Used symbolically, 7 often denotes completion or perfection. Lacemakers
from around the world cooperating to complete an an entry would be pretty
perfect - whatever the subject matter.

2004-06-01 Thread Ilske und Peter Thomsen
Hello Lacefriends,
Very quick a bit about the festival.
It was for the first time in 1989, since then every three years on the
first weekend of june it take place and it lasted three days.
In january 18th 1990 the society was founded and admits interested
individuals, societies and institutions. The subscriptions covers a
period of three years. Sorry I couldn't find something about the fee.
Their purposes are to arrange the lacefestival and to take the
initiative in developing the lace-making art.
During the festivals they offer lectures in different languages,
workshops, excursions, the coffee table on friday evening and a banquet
saturday night.
There is allways a big salesroom and different lace organisation
present themselves.
On several places in town and around Tönder you can visit exhibitions.
And Tönder itself is worth to be visited (have a look at the webshots

http://community.webshots.com/user/arachne2003
During this days the shops have nice lace-decorations in their windows.
You will meet friends on every doorstep. You see its worth to come and
take part.
Hope you are eager now to come one year there.
Greetings
Ilske

[lace] Myth or Mystery Exhibition

2004-06-01 Thread Jane Read
My congratulations to the winners also - fabulous lace!

I emailed arachne on friday and the message seems not to have gone through.
Perhaps its just as well as I was rather upset and it probably sounded
horrible!

>I know there were lots of entries this time,
There were 266 entries in the competition - about 80 of them have not been
displayed.

Is there anyone else on Arachne who's work failed to make the exhibition?
You'll know because you will have received a letter telling you.

Has anyone heard how the work was chosen for display? Or rather why
particular pieces were rejected? Weren't they good enough? Didn't fit the
theme? Too big/too small/wrong size? Was it on the basis of the Judges
opinion? Or was it done by a Committee? The letter I received offered no
information about why my work had been rejected.

I've had work in the Lace Guild Exhibitions on and off since the early
'80's and I've never heard of lace being rejected before, so the letter
came as a real shock. For comparison, over 260 pieces were entered in the
1993 John Bull Competition, Lace and Nature.

>and I believe the ones that
>couldn't be displayed will be on show at The Hollies from mid July.
Jane (Partridge) is correct - according to the letter the work is being
put into storage at the Museum until it can be returned to The Hollies for
display from 16 July. Although this fact has not previously been advertised
so I don't know who they expect to visit.

After so much work it is such a disappointment. Those visiting the museum
please take time to look at the photo album. It represents one third of the
exhibition entry.

My winning piece is being displayed but not my "Wood Nymph". I went from
elation to depression, as I opened first one envelope from the Lace Guild
and then later the other from Coventry council. As you say there was no
indication why a piece wasn't being included other than space at the gallery
and the number of entries. I too am very disappointed not to have both
pieces displayed, particularly as many more hours went into the wood nymph
than the book. It was a physical struggle to make a piece of lace over a
polystyrene wig holder, and one I didn't much enjoy. But I quite understand
that if pieces needed to be cut, it was fair that I should only have one
piece exhibited.

Your work is beautiful and I'm sure it would have been more than good enough
to be displayed.

I guess the extra exhibition at the Hollies was a last minute decision when
they realised how many pieces they had to display. It is a real shame, and
you have my sympathy.

I am trying to find out how ot post pictures of mine at the Arachne webshots
page. Why don't we all add our photos of the "Myth or Mystery" pieces to the
site? At least that way we can all get them seen by the lace community
around the world, many of whom will not otherwise see them

[lace] Danish wedding gowns

2004-06-01 Thread Tune
Hi Everyone,
I managed to visit the exhibition of wedding gowns today at the royal palace
of Amalienborg, and if any of you are in Copenhagen, it is well worth a
visit. It is running until September. Crown princess Mary's dress is a
dream. The Carrickmacross lace veil is wonderful and as I mentioned earlier,
the same Carrickmacross lace was also the under the folds of her dress. The
Carrickmacross lace on Mary's dress was the same lace, which had been on the
front panel of Queen Margrethe's wedding dress in 1967. Queen Margrethe's
dress was also on display - minus the Carickmacross and also minus the
Tønder lace "Big Heart" trimming on her train. The lace had been removed
after the wedding to be kept for later use in the royal family. Queen
Ingrid's dress and Queen Alexandrine's dresses were also to be seen, but
they had no lace trimming. Beside Mary's dress was the beautiful Tonder
lace handkerchief made especially for her by Astrid Elton Hansen. It is
described in a very nice article in the latest magazine from the Danish Lace
Guild.
The Carrickmacross fan, handkerchief and another lace trimming, which
originally accompanied the veil, were also to be seen along with a beautiful
documentation of the gift from the women of Connaught. The lace was
originally a gift to princess Margaret of Connaught who was a grandchild of
Queen Victoria and daughter of Victoria's son, Prince Arthur, Duke of
Connaught and Strathearn.
There is a very nice and well illustrated small catalogue, which can be
bought at the exhibition for 45 Danish kroner (approx. 4 English pounds or 7
dollars). The catalogue has English and Danish texts.
I didn't have to wait in a queue to see the exhibition but there were quite
a lot of people. There was no limit to the time that one spent in the
exhibition and Mary's dress and veil were not under glass, as were the other
exhibits. You could buy a foto permit for a little extra and flash was
allowed.
I hope that some of you have the chance to see the exhibition. If you have
to drag your long suffering hubby along, there is also a permanent
exhibition of the private studies of Denmark's kings from 1863 up to the
last king Frederik 9th who died in 1972.
Unfortunately I wont be able to come to the Tonder Lace Festival this year
but I hope that it is a big success and that those of you who attend have a
great time.
All the best and keep bobbin' along from Avril

I forgot to say that I have *not* posted the Myth and Mystery stuff
on the French version of the web site yet. I need a translation of
the text on the first page (and some time). (For the same reason the
Lace Census Luggage Labels are also only on the English version.)
Might get round to doing them later, but we've got the April mag
extracts to do first.

I've done a little bit of tweaking with the MorM pages, so if anyone
has had any problems, go back, refresh/reload, and navigate slowly
through the gallery, reading the captions (there's magic happening
while you're looking at one pic that makes the next one appear
quickly).

[lace] Arachne lace project

Shirley Tregellas in Adelaide, S.Australia, wrote me the following note, but I'm
sending it on to the list because I think she raises a very good point, to which I
don't have a solution. My immediate thought was that this could be done as an
exhibition piece, not to be judged.

> This all sounds like a fantastic idea but I have a comment!

If Arachne works as a group, how can we keep the judges (whoever
they might be) from knowing what we are working on, assuming that
instruction and participation is via e-mail on Arachne. Or will the
messages be privately sent to only those who agree to participate. I
thought the origin of the competition pieces were to be secret until after
judging?

It really is a fantastic idea and would bring a lot of lacemakers
world wide together. And if the idea flows and we actually enter a piece,
please include my name in the group for a "small piece". I've been making
bobbin lace for 15 years so I'm what you might call 'intermediate' having
worked Torchon, Beds, Bucks, Honiton and Milanese. <

As both Clay and I have a reason to know, that's a solution which is
possible at the Virginia State Fair... But, is it possible at the John
Bull Trophy competition?

And there's one more thing to consider; someone else mentioned it early
on, but nobody's picked up on it so far. That is: will we be
*permitted* to enter a lace project as a group? Because we're not
*quite* like any other lace group in the world... :)

Clay has kindly offered to co-ordinate the international efforts but,
before she undertakes this job (which is likely to be of mammoth
proportions and 3-yrs duration), it would be nice to know that the
effort is worth-while. I think we'd need to know a bit more what is and
what isn't possible, before we plunge into the project.

So, is there anyone on the list who could answer such questions? Or
knows someone with the answers?

I would like to add my Contratulations to all those wonderful lacemakers who
won trophies at the Exhibition.
The standard is SO high. I was awarded a Medal of Excellence for my
needlelace (traditional - a Gros Point flower spray), and I am absolutely
"Over the Moon" about it. To have my work recognised in that sort of
company is quite amazing, and I feel very honoured.

How ever the judges managed to choose the John Bull Trophy winner from those
entries shown on the Guild web site, I don't know! It must have been a very
difficult task.

I am constantly amazed at the inventiveness of lacemakers, and the fantastic
ideas they have to fit into themes. What idea I had in my head, I could not
get down onto paper, so eventually I "went traditional"! It is the first
time I have entered - and now will try to think up something for next time!!

rest of us), is the A.C.T. also now officially a State??!!!

I'm disappointed in you. You should know there are two territories in

And there are seven states, plus one territory, here in
Australia. How 'bout that, Oz spiders?

[lace] Re: Seven...

Hi All, Don't forget the Seven Dwarfs! Personally, I'm thinking

Me, I like the sins (because of colour possibilities) and the Seven

I'm thinking about squares that fit together to
form the larger picture. Then some would be easier to make
to fill in the sky or the seven forests.
And I'm thinking that a 3-D project would open the project to more
participants (though it would be a nightmare to assemble and then ship
to its destination), *if* we're permitted to go ahead with it.

pattern drafting such a large project sounds like a nightmare!
Well, as I remember it, the *size* is "prescribed" by the competition
rules (though I don't remember what it is... Anyone?). That's why I'm
thinking a 3-D might offer more scope; an ordinary lace group is likely
to have maybe 10-15 members participating. If this Arachne project
"flies", we're likely to have many more. Even if we have a division of
labour (different people drawing overall pictures, deciding which
drawing to accept for the group, designing it in lace so the bits would
fit, parcelling out the bits, with instructions etc), it will still be
difficult to accomodate everyone.

Unless, of course, the whole idea becomes so popular, that most people
decide to enter individual projects, with a little "as inpired by
Arachne" note attached :) In which case, the organizers might, again,
not be able to exhibit everyone's entry...

[lace] Re: [lace-chat] The culture shock

2004-06-01 Thread Patty Dowden

Hi hi. That shouls be lots of fun.
By the way, why in the world does the army read their 24h clock in
hundreds?
Weronika
(confused in Caltech, Pasadena, California)
Dear Weronika and Tamara,
I am delighted by your insights. When I traveled in Germany a couple of
years ago, there were things that threw me for a loop.
The incredible sandpaper provided in the restrooms. Restroom attendants
who expected a tip.
The look on the waiter's face when I ordered non-alcoholic beer!

Anyway, I wrote to explain the military usage of hundreds for hours.
My dad was in the Navy for 30 years, so I always knew how to reckon time in
24 hours.

For the military, time is written in four digits
7:00 AM = 0700
4:00 PM = 1600
All those trailing zeros make time look like hundreds.
Single digit hours are spoken as "Oh eight hundred hours"
Double digit hours are spoken as "seveteen hundred hours"
And for the last obsessive detail
Really, really early is "Oh dark thirty"
