If you are not receiving things posted to the krnet site, then something

You can contact the net administrator to straighten it out, here:

If krnet mail is going into your trash or spam folders directly, maybe adding

KR> Help for KR Building

2016-11-14 Thread laser147 at juno.com
> "And don't be led astray by pictures of KRs or anything else. Those

girls in TV soap ads are barely real."

Oh yeah . . . they're real. You just need to be a little younger for
them to smile at you with anything other than pity.

As for planes, the KR is almost always passable (except for that one with
the tiger teeth markings that showed up from Ft. Smith, AR). That was a
truly ugly one, (but with character) and at least it was a taildragger.

Here's a couple pictures of mine (Ken Cottle, builder, not me) I uploaded
to my photo host. I need to add some more photos to the site - will do
so with time.

https://goo.gl/0snwAH
Mark Jones, I'm sad to see you and your many years of "Yaa Hoo's!" pass
on into the sunset, if that's what you're doing. Maybe you just came
into some money and are buying that new Cirrus Jet (or better yet, an
Eclipse 550 - much more plane for the money. It's a little baby
Learjet.). I sure would (the Eclipse 550, not the Vision Jet) if I had
the money. Anyway . . . you've contributed at least two KR's that I
know of to the world KR population so I congratulate you for all you've
brought to our world and wish you the very best with whatever you are up
to.

I have been thinking about Phil Hill's unsuccessful search for help for his
KR project and a few points come to mind.

Cal Parker in his plans and instruction booklet tells those who would build
a Teenie to go out to the airport and look at airplanes. Go into the shops
where airplanes are apart. Look at everything because every designer has
the same fundamental problems. Besides Cessna and Piper look at the
Citations and Lears too.

Look at other stuff like boats and race cars. Their problems are not unlike
airplane problems.

A couple stories. It's a few years ago when crossing the border wasn't the
hassle it is now, Peter, who is building a KR, and I flew to Toledo to what
was billed as a KR flyin.

As it worked out, there was one KR and to sum up, it was no thing of
beauty. KR builders have a sanding song. This plane looked as though the
builder had laid the fiberglass on the foam and patted it on with the heal
of his hand. But he got into the plane and flew away.

I listened to Chris Heintz of Zenith tell about standing with some members
of the French equivalent to Transport Canada or whoever and one them said,
"Look at this." One could see just by looking at it that the plane was
crooked. And the owner got in and flew away.

So don't be frightened. Remember, it's only an airplane. As they say, "it's
not a piano."

And don't be led astray by pictures of KRs or anything else. Those pretty
girls in TV soap ads are barely real. They probably use pictures of
different girls to make the ad, a face from one, an arm from another, and
so on.. So when one looks at a picture of part of a KR or other, one is
seeing only that part. The part you see might be beautiful but for the
rest, it might be a good thing to keep it hidden.

Finally, there is the "three times rule" Don't be ashamed to make something
three times, once to sort out how to make it, once to make it right, and
once to make it to the standard you want to maintain. No one ever admits
that. And even though spruce has become expensive, working with it is more
productive than nearly anything else you might do which means it isn?t
expensive after all.

I read this and went and looked at nV aero site, and read the latest update
from Jan 10. This update kind of explains the situation. I think what we have
is an honest, sole source for KR parts and supplies, with lead times which can
vary widely. I went through this with another aircraft supplier (long lead
times, not great communication), who is highly honest guy who just couldnt keep
up and, in my opinion, needed to do way better at business communication. I
dont know if this post will help, except that it shows we are not alone with
KR's. Maybe I should order my plans now, way ahead of time.
Parts and Plans
Availability.http://www.nvaero.com/blog/parts-and-plans-availability/
Posted on January 10, 2015Parts and and plans lead times may vary considerably
depending on our workload and suppliers. We are not a large company with
several employees. nV Aero is a company operated by one person with assistance
from local shops and people who want to provide support to the KR community.
This is more a labor of love as opposed to a money making venture. We have a
real job outside nV Aero to pay the bills and keep the lights on. If you have
any questions on parts or builder support, email is the best mode of contact.
If you call, leave a message as our availability during the day is limited due
to working a real job. Any profit made from the sale of parts and supplies goes
directly back into materials and fabrication of parts to ensure the continued
support for the KR series of aircraft. Threatening phone calls or emails will
not help. Please be patient, you will receive your order. Sincerely,nV Aero

Unfortunately not all tablets have an actual GPS chipset in them. In these
cases the "location services" are provided by what cell tower they are
connected to. You really have to look at the specs an these tablets to
make sure they have REAL GPS on them. I know the ASUS tablets have GPS on
them. There are others, some of the Nexus and Samsung tablets do. Not
sure about the thousands of others out there.

Having seen no serious reply to you question I'll give you what
little advise I can. Prop bolts are not necessarily "special", just
longer. Not sure what grade they are but usually see them listed as
"prop bolts". Check Aircraft Spruce, Wicks, or some of the prop
makers sell them. Saber prop extension lists them also. Critical
factor is getting them the correct length for your setup.

A bit of research on the net should get results.

I don't have my finished-up can of vinylester with me, but I'm pretty sure
it says 5 CC's of resin per pint, rather than 5 ounces! I don't think my
gallon came with but about 3 ounces total of catalyst anyway. I'm guessing
that five ounces could cook off and cause a small thermonuclear explosion
that could possible take out 4-5 neighboring hangars in about two
nanoseconds after mixing. So assuming my memory isn't completely gone on
this, I used a tiny syringe about half the size of a pencil, which was
something like ONE cc for the whole thing, graduated in tenths of a cc. I
mixed 4 or 8 ounces at a time to do my fuel tank, because any more than that
would go exothermic and harden solid in 12 minutes in the hundred degree
heat of my hangar this summer. I found that 1cc syringe in some old stuff
of Jim Hill's, and my veterinarian brother confirmed that he uses them on
occasion. Local farm coops are known to sell syringes, and even the drug

KR> Help Needed mixing Vinyl Ester

2010-10-18 Thread Dan Heath
My instructions that came with the VE say 5oz to a pint. No way I need to
mix a pint at a time. Also, the only convenient way I have to measure it,
is by weight, like I do with AeroPoxy. Does anyone know how many drops or
what, go with how many OZ or Grams of VE.

On the first day of every month you should recieve an email from the list
telling you some general information, including your password, although I
don't see that in my Inbox for March 1st, so maybe they quit doing that.
The link at the bottom of all messages ( http://www.krnet.org/info.html )
explains the process in the first sentence on the page, which is to visit
http://mylist.net/options/krnet and ask for your password (near the bottom

To Whom it May Concern in KRnet

I have not recieved KRnet e-mail since the 7th Oct.

I thought that it was fixed when a number of you reply to my call for
help previousily. However I only received those e-mails sent to me
directly and not via KRnet.

My ISP has suggested that KRnet has drop me of the send list or KRnet
has blacklisted me.

Can the KRnet IT guru please check that KRnet is indeed sending KRnet

Hello all,
I would like to say I never cease to be amazed at how our Net friends will pull
together and help out someone when they need it. I can not tell you how many
responses and phone calls I have had about needing bearings by this weekend.
All of you should feel proud that we have such a good group of aviators that
are friends to each other. This is a fine example of how the Net should be
used. I would also like to say that I have a set of bearings being shipped
tomorrow my way on Fed X from the beautiful state of Tennessee. Again, thank
all of you for your responses and being dedicated to the cause. Let's all keep
building and helping each other and all of us will live our dream some day.

2008-10-12 Thread Colin Rainey
John
Look like things were bent to clear stuff and then others had to be bent to
work. My suggestion is to cut an access panel opening as I did, and remove
the assembly, straighten the parts, and then re-heat and cool gradually to
re-temper (one of the engineer types jump in with specifics). Also, you need
to add a 1 inch spacer to that pushtube to improve the actuation and lessen
the wear on that bearing end. While you are at it, move the connection of
the actuation cable inboard 1/2" like Larry Flesner and I did to make sure
you will get full deflection of 15 degrees up and 20 degrees down.

KR> help with aileron linkage

Yes, it certainly could have been better built. It is crooked, how does it
operate? Does it bind? The thing that I would be concerned about would be
wear, and then an issue could arise. Re-building it would be a good thing
to do, and is not difficult, since you have to repair that part of the wing
anyway.

Is there anything wrong here? I did NOT
build this, but it looks crooked to me.

Any ideas?

No binding, it seems smooth and solid.
It seems to me that the hinge pin ought to
be parallel to the rear spar.

Could this have happened if the builder had
temporarily over tightened the cables?

I don't fly currently, I haven't flown for nearly
10 years (well, except my RC models). I just bought
this plane and it needs fixing up. So, I.ve been reading
the current FARs and AIM to get updated, and working
on this plane.

Unfortunately there is no single wiring diagram that anyone
can send you. Every KR will be different. If you're building
you will have to draw one up as you go. For a KR already
built you will have to figure it out as you go when troubleshooting
a circuit. Check out the site that Dan Heath posted and also
check the archives for hundreds of posts on the subject. The
plans give a "suggested" wiring diagram but again, each KR
will be different. Get a copy of Tony Bingelis' books if you don't
already have them as they are a good source and are easy
to understand. If you are "electrically challenged", find someone
in the local EAA chapter that can help you out.

Good luck

I would suggest that you look over what you have before ripping it all out. I
believe you said you bought a project and it is already wired. Unless you want
to start over you probably want to understand what is done and use what is done
rightrather than starting over. Someone may have put a lot of work in there and
unless it's really screwed up a lot of it may be useable. If it is all screwed
up you may want to look closer at the rest of the work he did. I've found out
the hard way that it's always better to look before you leap.Steve BrayJackson,

Using another long wire, disconnect the wires on both ends and do a
continuity check. Mark the wires and draw up your schematic as you go.
You can even check to see if you have commonality with other circuits.

You could also buy an inexpensive multimeter from RadioShack/ACE/heck, even
Wall Mart... You would have an opportunity to check a lot of other things
than just continuity for about $20. They even come with (gasp!) instruction
manuals.

Luckily I was able to remove the aluminum gas tank from my KR-2, now I can
really get at the wiring problem. Except for the electric elevator trim wiring
and the intercom, it should be a snap.
By the way, I have 600+ hours in a Kitfox taildragger, and
several hours in an RV-4. I think they are about the same in the handling
dept.
Is the KR with 2" extended engine more or less twitchy?

KR> "HELP" /FIBERGLASS CLOTH

2008-10-12 Thread Larry H.
Randy, most of this stuff should be in the archives but here is a quick lesson.
Selvage edge=the two edges of the cloth as it comes off of a roll of material.
Unidirectional cloth=most fibers running in one direction off of a roll of
material/parallel with the selvage edge with some fibers running perpendicular
just to hold the main fibers in place.

Bidirectional cloth=strands of fibers interwoven, some strands running parallel
to selvage edge and some running perpendicular to the selvage edge. Some cloths
have equal numbers of fibers running both directions, some have more numbers in
one direction or the other.

Biaxial cloth=two separate layers of unidirectional fibers running at 45
degrees to the selvage edges at 90 degrees to one another. These two layers are
lightly stitched with crossing fibers just to hold the two layers in place. In
the old days you had to lay down one layer of unidirectional cloth, wet it out
with resin then lay down a second layer and wet it out. This fabric is great
for covering wing surfaces because when you roll it off of a roll onto a wing
the strands of fiberglass are already at two opposing 45 degree angles to the
leading edge of a wing for example.

Triaxial cloth=same as biaxial but has one layer of unidirectional strands
parallel to selvage edge.

Flox=is chopped up cotton fibers that can be mixed with already mixed resins to
create a thick structural filler for making structural joints.

Micro=micro spheres (glass balls is what I call them) mixed with already mixed
resins to form a light weight filler (like bondo).
The fiberglass cloth is laid on the surface before the micro cures. (then add
more pure resin to wet out cloth)
This is usually used to cover the foam surface, which is porous, before you lay
fiberglass cloth on it. The reason for this is to save weight. You can use pure
resin over foam surfaces but it will run down into the porous surface of the
foam and make your part heavier. If you use the micro mix over the foam first
it will fill the pores of the foam and save weight. You can use micro like you
would use bondo to fill low areas that you want to level on a wing or fuselage
surface. You can use micro to fill corners where you need to adjoin (for
example) a wing rib to the spar.

Wetting out cloth=I usually lay the cloth onto my parts then wet out with
resin, but sometimes depending on the situation lay pieces of cloth on plastic
and wet out with resin, then pick up the whole thing and lay it on the part,
then peel off plastic. It is a personal preference as to how you proceed.

Landing gear=fiberglass landing gear legs are made from unidirection fibers.
The bidirectional or biaxial cloth are used to wrap around the leg to help
contain the unidirectional fibers from seperating or splitting apart. It makes
the leg stronger is the bottom line.

Hope this gives you some directions to think about.
Larry H.

2008-10-12 Thread Ed Janssen
Randy and Others,

If you are just getting started working with fiberglass, "Fiberglass and
Composite Materials" by Forbes Aird is a good reading source. It seems to
cover most of the basic knowledge working with fiberglass, Kevlar, Carbon
Fiber, different kinds of resins (polyester, vinylester, epoxies), health,
safety, lay-ups, molds, etc. - and it is very easy reading. I see that
Steve, at Great Plains, sells it for $16.95 plus shipping. Barnes and Noble
and some others can probably find a used copy for you as well. Even if
you've worked with these materials quite a bit, the historical aspect is
interesting reading.

I would be inclined to use my laminate trimer/router with a 1/8th round

KR> HELP NEED ADVICE!!!

2008-10-12 Thread cahil...@union.edu

Hi I am currently in the proccess of buying a KR-2. Before I seal the deal I
have a few questions regarding some components of the aircraft.

-First the engine is a HAPI vw conversion equiped with a slick magneto model
#4216. I had heard some sqwaks regarding cracking of such models??

-Secondly the carb is a tilloston om-41a. Has anyone heard anything about
these, I believe they were widly used by chrysler and on outboard boat
engines.

-Third when taking a close look at the wings there are slight dips in the
glass covering between each rib on the upper air foils. It slightly resembles
what a fabric covered wing would look like. Is this normal?

I appreciate any information or advice in regards to any of these components.
Thanks, Ryan Cahill

It's not "normal" but I have seen flying KR's with similar characteristics.
I'm guessing but I suspect that the "low spots" are actually the rib locations.
When the wing foam is not adequately supported between the ribs the
weigh of the sanding board causes it to depress. Because the rib locations
don't depress, the foam is sanded at that spot more quickly and when the
board is removed the area between the ribs comes back up. Remember,
this is only a guess and may no actually apply to your situation. Unless
it's really bad I wouldn't consider it a "deal killer" but it is something you
will notice every time you look at the wing. You be the judge. If the price
is right, you could consider rebuilding the top surface of the wings.

As far as the 4216 mag, It is hard to get parts and very hard to internally
time. I would replace it with the 4316 from Great planes. 549.00 plus
shipping. Spruce has it for the same price but they want to do the core
charge thing. Also the is the argument about DUAL ignition. I have just
put the light speed engineering electronic ignition on my KR2 with a soon to
be shipped 4316 mag as secondary.

Ps does anybody need a slick 4216 mag for a core??
PPS there is a AD out on the 4216 mag for the coil. If it orange it is
supposed to be bad. Do a google search on "magneto slick 4216" and it will
fall out.

Now I've got 80 hours on it and have taken it home to add wing stub fuel tanks,

I bought a KR2 project that I thought I would have flying in 5 months -
that was late 2000. So in April 2--4, I bought a ready to fly Q2. I hope it
will make its first flight this month. After the 40 hours, I can go back to
work on the KR. It had wings that would not fit the attachments. I now know
that the original builder put in the back attachments in backwards ( they
face aft). I used to think that I underestimated time by a factor of 5 I wish!

KR> Help please! High Speed Miss

2008-10-12 Thread Jeff Scott

Brian,

Don't know if this will be helpful or not, but is something to check. Under
certain circumstances, my KR (gravity feed fuel system) used to either stumble
or shut down during high speed passes and would re-fire as soon as the speed
bled off. It turned out that the vent for the header tank was in a position
such that when I would get the speed up around 175+, I would get a sufficient
negative pressure draw on the vent line which would stop the fuel flow to the
carb. A minor relocation of the fuel vent to ensure positive pressure at all
speeds is all that was necessary to fix the problem.

BTW, are you going to get your KR to SWRFI? Weather permitting, mine will be
there.

I don't know diddley about Revflows, but everything you describe so far
sounds like insufficient fuel flow. Wide open throttle only, right? Is it
gravity feed? If so, I'd do a fuel flow test and make sure you have more
than enough (I think the rule is at least 50% more flow than WOT would
require). That's a start though. Is it better with a full tank than near
empty? That would be another clue. ?That's where I'd start...

It's nice to make it a family affair.

My neighbor also helped a little with his 13" planer.

How many of you have had help, and to what degree?

I'm trying to do as much as possible myself.

Hi Duncan, I got my 5/8 spruce from A.S/S and it comes in 14 foot long
sections...18 of them. That's plenty for lengthening the fuselage.

I'm ordering the rest of the spruce today as a matter of fact. You will have
the most fun in your life putting this stuff together. It has been so telling
about myself with regards this process. I have tried to make each piece as
precisely as possible and there is great fun in that. More than I would have
thought.

KR> Help needed to get me started...

2008-10-12 Thread Duncan

Hi there,
As Scott Cable has indicated, I am no longer able to purchase his excellent
project, and have to revert to the original
intention: scratch-building. The reason? SCD (Sudden Cash
Deficiency). My Toyota MR-S sports car which was to finance the purchase
of Scott's KR project was badly damaged by a prospective buyer, who left me
with damaged goods and many bills to pay. Yes, it isn't fair, and yes, I'm
pursuing legal remedies - but nothing comes cheap or quickly.

So, it's back to the plans, the boat, and lay-ups. So, some timely help
will be very welcome.

Lee,

Grind off all of that old foam and glass that was between the lower rudder
and the lower tail post. Bond a new tail post right to what's left of the old
one. When you remount your rudder hinge use bolts long enough to go all the way
though both the new spar and the old spar and add a couple of though bolts
with large area washers at the top of the old spar. If you really wanted to
beef
if up you could add a plywood doubler to each side of the fuselage with a
nice chaffer on the leading edge. After you reinstall you H/S and repaint no
one
will ever notice that it's there.

KR> Help with a fix

2008-10-12 Thread Stephen Jacobs
Hey Lee

It has been said a few times now - sacrifice what is left of the VS
trailing edge (rudder post) by drilling loads of holes into it and
breaking it out (carefully) bit by bit - leaving the overlapping ply
sides and Fuselage 5/8" spruce untouched and free of adhesive.

Start off with the replacement post a fraction over size and work it
down until it fits neatly.

Use the old top part as a template for re-locating the hinges.

Measure three times - cut once.

Don't forget to static balance.

I stared at the pic but cannot see what you were pointing out - what is
(was) wrong with the hinges - loads of slop?

Good luck
Steve J

Netters,

As some of you know, I'm re-dong a plane that is now 20 years old. I had to cut
through the rear post of the V/stab. I know need to re-attach a new post. you
see what I'm working with at the following link. http://vandyke5.com/tail.htm
go to the last photo.
Any Ideas will be appreciated and considered,,, well most of them.
