[lace] App for lace designers with Macs
I don't on a Mac, but I do own Knipling and Lace 2000/Lace R-XP. I've had a look at Jo's Bobbinwork. Have to say that I'm obviously among the less intelligent when to comes to computer programs. I get on fine with Lace 2000/Lace R-XP and have designed quite a few pieces with it, but, after a dozen or so attempts and many hours with Knipling, I'd just about managed to draw a straight line. So that's gathering dust in a cupboard. I have no idea what Jo's Bobbinwork is supposed to do. I'm probably being thick, but there doesn't appear to be any instructions/help file on what to do with it. I've managed to get a couple of grounds in the window from the sample files, but what I'm supposed to do with them after that, I don't know. There doesn't seem to be a simple way of drawing fans, marking rose ground, tallies, spiders, etc as there is with Lace 2000/R-XP, so I suspect it's intended for something more advanced than I'm interested in. I am ashamed to say that I have forgotten an Arachne person who has been so good to me about the bobbins found in Suffolk (Forgive me) I really want to know *when* they were found and I think the place was Ely (?). I do have a Mac and I also have Knipling (the Mac version) but like Jean I just don't get on with it and it's gathering dust on a shelf. From time to time I've looked at Jo's Bobbinwork, and had a dabble with EazyDraw but again I don't get on with them. Lace 2000/Lace R-XP has never been available for Mac. In the end I bit the bullet and bought Adobe Illustrator and I can do all I want with it including bending and stretching patterns drawn on conventional straight grids. It takes time to draw the basic pattern and I have several pre-drawn grids of dots to work with but the possibilities of what it can do are enormous. I have had a look at eazydraw this weekend and I must admit it's really not for me. I have an old version of Illustrator which I shall stick with and as I am a student at present I shall take advantage of the Adobe 80% student discounts and get CS5 very soon. [lace] Lace design program for Windows - mainly braid lace
Hello, last week I thought about another attempt of getting a lace design program for my laptop. I am still working with Windows XP. I am teaching once a week at a local school 8 afternoons. Occationally I would like to draw up easy braid patterns for the group. But since I am always short of time, I am thinking of drawing some motifs just to print out, whenever needed. Is this possible using the actural version of Lace 2000 or newer? Or is this program rather suitable for torchon lace patterns. I would also like to include some colourcode diagrams in my notes for the students. Is that possible in this program. And where can I get it? Best regards, Martina On 30 Jan 2011 at 8:24, Jean Nathan wrote: I don't on a Mac, but I do own Knipling and Lace 2000/Lace R-XP. I've had a look at Jo's Bobbinwork. I have no idea what Jo's Bobbinwork is supposed to do. I'm probably being thick, but there doesn't appear to be any instructions/help file on what to do with it. Under the links on the right of http://code.google.com/p/bobbinwork/ you will find links to user guides. I've managed to get a couple of grounds in the window from the sample files, but what I'm supposed to do with them after that, I don't know. You can make variants, such as reduce a vierge (or however that is claaed in English) to a roseground or whatever is in between. You can change the colors of threads to see how the threads run through the ground and plan some Dick durch dunn variation (http://tinyurl.com/4b935xg). A twist more or less can have a big influence. The how to is available in Dutch: http://tinyurl.com/6ezazgu A tinied automated translation: http://tinyurl.com/4jtvhpj If the slightly more computer literate contribute by adding an English translation or their own way of explaining, or even add more how to pages to the wiki, I might (don't hold your breath) get encouraged to resume development some day. There doesn't seem to be a simple way of drawing fans, marking rose ground, tallies, spiders, etc as there is with Lace 2000/R-XP, so I suspect it's intended for something more advanced than I'm interested in. These functions are not yet implemented. Please stop suspecting and start reading: compare the what and in practice on the home page http://code.google.com/p/bobbinwork/ following the link to the issues might be a bit too technical for you but that could also shed some light on my not yet implemented intentions. Except solving technical puzzles I desperately need gui designers to help thinking. [lace] Lace design program for Windows - mainly braid lace
Years ago, on our old machine (Windows 3.1 to start with, upgraded to 95!) I used version 2 of FastCAD, which I got on with very well. Time passed and first we bought a non HP printer, then the hard drive failed, and of course, by then it was obsolete and the version of FastCAD I was using wouldn't print with the new printer (a Xerox Phaser) anyway. After looking around at what was available as shareware (we couldn't afford the £400 to upgrade FastCAD at the time) I downloaded DoubleCAD - very similar to Turbocad. Yes, I'd got a program which with constant reference to the manual I could get a pattern out of, but it put me off sitting at the computer for hours trying to get something done. Last year, I gave up and bought Lace R-XP (my machine now runs Windows XP Pro) - we had downloaded the trial version some time before. What I have found is that the commands in Lace R-XP are very similar to FastCAD - so some things I can guess without needing to look up how to do. There is a feature for saving motifs - which means that yes, you would be able to print out just the motifs. You can use colours when you draw the pattern, then adjust the size and tell it whether you want to print in colour or black white in the print sequence. There is a full range of grid angles, - I use mine mostly for Torchon and Bucks (but I don't stick to 60 deg!). I Googled for Lace R-XP, which brought up IlSoft's website and details as to how to order online - the CD arrived in the post a few days later. Looking at mine now, it is compatible for Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP and Vista. I must admit from playing with the trial version (which you can't print or save from) I had at first dismissed it as not giving me the range of options I could get from a CAD program, but having bought the full version I am quite happy with it. (Other than using their product to design on my computer again, I have no association with this company). In message 4d4561d3.20325.d01...@martina.dewille.web.de, martina.dewi...@web.de writes I am still working with Windows XP. Re: [lace] Lace design program for Windows
I have being following this thread and I would like to add my two cents. I am a PC Windows XP user and I had designed with both Corel Draw and Illustrator, until I discovered the specific lace programs: first Lace Designer 3.1, and the update to Lace Designer Gold later Lace 2000,the last one of Il-Soft RXP, and Knipling from Petra Pönisch. I currently work with RXP or Knipling, depending of the drawing I have to do. I feel comfortable drawing geometrical patterns with RXP, because of the user friendly tool of layers and the possibility of printing according wit predetermined threads, but I do not like the polar grid solution that it brings. Knipling, although I have to admit that it is a more complex program, it is better solved, mathematically speaking, and this is something very important when working with curves and polar grids. Round grids, circles and ovals, the possibility to do equidistant ribbons, distort elements and other very interesting tools give me a lot of possibilities and surpass my expectation. Really, every program it is sure that will find the appropriate user and vice versa. I've just noticed that Lace X-RP now has a CD available of motifs for Torchon and Bucks Point, advertised at £9.99, but works out a bit more at £14.19 with £3.50 p p added because of the increase in VAT from 17.5% to 20%. If you want to send any message to several people without all of their addresses showing use the 'BCC' box (blind carbon copy) rather than the 'CC' box (carbon copy). Your system may require you to put at least one address into the 'to' box, but that can be the list address.
