All about Vietnamese Translation for Apache OpenOffice

2013-08-20 Thread Mr. Phan Anh
By starting the translation, I realized that we have an issue in here. That
's the name of our project.

Through out the missing translation entries and current ones, the name of
Sun Microsystem or Oracle usually appear in the Pootle.

I think we should replace all the phrases and the strings that contain "Sun
Microsystem" or "Oracle" to become "Apache OpenOffice Project" to avoid
unnecessary retranslation.

Sun Microsystem and Oracle have been changed in the orignal english text,
unless a few places where its still correct. Those places must be
maintained, so you cannot search/replace automatically.

However since your PO files was inherited from version 3.4.1, the NL part
will not have changed.

Please look at the english text and translate accordingly. You will find
that the english text uses:
a) Apache OpenOffice
b) OpenOffice
c) AOO

Apache OpenOffice project should not be in use.

Re: All about Vietnamese Translation for Apache OpenOffice

2013-08-20 Thread Mr. Phan Anh
I knew about that, some entries also include the name of Oracle and Sun,
and if there were those string, I kept that.
But, most of them are wrong, that is the reason why I want to discuss about
the change for our system.

Its hard to discuss when you dont provide examples. I just had a look at
the english strings.

In UI english template files, there are no strings with "sun microsystem"
strings, and 18 strings with "oracle".

In the "vi" PO files there 18 strings with "oracle", and 3 with "sun
microsystem" (these or only in the "vi".

To me it seems correct.

We do not change english strings for the 4.01 release. 4.0.1 is a micro
release, and changing an english string, would require all languages to be
translated again.

I propose you make a bugzilla issue (our incident system),
https://issues.apache.org attach the strings (filename + english text),
then I or some other developer will look at if for the 4.1 release.

I suggest you add a english user profile to your installation, that gives
you a couple of advantages:
a) you can see how a string is used in the english version, and dont need
screenshots.
b) once you get a "vi" version you can switch fast between en/vi and
control your translation.

When you ask about a given translation (which many does), please always
provide the filename/path and stringid, that makes it possible to find the
place where you have a problem. Many words are used differently in
different strings and must be translated differently (at least for danish).

There are a small number of 3.4 strings where the english text have changed
(f.x all strings with Oracle and sun microsystem). They should all be
marked as "needs works".

On the translate screen, you have a search filter at the bottom, use
catagory "needs work", then you should see all 3.4 strings that have
changed.

These are technical terms. They refer to text that appears to be
raised or sunked into the page. OpenOffice mimics these real-world
effects.

So the allowed values of "Relief" are:

"No relief" -- normal text

"Embossed" -- this is when paper is stamped from behind to show a
raised surface. You can see some examples here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paper_embossing

"Engraved" is to cut an image into a surface. Like carved letters in stone.

The word "relief" in this sense means: "The projection of figures or
forms from a flat background, as in sculpture, or the apparent
projection of such shapes in a painting or drawing."

There is a direct link to the actual record in the footer of Pootle.
Please copy the link and post it here. Then it is clear, about what term
you are speaking. Some English words have different meanings, dependent
on the context. I can tell you then, what the meaning is.

Is it 1) or 2)

1. "XY" = "ZT" (without space between Z and T)
2. "XY" = "Z T" (with space between Z and T)

When I worked with other projects on Transifex, I often use the 2)
solution. The other maintainers of those project also give me the solution
of 2).
But I wonder: what is the solution/rule in AOO?

When a string is no longer needed, it is typically either changed to "-"
(whilch you will also find) or "" (as you have found)

This is done for 2 reasons:
1) If it was a mistake, and the developer finds out, it can be activated
again, without having to merge all NL.
2) not to break compabitility, if removed we would need to update all NL,
which is quite a job.

They are normally deleted just before translation start on a new release
(not micro release == no string changes), and as far as I know it happened
like that with 4.0.

So you right, they should, and will, be removed, its just a matter of
timing.

When I look at the examples you provide XY, I would go for 2), but let me
give you another example just to be sure:

"PostalCode" would translate to "post nummer" in danish if used
in a sentence, but if used as a indicated name it would be "postnummer".

so no rules without exceptions. I find this this is actually one of the
more difficult parts of translation, some languages tends to split the
words, where other use both prefix and postfix to modify the word.

We are all volunteers in AOO, some people invest a lot of time, some less,
typically it varies, but its all welcome and bring us forward. Thats the
great thing about ASF, its like having a job with no big boss telling you
what to do. Any pressure you feel come from yourself.

Going through all strings is a major task and nobody expect you to finish
that before 4.0.1. Remember once you are finished with translation you also
need to do some testing, for that you will need at least a language pack,
which many in here can generate.

Remember "good things take time".

One approach is to complete the existing translation for AOO 4.0.1,
and use that as a way to get more people interested in the Vietnamese
translation. If we have more people working on it then it would be
possible to do a re-work of the translation for 4.1.

So use the 4.0.1 translation as a "hook" to get more interest in the
task. For example, we could publicize this on our project blog,
Facebook page, etc. There may be Vietnamese tech sites we can use as
well, providing interviews for them.

The strings belong to the presenter console. To use the presenter
console, you need to have a second monitor, usually a projector.
Configure it so, that they are independent, not that the projector is a
clone of your PC monitor.

Launch Impress and load a presentation. Goto menu Slide Show > Slide
Show settings. In the lower part of the dialog you see the section
"Multiple Displays" and a field with label "presentation display". If
you have configured the two displays correctly, this field is enabled
and you can then choose which display shall show the presentation in
full screen.

Then start the presentation. The second monitor shows the presentation
in full screen and your monitor shows the presentation console. In the
presentation console, you have a button at bottom, right to call the help.

The help is on screen and shows what shortcut keys have what meanings.
The strings you have posted belong to this help.

If the presenter console don't work for you, please ask here. If it is
indeed an error, write an issue. The presenter console is no longer an
extension but integrated and should work. You find it in source code in
the folder main/sdext/source/presenter.

Hi Phan Anh,

an addition that might help you: The issue 121873 has a macro attached.
It is included into an empty text document. When you run that macro,
your AOO installation is changed in a way, that it shows the presenter
console when you run a presentation.

When you run the macro a second time the change is reversed and you get
the usual view of the presentation.

With this macro you can explore the presenter console without a second
monitor.

Kind regards

When I look at the examples you provide XY, I would go for 2), but let me
give you another example just to be sure:
"PostalCode" would translate to "post nummer" in danish if used
in a sentence, but if used as a indicated name it would be "postnummer".

Yes, in these two cases they are "machine names" that are supposed to be
without spaces since they seem to be field names (but I didn't look deep
init) and in those it's better, for compatibility, to avoid spaces.
Anyway, this is a particular case.

Commenting on the other remarks about Vietnamese: if you manage to get a
4.0.1 out with the same quality as what already exists, it is very
likely that you can use it to gather some more people to review the
translation. So I would recommend to target 4.0.1 too for the initial
translation and focus on the review for 4.1.

In the name of English part in AOO 4x. We only have this entry "English"

Should we seperate those things in British English/American English/

We do currently have different types of english, but since there are no
active NL communities only en-UK is uploaded to pootle.

Remark en-UK is a real translation (however small) from the source language
which is en-US.

So yes we should indeed separate is it is done now, more en versions might
follow later.

Whoever "takes charge" is "in charge". We're a meritocracy.
Sometimes we call it a "do-ocracy". Those who do the work are in

I wonder is this an issue?

Besides, the strange structure keeps one more weird thing.
That is, at the end of the ". XYZ: " is a space.
I have seen the space is marked with red mark in the translation.
I wonder in my translation, I have to keep the space at the end or I can

Please start AOO and take a Writer document. Look now where this string
is shown. You find it in the sidebar in the properties deck in the panel
"Page". It belongs to the toolbar item "Margin:". Wenn you open the list
and hover with the mouse over the items, you see a tooltip with the size
of the margins. The strings, which you have to translate, belong to this
tooltip. The dot is a delimiter between the parts. It is up to you to
decide, whether a dot is the right character for a delimiter in your
language. I don't know. Same for the space. Try out which form is good
to read, when all parts a concatenated.

But there are no forum admins and no moderators, both needed for a forum to
keep healthy. I am one of the vm-admins responsible for the technical setup

So technically it is running, if not please advice me, whats not running.

So the maintainers of OO (before Apache) decided to closed it, users have

look at
http://docs.translatehouse.org/projects/translate-toolkit/en/latest/commands/pofilter_tests.html#endpunc

Bear in mind many of these checks are false positives, it might very well
be that your language uses less or more punctations than EN-US.

See the checks just as a question mark, not as an error.

Would you like me to try to submit this translation ?

It might not be something you did. I just managed to get an unknown error,
with a couple of other VI strings.

I suspect one or more vi strings contain a multibyte combination that are
not defined in utf8, and that breaks firefox and probably also the database.

If it happens again, I suggest you open an issue, with a link to the string
causing the problem. Be aware the real problem might be +/- approx. 256
strings, it ifs a db issue. I dont think there are any pootle tools that
can help, so an admin needs to either check the db or the po files.

All the details are in my email. I just wanted to let you know that I had a
similar problem so you can report it if it happens again.

we both use utf8, it is possible to create multibyte character sequences
accidentally using ctrl and shift (look in windows help for the exact
combination), doing that may create non-supported multibytes which can be
hard to find without help.
