they are a lot cheaper and lighter than an aircraft pump. And I put 280K on
my truck before the pump went out last winter. It ran the 4x4, the heater

on one with no problems.  They could be belt driven or a coupler could be
easily made to drive them direct.  Just a thought.

Subject: KR> Good News, Great News, "OK its not open Friday"

I just wanted to pass along some great news and thank yous to those of you who
have been so encouraging.

As some of you may know, I have had my KR2 for sale and the reason for the sale
was due to the unfortunate demise of my marriage a few years ago, and the loss
of my job several months ago. However, I did not want to sell my KR.

I had lots of interests in my plane. lots of tire kickers but when it came
right down to it, most probably just didn't have the funds to buy it.

Last Monday, a trade deal involving a project plus cash came to me for a
partial trade of a Dragonfly plus cash to buy my KR2. This came at a time when
my personal funds have gotten to the point of being almost desperate to make
some sort of deal. Well, as it turns out, the deal was just not something I
could do. I just could not give my plane away in trade for something of such
questionable construction quality and unknowns.

Then this week, I received an offer of employment. A great offer.

OK, so why am I writing this email to the KR group?

Well, first I want to say thank you to all of you here who personally
encouraged me to tread on. Those of you who shared with me that you had been in
my dilemma before and that I could make it. I also wanted to encourage others
who may be building or in other phases to let them know to tread on and that
this group will help you with technical help as well as awesome encouragement.

So, I am re-inspired. I am ready to get past the last four years of challenges
caused by personal struggles. Its time to get that plane back in the air and
enjoy life. and with a little more luck, Gods help and this forum,  I will
continue to be a proud member of the KR group. So,  its time to get my hanger
queen back in order and make it to the next KR gathering and this time by way
of KR.

thanks guys

Maybe this is old news, but i stumbled a cross a mdodel
 a  KR-2S ?

Ebay item 120058142248

Copy on the ebay item read:
RAND ROBINSON KR-2On June 1, 1974, the KR-2, a two seat version emerged into
the world of experimental aviation with its maiden flight. The prototype KR-2,
N4KR, was powered by an 1834cc Revmaster, which is an otherwise stock 1600cc VW
with 99mm cylinders. This particular engine was a single ignition version and
used a Bendix mag and a Posa carburetor. Revmaster gives the engine a
continuous rating of 60 hp at 3000 rpms, which is on the conservative side. Ken
Rand, the designer/builder, obtained cruise speeds of 180mph at 3200 rpm and
airspeeds of 200mph at higher altitudes.

KR> Fly-in

2010-02-06 Thread jack.cooper2009
I have had questions about motels, camping and meals so here goes. There are
motels in Greeneville , I haven't checked their rates yet but you can check on
line. I will provide transportation to motels for those who fly in. As for
camping you can use the back yard and the vacant lot next to me, also the
hangar and basement. I also have two spare bedrooms and two couches and a gas
grill on the deck. There is a small 1/2 bath in the hangar. I plan to keep the
meals simple, burgers and hot dogs, spaghetti , etc. We may even go to the
Farmers Daughter Restaurant for a evening meal, I think Mark Langford and Joe
Horton would give it a good recommendation .  I will be asking for volunteers
to help prepare meals. If you would like to bring your wife, Sandy (my wife)
will be glad to escort the ladies on a historic tour of Greeneville , home of
Pres. Andrew Johnson and Jonesboro , Tennessee's oldest city. Another historic
attraction can be seen on the downwind leg to rwy 19, Davy Crockett birth place
State Park. Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are only about 1 and 1.5 hr. drive from
here. Fly in and drive in on Friday May 21 and Saturday  the 22. Stay until
Sunday.

Sitting at the computer while ago I heard an airplane overhead preforming
aerobatics so I went outside with a lawn chair and binoculars and watches the
airshow. Yes, I love being retired and living in an air park. I also began
thinking about having a KR fly in here at my home in the air park sometime in
May. I'm currently looking at the weekend of May 22, 2010 for the event. I
would like to make it a weekend event to give incentive for more people to come
fro m  greater distances, but I do want to keep it simple when it comes to food
and lodging. I'm looking for feedback so if you have comments or suggestions
that would be pertinent to the group we can discuss it on the net (just don't
get too long winded and don't drag out the discussion too long) but personal
questions and comments  should be made to me at kr2coo...@comcast.net . For

2000 ft at about 95 knot ground speed and in turbulance that made it a fight to
maintain heading and altitude. Not a plesant flight. Flying back on the 29th
was much better, 9500 ft. with 15 knot tail wind and very smooth, CAVU.

I just got back from a quick flight to Tupelo.  Even with the heavy
crosswind, it was 50 minutes there and 50  back.  I visited with prospective
builder Patrick Fain and took him up for a ride.  So far he's the best
newbie I've seen with a KR stick.  I let him have it and there was no change

for free.
Copied from an AOPA email:

>>Paper pilot certificates will no longer be valid after March 31, 2010, so
>>make sure you?ve upgraded to a plastic certificate. The FAA mandated the

I'm looking for a linear actuator for my KR for the belly board. I know some
are using Vans flap motor but I'm trying to avoid paying $380 for an actuator.
I was wondering what some others are using and what the travel time is on them.
I have been looking on ebay and there are some there very reasonably priced but
some say travel time is 11 MM per sec, and I think that is too slow. Others
don't have a travel time listed. All suggestions appreciated.

When Gene Byrd crashed his KR2S a few years ago his harness was attached to the
rear fuselage, I'm not sure exactly where or how but he walked away from the
crash with a small cut to the forehead and bruses across his sholders caused by
the belts. There is no way to say what the results would have been if they were
attached to the shelf because it appears to still be attached to the fuselage.
His bruises healed rather quickly. Judge for yourself.  Pictures of his crash.

NetHeads,

Just about every day, the list automatically unsubscribes one or two people
because of "excessive bounces".  A "bounce" is a returned mail that was
undeliverable...no server to send it to.  This is usually due to your ISP
(internet service provider) having connection problems, their mail server is
down, or some other reason why the rest of the world can't get email to your
box.  Sometimes it's because you've closed your account without unsubscribing,
and that's why the mechanism is there, to stop sending email to dead email
boxes.  Why bother, you ask?  Because in an effort to prevent spamming, big
email providers like AOL will blacklist an entire domain (like mylist.net), if
they get a lot of bounces from difference account names on the same
domain...because it might be a shotgun blast of "hail Mary" email sent to
a...@aol.com   through z...@aol.com in the hopes of duping a few folks into
their scam, or whatever.

The point of all this is that the system will automatically unsubscribe you,
and it usually happens at 5PM CST, which is something like 11PM GMT.   Quite
often the next thing that happens is that I get an email - why did "I"
unsubscribe somebody...what did they do that made me mad enough to throw them
off the list?  I hope I'm not really perceived by most as being that way.
Usually you just have to subscribe again, and hope that your ISP gets its act
together a little better and quits bouncing your email.  I've noticed that some
rural areas in the US, and places like OZ and SA where internet connections or
ISP diligence may be a llittle lacking, and I completely understand that.  Just
send an email to krnet-j...@mylist.net and you'll be right back on again.
Notice though that things have changed a little when rejoining...The list does
require a "real" name, address, phone number, and a sentence or two as to why
you want to join the list before I'll let you back on, mainly to prevent
spammers from subscribing, and also so I have some idea of who some of you are
who refuse to put sign your emails with some clue of who or where you are.  But
don't take it personally.

It was a perfect flying day in the Southeast today, so I flew over Tennessee,
almost to South Carolina, just taking in the scenery.  I also took a few
pictures, one of which is at the top of

Jeff Scott sent me a note asking if I was back, so I figured I would  let
everyone know I'm finally home from  my latest military deployment  to Iraq
and that my KR2S is back in the air.  But I didn't get  home until last
Tuesday the 29 of Sep, so I've missed two KR Gatherings in a  row, and yes I
was
bummed. I've stayed on the KR Digest and I did see where "Old  Blue" and the
one other plane crashed, very sad news but good to see Dan is  recovering
well.

Just this week I managed to get N1852Z back in the air. I had to replace
the entire exhaust system due to corrosion and age. I bought a few tubes from
Steve Bennett welded it myself. Yesterday was her 1st real flight in over
a year  after a thorough Annual Inspection. She was happy to see air under
her wings  again and so was I.

Deployment went very well. Things in Iraq are in much better shape than my
deployment in 2005. The Surge did a good job of cleaning out the bad guys,
and  the Iraqi Security Forces are now in charge in all the cities. While it
will  never be perfect, the violence levels are pretty low compared with
previous  years.

I'm taking a month vacation before I head back to work at my engineering
job. I dropped by there yesterday and it looks like no issues with going
back.  The economy has caused some layoffs, but my job was held for me.

Yep, I was planning on going into more detail when I started writing that
reply, but ended up hitting the "send" button before shutting the computer
off, not realizing I really hadn't finished it yet.  I'd have hoped that Dan
(and others on the list) have figured out what their peak EGTs are under
different throttle conditions, in order to get a feel for what's normal and
what's way too rich (much lower EGTs).  Just to make sure the carb is set up
properly and has a full mixture range, it'd be prudent to make sure you
could find a peak value and have enough mixture control to make the mixture
leaner on either side of peak temperature, by both going richer and leaner
than peak EGT.

Some people are probably flying way too rich and don't even know it, which
can lead to heavy carbon deposits and shorter cylinder wear due to
"washdown" from excess fuel.  Flying without an EGT meter is a recipe for
that kind of problem, because you'd really have no idea what your mixture
is, although I suppose you could adjust it by finding max speed at a given
throttle setting, come to think of it, again assuming you get less power at
both the lean and rich sides of max speed.

Of course some folks are flying without a mixture control at all, so maybe
I'm just getting all worked up over nothing, but I'd think judicious leaning
would save enough fuel to make a real difference over the life of the
airplane to justify a "proper" aircraft carb.  Well that's another can of
worms better left tighly closed...

In Army flight school after a course in altitude physiology, we went into an

hypoxia's. I remember thinking I should put a mask on then thought to myself, I
feel fine. Next thing I knew the instructor was holding a mask on my face. You
could tell from my hand writing that I was getting very hypoxic but the

Each individual is affected differently by the lack of sufficient oxygen.
Take a High Altitude Physiology Course such as offered by the FAA in Oklahoma
City or The one at
the Aviation Physiology Training Unit at Tyndall AFB in Florida. ( See my web
page:
 http://www.awesometrvl.com/high_altitude_flight_physiology.htm )

In a training course, each person gets to see the effects of oxygen
deprivation on themselves.  Ability to do simple math and reasoning problems,
color blindness, loss of coordination, etc..  It will make you a believer in
oxygen systems.

I always heard the story of how the FAA came up with the requirements
for supplemental oxygen being a middle aged DC-3 crew that was

"I flew a Maule yesterday and it wore me out."

I flew a Cherokee 140 yesterday for 1.5 hrs. with a friend who is a designated
examiner as a phase check for renewing my CFI. My altitude control was
atrocious, my maneuvers were about as bad. I was also wore out. Got a new
battery for the KR yesterday, installed it and turned the master and ignition
on and heard the furl pumps clicking so I have officially started working on
the KR again. Still have a lot of other projects to do around the house so KR
work will be at a slow pace for a while.

See all you at the gathering.

I have never been to Oshkosh but I do intend to go some day/year. I have been
to Sun-N-Fun several times and will continue to go, maybe not every year but I
will return because aviation, to me, is much more than just a KR. 2009 will be
my 10th year coming to the KR gathering. My KR is not y et flying and I have to
say I learn something new each time I go to the gathering. The first few years
was to learn about KR but now it is more people and the friends I have made
over the years that continues to draw me to the gathering. The KR is a
wonderful airplane but the people who build and fly the KR are great people and
fun to be around.

KR> New house update

2009-07-22 Thread jack.cooper2009

First thing, I'm not talking of replacing the KR gathering. It is (IMHO) idealy
located so that east and west coasters can make it. East Tennessee would be a
very long flight for west coast residents, although they would be more than
welcome if they want to fly in.  I'm trying to get a feel of when it should be,
and yes it may be 2009 or 2010. This is a busy time of year with Oshkosh, the
gathering and then the  holidays so doesn't leave much time for a fly-in so
maybe spring 2010 would be better.

KR> A week of no KR

2009-07-05 Thread jack.cooper2009

Mark Jones, you make me jealous, a week on a beautiful lake with fish and
airplanes, then come home to fly a KR.  I spent the week working on hangar
doors and moving boxes. I did get in a couple of hours of flying one working on
getting a CFI renewed and another flying with a friend so I guess I can't
complain too much. I have started to look at the KR trying to figure out where
I left off and where to start working again. I have also spent some time trying
to get my hardware organized. Someone gave me some metal hardware cabinets so I
have repainted them and transferring my hardware from the old plastic
organizers to the metal ones. One of my organizers was completely spilled out
in moving so I have a lot of sorting to do.

KR> Wing Assembly Progress - NEW MANUFACTURER

2009-07-03 Thread jack.cooper2009

Steve

Glad to hear you will be at the gathering, we missed you last year. Also very
good to know you are in the KR business, I  hope you do well with it. It would
be good if you could sell plans even if you had to mark up the price a few
bucks for your shipping and handling cost. I think most people would rather pay
a few bucks extra and know that they will get the plans in a timely manner.

Hi Tim,

Yes, still have the EZ.  Finally finished the engine overhaul and am
currently breaking it in.  My oil temps are still running high.  I am
planning on being at the Gathering this year.  I just am not sure if I will
be flying or bringing product.  I may demonstrate the "Box to Boat" concept
during the Gathering and build one right there. We would sell it to anyone
wanting a jump start on their project.

Regards,

Steve

Well, since the subject of wings has come up, I might as well let the cat
out of the bag.  In addition to Dan D's wing skins, Rand-Robinson wing skins
are also available and much more affordable than previously listed.

I have recently acquired all tooling/ molds for all prefabricated components
for the KR series of aircraft.  This includes canopy frames, turtle decks,
wing skins, fuels tank, Revmaster Kr-2 and KR-2S and standard KR 2 cowlings,
basically all of it.  Jeanette and I have reached an agreement where as I
will now own the mold and will produce/ supply components, parts, and
possibly more.  Further details will have to wait until Jeanette returns
from her trip at the end of July for the details to be ironed out.

We plan on offering several services from builder's assistance to assembly
of aircraft right here in our facility.  Once we have had a chance to finish
setting up shop, Parts and supplies should be more readily available and
communication a bit easier.  We are working on a web site so those who wish
to do so can order online.

The parts have previously been constructed from honey comb and pre-preg
which has kept the price climbing.  They are pretty parts and great if going
on a Lancair but it is over kill for the KR series of aircraft as well as
builders budgets.  The new parts will be Last-a-foam core and vacuum bagged.
Still plenty strong and light as evidenced by Dan Diehl's wing skins.  We
will be using epoxy as opposed to vinylester resin.

There are several other exciting thing planned which include "Box to Boat
TM" fast build kits you can assemble in 2 to 3 days. There will be very
limited jigging and you will be ready for your plywood skins in no time.

Well, there it is lots of new exciting stuff in the works.  If anyone is in
need of any prefab or custom parts just send me an e-mail off the net and I
we'll get you rolling (or flying as the case may be.J )

Happy Building!

KR> KR in the hangar

2009-06-19 Thread jack.cooper2009

Well I have been in the new home for about 2 weeks now so today I moved the KR
into its new hangar. Unfortunately it is having to share the hangar with a lot
of boxes that haven't been unpacked so there still isn't too much working room.
It had been in a neighbors hangar across the runway for about a year and 8
months and has had no attention so when I brought her home the first thing I
did was pull the cowling off and rinse off the complete airplane and engine to
remove months of dust and bird droppings. Now to figure out where I left off.

I took my BFR last week and am supposed to fly with a neighbor in a cherokee
tomorrow, weather premitting. My neighbor with the Cherokee does not have his
private license yet so I will start on renewing my CFI next week so I can give
him some lessons. Flying a spam can  is better than no flying.

I would like to have a KR fly-in some weekend but still have a lot of setteling
to do before I'll be ready for that.

I promise to do another new house update soon. Now what box did I put the
camera in???
