[lace] Snowman lace
Hello All! Does anyone know the designer/source of a lace snowman? A friend sent me a photo she saw on Facebook & asked if it was bobbin lace! It's adorable & she wants me to make one. Obviously I'm pleased that she noticed it was BL! I posted a pic to Flickr--it should be the most recent entry in Photostream. Thx. [lace] Jacqui Southworth's Holly ornament
Hello All! I managed to work my way thru this very clever pattern but couldn't upload my photo to Flickr--404 error! Hope it's not something I did... Anyway, I wanted to share some info in case anyone else is going to give it a try. I had difficulty with the berries & think I may have identified the issue. Experts, please correct me if I'm wrong! Berry 1--after hanging in the red pair on a temporary pin, the red pair must enter from the right/work to the left to set the first/top/ringed pin in order to work the pattern as drawn, working to the right for the 2nd pin. Do-able but it was fiddly so I would redraw the berry to match the instructions. Berry 2--the red pair should enter from the right to set the first/top/ringed pin in order to work to the right to the 2nd pin. Berry 3--the red pair enters from the left as indicated in the instructions. I also used regular Iris silk pins & that proved to be problematic when tying off threads to be re-used in other sections. When I make this again, I will try the small Duchesse pins, although I'd prefer a thicker, more robust pin. The Madeira thread is quite strong & forgiving. That turned out to be good & bad! It held up to lots of snugging & didn't shred, a bonus in my book. In fishing-speak, however, I found it easy to get a backlash when the thread did not reel off the bobbin in an even manner. It also is a big springy so the leaves & berries are slightly curved inside the ring. If anyone has a suggestion on how to cure that, I'm listening! Has anyone worked this pattern with regular thread?? Otherwise, I love the ornament & was surprised at how easy it was once I got going. I will post a pic whenever Flickr is up & running again. I also enlarged the berry portions of the pattern if anyone wants to take a closer look at my thread path conundrum. Hope everyone is making something fun. I'm looking forward to seeing some of you in person next week in Ithaca. [lace] Bobbins--new Downton, Devon Trolly & Malmesbury
My bobbins arrived today & I am thrilled! John Aebi kindly made a few pairs of Downton, Devon & Malmesbury bobbins to go with my lace samples so I posted pics to Arachne Flickr. The Downton ones are bird's eye maple--spotted, sort of like the nitric acid/Aqua Fortis effect. Way cool. The others are a variety of woods (lilac, persimmon, satinwood, citrus & apple) & very smooth. Even my husband was impressed. High praise! [lace] Luton Lace Treasury Vol 1
Another sample finished & posted--yay! The Luton Treasury is a terrific way to experience this collection. And there are three more volumes--thank you Sally Barry! All are in the IOLI library, along with the Luton Museum book (photos of the collection), so I look forward to working more samples from each. Many thanks to Jocelyn who referred me to Underwood for help with my square tallies. They are somewhat improved, although tension-ing them in a sea of pins remains a challenge. In spite of my grooming efforts, errant loops appeared the moment the pins were removed. Ugh. Lyn Bailey has also promised to show me her Binche method of making them, by which time I shall be well & truly tallied. Between squares & leaves, I need to make hundreds--thousands?!--more to become proficient. After a bit more research, I now see there are ladder tallies & gate tallies--who knew? The gate style worked well for this pattern. Because the weaver finishes on the opposite side, it results in an! odd number of passes, therefore a slightly deeper tally. They are very pretty, sort of like an old fashioned hat veil with scattered dots. [lace] English point ground lace--Downton & Malmesbury
There are new Downton photos on Arachne Flickr thanks to Diane Williams! Thank you for posting the Ace of Clubs design & your work in progress with Downton bobbins. Lovely--now everyone can see what real Downton is supposed to look like! I received a nice email from Pompi Parry in which she pointed out some technical differences in Downton lace. She noted distinct differences in purl pins (picots) & in valleys. She also suggested plaiting to create a neater & more secure start. This is very helpful as I continue my samples. If lacemaking represents a series of problem solving exercises, it is interesting to note how many different solutions were achieved by lacemakers in competing areas. My first Malmesbury strips are finished & posted to Flickr. Heads up--if you make #2 Ladder Braid, start with the stitch for the inside pin rather than following the instructions verbatim. Ask me how I know! Otherwise, I had never made square tallies & these were in the center of strip #3 Ba! sket Filling. (Basket Filling is Malmesbury-speak for little tallies.) My leaf tallies are wonky but at least the cloth stitch start holds them together. It was fiddly to get the square ones started & I finally poked in two temporary pins to corral the pairs because the cotton thread was too slippery to get going. For me, that is a benefit of linen thread--it is slightly "sticky" & threads tends to hug each other. Not so with 140 cotton! If anyone has a suggestion for taming a square tally start without temp pins, please share as I'm concerned that this may not be the correct approach & will come back to bite me in an area of point ground. Many thanks. Sincerely, Susan Hottle FL, USA - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Downton Lace
Got it! Just seems like some waste would have been involved by having what would amount to "raw ends", start & finish. From an economic standpoint, preventing any waste of completed lace would have been desirable, hence my question. The start of my sample didn't look tidy & if I was the customer, I would not want to pay for that first bit. That's a loss to the lace dealer, the lacemaker or both. On the other hand, maybe the "bobbin clump" start would be more aesthetically pleasing in the hands of a more experienced lacemaker! LOL It would be interesting to see a demonstration of this lace using a bolster. So far, no Downton lace on YouTube... [lace] Downton Lace
Just finished my first tiny sample after noticing that this lace begins with a clump of single bobbins! I ended up with a start similar to Rosaline except with four groups of rolled bobbins instead of one. It's peculiar as there is no obvious place to hide the beginning tails when the work is complete. In Rosaline, the single tail gets cut off & the tuft is sort of sucked up into the back of the work. Since this is a straight strip, I put a knot in each tail & teased it down to meet the lace. Not sure how this would have been handled back in the day? Can only assume that any messy beginning would have been hidden in a seam. With 120 thread, I used Honiton bobbins & a cookie pillow as I was unsure of managing lightweight bobbins on a bolster pillow. The reverse catch pin was sort of interesting--in effect going backwards one pin before continuing forward. The gimp circles are called "eggs". The lace works up quickly & uses lots of pins so I took pins from the back. Does anyon! e make Downton lace & will you comment on it's techniques? This lace would be suitable for trimming fine cotton lawn garments, hankies or lingerie. Pic posted to Flickr. [lace] Malmesbury lace
Hello All! Does anyone know Joan Blanchard who wrote the book on Malmesbury? While I was re-reading her list of "characteristics", she mentioned several patterns that she had not seen outside Malmesbury. In my effort to make an authentic sample, I decided to make one of those first. While I was reviewing her prickings, I was most surprised to see that Annie's Pattern Malmesbury Fan on page 62 looked remarkably familiar to one I had received from Lorri Ferguson (for study purposes for Scottish lace) a few years ago. Bingo! The pricking Lorri sent is Lady's Fan, a New Pitsligo pattern from northern Scotland. My pic is posted to Arachne Flickr for comparison. It's not identical but oh so close! The distinctive column of holes in the middle of the fan is a feature I had not seen until I made New Pitsligo lace. My NP lace was made with Torchon ground & cloth stitch. The Malmesbury fan calls for honeycomb ground. The footside & the point at which the fan meets the footside are als! o slightly different. As I recall, I worked footside on the left but perhaps Lorri will clarify. Malmesbury foot is on the right. If anyone knows the author & thinks she might be interested in this info, please share. [lace] Malmesbury similarities?
While my Bedfordshire was resting, I started reading Malmesbury Lace by Joan Blanchard. After the history section, I turned to the patterns & my eyes nearly popped out. Pattern #1 is called Flemish Centre Braid & several years ago, I purchased vintage lace that is similar. At the time, I couldn't understand why someone would make so many yards of ultrafine 5/16" ivory lace. Apparently narrow Malmesbury lace was used to join wider pieces of lace or for joining two pieces of fabric. Not that I own Malmesbury lace, but it's certainly an interesting explanation for the form. I've re-posted a pic to Arachne Flickr for comparison to the pattern. [lace] Bedfordshire lace
Before I can start on my point ground samples, I needed to clear my pillow. After finishing pattern #3 in Intro to Bedfordshire Lace by Jean Leader, I wasn't as thrilled as I had hoped to be. I've posted a pic to Arachne Flickr & would appreciate some constructive comments. The pattern calls for Tanne 30--I don't own any--so I substituted Cordonnet Special 70. The lace is very textural with the cordonnet, not the smooth, crisp appearance that I was anticipating. Did I use the wrong thread? Will mangling help? Am I misinformed about how it should look when finished? I elected not to use tatting cotton because I wanted traditional white. Many thanks for any suggestions. Re: [lace] English point ground lace
Thank you Diane! Another member wrote privately recommending this book so I will add it to my reading list. I am most eager to see what the OIDFA study found. In France, the âterroirâ is such an important factor. Folks in villages 5km apart each think they produce the best wine, eau de vie, cheese, whatever & can tell you, chapter & verse, why theirâs is âle meilleurâ! Maybe these subtleties apply to vintage English lace as well? What a learning experience this is turning into. Thx again. [lace] Re: Beads ‘n’ Lace
Thank you Jane! You helped me gel the options that were whirling in my mind. Iâve just given it a try & come upon a snag. Bedfordshire is worked right side up & when I made the final cross-twist, the bead got twisted/buried. The only way I could get the bead to sit/stay on top was to cloth stitch the two right pairs & two left pairs. That meant the windmill didnât get closed & the bead didnât get centered. It kind of looks downward, as if the flower was drooping. SoâI tried the first cross, pin, sewed the bead, then twist & cross. It held ok & the result is threads that encase the bead on all sides. The size 11 seed bead appears centered but itâs not as cute as I anticipated. Itâs actually kind of clunky. I thought this might make a fun gift for one of my Crazy Quilt friends but now I think it would be better to just make the lace & let her sew on the beads when she embellishes the seam. Thanks again for your good advice. Sorry I couldnât make it work for this Beds project. [lace] Flickr account for photos
Thank you for bringing this to our attention Sue! And thank you Clay—I had no clue you were underwriting our Arachne Flickr to this extent. We have all benefited from your generosity! Before I offer suggestions, what time frame are we working with here? The most obvious thing is to stop the Flickr billing meter to avoid further charges to Clay. To that end, I will edit my album to remove at least 2/3 of my photos. I’m always excited to post pics as I pass personal milestones but I have abused our system by adding pics without removing any! Going forward, I will be sure to make my album more of an rotating exhibit rather than a compendium of past works. If we can collectively get under the threshold of 1000 photos, we will have a bit of breathing room to address our needs. While I am willing to contribute to an Arachne Flickr Fund, there are some obvious logistical issues involved in collecting funds from Arachne members scattered across the globe, each person using local currency! This whole enterprise would be greatly simplified if we can work within the Flickr guidelines for a free account. [lace] Fwd: Trace the grace of making lace
Happy New Year All! Iâm sending a link to a newspaper article on lace. Friends in Erie, PA told me about it & my friend Jean R. found it online. The reporter interviewed Jean & me in late fall & I moved to Florida December 1st thinking that the project was DOA. Imagine our surprise! Unbelievableâthis all started in 2017 (!!) when Pam Parker, the editor of Lake Erie Lifestyles did an article on our home for the real estate section. My pillow was on the desk in my studio & she was attracted to my beaded Mechlin bobbins on the pattern. Through my real estate agent, she contacted me about publishing an article about lace in April 2018, then dropped the project. In the meantime, I occasionally sent her updates on lace-related events including Lace, Not Lace at Hunterdon Museum. The newspaper even printed a nice photo of our lace group & a blurb about the exhibit. In October, she assigned reporter Liz Allen & we were on again! Jean R. & I had a blast helping Liz make her first lace fish. We showed her our lace & answered lots of questions. She followed up on resources we recommended & we are thrilled with her article. Itâs hard to know where, when or how you will make a lace impression on someone. We are lucky some jazzy bobbins started the conversation! BTWâthere is a link to a PBS segment featuring Allie Marguccio. Enjoy! Hello All! I am living proof that one can work a beginner Binche pattern & live to tell the tale! A friend in BC suggested pattern 1 in Binche Deel 1 by Bep V R de Vries. With her help & coaching by email, my bookmark is now finished & posted to Arachne Flickr. Thanks to all who have mastered the art of tensioning take ins & take outs without support pins. Your comments are duly noted but in the end, there were just too many challenges for me to manage at once & I succumbed to helper pins. The good news is, once it's off the pillow, no one knows what tricks were used! The unpinned method will be among my goals once I have a better understanding of this lace. The book is B-387 in the IOLI library & a few cute patterns are on my radar: a little peacock, a snail & some Christmas trees. The book will be returned next week in case anyone else wants to give Binche a try. I enlarged the pattern 145% & used Aurifil Mako 50/2 cotton thread. A needle pin is different than a lazy susan. The needle pin is essentially a needle with a handle. The eye of the needle is buried & the point is the business end. [lace] more Rosaline
Hello All! A new friend that I met in Les Carroz was very kind & sold me her extra copy of The Technique of Rosaline Lace by Chieko Miyawaki so I wanted to share some information about this book. It is written in Japanese but there is a CD included that has a 26 page English translation as a pdf. While I would say that the translator is not a lacemaker, the translation so far has proved to be adequate. There are lots of good diagrams & many elegant patterns. So far, I've only had time to work with the fish & rose instructions & note that there are some differences in technique compared to Judith Cordell, Geelen & Moors. I felt the instructions & diagrams for the "multiple fish" motif were helpful when I re-worked the Cordell leaf spray. My finished piece is now posted to Flickr & when compared to the leaf sprays on my "strawberry", I see some improvement. There are still some bare spots but the leaf doesn't look as moth eaten as my previous effort. Progress! I do wa! nt to mention that Miyawaki advocates dropping two pairs at the bottom of each fish, then sewing in the sixth pair after completing the shared pinholes between fish. She also uses pins between the petals of the rose motif. This makes the rose more pentagon shaped rather than 5 rounded petals. Be sure to read thru to the end of the translation--some of the patterns are intended to be enlarged. She uses 120/2 thread. Hope this is helpful if you are interested in owning the book. I believe my friend purchased the book from a supplier in Australia. Perhaps the AU Arachne team will confirm? Have fun. Much lighter & easier to use than OptiVisor, a device that makes me feel like I'm wearing a welder's helmut! Just my two cents. Satisfied customer. [lace] Rosaline Perle
Hello All! With counseling from Bev, I was finally able to finish a small Rosaline motif, Lesson 2 in the Geelen book. Lots of wonky areas but I learned a lot! Rather than a square tally, I made a small perle & suspended it in the center with Russian/Herringbone stitch using #28 tapestry & #11 sharps needles. It might be worth a try to make a larger perle to cover the entire opening because it would be easier to sew thru, catching the edge of the inner ring. Making the perle turned out to be quite an adventure because of the long length of thread needed. There must be an easier way, but I don't know it...yet! It's posted to Flickr, warts & all. My neighbor just got married so I plan to use it to decorate a small candle jar, a token gift. More IOLI library books have arrived so it's time to learn something new! Hope everyone is well & making more lace. Sincerely, Susan Hottle USA - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Remembrance Poppy project
Hello All! This turned out to be a really fun project for a worthy cause! Thanks again to Sue Babbs for posting the information & to Janice Blair for allowing her pattern to be used. I used DMC perle 5 for the weavers, a single strand of Watercolours "cardinal" for each passive & DMC memory wire/thread inside the edge passive pair. I set up on the right side with a Schneeberger-type start that brought me back to the left where I could start the weaving & follow Janice's thread path. Before working the first row, I put in the DMC memory thread using my notes from Mirecourt. Passives were added astride the 1st & 2nd passives inside the memory wire, using a temporary pin. Janice recommended removing additional threads before the end so I discarded 6 pairs, one pair on each alternating row starting at the 8th row before the end. Memory wires were twisted together on each petal to shape, then clipped off. After knotting off & trimming the passives, cut ends were colored with a b! lack Sharpie pen. Poppies actually have tufted centers so it was all good! Both Sue & Janice recommended increasing the pattern by 20% to work with perle 5 & Sue suggested sewing the petals to assemble. My petals are sewn to a three layer sandwich of craft felt, using red Nymo beading thread. A black glass Victorian shank style button was used for the center. Two strands of twisted #26 copper core wire run thru the shank, thru the felt, then thru another button on the back. There was a bit of fudging on my part & it is far from perfect, but I'm happy with the results! My photos are posted to Flickr in case anyone else wants to try this method. When I went to Flickr, I saw that Lin Hudren has posted her RPL poppies! They are wonderful & I'm so glad Arachne members are taking time to contribute. [lace] Tossing out pairs in half stitch
Thanks to all who wrote to me privately! I appreciate your feedback & suggestions. After making one Holly, I was overly confident that I knew what I was doing. Clearly I got ahead of myself! LOL In the meantime, I hope other beginners will "clip & save" this info for future reference. [lace] tossing pairs in half stitch
Hello All! After making a holly leaf from the Lace #168 magazine last year, I gave away the finished lace during the Arachne Christmas exchange. Last week I decided to make a different leaf for myself & I'm disappointed with the results. Eventually, I'd like to make all six leaves but I need to understand what I did wrong before starting a new one! I made the first leaf with DMC special dentelles 80, 30wcm/2S/3Z & I thought it turned out OK. Last week, I used Radix 50, 32wcm, 2Z. The instructions call for tossing out a pair of passives in the middle of the edging to decrease to 10 pairs. I selected the second pair from the outside edge on each side & ended up with unattractive holes in the edging. Is this a matter of improper tension, selecting the wrong pair of passives, using slightly finer thread, a combination of factors, or something else??? I posted a photo to Flickr & would appreciate some constructive criticism from the experts if you have time. It is most frustra! ting to toil away & find that I have gone awry! Many thanks if you can help. Sincerely, Susan Hottle USA - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Porcelain lace
Hello All! Today USPS delivered an interesting package from Bulgaria, via Pennsylvania. EGA friends sent me a handmade porcelain cup that is decorated with lace. What lacemaker doesn't need one? It's very interesting--think Repousse--relief on the outside & depressions on the inside. It is adorable so I posted a photo to Flickr. The maker has a website & posts items on Etsy. It was beautifully packaged & tied with waxed linen (?) string. A handwritten haiku on the inside of the box & a tiny origami crane completed the package. My stitching buddies sure know how to spoil me rotten. More lace--Salut! [lace] scissors for lace?
Happy New Year's Eve to All! Hope you enjoyed your holiday--Christmas, Hanukkah or another. If not, maybe you just enjoyed the time off & a few extra moments to yourself. For me, it has been a strange & wonderful season all rolled into one. We were a bit subdued until we got my husband's CT & PET scan reports this week--he is cancer-free for the second year. So let the party begin!! As many of you know, before I made lace, I spent a lot of time in embroidery world. There aren't many techniques that I haven't tried & I still follow many embroidery websites to stay in touch with my first love. When I'm not making lace, I'm working on embroidery! Two of my favorite sites are Mary Corbet's Needle 'N Thread & Tricia Nguyen's Thistle Threads. Both cover embroidery--soup to nuts! This year, Mary offered the Stitcher's Christmas 2017 contest & I entered one of her giveaways. Long story short, I was the LUCKY WINNER of a pair of hand made scissors from France from one of her sponsor! s, The French Needle. These tiny beauties are beyond exquisite & they cut like a dream. Did I mention that I am over the moon?! I posted a photo to Flickr & I am most eager to use them for Rosaline, Honiton & needle lace. Very pointy & exceedingly sharp, they will be handy in tight spaces where accuracy is key. Hardanger comes to mind, but it's not my thing. I've already tried them on a small, beaded needlepoint project & I am in love! Which brings me to the question of the day. What kind of scissors are being used for lace? I confess to owning many scissors, some quite nice--but I have never had scissors like this. Nor would I have suspected that there would be such a dramatic difference in quality! Yikes, did I miss the scissor tutorial? What are the experts using & why? Looking forward to candid opinions & advice because I am still in shock. Re: [lace] Dutch Rosaline translation — relief?
Perfect--thanks Jo! Fishlet is a great description for this Rosaline motif. It is tiny & made in two parts. Rib is made first then the rest of the fishlet. Interesting concept. [lace] Merry Christmas on Flickr!
I took a brief rest from my Rosaline adventures to make a pair of earrings from the Lace Guild UK free online pattern, designed by Jean Leader. They were fun to make & I posted a photo to Flickr. The thread is Stef Francis fine & the beads are 15*. I hope my friend who does not have pierced ears will enjoy them! Then I realized that I had neglected to post my little wreath. After taking a Frisado class from Carolyn Wetzel at Ithaca, I played around with the #4 gold passing thread & Gutermann silks when I got home. The little wreath was a big hit with a friend in Ohio. The bow is brick stitch & made with Delicas. Frisado is a Spanish needlelace that features loops of gold passing thread in various sizes, spacing & density. It is light as a feather & lends itself to jewelry & ornaments. The wreath has a 28 gauge wire rim to give it stability. [lace] Using chenille as a passive & a Hamilton lace sample
Hello All! E Day (Exhibit Day) is almost here & two more samples are in the bag! With all the chat about chenille in Blonde lace, I decided to add some as a passive in my sample of logarithmic lace. It's next to an Oliver Twist glitter thread. Also decided to take a page out of Lauran Sundin's book & finish my threads with beads. It wasn't as easy as using wire but it does give a different appearance. Worth trying again. To tie off/finish the chenille, I hand picked the chenille fluff out of the base threads & gently tied them. Worked great. Jean Leader very graciously drafted the famous Hamilton collar lace & diagrammed the gimp paths so it could be included in our Scottish lace section. I haven't done gimps in years & it shows! Using a Q-Tip dipped in water & a pin, I nudged the gimp & it is slightly improved since I took my photo. Both are on Flickr Photostream. The Hamilton lace somehow missed my album so I hope it's not floating in yours. Apologies if so! ! My third piece of lace wasn't quite so lucky. I've restarted that pattern but it's not looking good to finish by Thursday. Can only hope that students & faculty find something to love in our Edinboro, PA display. We will be front & center in the library during the Highland Games & Festival Sept. 7-10. Hope they have a good turnout! Devon very kindly sent a link to her home away from home--The Met! http://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search#!?PerPage=20&offset=0&q=Lace&geolocation=Ripon&material=Bobbin%20lace The photos are also posted in my album on Arachne Flickr. There are some interesting features such as Copenhagen holes & something that reminds me of an upside down fir tree. The experts will know what these things are. I'm just amazed that the lozenges are treated sort of like a ground, with the other features emphasized. Four-penny spot indeed! Perhaps if Agnes has a spare moment, she can tell us if her book has these patterns? The book is not available thru IOLI library. [lace] New Pitsligo lace, Lady's Fan
Hello All! Another sample of Scottish lace is finished for our LOL lace exhibit next month. This pattern was sent to me by Lorri Ferguson. Thanks again Lorri! Sheila Joss in NP told me that this is a companion pattern to Queen's Fan that was made for Queen Victoria. Lady's Fan was for her lady-in-waiting. Way cool. Lorri kindly suggested Mako #28 cotton thread but I don't own it so I used Idrija #30, a similar thread per Brenda's book. If anyone has a suggestion regarding swapping out threads, I would appreciate it. When I ran out, I tried to hide the newly joined thread in the half stitch ground triangles. Now that it's off the pillow, I can see that it muddied the crispness of the ground so would like to find a better hiding place. I was reluctant to swap threads in the cloth stitch fans because of the vertical center rib. Several NP patterns that I've worked have vertical lines of pins in the center of a motif & there must be a learning curve on those, in orde! r to get it to lay flat. Other than that, I'm pleased with my first effort. It's a sweet edging & I can see it on a hankie or personal garment. [lace] Ripon, Scotland
Hello All! Now that Polish lace is out of the way & our display is on exhibit, it's time to work on Scotland for next month's installation. I just finished an adorable little Ripon lace edging that Jean Leader interpreted from an old encyclopedia. It was published in Lace & I found it at Cornell University library last year. I will post a pic of the lace to Arachne Flickr. If anyone would like the pattern, I will scan it & send as I can't find the issue/page info at the moment. I didn't have 80/2 gassed cotton so used DMC broder machine 50. The design is very sweet & would look great as an edging on cotton lawn--light & airy for summer. [lace] Bobowa lace, Poland
Thanks to Jean Leader, I was able to finish my piece of Bobowa lace over the weekend. She kindly sent me a photo of the lace last fall & I promptly tried & failed. Working over a photo was new to me! A week ago, I started again & easily finished the trails & plait pairs but got stumped on the fillings. Turns out, I should have worked them while working the body of the lace, but only she knew that! The pattern turned out to be quite sneaky. The lace is now in the Lacers of the Lake exhibit in Lawrence Park on the east side of Erie, PA. Pictures of the Bobowa lace & our exhibit are posted to Arachne Flickr. Lots of patrons stopped by while it was being installed & the librarian asked for a program. We're planting lace seeds & hope a few will grow. Thanks again Jean!! [lace] a lace accident & Borax
Hello All! If you heard screams earlier today, it was me. While removing my just completed convention jewelry from the bolster pillow, I realized that the pricking that seemed to have been covered with plastic film was not. Dark, ugly smudges covered my pale yellow Idrija cotton lace--EEK! Dawn dish soap cuts thru lots of stuff but it didn't help today so I grabbed the Borax. Yes, the 20 Mule Team stuff promoted by the Old Ranger back in the day. Thirty minute soak with intermittent agitation. Not perfect but much improved so I don't think it will be necessary to dye the lace. But OMG it was a race to get it re-pinned to the pattern. Cotton shrinks--rapidly. Note to self, always cover every pricking with plastic film--better to have two layers than none. Anyway, I wanted to share this in case it saves someone else's project from the dustbin or helps clean dull vintage linens that were meant to be laundered. Not something I would try with fine lace, but a more rob! ust lace like Idrija seems to be OK. I'm sure Jeri will scold, but Borax is a naturally occurring product that is anti-fungal etc. Since I didn't have time to remake the lace for our upcoming exhibit & it is unlikely to be featured anytime soon at the V & A, I took my chances with the Borax. I would say that overall, the lace is slightly lighter than the original thread but acceptable. The piece is posted on Flickr--it was fun to make. Onward to the next project! [lace] IOLI convention
What an invigorating, whirlwind week! The classes were great & everyone was pleased with their choices. Lovely earrings, strand of pearls & serenading Mummers were just a few of our perks. IOLI generously donated packets of back issues of the Bulletin so I was able to return home with additional useful resources for my chapter. Win-win & a big thank you to IOLI! Arlene did a great job organizing our Arachne luncheon & it was very well attended. Jean Leader modeled her famous black lace tie so we all got to admire it. The lace display room was astounding--so many competition pieces plus others on exhibit. Betty MacDonald had a section all to herself--multiple pieces including Starry Night & one that had rain pelting a barefoot duck wearing a mac. Whimsical & very effective. Teachers' Showcase was overwhelming--metallic lace bowls, tree ring inspired lace, avant garde Slovakian lace, Karen Thompson's Ipswich samples, Jane Atkinson's thistle scarf with tufts & the li! st went on. Devon posted a large number of photos to IOLI FaceBook so you can get an idea. Devon's lace exhibit proposal has been accepted by a museum in NJ & we got to see her presentation. Funding is needed so if you can help or have ideas, I'm sure they would be welcome. The vendors were over the top. OMG--who doesn't love petting new threads, yarn, bobbins & books? [lace] Bedfordshire lace
Thank you Nancy, Jane & Lorelei for setting me straight! And for keeping me from making a major error at the library. Unless there is some scholarly objection, I think "early plaited lace" could work when referring to English lace made in the 1500's. The object here is to make a brief statement that illustrates the long history of lace in Britain. Opus Anglicanum was a specialty there a bit earlier & it seems like a natural progression for lace to have developed a similar relationship with the church in Britain, Bedfordshire area or not, in that period. I see that the IOLI library has the Levey book so I will try before I buy! Thanks again for your expert input. [lace] Alex Stillwell's fish
Just to add my 2 cents worth--this is a great mini-pattern! Our guild successfully used it to teach bobbin lace to Girl Scouts. As suggested on the IOLI cd last year, we left the tails long, added beads & glued them to hair clips. Each Girl Scout left with a finished piece that she could wear. One of the Scouts modeled her hair clips & the photo is posted to Lacers of the Lake - LOL on FaceBook. This is a terrific resource to share lace with the public. Thanks Alex! [lace] Bobbin holder
Hello All! If this is a re-run, please accept my apologies! I don't recall seeing any previous discussion about using a bobbin holder to transport pre-wound bobbins so I will share. There is a photo posted to Flickr. I have several types of bobbin holders & the one in question is a "tuning fork" style--a rigid piece of wood with two prongs. While getting ready for Louise Colgan's class, I was winding bobbins & wondering how to transport them to prevent tangled threads. My only bobbin case is jammed with Midlands style & I'm using Dutch ones for this class. It's too much aggravation to take all that apart & reload the case. What to do? I ended up putting the bobbins in the bobbin holder & closing the end with a large safety pin--voila! There are 10 pairs in the holder & I think there is space for maybe 2 more. Since I need more bobbin holders anyway, I will look for more of this type because it has more than one use! I just slipped the whole thing into a plastic b! ag. Neat & clean. [lace] more Rauma lace & Lin's Easter motifs
Hello All! Just in the nick of time, I finished another piece of Rauma-style lace for our LOL exhibit in Conneaut, OH in July. This weekend is Louise Colgan's Milanese workshop near Buffalo so I needed to clear my pillow & bobbins to get ready. There are definitely some issues, especially where the twisted pair passes thru the tally flowers. This technique is new to me & needs revision, practice or both! Is this a good time to ask how others make half stitch diamonds? Personally, I am not fond of them especially when they are ill-defined--I prefer a crisp edge. Is half stitch diamond construction a matter of lacemaker's choice or do certain types of lace require diamonds with less definition on the edges? I posted a photo to Flicker & constructive criticism is welcome! Lin posted some Easter motifs to Flickr--Romanian point lace? They are cute & I'm sure they looked great on her egg tree for the holiday. Tomorrow our LOL lace exhibit moves from Linesville, PA (pop! ulation 1008) to Meadville, PA (13,388). [lace] Rauma lace & climbing Halti
Hello All! With much help from Arachne, I finally finished my first piece of Rauma lace--Kustaa Adolflai. It is posted to Flickr. Here's what I learned--there are many types of crossings & not all of them are in Practical Skills. Alex Stillwell came to my rescue so that issue was beautifully resolved. Next was running out of thread. Out of twenty-five pairs, I had to replace 4 pairs--ugh. Note to self--no matter how much thread you estimate, it always takes more! Thank you for your suggestions as to where to hide my new thread. I ended up using the plaits & I am very pleased with the results. While I wouldn't say I've conquered leaves, these are much better than my last effort & I'm looking forward to further improvement. The working direction of this lace was a big challenge for me & now that I see it off the pillow, the tension is incorrect in a number of areas. So--much remains to be learned! If anyone else is interested in learning Rauma lace, there are two ! nice sites that are worth a visit. www.raumalace.fi & nyplaajat.net. Raumalace has a short video that illustrates the three-pair edge & nyplaajat has a variety of pdfs of finished lace. [lace] Pella thread & Kortelahti lace
Hello All! My adventures with Finnish lace started with Uudet Nyplaysmallit from the IOLI library & I posted my samples to Flickr. It is very difficult for me to start a new lace without cues so these prickings are just what I needed. Hopefully, I will be able to transfer these "starting principles" to other Finnish patterns that Arachneans have contributed to my Finland project. The Pella thread turned out to be quite interesting. I am very pleased that it is so uniform & smooth compared to other linen threads I have used. Is this a characteristic of the twist, the fiber, the plies or some combination thereof? Whatever their process, I found it easier to tension & the ivory color is quite pretty once you realize it is not white-white. The only downside is a "springlike" characteristic & I've had a few backlash/tangling incidents that I would like to express in Finnish! When I wound the bobbins, I cut individual lengths rather than wind from the spool. Would windi! ng from the spool help maintain thread control? Suggestions are welcome. [lace] dog motif?
Hello All! I just finished wandering thru this article that was referenced in an earlier post by Malvary: 'A Further Legacy Three Personal Lace Notebooks of Marian Powys' https://www2.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/articles/nb85_lc2.pdf & found a charming piece of "dog" lace! If memory serves, someone was looking for a dog pattern & this one is classic. It's on page 40 if anyone needs a dog pattern for future use. Re: [lace] Arachne Flickr--new pictures posted
Thanks Clay & Sue Babbs! For some reason, I was using an outdated password. It's all good now! I uploaded some new pictures so you would see I'm not loafing away the winter on the beach. Plenty of mistakes but I am pleased with my first attempt at Ballantrae/Borris lace. My picots especially need grooming so I hope practice is the key. Getting the tape to lie flat was a learning curve although I think I got better as I went along. Unfortunately, the DMC30 thread does not match the Branscombe tape. It's lovely to work with but has an ivory cast compared to the bright white tape. The Bellon leaf is my second effort with the pattern. The floss is dreamy--midnight blue, purple & sort of a bronze brown--"Seasons", made in Japan. I mixed it with copper colored blending filament to make the plaited veins & used Valdani variegated perle as gimp. Last but not least, I made another piece of Zakopane Polish lace. The ruffled one is my first attempt, where I used linen thre! ad & it was too big for the pattern. Too late smart! The second one was made with Idrija cotton thread. The result is neater but cotton is not the "traditionally correct" thread. At some point, I will make another using finer linen. Today, USPS delivered some Pella linen thread so Rauma/Finnish lace will be on my pillow as soon as I finish an in-progress egg. What is everyone else working on? Sue I am eager to see what you do with the lily pattern!! [lace] Zakopane Polish lace & Janet Theaker's Christmas wreath mat
Hello All! Many thanks to whomever posted the Polish lace patterns to laceioli on ning! https://koronkaklockowa.wordpress.com The tightly undulating tape is reminiscent of vermicelli work in embroidery & the crag pattern in Borris/Ballantrae so now I wonder who influenced whom. After I figured out the pattern sizing, Lorelei kindly told me it was OK to start tape lace with bobbins grouped on pins. Who knew! My only experience starting tape lace was a line of pins with one pair on each, or a giant pin laid on its side with all the pairs looped over. Thank you Lorelei--you got me off dead center. My first little effort is now finished & posted to Flickr. Lots of errors as usual--the big glaring one being that I didn't make the correct stitch on the edges! Egad--should be cloth & twist. And oh my, how does one learn to make tape lace without pinholes?!? I would love to say that I was able to conquer the Nike method--Just Do It--but alas I found myself marking the pa! ttern ahead of time to help myself with pin placement. Developing that on-the-fly placement skill seems a mystery. Before I attempt this again, I would appreciate some constructive criticism on how to improve. My thread was 40/2 linen & it seems a bit bunchy so I was wondering if I should substitute 50/2 or 60/2? Any thoughts from the experts? In the meantime, on my way to uploading my Zakopane pic, I saw Janet's wreath/mat. OMG--it is very special--thanks for sharing Janet! Merry Christmas & Happy Hanukkah! [lace] Magic Sizing
Hello All! Even though I used linen thread, I wanted to give my exchange ornament some additional body. I simply overlaid the lace with a plastic bag with a hole cut in the center & spritzed it with "Magic Sizing". According to the can--"light body without stiffness" & I would agree. My pricking was covered with sticky film so the sizing didn't bleed thru to my pillow. With the ceiling fan on, it air-dried in about 20 minutes. I would use this product again as it doesn't have that starchy appearance. Hope this alternative helps. Hello All! My exchange partner, Vickie Green, sent an adorable tatted & beaded Christmas tree. It's a very clever design that uses twisted bugles as well as small round metal beads (maybe 2mm?). Hello All! With profound thanks to Janet Theaker, I was able to make a star with linen & metallic threads. She made some suggestions & set me straight so "A Star Is Born"! It's posted to Flickr, very pretty in spite of some technical issues, & I'm so sorry I don't know the issue of Lace Express. Good thing I kept my "Jean Leader notes" on making picots! When I didn't have the metallic 12, I searched my stash & found the Finca. It is put up in skeins & I bought mine at a friend's embroidery shop. Just wanted to report that it was very nice to work with & I give it high marks for being forgiving thru all my retro-lacing! It wasn't made twice, but for awhile it seemed like I was going back more than I was going forward. With the ornament exchange deadline looming, I am encouraged to try similar patterns & add some bling to the star/snowflake shapes. Thanks again Janet! [lace] Linen thread
Thank you Alice! When you mentioned Fresia linen thread, the lightbulb finally went on. When I was buying my thread in an assortment of sizes, my choices were between Fresia & the other one. The one I bought has a more matte finish & the explanation was that Fresia is mercerized. So I just read this very cool article about hemp, flax & processing fibers at: https://oecotextiles.wordpress.com/category/fibers/linen-fibers/ & discovered that mercerizing rounds & straightens the fibers while adding luster. Although I knew a bit about retting, I had no clue what mercerizing added to the process & I would never have made this connection if you had not mentioned the Fresia! Thank you Alice & others for all your help & suggestions. I will be a better informed thread shopper going forward! [lace] Linen thread
Hello All! May I ask what brand linen thread you are using & why? I'm a bit steamed to find big hunks of lint stuck in 90/2 linen thread & unsure of whether to pick it out & risk breaking the thread or cutting it out & adding a new bobbin. While I realize that linen was nicer in the "good old days", I'm concerned that there seems to be so little quality control for thread that is now $xx a spool! [lace] Ithaca weekend
Hello All! What a great time! I enjoyed Allie's Idrija class & finished my tri-color sea star. I made plenty of mistakes but I'm still very pleased with the results. There were more than a few challenges working open method on a bolster & controlling the color thru all the sewings! This narrow tape style was influenced by the Italians so there are a few similarities with Cantu. Overall, FLLG does a great job--especially selecting interesting classes. When you have difficulty winnowing down the list to a first, second & third choice, you know you're in trouble! This year, I took some time on Friday afternoon to visit the Cornell University Mann library where the lace books reside. They have a nice collection of lace publications & it's worth making time to visit. Their online catalog makes it easy to create your "must see" list ahead of time. I was able to research some back issues of Lace magazine (Lace Guild UK) & browse in the stacks. Other lace books in their ! special collection require advance notice & their online staff provides generous help. For those of us who missed IOLI this year, Ithaca was also an opportunity to reconnect with long-time lace friends, make new ones & put faces with names from Arachne. Looking forward to Ithaca 2017! [lace] Polish lace
Hello All! Today I am searching for some information on Polish bobbin lace. Our IOLI charter chapter installs lace exhibits in libraries & we are fully booked thru Dec. 2017! Two of the libraries are in areas that serve a high percentage of people of Polish ancestry. We try to tailor our displays to the patrons served & one of the librarians asked us to show where our lace samples originated. I know that Polish lace exists because I followed the links to the YouTube videos that were posted on Ning. A G**gle search for "koronka" brought up finished lace for sale but no other info. At this point, I have several parallel searches for lace from various countries as we attempt to provide interesting & relevant exhibits for our host libraries. So far, I've checked the usual suspects worldcat, antique pattern library, digital archives, Univ.. of Chicago etc. for Polish, Slavic or Eastern European lace. Unfortunately, I have not yet found a book or pattern to make a sample. ! We have several Catholic parishes in Erie, with predominantly Polish members so I have reached out to them because they often sponsor Polish heritage events. I will let you know whether this turns up anything beyond the YouTube vid I've already seen. In the meantime, if anyone can point me in a direction, I would be most grateful. Although this subject appears in Arachne archives, there isn't much detail so I'm temporarily stumped. Suggestions? [lace] Chinese laces
Hello All! To follow up for Jeri, these references are in the old issues of The Bulletin posted on Digital Archives. Issue 1967-1968 pg7 a reference to Chinese bobbins in an archived letter from Teresa Pellegrini dated June 10, 1938. Page 12, archived letter from Pellegrini dated July 14, 1938 "The real Chinese & Japanese laces are very expensive". This was a reply to a question about inexpensive laces in shops. Issue 1971-1972 #1 pg9 This Chinese pattern 63A was contributed by Mrs. Sweetland of Laurel, FL. Issue 1971-1972 #2 pg 26 Chinese pattern #44 contributed by Mrs. Sweetland. Issue 1972-1973 #3 pg 61 Chinese pattern 537 contributed by Mrs. Sweetland. Same issue pg 77 Chinese pattern #28. All of the patterns appear to be Torchon with no discernible Oriental influence. So, how are they related to the Chinese & what are Chinese bobbins? There are more citations in random following issues of The Bulletin. I was curious as to how the Chinese & lace were related. ! BTW--this is not Chinese, but there is a lovely peacock in Issue 1971-1972 #3 pg 71 if anyone is interested. [lace] Charlie Brown Christmas tree
Hello All! It was an interesting week--with cataract surgery & a near heart attack over Digital Archives, you might think I would be resting & eating bonbons. No--I've been making one-eyed lace! I had promised myself (& Allie M) that I would practice my limited Idrija skills except life intervened last winter. So I seized the day, dug out my bolster & tried a little tree pattern that Allie suggested. It is now finished & posted to Flickr in spite of its many flaws. By the time I realized that I had made an error on the first loop, I was on the next row of tape so decided to improvise rather than unlace. That just compounded the mistake so by the time I came to the last loop, the multiplicity of errors skewed the lace. It is also very difficult to make sewings with impaired depth perception! Long story short, by the time I was done, I was laughing & thinking of Charlie Brown. Good grief! Thank you Sue for posting the link--it is not one that I have ever used! The link that I normally use goes to ALL the documents, hence it includes embroidery & other forms of needlework. It's a mammoth undertaking to search for items using the entire list. Sue's link filters the list to "lace" entries only so I took the tour. Hello All! A new pic has been uploaded to Flickr--I wanted to post it before cataract surgery tomorrow! Since I wasn't certain how to make the plaited veins & didn't have time to research/ask questions before my self-imposed deadline, I improvised with some beads. Hello All! I've posted a pic of my finished egg on Flickr. Not perfect but I am thrilled & so glad it didn't come apart when I took out the pins. Also figured out why I was attracted to the design--it reminds me of patterns in Sashiko & Temari. Those radiating lines create a swirling effect. Since my egg doesn't look quite like the sample pictured in the book, I've undoubtedly used the wrong combination of stitches. If anyone knows Annelies Kirst, it would be great to understand what she had in mind or whether she was encouraging "lace maker's choice"! On to the next project... [lace] Beadalon beading needles for sewings
Hello All! Just wanted to clarify which needle I used, so I posted a photo to Flickr. One pack is fine, the other heavy--I used the fine. I believe the needle that Cindy referred to is another type. The Big Eye needle that I'm familiar with is more like two wires stuck together at each end. The entire needle is split down the center longitudinally & you can put yarn, ribbon, thick thread etc. thru because the opening is very large. They are also several inches long--maybe 4" or so. I have used both types, but used the ones I posted to Flickr for my egg trail. Cindy is quite right, a good bead shop will stock both kinds so you can pick the one(s) that work for your project. As I type this, now I wonder if this would be a terrific way to load beads on lace thread?? H. If someone tries this, please let us know the results! Well, I've changed my mind. The only way I could make it work was to use kiss stitch (CTCTC) with CS.CS (linen stitch) in each corner. I made half the stitch, put up the pin, made the kiss stitch, then returned to close the pin with the second half. It's probably not what the designer had in mind & I'm not convinced it is the correct method, but it's moving forward. I've posted a WIP pic to Flickr but it's quite dark. Light bouncing off the pinheads really makes a mess. Thanks again to all who contributed ideas. I think I earned a few more grey hairs today! Hello All! First let me thank Lyn Bailey who sorted out the Sterngrund diagram for this pattern. It looked like a plate of spaghetti to me & if she hadn't helped, I wouldn't have gotten this far! Thank you Lyn!! As I was concerned about copyright, I drew the sterngrund & I've posted my pic to Flickr. It is so pretty, I think you will be inspired to try it yourself. It is NOT DRAWN TO SCALE! The star that is formed in the middle is held within an 8-sided polygon with unequal sides. North, south, east & west are one length & NE, NW, SE & SW are a different length. In between the polygons, there is a small square. When I enlarged the egg to fill an 8.5x11" sheet of paper, I was able to draw in the paths (not on Flickr because of copyright). On the square, after the NE & NW stitches are made, the two pairs meet then drop to form the east & west sides of the square. The square actually rounds out a bit & each corner ends up looking like part of roseground (to me!). Of c! ourse, all of this is within the egg shape so there are compensation issues with partial polygon motifs. As to kiss stitch, that is CTCTC to me, although it seems a bit tight for the space on the square. After some trial & error, it is definitely NOT CTCTC. Somehow the corner pins are made, then the two pairs are joined on the top (or bottom) of the square, then the corner pins are closed. I just tried HS . HS & that didn't work for me. Now you know why I was hoping for a more lace-related explanation of the translation. Thanks for all the suggestions. Please let me know if my feeble schematic suggests any other solutions. [lace] Glue & Lace
Hello All! I hope Jeri will skip this post because using glue & lace in the same sentence seems heretical! In my defense, I do believe that our textile-art ancestors used various types of adhesives, so that's my excuse & I'm sticking to it. While working on some little ornaments for embroidery friends, I was faced with making another 19 repeat strip of a Christine Springett French fan edging, or cutting off the needed amount from a previously worked strip. But what to do to stabilize the cut edge? I elected to carefully apply a small amount of Weldbond white glue (made in Canada), then let it dry & cut thru the middle of the dried glue section. Whenever I've purchased jacquard ribbon, the clerk always puts a piece of tape on the ribbon, then cuts thru the middle so this seemed like a similar situation. It worked great & I've uploaded pictures of my ornaments to Flickr. Each little dress is lightly stuffed with balsam fir & the tiny wooden hangers are from the miniatu! re section at Michaels. In the meantime, a Milanese moon that I made in Louise Colgan's class had some tied off thread ends that stuck out from the side. Weldbond to my rescue again! This stuff is thick, dries quickly & is easy to apply with a long pin. So far, it's nearly dry & there are no nasty glue stains on the right side of the lace. Is there another way to fix lace anomalies of this type without resorting to glue? If so, I'd like to learn about them. Many thanks for any suggestions. [lace] Schneeberger edging
Hello All! Today I wanted to share some tidbits about my adventures making Schneeberger lace, once again proving how little I know & how grateful I am for the help I receive! My lace group is working to complete a group project (a lace seascape) & my contribution was to Sashiko quilt the batik background & to make several versions of Lia's wave-like edging. It is week #45 & posted on Gon's site, I think perhaps 2015 or 2014. I started working on this over the winter & quickly found I had forgotten how to start the strip. My notes from a previous Schneeberger workshop with Susanne Sardella were in another state so I contacted her. Susanne very kindly sent her notes via email & suggested that I purchase or borrow a copy of Lia's book. Unfortunately, it is OOP but I was able to find a copy in the IOLI library. Fast forward, between Susanne's notes & Lia's book, I have made a variety of wave strips at this point. Mercifully, the last one looks better (to my eye) than th! e previous ones! Along the way, the Schneeberg join, where the worker pair exchanges with the left plait pair, was difficult for me to control. It looked wonky to me until I changed the way I made that stitch. My solution was to work the workers to the next pinhole, plait the pairs to the same pinhole, place the pin & simply loop the workers around the pin to meet the plait pair before making the stitch, finally tensioning. Why this works for me, I can't answer but there was definitely an improvement in my ability to tension the join by placing the pin before making that stitch. For me, this a "lacemaker's choice" technique because I'm sure it's not something the experts would advocate. I wanted to share, in case it helps someone else struggling to create a nice edge on the plait side. I posted a photo to Flickr showing my progress from the not-so-good red sample to my last effort on the top. It certainly proves the value of working a pattern more than one or two ti! mes! [lace] threads for "Gold & Silver Edgings"
Hello All! Gil Dye's metallic edgings are calling my name & I thought I would start out by working a few strips in plain cotton or linen before jumping off on the metallic threads. To orient myself, I started with the thread comparisons on pg 8 & ran into a snag when I couldn't find some of the threads in Brenda's book. Just guessing here--it seems like the Benton & Johnson passing & tambour plus the Jap thread would not normally be found in her thread index because they are goldwork threads rather than lace. I am not familiar with Stephen Simpson or Atelier MB Medalfaden 40/2 so have no clue. Is Coats Ophir the same as MEZ? There are two entries for DMC Fil Metallise: 4S 29 & bound 27, but maybe they are close enough sizewise that it doesn't matter. Plus I wasn't sure about the correct Presencia thread--in fact I didn't know they make metallics! If anyone has worked these edgings, would you be willing to share what you know about the threads? Are there some logica! l thread substitutes for ones that haven't been tested by Brenda? Has anyone used Rajmahal threads? I own some stranded Rajmahal metallic that is similar to DMC Mouline, maybe slightly finer. Any help will be most appreciated. Many thanks. [lace] French (?) lace sample posted on Flickr
Hello All! A friend of mine is helping the historical society in Grove City, Pennsylvania sort out one of their accessions. In a box marked "Tatting", she found a pile of lace with attached bobbins! The insertion pricking appears to be French & all items were donated by someone named Larson, said to be from New York, in 1986. The bobbins are a light color--perhaps boxwood?? She has painstakingly sorted the pile & put the work on a roller pillow so that it may be displayed. She was hoping to find out more about the donor so I said I would try to help & ask the experts! When I checked the Needle & Bobbin club periodicals on Arizona Archives, I found a Miss Helen Larsen, California who was a member of the NY club in 1917. I have directed my friend to the Archives as it will be quite an undertaking to read thru all the periodicals in search of the surname Larson or Larsen. Does anyone know of a lace maker named Larson/Larsen with ties to NY and/or Pennsylvania? There a! re plenty of interesting looking articles in the Needle & Bobbin Club files! Definitely something to take a closer look at in the future as this group was very active with museum tours, helping to underwrite a catalog for an exhibit, field trips to PA etc. for lace, embroidery & textiles. As a side note, the link for the Golden Anniversary issue of the Club is broken so I couldn't spot check that issue for a membership list. Many thanks for any help. [lace] pillow carrier
Hello All! Last fall, I bought a new 22" foam cookie pillow at Ithaca & this week I found that I didn't have a bag in Florida that was big enough to carry it. Even the beach bag I bought at Publix was not large enough. What to do! Then I remembered that I had saved the plastic bags from new bed pillows that I bought. These bags are heavy plastic, have a gusset, fabric bound seams & handles--thank you Martha Stewart! After zipping up the end, I made a slit in the top gusset & voila! Hope this helps others who might need a large, weather-resistant bag for lace supplies. [lace] In praise of good directions!
Hello All! My attempts at miniature lace are proceeding apace & I think this is a good time to mention that the learning curve has been eased by the supremely approachable instructions in the Snowden books! I would encourage other beginners to give miniature lace a try because her directions are super. Three more pieces are now posted to Flickr, warts & all. The yellow edging is Madeira Tanne 50 & the scrunched up mauve octagon is Madeira Cotona 80. I chose to work the octagonal bonnet back because I want to make a six sided star & have no clue how to start. The octagon looked like a good place to understand the technique of working a "slice", then turning the pillow. We shall see if that idea translates to the star! Unfortunately, I failed to install lazy loops on the octagon & the sewings/finishing went badly--hence the gathered section. For my own Crazy Quilt purposes, that section will be disguised with beads or buttons so it's not a total loss. With hand-dyed 2! mm silk ribbon interwoven, the aqua insertion (YLI Heirloom 70/2) looks OK on the side without errant loops so will be fine when appliqued to a block. So three more pieces of "personal lace" for my CQ adventures--YAY!! [lace] Assuit
Thank you Jeri! Glad to hear that you own one of these shawls. I will be looking more closely when checking out vintage textiles. Last night's AR appraisal was $900 but that may be based on the particular bands of motifs. I was also delighted to learn (Wikpedia) that Hedy Lamarr wore a dress made of the finished fabric. Draping to the Nth degree--Zowie! [lace] Edgings on Flickr
Hello All! My recent efforts with edgings are now posted to Flickr. I am Well Aware there are plenty of errors! That said, I had fun making them, particularly the Tregidgo piece on the right because I love the variegated Oliver Twist ground, the fuschia fans & the "wave" that travels thru. This is the pricking I reduced to make the white one in the middle using Brenda's formula for my Egyptian 100/2. The white one on the left is the poor survivor of my small roller pillow. The library ladies have been working overtime on my behalf & have acquired both Snowden & both Collier miniature/doll lace books. With Duchesse & sequin pins now in hand, I'm good to go. Thanks again to all who offered advice & counsel! [lace] Holiday ornament exchange
Oh My--just when I needed it the most--a fabulous green lace wreath with red beads from Dawn P. in a very special card. The wreath is a combination of green threads, matte & metallic, in a very clever fan design with zigzagging red seed beads. The card has an arched insert that is stamped & hand colored. It is lovely--Thank you! Even my husband remarked that I must display it in its entirety so it's now resting in the breakfront behind glass. I hope she received mine even though it is not nearly as nice. Egad, I need more classes! Happy Holidays to All! [lace] Oneida lace summer 2008
Hello All! Many thanks to all who have written with help & suggestions. I posted a pic of the page in question on Arachne Flickr & Sue B has kindly made it into a JPEG. If anyone has a copy of the IOLI charter chapter cd from 2008 & would be willing to look for it, we would be most grateful. I'm running behind on my holiday ornament for the exchange but hope to get it sewn out over the weekend. [lace] vintage lace posted to Flickr
Hello All! While I was adding to my stash of vintage buttons today, the shop owner brought over a packet of lace to see if I was interested. I was! It is a tiny insertion--5/16"--comprised of spiders. She thinks it is from Germany because it was in with a group of items she purchased from a German source. It is wrapped in pale blue tissue & there is a label on the back "25,00" but no manufacturer. I have not opened it yet but there seems to be several meters. I'd like to say that it is bobbin lace because of what I perceive to be pin holes. Pictures are posted & expert commentary is welcome! Many thanks for any suggestions as to what it might be. [lace] Buratto drawn-thread & tatting
Hello All! Thank you Sue D. for sharing some tatting resources for bangle ornaments. I'm certain my tatting friends will be thrilled! The Italian-needlework.blogspot.com site has posted a new book review on Buratto combined with Catherine de Medici embroidery & another technique. Enjoy!
