Greetings, Lacemakers! I have just visited the Arachne Flicker account which I set up earlier this week with Avital's able assistance. So far, only one person has asked me for the directions for moving photos from Webshots(Smile) to Flickr. Sue Babbs reported that the instructions worked fine for her, and her pictures are a treat to see!! In case you're feeling that the process is daunting and not worth the effort, I promise you that your pictures on Webshots definitely *are* worth the effort, and it isn't as hard as you might think. In fact, it's really not difficult at all. The major effort you will make is to add identifying information to your pictures, since this got lost when Smile took the photos from Webshots. So... Please have a look at our Flickr page. www.flickr.com The sign-in name is arachne2003 and the password is _H_oniton. Please note that Honiton has an upper-case H! __ And please, reply to this email and ask me to send you the directions! (I can't attach them to anything going to the list, as Majordomo doesn't support attachments.) Finally, if all else fails, Avital and I stand ready to help. But seriously, the process isn't as bad as you might think. Avital even said that my instructions weren't bad, considering I'm not a technical writer!! I take that as high praise, and she didn't ask for any corrections, so I guess that's good!! Don't wait too long to do this. I know everybody is busy, but eventually, we'll lose all the pictures that are on Webshots that haven't been moved, and this would be a shame. I got onto Smile OK. It seems to be saying that the first 30 days are free on the one hand, and that up to the changeover is free on the other. They also say they are not putting any more new photos onto Webshots. Re: [lace] Webshots Smile
Hi everyone, Have just had a look at the Smile site. It is easy enough to get into it, but the pictures, shown on a grid of over 1100, are all mixed together and not all that useful without their captions, names and tags. If you click on one of the pictures it loads quickly, but so are the unrelated pictures next to it. It takes much longer to move back to the grid of all the pictures. Have these photographs been left all mixed up because they were transferred en masse (i.e. as if it was one big file)? Could it be that it has sorted the lot by date only (as there are no tags I cannot see the date each picture was uploaded.? Will we be able to create 'albums' with new uploads? What about uploading captions and comments or is the lack of these just a teething problem? What about the fact that one could enter via facebook, does that make Smile less secure? I can only comment on what I have seen as I am not as computer savvy as you, Clay or several others in the group. Happy lace making, Joepie, East Sussex, UK -Original Message- From: Clay Blackwell Sent: Thursday, October 11, 2012 9:15 PM To: Arachne Subject: [lace] Webshots Smile Hello all - After several emails back and forth with Avital, we decided it would do no harm to put our Webshots pictures on Smile and see how it works. It only took a very few seconds for all of our pictures to appear. However, there are some serious shortcomings to this new program, and unless these things are changed in the near future, I'm afraid we will not be happy with it. 1. While it appears that all of our pictures transferred, there is no folder system. Furthermore, it appears that the pictures appear in the order of last in, first seen. And at this point, I don't think any of the pictures added in the past 24 hours (to Webshots) has automatically come over. (There is an option to this effect, I believe, but I may not have set it.) So without this organization, it is a bizarre mix of pictures with each person's pictures scattered around. It would be very hard to find anything in all of this. 2. None of our annotations about the photos came with them. No dates, descriptions, names, etc. I don't see any way of adding this information either! 3. The owner name and password remain the same. But one particular thing concerns me: it is easy to delete a picture, and virtually anyone who has access to the file could inadvertently hit the wrong button and wipe out the entire file. Likewise, there is no provision for settings to be secured so they can't be changed. So, go take a look, and if you see pictures of your own that you may not have on your computer, you may download them! I encourage anyone who has contributed to retrieve your photos so that in the future, if we find a better substitute for Webshots, we can upload them again. Sue and Avital Sue experienced difficulties getting onto the SMILE site, but I had just been on it, login on and off more than once. Is it possible that Sue's difficulties occurred because the SMILE system detected that arachne was already logged on, and would not allow a 2nd logon from another computer? If the answer is yes, then we will have to use very careful courtesy in using the site. As soon as an individual has looked at whatever they want to see, be sure to logoff, so as not to block another arachnean from accessing the photos. Re: [lace] webshots
I'm still willing to do this. I'm depending on lots of savvy people out there to look at this critically and determine whether it will work. Fortunately, we can have a free trial period to see how it does, but if we don't like it, we will probably lose all of those pictures (downloading does seem to be an option, but it would be time consuming.) Another issue to be taken into account is whether the account can be transferred at a later date... If, for some reason (senility comes to mind - and sometimes I think I'm there already!) I can no longer maintain it. Clay So if Clay follows through and opens a SMILE account for us, the whole arachne2003 set of photos would mean just one fee of $30? A once-a-year $30 fee is not so much a problem. I haven't read the terms of service but that sounds right. That's the usual agreement -- around $30 per year for this kind of service. Re: [lace] webshots
Thank you Clay for being wiling to do this. That is very generous of you In my opinion, SMILE sounds like a sensible thing to try out for the time being. By the time Clay reaches senility (if she ever does, and, whatever she says, she is one of the most capable people I know) I'm sure someone else will be prepared to take it on - or there will be some better/ different options out there anyway. As there's a free trial period, it sounds as if there's no loss in trying it out, and seeing if all our separate folders upload. If we need to move to a new site, it would probably be best if those of us who have uploaded photos, uploaded them to a new site, rather than going to the effort of downloading and moving them. I know some of mine have been up there for years, and don't need to be there any more, as far as I'm concerned. Avital Thanks for you input. You do understand these things better than most of us. Who initially created the webshots arachne2003 account? So if Clay follows through and opens a SMILE account for us, the whole arachne2003 set of photos would mean just one fee of $30? A once-a-year $30 fee is not so much a problem. If webshots is closing, I suggest that arachne photos be stored with flickr. I have both a flickr account and a google/picasa account. I think the flickr (yahoo) software is easier to use, and flickr is free to join. I will have to check out the details of how their software works, to see if it can be comparable to webshots. Anyone can start a group within flickr. The group can have private or public photos. The group creator/moderator can set it so any member can post photos, or require the moderator to review them first. Membership in a group can be moderated, which means somebody can make sure participants are arachne members. It would require members who wish to post photos to join flickr. But as I said, that is free. Several arachne members already have flickr accounts. If you have a yahoo account, you can use your yahoo password. You can specify whether you will allow people to download your photos or not. There is no advertising to pop up and annoy you. Within a group, I don't think it is possible for members to each have her or his own album. But there is the possibility of adding descriptions, where the lacemaker can state their name, pattern source, etc. Each arachne member would have to join flickr, and then join the arachne group. Here are some links so you can see it: 2 arachne members: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lorelei66eyecandy/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/25441481@N07/ This is the group run by the Finnish journalist: http://www.flickr.com/groups/bobbinlace/ http://www.flickr.com/groups/56846286@N00/ http://www.flickr.com/groups/turkish_armenian_and_greek_lac/ Lorelei - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. One drawback to moving to flickr: I don't think it would be possible to move the entire existing archive on webshots to flickr. Devon has pointed out to me that arachne could use laceioli on ning as its photo storage space. But I don't think it would be possible to move the entire archive of photos, as a block, to laceioli. And arachneans would have to join laceioli, individually, to post future photos (joining is free). There is archiving software in existence, although I haven't learned how to use it. If arachne can archive its text content, perhaps it is possible to archive the existing webshots data and just have the new photos somewhere else. Is there someone more knowledgeable about this than me, who could contact webshots and ask if it is possible to archive the existing arachne2003 webshots photos? The SMILE page says that any existing webshots members who join SMILE will have their photos transferred for them. This suggests that those who do not join will lose their photos, unless they transfer them individually to some other site. I have to back up a minute and be clearer about this. 1. There are several options for where to put future arachne photographs. That is easy. I recommend flickr (although laceioli on ning would welcome you all happily). 2. The problem is the existing collection of photos stored on webshots as arachne2003. If arachne stays with webshots/smile, they will automatically transfer the photos of everybody who signs up. This means that those who don't sign up will have their photos lost. So how important is it to keep the existing photos? I'd hate to lose them. Sorry to keep coming back at you. But I followed through and checked out smile's fees page. Only people who have paid their fee will be able to see any of the photos on their site. If you want to see others' photos and upload your own fee is $30/yr.If you only want to look at others' photos the fee is $15/yr. They are offering a 30 day free trial. This means that arachne members would not automatically have access to those photos. You have to join and pay their fee just to look. Achim is right. Any set or group of photos on flickr can be specified as private, or accessible only to members of the group. The same is true for ning (although I have urged all our members to make their photos public). Sue Yes it is possible. But I'm not sure how that would work. I suppose it would mean joining smile as arachne2003, with our existing password (I suppose another could be invented), and paying the $30 fee (so we could both view the existing batch of photos and continue uploading new ones). I'd like to know if smile will have any advertising on it. I have found the advertising on webshots to be a colossal pain. All the ads make each page very slow to load, and the screen is full of junk. And I hate their constant pop-ups. If they regard arachne2003 as a single entity, then staying with smile would be the simplest solution. Hi all Finally finished my Beds butterfly. I started it last May on a course with Christine Springett. It has 6 rolled tallies, she did the first one to show me how to do them, and then I struggled with the other five. Each time I came to THAT point, I put the pillow away, and did something easier on another pillow. Anyway, I bit the bullet and by the time I came to the last one it just worked. I am quite proud of it, even though it is not perfect, and I have uploaded a photo on Arachne as Sue Duckles told me to do. I also uploaded a photo of a 15cm diameter mat i did about 12 years ago, when I had my first bout of lace making. I went to a mixed needlecraft class, where there was one other person who wanted to learn bobbin lace. The class folded after 10 weeks, and I struggled on by myself, eventually abandoning lace altogether as work and family took up my time. When I took up the bobbins again about 2 years ago, I found I had to start from scratch again, and also that my fingers are a lot stiffer now. Anyway, if you want to have a look, go to the Arachen webshots album. Photos listed under my name. B.t.w. Sue, I hope you can sleep peacefully in the knowledge that do as I am told. [lace] Webshots, bobbin holders and identify lace type pls
I must have missed the details of Nelleke Glansdorp's lace for a historical costume - can someone enlighten me on what that type of lace is called? Sally, your bobbin case looks quite interesting and I am looking forward to seeing a photo (or 2) once you get your camera. Have you seen the one that I designed? You can see a photo of it on my website at http://www.brandis.com.au/craft/Lace/200504.html and there is also a PDF of instructions. The next time I make some I think I will use netting for the holding layer so that I can see if there is thread on the bobbins. There is a lady in Western Australia who makes a wonderful zipped case that holds about 35 pairs - they cost about $35AUD each last time I enquired but the lacemakers who have them would not give them up. I could try to find out the designers contact details if you are interested. I have seen another bobbin holder that holds 70 pairs - should do a diagram of as it is hard to describe. Don't know who designed it though. I have just uploaded on our webshot a rough sketch of the 4 types of bobbin holders I have seen - what other ones are there being used? The instructions for unsubscribing appear in each digest only because they are attached to each email, not because I like sprinkling them liberally in each digest. Reading Rhiannon's remarks on webshots reminded me that I put some pictures on there in about 2004 when I had just finished Miss Channer's Mat and was very proud of it. I did not want to add to it for quite a long time but when I eventually did, I just could not find my name on there. After a number of tries, I thought that perhaps with so many new users, if one did not use it then you would fall off the end and be deleted, so did not bother any more. Maybe someone can put me right on this. By the way, I have been doing a lot of 'chaotic' lace recently. One of the 'wilder' grounds. The first project is the Welwitschia mirabilis which is a plant that grows in the Namib desert. It actually has only two leaves but the wind caused the leaves to split and to end in tatters. Lace Express is expensive for a pattern magazine which might not have anything that interests you. like Tamara I subscribed for one year then dropped out. In Prague however there was a supplier from Spain, sorry I cannot remember their names, and they carried lots of back issues. They were at the NEC last December as well. Perhaps they also go to Lace events in Europe. I picked up about 3 single issues which all had several patterns which I liked. Much cheaper than a subscription and better than the web site as there you cannot see the patterns apart from the cover one. I liked particularly liked the horse too, and thought I'd seen it as being one I intend to do (if I live long enough to do everything intended) and suspected it is by my favourite designer, Michel Jourde, IHO he's a talented designer who's designs have real style and are totally different to all but a couple of other designers. So out with the Lace Express magazines (the hanging pair of bobbins and thread information top left on the pricking is the giveaway that that's where it came from) that I'd packed away - couldn't resist. It's pattern number 10 in the 2/2004 issue of Lace Express, and *is* by Michel Jourde. Thanks to Aleksei Karpenko for telling me that the pattern I couldn't place in the 4/2004 issue is pictured in the 3/2004 issue. When I looked at that one, it clearly states that the pattern will be in the next issue. It's an expensive magazine, available only on subsctription or through individual back issues, and, when I mentioned it a few days ago, several people have said that it's outside their budget. I'm having to take a year off from my subscription. But it's on high quality glossy paper with 30 plus patterns in each issue by good designers from around the world. If it was pubished as a book rather than a magazine, it would be considered inexpensive. Hi Rhiannon, (snip) . . . I would be very appreciative of any feedback.. http://community.webshots.com/scripts/editPhotos.fcgi?action=viewallalbumID= 276800987 Thank YOU Rhiannon Mann Clicked on and got up the blue part of the address, (complete with internal error and push back button messages); then typed in the '=' sign in the address slot; then copied-and pasted the number at the end; and finally got the pictures that way. Lots of lovely pieces ! Yes, I too liked the photo frame; and the Bucks Bookmark is pretty too. But my favourite has to be the Christmas mobile - such verve, and the fun of the festival ! (Somehow, it reminded me of a shopping bag full of what a child wants: falling snow for a white Christmas, and red sugar plums and glitter for treats. Linda Walton, (in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, U.K., where it's a clear and sunny dawning, but *freezing* cold, and there's snow in the forecast for next week.) - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello everyone - the webshots system is so easy and straightforward - I don't know why i didn't use it sooner. If you'd like to cast your eyes over some of the more basic projects compared to many of the other arachne albums then I would be very appreciative of any feedback.. http://community.webshots.com/scripts/editPhotos.fcgi?action=viewallalbumID= 276800987 Thank YOU Rhiannon Mann - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If anyone would like to see some photos of our Lace display the other weekend at the Baldock Festival please visit the album I have just created on the Arachne webshot album. See Lynne Cumming. http://community.webshots.com/user/arachne2003-date login : arachne2003 password: honiton Now I KNOW that lace was not made in those days and I did have a lucet to hand and demonstrated it's use to anyone who would listen. It was great fun and a change from our Victorian Fair which all the previous ones have been. It was a warm day - not at all suitable for velvet long sleeved dresses. Most of the lace was made by the demonstrators. A couple of pieces were antique lace which added to the variety on show. Enjoy, Lynne. I was very surprised (and pleased) to see that the Webshots album already has some photos in it! http://community.webshots.com/user/arachne2003 I hope someone will tell us about the pieces in VivDewar's album. Re: [lace] Webshots album
Dear Friends mea culpa! When I saw Avital's message I thought I'd have a go! I've started to scan all my lace with a view to creating a web-site or updating my pages in the Lace Fairy Gallery, but I've never tried to upload anything before! The pieces are Dabbling with Design - my first ever design that was based on one of the edgings in the Luton Lace Dealers Pattern book. I took the edging and made a mirror image of the head-side, then tinkered with it a bit to make a bookmark pattern. The version in the album was made in madeira 30 variegated with DMC perle 5 gimps. In a way the yarn is really a bit too thick for the design, but it does make a fairly firm bookmark that can be used without a plastic sleeve (makes it good for paper backed books). I've also made it in madeira 40 with embroidery floss for the gimps - that was the version I exchanged in the bookmark exchange - I don't have a picture of that, but you can see it on the Lace Fairy site. T is for Tim A square to fit in one of the plastic coasters available for lace etc. I made it for my husband when we had our bedroom fitted out with new wardrobes. Decorations are lilac, blue turquoise. I based the shape of the T on a clipart image and added the mayflowers because I like them, I can make them they seemed to fit! The Swan The third is Tamara's Swan that I made in silver white for my brother's silver wedding. Arachne members helped with advice on how to mount it. I can honestly say it's the piece of lace I've learned the most from making (including those unhappy tasks - undoing and give up start again!). I'm looking forward to making her waterlillies when I can find the time. Tamara - thanks again for the pattern Viv From: Avital Pinnick Subject: [lace] Webshots album I was very surprised (and pleased) to see that the Webshots album already has some photos in it! http://community.webshots.com/user/arachne2003 I hope someone will tell us about the pieces in VivDewar's album.
